storytelling and what makes a good story storytelling and what makes a good story and why it's so important especially in and why it's so important especially in and why it's so important especially in the Christian Ministry uh that it really the Christian Ministry uh that it really the Christian Ministry uh that it really just sort of became a thing on its own just sort of became a thing on its own just sort of became a thing on its own and we create a position and here I am and we create a position and here I am and we create a position and here I am here you are okay all right let's let's here you are okay all right let's let's here you are okay all right let's let's dive into this one because I think and dive into this one because I think and dive into this one because I think and this again I have talks with with this again I have talks with with this again I have talks with with churches all the time and I'm always churches all the time and I'm always churches all the time and I'm always telling them stories stories stories telling them stories stories stories telling them stories stories stories stories of what God is doing in the stories of what God is doing in the stories of what God is doing in the people in your church and you should people in your church and you should people in your church and you should have an abundant amount of stories have an abundant amount of stories have an abundant amount of stories because if if you're an active growing because if if you're an active growing because if if you're an active growing church and God's in it lives are being church and God's in it lives are being church and God's in it lives are being changed right so that's just a natural changed right so that's just a natural changed right so that's just a natural conversations like yeah yeah we agree conversations like yeah yeah we agree conversations like yeah yeah we agree Jason and they're going how do we Jason and they're going how do we Jason and they're going how do we capture these stories you know so yeah capture these stories you know so yeah capture these stories you know so yeah I'd love to hear from you teach us how I'd love to hear from you teach us how I'd love to hear from you teach us how you are doing your job uh and then we'll you are doing your job uh and then we'll you are doing your job uh and then we'll pivot to actually you know the outcome pivot to actually you know the outcome pivot to actually you know the outcome and what you do with those stories but and what you do with those stories but and what you do with those stories but just tell us how how do you what's the just tell us how how do you what's the just tell us how how do you what's the formula yeah well so you understand formula yeah well so you understand formula yeah well so you understand there really is no formula uh that's the there really is no formula uh that's the there really is no formula uh that's the that's the secret it really is probably that's the secret it really is probably that's the secret it really is probably the most difficult thing I think in the most difficult thing I think in the most difficult thing I think in Ministry Ministry Ministry um as a business how do you measure um as a business how do you measure um as a business how do you measure return on investment in telling a story return on investment in telling a story return on investment in telling a story how can I prove that I'm changing hearts how can I prove that I'm changing hearts how can I prove that I'm changing hearts and minds or leading someone closer to and minds or leading someone closer to and minds or leading someone closer to Christ uh by telling a story and uh Christ uh by telling a story and uh Christ uh by telling a story and uh that's been I think the biggest hurdle that's been I think the biggest hurdle that's been I think the biggest hurdle for us to overcome for us to overcome for us to overcome um but the way I do it is I try to take um but the way I do it is I try to take um but the way I do it is I try to take traditional stories that we would

right so I told my story now what and um right so I told my story now what and um it's really been more of a slow play for it's really been more of a slow play for it's really been more of a slow play for me to go me to go me to go intentionally around to pastors have a intentionally around to pastors have a intentionally around to pastors have a seat and we talk a little bit you know seat and we talk a little bit you know seat and we talk a little bit you know about the fact that you know people are about the fact that you know people are about the fact that you know people are broken and we're kind of Misfits and and broken and we're kind of Misfits and and broken and we're kind of Misfits and and we don't always belong and there's so we don't always belong and there's so we don't always belong and there's so much hesitation there to share that much hesitation there to share that much hesitation there to share that story that I really need that support story that I really need that support story that I really need that support from you and the Ministries that you're from you and the Ministries that you're from you and the Ministries that you're involved in to help remind people that involved in to help remind people that involved in to help remind people that you know what you're going through right you know what you're going through right you know what you're going through right now will help so many people who are now will help so many people who are now will help so many people who are struggling with the same thing but maybe struggling with the same thing but maybe struggling with the same thing but maybe they have shame or guilt about what they have shame or guilt about what they have shame or guilt about what they're going through and aren't really they're going through and aren't really they're going through and aren't really willing to share yet willing to share yet willing to share yet and that's just enough of a needle that and that's just enough of a needle that and that's just enough of a needle that support through Ministry uh that I can support through Ministry uh that I can support through Ministry uh that I can usually get enough contacts with people usually get enough contacts with people usually get enough contacts with people and we can go from there yeah but it and we can go from there yeah but it and we can go from there yeah but it does have to be intentional it has to be does have to be intentional it has to be does have to be intentional it has to be consistent on a really regular basis I'm consistent on a really regular basis I'm consistent on a really regular basis I'm sitting down with those pastors and sitting down with those pastors and sitting down with those pastors and having that discussion that's key having that discussion that's key having that discussion that's key it's consistent it's not like well once it's consistent it's not like well once it's consistent it's not like well once a year I asked him for her story no it's a year I asked him for her story no it's a year I asked him for her story no it's relation you're building a relationship relation you're building a relationship relation you're building a relationship with the Ministries so you have with the Ministries so you have with the Ministries so you have consistency on Gathering those those consistency on Gathering those those consistency on Gathering those those what we call maybe a lead yes and you what we call maybe a lead yes and you what we call maybe a lead yes and you can do something with it yeah that's can do something with it yeah that's can do something with it yeah that's right right right yeah I think you know I'm going to make yeah I think you know I'm going to make yeah I think you know I'm going to make a generalization here but I think by and a generalization here but I think by and a generalization here but I think by and large most people in most churches they large most people in most churches they large most people in most churches they come in knowing what their own come in knowing what their own come in knowing what their own Brokenness is what their own hurts and Brokenness is what their own hurts and Brokenness is what their own hurts and their Hang-Ups and their challenges are their Hang-Ups and their challenges are their Hang-Ups and their challenges are and they sit in a seat on a Sunday and they sit in a seat on a Sunday and they sit in a seat on a Sunday morning and they sing the songs with the morning and they sing the songs with the morning and they sing the songs with the other people and they listen to the

mind right now the music is crescendoing mind right now the music is crescendoing up and we've got this up and we've got this up and we've got this you know this great amazing and it is you know this great amazing and it is you know this great amazing and it is for that moment in time is an for that moment in time is an for that moment in time is an unbelievable amazing Testament uh to the unbelievable amazing Testament uh to the unbelievable amazing Testament uh to the power of Christ power of Christ power of Christ I am thinking okay and then now what I am thinking okay and then now what I am thinking okay and then now what because that's not life doesn't work because that's not life doesn't work because that's not life doesn't work that way nor should it nor did God ever that way nor should it nor did God ever that way nor should it nor did God ever promise us to have this clean wrapped up promise us to have this clean wrapped up promise us to have this clean wrapped up testimonial life and then no problems testimonial life and then no problems testimonial life and then no problems follow and so I purposely try to follow follow and so I purposely try to follow follow and so I purposely try to follow up with people that have done stories up with people that have done stories up with people that have done stories especially powerful ones like that six especially powerful ones like that six especially powerful ones like that six months to a year later and just make months to a year later and just make months to a year later and just make sure sure sure just just ask how's your life going just just ask how's your life going just just ask how's your life going what's happening to you and here's an what's happening to you and here's an what's happening to you and here's an example example example um a woman I'd done a similar story for um a woman I'd done a similar story for um a woman I'd done a similar story for a year later was diagnosed with cancer a year later was diagnosed with cancer a year later was diagnosed with cancer and so was now struggling through that and so was now struggling through that and so was now struggling through that Journey with you know her children and Journey with you know her children and Journey with you know her children and so on in a completely new story so on in a completely new story so on in a completely new story and heard new recognition of how she and heard new recognition of how she and heard new recognition of how she needed to actually pour in even more needed to actually pour in even more needed to actually pour in even more than she had poured in before into her than she had poured in before into her than she had poured in before into her faith so the stories just continue faith so the stories just continue faith so the stories just continue that's our life yeah that's our life yeah that's our life yeah wow wow wow that's that's amazing I I bet we that's that's amazing I I bet we that's that's amazing I I bet we probably don't do that we probably just probably don't do that we probably just probably don't do that we probably just move on to the next thing we need to get move on to the next thing we need to get move on to the next thing we need to get to going back to the people that were to going back to the people that were to going back to the people that were open to share their story God's not done open to share their story God's not done open to share their story God's not done no God has never done and I would say no God has never done and I would say no God has never done and I would say that I think the typical response from that I think the typical response from that I think the typical response from pastoral staff and there's nothing wrong pastoral staff and there's nothing wrong pastoral staff and there's nothing wrong with this because they're thinking of it with this because they're thinking of it with this because they're thinking of it in terms of

in terms of in terms of well haven't we already told that story well haven't we already told that story well haven't we already told that story or you know or people were in this or you know or people were in this or you know or people were in this service a year ago for example and they service a year ago for example and they service a year ago for example and they already saw this story already saw this story already saw this story what would be new what would be new what would be new because that again that's the Paradigm I because that again that's the Paradigm I because that again that's the Paradigm I don't understand we've baptized somebody don't understand we've baptized somebody don't understand we've baptized somebody oh right we had loud awesome beautiful oh right we had loud awesome beautiful oh right we had loud awesome beautiful music in church we baptized him isn't music in church we baptized him isn't music in church we baptized him isn't that the end that the end that the end I was like no of course not that's never I was like no of course not that's never I was like no of course not that's never the end that's just sort of the the end that's just sort of the the end that's just sort of the beginning now with the fun stuff happens beginning now with the fun stuff happens beginning now with the fun stuff happens yeah the start yeah the start yeah the start that's such a good conversation okay that's such a good conversation okay that's such a good conversation okay give me some um just some some ways that give me some um just some some ways that give me some um just some some ways that you what would you do to encourage you what would you do to encourage you what would you do to encourage people that are hearing you right now people that are hearing you right now people that are hearing you right now that go yeah we just don't do a very that go yeah we just don't do a very that go yeah we just don't do a very good job or do I start good job or do I start good job or do I start well you need to know your church first well you need to know your church first well you need to know your church first of all the church body and what they're of all the church body and what they're of all the church body and what they're going to be accepting of going to be accepting of going to be accepting of um you know I was fortunate to you know um you know I was fortunate to you know um you know I was fortunate to you know when I lived in the midwest uh we when I lived in the midwest uh we when I lived in the midwest uh we attended my wife and I and our then new attended my wife and I and our then new attended my wife and I and our then new children uh attended a children uh attended a children uh attended a non-denominational that had a lot of non-denominational that had a lot of non-denominational that had a lot of Baptists underpinnings so there was a Baptists underpinnings so there was a Baptists underpinnings so there was a lot of Storytelling and a lot of people lot of Storytelling and a lot of people lot of Storytelling and a lot of people standing up and sharing testimonials standing up and sharing testimonials standing up and sharing testimonials just the testimonial of the day you know just the testimonial of the day you know just the testimonial of the day you know that kind of thing yeah so I got to see that kind of thing yeah so I got to see that kind of thing yeah so I got to see a lot of and you could it's the movement a lot of and you could it's the movement a lot of and you could it's the movement in the in the audience is palpable when in the in the audience is palpable when in the in the audience is palpable when that happens when especially when people that happens when especially when people that happens when especially when people are sharing openly well and Texas is are sharing openly well and Texas is are sharing openly well and Texas is just different I mean the way we have to just different I mean the way we have to just different I mean the way we have to be a little bit more creative about how be a little bit more creative about how be a little bit more creative about how we get through to people uh so my advice

we get through to people uh so my advice we get through to people uh so my advice is to know your church and then is to know your church and then is to know your church and then formulate a plan for how you get buy-in formulate a plan for how you get buy-in formulate a plan for how you get buy-in with your pastoral staff and that that with your pastoral staff and that that with your pastoral staff and that that buy-in I believe really needs to be buy-in I believe really needs to be buy-in I believe really needs to be public it can't just be Rob yeah tell public it can't just be Rob yeah tell public it can't just be Rob yeah tell stories stories stories because I got that at the beginning oh because I got that at the beginning oh because I got that at the beginning oh so you're going to have a Blog so you're going to have a Blog so you're going to have a Blog might well I mean sort of maybe that's might well I mean sort of maybe that's might well I mean sort of maybe that's part of it and that is part of a tiny part of it and that is part of a tiny part of it and that is part of a tiny part of it part of it part of it um but more um but more um but more um I need from you you know anytime we um I need from you you know anytime we um I need from you you know anytime we can and this goes back to micro nudging can and this goes back to micro nudging can and this goes back to micro nudging remind people it's so important to tell remind people it's so important to tell remind people it's so important to tell your story share what's happening in your story share what's happening in your story share what's happening in this room today with your neighbor it this room today with your neighbor it this room today with your neighbor it does not have to be on film it doesn't does not have to be on film it doesn't does not have to be on film it doesn't have to be you don't have to stand up in have to be you don't have to stand up in have to be you don't have to stand up in sermon or whatever you just need to Pat sermon or whatever you just need to Pat sermon or whatever you just need to Pat somebody in the back and say this is somebody in the back and say this is somebody in the back and say this is this thing I'm going through this thing I'm going through this thing I'm going through can I share with you yeah and that's it can I share with you yeah and that's it can I share with you yeah and that's it but that comes from the staff I really but that comes from the staff I really but that comes from the staff I really believe yeah believe yeah believe yeah yeah and I think that yeah and I think that yeah and I think that using those stories not only to using those stories not only to using those stories not only to encourage the congregation but almost encourage the congregation but almost encourage the congregation but almost probably more importantly encourage probably more importantly encourage probably more importantly encourage people who are not yet a part of your people who are not yet a part of your people who are not yet a part of your church or the body oh absolutely they church or the body oh absolutely they church or the body oh absolutely they can see there is some hope through that can see there is some hope through that can see there is some hope through that that's why I'm always encouraging that's why I'm always encouraging that's why I'm always encouraging churches hey those stories what you do churches hey those stories what you do churches hey those stories what you do with them you know yeah not only put with them you know yeah not only put with them you know yeah not only put them on social media put them on your them on social media put them on your them on social media put them on your website where it's relevant and make website where it's relevant and make website where it's relevant and make sense because that's what people are are sense because that's what people are are sense because that's what people are are they're checking you out put them in they're checking you out put them in they're checking you out put them in your Google business profile upload that your Google business profile upload that your Google business profile upload that video make it shorter you know but video make it shorter you know but video make it shorter you know but upload that video and just because upload that video and just because upload that video and just because people that are investigating checking

people that are investigating checking people that are investigating checking out your church can see and watch those out your church can see and watch those out your church can see and watch those stories and be hopefully be moved to uh stories and be hopefully be moved to uh stories and be hopefully be moved to uh you know to action call to action yeah you know to action call to action yeah you know to action call to action yeah that's right that's right that's right yeah hey Rob who are you looking to yeah hey Rob who are you looking to yeah hey Rob who are you looking to listening to reading studying up from listening to reading studying up from listening to reading studying up from that's helping you develop your skills that's helping you develop your skills that's helping you develop your skills to Be an Effective Storyteller are there to Be an Effective Storyteller are there to Be an Effective Storyteller are there certain resources that you've leaned certain resources that you've leaned certain resources that you've leaned into or leaning into these days into or leaning into these days into or leaning into these days um I read a lot so that's I think that's um I read a lot so that's I think that's um I read a lot so that's I think that's this is like you know how do I become a this is like you know how do I become a this is like you know how do I become a good writer well you have to read a ton good writer well you have to read a ton good writer well you have to read a ton um before you ever become a good writer um before you ever become a good writer um before you ever become a good writer and I think before you can become a good and I think before you can become a good and I think before you can become a good Storyteller you need to know what makes Storyteller you need to know what makes Storyteller you need to know what makes a good story and that's this is kind of a good story and that's this is kind of a good story and that's this is kind of where as a church sometimes they say where as a church sometimes they say where as a church sometimes they say don't ever work at a church you know don't ever work at a church you know don't ever work at a church you know because then you'll see what's behind because then you'll see what's behind because then you'll see what's behind the curtain you know and you know and the curtain you know and you know and the curtain you know and you know and sometimes you know you understand the sometimes you know you understand the sometimes you know you understand the stagecraft and things and it sort of stagecraft and things and it sort of stagecraft and things and it sort of feels like yeah feels like yeah feels like yeah um so nobody likes it nobody likes to um so nobody likes it nobody likes to um so nobody likes it nobody likes to eat the sausage when they know how it's eat the sausage when they know how it's eat the sausage when they know how it's made right yeah kind of I mean it feels made right yeah kind of I mean it feels made right yeah kind of I mean it feels so much like I grew up my mother was uh so much like I grew up my mother was uh so much like I grew up my mother was uh in theater and so I grew up as a child in theater and so I grew up as a child in theater and so I grew up as a child uh sleeping in the you know this stands uh sleeping in the you know this stands uh sleeping in the you know this stands or the audience whatever in the or the audience whatever in the or the audience whatever in the auditorium when they would have auditorium when they would have auditorium when they would have rehearsals at night and I remember rehearsals at night and I remember rehearsals at night and I remember thinking it was such so anticlimactic to thinking it was such so anticlimactic to thinking it was such so anticlimactic to go to see the opening on Saturday night go to see the opening on Saturday night go to see the opening on Saturday night or whatever if whatever play they were or whatever if whatever play they were or whatever if whatever play they were doing because I've seen this 325 000 doing because I've seen this 325 000 doing because I've seen this 325 000 times this is actually not exciting at times this is actually not exciting at times this is actually not exciting at all yeah so but I try to
