i am from georgia born ray still lived i am from georgia born ray still lived there there there still live in the same city just still live in the same city just still live in the same city just northeast of atlanta i'm very grateful northeast of atlanta i'm very grateful northeast of atlanta i'm very grateful for for for the community that god has placed me in the community that god has placed me in the community that god has placed me in and love it and love it and love it here in georgia and so here in georgia and so here in georgia and so typically i grew up in a church typically i grew up in a church typically i grew up in a church family christian family home very family christian family home very family christian family home very grateful for the grateful for the grateful for the heritage that god has blessed me with heritage that god has blessed me with heritage that god has blessed me with and and and what my family taught me was to love what my family taught me was to love what my family taught me was to love god but to love the church and god but to love the church and god but to love the church and with that came a love to serve in the with that came a love to serve in the with that came a love to serve in the church church church of a love to serve people and how to use of a love to serve people and how to use of a love to serve people and how to use your talents and gifts for the church your talents and gifts for the church your talents and gifts for the church and so i saw my parents do that and so i saw my parents do that and so i saw my parents do that week in and week out still doing that week in and week out still doing that week in and week out still doing that today and in different ministries today and in different ministries today and in different ministries the biggest one was worship ministry the biggest one was worship ministry the biggest one was worship ministry union seeing union seeing union seeing you know generations of my family using you know generations of my family using you know generations of my family using their gifts and talents and so from a their gifts and talents and so from a their gifts and talents and so from a young age you know young age you know young age you know knowing that and having to you know be knowing that and having to you know be knowing that and having to you know be at church when the doors were open at church when the doors were open at church when the doors were open and every week and you know until you and every week and you know until you and every week and you know until you know know know every time that church was going on we every time that church was going on we every time that church was going on we were there in any type of event were there in any type of event were there in any type of event in the community we were there and so in the community we were there and so in the community we were there and so with that with that with that i was saved at the age of seven and not i was saved at the age of seven and not i was saved at the age of seven and not long long long after it was not just sitting on a pew after it was not just sitting on a pew after it was not just sitting on a pew but it was how can i be a part of the but it was how can i be a part of the but it was how can i be a part of the church and how can i use my gifts and church and how can i use my gifts and church and how can i use my gifts and talents what are my gifts and talents talents what are my gifts and talents talents what are my gifts and talents for the church and so uh very early on i for the church and so uh very early on i for the church and so uh very early on i saw saw saw god knitting different things in my life

god knitting different things in my life god knitting different things in my life outside of church outside of church outside of church that he would soon turn into me using in that he would soon turn into me using in that he would soon turn into me using in the church and so the church and so the church and so i first got started in graphic design by i first got started in graphic design by i first got started in graphic design by accident accident accident that's how i tell the story um i was in that's how i tell the story um i was in that's how i tell the story um i was in eighth grade and i needed something to eighth grade and i needed something to eighth grade and i needed something to do in a class and a teacher do in a class and a teacher do in a class and a teacher rummaged through his closet found an rummaged through his closet found an rummaged through his closet found an adobe photoshop adobe photoshop adobe photoshop book literally threw it at me i book literally threw it at me i book literally threw it at me i caught it and i tell the story that i caught it and i tell the story that i caught it and i tell the story that i never put it down never put it down never put it down i spent an hour five days a week reading i spent an hour five days a week reading i spent an hour five days a week reading that book cover to cover that book cover to cover that book cover to cover and sitting on a computer and then and sitting on a computer and then and sitting on a computer and then i got into high school and there was a i got into high school and there was a i got into high school and there was a banner printer that wasn't being used banner printer that wasn't being used banner printer that wasn't being used then he's invited to do it would you be then he's invited to do it would you be then he's invited to do it would you be willing to learn how to do it and get willing to learn how to do it and get willing to learn how to do it and get into print design into print design into print design absolutely why not and so there were absolutely why not and so there were absolutely why not and so there were class class class marketing classes i was being put in marketing classes i was being put in marketing classes i was being put in because of scheduling conflicts because of scheduling conflicts because of scheduling conflicts and then when the opportunity arose in and then when the opportunity arose in and then when the opportunity arose in high school that i had to have high school that i had to have high school that i had to have some type of internship i just felt a some type of internship i just felt a some type of internship i just felt a very strong calling on my life that it very strong calling on my life that it very strong calling on my life that it had to be had to be had to be marketing and media graphic design in a marketing and media graphic design in a marketing and media graphic design in a church church church and i fought that because i said let me and i fought that because i said let me and i fought that because i said let me get this out of my system get this out of my system get this out of my system so i can pursue the medical career that so i can pursue the medical career that so i can pursue the medical career that i want i want i want and uh god had other plans and uh god had other plans and uh god had other plans and he carried that on and he placed me and he carried that on and he placed me and he carried that on and he placed me in a local church in a local church in a local church where i became the graphic designer at a where i became the graphic designer at a where i became the graphic designer at a as as as a 16 year old and became the graphic a 16 year old and became the graphic a 16 year old and became the graphic designer designer designer overnight and i look back on some of overnight and i look back on some of overnight and i look back on some of those designs because i

those designs because i those designs because i i still have them all and i should have i still have them all and i should have i still have them all and i should have been fired a long time ago been fired a long time ago been fired a long time ago i tell them because of how bad some of i tell them because of how bad some of i tell them because of how bad some of them are them are them are and there were some there were some good and there were some there were some good and there were some there were some good ones but there are definitely some that ones but there are definitely some that ones but there are definitely some that i wish i could i wish i could i wish i could erase from on the online platforms that erase from on the online platforms that erase from on the online platforms that still exist still exist still exist um but i carried that on and really um but i carried that on and really um but i carried that on and really committed to committed to committed to that's what i need to do in college and that's what i need to do in college and that's what i need to do in college and just started building just started building just started building more skills and everything and so what more skills and everything and so what more skills and everything and so what drew me to drew me to drew me to into the church marketing world was into the church marketing world was into the church marketing world was really a calling really a calling really a calling uh and i had fought that uh and i had fought that uh and i had fought that uh calling before but it was just uh calling before but it was just uh calling before but it was just finally the surrender finally the surrender finally the surrender and seeing how god really knitted every and seeing how god really knitted every and seeing how god really knitted every opportunity and opportunity and opportunity and people seeing potential in me mentors people seeing potential in me mentors people seeing potential in me mentors that i've had and teachers that i've had and teachers that i've had and teachers before i even saw it in myself and just before i even saw it in myself and just before i even saw it in myself and just applying that into the church world applying that into the church world applying that into the church world to use my gifts and talents to use my gifts and talents to use my gifts and talents to build the kingdom and it's something to build the kingdom and it's something to build the kingdom and it's something when i'm reminded of that it's like i when i'm reminded of that it's like i when i'm reminded of that it's like i get to do this get to do this get to do this this is what i get to do and so i i love this is what i get to do and so i i love this is what i get to do and so i i love what i get to do and love getting to what i get to do and love getting to what i get to do and love getting to help my local church where i continue to help my local church where i continue to help my local church where i continue to serve serve serve heading up marketing communications but heading up marketing communications but heading up marketing communications but also getting to help other churches and also getting to help other churches and also getting to help other churches and other church leaders any way i can other church leaders any way i can other church leaders any way i can yeah yeah i'm oh i'm excited to talk to yeah yeah i'm oh i'm excited to talk to yeah yeah i'm oh i'm excited to talk to you about that but you about that but you about that but your story rings true with so many of us your story rings true with so many of us your story rings true with so many of us and and and uh i'm the same way i i never thought i uh i'm the same way i i never thought i uh i'm the same way i i never thought i worked for a church but god's got a huge worked for a church but god's got a huge worked for a church but god's got a huge sense of humor and sense of humor and sense of humor and next thing i know i you know i spent next thing i know i you know i spent next thing i know i you know i spent over a decade serving my church in the

over a decade serving my church in the over a decade serving my church in the same kind of capacity and so same kind of capacity and so same kind of capacity and so we all have those very similar stories we all have those very similar stories we all have those very similar stories and and and it's really cool how god just taps into it's really cool how god just taps into it's really cool how god just taps into he gives us these he gives us these he gives us these these strengths and weaknesses and these strengths and weaknesses and these strengths and weaknesses and talents and and gifts and then he says talents and and gifts and then he says talents and and gifts and then he says hey hey hey i want you to use them to serve me in i want you to use them to serve me in i want you to use them to serve me in our in our our in our our in our my church and so i think that's really my church and so i think that's really my church and so i think that's really really cool well you wrote a book really cool well you wrote a book really cool well you wrote a book recently and i can see it on your screen recently and i can see it on your screen recently and i can see it on your screen there behind you there behind you there behind you uh so you wrote a book called making uh so you wrote a book called making uh so you wrote a book called making church church church marketing simple which causes me to marketing simple which causes me to marketing simple which causes me to think that think that think that maybe churches haven't made it simple maybe churches haven't made it simple maybe churches haven't made it simple and so you have i think it is and so you have i think it is and so you have i think it is six tips or seven again to remind me uh six tips or seven again to remind me uh six tips or seven again to remind me uh the tips have you talked about it the tips have you talked about it the tips have you talked about it so why okay first of all why did you so why okay first of all why did you so why okay first of all why did you write the book write the book write the book and then what are you seeing that's and then what are you seeing that's and then what are you seeing that's churches are doing wrong that's not churches are doing wrong that's not churches are doing wrong that's not making it simple for making it simple for making it simple for churches to do marketing yeah so good churches to do marketing yeah so good churches to do marketing yeah so good question question question why did i write a book i i asked myself why did i write a book i i asked myself why did i write a book i i asked myself that almost every day through the that almost every day through the that almost every day through the writing process of everything writing process of everything writing process of everything um it actually came i actually um it actually came i actually um it actually came i actually was praying through next steps of at the was praying through next steps of at the was praying through next steps of at the end of 2019 i was about to enter my last end of 2019 i was about to enter my last end of 2019 i was about to enter my last semester semester semester graduate school and um this is before graduate school and um this is before graduate school and um this is before the pandemic so the pandemic so the pandemic so we're entering so this is not even the we're entering so this is not even the we're entering so this is not even the thought of at this point thought of at this point thought of at this point and my pastor was doing a sermon series and my pastor was doing a sermon series and my pastor was doing a sermon series called no way called no way called no way and to pray for god to do no and to pray for god to do no and to pray for god to do no way things in your life in 2020

way things in your life in 2020 way things in your life in 2020 and trust me i have joked with him and and trust me i have joked with him and and trust me i have joked with him and said how dare you make us pray that said how dare you make us pray that said how dare you make us pray that prayer prayer prayer because it i we have a pandemic and we because it i we have a pandemic and we because it i we have a pandemic and we were saying no way were saying no way were saying no way every day in 2020 but in that every day in 2020 but in that every day in 2020 but in that i just was praying you know god what is i just was praying you know god what is i just was praying you know god what is it you would have me to do or it you would have me to do or it you would have me to do or you do through me that i'm gonna say you do through me that i'm gonna say you do through me that i'm gonna say no way and for some reason no way and for some reason no way and for some reason it's weird thinking of it may sound god it's weird thinking of it may sound god it's weird thinking of it may sound god i just felt the strong sense to write a i just felt the strong sense to write a i just felt the strong sense to write a book book book and on church marketing and i've always and on church marketing and i've always and on church marketing and i've always loved reading loved reading loved reading i've always loved writing but me writing i've always loved writing but me writing i've always loved writing but me writing a book a book a book and writing a book on church marketing i and writing a book on church marketing i and writing a book on church marketing i didn't feel qualified at all to do it didn't feel qualified at all to do it didn't feel qualified at all to do it and so i was seeking advice for it and so i was seeking advice for it and so i was seeking advice for it because because because that's a big task to say you're going to that's a big task to say you're going to that's a big task to say you're going to write a book write a book write a book and so i went to my brother and i didn't and so i went to my brother and i didn't and so i went to my brother and i didn't tell him anything he's tell him anything he's tell him anything he's one of the most scholarly people i know one of the most scholarly people i know one of the most scholarly people i know and who i go to a lot for advice and and who i go to a lot for advice and and who i go to a lot for advice and so i went to him i said i'm just praying so i went to him i said i'm just praying so i went to him i said i'm just praying through some through some through some some next steps you know just you know some next steps you know just you know some next steps you know just you know i'm giving some advice like what do you i'm giving some advice like what do you i'm giving some advice like what do you think so well let me go pray about it think so well let me go pray about it think so well let me go pray about it and and and you know i'll i'll get back to you and you know i'll i'll get back to you and you know i'll i'll get back to you and so he comes to me so he comes to me so he comes to me and he says i think you should write a and he says i think you should write a and he says i think you should write a book i said well i guess i'm done fighting i said well i guess i'm done fighting that one with god that one with god that one with god at that point so um i started the at that point so um i started the at that point so um i started the process of writing the book process of writing the book process of writing the book in february 2020 i finished my first

in february 2020 i finished my first in february 2020 i finished my first rough draft rough draft rough draft two days before my church shut down for two days before my church shut down for two days before my church shut down for the pandemic the pandemic the pandemic and so at that point i started really and so at that point i started really and so at that point i started really questioning questioning questioning what in the world you have made me write what in the world you have made me write what in the world you have made me write a church marketing book and everything a church marketing book and everything a church marketing book and everything has been turned has been turned has been turned on its side right now in our world in on its side right now in our world in on its side right now in our world in the church world the church world the church world does this book even have relevance does this book even have relevance does this book even have relevance anymore anymore anymore so the second rough draft went into so the second rough draft went into so the second rough draft went into adding some pandemic adding some pandemic adding some pandemic related situations and to related situations and to related situations and to make it more timeless because church make it more timeless because church make it more timeless because church isn't the same right now isn't the same right now isn't the same right now and but i finished and i launched the and but i finished and i launched the and but i finished and i launched the book in november of 2020 book in november of 2020 book in november of 2020 but the reason i you know it's called but the reason i you know it's called but the reason i you know it's called making church marketing simple making church marketing simple making church marketing simple is because what i went into it how i is because what i went into it how i is because what i went into it how i enter the church marketing world enter the church marketing world enter the church marketing world and how i've seen so many other churches and how i've seen so many other churches and how i've seen so many other churches try to attempt it and make it try to attempt it and make it try to attempt it and make it complicated complicated complicated uh on one hand ministry is very messy uh on one hand ministry is very messy uh on one hand ministry is very messy it's very difficult marketing is very it's very difficult marketing is very it's very difficult marketing is very messy and difficult messy and difficult messy and difficult you put those two together and it's a you put those two together and it's a you put those two together and it's a combination of disaster that can happen combination of disaster that can happen combination of disaster that can happen and i remember sitting you know as an and i remember sitting you know as an and i remember sitting you know as an intern in over my head intern in over my head intern in over my head overwhelmed trying to complicate things overwhelmed trying to complicate things overwhelmed trying to complicate things and if i knew ready to quit honestly i and if i knew ready to quit honestly i and if i knew ready to quit honestly i was just so overwhelmed was just so overwhelmed was just so overwhelmed and i finally said if i'm gonna do this and i finally said if i'm gonna do this and i finally said if i'm gonna do this then i'm going to have to first pray get

then i'm going to have to first pray get then i'm going to have to first pray get in a posture of prayer in a posture of prayer in a posture of prayer but i'm also going to have to make this but i'm also going to have to make this but i'm also going to have to make this simple because this is church this is simple because this is church this is simple because this is church this is something something something that i've been a part of my entire life that i've been a part of my entire life that i've been a part of my entire life why am i trying to turn it into why am i trying to turn it into why am i trying to turn it into something else at this point something else at this point something else at this point and so what i did was you go back to the and so what i did was you go back to the and so what i did was you go back to the basics if you're feeling overwhelmed basics if you're feeling overwhelmed basics if you're feeling overwhelmed that what has helped me is always go that what has helped me is always go that what has helped me is always go back to the basis and that's in anything back to the basis and that's in anything back to the basis and that's in anything personally professionally and even personally professionally and even personally professionally and even spiritually go back to the basics spiritually go back to the basics spiritually go back to the basics go back to your foundation and one of go back to your foundation and one of go back to your foundation and one of the things that i went back to was the things that i went back to was the things that i went back to was even because i got my start in graphic even because i got my start in graphic even because i got my start in graphic design before i even design before i even design before i even got into marketing and communications of got into marketing and communications of got into marketing and communications of it it it i went back to how i would kind of do a i went back to how i would kind of do a i went back to how i would kind of do a questionnaire for people questionnaire for people questionnaire for people people were requesting so many graphics people were requesting so many graphics people were requesting so many graphics to be done in every ministry that was to be done in every ministry that was to be done in every ministry that was overwhelming and so how did i get all overwhelming and so how did i get all overwhelming and so how did i get all the information the information the information because coming and telling me you needed because coming and telling me you needed because coming and telling me you needed a a a and a promotional package for an egg and a promotional package for an egg and a promotional package for an egg hunt hunt hunt didn't tell me where it was when it was didn't tell me where it was when it was didn't tell me where it was when it was who is it for who is it for who is it for what was included but if i ask the what was included but if i ask the what was included but if i ask the questions questions questions the simple questions what we learned in the simple questions what we learned in the simple questions what we learned in elementary school elementary school elementary school the who what when where how and why the who what when where how and why the who what when where how and why that gave me all the information i that gave me all the information i that gave me all the information i needed so that's where needed so that's where needed so that's where making church marketing simple the six making church marketing simple the six making church marketing simple the six questions every church leader needs to questions every church leader needs to questions every church leader needs to answer answer answer came from and that's what i go through came from and that's what i go through came from and that's what i go through but that's kind of the framework but that's kind of the framework but that's kind of the framework is answering those six basic is answering those six basic is answering those six basic questions about your church and that's
