and so even if it's a good idea in my and so even if it's a good idea in my head if I tell the person that idea and head if I tell the person that idea and head if I tell the person that idea and then interested in words and um art and so I interested in words and um art and so I thought I wanted to be a programmer at thought I wanted to be a programmer at thought I wanted to be a programmer at one point and then because my dad is a one point and then because my dad is a one point and then because my dad is a programmer and then I was like well I programmer and then I was like well I programmer and then I was like well I want to do graphic design so I went to want to do graphic design so I went to want to do graphic design so I went to school for um multimedia first at a school for um multimedia first at a school for um multimedia first at a community college and I got an community college and I got an community college and I got an Associates in multimedia and through Associates in multimedia and through Associates in multimedia and through that process did an internship and I was that process did an internship and I was that process did an internship and I was like actually I really love the gra like actually I really love the gra like actually I really love the gra graic design part of it just like graic design part of it just like graic design part of it just like traditional graphic design like I love traditional graphic design like I love traditional graphic design like I love that and so I went to A&M Commerce for that and so I went to A&M Commerce for that and so I went to A&M Commerce for um art Direction and got a Bachelor of um art Direction and got a Bachelor of um art Direction and got a Bachelor of Fine Arts there and as part of that I Fine Arts there and as part of that I Fine Arts there and as part of that I did an internship at um an advertising did an internship at um an advertising did an internship at um an advertising agency in Dallas called agency in Dallas called agency in Dallas called slingshot and loved that and I was like slingshot and loved that and I was like slingshot and loved that and I was like I'm gonna be an art director I'm gonna I'm gonna be an art director I'm gonna I'm gonna be an art director I'm gonna work in advertising I'm gonna love it work in advertising I'm gonna love it work in advertising I'm gonna love it it's super fun um and all the while I it's super fun um and all the while I it's super fun um and all the while I did grow up in church um I came to know did grow up in church um I came to know did grow up in church um I came to know Jesus at a young age and you know have Jesus at a young age and you know have Jesus at a young age and you know have been part of church my whole life um been part of church my whole life um been part of church my whole life um love to sing so I'd never volunteered at love to sing so I'd never volunteered at love to sing so I'd never volunteered at my church in any sort of like design or my church in any sort of like design or my church in any sort of like design or art capacity but was always like singing art capacity but was always like singing art capacity but was always like singing and being in the worship team so um yeah and being in the worship team so um yeah and being in the worship team so um yeah so I got laid off actually at my so I got laid off actually at my so I got laid off actually at my advertising job in 2008 I think that was advertising job in 2008 I think that was advertising job in 2008 I think that was around the time of the recession yep and around the time of the recession yep and around the time of the recession yep and um through that process I worked there um through that process I worked there um through that process I worked there for about two and a half years and for about two and a half years and for about two and a half years and through that process I actually kind of through that process I actually kind of through that process I actually kind of came to loath it that sounds bad and it came to loath it that sounds bad and it came to loath it that sounds bad and it wasn't about the company it was more wasn't about the company it was more wasn't about the company it was more about me recognizing that I was about me recognizing that I was about me recognizing that I was advertising for you know just all these advertising for you know just all these advertising for you know just all these Brands and all these companies that Brands and all these companies that Brands and all these companies that you've heard of and it was really fun

you've heard of and it was really fun you've heard of and it was really fun and exciting but I started to get burned and exciting but I started to get burned and exciting but I started to get burned out um with the number of hours I was out um with the number of hours I was out um with the number of hours I was working and thinking forward we didn't working and thinking forward we didn't working and thinking forward we didn't have kids at the time I was like well I have kids at the time I was like well I have kids at the time I was like well I need to have kids eventually I wanted to need to have kids eventually I wanted to need to have kids eventually I wanted to not need to um I was like I don't know not need to um I was like I don't know not need to um I was like I don't know how this is going to work with that I how this is going to work with that I how this is going to work with that I was like plus the competition level in was like plus the competition level in was like plus the competition level in advertising and like pitting teams advertising and like pitting teams advertising and like pitting teams against teams and like I just wasn't against teams and like I just wasn't against teams and like I just wasn't super fulfilled by it I really just super fulfilled by it I really just super fulfilled by it I really just started getting disengaged because if started getting disengaged because if started getting disengaged because if I'm not passionate about something like I'm not passionate about something like I'm not passionate about something like I'm just not in it so I got laid off and I'm just not in it so I got laid off and I'm just not in it so I got laid off and that was tragic just because who wants that was tragic just because who wants that was tragic just because who wants to get laid off right um but I actually to get laid off right um but I actually to get laid off right um but I actually kind of saw it as a blessing because I'm kind of saw it as a blessing because I'm kind of saw it as a blessing because I'm like yes I don't have to do this anymore like yes I don't have to do this anymore like yes I don't have to do this anymore I told my husband at the time I was like I told my husband at the time I was like I told my husband at the time I was like you know what I'm totally done with you know what I'm totally done with you know what I'm totally done with advertising I just want to go get like a advertising I just want to go get like a advertising I just want to go get like a boring admin admin job somewhere and boring admin admin job somewhere and boring admin admin job somewhere and like just clock in and do my job and like just clock in and do my job and like just clock in and do my job and have free time that's all I want to do have free time that's all I want to do have free time that's all I want to do so um I actually took a year off and so um I actually took a year off and so um I actually took a year off and like um we didn't really have the money like um we didn't really have the money like um we didn't really have the money for that because my husband's a for that because my husband's a for that because my husband's a photographer and he was starting his photographer and he was starting his photographer and he was starting his career um but honestly I was just burned career um but honestly I was just burned career um but honestly I was just burned out I really didn't know what I wanted out I really didn't know what I wanted out I really didn't know what I wanted to do um I had this great degree I went to do um I had this great degree I went to do um I had this great degree I went to a great school I was like talented to a great school I was like talented to a great school I was like talented enough but I just didn't want to do it enough but I just didn't want to do it enough but I just didn't want to do it and so my husband was really gracious and so my husband was really gracious and so my husband was really gracious and I took some time off and like I did and I took some time off and like I did and I took some time off and like I did like you know like a side business and like you know like a side business and like you know like a side business and just you know for fun and some extra just you know for fun and some extra just you know for fun and some extra money um but then we started going to money um but then we started going to money um but then we started going to Northwest Bible Church at the time and Northwest Bible Church at the time and Northwest Bible Church at the time and actively got involved there and love the actively got involved there and love the actively got involved there and love the church and at the time my husband church and at the time my husband church and at the time my husband started in the worship team and um not started in the worship team and um not started in the worship team and um not on staff but just volunteering and got on staff but just volunteering and got on staff but just volunteering and got to know the worship Minister and was to know the worship Minister and was to know the worship Minister and was like hey they're graphic designers like hey they're graphic designers like hey they're graphic designers leaving like they're going to need leaving like they're going to need leaving like they're going to need somebody you have skills like we need

somebody you have skills like we need somebody you have skills like we need money we love the church you should do money we love the church you should do money we love the church you should do that and um I was like who don't want to that and um I was like who don't want to that and um I was like who don't want to do that nope don't want to do it and was do that nope don't want to do it and was do that nope don't want to do it and was just so funny so I was like okay but I just so funny so I was like okay but I just so funny so I was like okay but I love the church and I'm an anyag gr one love the church and I'm an anyag gr one love the church and I'm an anyag gr one so I always want to do the right thing so I always want to do the right thing so I always want to do the right thing yeah and like okay it makes sense like I yeah and like okay it makes sense like I yeah and like okay it makes sense like I do have the skills I want to help the do have the skills I want to help the do have the skills I want to help the church like I can do it and it's only church like I can do it and it's only church like I can do it and it's only part-time so I was like I'll just do it part-time so I was like I'll just do it part-time so I was like I'll just do it and help so I did I think I started like and help so I did I think I started like and help so I did I think I started like 24hour or 20 hours a week at the time 24hour or 20 hours a week at the time 24hour or 20 hours a week at the time back in 2009 um January 2009 it started back in 2009 um January 2009 it started back in 2009 um January 2009 it started as the graphic designer and honestly I as the graphic designer and honestly I as the graphic designer and honestly I started really enjoying it and I think started really enjoying it and I think started really enjoying it and I think it was God's process of healing me and it was God's process of healing me and it was God's process of healing me and um just restoring my passion for the um just restoring my passion for the um just restoring my passion for the gifts and talents that he put inside me gifts and talents that he put inside me gifts and talents that he put inside me and I was like oh like I can do this and and I was like oh like I can do this and and I was like oh like I can do this and I can do it for Jesus I don't have to I can do it for Jesus I don't have to I can do it for Jesus I don't have to like do it for Jack Daniels or you know like do it for Jack Daniels or you know like do it for Jack Daniels or you know whatever other whatever other whatever other brand I brand I brand I mean right there I did some fun stuff I mean right there I did some fun stuff I mean right there I did some fun stuff I I got some experience and I did some fun I got some experience and I did some fun I got some experience and I did some fun stuff and I I loved that experience but stuff and I I loved that experience but stuff and I I loved that experience but it just wasn't fulfilling in the same it just wasn't fulfilling in the same it just wasn't fulfilling in the same way and I'm like here I'm doing like a way and I'm like here I'm doing like a way and I'm like here I'm doing like a flyer for the women's ministry and I flyer for the women's ministry and I flyer for the women's ministry and I love it more you know because I knew love it more you know because I knew love it more you know because I knew that I was doing it for Jesus and so that I was doing it for Jesus and so that I was doing it for Jesus and so that was really fun and I just ended up that was really fun and I just ended up that was really fun and I just ended up loving it and obviously I'm still here loving it and obviously I'm still here loving it and obviously I'm still here um but yeah that was the beginning of it um but yeah that was the beginning of it um but yeah that was the beginning of it so what where do you want me to jump so what where do you want me to jump so what where do you want me to jump from there I was gonna say you know so from there I was gonna say you know so from there I was gonna say you know so so I mentioned that you're you're the so I mentioned that you're you're the so I mentioned that you're you're the com director and you're sharing earlier com director and you're sharing earlier com director and you're sharing earlier you're kind of like yeah that's God's you're kind of like yeah that's God's you're kind of like yeah that's God's sense of humor right there because you sense of humor right there because you sense of humor right there because you didn't want to be the in fact you you

so yeah walk us through just this the so yeah walk us through just this the so yeah walk us through just this the the latter part of the time that you've the latter part of the time that you've the latter part of the time that you've been at nor that you're you know with been at nor that you're you know with been at nor that you're you know with with your with your journey yeah so I with your with your journey yeah so I with your with your journey yeah so I was a graph designer and up and down on was a graph designer and up and down on was a graph designer and up and down on hours so so they didn't have enough hours so so they didn't have enough hours so so they didn't have enough money to pay for a full-time designer at money to pay for a full-time designer at money to pay for a full-time designer at the time so I started part-time and like the time so I started part-time and like the time so I started part-time and like I was really advocating for working more I was really advocating for working more I was really advocating for working more eventually because I'm like we got a lot eventually because I'm like we got a lot eventually because I'm like we got a lot of stuff to do here we can do so much of stuff to do here we can do so much of stuff to do here we can do so much more um and then they had the money so I more um and then they had the money so I more um and then they had the money so I went full-time um and then we didn't I went full-time um and then we didn't I went full-time um and then we didn't I was just I was the only graphic designer was just I was the only graphic designer was just I was the only graphic designer we didn't have a team so it it's just me we didn't have a team so it it's just me we didn't have a team so it it's just me um and I with my background of course um and I with my background of course um and I with my background of course working at an ad agency I could see the working at an ad agency I could see the working at an ad agency I could see the value of like structure and processes value of like structure and processes value of like structure and processes and systems early on and I tried to and systems early on and I tried to and systems early on and I tried to implement a few of those like you know implement a few of those like you know implement a few of those like you know creative grief like okay you've got this creative grief like okay you've got this creative grief like okay you've got this event what audience are you trying to event what audience are you trying to event what audience are you trying to reach and like what's your results that reach and like what's your results that reach and like what's your results that you're trying to get and like they were you're trying to get and like they were you're trying to get and like they were like we don't need that so I was like like we don't need that so I was like like we don't need that so I was like okay cool um I had no Authority so I was okay cool um I had no Authority so I was okay cool um I had no Authority so I was like well I guess we just won't do that like well I guess we just won't do that like well I guess we just won't do that then um but anyway so all the years went then um but anyway so all the years went then um but anyway so all the years went by and we started gaining some traction by and we started gaining some what she's doing you know I've she knows what she's doing you know I've she knows what she's doing you know I've proven myself and me and um my proven myself and me and um my proven myself and me and um my uh supervisor at the time the worship uh supervisor at the time the worship uh supervisor at the time the worship Minister started like being on the same Minister started like being on the same Minister started like being on the same page with like we really do need a com page with like we really do need a com page with like we really do need a com director like we kind of need to elevate director like we kind of need to elevate director like we kind of need to elevate this thing right like we got a lot of this thing right like we got a lot of this thing right like we got a lot of stuff going on and no strategy and at stuff going on and no strategy and at stuff going on and no strategy and at the time we had taken on another the time we had taken on another the time we had taken on another part-time designer and by this point I'd part-time designer and by this point I'd part-time designer and by this point I'd already had two kids so I had two kids

already had two kids so I had two kids already had two kids so I had two kids came back full-time um so all that had came back full-time um so all that had came back full-time um so all that had happened so yeah when we started looking happened so yeah when we started looking happened so yeah when we started looking for the com director like I was really for the com director like I was really for the com director like I was really excited because I didn't want to do that excited because I didn't want to do that excited because I didn't want to do that job I love being a designer so went job I love being a designer so went job I love being a designer so went through that process hired her first through that process hired her first through that process hired her first Communications um director and she was Communications um director and she was Communications um director and she was here for a couple years I loved her she here for a couple years I loved her she here for a couple years I loved her she was great um she did a she put a lot of was great um she did a she put a lot of was great um she did a she put a lot of processes and systems in place we grew processes and systems in place we grew processes and systems in place we grew it was awesome um and then she moved on it was awesome um and then she moved on it was awesome um and then she moved on um and we had an open position so at um and we had an open position so at um and we had an open position so at that point it was me as a full-time that point it was me as a full-time that point it was me as a full-time designer a part-time designer and then designer a part-time designer and then designer a part-time designer and then this open position for communications this open position for communications this open position for communications director I still didn't want to do it director I still didn't want to do it director I still didn't want to do it because actually I was parttime at that because actually I was parttime at that because actually I was parttime at that point the other girl was full-time point the other girl was full-time point the other girl was full-time there's been a lot um so I was like yeah there's been a lot um so I was like yeah there's been a lot um so I was like yeah this is great um we're gon to hire this is great um we're gon to hire this is great um we're gon to hire another communications director this is another communications director this is another communications director this is going to be awesome and so the position going to be awesome and so the position going to be awesome and so the position sat open for months it was like sat open for months it was like sat open for months it was like September to April when I took over the September to April when I took over the September to April when I took over the position wow and um I was not interested position wow and um I was not interested position wow and um I was not interested in doing that and I was like we're gonna in doing that and I was like we're gonna in doing that and I was like we're gonna find somebody great I'm not qualified I find somebody great I'm not qualified I find somebody great I'm not qualified I can't do that job um which tends to be can't do that job um which tends to be can't do that job um which tends to be my default mode is like false humility my default mode is like false humility my default mode is like false humility um and I think I operate a little bit um and I think I operate a little bit um and I think I operate a little bit out of fear which I'm growing in but my out of fear which I'm growing in but my out of fear which I'm growing in but my husband again was like you know you can husband again was like you know you can husband again was like you know you can totally do that like you should apply totally do that like you should apply totally do that like you should apply and people would ask me that I work with and people would ask me that I work with and people would ask me that I work with are you going to apply for that I'm like are you going to apply for that I'm like are you going to apply for that I'm like no not going to apply for that um so I no not going to apply for that um so I no not going to apply for that um so I have this weird story of like most have this weird story of like most have this weird story of like most people really want a job and apply for people really want a job and apply for people really want a job and apply for it and hope they get it I'm I've been it and hope they get it I'm I've been it and hope they get it I'm I've been the opposite here I'm like I don't want the opposite here I'm like I don't want the opposite here I'm like I don't want that job I'm like okay well I'll do it that job I'm like okay well I'll do it that job I'm like okay well I'll do it and so it's just this really kind of

the leader of the the comms team the leader of the the comms team the leader of the the comms team recognizing that you can't be the one recognizing that you can't be the one recognizing that you like I don't want to say no cuz you know like I don't want to say no cuz you know whatever but um you can't just operate whatever but um you can't just operate whatever but um you can't just operate like that on a regular basis where you like that on a regular basis where you like that on a regular basis where you just won't get anything done um so just won't get anything done um so just won't get anything done um so there's definitely um a logical side of there's definitely um a logical side of there's definitely um a logical side of it like just don't do it you know like it like just don't do it you know like it like just don't do it you know like what's gonna happen nothing's gonna burn what's gonna happen nothing's gonna burn what's gonna happen nothing's gonna burn down I mean you know so there's that down I mean you know so there's that down I mean you know so there's that part of it but then there like you said part of it but then there like you said part of it but then there like you said there's the part of it where you trust there's the part of it where you trust there's the part of it where you trust someone because what's been hard for me someone because what's been hard for me someone because what's been hard for me is learning how much feedback to give is learning how much feedback to give is learning how much feedback to give right like how detailed of feedback I right like how detailed of feedback I right like how detailed of feedback I give or how much idea I try and feed give or how much idea I try and feed give or how much idea I try and feed into it upfront because like my brain into it upfront because like my brain into it upfront because like my brain starts thinking I'm like oh we could do starts thinking I'm like oh we could do starts thinking I'm like oh we could do this we could do that but like I can't this we could do that but like I can't this we could do that but like I can't be the one to do it and so even if it's be the one to do it and so even if it's be the one to do it and so even if it's a good idea in my head if I tell the a good idea in my head if I tell the a good idea in my head if I tell the person that idea and then they try and person that idea and then they try and person that idea and then they try and do it it's really not going to end up do it it's really not going to end up do it it's really not going to end up like I thought anyways so there's a like I thought anyways so there's a like I thought anyways so there's a really weird disconnect um I'm not the really weird disconnect um I'm not the really weird disconnect um I'm not the only one who has good ideas other people only one who has good ideas other people only one who has good ideas other people have good ideas right and so I have to have good ideas right and so I have to have good ideas right and so I have to like let them explore that and um I do like let them explore that and um I do like let them explore that and um I do think I do think it helps knowing that think I do think it helps knowing that think I do think it helps knowing that I'm not God I mean that sounds dumb but I'm not God I mean that sounds dumb but I'm not God I mean that sounds dumb but like I just am not the source of all like I just am not the source of all like I just am not the source of all good things right God is the god is the good things right God is the god is the good things right God is the god is the real creative and he can put ideas in real creative and he can put ideas in real creative and he can put ideas in anyone's head and it isn't just my head anyone's head and it isn't just my head anyone's head and it isn't just my head that he puts ideas in and so um just that he puts ideas in and so um just that he puts ideas in and so um just starting to develop and I've had a starting to develop and I've had a starting to develop and I've had a really good supervisor that's challenged really good supervisor that's challenged really good supervisor that's challenged me in that too because he and I are a me in that too because he and I are a me in that too because he and I are a little bit Sim similar in that he's just little bit Sim similar in that he's just little bit Sim similar in that he's just really good at his craft honestly I really good at his craft honestly I really good at his craft honestly I think he's better at what he does than think he's better at what he does than think he's better at what he does than what I did and so there's also a

that you uh want to kind of share as a that you uh want to kind of share as a just sort of a last chance to speak to just sort of a last chance to speak to just sort of a last chance to speak to church Communications professionals or church Communications professionals or church Communications professionals or volunteers or church leaders who are volunteers or church leaders who are volunteers or church leaders who are maybe you know in the trenches of comps maybe you know in the trenches of comps maybe you know in the trenches of comps anything you want to anything you want to anything you want to share yeah I think um a couple things um share yeah I think um a couple things um share yeah I think um a couple things um don't be afraid to advocate for yourself don't be afraid to advocate for yourself don't be afraid to advocate for yourself but in a humble way um but in a humble way um but in a humble way um and pray about it and pray about it and pray about it first because the heart can be very first because the heart can be very first because the heart can be very deceitful and the Heart can be very um deceitful and the Heart can be very um deceitful and the Heart can be very um selfish and so I think praying is really selfish and so I think praying is really selfish and so I think praying is really good to check your heart I've had to do good to check your heart I've had to do good to check your heart I've had to do that so many different times um and then that so many different times um and then that so many different times um and then I one verse that stuck out to me as I I one verse that stuck out to me as I I one verse that stuck out to me as I was thinking about just my time here is was thinking about just my time here is was thinking about just my time here is Proverbs 169 the heart of a man plans Proverbs 169 the heart of a man plans Proverbs 169 the heart of a man plans his way but the Lord establishes his his way but the Lord establishes his his way but the Lord establishes his steps and that's kind of been my journey steps and that's kind of been my journey steps and that's kind of been my journey I'm like I thought I wanted to do XYZ I'm like I thought I wanted to do XYZ I'm like I thought I wanted to do XYZ but like God had different plans and so but like God had different plans and so but like God had different plans and so I'm just trying to follow whatever his I'm just trying to follow whatever his I'm just trying to follow whatever his next step is I don't know what's next next step is I don't know what's next next step is I don't know what's next but you know yeah so I think humility is but you know yeah so I think humility is but you know yeah so I think humility is huge it's hard in church and you have to huge it's hard in church and you have to huge it's hard in church and you have to be careful because you don't want to um be careful because you don't want to um be careful because you don't want to um you don't want to like undersell you don't want to like undersell you don't want to like undersell yourself but you also want to be careful yourself but you also want to be careful yourself but you also want to be careful about doing it in a a way that's about doing it in a a way that's about doing it in a a way that's Christlike advocating for yourself in Christlike advocating for yourself in Christlike advocating for yourself in that way and understanding that it is that way and understanding that it is that way and understanding that it is God's church and trusting that he can God's church and trusting that he can God's church and trusting that he can change leaders hearts and um in his change leaders hearts and um in his change leaders hearts and um in his timing timing timing so it's hard sometimes jener yeah it is so it's hard sometimes jener yeah it is so it's hard sometimes jener yeah it is you know what I appreciate you uh it's you know what I appreciate you uh it's you know what I appreciate you uh it's been a privilege to know you I guess been a privilege to know you I guess been a privilege to know you I guess we're going on five years or so close to we're going on five years or so close to we're going on five years or so close to that since since we first connected with that since since we first connected with that since since we first connected with each other so it's been great and each other so it's been great and each other so it's been great and exciting to to watch you uh you know
