bit past this crisis although i know bit past this crisis although i know kova is going to be kova is going to be kova is going to be for a long time but you know it's the for a long time but you know it's the for a long time but you know it's the shock is over it's like look at new shock is over it's like look at new shock is over it's like look at new reality reality reality so a pastor out there is thinking about so a pastor out there is thinking about so a pastor out there is thinking about planting a church what advice do you planting a church what advice do you planting a church what advice do you do you give to him do not tread lightly do you give to him do not tread lightly do you give to him do not tread lightly uh this is uh this is not for the faint uh this is uh this is not for the faint uh this is uh this is not for the faint of heart it really isn't and every of heart it really isn't and every of heart it really isn't and every single context is different single context is different single context is different um where i'm coming from is going to be um where i'm coming from is going to be um where i'm coming from is going to be different than if you were to plant in different than if you were to plant in different than if you were to plant in the midwest or planting the bible belt the midwest or planting the bible belt the midwest or planting the bible belt or plant out in or plant out in or plant out in the west coast you know it's just it's a the west coast you know it's just it's a the west coast you know it's just it's a different different different animal no matter where you go um but animal no matter where you go um but animal no matter where you go um but truly if if god's called you if god is truly if if god's called you if god is truly if if god's called you if god is leading you leading you leading you then he's leading you if if you're in it then he's leading you if if you're in it then he's leading you if if you're in it if you're if you're married and your if you're if you're married and your if you're if you're married and your spouse is in it spouse is in it spouse is in it and people around you are saying like and people around you are saying like and people around you are saying like you know you know you know if we think you've got this you know if we think you've got this you know if we think you've got this you know even if you you know you don't feel even if you you know you don't feel even if you you know you don't feel equipped you're not ready i mean that equipped you're not ready i mean that equipped you're not ready i mean that was my story i didn't feel ready i was my story i didn't feel ready i was my story i didn't feel ready i didn't feel didn't feel didn't feel i just went to seminary for four years i just went to seminary for four years i just went to seminary for four years and i was like let's go do a church and i was like let's go do a church and i was like let's go do a church plant like plant like plant like i didn't i don't know what that meant i didn't i don't know what that meant i didn't i don't know what that meant right i mean i just knew that right i mean i just knew that right i mean i just knew that statistically speaking it was the most statistically speaking it was the most statistically speaking it was the most effective way to reach unchurched and effective way to reach unchurched and effective way to reach unchurched and unchristian people and it's like i want unchristian people and it's like i want unchristian people and it's like i want to do that and i just said i want help to do that and i just said i want help to do that and i just said i want help please help me and so along the way god please help me and so along the way god please help me and so along the way god sent sent sent people so if that's you if god has sent people so if that's you if god has sent people so if that's you if god has sent people into your life if you yourself people into your life if you yourself people into your life if you yourself felt the call like i just want to felt the call like i just want to felt the call like i just want to introduce people to jesus then introduce people to jesus then introduce people to jesus then yeah pursue it you know it's hard but yeah pursue it you know it's hard but yeah pursue it you know it's hard but it's a it's a it's a what does paul say um in first timothy what does paul say um in first timothy what does paul say um in first timothy it says it says it says uh it's a it's a noble calling a uh it's a it's a noble calling a uh it's a it's a noble calling a beautiful calling kalu ergu

beautiful calling kalu ergu beautiful calling kalu ergu in greek yeah in greek yeah in greek yeah so so give me a couple examples where so so give me a couple examples where so so give me a couple examples where god's showing up big time for you god's showing up big time for you god's showing up big time for you well you know i think it's just been in well you know i think it's just been in well you know i think it's just been in um i think in the brokenness um i think in the brokenness um i think in the brokenness in in the in the valleys so the shadow in in the in the valleys so the shadow in in the in the valleys so the shadow of death of death of death um and and that's church planning no um and and that's church planning no um and and that's church planning no matter what's happening whether it's a matter what's happening whether it's a matter what's happening whether it's a pandemic or not i mean pandemic or not i mean pandemic or not i mean it's it's like peaks and valleys you're it's it's like peaks and valleys you're it's it's like peaks and valleys you're just like just like just like peak um you know all these people showed peak um you know all these people showed peak um you know all these people showed up at this event up at this event up at this event or we're just having a great sermon or we're just having a great sermon or we're just having a great sermon series and people are responding well series and people are responding well series and people are responding well whatever it is there's some sort of whatever it is there's some sort of whatever it is there's some sort of external metric that just makes you feel external metric that just makes you feel external metric that just makes you feel like you know you're banging the drums like you know you're banging the drums like you know you're banging the drums this is awesome i love it and then this is awesome i love it and then this is awesome i love it and then there's the times where it's like there's the times where it's like there's the times where it's like as a friend of mine who planted a church as a friend of mine who planted a church as a friend of mine who planted a church out in in queens out in in queens out in in queens he says like planning a church is like he says like planning a church is like he says like planning a church is like throwing a birthday party for yourself throwing a birthday party for yourself throwing a birthday party for yourself every week and then hoping who's every week and then hoping who's every week and then hoping who's wondering who's going to come and i was wondering who's going to come and i was wondering who's going to come and i was like oh my gosh that's so true bro i like oh my gosh that's so true bro i like oh my gosh that's so true bro i just just just like it it couldn't be overly low it's like it it couldn't be overly low it's like it it couldn't be overly low it's like like like well attendance was not what i wanted well attendance was not what i wanted well attendance was not what i wanted there's 23 people in the room like that there's 23 people in the room like that there's 23 people in the room like that is not what i wanted today but that's is not what i wanted today but that's is not what i wanted today but that's what happens what happens what happens um and and uh so he's showing up in the um and and uh so he's showing up in the um and and uh so he's showing up in the midst of that midst of that midst of that and showing up in the midst of things and showing up in the midst of things and showing up in the midst of things that you would never expect which is that you would never expect which is that you would never expect which is kind of where kind of where kind of where this microchurch thing kind of came into this microchurch thing kind of came into this microchurch thing kind of came into the being as one of my the being as one of my the being as one of my uh another pastor who i speak with on a uh another pastor who i speak with on a uh another pastor who i speak with on a regular basis regular basis regular basis um he's looking at doing similar um he's looking at doing similar um he's looking at doing similar models what we're doing and he's kind of models what we're doing and he's kind of models what we're doing and he's kind of like it seems like

like it seems like like it seems like this pandemic kind of took out the queen this pandemic kind of took out the queen this pandemic kind of took out the queen as it were it made us as it were it made us as it were it made us free free ourselves up from thinking free free ourselves up from thinking free free ourselves up from thinking that the sunday service that the sunday service that the sunday service this corporate experience had was the this corporate experience had was the this corporate experience had was the end-all be-all end-all be-all end-all be-all um and it really freed us to start um and it really freed us to start um and it really freed us to start thinking well what if thinking well what if thinking well what if we could do church really differently we could do church really differently we could do church really differently and if like there was never really any and if like there was never really any and if like there was never really any room for that room for that room for that right in a pre-pandemic world but now right in a pre-pandemic world but now right in a pre-pandemic world but now it's like well there's a lot of it's like well there's a lot of it's like well there's a lot of different ways we could do this how different ways we could do this how different ways we could do this how could we do it could we do it could we do it and so i think that god's shown up even and so i think that god's shown up even and so i think that god's shown up even in the midst of this in the midst of this in the midst of this crisis and has said like i you can still crisis and has said like i you can still crisis and has said like i you can still be be be church you can still be my my church and church you can still be my my church and church you can still be my my church and be my witnesses be my witnesses be my witnesses and be on mission um even now and be on mission um even now and be on mission um even now and it's just seeing those little and it's just seeing those little and it's just seeing those little movements of people toward movements of people toward movements of people toward faith right now in this crisis people faith right now in this crisis people faith right now in this crisis people who are asking lots of great questions who are asking lots of great questions who are asking lots of great questions people who um have been helped and have people who um have been helped and have people who um have been helped and have been been been been drawing near to christ in the midst been drawing near to christ in the midst been drawing near to christ in the midst of crisis of crisis of crisis and seeing that as a pastor is so i mean and seeing that as a pastor is so i mean and seeing that as a pastor is so i mean it's like that's why i'm here you know it's like that's why i'm here you know it's like that's why i'm here you know i'm here to see that happen yeah i'm here to see that happen yeah i'm here to see that happen yeah really rewarding so talk to us about really rewarding so talk to us about really rewarding so talk to us about this this this concept of what you what you are as a concept of what you what you are as a concept of what you what you are as a church you said you said a micro church church you said you said a micro church church you said you said a micro church yeah so micro church quick definition is yeah so micro church quick definition is yeah so micro church quick definition is just essentially a small group of people just essentially a small group of people just essentially a small group of people that meets on sundays that meets on sundays that meets on sundays and they go together there is a video and they go together there is a video and they go together there is a video this this this is not like across the board but for is not like across the board but for is not like across the board but for what we do we create a video what we do we create a video what we do we create a video uh and uh my wife is our worship uh and uh my wife is our worship uh and uh my wife is our worship director i'm director i'm director i'm pastor and so we put together a nice pastor and so we put together a nice pastor and so we put together a nice service that you could watch on youtube service that you could watch on youtube service that you could watch on youtube by yourself but we make it highly

by yourself but we make it highly by yourself but we make it highly interactive and so it's interactive and so it's interactive and so it's a song in the beginning there's a a song in the beginning there's a a song in the beginning there's a scripture reading you do together scripture reading you do together scripture reading you do together and then the sermon is just a sermon but and then the sermon is just a sermon but and then the sermon is just a sermon but instead of having like a straight instead of having like a straight instead of having like a straight through through through monologue it's more of a dialogue where monologue it's more of a dialogue where monologue it's more of a dialogue where the you're prompted to pause the you're prompted to pause the you're prompted to pause with your group discuss the question with your group discuss the question with your group discuss the question uh and there's like that's like three uh and there's like that's like three uh and there's like that's like three times you pause in the sermon and so you times you pause in the sermon and so you times you pause in the sermon and so you kind of get to wrestle with the concept kind of get to wrestle with the concept kind of get to wrestle with the concept wrestle with what's being preached and wrestle with what's being preached and wrestle with what's being preached and what's being taught and then at the end what's being taught and then at the end what's being taught and then at the end of the day you're able to pray together of the day you're able to pray together of the day you're able to pray together as a small group and and that's you got as a small group and and that's you got as a small group and and that's you got you got church you got church you got church right there and you're also um some of right there and you're also um some of right there and you're also um some of us meet us meet us meet online and zoom and other of us meet in online and zoom and other of us meet in online and zoom and other of us meet in person and so there's a very person and so there's a very person and so there's a very uh rich community aspect as well uh rich community aspect as well uh rich community aspect as well um and where it came came out of was um and where it came came out of was um and where it came came out of was uh just like anybody else i think uh just like anybody else i think uh just like anybody else i think probably we were thinking probably we were thinking probably we were thinking we were launching we launched just like we were launching we launched just like we were launching we launched just like anyone else did church planning wise we anyone else did church planning wise we anyone else did church planning wise we launched a corporate service it was launched a corporate service it was launched a corporate service it was every single sunday there was set up every single sunday there was set up every single sunday there was set up there was tear down all those there was tear down all those there was tear down all those volunteer roles hospitality the whole volunteer roles hospitality the whole volunteer roles hospitality the whole nine yards nine yards nine yards and uh did that for six straight months and uh did that for six straight months and uh did that for six straight months like i said and then we got in the like i said and then we got in the like i said and then we got in the pandemic and then pandemic and then pandemic and then as we got into a nice rhythm we were as we got into a nice rhythm we were as we got into a nice rhythm we were getting into the middle of the summer getting into the middle of the summer getting into the middle of the summer like what's we need to think about a like what's we need to think about a like what's we need to think about a plan like how do we get plan like how do we get plan like how do we get back to what we were doing yeah and so back to what we were doing yeah and so back to what we were doing yeah and so we we we uh we said that we would do phase two uh we said that we would do phase two uh we said that we would do phase two was going to be this kind of was going to be this kind of was going to be this kind of small group kind of group watching small group kind of group watching small group kind of group watching experience experience experience so that we could have that piece of so that we could have that piece of so that we could have that piece of community that was a big lesson to this community that was a big lesson to this community that was a big lesson to this pandemic for me is like community is not pandemic for me is like community is not pandemic for me is like community is not an optional or a tertiary consideration

an optional or a tertiary consideration an optional or a tertiary consideration like this is a big deal like this is a big deal like this is a big deal so um that's a big part of what it means so um that's a big part of what it means so um that's a big part of what it means to be church and so it's okay let's do to be church and so it's okay let's do to be church and so it's okay let's do that that that we got to it got to be time and start we got to it got to be time and start we got to it got to be time and start looking at this and i just kind of looking at this and i just kind of looking at this and i just kind of pulled the term that i had heard um pulled the term that i had heard um pulled the term that i had heard um microchurch just kind of pulled it out microchurch just kind of pulled it out microchurch just kind of pulled it out of the air it's like let's just call of the air it's like let's just call of the air it's like let's just call them microchurches them microchurches them microchurches so we start planning for this august so we start planning for this august so we start planning for this august thing and i'm researching i'm putting thing and i'm researching i'm putting thing and i'm researching i'm putting this together this together this together uh we put together this experience we're uh we put together this experience we're uh we put together this experience we're very happy with it we started very happy with it we started very happy with it we started august uh first weekend in august and august uh first weekend in august and august uh first weekend in august and carried through four weeks and what i carried through four weeks and what i carried through four weeks and what i noticed noticed noticed jason was just like people are jason was just like people are jason was just like people are responding responding responding so well there's like i mean community so well there's like i mean community so well there's like i mean community people are coming together people are coming together people are coming together really rich conversation um and i know really rich conversation um and i know really rich conversation um and i know any pastor out there will know exactly any pastor out there will know exactly any pastor out there will know exactly what i'm talking about that would be what i'm talking about that would be what i'm talking about that would be like like like someone who comes to you after the someone who comes to you after the someone who comes to you after the service taking your hand they're like oh service taking your hand they're like oh service taking your hand they're like oh pastor that was a great sermon pastor that was a great sermon pastor that was a great sermon like oh really you know you want to say like oh really you know you want to say like oh really you know you want to say well what what grabbed you well what what grabbed you well what what grabbed you like i i don't i don't know like i i don't i don't know like i i don't i don't know and you're like okay well i hope that and you're like okay well i hope that and you're like okay well i hope that maybe it'll come to you later like right maybe it'll come to you later like right maybe it'll come to you later like right so there's like this so there's like this so there's like this i think there's so much of this kind of i think there's so much of this kind of i think there's so much of this kind of um um um we don't have a lot of time to digest we don't have a lot of time to digest we don't have a lot of time to digest things things things you don't have a lot of time to process you don't have a lot of time to process you don't have a lot of time to process through information so we're getting through information so we're getting through information so we're getting so much information is thrown at us all so much information is thrown at us all so much information is thrown at us all the time and i think that the time and i think that the time and i think that that church is symptomatic of that we that church is symptomatic of that we that church is symptomatic of that we have like a sermon might be a dynamite have like a sermon might be a dynamite have like a sermon might be a dynamite sermon it might have impacted their sermon it might have impacted their sermon it might have impacted their heart it mattered to them in the moment heart it mattered to them in the moment heart it mattered to them in the moment but they're like i don't remember but they're like i don't remember but they're like i don't remember i have to where are we going to eat you

i have to where are we going to eat you i have to where are we going to eat you know i'm thinking about brunch know i'm thinking about brunch know i'm thinking about brunch and so what i noticed is like as i and so what i noticed is like as i and so what i noticed is like as i connected with people my leaders like connected with people my leaders like connected with people my leaders like how did things go and they're just how did things go and they're just how did things go and they're just telling me like i loved it when you said telling me like i loved it when you said telling me like i loved it when you said this this this and we had this great conversation about and we had this great conversation about and we had this great conversation about that and and just would that and and just would that and and just would it was like i'm like this is good people it was like i'm like this is good people it was like i'm like this is good people it sounds like people are being it sounds like people are being it sounds like people are being discipled right now that's what i would discipled right now that's what i would discipled right now that's what i would that's what i'd like to see that's what i'd like to see that's what i'd like to see and so that really got me excited that and so that really got me excited that and so that really got me excited that me me me got me really looking into where where got me really looking into where where got me really looking into where where did i find this church did i find this church did i find this church this microchurch idea where did it come this microchurch idea where did it come this microchurch idea where did it come from and so i looked into from and so i looked into from and so i looked into the tampa underground which is a the tampa underground which is a the tampa underground which is a microchurch network and also the kansas microchurch network and also the kansas microchurch network and also the kansas city underground both city underground both city underground both places that you can look at um places that you can look at um places that you can look at um and just really was captured by what and just really was captured by what and just really was captured by what they were describing they were describing they were describing and and really feeling and and really feeling and and really feeling they they really hit they hit a nerve they they really hit they hit a nerve they they really hit they hit a nerve whenever they would talk about whenever they would talk about whenever they would talk about the sunday morning experience a lot if the sunday morning experience a lot if the sunday morning experience a lot if you think about sunday mornings you think about sunday mornings you think about sunday mornings and this is no i mean i did the same and this is no i mean i did the same and this is no i mean i did the same thing i there's a lot of energy thing i there's a lot of energy thing i there's a lot of energy that's expended to create a sunday that's expended to create a sunday that's expended to create a sunday morning worship experience if you have morning worship experience if you have morning worship experience if you have one service or if you have five services one service or if you have five services one service or if you have five services whatever you have whatever you have whatever you have 50 people or 5 000 people it's still 50 people or 5 000 people it's still 50 people or 5 000 people it's still a lot a lot of work yeah and there's set a lot a lot of work yeah and there's set a lot a lot of work yeah and there's set up there's tear down there's gotta make up there's tear down there's gotta make up there's tear down there's gotta make the coffee you gotta do this gotta do the coffee you gotta do this gotta do the coffee you gotta do this gotta do that and there's this that and there's this that and there's this you know you're getting your volunteers you know you're getting your volunteers you know you're getting your volunteers together you're trying to make phone together you're trying to make phone together you're trying to make phone calls someone drops out you gotta get calls someone drops out you gotta get calls someone drops out you gotta get another person is this like another person is this like another person is this like it's this i mean hours hours 10 it's this i mean hours hours 10 it's this i mean hours hours 10 15 hours goes into just creating an 15 hours goes into just creating an 15 hours goes into just creating an event event event every single week it's like well what if

want to meet people want to meet people uh in their in their felt need moments uh in their in their felt need moments uh in their in their felt need moments right and create right and create right and create environments or events to bring people environments or events to bring people environments or events to bring people together that's a little bit of a together that's a little bit of a together that's a little bit of a challenge with uh with the social challenge with uh with the social challenge with uh with the social distancing and the distancing and the distancing and the you know the rules and things that you you know the rules and things that you you know the rules and things that you have to kind of follow um have to kind of follow um have to kind of follow um but as as those hopefully lighten up but as as those hopefully lighten up but as as those hopefully lighten up then that probably gives you some new then that probably gives you some new then that probably gives you some new ideas and some hope for how you can get ideas and some hope for how you can get ideas and some hope for how you can get people together people together people together um to have yeah events to meet more new um to have yeah events to meet more new um to have yeah events to meet more new people people people yeah absolutely and i think um yeah absolutely and i think um yeah absolutely and i think um the thing about the pandemic that has the thing about the pandemic that has the thing about the pandemic that has been good been good been good which is probably not something you hear which is probably not something you hear which is probably not something you hear in the same sentence very often in the same sentence very often in the same sentence very often um is you know we i don't think um is you know we i don't think um is you know we i don't think a lot of us were thinking we could have a lot of us were thinking we could have a lot of us were thinking we could have an outreach event on zoom an outreach event on zoom an outreach event on zoom i don't know i don't think we can do i don't know i don't think we can do i don't know i don't think we can do alpha course online i don't think we can alpha course online i don't think we can alpha course online i don't think we can do do do this you know dance lesson you can do a this you know dance lesson you can do a this you know dance lesson you can do a lot of these things lot of these things lot of these things online and potentially as i noticed online and potentially as i noticed online and potentially as i noticed engage more people engage more people engage more people or people that have not had not come and or people that have not had not come and or people that have not had not come and this was this was this was something i noticed people who hadn't something i noticed people who hadn't something i noticed people who hadn't come to anything in come to anything in come to anything in ages uh no social events i hadn't seen ages uh no social events i hadn't seen ages uh no social events i hadn't seen them in a long time them in a long time them in a long time they came to the online events um they came to the online events um they came to the online events um and there's actually some trade-offs and and there's actually some trade-offs and and there's actually some trade-offs and people who came into the regular people who came into the regular people who came into the regular in-person stuff before didn't really in-person stuff before didn't really in-person stuff before didn't really come out to the online event so you get come out to the online event so you get come out to the online event so you get you know but you know but you know but in a in a post-covered world we'll be in a in a post-covered world we'll be in a in a post-covered world we'll be able to do both able to do both able to do both and i think expand our reach and so i and i think expand our reach and so i and i think expand our reach and so i think there'll be more opportunities for think there'll be more opportunities for think there'll be more opportunities for sure sure sure and especially as things start opening and especially as things start opening and especially as things start opening and up and people start wanting to host and up and people start wanting to host and up and people start wanting to host events and events and events and um get togethers and networking things
