doing today yeah awesome well uh yeah so um i uh

yeah awesome well uh yeah so um i uh yeah awesome well uh yeah so um i uh grew up was raised and grew up in los grew up was raised and grew up in los grew up was raised and grew up in los angeles california down there in angeles california down there in angeles california down there in hollywood um i actually grew up in hollywood um i actually grew up in hollywood um i actually grew up in hollywood my dad was a hollywood my dad was a hollywood my dad was a construction coordinator he um oversaw construction coordinator he um oversaw construction coordinator he um oversaw uh studio sets and all that for the uh studio sets and all that for the uh studio sets and all that for the motion picture business and so i grew up motion picture business and so i grew up motion picture business and so i grew up in hollywood around hollywood stars in hollywood around hollywood stars in hollywood around hollywood stars around some of the elite just going and around some of the elite just going and around some of the elite just going and being able to be a part of that and so being able to be a part of that and so being able to be a part of that and so that was like that was partially like that was like that was partially like that was like that was partially like some of the goal if you would i grew up some of the goal if you would i grew up some of the goal if you would i grew up in a christian family in a christian family in a christian family going to church i loved church i thought going to church i loved church i thought going to church i loved church i thought church was like the bomb i thought it church was like the bomb i thought it church was like the bomb i thought it was the greatest place to be um i was the greatest place to be um i was the greatest place to be um i remember coming back from like a cruise remember coming back from like a cruise remember coming back from like a cruise one one year and um all the people were one one year and um all the people were one one year and um all the people were like we're gonna have this big gathering like we're gonna have this big gathering like we're gonna have this big gathering a cruise ship and i was like a cruise ship and i was like a cruise ship and i was like i gotta go to church i was like 12 years i gotta go to church i was like 12 years i gotta go to church i was like 12 years old um so i loved god i loved the church old um so i loved god i loved the church old um so i loved god i loved the church i loved what the big c church was doing i loved what the big c church was doing i loved what the big c church was doing and so and being a part of that and so and so and being a part of that and so and so and being a part of that and so um that mixed with hollywood was a um that mixed with hollywood was a um that mixed with hollywood was a little interesting and a little little interesting and a little little interesting and a little different you kind of had your friday different you kind of had your friday different you kind of had your friday personality and then you had your personality and then you had your personality and then you had your weekend personality um weekend personality um weekend personality um and so really kind of grew up in that uh and so really kind of grew up in that uh and so really kind of grew up in that uh with my family um and so but my dad was with my family um and so but my dad was with my family um and so but my dad was very heavily involved at our church and very heavily involved at our church and very heavily involved at our church and uh he would do a big stage productions uh he would do a big stage productions uh he would do a big stage productions and he would build the stages uh for and he would build the stages uh for and he would build the stages uh for those but then he would also uh write those but then he would also uh write those but then he would also uh write some of them so uh the church that i some of them so uh the church that i some of them so uh the church that i worked at for 14 years worked at for 14 years worked at for 14 years he started our passion play there which he started our passion play there which he started our passion play there which is like the big easter pageant if you is like the big easter pageant if you is like the big easter pageant if you would and he wrote the original of that would and he wrote the original of that would and he wrote the original of that and built you know two-story 3d sets and

and built you know two-story 3d sets and and built you know two-story 3d sets and um and growing up around that i started um and growing up around that i started um and growing up around that i started to to to just love theater um and so we called it just love theater um and so we called it just love theater um and so we called it in church world we called that in church world we called that in church world we called that production back where i was where i come production back where i was where i come production back where i was where i come from um not just the sound and lighting from um not just the sound and lighting from um not just the sound and lighting side of production but um and so yeah side of production but um and so yeah side of production but um and so yeah grew up around that grew up around grew up around that grew up around grew up around that grew up around performers and started getting into that performers and started getting into that performers and started getting into that myself um and i had access to i was a myself um and i had access to i was a myself um and i had access to i was a little spoiled i had access to a lot of little spoiled i had access to a lot of little spoiled i had access to a lot of uh uh uh really um really um really um talented very professional people um talented very professional people um talented very professional people um that were in the business and so being that were in the business and so being that were in the business and so being able to kind of work with them and and able to kind of work with them and and able to kind of work with them and and kind of gain some more skill um i kind of gain some more skill um i kind of gain some more skill um i actually thought actually thought actually thought i thought that i was going to go to i thought that i was going to go to i thought that i was going to go to broadway and be on broadway that was the broadway and be on broadway that was the broadway and be on broadway that was the big goal for kim kersey at the time and big goal for kim kersey at the time and big goal for kim kersey at the time and i was just like okay i'm going to go to i was just like okay i'm going to go to i was just like okay i'm going to go to broadway i'm gonna be a broadway star broadway i'm gonna be a broadway star broadway i'm gonna be a broadway star you know back then they made 300 a week you know back then they made 300 a week you know back then they made 300 a week and i was like that's amazing 300 a week and i was like that's amazing 300 a week and i was like that's amazing 300 a week could you imagine making that much money could you imagine making that much money could you imagine making that much money singing on a stage and so that was like singing on a stage and so that was like singing on a stage and so that was like that was it that was the big goal and um that was it that was the big goal and um that was it that was the big goal and um soon um soon um soon um like kind of near the end of high school like kind of near the end of high school like kind of near the end of high school figured out that god had a different figured out that god had a different figured out that god had a different plan for him and that was not it uh so plan for him and that was not it uh so plan for him and that was not it uh so ended up not heading to new york not ended up not heading to new york not ended up not heading to new york not heading to broadway but instead um got heading to broadway but instead um got heading to broadway but instead um got involved and uh started part-time involved and uh started part-time involved and uh started part-time at the church that i was at and uh i was at the church that i was at and uh i was at the church that i was at and uh i was 17 years old i was a senior in high 17 years old i was a senior in high 17 years old i was a senior in high school and started full school and started full school and started full i guess you could call it an internship

i guess you could call it an internship i guess you could call it an internship they called it part-time but it would they called it part-time but it would they called it part-time but it would have been an internship in a sense um in have been an internship in a sense um in have been an internship in a sense um in our production department doing stage our production department doing stage our production department doing stage shows um and it was just kind of for me shows um and it was just kind of for me shows um and it was just kind of for me there was this like slap in the face there was this like slap in the face there was this like slap in the face moment that i felt like was a slap in moment that i felt like was a slap in moment that i felt like was a slap in the face moment of god of like kind of the face moment of god of like kind of the face moment of god of like kind of you're not gonna be on the stage you're you're not gonna be on the stage you're you're not gonna be on the stage you're gonna help us run behind the stage and i gonna help us run behind the stage and i gonna help us run behind the stage and i was like but it's me what are you was like but it's me what are you was like but it's me what are you talking about like i need to be on the talking about like i need to be on the talking about like i need to be on the stage um but i started working behind stage um but i started working behind stage um but i started working behind the scenes and really falling in love the scenes and really falling in love the scenes and really falling in love with that side of things of with that side of things of with that side of things of from from from the technology and the stage design and the technology and the stage design and the technology and the stage design and costuming and just all of that and costuming and just all of that and costuming and just all of that and really really really that year my senior year really started that year my senior year really started that year my senior year really started changing my focus from being a big star changing my focus from being a big star changing my focus from being a big star that everybody wants to be to maybe at that everybody wants to be to maybe at that everybody wants to be to maybe at the supporting cast if you would um and the supporting cast if you would um and the supporting cast if you would um and coming up under and really helping other coming up under and really helping other coming up under and really helping other people uh succeed um but also seeing people uh succeed um but also seeing people uh succeed um but also seeing that as success myself and seeing how i that as success myself and seeing how i that as success myself and seeing how i could use that uh that desire and that could use that uh that desire and that could use that uh that desire and that skill for skill for skill for the lord and uh and so that's that'll the lord and uh and so that's that'll the lord and uh and so that's that'll change senior after my senior year i change senior after my senior year i change senior after my senior year i ended up again not going off to new york ended up again not going off to new york ended up again not going off to new york but instead i stayed there in california but instead i stayed there in california but instead i stayed there in california stayed at the church i was at um ended stayed at the church i was at um ended stayed at the church i was at um ended up working there for 14 years and um up working there for 14 years and um up working there for 14 years and um and running productions and so and we and running productions and so and we and running productions and so and we would do like i said a big easter show would do like i said a big easter show would do like i said a big easter show pageant we'd do a big christmas show

pageant we'd do a big christmas show pageant we'd do a big christmas show where you'd have 14 15 000 people coming where you'd have 14 15 000 people coming where you'd have 14 15 000 people coming through the doors to come see your show through the doors to come see your show through the doors to come see your show and you say and back then and you say and back then and you say and back then like stage productions were the thing like stage productions were the thing like stage productions were the thing like everybody was doing big stage shows like everybody was doing big stage shows like everybody was doing big stage shows and uh and so it was it was definitely and uh and so it was it was definitely and uh and so it was it was definitely something that people would come out and something that people would come out and something that people would come out and and hear the message of jesus christ and and hear the message of jesus christ and and hear the message of jesus christ and it was super amazing we'd do a fourth of it was super amazing we'd do a fourth of it was super amazing we'd do a fourth of july show so we did these stage shows july show so we did these stage shows july show so we did these stage shows and um and again just kind of kind of and um and again just kind of kind of and um and again just kind of kind of going okay i'm not going okay i'm not going okay i'm not on the stage um and i may be behind the on the stage um and i may be behind the on the stage um and i may be behind the scenes um but this is something that i scenes um but this is something that i scenes um but this is something that i can do and i can use these skills i can can do and i can use these skills i can can do and i can use these skills i can use this desire and this passion in use this desire and this passion in use this desire and this passion in these ways for the lord for for christ these ways for the lord for for christ these ways for the lord for for christ and for the kingdom um and for the kingdom um and for the kingdom um and kind of started even moving from the and kind of started even moving from the and kind of started even moving from the stage to the weekend experience um and stage to the weekend experience um and stage to the weekend experience um and and really um kind of my last six years and really um kind of my last six years and really um kind of my last six years there at that church there at that church there at that church getting highly involved in the weekend getting highly involved in the weekend getting highly involved in the weekend experience and um experience and um experience and um worship and choirs and what was worship and choirs and what was worship and choirs and what was happening on the weekend um the happening on the weekend um the happening on the weekend um the programming of the services and all that programming of the services and all that programming of the services and all that and started working that into things so and started working that into things so and started working that into things so by the time i left that church um the by the time i left that church um the by the time i left that church um the next church that i ended up uh going to next church that i ended up uh going to next church that i ended up uh going to that they weren't doing stage shows that they weren't doing stage shows that they weren't doing stage shows they weren't like they were like why they weren't like they were like why they weren't like they were like why would we do an easter pageant that's so would we do an easter pageant that's so would we do an easter pageant that's so the 80s and i'm like okay the 80s and i'm like okay the 80s and i'm like okay from the 80s um but from the 80s um but from the 80s um but one of those like okay i can't but the one of those like okay i can't but the one of those like okay i can't but the services became a very important like

services became a very important like services became a very important like very engaging like let's let's open the very engaging like let's let's open the very engaging like let's let's open the soon opener let's do something that soon opener let's do something that soon opener let's do something that maybe you hear on the radio but how is maybe you hear on the radio but how is maybe you hear on the radio but how is that going to impact somebody that's that going to impact somebody that's that going to impact somebody that's coming into church for the first time coming into church for the first time coming into church for the first time and so this kind of new idea of bringing and so this kind of new idea of bringing and so this kind of new idea of bringing in those those gifts those talents in a in those those gifts those talents in a in those those gifts those talents in a new and different way and um and running new and different way and um and running new and different way and um and running church uh services as opposed to those church uh services as opposed to those church uh services as opposed to those stage shows stage shows stage shows so started doing that and that's uh so started doing that and that's uh so started doing that and that's uh where i'm at at a different church right where i'm at at a different church right where i'm at at a different church right now here in indiana um i'm at a now here in indiana um i'm at a now here in indiana um i'm at a different church but that is really uh different church but that is really uh different church but that is really uh what i'm doing it's weekend experience what i'm doing it's weekend experience what i'm doing it's weekend experience it's um it's how are people engaged from it's um it's how are people engaged from it's um it's how are people engaged from the parking lot to the seat because the the parking lot to the seat because the the parking lot to the seat because the parking lot it starts there and you guys parking lot it starts there and you guys parking lot it starts there and you guys you guys know that you guys are in you guys know that you guys are in you guys know that you guys are in marketing and communications it is more marketing and communications it is more marketing and communications it is more important how we are reaching them in important how we are reaching them in important how we are reaching them in the parking lot how we are engaging with the parking lot how we are engaging with the parking lot how we are engaging with them to go here is this place where you them to go here is this place where you them to go here is this place where you can come and you can maybe find healing can come and you can maybe find healing can come and you can maybe find healing you can learn about christ because you can learn about christ because you can learn about christ because they're not going to get to the sea they're not going to get to the sea they're not going to get to the sea without that uh without marketing it without that uh without marketing it without that uh without marketing it well without communicating it well well without communicating it well well without communicating it well without being open-handed and going okay without being open-handed and going okay without being open-handed and going okay church is not perfect but come and let's church is not perfect but come and let's church is not perfect but come and let's kind of like figure this out together kind of like figure this out together kind of like figure this out together and um and um and um and so it's been it's been a fun and and so it's been it's been a fun and and so it's been it's been a fun and wild ride but uh that's how i ended up wild ride but uh that's how i ended up wild ride but uh that's how i ended up where i ended up today wow where i ended up today wow where i ended up today wow what else what what a journey in a story what else what what a journey in a story what else what what a journey in a story thank you for sharing that you know a thank you for sharing that you know a thank you for sharing that you know a couple things come to my mind i would couple things come to my mind i would couple things come to my mind i would like to run this by you

i've never learned before and how to i've never learned before and how to manage those two personalities it's manage those two personalities it's manage those two personalities it's interesting because i've always managed interesting because i've always managed interesting because i've always managed teams of people and you go okay i have a teams of people and you go okay i have a teams of people and you go okay i have a lot of personalities on my team uh and lot of personalities on my team uh and lot of personalities on my team uh and so this person coming in you know with so this person coming in you know with so this person coming in you know with the enneagram this one may be a nine and the enneagram this one may be a nine and the enneagram this one may be a nine and so i need to hit it in this way um and so i need to hit it in this way um and so i need to hit it in this way um and this person coming in is an eight so i this person coming in is an eight so i this person coming in is an eight so i need to hit the situation in this way need to hit the situation in this way need to hit the situation in this way but now you're managing personalities in but now you're managing personalities in but now you're managing personalities in a way that's like this is not enneagram a way that's like this is not enneagram a way that's like this is not enneagram this is truly the senior pastors who god this is truly the senior pastors who god this is truly the senior pastors who god has chosen for this church and managing has chosen for this church and managing has chosen for this church and managing through that so it's been a real growth through that so it's been a real growth through that so it's been a real growth and learning uh season and um and learning uh season and um and learning uh season and um and that's really kind of the heightened and that's really kind of the heightened and that's really kind of the heightened thing for for 2022 right now and and how thing for for 2022 right now and and how thing for for 2022 right now and and how we are transitioning our our senior we are transitioning our our senior we are transitioning our our senior pastor out in our senior pastor elect in pastor out in our senior pastor elect in pastor out in our senior pastor elect in uh to northview so yeah that's that's uh to northview so yeah that's that's uh to northview so yeah that's that's it's it's a little bit different of a it's it's a little bit different of a it's it's a little bit different of a season season season yeah it's a lot i'm gonna double click yeah it's a lot i'm gonna double click yeah it's a lot i'm gonna double click on one thing that you said there on one thing that you said there on one thing that you said there um then i'm gonna throw it over to jason um then i'm gonna throw it over to jason um then i'm gonna throw it over to jason for any final thoughts uh and then we're for any final thoughts uh and then we're for any final thoughts uh and then we're gonna wrap up here in just a second um gonna wrap up here in just a second um gonna wrap up here in just a second um when you made the statement a moment ago when you made the statement a moment ago when you made the statement a moment ago that your comfort zone is working 14 to that your comfort zone is working 14 to that your comfort zone is working 14 to 20 weeks out 20 weeks out 20 weeks out you're probably singing the song that you're probably singing the song that you're probably singing the song that every communications and creative every communications and creative every communications and creative director that ever listened to this director that ever listened to this director that ever listened to this podcast would like to be singing as well podcast would like to be singing as well podcast would like to be singing as well most pastors are working week to week most pastors are working week to week most pastors are working week to week right it's a very very different uh right it's a very very different uh right it's a very very different uh dynamic dynamic dynamic i was i was a creative arts director at i was i was a creative arts director at i was i was a creative arts director at a church for 10 years and i was a senior a church for 10 years and i was a senior a church for 10 years and i was a senior pastor of a church for five and a half pastor of a church for five and a half pastor of a church for five and a half years and i kind of sat in both of those years and i kind of sat in both of those years and i kind of sat in both of those seats this is the lesson that i learned

seats this is the lesson that i learned seats this is the lesson that i learned for those of you who are listening and for those of you who are listening and for those of you who are listening and who are trying to lead up to your senior who are trying to lead up to your senior who are trying to lead up to your senior leaders to get them to work further leaders to get them to work further leaders to get them to work further ahead ahead ahead you you you said exactly what i would you you you said exactly what i would you you you said exactly what i would have said kim because you're working on have said kim because you're working on have said kim because you're working on something 12 14 15 weeks out your senior something 12 14 15 weeks out your senior something 12 14 15 weeks out your senior pastor comes to you today and says i pastor comes to you today and says i pastor comes to you today and says i need something now need something now need something now it you actually have more flexibility it you actually have more flexibility it you actually have more flexibility to pivot and to do something creative to pivot and to do something creative to pivot and to do something creative now now now because you're already working so far because you're already working so far because you're already working so far ahead and i think a lot of people who ahead and i think a lot of people who ahead and i think a lot of people who don't understand the creative process um don't understand the creative process um don't understand the creative process um feel like well if i'm working too far feel like well if i'm working too far feel like well if i'm working too far ahead and i land the plane on everything ahead and i land the plane on everything ahead and i land the plane on everything three months or five months or eight three months or five months or eight three months or five months or eight months out then i that i don't give months out then i that i don't give months out then i that i don't give myself the room for the creativity that myself the room for the creativity that myself the room for the creativity that i need but i actually think that it it i need but i actually think that it it i need but i actually think that it it creates more space in your team's creates more space in your team's creates more space in your team's schedule schedule schedule to be creative uh we just had um uh phil to be creative uh we just had um uh phil to be creative uh we just had um uh phil cook on the podcast a couple of episodes cook on the podcast a couple of episodes cook on the podcast a couple of episodes ago and he's just released a book called ago and he's just released a book called ago and he's just released a book called ideas on a deadline and the whole idea ideas on a deadline and the whole idea ideas on a deadline and the whole idea is kind of how do you be creative when is kind of how do you be creative when is kind of how do you be creative when you're under pressure and uh you're under pressure and uh you're under pressure and uh really the the truth is i don't mean to really the the truth is i don't mean to really the the truth is i don't mean to throw phil under the bus because the throw phil under the bus because the throw phil under the bus because the book is really good but really what he's book is really good but really what he's book is really good but really what he's talking about more in the book than talking about more in the book than talking about more in the book than ideas on a deadline is having ideas on a deadline is having ideas on a deadline is having disciplines in the way you manage disciplines in the way you manage disciplines in the way you manage creativity because when you have creativity because when you have creativity because when you have disciplines in your creativity and disciplines in your creativity and disciplines in your creativity and rhythm in your creativity you have more rhythm in your creativity you have more rhythm in your creativity you have more flexibility in your creativity and flexibility in your creativity and flexibility in your creativity and that's basically what you affirmed there that's basically what you affirmed there that's basically what you affirmed there so i just wanted to double click on that so i just wanted to double click on that so i just wanted to double click on that for a moment um jason for a moment um jason for a moment um jason there's a lot kim has said a lot here

there's a lot kim has said a lot here there's a lot kim has said a lot here today a lot to to kind of extrapolate um today a lot to to kind of extrapolate um today a lot to to kind of extrapolate um any any thoughts or any any any final any any thoughts or any any any final any any thoughts or any any any final comments before we uh before we wrap comments before we uh before we wrap comments before we uh before we wrap this up this up this up yeah yeah i'm just sitting here yeah yeah i'm just sitting here yeah yeah i'm just sitting here listening to kim and your story and listening to kim and your story and listening to kim and your story and it's so cool how god is is using you it's so cool how god is is using you it's so cool how god is is using you uh to reach uh to reach uh to reach so many people and and for those for the so many people and and for those for the so many people and and for those for the other on the other side of that's other on the other side of that's other on the other side of that's listening to this listening to this listening to this i think my advice would be i think my advice would be i think my advice would be just keep tuning in to what the spirit's just keep tuning in to what the spirit's just keep tuning in to what the spirit's prompting you to do prompting you to do prompting you to do um because i think what you know kim's um because i think what you know kim's um because i think what you know kim's story what she shared today there's story what she shared today there's story what she shared today there's definitely a bunch of different nuggets definitely a bunch of different nuggets definitely a bunch of different nuggets that you can pull from that you can pull from that you can pull from chew on chew on chew on and and figure out how can you improve and and figure out how can you improve and and figure out how can you improve what you're doing in ministry what you're doing in ministry what you're doing in ministry and you know it isn't that and you know it isn't that and you know it isn't that it isn't that it isn't that it isn't that you're you know it's not like hey the you're you know it's not like hey the you're you know it's not like hey the most creative person you know wins most creative person you know wins most creative person you know wins that's not it at all but it's tuning that's not it at all but it's tuning that's not it at all but it's tuning into what the spirit is telling you to into what the spirit is telling you to into what the spirit is telling you to do and prompting you to do and in what do and prompting you to do and in what do and prompting you to do and in what you just said earlier bart where where you just said earlier bart where where you just said earlier bart where where phil you know this idea where when we phil you know this idea where when we phil you know this idea where when we get up against a deadline that's when a get up against a deadline that's when a get up against a deadline that's when a kind of our best comes out of us because kind of our best comes out of us because kind of our best comes out of us because you know we just we're so dialed in i you know we just we're so dialed in i you know we just we're so dialed in i think there's some management there think there's some management there think there's some management there right and so i think it's really great right and so i think it's really great right and so i think it's really great that you have so far out in advance but that you have so far out in advance but that you have so far out in advance but then you know that that week comes i bet then you know that that week comes i bet then you know that that week comes i bet you guys produce a lot of creative you guys produce a lot of creative you guys produce a lot of creative things inside those couple few days things inside those couple few days things inside those couple few days because well you're forced to but now because well you're forced to but now because well you're forced to but now because you're forced to because you're forced to because you're forced to juice juice juice you get a lot of squeeze you get a lot you get a lot of squeeze you get a lot you get a lot of squeeze you get a lot of juice from that squeeze so i think of juice from that squeeze so i think of juice from that squeeze so i think that's a that's a that's a that's something to take i guess that
