assuming that since you served a church assuming that since you served a church in the bay area that you were living in in the bay area that you were living in in the bay area that you were living in the bay area is that correct the bay area is that correct the bay area is that correct no it's actually a suburb of sacramento no it's actually a suburb of sacramento no it's actually a suburb of sacramento called granite bay so right in the called granite bay so right in the called granite bay so right in the central valley and uh serve at uh central valley and uh serve at uh central valley and uh serve at uh i think the largest church in northern i think the largest church in northern i think the largest church in northern california california california yeah okay yeah why don't you tell us a yeah okay yeah why don't you tell us a yeah okay yeah why don't you tell us a little bit about the church and and just little bit about the church and and just little bit about the church and and just tell us a little bit of your story about tell us a little bit of your story about tell us a little bit of your story about how you got into ministry and how you how you got into ministry and how you how you got into ministry and how you ended up where you are today ended up where you are today ended up where you are today yeah so first on bayside church so yeah so first on bayside church so yeah so first on bayside church so bayside uh again granite bay california bayside uh again granite bay california bayside uh again granite bay california uh i started with bayside in 1997. uh i started with bayside in 1997. uh i started with bayside in 1997. there were 500 people in a cafeteria there were 500 people in a cafeteria there were 500 people in a cafeteria we were about two years old at that we were about two years old at that we were about two years old at that point and point and point and instantly got involved in the last uh instantly got involved in the last uh instantly got involved in the last uh 20-some years we've grown to eight 20-some years we've grown to eight 20-some years we've grown to eight campuses uh pre-code we were a little campuses uh pre-code we were a little campuses uh pre-code we were a little over 20 000 people in seats on a weekend over 20 000 people in seats on a weekend over 20 000 people in seats on a weekend and uh last year the fastest growing and uh last year the fastest growing and uh last year the fastest growing church in the country church in the country church in the country which is surprising after the church was which is surprising after the church was which is surprising after the church was 20 something years old that you became 20 something years old that you became 20 something years old that you became fast growing uh and joined the church fast growing uh and joined the church fast growing uh and joined the church and uh because a friend of mine invited and uh because a friend of mine invited and uh because a friend of mine invited me and instantly wanted to get involved me and instantly wanted to get involved me and instantly wanted to get involved and the first thing that i did was start and the first thing that i did was start and the first thing that i did was start as a road warrior which was directing as a road warrior which was directing as a road warrior which was directing people into the parking lot on the people into the parking lot on the people into the parking lot on the weekend uh but eventually that led to a weekend uh but eventually that led to a weekend uh but eventually that led to a variety of other uh jobs serving the variety of other uh jobs serving the variety of other uh jobs serving the church around the early 2000 like 1999 church around the early 2000 like 1999 church around the early 2000 like 1999 2000 was asked to join the board of the 2000 was asked to join the board of the 2000 was asked to join the board of the church was on the board for 10 years church was on the board for 10 years church was on the board for 10 years and was the vice chair of the board for and was the vice chair of the board for and was the vice chair of the board for the last five years the last five years the last five years uh that i served on the board 2011 comes uh that i served on the board 2011 comes uh that i served on the board 2011 comes around and around and around and i'm asked to join the staff as the

i'm asked to join the staff as the i'm asked to join the staff as the executive pastor executive pastor executive pastor so our current executive pastor had left so our current executive pastor had left so our current executive pastor had left uh was was uh asked to come and serve at uh was was uh asked to come and serve at uh was was uh asked to come and serve at a local university as their president uh a local university as their president uh a local university as their president uh our senior pastor called me and said uh our senior pastor called me and said uh our senior pastor called me and said uh you know more about the inner workings you know more about the inner workings you know more about the inner workings of bayside than anybody you've got to of bayside than anybody you've got to of bayside than anybody you've got to take his seat and he was very persuasive take his seat and he was very persuasive take his seat and he was very persuasive about it and so that's what led me to about it and so that's what led me to about it and so that's what led me to bayside bayside bayside wow so okay so wow so okay so wow so okay so so now so now so now uh you're in a new role uh you're you're uh you're in a new role uh you're you're uh you're in a new role uh you're you're doing the church goals thing so can you doing the church goals thing so can you doing the church goals thing so can you can you talk talk to our audience about can you talk talk to our audience about can you talk talk to our audience about what's church goals what's your role what's church goals what's your role what's church goals what's your role yeah absolutely so and and that story yeah absolutely so and and that story yeah absolutely so and and that story started really what i was doing in the started really what i was doing in the started really what i was doing in the marketplace before bayside so 1995 1996 marketplace before bayside so 1995 1996 marketplace before bayside so 1995 1996 i own a company that converts paper to i own a company that converts paper to i own a company that converts paper to cd-rom so we were on the we were like cd-rom so we were on the we were like cd-rom so we were on the we were like kinko's in reverse kinko's in reverse kinko's in reverse uh we would take large quantities of uh we would take large quantities of uh we would take large quantities of paper scan them and put them onto cds it paper scan them and put them onto cds it paper scan them and put them onto cds it was really the cutting edge or the was really the cutting edge or the was really the cutting edge or the beginning of um creating electronic beginning of um creating electronic beginning of um creating electronic documents that we would search for on documents that we would search for on documents that we would search for on the internet the internet the internet and uh so i and i would find that people and uh so i and i would find that people and uh so i and i would find that people would leave me would leave me would leave me my employment for like 10 cents an hour my employment for like 10 cents an hour my employment for like 10 cents an hour so i was paying like 10 an hour if so i was paying like 10 an hour if so i was paying like 10 an hour if somebody offered them 10 and 10 cents somebody offered them 10 and 10 cents somebody offered them 10 and 10 cents boom they bolt boom they bolt boom they bolt and it was painful both in terms of and it was painful both in terms of and it was painful both in terms of recruiting but training and uh all of recruiting but training and uh all of recruiting but training and uh all of the things that that go into the company the things that that go into the company the things that that go into the company we operated 24 hours a day seven days a we operated 24 hours a day seven days a we operated 24 hours a day seven days a week uh i had over 100 employees week uh i had over 100 employees week uh i had over 100 employees and so i thought i've got to stem this and so i thought i've got to stem this and so i thought i've got to stem this i've got to do something to turn this i've got to do something to turn this i've got to do something to turn this around and started to study everything around and started to study everything around and started to study everything that i could possibly find on how do you

that i could possibly find on how do you that i could possibly find on how do you attract and more importantly how do you attract and more importantly how do you attract and more importantly how do you retain employees retain employees retain employees and i kept coming across study after and i kept coming across study after and i kept coming across study after study that said the same things was the study that said the same things was the study that said the same things was the number one thing that people wanted in number one thing that people wanted in number one thing that people wanted in the workplace was to enjoy the people the workplace was to enjoy the people the workplace was to enjoy the people they work with yeah the number two thing they work with yeah the number two thing they work with yeah the number two thing that they wanted was to fulfill the that they wanted was to fulfill the that they wanted was to fulfill the contract and the contract was really contract and the contract was really contract and the contract was really simple i'll give you ten dollars an hour simple i'll give you ten dollars an hour simple i'll give you ten dollars an hour you use your skills and talents to you use your skills and talents to you use your skills and talents to produce something of interest for the produce something of interest for the produce something of interest for the company putting paper through machines company putting paper through machines company putting paper through machines yeah the third thing they wanted was yeah the third thing they wanted was yeah the third thing they wanted was rules today we would call that rules today we would call that rules today we would call that probably mission probably mission probably mission purpose purpose purpose values values values um especially with millennials they um especially with millennials they um especially with millennials they really want to work for companies that really want to work for companies that really want to work for companies that are producing something of value for are producing something of value for are producing something of value for society they want a missional purpose society they want a missional purpose society they want a missional purpose interestingly your company is called interestingly your company is called interestingly your company is called missional marketing yeah uh and it's missional marketing yeah uh and it's missional marketing yeah uh and it's very appropriate the fourth thing they very appropriate the fourth thing they very appropriate the fourth thing they wanted was recognition for the job they wanted was recognition for the job they wanted was recognition for the job they did and the fifth thing was money so did and the fifth thing was money so did and the fifth thing was money so isn't it interesting that money wasn't isn't it interesting that money wasn't isn't it interesting that money wasn't the first thing the first thing the first thing unless you didn't get one two or three unless you didn't get one two or three unless you didn't get one two or three then money moves to number one then money moves to number one then money moves to number one so i uh i built a little program around so i uh i built a little program around so i uh i built a little program around uh doing exactly that making sure that uh doing exactly that making sure that uh doing exactly that making sure that my employees absolutely love the people my employees absolutely love the people my employees absolutely love the people they work with number two that they were they work with number two that they were they work with number two that they were that they knew how to fulfill the that they knew how to fulfill the that they knew how to fulfill the contract and be successful contract and be successful contract and be successful third that we had rules in place third that we had rules in place third that we had rules in place i did this and everything changed um i did this and everything changed um i did this and everything changed um literally literally stopped turnover literally literally stopped turnover literally literally stopped turnover and i created these this little program and i created these this little program and i created these this little program where we would just talk about our where we would just talk about our where we would just talk about our mission our purpose uh we would do mission our purpose uh we would do mission our purpose uh we would do things to get people to to know each things to get people to to know each things to get people to to know each other and uh literally i was taking

other and uh literally i was taking other and uh literally i was taking things that i was hearing in church on things that i was hearing in church on things that i was hearing in church on sunday and applying them in business on sunday and applying them in business on sunday and applying them in business on monday and uh monday and uh monday and uh ended up um ended up um ended up um employees started taking the information employees started taking the information employees started taking the information that that we were doing home and pretty that that we were doing home and pretty that that we were doing home and pretty soon their spouses were contacting me soon their spouses were contacting me soon their spouses were contacting me going hey could you bring this to my going hey could you bring this to my going hey could you bring this to my company this is really good stuff and company this is really good stuff and company this is really good stuff and before i know it about 30 companies are before i know it about 30 companies are before i know it about 30 companies are subscribing to it it was kind of the subscribing to it it was kind of the subscribing to it it was kind of the early podcasts of the time i mean there early podcasts of the time i mean there early podcasts of the time i mean there weren't podcasts in 1995 um but it was weren't podcasts in 1995 um but it was weren't podcasts in 1995 um but it was the the paper version of it and kind of the the paper version of it and kind of the the paper version of it and kind of an email version of it an email version of it an email version of it and before i knew it they were saying and before i knew it they were saying and before i knew it they were saying you got to come to my company and do you got to come to my company and do you got to come to my company and do this this this and teach it and so it turned into a and teach it and so it turned into a and teach it and so it turned into a consulting company we wrote a book on it consulting company we wrote a book on it consulting company we wrote a book on it started taking this to companies around started taking this to companies around started taking this to companies around the country the country the country and in 2005 again i'm serving on the and in 2005 again i'm serving on the and in 2005 again i'm serving on the board at bayside and our senior pastor board at bayside and our senior pastor board at bayside and our senior pastor comes to me goes hey comes to me goes hey comes to me goes hey there's a church that called us they're there's a church that called us they're there's a church that called us they're in decline they're really struggling in decline they're really struggling in decline they're really struggling do you think you could take what you've do you think you could take what you've do you think you could take what you've shown to businesses on how to turn them shown to businesses on how to turn them shown to businesses on how to turn them around and apply to the church and it around and apply to the church and it around and apply to the church and it literally became the i took everything literally became the i took everything literally became the i took everything that we had done with businesses that we had done with businesses that we had done with businesses went into the church and sure enough the went into the church and sure enough the went into the church and sure enough the church propped right back up and got church propped right back up and got church propped right back up and got healthy and started growing again and uh healthy and started growing again and uh healthy and started growing again and uh that was the first church and ever since that was the first church and ever since that was the first church and ever since then uh consistently we'd get calls then uh consistently we'd get calls then uh consistently we'd get calls every month or so would go out and teach every month or so would go out and teach every month or so would go out and teach them the same thing and that was the them the same thing and that was the them the same thing and that was the beginning of church goals beginning of church goals beginning of church goals wow 2011 rolls around wow 2011 rolls around wow 2011 rolls around and uh and uh and uh again i get a call from our senior again i get a call from our senior again i get a call from our senior pastor and he said hey our executive pastor and he said hey our executive pastor and he said hey our executive pastor left you got to come and take his

pastor left you got to come and take his pastor left you got to come and take his job he's very persuasive job he's very persuasive job he's very persuasive i'm i'm i'm you know very successfully teaching you know very successfully teaching you know very successfully teaching companies around the country how to do companies around the country how to do companies around the country how to do what we call business goals what we call business goals what we call business goals and churches how to do church goals but and churches how to do church goals but and churches how to do church goals but inevitably come on staff and you know inevitably come on staff and you know inevitably come on staff and you know guys honestly i think it was god saying guys honestly i think it was god saying guys honestly i think it was god saying i want you to go in the church and i want you to go in the church and i want you to go in the church and experience experience experience experience working and employment inside experience working and employment inside experience working and employment inside the church and really see what's going the church and really see what's going the church and really see what's going on behind the curtain in churches on behind the curtain in churches on behind the curtain in churches for experience because i'm teaming you for experience because i'm teaming you for experience because i'm teaming you up to really go and do this around the up to really go and do this around the up to really go and do this around the country and around the world with lots country and around the world with lots country and around the world with lots and lots of churches and so came on and lots of churches and so came on and lots of churches and so came on staff we're still working with churches staff we're still working with churches staff we're still working with churches and uh and uh and uh but the business side kind of waned a but the business side kind of waned a but the business side kind of waned a tiny bit because i wasn't spending full tiny bit because i wasn't spending full tiny bit because i wasn't spending full time at it time at it time at it until about two years into being until about two years into being until about two years into being executive pastor and a group of executive pastor and a group of executive pastor and a group of businessmen in our church came and said businessmen in our church came and said businessmen in our church came and said hey hey hey why are you stop why did you stop why are you stop why did you stop why are you stop why did you stop teaching what you were doing to teaching what you were doing to teaching what you were doing to companies we've read your book and uh companies we've read your book and uh companies we've read your book and uh it's good stuff would you consider it's good stuff would you consider it's good stuff would you consider maybe taking us through what you're maybe taking us through what you're maybe taking us through what you're teaching to companies maybe as a teaching to companies maybe as a teaching to companies maybe as a ministry ministry ministry and i thought oh that's interesting and and i thought oh that's interesting and and i thought oh that's interesting and i said um okay i'll tell you what i'll i said um okay i'll tell you what i'll i said um okay i'll tell you what i'll i'll take you through this as a ministry i'll take you through this as a ministry i'll take you through this as a ministry under two conditions under two conditions under two conditions condition number one condition number one condition number one you have to tithe you have to tithe you have to tithe if i'm going to show you how to be if i'm going to show you how to be if i'm going to show you how to be successful using biblical principles and successful using biblical principles and successful using biblical principles and everything that we put into the program everything that we put into the program everything that we put into the program is entirely biblically based it's is entirely biblically based it's is entirely biblically based it's exactly how do you love people and how exactly how do you love people and how exactly how do you love people and how do you love god in the workplace yeah uh do you love god in the workplace yeah uh do you love god in the workplace yeah uh i said when i show you how to be i said when i show you how to be i said when i show you how to be successful using biblical principles successful using biblical principles successful using biblical principles when that happens and you're really

when that happens and you're really when that happens and you're really successful give credit where credit is successful give credit where credit is successful give credit where credit is due due due and you can do that by tithing and you can do that by tithing and you can do that by tithing and i said the second thing is if i'm and i said the second thing is if i'm and i said the second thing is if i'm going to do this as a ministry i don't going to do this as a ministry i don't going to do this as a ministry i don't want to spend all my time finding people want to spend all my time finding people want to spend all my time finding people to come to the ministry fill your seat to come to the ministry fill your seat to come to the ministry fill your seat if you found the class to be of value if you found the class to be of value if you found the class to be of value then tell somebody else and have them then tell somebody else and have them then tell somebody else and have them come and i said i'll give you what i was come and i said i'll give you what i was come and i said i'll give you what i was teaching companies in 12 months teaching companies in 12 months teaching companies in 12 months in a six week class in a six week class in a six week class will be once a week for six weeks for an will be once a week for six weeks for an will be once a week for six weeks for an hour each time hour each time hour each time so we did the first class so we did the first class so we did the first class fills right up with 12 12 or 14 people fills right up with 12 12 or 14 people fills right up with 12 12 or 14 people uh as soon as it's done everyone's uh as soon as it's done everyone's uh as soon as it's done everyone's coming to go on hey i got a couple of coming to go on hey i got a couple of coming to go on hey i got a couple of people that really need to be here people that really need to be here people that really need to be here but a couple of them don't go to the but a couple of them don't go to the but a couple of them don't go to the church church church would it be okay if i brought some would it be okay if i brought some would it be okay if i brought some people from outside the church people from outside the church people from outside the church unintended consequence turned out to be unintended consequence turned out to be unintended consequence turned out to be that about half of each class fills up that about half of each class fills up that about half of each class fills up with people outside the church because with people outside the church because with people outside the church because it's turned into this this great it's turned into this this great it's turned into this this great outreach to businesses in our community outreach to businesses in our community outreach to businesses in our community so that was the beginning of business so that was the beginning of business so that was the beginning of business goals as a ministry we kept doing church goals as a ministry we kept doing church goals as a ministry we kept doing church goals goals goals and and and that brings us to about 2019 that brings us to about 2019 that brings us to about 2019 and uh three classes in a row said the and uh three classes in a row said the and uh three classes in a row said the same thing somebody would stand up at same thing somebody would stand up at same thing somebody would stand up at the end of the class and go and we would the end of the class and go and we would the end of the class and go and we would be running classes about every eight be running classes about every eight be running classes about every eight weeks just year round weeks just year round weeks just year round uh and somebody in each class was down uh and somebody in each class was down uh and somebody in each class was down and say this is great stuff why aren't and say this is great stuff why aren't and say this is great stuff why aren't you taking it around the country like you taking it around the country like you taking it around the country like maybe like ramsay did with financial maybe like ramsay did with financial maybe like ramsay did with financial peace yeah why are you why are you just peace yeah why are you why are you just peace yeah why are you why are you just doing it a baseline i thought well doing it a baseline i thought well doing it a baseline i thought well that's interesting that's interesting that's interesting and then our our board they they got in and then our our board they they got in and then our our board they they got in touch with me and they said hey we keep touch with me and they said hey we keep touch with me and they said hey we keep hearing people that have gone through hearing people that have gone through hearing people that have gone through the class the class the class the business goals class and um are just

the business goals class and um are just the business goals class and um are just really uh excited about what they really uh excited about what they really uh excited about what they learned they're deploying their business learned they're deploying their business learned they're deploying their business they said i know that you have a they said i know that you have a they said i know that you have a condition that they have to tithe condition that they have to tithe condition that they have to tithe why don't you run some numbers for us why don't you run some numbers for us why don't you run some numbers for us and tell us if people really do change and tell us if people really do change and tell us if people really do change their tithing their tithing their tithing well well well since day one i already had done that since day one i already had done that since day one i already had done that since i was in charge of uh the church since i was in charge of uh the church since i was in charge of uh the church from a financial point of view i could from a financial point of view i could from a financial point of view i could look at giving records and i would just look at giving records and i would just look at giving records and i would just anecdotally look and so you say you know anecdotally look and so you say you know anecdotally look and so you say you know hey i wonder if the people change their hey i wonder if the people change their hey i wonder if the people change their tithing and i was always really really tithing and i was always really really tithing and i was always really really um pleasantly surprised that after every um pleasantly surprised that after every um pleasantly surprised that after every class class class giving would go up between 25 and a giving would go up between 25 and a giving would go up between 25 and a hundred thousand dollars hundred thousand dollars hundred thousand dollars just from a class of 10 to 12 people and just from a class of 10 to 12 people and just from a class of 10 to 12 people and it was consistent every single class and it was consistent every single class and it was consistent every single class and that that really got everybody's that that really got everybody's that that really got everybody's attention they're like you need to be attention they're like you need to be attention they're like you need to be doing this around the country and so i'm doing this around the country and so i'm doing this around the country and so i'm coming to an interior uh coming to an interior uh coming to an interior uh really what happened was we started to really what happened was we started to really what happened was we started to reach out to churches and say reach out to churches and say reach out to churches and say do you have a ministry to the businesses do you have a ministry to the businesses do you have a ministry to the businesses in your church in your church in your church and they'd say no we've always wanted and they'd say no we've always wanted and they'd say no we've always wanted one we just don't know how to connect one we just don't know how to connect one we just don't know how to connect with them with them with them and i said let me tell you about and i said let me tell you about and i said let me tell you about business goals you can launch this and business goals you can launch this and business goals you can launch this and we do it exactly like financial peace we do it exactly like financial peace we do it exactly like financial peace it's pre-recorded we have a coach it's pre-recorded we have a coach it's pre-recorded we have a coach and uh they'd all be excited saying yeah and uh they'd all be excited saying yeah and uh they'd all be excited saying yeah i want to do that and then i would tell i want to do that and then i would tell i want to do that and then i would tell them why don't you first go through the them why don't you first go through the them why don't you first go through the church version of it called church goals church version of it called church goals church version of it called church goals come to church goals first you can do it come to church goals first you can do it come to church goals first you can do it as a church it's going to help your as a church it's going to help your as a church it's going to help your church you're going to learn all the church you're going to learn all the church you're going to learn all the things that we learned at bayside of uh things that we learned at bayside of uh things that we learned at bayside of uh about how we grew and how we became who about how we grew and how we became who about how we grew and how we became who we are it's incorporated into the class we are it's incorporated into the class we are it's incorporated into the class and then you'll be better suited to and then you'll be better suited to and then you'll be better suited to launch business goals

launch business goals launch business goals little did we know that right around the little did we know that right around the little did we know that right around the corner was coming corner was coming corner was coming coveted and uh so kobe hits and uh in coveted and uh so kobe hits and uh in coveted and uh so kobe hits and uh in the last 18 months uh over 200 churches the last 18 months uh over 200 churches the last 18 months uh over 200 churches have now gone through the church goals have now gone through the church goals have now gone through the church goals program program program and these were churches that were and these were churches that were and these were churches that were literally dead or dying or about to literally dead or dying or about to literally dead or dying or about to close their doors because the pastors close their doors because the pastors close their doors because the pastors were discouraged were discouraged were discouraged uh they were literally at their their uh they were literally at their their uh they were literally at their their wits in saying my church has wits in saying my church has wits in saying my church has dismissed they're all at home dismissed they're all at home dismissed they're all at home uh and we're struggling and i just feel uh and we're struggling and i just feel uh and we're struggling and i just feel really uh in despair about this and we'd really uh in despair about this and we'd really uh in despair about this and we'd show them how to turn that around show them how to turn that around show them how to turn that around and the two go together in that we first and the two go together in that we first and the two go together in that we first first again show the church how it can first again show the church how it can first again show the church how it can uh using the same principles start to uh using the same principles start to uh using the same principles start to grow grow grow and then and then and then in about the third month after we work in about the third month after we work in about the third month after we work with them then we tell them why don't with them then we tell them why don't with them then we tell them why don't you launch the business schools class you launch the business schools class you launch the business schools class and it'll help you not only relaunch and it'll help you not only relaunch and it'll help you not only relaunch outreach in your church outreach in your church outreach in your church but but but it'll it'll help you connect with the it'll it'll help you connect with the it'll it'll help you connect with the business leaders in your church business leaders in your church business leaders in your church and the business leaders outside of your and the business leaders outside of your and the business leaders outside of your church so guys that was probably way church so guys that was probably way church so guys that was probably way longer than you ever expected when you longer than you ever expected when you longer than you ever expected when you said hey tell us your story but there said hey tell us your story but there said hey tell us your story but there you have it you have it you have it the full meal i will tell you i i now the full meal i will tell you i i now the full meal i will tell you i i now can see the the fingerprints of god you can see the the fingerprints of god you can see the the fingerprints of god you just stitched it all for me right you're just stitched it all for me right you're just stitched it all for me right you're he is using you he is using you he is using you in mighty ways so it's really really in mighty ways so it's really really in mighty ways so it's really really cool thanks for sharing that yeah um and cool thanks for sharing that yeah um and cool thanks for sharing that yeah um and and our listeners are you know mostly and our listeners are you know mostly and our listeners are you know mostly church staff you know people that are church staff you know people that are church staff you know people that are serving in a church currently so

wild fires wild fires and we we've had just some incredibly and we we've had just some incredibly and we we've had just some incredibly devastating fires one of them was called devastating fires one of them was called devastating fires one of them was called the camp fire and it was a town called the camp fire and it was a town called the camp fire and it was a town called paradise and paradise california is a paradise and paradise california is a paradise and paradise california is a little bit east of chico california a little bit east of chico california a little bit east of chico california a college town college town college town paradise was a town of a little over 30 paradise was a town of a little over 30 paradise was a town of a little over 30 000 people and over the course of a few 000 people and over the course of a few 000 people and over the course of a few days uh better than 90 of that community days uh better than 90 of that community days uh better than 90 of that community was absolutely decimated every 90 of the was absolutely decimated every 90 of the was absolutely decimated every 90 of the community lost their houses it was the community lost their houses it was the community lost their houses it was the most uh most uh most uh destructive fire in terms of loss of destructive fire in terms of loss of destructive fire in terms of loss of life uh close to 90 people lost their life uh close to 90 people lost their life uh close to 90 people lost their life in that fire life in that fire life in that fire netflix has done a special on it but netflix has done a special on it but netflix has done a special on it but literally days after the fire and i mean literally days after the fire and i mean literally days after the fire and i mean just a couple of days after the fire we just a couple of days after the fire we just a couple of days after the fire we get a call from get a call from get a call from josh gallagher who's the senior pastor josh gallagher who's the senior pastor josh gallagher who's the senior pastor of a church called paradise cma paradise of a church called paradise cma paradise of a church called paradise cma paradise cma was the largest church in that town cma was the largest church in that town cma was the largest church in that town it had about 3 000 people on a weekend it had about 3 000 people on a weekend it had about 3 000 people on a weekend which is really remarkable that you have which is really remarkable that you have which is really remarkable that you have 10 of the community inside your church 10 of the community inside your church 10 of the community inside your church wow and he said we are devastated uh 90 wow and he said we are devastated uh 90 wow and he said we are devastated uh 90 of our our community is literally gone of our our community is literally gone of our our community is literally gone there is no structure um we have one of there is no structure um we have one of there is no structure um we have one of the only standing buildings in the the only standing buildings in the the only standing buildings in the entire community it's our church but we entire community it's our church but we entire community it's our church but we went from a church of three thousand to went from a church of three thousand to went from a church of three thousand to a church of three or four hundred a church of three or four hundred a church of three or four hundred overnight what do we do can we meet with overnight what do we do can we meet with overnight what do we do can we meet with you you you so they came and met with us and our so they came and met with us and our so they came and met with us and our senior pastor just said you need to senior pastor just said you need to senior pastor just said you need to connect with judd and church goals and connect with judd and church goals and connect with judd and church goals and what they're doing and so i met with what they're doing and so i met with what they're doing and so i met with them and i said let's get your team them and i said let's get your team them and i said let's get your team together and i took them through the together and i took them through the together and i took them through the six-week class that we had in one day six-week class that we had in one day six-week class that we had in one day and i just said here are the things that

and i just said here are the things that and i just said here are the things that you need to do to get back on track uh you need to do to get back on track uh you need to do to get back on track uh and there were 16 staff people in that and there were 16 staff people in that and there were 16 staff people in that meeting and they left and said okay we meeting and they left and said okay we meeting and they left and said okay we think we have we feel like we have a think we have we feel like we have a think we have we feel like we have a mission and we have a direction mission and we have a direction mission and we have a direction i got a call six months later from josh i got a call six months later from josh i got a call six months later from josh and he said can i meet with you and i and he said can i meet with you and i and he said can i meet with you and i said yeah and he came down and goes i said yeah and he came down and goes i said yeah and he came down and goes i just want to let you know we've met our just want to let you know we've met our just want to let you know we've met our 12-month goal 12-month goal 12-month goal in six months in six months in six months the church is revitalized the church is the church is revitalized the church is the church is revitalized the church is strong we are moving and one of the strong we are moving and one of the strong we are moving and one of the things that we had come up with was things that we had come up with was things that we had come up with was if 90 of their community was gone where if 90 of their community was gone where if 90 of their community was gone where did they go they moved about 20 miles to did they go they moved about 20 miles to did they go they moved about 20 miles to that town of chico that town of chico that town of chico and i said if your congregation's moved and i said if your congregation's moved and i said if your congregation's moved to chico you better move them move there to chico you better move them move there to chico you better move them move there with them with them with them and so they started a second sunday and so they started a second sunday and so they started a second sunday morning service in chico and the senior morning service in chico and the senior morning service in chico and the senior pastor was literally driving twice uh pastor was literally driving twice uh pastor was literally driving twice uh he'd start the the service in paradise he'd start the the service in paradise he'd start the the service in paradise complete that one drive 20 minutes to complete that one drive 20 minutes to complete that one drive 20 minutes to the town of chico and give another their the town of chico and give another their the town of chico and give another their second service now second service now second service now but they got completely revitalized but they got completely revitalized but they got completely revitalized interestingly when when covet hit i had interestingly when when covet hit i had interestingly when when covet hit i had josh come on to one of our classes and josh come on to one of our classes and josh come on to one of our classes and tell the people in the class hey tell the people in the class hey tell the people in the class hey you've been through something like covet you've been through something like covet you've been through something like covet what do you think and he literally said what do you think and he literally said what do you think and he literally said guys i don't want to make light of what guys i don't want to make light of what guys i don't want to make light of what you're going through but honestly this you're going through but honestly this you're going through but honestly this is a walk in the park he said we've been is a walk in the park he said we've been is a walk in the park he said we've been through utter destruction and he goes we through utter destruction and he goes we through utter destruction and he goes we feel very qualified to go through covid feel very qualified to go through covid feel very qualified to go through covid now because of of what you guys have now because of of what you guys have now because of of what you guys have done and it literally was the three done and it literally was the three done and it literally was the three steps that we we bring to every single steps that we we bring to every single steps that we we bring to every single church that comes through one is what's church that comes through one is what's church that comes through one is what's our new goal what what can we do in the

our new goal what what can we do in the our new goal what what can we do in the environment that we end what do we want environment that we end what do we want environment that we end what do we want to try and accomplish in the next 30 to try and accomplish in the next 30 to try and accomplish in the next 30 days 60 days 90 days one year days 60 days 90 days one year days 60 days 90 days one year the second do we have the right people the second do we have the right people the second do we have the right people in the right position to accomplish that in the right position to accomplish that in the right position to accomplish that goal goal goal probably mostly volunteer maybe some probably mostly volunteer maybe some probably mostly volunteer maybe some paid staff but are they clearly in the paid staff but are they clearly in the paid staff but are they clearly in the right position and do they know what right position and do they know what right position and do they know what we're supposed to be doing and the third we're supposed to be doing and the third we're supposed to be doing and the third and the most important one is what do i and the most important one is what do i and the most important one is what do i need to do every single day what are the need to do every single day what are the need to do every single day what are the three or four most important things that three or four most important things that three or four most important things that i need to do today that are going to i need to do today that are going to i need to do today that are going to help us reach those goals that we set help us reach those goals that we set help us reach those goals that we set and then we show them how to not only do and then we show them how to not only do and then we show them how to not only do with their staff but to enlarge that to with their staff but to enlarge that to with their staff but to enlarge that to their congregation and more importantly their congregation and more importantly their congregation and more importantly to their community where the community to their community where the community to their community where the community starts to know what the goals of that starts to know what the goals of that starts to know what the goals of that church are church are church are and they literally became a a center in and they literally became a a center in and they literally became a a center in that community for that community for that community for um um um for helping people go through for helping people go through for helping people go through the loss of their their family home the loss of their their family home the loss of their their family home maybe the loss of loved ones maybe the loss of loved ones maybe the loss of loved ones my own nephew lost his house and most my own nephew lost his house and most my own nephew lost his house and most tragic to him was he lost his dog tragic to him was he lost his dog tragic to him was he lost his dog which might not sound like a big thing which might not sound like a big thing which might not sound like a big thing but but but you know to so many people their pets you know to so many people their pets you know to so many people their pets are their their their children are their their their children are their their their children and uh this church really became a and uh this church really became a and uh this church really became a pillar in their community to help the pillar in their community to help the pillar in their community to help the people that were were struggling so yeah people that were were struggling so yeah people that were were struggling so yeah part part part yeah yeah yeah when co just one thing when covenant hit when co just one thing when covenant hit when co just one thing when covenant hit it was deja vu it was church after it was deja vu it was church after it was deja vu it was church after church was calling us going we're church was calling us going we're church was calling us going we're desperate we're devastated desperate we're devastated desperate we're devastated we've been decimated we have nobody we've been decimated we have nobody we've been decimated we have nobody coming on sunday what do we do coming on sunday what do we do coming on sunday what do we do and we just walk them through the same and we just walk them through the same and we just walk them through the same thing over a six-week program so thing over a six-week program so thing over a six-week program so yeah i think the question that i i want

they said you had so much content we're having a hard time implementing we're having a hard time implementing we're having a hard time implementing and assimilating it could you maybe and assimilating church that you have to use to grow your church and we give them a module for each one and we give them a module for each one and we give them a module for each one of those areas and say if you do own another church outside of your own church but i have to tell you most church but i have to tell you most church but i have to tell you most churches are not visitor friendly churches are not visitor friendly churches are not visitor friendly if they're private clubs and entrance to if they're private clubs and entrance to if they're private clubs and entrance to the club is really difficult you show up the club is really difficult you show up the club is really difficult you show up and you're like man i've been in church and you're like man i've been in church and you're like man i've been in church a long long time and i'm here going what a long long time and i'm here going what a long long time and i'm here going what do i do what are they doing here and do i do what are they doing here and do i do what are they doing here and what are their habits and routines and i what are their habits and routines and i what are their habits and routines and i might feel a little uncomfortable well might feel a little uncomfortable well might feel a little uncomfortable well if you've never been in church in your if you've never been in church in your if you've never been in church in your life and you walk into a church for the

life and you walk into a church for the life and you walk into a church for the first time you're like oh my gosh first time you're like oh my gosh first time you're like oh my gosh they're speaking a different language they're speaking a different language they're speaking a different language they're all buddies with each other and they're all buddies with each other and they're all buddies with each other and i'm the odd man out it's really i'm the odd man out it's really i'm the odd man out it's really uncomfortable so month one uncomfortable so month one uncomfortable so month one we show them how to be visitor friendly we show them how to be visitor friendly we show them how to be visitor friendly and get their church ready for new and get their church ready for new and get their church ready for new people to come the second month we start people to come the second month we start people to come the second month we start walking them through how to walking them through how to walking them through how to um um um to start making themselves attractive to to start making themselves attractive to to start making themselves attractive to visitors and how to start thinking about visitors and how to start thinking about visitors and how to start thinking about going out for new visitors how to uh going out for new visitors how to uh going out for new visitors how to uh improve their their preaching and improve their their preaching and improve their their preaching and i think most people that visit church i think most people that visit church i think most people that visit church for the first time if they haven't been for the first time if they haven't been for the first time if they haven't been through our program they would leave through our program they would leave through our program they would leave that church going yeah it's what i that church going yeah it's what i that church going yeah it's what i thought church is all about it's kind of thought church is all about it's kind of thought church is all about it's kind of boring or really boring they said stuff boring or really boring they said stuff boring or really boring they said stuff i didn't even understand and they asked i didn't even understand and they asked i didn't even understand and they asked me for money me for money me for money and that's kind of the most common and that's kind of the most common and that's kind of the most common response that you get a first-time response that you get a first-time response that you get a first-time visitor some somebody that's never been visitor some somebody that's never been visitor some somebody that's never been in church visiting a church for the in church visiting a church for the in church visiting a church for the first time so first month visitor first time so first month visitor first time so first month visitor friendly second second month we want to friendly second second month we want to friendly second second month we want to make sure that they're they're able to make sure that they're they're able to make sure that they're they're able to preach and teach in a way that everybody preach and teach in a way that everybody preach and teach in a way that everybody can understand and goes that was pretty can understand and goes that was pretty can understand and goes that was pretty good i like that third month and this good i like that third month and this good i like that third month and this one's my favorite one's my favorite one's my favorite because of missional um we've teamed up because of missional um we've teamed up because of missional um we've teamed up with you guys and you guys brought with you guys and you guys brought with you guys and you guys brought something to us that we use that's just something to us that we use that's just something to us that we use that's just been phenomenal called the google grant been phenomenal called the google grant been phenomenal called the google grant and so we're we you know signed up for and so we're we you know signed up for and so we're we you know signed up for that and we realized oh my gosh that and we realized oh my gosh that and we realized oh my gosh if we bring every church that we go if we bring every church that we go if we bring every church that we go through the program the grant through the program the grant through the program the grant we're going to have a steady stream of we're going to have a steady stream of we're going to have a steady stream of people coming to these churches there's people coming to these churches there's people coming to these churches there's flap no doubt and my greatest fear guys flap no doubt and my greatest fear guys flap no doubt and my greatest fear guys wasn't that we'd be able to bring new

wasn't that we'd be able to bring new wasn't that we'd be able to bring new people i know that we are we've seen it people i know that we are we've seen it people i know that we are we've seen it for the last year it's absolutely for the last year it's absolutely for the last year it's absolutely guaranteed that we're going to bring guaranteed that we're going to bring guaranteed that we're going to bring people to their church my con my fear people to their church my con my fear people to their church my con my fear and concern is that people walk in and and concern is that people walk in and and concern is that people walk in and walk right out and go yep that's what i walk right out and go yep that's what i walk right out and go yep that's what i thought church was going to be like and thought church was going to be like and thought church was going to be like and they don't stay and so literally from they don't stay and so literally from they don't stay and so literally from months uh 4 through 12 is focusing on months uh 4 through 12 is focusing on months uh 4 through 12 is focusing on the things that you need to do as a the things that you need to do as a the things that you need to do as a church to make sure that every time church to make sure that every time church to make sure that every time somebody walks in they feel cared for somebody walks in they feel cared for somebody walks in they feel cared for they can hear the gospel message but they can hear the gospel message but they can hear the gospel message but more importantly they can understand it more importantly they can understand it more importantly they can understand it and be led to a decision and be led to a decision and be led to a decision for christ in their life that they now for christ in their life that they now for christ in their life that they now make a permanent part of their lives and make a permanent part of their lives and make a permanent part of their lives and they get assimilated into that church they get assimilated into that church they get assimilated into that church where they're making friends and the where they're making friends and the where they're making friends and the church grows uh church grows uh church grows uh so so so so you know it's like it's simple stuff so you know it's like it's simple stuff so you know it's like it's simple stuff but yet it's incredibly difficult to but yet it's incredibly difficult to but yet it's incredibly difficult to think through and actually implement think through and actually implement think through and actually implement right so it's a it's a 12-month program right so it's a it's a 12-month program right so it's a it's a 12-month program um and we we honestly have 36 months of um and we we honestly have 36 months of um and we we honestly have 36 months of content so people can stay with us for content so people can stay with us for content so people can stay with us for for 36 months for 36 months for 36 months that's amazing that's amazing that's amazing that's so cool uh okay so that's so cool uh okay so that's so cool uh okay so um this is probably obvious but i want um this is probably obvious but i want um this is probably obvious but i want to hear it from you so you know pastors to hear it from you so you know pastors to hear it from you so you know pastors are just kind of beat up right you know are just kind of beat up right you know are just kind of beat up right you know kova just pounded them um kova just pounded them um kova just pounded them um you know what are you seeing you know what are you seeing you know what are you seeing as you coach these leaders into this as you coach these leaders into this as you coach these leaders into this kind of this new era of ministry like how how how have you guys been leading how how how have you guys been leading churches is it the same it doesn't churches is it the same it doesn't churches is it the same it doesn't matter what's coming at you a fire or matter what's coming at you a fire or matter what's coming at you a fire or covet it's you implement these same

covet it's you implement these same covet it's you implement these same things or or has there been some twists things or or has there been some twists things or or has there been some twists and turns as you've helped leaders kind and turns as you've helped leaders kind and turns as you've helped leaders kind of cope with with what's been going on of cope with with what's been going on of cope with with what's been going on with kovid with kovid with kovid you know i think in in you know i think in in you know i think in in in most leadership in most leadership in most leadership uh environments one of the questions uh environments one of the questions uh environments one of the questions that you get asked is hey who's that you get asked is hey who's that you get asked is hey who's influenced you influenced you influenced you what leaders have you admired you know what leaders have you admired you know what leaders have you admired you know who you look up to and and um you know who you look up to and and um you know who you look up to and and um you know our senior pastor our senior pastor our senior pastor he he he i think had a a i think had a a i think had a a profound moment in his life when uh his profound moment in his life when uh his profound moment in his life when uh his daughter who was a senior in college at daughter who was a senior in college at daughter who was a senior in college at that point came to him and had to that point came to him and had to that point came to him and had to interview interview interview a person of influence and she said well a person of influence and she said well a person of influence and she said well my dad's a pastor in a big church i my dad's a pastor in a big church i my dad's a pastor in a big church i think he's a person of influence going think he's a person of influence going think he's a person of influence going can i interview him and the school said can i interview him and the school said can i interview him and the school said yeah and she asked him she said dad yeah and she asked him she said dad yeah and she asked him she said dad what's the most important thing that you what's the most important thing that you what's the most important thing that you do do do and he thought about it for a few and he thought about it for a few and he thought about it for a few minutes and he said minutes and he said minutes and he said the number one eye job that i have is the number one eye job that i have is the number one eye job that i have is for me to stay encouraged for me to stay encouraged for me to stay encouraged for me to remain encouraged so that i for me to remain encouraged so that i for me to remain encouraged so that i can encourage other people no matter can encourage other people no matter can encourage other people no matter what they're going through he said what they're going through he said what they're going through he said that's my primary responsibility and we that's my primary responsibility and we that's my primary responsibility and we kind of made that i mean it all hit us kind of made that i mean it all hit us kind of made that i mean it all hit us so profoundly when he said that that was so profoundly when he said that that was so profoundly when he said that that was probably 10 or 15 years ago probably 10 or 15 years ago probably 10 or 15 years ago but but but he literally has lived that his entire he literally has lived that his entire he literally has lived that his entire life and so life and so life and so we've said the same thing to every we've said the same thing to every we've said the same thing to every church leader that comes to us and we church leader that comes to us and we church leader that comes to us and we say our job is to show you how to become say our job is to show you how to become say our job is to show you how to become encouraged how to remain encouraged and encouraged how to remain encouraged and encouraged how to remain encouraged and how to encourage other people so that how to encourage other people so that how to encourage other people so that you can then do what god's calling you you can then do what god's calling you you can then do what god's calling you to do which is really two things how do to do which is really two things how do to do which is really two things how do you encourage other people and how do you encourage other people and how do you encourage other people and how do you support them through no matter what
