over 14 000 people with people to over 14 000 people with people to over 14 000 people with multiple campuses now she has extensive multiple campuses now she has extensive multiple campuses now she has extensive leadership experience in the church and leadership experience in the church and leadership experience in the church and she serves the church today of the she serves the church today of Japanese knees my dad's from Kentucky so Japanese knees my dad's from Kentucky so I've got this mix blend thing happening I've got this mix blend thing happening I've got this mix blend thing happening of being in the South and with a little of being in the South and with a little of being in the South and with a little of a Japanese of words I I cannot of a Japanese of words I I cannot of a Japanese of words I I cannot pronounce all the English words pronounce all the English words pronounce all the English words but I was raised Buddhist but I was raised Buddhist but I was raised Buddhist um I did not go to church growing up in um I did not go to church growing up in um I did not go to church growing up in fact fact fact um I have so many stories that really um I have so many stories that really um I have so many stories that really are heartbreaking of how people that I are heartbreaking of how people that I are heartbreaking of how people that I saw go to church saw go to church saw go to church either either either ignored diminished anything with our ignored diminished anything with our ignored diminished anything with our family or just some little hurtful family or just some little hurtful family or just some little hurtful things and so I grew up seeing church things and so I grew up seeing church things and so I grew up seeing church and church people is something I wanted and church people is something I wanted and church people is something I wanted no part of no part of my dad no part of no part of my dad no part of no part of my dad um was a marine and so he had to go um was a marine and so he had to go um was a marine and so he had to go overseas several times which left my mom overseas several times which left my mom overseas several times which left my mom and my sister and I like a single mom and my sister and I like a single mom and my sister and I like a single mom and there was one summer I was in the and there was one summer I was in the and there was one summer I was in the fourth grade so my sister then was like fourth grade so my sister then was like fourth grade so my sister then was like in the second grade so here you have a in the second grade so here you have a in the second grade so here you have a seven-year-old and a nine eight nine seven-year-old and a nine eight nine seven-year-old and a nine eight nine year old we lived on an acre ish lot and year old we lived on an acre ish lot and year old we lived on an acre ish lot and we had a push mower and it was no we had a push mower and it was no we had a push mower and it was no Landscaping it was just a lot and so the Landscaping it was just a lot and so the Landscaping it was just a lot and so the way we would cut the grass is we would way we would cut the grass is we would way we would cut the grass is we would start the very back of the lot and my start the very back of the lot and my start the very back of the lot and my mom could push the lawnmower this cute mom could push the lawnmower this cute mom could push the lawnmower this cute little Japanese woman little Japanese woman little Japanese woman she'd pushed that mower she'd pushed that mower she'd pushed that mower at least twice she could go one two and

at least twice she could go one two and at least twice she could go one two and then she'd start the third and she'd get then she'd start the third and she'd get then she'd start the third and she'd get tired and my sister and I had those tired and my sister and I had those tired and my sister and I had those little old folding chairs that frayed little old folding chairs that frayed little old folding chairs that frayed and pinched you and we would sit there and pinched you and we would sit there and pinched you and we would sit there and I would get up and I would finish it and I would get up and I would finish it and I would get up and I would finish it and I would then kind of get back and and I would then kind of get back and and I would then kind of get back and then my I would sit down and my sister then my I would sit down and my sister then my I would sit down and my sister would get up and she would do a little would get up and she would do a little would get up and she would do a little bit and then we'd move the chairs back bit and then we'd move the chairs back bit and then we'd move the chairs back and my mom would get up and that was our and my mom would get up and that was our and my mom would get up and that was our rotation like that's we moved the chairs rotation like that's we moved the chairs rotation like that's we moved the chairs back and moved the chairs back and the back and moved the chairs back and the back and moved the chairs back and the reward was always Dairy Queen ice cream reward was always Dairy Queen ice cream reward was always Dairy Queen ice cream so so so um we did as a team but um one of our um we did as a team but um one of our um we did as a team but um one of our neighbors had a riding lawnmower and I neighbors had a riding lawnmower and I neighbors had a riding lawnmower and I remember looking at that riding remember looking at that riding remember looking at that riding lawnmower and thinking how fun would lawnmower and thinking how fun would lawnmower and thinking how fun would that be and I wish we had a riding that be and I wish we had a riding that be and I wish we had a riding lawnmower lawnmower lawnmower and so when my dad got back from serving and so when my dad got back from serving and so when my dad got back from serving in Vietnam in Vietnam in Vietnam never invited us to church but when my never invited us to church but when my never invited us to church but when my dad got back they invited us dad got back they invited us dad got back they invited us so so so um the timing I have no idea but I um the timing I have no idea but I um the timing I have no idea but I remember Saturday morning my mom came to remember Saturday morning my mom came to remember Saturday morning my mom came to my dad said my dad said my dad said um oh uh so and so and she and her voice um oh uh so and so and she and her voice um oh uh so and so and she and her voice invite us to church invite us to church invite us to church hmm and my dad's like hmm and my dad's like hmm and my dad's like did they ever come over and help my did they ever come over and help my did they ever come over and help my girls cut the grass girls cut the grass girls cut the grass while I was gone while I was gone while I was gone because he knew they had a riding because he knew they had a riding because he knew they had a riding lawnmower and she said no and he said lawnmower and she said no and he said lawnmower and she said no and he said they can keep their church and they can keep their church and they can keep their church and as an impressionable nine-year-old

as an impressionable nine-year-old as an impressionable nine-year-old fourth grader that was like fourth grader that was like fourth grader that was like that's right you know I mean I own that that's right you know I mean I own that that's right you know I mean I own that if my dad said it it was happening and if my dad said it it was happening and if my dad said it it was happening and so that was so many of the beginnings of so that was so many of the beginnings of so that was so many of the beginnings of if you said Church to me or anything on if you said Church to me or anything on if you said Church to me or anything on that you know I saw on TV it was to me that you know I saw on TV it was to me that you know I saw on TV it was to me something I either avoided or I saw was something I either avoided or I saw was something I either avoided or I saw was really negative really negative really negative so when I found myself a single mom I so when I found myself a single mom I so when I found myself a single mom I was in my 40s I had two boys they were was in my 40s I had two boys they were was in my 40s I had two boys they were roughly Middle School elementary school roughly Middle School elementary school roughly Middle School elementary school age age age um suffering depression um suffering depression um suffering depression um had one suicide attempt so obviously um had one suicide attempt so obviously um had one suicide attempt so obviously things were happening but on the outside things were happening but on the outside things were happening but on the outside I look great like I was vice president I look great like I was vice president I look great like I was vice president of a commercial lending Bank National of a commercial lending Bank National of a commercial lending Bank National Bank Bank Bank so I was traveling I was lending so I was traveling I was lending so I was traveling I was lending millions of dollars so on the outside millions of dollars so on the outside millions of dollars so on the outside man I had it together man I had it together man I had it together but clearly I didn't and in 40 years no but clearly I didn't and in 40 years no but clearly I didn't and in 40 years no one except for that one family that we one except for that one family that we one except for that one family that we rejected but especially myself as a rejected but especially myself as a rejected but especially myself as a single mom nobody invited me to church single mom nobody invited me to church single mom nobody invited me to church personally not in high school I'm in the personally not in high school I'm in the personally not in high school I'm in the South not in college South not in college South not in college nothing and so now I'm in my 40s and I'm nothing and so now I'm in my 40s and I'm nothing and so now I'm in my 40s and I'm this crazy single mom this crazy single mom this crazy single mom and one of the neighbors and one of the neighbors and one of the neighbors um started just loving on us um started just loving on us um started just loving on us just loving on us being kind to us

just loving on us being kind to us just loving on us being kind to us including my boys including me and it including my boys including me and it including my boys including me and it took two years of my saying no before we took two years of my saying no before we took two years of my saying no before we finally went she would say hey you finally went she would say hey you finally went she would say hey you should come check out church I was like like you know she's coming over I'm like you know she's coming over I'm closing the door and you know God this closing the door and you know God this closing the door and you know God this is what I love I love I love God was is what I love I love I love God was is what I love I love I love God was softening my heart softening my heart softening my heart he was providing the steps he was providing the steps he was providing the steps and and and she my friend her name is Becky I always she my friend her name is Becky I always she my friend her name is Becky I always said I didn't know God but I knew Becky said I didn't know God but I knew Becky said I didn't know God but I knew Becky and between Becky and her family on that and between Becky and her family on that and between Becky and her family on that first time coming to church because they first time coming to church because they first time coming to church because they loved my boys and you know as a single loved my boys and you know as a single loved my boys and you know as a single mom if you love my kids well you're mom if you love my kids well you're mom if you love my kids well you're gonna get my attention gonna get my attention gonna get my attention and so after two years of this and I'm and so after two years of this and I'm and so after two years of this and I'm watching I'm like watching I'm like watching I'm like and now the boys are like we need to go and now the boys are like we need to go and now the boys are like we need to go to church and I'm thinking who are you to church and I'm thinking who are you to church and I'm thinking who are you because Becky had boys and they played because Becky had boys and they played because Becky had boys and they played together and they did fun things and together and they did fun things and together and they did fun things and their Church would invite them and I their Church would invite them and I their Church would invite them and I would look at these outings they'd take would look at these outings they'd take would look at these outings they'd take my boys and never once did I think oh my boys and never once did I think oh my boys and never once did I think oh what nice church people what nice church people what nice church people I would think free Saturday I would think free Saturday I would think free Saturday like you know this was just rescue and like you know this was just rescue and like you know this was just rescue and they never preached at me nothing and I they never preached at me nothing and I they never preached at me nothing and I kept waiting for it but they would kept waiting for it but they would kept waiting for it but they would invite me so that first Sunday I decided invite me so that first Sunday I decided invite me so that first Sunday I decided to go to go to go um I was nervous I honestly thought I um I was nervous I honestly thought I um I was nervous I honestly thought I was going to throw up

was going to throw up was going to throw up because you know walk me into a board because you know walk me into a board because you know walk me into a board room get me on a plane in New York or room get me on a plane in New York or room get me on a plane in New York or California and I'm great you're good California and I'm great you're good California and I'm great you're good Church Church Church because I had pre-decided okay I know because I had pre-decided okay I know because I had pre-decided okay I know I'm not gonna like you I'm not gonna like you I'm not gonna like you and I'm pretty sure you're not gonna and I'm pretty sure you're not gonna and I'm pretty sure you're not gonna like me like me like me and you're gonna see this single mom and you're gonna see this single mom and you're gonna see this single mom walk in and you're gonna start judging walk in and you're gonna start judging walk in and you're gonna start judging and questioning me and I don't need that and questioning me and I don't need that and questioning me and I don't need that in my life yeah frankly so I decided to in my life yeah frankly so I decided to in my life yeah frankly so I decided to go because the boys begged and I just go because the boys begged and I just go because the boys begged and I just need to get Becky off my back need to get Becky off my back need to get Becky off my back you know I just need to go one time and you know I just need to go one time and you know I just need to go one time and be kind and go thanks I went be kind and go thanks I went be kind and go thanks I went don't ask me again and as we're driving don't ask me again and as we're driving don't ask me again and as we're driving into this little tiny church and at that into this little tiny church and at that into this little tiny church and at that time the church was maybe a hundred 140 time the church was maybe a hundred 140 time the church was maybe a hundred 140 people okay people okay people okay I was intimidated like crazy we pulled I was intimidated like crazy we pulled I was intimidated like crazy we pulled in this tiny tiny parking lot and I say in this tiny tiny parking lot and I say in this tiny tiny parking lot and I say to myself Give Me One Reason To Leave to myself Give Me One Reason To Leave to myself Give Me One Reason To Leave just one reason just one reason just one reason just look at me funny or don't look at just look at me funny or don't look at just look at me funny or don't look at me like roll that eye like anything I am me like roll that eye like anything I am me like roll that eye like anything I am looking for a reason I was that girl and looking for a reason I was that girl and looking for a reason I was that girl and so we pulled this parking lot and I'm so we pulled this parking lot and I'm so we pulled this parking lot and I'm thinking oh no place to park I guess we thinking oh no place to park I guess we thinking oh no place to park I guess we have to leave have to leave have to leave and there was this one guy with the vest and there was this one guy with the vest and there was this one guy with the vest on in the parking lot on in the parking lot on in the parking lot as a volunteer and he sees me and he as a volunteer and he sees me and he as a volunteer and he sees me and he smiles any waves at me and I was like ah smiles any waves at me and I was like ah smiles any waves at me and I was like ah great and he's like come this way and I

others and we get caught up in and others and we get caught up in and listen this church that I met Jesus in listen this church that I met Jesus in listen this church that I met Jesus in that was a little bit over a hundred that was a little bit over a hundred that was a little bit over a hundred people people people um grew to over 14 um grew to over 14 um grew to over 14 000 when I left left there in 2014. wow 000 when I left left there in 2014. wow 000 when I left left there in 2014. wow so we grew into this massive so we grew into this massive so we grew into this massive multi-campus Church multi-campus Church multi-campus Church and I understand how Sundays come every and I understand how Sundays come every and I understand how Sundays come every week and I understand it takes bodies week and I understand it takes bodies week and I understand it takes bodies and hands and feet to make things like and hands and feet to make things like and hands and feet to make things like that work but I also saw firsthand the that work but I also saw firsthand the that work but I also saw firsthand the difference between in really caring for difference between in really caring for difference between in really caring for the people caring and seeing the people caring and seeing the people caring and seeing um that the volunteers are not there um that the volunteers are not there um that the volunteers are not there just to further your mission the just to further your mission the just to further your mission the volunteers are the mission yeah volunteers are the mission yeah volunteers are the mission yeah um and when we can really get that in um and when we can really get that in um and when we can really get that in our heads our heads our heads Changes Everything Changes Everything Changes Everything Changes Everything Changes Everything Changes Everything and then I you know because again this and then I you know because again this and then I you know because again this is what God did because I didn't grow up is what God did because I didn't grow up is what God did because I didn't grow up in church and I didn't know the rules in church and I didn't know the rules in church and I didn't know the rules I did I did I did I did all the other things that people I did all the other things that people I did all the other things that people said you couldn't do but I didn't know said you couldn't do but I didn't know said you couldn't do but I didn't know any different and I had a really quick any different and I had a really quick any different and I had a really quick Pastor was like go for it Marianne Pastor was like go for it Marianne Pastor was like go for it Marianne and I tried things and what I learned and I tried things and what I learned and I tried things and what I learned was we have to look at who is directly was we have to look at who is directly was we have to look at who is directly in front of us lean into them give them in front of us lean into them give them in front of us lean into them give them a voice and really go what works for us a voice and really go what works for us a voice and really go what works for us for our DNA for our church for what God for our DNA for our church for what God for our DNA for our church for what God is calling us to do is calling us to do is calling us to do and don't don't be afraid to try things and don't don't be afraid to try things and don't don't be afraid to try things interesting yeah you know when you're interesting yeah you know when you're interesting yeah you know when you're saying that some of the question for you saying that some of the question for you saying that some of the question for you but something just comes to my mind and

but something just comes to my mind and but something just comes to my mind and that is I think often you know we look that is I think often you know we look that is I think often you know we look at ourselves and say oh God gave me this at ourselves and say oh God gave me this at ourselves and say oh God gave me this gift I'm really good at this gift gift I'm really good at this gift gift I'm really good at this gift and if you're on if you're a staff and if you're on if you're a staff and if you're on if you're a staff person and you you're listening to this person and you you're listening to this person and you you're listening to this I think sometimes we forget that our I think sometimes we forget that our I think sometimes we forget that our volunteers aren't people necessarily volunteers aren't people necessarily volunteers aren't people necessarily just people they're people that God gave just people they're people that God gave just people they're people that God gave them a gift and so they're trying to them a gift and so they're trying to them a gift and so they're trying to Steward that well if you don't Steward that well if you don't Steward that well if you don't allowed them to Steward that well you're allowed them to Steward that well you're allowed them to Steward that well you're cutting off cutting off cutting off not only just a person but you're not only just a person but you're not only just a person but you're cutting off God from working through cutting off God from working through cutting off God from working through that person into other lives yeah yeah that person into other lives yeah yeah that person into other lives yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's it where's my dingbell that's it where's my dingbell that's it where's my dingbell I actually used to dingbell in my I actually used to dingbell in my I actually used to dingbell in my Ministry especially with my with my Ministry especially with my with my Ministry especially with my with my leaders and when we would have these leaders and when we would have these leaders and when we would have these moments people would jump up and ding moments people would jump up and ding moments people would jump up and ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding um because we have to really hit it home um because we have to really hit it home um because we have to really hit it home and I believe we should have fun in and I believe we should have fun in and I believe we should have fun in church too by the way so church too by the way so church too by the way so um but I think we are um but I think we are um but I think we are um um um this is hogging this is hogging this is hogging all the good stuff all the good stuff all the good stuff like look I think one of the biggest like look I think one of the biggest like look I think one of the biggest things I talked to a pastor recently and things I talked to a pastor recently and things I talked to a pastor recently and he was asking he was asking he was asking um about you know time management on um about you know time management on um about you know time management on what it really boiled down to was he what it really boiled down to was he what it really boiled down to was he wasn't willing to let go wasn't willing to let go wasn't willing to let go of anything of anything of anything yeah and it either has to be yeah and it either has to be yeah and it either has to be particularly in production perfect or my particularly in production perfect or my particularly in production perfect or my way

people were resenting me because I was people were resenting me because I was putting too much emphasis on the putting too much emphasis on the putting too much emphasis on the production and not enough emphasis on production and not enough emphasis on production and not enough emphasis on the people and I needed to put people the people and I needed to put people the people and I needed to put people before the production and you and what before the production and you and what before the production and you and what you just shared just now I just flashed you just shared just now I just flashed you just shared just now I just flashed back 20 odd years and a moment of back 20 odd years and a moment of back 20 odd years and a moment of conviction where I realized I just conviction where I realized I just conviction where I realized I just wasn't yeah I'm talking about we were a wasn't yeah I'm talking about we were a wasn't yeah I'm talking about we were a portable church for nine ten years you portable church for nine ten years you portable church for nine ten years you want to talk about people showing up at want to talk about people showing up at want to talk about people showing up at odark 30 to unload a trailer and to set odark 30 to unload a trailer and to set odark 30 to unload a trailer and to set up and equipment and to haul out of the up and equipment and to haul out of the up and equipment and to haul out of the stuff and and you know I would like to stuff and and you know I would like to stuff and and you know I would like to think that over the last 20 plus years think that over the last 20 plus years think that over the last 20 plus years I've I've grown into maturity and some I've I've grown into maturity and some I've I've grown into maturity and some awareness and I I lead better but yeah awareness and I I lead better but yeah awareness and I I lead better but yeah those were those were hard it was a hard those were those were hard it was a hard those were those were hard it was a hard lesson for me to learn lesson for me to learn lesson for me to learn um I'm glad that God allowed me to learn um I'm glad that God allowed me to learn um I'm glad that God allowed me to learn it early and boy if we can help other it early and boy if we can help other it early and boy if we can help other leaders learn that same lesson leaders learn that same lesson leaders learn that same lesson a lot easier than I did that would be a lot easier than I did that would be a lot easier than I did that would be that'd be awesome that'd be awesome that'd be awesome so so what are some like of the so so what are some like of the so so what are some like of the misconceptions misconceptions misconceptions that churches or church leaders have on that churches or church leaders have on that churches or church leaders have on how to you know effectively lead or how to you know effectively lead or how to you know effectively lead or manage volunteers what are what are manage volunteers what are what are manage volunteers what are what are mistakes or misconceptions mistakes or misconceptions mistakes or misconceptions um I don't think they think of it they um I don't think they think of it they um I don't think they think of it they may say the words lead volunteers I may say the words lead volunteers I may say the words lead volunteers I think it's more scheduling and managing think it's more scheduling and managing think it's more scheduling and managing and let it go and then with under the pr and let it go and then with under the pr and let it go and then with under the pr under the pretense or the idea or the under the pretense or the idea or the under the pretense or the idea or the hope and desires we're leading a team hope and desires we're leading a team hope and desires we're leading a team um my what I've noticed is that there um my what I've noticed is that there um my what I've noticed is that there really aren't very many real teams out really aren't very many real teams out really aren't very many real teams out there they're just pools of people and there they're just pools of people and there they're just pools of people and when we moved and I started serving at a

when we moved and I started serving at a when we moved and I started serving at a church they're like you you're going to church they're like you you're going to church they're like you you're going to join a team and I'm like okay I'm in and join a team and I'm like okay I'm in and join a team and I'm like okay I'm in and I realized this is not a team this is I realized this is not a team this is I realized this is not a team this is not a team and I um I don't know if you not a team and I um I don't know if you not a team and I um I don't know if you guys are familiar with text in church guys are familiar with text in church guys are familiar with text in church and their engage conference but I did a and their engage conference but I did a and their engage conference but I did a talk on it recently that talked about a talk on it recently that talked about a talk on it recently that talked about a real team versus a pool of people and it real team versus a pool of people and it real team versus a pool of people and it makes a difference and again it's about makes a difference and again it's about makes a difference and again it's about knowing your people and so I think the knowing your people and so I think the knowing your people and so I think the misconception with volunteers is we're misconception with volunteers is we're misconception with volunteers is we're typically looking at a spreadsheet or typically looking at a spreadsheet or typically looking at a spreadsheet or document and we're just trying to fill document and we're just trying to fill document and we're just trying to fill in the the spaces we need someone to in the the spaces we need someone to in the the spaces we need someone to hold a baby and we need someone to run hold a baby and we need someone to run hold a baby and we need someone to run the camera we need five people here and the camera we need five people here and the camera we need five people here and and we and we stop there A lot of times and we and we stop there A lot of times and we and we stop there A lot of times just because like with you Bart you're just because like with you Bart you're just because like with you Bart you're saying that you are having to do all saying that you are having to do all saying that you are having to do all these jobs it blows my mind you know it's like it blows my mind you know it's like that's not fair to you much less the that's not fair to you much less the that's not fair to you much less the people that you are supposed to be people that you are supposed to be people that you are supposed to be pouring into and caring for it's pouring into and caring for it's pouring into and caring for it's impossible you just can't do it it's too impossible you just can't do it it's too impossible you just can't do it it's too many different um directions you're many different um directions you're many different um directions you're going in going in going in so so so um I had to say no to my pastor a lot my um I had to say no to my pastor a lot my um I had to say no to my pastor a lot my job at the time was over volunteers job at the time was over volunteers job at the time was over volunteers anything to do with anything to do with anything to do with hospitality coffee ushers parking we had hospitality coffee ushers parking we had hospitality coffee ushers parking we had over a thousand volunteers over a thousand volunteers over a thousand volunteers and so and so and so um I would have to go to the well um I would have to go to the well um I would have to go to the well whenever there was extra events or whenever there was extra events or whenever there was extra events or things because our team things because our team things because our team they were they were awesome these people

they were they were awesome these people they were they were awesome these people they were crazy I couldn't keep them out they were crazy I couldn't keep them out they were crazy I couldn't keep them out the door so it was my job to be the the door so it was my job to be the the door so it was my job to be the voice for them like I would give them a voice for them like I would give them a voice for them like I would give them a voice and there's a whole thing about voice and there's a whole thing about voice and there's a whole thing about debriefs and do your volunteers have a debriefs and do your volunteers have a debriefs and do your volunteers have a voice voice voice and I had to really know what was going and I had to really know what was going and I had to really know what was going on through their leaders I can't know a on through their leaders I can't know a on through their leaders I can't know a thousand people that I can know 12 thousand people that I can know 12 thousand people that I can know 12 directors and the 12 directors have been directors and the 12 directors have been directors and the 12 directors have been responsible to talk to all their team responsible to talk to all their team responsible to talk to all their team leaders and together we they come to me leaders and together we they come to me leaders and together we they come to me and I'm like okay we have some hard and I'm like okay we have some hard and I'm like okay we have some hard decisions to make and I would say that's decisions to make and I would say that's decisions to make and I would say that's a great idea but I'm going to say no to a great idea but I'm going to say no to a great idea but I'm going to say no to that because we've got this and this and that because we've got this and this and that because we've got this and this and this and and I must protect the people this and and I must protect the people this and and I must protect the people and I was willing to take all the slings and I was willing to take all the slings and I was willing to take all the slings and arrows because it was more important and arrows because it was more important and arrows because it was more important that that that um I was stewarding the people who were um I was stewarding the people who were um I was stewarding the people who were raising their hands and coming in and raising their hands and coming in and raising their hands and coming in and giving their all people like what you giving their all people like what you giving their all people like what you were saying they had jobs that were were saying they had jobs that were were saying they had jobs that were working caring for parents like there's working caring for parents like there's working caring for parents like there's just so many other things happening that just so many other things happening that just so many other things happening that I constantly talked about and shared and I constantly talked about and shared and I constantly talked about and shared and made everyone be aware of so that no one made everyone be aware of so that no one made everyone be aware of so that no one would forget the person standing next to would forget the person standing next to would forget the person standing next to you is a child of God the person you is a child of God the person you is a child of God the person standing next to you that you're serving standing next to you that you're serving standing next to you that you're serving may need to be relieved and you may need may need to be relieved and you may need may need to be relieved and you may need to go over there and pray with them and to go over there and pray with them and to go over there and pray with them and y'all just go to church and not worry y'all just go to church and not worry y'all just go to church and not worry about it God's bigger than you and I about it God's bigger than you and I about it God's bigger than you and I standing here at this church today standing here at this church today standing here at this church today um um um so so give me one takeaway for our so so give me one takeaway for our so so give me one takeaway for our audience audience audience um and some of them are leading a few um and some of them are leading a few um and some of them are leading a few volunteers to some lead a lot of

volunteers to some lead a lot of volunteers to some lead a lot of volunteers give me one take away on what volunteers give me one take away on what volunteers give me one take away on what they should do to help create a I guess they should do to help create a I guess they should do to help create a I guess a culture of not just you know filling a culture of not just you know filling a culture of not just you know filling out the sheet to make sure everybody's out the sheet to make sure everybody's out the sheet to make sure everybody's serving this weekend but you know serving this weekend but you know serving this weekend but you know building a relationship or something building a relationship or something building a relationship or something like that what's the takeaway that they like that what's the takeaway that they like that what's the takeaway that they should do should do should do Ah that's too hard Ah that's too hard Ah that's too hard [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] where do we start give us one I mean where do we start give us one I mean where do we start give us one I mean everyone wants give me the magic pill everyone wants give me the magic pill everyone wants give me the magic pill give me the magic thing give me the magic thing give me the magic thing um I do have maybe it's not the magic um I do have maybe it's not the magic um I do have maybe it's not the magic but a simple thing let's let's do that but a simple thing let's let's do that but a simple thing let's let's do that um when I think back at 200 for me and I um when I think back at 200 for me and I um when I think back at 200 for me and I had to figure out I don't know what I'm had to figure out I don't know what I'm had to figure out I don't know what I'm doing then even back up even before then doing then even back up even before then doing then even back up even before then we were building a new building and we we were building a new building and we we were building a new building and we had had had I I knew I was getting involved in some I I knew I was getting involved in some I I knew I was getting involved in some things things things um with the church with volunteers um with the church with volunteers um with the church with volunteers because our building we were building because our building we were building because our building we were building was almost finished so I was almost finished so I was almost finished so I did then what I would say I did when we did then what I would say I did when we did then what I would say I did when we got to 200 as I looked around the church got to 200 as I looked around the church got to 200 as I looked around the church and I said who are the key volunteers and I said who are the key volunteers and I said who are the key volunteers who are the ones that show up have a who are the ones that show up have a who are the ones that show up have a kind heart eventually we came to two kind heart eventually we came to two kind heart eventually we came to two words are they coachable and are they words are they coachable and are they words are they coachable and are they approachable approachable approachable well they take feedback well they ask well they take feedback well they ask well they take feedback well they ask for feedback and really want it for feedback and really want it for feedback and really want it so I gathered like five people in a room so I gathered like five people in a room so I gathered like five people in a room between one of the services between one of the services between one of the services and I just stood in front of them and and I just stood in front of them and and I just stood in front of them and said said said this isn't my Ministry this isn't just

this isn't my Ministry this isn't just this isn't my Ministry this isn't just my church this is our church my church this is our church my church this is our church and we have a situation or dilemma or a and we have a situation or dilemma or a and we have a situation or dilemma or a roadblock or whatever it may be or a roadblock or whatever it may be or a roadblock or whatever it may be or a season season season what do y'all think what do y'all think what do y'all think and then shut up like and then shut up like and then shut up like get on get in front of a whiteboard get on get in front of a whiteboard get on get in front of a whiteboard get a pad and let them tell you get a pad and let them tell you get a pad and let them tell you now it may take some time and convincing now it may take some time and convincing now it may take some time and convincing by you sitting there not saying anything by you sitting there not saying anything by you sitting there not saying anything for a while for a while for a while because they're used to church staff because they're used to church staff because they're used to church staff people talking to them people talking to them people talking to them and this is not a complaint session and this is not a complaint session and this is not a complaint session this is not that but when you present it this is not that but when you present it this is not that but when you present it in a very mature loving way in a very mature loving way in a very mature loving way every single time I got met with mature every single time I got met with mature every single time I got met with mature loving responses loving responses loving responses every time every time every time and these people now have buy-in you're and these people now have buy-in you're and these people now have buy-in you're hearing things you're hearing the other hearing things you're hearing the other hearing things you're hearing the other perspective and then you're getting the perspective and then you're getting the perspective and then you're getting the solutions that they want to implement solutions that they want to implement solutions that they want to implement and we together we tweak it and we and we together we tweak it and we and we together we tweak it and we constantly look at the on the constantly look at the on the constantly look at the on the battlefield on a Sunday and we look battlefield on a Sunday and we look battlefield on a Sunday and we look across the eyes and we're going we got across the eyes and we're going we got across the eyes and we're going we got this right like this is what we agreed this right like this is what we agreed this right like this is what we agreed on oh we need a debrief so I would just on oh we need a debrief so I would just on oh we need a debrief so I would just say the first thing is to gather your say the first thing is to gather your say the first thing is to gather your one or two or three people whatever and one or two or three people whatever and one or two or three people whatever and get in a room and get serious and say get in a room and get serious and say get in a room and get serious and say and be vulnerable like y'all and be vulnerable like y'all and be vulnerable like y'all in the south this is hard or we're dropping the ball this is hard or we're dropping the ball or are we dropping the ball like did you
