on friday is a virtual uh online on friday is a virtual uh online experience only so they have one that's experience only so they have one that's experience only so they have one that's geared towards families and then geared towards families and then geared towards families and then another one um that's uh going to be another one um that's uh going to be another one um that's uh going to be done for done for done for just like kind of an adult only just like kind of an adult only just like kind of an adult only participation for for good friday so participation for for good friday so participation for for good friday so i think it's really neat that they you i think it's really neat that they you i think it's really neat that they you know that they kind of picked up on that know that they kind of picked up on that know that they kind of picked up on that said we can do good friday said we can do good friday said we can do good friday just online so let's just do that so i just online so let's just do that so i just online so let's just do that so i thought that was kind of neat churches thought that was kind of neat churches thought that was kind of neat churches are really being a lot more innovative are really being a lot more innovative are really being a lot more innovative and a lot more creative and a lot more creative and a lot more creative uh coming out of cova don't you think i uh coming out of cova don't you think i uh coming out of cova don't you think i i know so it's it's been fun to see that i know so it's it's been fun to see that i know so it's it's been fun to see that and that's probably you and that's probably you and that's probably you as you're listening to this and you your as you're listening to this and you your as you're listening to this and you your church has been innovative church has been innovative church has been innovative way to go way to uh shift you know a way to go way to uh shift you know a way to go way to uh shift you know a year ago and then you guys have poured year ago and then you guys have poured year ago and then you guys have poured into it to make it into it to make it into it to make it a meaningful engagement online so you a meaningful engagement online so you a meaningful engagement online so you you know for those churches that that you know for those churches that that you know for those churches that that are meeting in person that's a blessing are meeting in person that's a blessing are meeting in person that's a blessing right right right because not all churches even right now because not all churches even right now because not all churches even right now can't meet in person not all of them can't meet in person not all of them can't meet in person not all of them yeah but everybody can meet online and yeah but everybody can meet online and yeah but everybody can meet online and you guys have done a great job of you guys have done a great job of you guys have done a great job of pouring resources and energy pouring resources and energy pouring resources and energy into and creativity into that yeah i into and creativity into that yeah i into and creativity into that yeah i you know i've got i did a lot of you know i've got i did a lot of you know i've got i did a lot of ministry in canada and i know a lot of ministry in canada and i know a lot of ministry in canada and i know a lot of my friends in canada their my friends in canada their my friends in canada their churches especially in ontario and the churches especially in ontario and the churches especially in ontario and the toronto area they toronto area they toronto area they haven't met i've just talked to another haven't met i've just talked to another haven't met i've just talked to another friend of mine this week who's in the friend of mine this week who's in the friend of mine this week who's in the columbus columbus columbus area and for easter weekend they're area and for easter weekend they're area and for easter weekend they're having having having their first service in person in like 53 their first service in person in like 53 their first service in person in like 53 or 54 weeks like it's just been over a or 54 weeks like it's just been over a or 54 weeks like it's just been over a year and so they're they're meeting year and so they're they're meeting year and so they're they're meeting meeting in person for the first time in meeting in person for the first time in meeting in person for the first time in like they're almost 13 months so like they're almost 13 months so like they're almost 13 months so yeah it's it's uh it's it's a really yeah it's it's uh it's it's a really yeah it's it's uh it's it's a really different different different season now you know we do this podcast

what were your thoughts before we play what were your thoughts before we play the interview what were some of your the interview what were some of your the interview what were some of your thoughts thoughts thoughts well you you hit it right there i i've well you you hit it right there i i've well you you hit it right there i i've had the opportunity and the privilege to had the opportunity and the privilege to had the opportunity and the privilege to work with coker for a number of years work with coker for a number of years work with coker for a number of years now and as jen and i now and as jen and i now and as jen and i became friends and and colleagues became friends and and colleagues became friends and and colleagues working together trying to help coker working together trying to help coker working together trying to help coker reach more people reach more people reach more people what you said is exactly right she's what you said is exactly right she's what you said is exactly right she's sharp she's creative sharp she's creative sharp she's creative and um she brought a lot of energy and and um she brought a lot of energy and and um she brought a lot of energy and here's the thing about it she she worked here's the thing about it she she worked here's the thing about it she she worked in the marketplace before in the marketplace before in the marketplace before stepping into the role um in her current stepping into the role um in her current stepping into the role um in her current role role role and so she she was sharp enough to and so she she was sharp enough to and so she she was sharp enough to understand okay this is how we do things understand okay this is how we do things understand okay this is how we do things but but but uh if we make some twists and changes uh if we make some twists and changes uh if we make some twists and changes and turns and and turns and and turns and and do things differently we're going to and do things differently we're going to and do things differently we're going to have a better outcome and so she wasn't have a better outcome and so she wasn't have a better outcome and so she wasn't afraid afraid afraid to try different things and she's always to try different things and she's always to try different things and she's always thinking about thinking about thinking about uh what can we do next she's always uh what can we do next she's always uh what can we do next she's always asking me questions asking me questions asking me questions about what should we be doing what do about what should we be doing what do about what should we be doing what do you think and so that's a you think and so that's a you think and so that's a that's a sign of a good leader one who that's a sign of a good leader one who that's a sign of a good leader one who isn't afraid to try things isn't afraid to try things isn't afraid to try things but is is taking the advice from people but is is taking the advice from people but is is taking the advice from people all around her all around her all around her and and and leaning into that and she and and and leaning into that and she and and and leaning into that and she was able to and you're gonna hear this was able to and you're gonna hear this was able to and you're gonna hear this through the podcast through the podcast through the podcast uh successfully move her uh leadership uh successfully move her uh leadership uh successfully move her uh leadership team into this thinking and she had a team into this thinking and she had a team into this thinking and she had a lot of support from the leadership team lot of support from the leadership team lot of support from the leadership team because of what she did so uh yeah because of what she did so uh yeah because of what she did so uh yeah it the takeaway is for anybody that's it the takeaway is for anybody that's it the takeaway is for anybody that's creating the communications department creating the communications department creating the communications department brand new to the communications brand new to the communications brand new to the communications department maybe you're an executive or department maybe you're an executive or department maybe you're an executive or a lead pastor and you're thinking about a lead pastor and you're thinking about a lead pastor and you're thinking about how can i you know get my communications how can i you know get my communications how can i you know get my communications department department department moving in a certain direction this is

so um took off from there and did live so um took off from there and did live event production for about 15 years in event production for about 15 years in event production for about 15 years in various capacities and roles various capacities and roles various capacities and roles um from theater productions to corporate um from theater productions to corporate um from theater productions to corporate events events events i was everything from a lighting and i was everything from a lighting and i was everything from a lighting and sound operator sound operator sound operator to a producer of stage manager to a producer of stage manager to a producer of stage manager production supervisor you name it production supervisor you name it production supervisor you name it after kind of wrapping up that little after kind of wrapping up that little after kind of wrapping up that little segment of my life i joined segment of my life i joined segment of my life i joined um a creative firm as the vice president um a creative firm as the vice president um a creative firm as the vice president of marketing and business development of marketing and business development of marketing and business development that creative firm yeah did themed um that creative firm yeah did themed um that creative firm yeah did themed um entertainment fabrication and design entertainment fabrication and design entertainment fabrication and design so bart you're you'll be familiar with so bart you're you'll be familiar with so bart you're you'll be familiar with big techs big techs big techs they actually re yeah yeah they're in they actually re yeah yeah they're in they actually re yeah yeah they're in there in dallas texas they actually there in dallas texas they actually there in dallas texas they actually rebuilt big techs when he burnt down rebuilt big techs when he burnt down rebuilt big techs when he burnt down so it was yeah definitely that was a sad so it was yeah definitely that was a sad so it was yeah definitely that was a sad that was a very sad day in texas when that was a very sad day in texas when that was a very sad day in texas when big tex caught on fire it was a sad day big tex caught on fire it was a sad day big tex caught on fire it was a sad day it was and they kept it was and they kept it was and they kept that guy that i don't know how holly is that guy that i don't know how holly is that guy that i don't know how holly is 60 foot they kept him under wraps in 60 foot they kept him under wraps in 60 foot they kept him under wraps in bernie texas for a year bernie texas for a year bernie texas for a year um yeah you can google the story it was um yeah you can google the story it was um yeah you can google the story it was it was a great one so it was a great one so it was a great one so they redesigned and fabricated him did they redesigned and fabricated him did they redesigned and fabricated him did museum exhibits and all of that museum exhibits and all of that museum exhibits and all of that and while i was working there i was also and while i was working there i was also and while i was working there i was also uh hosting a small group in our home it uh hosting a small group in our home it uh hosting a small group in our home it was multi-generational and it was with was multi-generational and it was with was multi-generational and it was with our neighbors our neighbors our neighbors and our home church at the time with was and our home church at the time with was and our home church at the time with was oak hills texas or oak hills uh oak hills texas or oak hills uh oak hills texas or oak hills uh church here in texas um church here in texas um church here in texas um and during that small group i and during that small group i and during that small group i just got a nudge from god that um

just got a nudge from god that um just got a nudge from god that um i had been giving him pieces of my life i had been giving him pieces of my life i had been giving him pieces of my life and not and not and not all of my life um so i all of my life um so i all of my life um so i i had built a you know like a war room i had built a you know like a war room i had built a you know like a war room like a prayer like a prayer like a prayer war room you know like like the movie war room you know like like the movie war room you know like like the movie and i had gone in there one day and i and i had gone in there one day and i and i had gone in there one day and i was praying and i just felt god just say was praying and i just felt god just say was praying and i just felt god just say like i want like i want like i want i want full surrender like i want full i want full surrender like i want full i want full surrender like i want full surrender of you and i was like all surrender of you and i was like all surrender of you and i was like all right right right i'm i'm all in i don't know what i'm in i'm i'm all in i don't know what i'm in i'm i'm all in i don't know what i'm in for but but i'm in for but but i'm in for but but i'm in and not too long after that a gal from and not too long after that a gal from and not too long after that a gal from the small group came and she spoke uh the small group came and she spoke uh the small group came and she spoke uh jeremiah 1 jeremiah 1 jeremiah 1 7 over me and it says 7 over me and it says 7 over me and it says go where i tell you to go and say what i go where i tell you to go and say what i go where i tell you to go and say what i tell you to say tell you to say tell you to say and so i was like okay well that's my and so i was like okay well that's my and so i was like okay well that's my call that's super unclear but it's my call that's super unclear but it's my call that's super unclear but it's my call call call and i'm just gonna go where god sends me and i'm just gonna go where god sends me and i'm just gonna go where god sends me um um um and i just wanted to extend and i just wanted to extend and i just wanted to extend the gospel message all the time in any the gospel message all the time in any the gospel message all the time in any way he has way he has way he has me to do it you know so um oak hills me to do it you know so um oak hills me to do it you know so um oak hills called and asked if i would called and asked if i would called and asked if i would come on part-time with them um doing come on part-time with them um doing come on part-time with them um doing their social media publishing their social media publishing their social media publishing and so i did and i was you know working and so i did and i was you know working and so i did and i was you know working that along with that along with that along with being the vp of marketing and business being the vp of marketing and business being the vp of marketing and business development um and i just fell in love development um and i just fell in love development um and i just fell in love with it with it with it and so the more posting i was doing the and so the more posting i was doing the and so the more posting i was doing the more more more intertwined i became in the church world intertwined i became in the church world intertwined i became in the church world um the more i um the more i um the more i wanted to do ministry work full-time so wanted to do ministry work full-time so wanted to do ministry work full-time so found the job at coker and uh started in found the job at coker and uh started in found the job at coker and uh started in 2017.

2017. 2017. really yeah wow so your your story really yeah wow so your your story really yeah wow so your your story probably resonates with a lot of our probably resonates with a lot of our probably resonates with a lot of our listeners and that uh like myself we listeners and that uh like myself we listeners and that uh like myself we come from the corporate world come from the corporate world come from the corporate world right uh and bart as well and and yet right uh and bart as well and and yet right uh and bart as well and and yet god has a sense of humor putting us in god has a sense of humor putting us in god has a sense of humor putting us in the spot like what are you the spot like what are you the spot like what are you talking about working for a church i talking about working for a church i talking about working for a church i never thought be right but that never thought be right but that never thought be right but that obedience to that call obedience to that call obedience to that call is is really a a big theme for a lot of is is really a a big theme for a lot of is is really a a big theme for a lot of us so us so us so way to go with way to go with that now way to go with way to go with that now way to go with way to go with that now you bring a lot of different perspective you bring a lot of different perspective you bring a lot of different perspective about how corporate world does about how corporate world does about how corporate world does communications and creativity and all communications and creativity and all communications and creativity and all that kind of stuff that kind of stuff that kind of stuff so what's some of the stuff that you've so what's some of the stuff that you've so what's some of the stuff that you've brought to coker some of the things that brought to coker some of the things that brought to coker some of the things that you oversee to you oversee to you oversee to to let our viewers you're the to let our viewers you're the to let our viewers you're the communication director sure what does communication director sure what does communication director sure what does that mean that mean that mean right right yeah that's that's right right yeah that's that's right right yeah that's that's interesting i think that's why we uh interesting i think that's why we uh interesting i think that's why we uh we jive so well right because having the we jive so well right because having the we jive so well right because having the corporate background corporate background corporate background um you can kind of get things done um you can kind of get things done um you can kind of get things done whereas whereas whereas um i don't know some people in the um i don't know some people in the um i don't know some people in the church world like to do things the way church world like to do things the way church world like to do things the way that they've always that they've always that they've always done them um and i don't know that that done them um and i don't know that that done them um and i don't know that that was necessarily true at coker was necessarily true at coker was necessarily true at coker i sure did run into some of it but not i sure did run into some of it but not i sure did run into some of it but not all of it um they were actually pretty all of it um they were actually pretty all of it um they were actually pretty forward thinking with their branding forward thinking with their branding forward thinking with their branding whenever i whenever i whenever i had started working there um had started working there um had started working there um uh i'm we're within the united methodist uh i'm we're within the united methodist uh i'm we're within the united methodist church so our pastors church so our pastors church so our pastors uh are assigned um different places so uh are assigned um different places so uh are assigned um different places so our senior pastor had just started so our senior pastor had just started so our senior pastor had just started so he's very forward-thinking he's very forward-thinking he's very forward-thinking and had already started to implement and had already started to implement and had already started to implement some things um some things um some things um so once i got on staff the brand like i

so once i got on staff the brand like i so once i got on staff the brand like i said was developed said was developed said was developed i moved forward with uh redesigning the i moved forward with uh redesigning the i moved forward with uh redesigning the bulletin bulletin bulletin and then creating a magazine that told and then creating a magazine that told and then creating a magazine that told the stories of coker kind of the stories of coker kind of the stories of coker kind of developing a communications plan overall developing a communications plan overall developing a communications plan overall so that um so that um so that um we weren't copy and pasting the same we weren't copy and pasting the same we weren't copy and pasting the same content on every channel but using the content on every channel but using the content on every channel but using the channels a little bit more intentionally channels a little bit more intentionally channels a little bit more intentionally we developed a plan for the promotion so we developed a plan for the promotion so we developed a plan for the promotion so when we received promotions from the when we received promotions from the when we received promotions from the different ministries that needed to be different ministries that needed to be different ministries that needed to be sent out um a way to do that sent out um a way to do that sent out um a way to do that and kind of uh give them the the and kind of uh give them the the and kind of uh give them the the platforms that they needed to be able to platforms that they needed to be able to platforms that they needed to be able to share their share their share their their ministry mission and all of that their ministry mission and all of that their ministry mission and all of that kind of stuff so kind of stuff so kind of stuff so so that's kind of what i started doing so that's kind of what i started doing so that's kind of what i started doing at coker at coker at coker and then um one of the big and then um one of the big and then um one of the big glowing neon red flag lights was glowing neon red flag lights was glowing neon red flag lights was um the website that they had at the time um the website that they had at the time um the website that they had at the time um it wasn't built on a wordpress um it wasn't built on a wordpress um it wasn't built on a wordpress platform and that was in platform and that was in platform and that was in you know 2017 2018 you know 2017 2018 you know 2017 2018 when i felt like all of them should be when i felt like all of them should be when i felt like all of them should be that a communications director should that a communications director should that a communications director should definitely be able to get in there and definitely be able to get in there and definitely be able to get in there and update the content pretty easily update the content pretty easily update the content pretty easily and that was not the case um and that was not the case um and that was not the case um i mistakenly thought that it was my my i mistakenly thought that it was my my i mistakenly thought that it was my my predecessor that had predecessor that had predecessor that had um directed the web company um directed the web company um directed the web company incorrectly so i went back to the same incorrectly so i went back to the same incorrectly so i went back to the same web company and said hey let's go ahead web company and said hey let's go ahead web company and said hey let's go ahead let's rebuild this let's do it on a let's rebuild this let's do it on a let's rebuild this let's do it on a wordpress platform let's get this going wordpress platform let's get this going wordpress platform let's get this going and the guy unfortunately was um

and the guy unfortunately was um and the guy unfortunately was um non-responsive i mean had had drawn up non-responsive i mean had had drawn up non-responsive i mean had had drawn up this whole contract and this plan and this whole contract and this plan and this whole contract and this plan and didn't move forward with it didn't move forward with it didn't move forward with it and it just amazed me i ran into that and it just amazed me i ran into that and it just amazed me i ran into that with a couple of vendors with a couple of vendors with a couple of vendors there in my early church days and i and there in my early church days and i and there in my early church days and i and i remember being in prayer and being i remember being in prayer and being i remember being in prayer and being like god i don't understand like like god i don't understand like like god i don't understand like do they assume churches aren't going to do they assume churches aren't going to do they assume churches aren't going to pay them or or like pay them or or like pay them or or like are they not kingdom minded like what is are they not kingdom minded like what is are they not kingdom minded like what is happening why can't i happening why can't i happening why can't i why can't i make things move forward why can't i make things move forward why can't i make things move forward this is very simple it's a website this is very simple it's a website this is very simple it's a website um and i think along that time was when um and i think along that time was when um and i think along that time was when when we connected when we connected when we connected you had come into san antonio to do um you had come into san antonio to do um you had come into san antonio to do um but church analysis on the the various but church analysis on the the various but church analysis on the the various churches here and the free analysis churches here and the free analysis churches here and the free analysis and to show us um a little bit more and to show us um a little bit more and to show us um a little bit more about how we could about how we could about how we could use our website not as a static um use our website not as a static um use our website not as a static um put it up there and let it look pretty put it up there and let it look pretty put it up there and let it look pretty and let people come to it and find and let people come to it and find and let people come to it and find it but actually let the website reach it but actually let the website reach it but actually let the website reach out for us out for us out for us and so that was where the church growth and so that was where the church growth and so that was where the church growth strategy came in with strategy came in with strategy came in with with that website so that's that's what with that website so that's that's what with that website so that's that's what we started doing too whenever i we started doing too whenever i we started doing too whenever i started there at coker yeah you guys started there at coker yeah you guys started there at coker yeah you guys have been have been have been uh really really good and consistent on uh really really good and consistent on uh really really good and consistent on and you said this earlier about like and you said this earlier about like and you said this earlier about like sharing stories you using the the sharing stories you using the the sharing stories you using the the changed lives of people that go to coker changed lives of people that go to coker changed lives of people that go to coker and what god's doing through all that and what god's doing through all that and what god's doing through all that and then getting that on on the and then getting that on on the and then getting that on on the different platforms different platforms different platforms um is that is uh is that something that um is that is uh is that something that um is that is uh is that something that you you you you know you have chosen to go with you know you have chosen to go with you know you have chosen to go with these different like you guys use the these different like you guys use the these different like you guys use the the google ad grant and you're using the google ad grant and you're using the google ad grant and you're using facebook and display

facebook and display facebook and display and you're using all these different and you're using all these different and you're using all these different different tools to reach people different tools to reach people different tools to reach people what's the like is how did you get what's the like is how did you get what's the like is how did you get leadership on board with something like leadership on board with something like leadership on board with something like that that that um that's funny yeah um i just did it no i'm just i just i just i just did it no i'm just i just i just did it and asked for permission later did it and asked for permission later did it and asked for permission later no um that's not true uh so no um that's not true uh so no um that's not true uh so when i started i had a communications when i started i had a communications when i started i had a communications committee committee committee and and i thought that is not going to and and i thought that is not going to and and i thought that is not going to go well go well go well i do not want these people collaborating i do not want these people collaborating i do not want these people collaborating and then sending me and then sending me and then sending me all of these things to do but that's not all of these things to do but that's not all of these things to do but that's not what they were there what they were there what they were there for um they were very knowledgeable for um they were very knowledgeable for um they were very knowledgeable in in the world of communications many in in the world of communications many in in the world of communications many of them had um of them had um of them had um worked in advertising and media and worked in advertising and media and worked in advertising and media and publishing firms in the past and so publishing firms in the past and so publishing firms in the past and so um so that was good and i remember one um so that was good and i remember one um so that was good and i remember one of the first things of the first things of the first things uh they told me was they looked at my uh they told me was they looked at my uh they told me was they looked at my budget for the year and they budget for the year and they budget for the year and they and and there was a line item in there and and there was a line item in there and and there was a line item in there for for for advertising in the express newspaper and advertising in the express newspaper and advertising in the express newspaper and this was in 2017 this was in 2017 this was in 2017 and i was like no like nobody gets the and i was like no like nobody gets the and i was like no like nobody gets the express newspaper anymore we're just express newspaper anymore we're just express newspaper anymore we're just gonna do all this through social social gonna do all this through social social gonna do all this through social social super cheap and it has a big reach like super cheap and it has a big reach like super cheap and it has a big reach like this is crazy take this out of my budget this is crazy take this out of my budget this is crazy take this out of my budget and they said no you and they said no you and they said no you leave it and i was like okay and they leave it and i was like okay and they leave it and i was like okay and they were like we don't care if you use it were like we don't care if you use it were like we don't care if you use it for for for newspaper ads but leave that money in newspaper ads but leave that money in newspaper ads but leave that money in there because you don't want to lose there because you don't want to lose there because you don't want to lose it'll be hard to get it back in and i it'll be hard to get it back in and i it'll be hard to get it back in and i said okay fine said okay fine said okay fine so because i had that flexibility

so because i had that flexibility so because i had that flexibility right there in the budget i could get right there in the budget i could get right there in the budget i could get super creative and because super creative and because super creative and because you know because google ad grants and you know because google ad grants and you know because google ad grants and google display networks google display networks google display networks and social media wasn't anything the and social media wasn't anything the and social media wasn't anything the church had necessarily ever done church had necessarily ever done church had necessarily ever done it didn't disrupt anybody's workflow for it didn't disrupt anybody's workflow for it didn't disrupt anybody's workflow for us to add it in us to add it in us to add it in i think where we run into um needing to i think where we run into um needing to i think where we run into um needing to uh what's the word like change uh what's the word like change uh what's the word like change management like when we need to management like when we need to management like when we need to help guide the culture and when we run help guide the culture and when we run help guide the culture and when we run into tension there is when we into tension there is when we into tension there is when we actually go to somebody and say hey i'm actually go to somebody and say hey i'm actually go to somebody and say hey i'm gonna need you to do your job slightly gonna need you to do your job slightly gonna need you to do your job slightly different different different in the name of church growth and then in the name of church growth and then in the name of church growth and then they they start to feel they they start to feel they they start to feel um uneasy because they're used to doing um uneasy because they're used to doing um uneasy because they're used to doing it a certain way it's worked it a certain way it's worked it a certain way it's worked um that kind of thing but this was all um that kind of thing but this was all um that kind of thing but this was all so new so new so new that when you presented it jason when that when you presented it jason when that when you presented it jason when you presented it to me you presented it to me you presented it to me it was so common sense it would be silly it was so common sense it would be silly it was so common sense it would be silly not to do it not to do it not to do it and then when i presented it to my and then when i presented it to my and then when i presented it to my leadership it was the same thing they leadership it was the same thing they leadership it was the same thing they were like yeah go were like yeah go were like yeah go for it sounds like you've got some great for it sounds like you've got some great for it sounds like you've got some great experts on board you know guiding you experts on board you know guiding you experts on board you know guiding you so while i would like to take credit for so while i would like to take credit for so while i would like to take credit for being all knowing about the google ad being all knowing about the google ad being all knowing about the google ad networks networks networks you know seo google grant processes and you know seo google grant processes and you know seo google grant processes and all that i had no idea i knew google all that i had no idea i knew google all that i had no idea i knew google grants were out there grants were out there grants were out there and that they offered money to and that they offered money to and that they offered money to non-profits but the the idea of applying non-profits but the the idea of applying non-profits but the the idea of applying for those was super overwhelming for those was super overwhelming for those was super overwhelming especially especially especially with trying to fly the airplane and with trying to fly the airplane and with trying to fly the airplane and build that at the same build that at the same build that at the same time and i use that you know time and i use that you know time and i use that you know hypothetically like you know by

that what you're doing in your role that what you're doing in your role today is probably a bit different than today is probably a bit different than today is probably a bit different than maybe what you are hired to do four maybe what you are hired to do four maybe what you are hired to do four years ago years ago years ago um right can you just give us a little um right can you just give us a little um right can you just give us a little bit of an overview what was the church bit of an overview what was the church bit of an overview what was the church like when you came in what were sort of like when you came in what were sort of like when you came in what were sort of the the the the day-to-day role and expectations the day-to-day role and expectations the day-to-day role and expectations that you had and that you had and that you had and how was that sort of morphed over the how was that sort of morphed over the how was that sort of morphed over the course of the last few years and most course of the last few years and most course of the last few years and most specifically if there's anything that's specifically if there's anything that's specifically if there's anything that's kind of changed in the last year with kind of changed in the last year with kind of changed in the last year with covid and covid and covid and and just things that might have have and just things that might have have and just things that might have have forced some forced some forced some change in the context of your role in change in the context of your role in change in the context of your role in what you're doing just kind of what you're doing just kind of what you're doing just kind of unravel that for us a little bit sure unravel that for us a little bit sure unravel that for us a little bit sure okay okay okay so when i was hired on um so when i was hired on um so when i was hired on um again i was hired on and i and i started again i was hired on and i and i started again i was hired on and i and i started just kind of updating all the things just kind of updating all the things just kind of updating all the things that were the common sense updates right that were the common sense updates right that were the common sense updates right the website the the newsletter the website the the newsletter the website the the newsletter um taking what they currently had and um taking what they currently had and um taking what they currently had and making it not look like a making it not look like a making it not look like a word document newsletter and making it word document newsletter and making it word document newsletter and making it into a magazine into a magazine into a magazine you know the the bulletins and that kind you know the the bulletins and that kind you know the the bulletins and that kind of thing um of thing um of thing um and then the the process and then the the process and then the the process at the time their again their previous at the time their again their previous at the time their again their previous uh communications director uh communications director uh communications director was one to take all requests and publish was one to take all requests and publish was one to take all requests and publish all requests and i came from the all requests and i came from the all requests and i came from the corporate world where i corporate world where i corporate world where i led you know teams that would either led you know teams that would either led you know teams that would either design and build design and build design and build um you know theme fabrication or museum um you know theme fabrication or museum um you know theme fabrication or museum exhibits or exhibits or exhibits or led teams that would produce corporate led teams that would produce corporate led teams that would produce corporate events events events so to take these requests kind of like a so to take these requests kind of like a so to take these requests kind of like a fast food order system wasn't working fast food order system wasn't working fast food order system wasn't working for me and so for me and so for me and so we started changing the culture a little

we started changing the culture a little we started changing the culture a little bit like bit like bit like like let me help you promote like let me help you promote like let me help you promote these things in the platforms that these things in the platforms that these things in the platforms that that make the most sense for the that make the most sense for the that make the most sense for the audience you're trying to reach it audience you're trying to reach it audience you're trying to reach it doesn't make the most sense for you to doesn't make the most sense for you to doesn't make the most sense for you to put this up on a digital sign put this up on a digital sign put this up on a digital sign for people to drive by when your for people to drive by when your for people to drive by when your audience is not physically driving by audience is not physically driving by audience is not physically driving by the church the church the church so the demographic at the church at the so the demographic at the church at the so the demographic at the church at the time um time um time um was average age of 65 and over um was average age of 65 and over um was average age of 65 and over um primarily white um and primarily white um and primarily white um and our new pastor was brought in because he our new pastor was brought in because he our new pastor was brought in because he was a church planter was a church planter was a church planter um in the past and so church growth is um in the past and so church growth is um in the past and so church growth is definitely in his repertoire um we had definitely in his repertoire um we had definitely in his repertoire um we had also brought in also brought in also brought in um a pastor that preaches in spanish um a pastor that preaches in spanish um a pastor that preaches in spanish because because because um in san antonio texas we are um in san antonio texas we are um in san antonio texas we are just quite frankly known as the big just quite frankly known as the big just quite frankly known as the big white church white church white church right and so and we're in the middle are right and so and we're in the middle are right and so and we're in the middle are the demographics around our church do the demographics around our church do the demographics around our church do not reflect the demographics you see in not reflect the demographics you see in not reflect the demographics you see in the church the church the church so we knew we had to do some outreach so we knew we had to do some outreach so we knew we had to do some outreach there too there too there too um in order to grow the church so we um in order to grow the church so we um in order to grow the church so we started started started um an espanol service um um an espanol service um um an espanol service um started reaching out to the local area started reaching out to the local area started reaching out to the local area started trying to do some church growth started trying to do some church growth started trying to do some church growth so um my so um my so um my role has evolved especially over um role has evolved especially over um role has evolved especially over um over covid um let's see so over covid um let's see so over covid um let's see so our story isn't unlike that of many our story isn't unlike that of many our story isn't unlike that of many churches right churches right churches right coveted hits and all of a sudden we're

coveted hits and all of a sudden we're coveted hits and all of a sudden we're taking everything that we've got in taking everything that we've got in taking everything that we've got in person and putting it online person and putting it online person and putting it online thankfully we already had our live thankfully we already had our live thankfully we already had our live stream presents stream presents stream presents um going so it was more of trying to um going so it was more of trying to um going so it was more of trying to get all of the small groups and the get all of the small groups and the get all of the small groups and the classes that wanted to continue to meet classes that wanted to continue to meet classes that wanted to continue to meet through covid through covid through covid um on zoom and there was um definitely um on zoom and there was um definitely um on zoom and there was um definitely some some circus acts there um i some some circus acts there um i some some circus acts there um i remember the first the very first week remember the first the very first week remember the first the very first week um i was trying to share zoom logins um i was trying to share zoom logins um i was trying to share zoom logins sorry if anybody from zoom is listening sorry if anybody from zoom is listening sorry if anybody from zoom is listening but i was trying to share zoom logins but i was trying to share zoom logins but i was trying to share zoom logins you know because we thought we're only you know because we thought we're only you know because we thought we're only in this for two weeks right so in this for two weeks right so in this for two weeks right so so we don't really need all these logins so we don't really need all these logins so we don't really need all these logins and um and um and um and there was a youth class that was and there was a youth class that was and there was a youth class that was meeting at the same time as the main meeting at the same time as the main meeting at the same time as the main pastors class and so pastors class and so pastors class and so they tried to log in and kick the main they tried to log in and kick the main they tried to log in and kick the main pastor out of his class and it was just pastor out of his class and it was just pastor out of his class and it was just kind of a kind of a kind of a circus and you know we're all we're all circus and you know we're all we're all circus and you know we're all we're all texting behind the scenes trying to get texting behind the scenes trying to get texting behind the scenes trying to get it all it all it all up to date anyway everybody has their up to date anyway everybody has their up to date anyway everybody has their own logins now um so we run those own logins now um so we run those own logins now um so we run those classes uh legitimately classes uh legitimately classes uh legitimately um so so it was kind of a scramble um so so it was kind of a scramble um so so it was kind of a scramble what we found was what we found was what we found was you know our online presence we've been you know our online presence we've been you know our online presence we've been intentional about working intentional about working intentional about working on that since we built the website in on that since we built the website in on that since we built the website in 2017-2018 2017-2018 2017-2018 so when covet hit and people were either so when covet hit and people were either so when covet hit and people were either discouraged and trying to find a church discouraged and trying to find a church discouraged and trying to find a church or their church home or their church home or their church home wasn't able to live stream online wasn't able to live stream online wasn't able to live stream online um they came to coker and so um they came to coker and so um they came to coker and so where we were worshiping 800 on the where we were worshiping 800 on the where we were worshiping 800 on the weekends

weekends weekends now we were i mean i remember talking now we were i mean i remember talking now we were i mean i remember talking with you jason one day and going there with you jason one day and going there with you jason one day and going there these numbers are crazy like it is these numbers are crazy like it is these numbers are crazy like it is double triple what we saw in person double triple what we saw in person double triple what we saw in person and they're online and i have no idea and they're online and i have no idea and they're online and i have no idea how to know who these people how to know who these people how to know who these people are so that was something that i was are so that was something that i was are so that was something that i was going back and forth with leadership on going back and forth with leadership on going back and forth with leadership on uh we developed like a registration page uh we developed like a registration page uh we developed like a registration page which is it's fine i mean it people do which is it's fine i mean it people do which is it's fine i mean it people do register on it if they want to be seen register on it if they want to be seen register on it if they want to be seen and known not and known not and known not it's maybe 200 a weekend that will it's maybe 200 a weekend that will it's maybe 200 a weekend that will actually fill it out um actually fill it out um actually fill it out um we just we worked with uh we just we worked with uh we just we worked with uh the story brand to develop a narrative the story brand to develop a narrative the story brand to develop a narrative for the church we we looked at for the church we we looked at for the church we we looked at the thing that that coker does extremely the thing that that coker does extremely the thing that that coker does extremely well and always has since well and always has since well and always has since it was established in the mid-1800s was it was established in the mid-1800s was it was established in the mid-1800s was uh uh uh is community really they they do an is community really they they do an is community really they they do an amazing job of community we amazing job of community we amazing job of community we my family and i visited another church my family and i visited another church my family and i visited another church this past weekend this past weekend this past weekend and my daughter looked at my husband and and my daughter looked at my husband and and my daughter looked at my husband and she said no this church was nice but she said no this church was nice but she said no this church was nice but um i'm not known here and i'm known at um i'm not known here and i'm known at um i'm not known here and i'm known at coker and coker and coker and and you will be so if you want to blend and you will be so if you want to blend and you will be so if you want to blend in don't come to coker because they will in don't come to coker because they will in don't come to coker because they will know you know you know you they they will say they will greet you they they will say they will greet you they they will say they will greet you from the the from the the from the the drive-in they will know who you are when drive-in they will know who you are when drive-in they will know who you are when you leave you leave you leave they'll talk about you in good ways they'll talk about you in good ways they'll talk about you in good ways they'll encourage you to come back they'll encourage you to come back they'll encourage you to come back um we encourage open conversations um um we encourage open conversations um um we encourage open conversations um there's the rule that you enter the there's the rule that you enter the there's the rule that you enter the conversation leave the conversation conversation leave the conversation conversation leave the conversation in love of one another but the stuff in in love of one another but the stuff in in love of one another but the stuff in the middle gospel the middle gospel the middle gospel politics whatever talked about in a safe
