engage with some of the visual and engage with some of the visual and engage with some of the visual content you're putting out because content you're putting out because content you're putting out because emotions and memories people people emotions and memories people people emotions and memories people people connect to that uh so that's a bit of a connect to that uh so that's a bit of a connect to that uh so that's a bit of a little Insider my brain of how I try to little Insider my brain of how I try to little Insider my brain of how I try to edit it it usually doesn't exactly edit it it usually doesn't exactly edit it it usually doesn't exactly represent what probably it looked like represent what probably it looked like represent what probably it looked like in the moment but I try to represent the in the moment but I try to represent the in the moment but I try to represent the emotion of the moment all right and emotion of the moment all right and emotion of the moment all right and that's so funny because I have used that that's so funny because I have used that that's so funny because I have used that exact line with our team when we color exact line with our team when we color exact line with our team when we color grade I have said exactly we're not grade I have said exactly we're not grade I have said exactly we're not trying to replicate what it looks like trying to replicate what it looks like trying to replicate what it looks like we're trying to replicate what it felt we're trying to replicate what it felt we're trying to replicate what it felt like and I actually think that's a more like and I actually think that's a more like and I actually think that's a more authentic way of working with color and authentic way of working with color and authentic way of working with color and working with life and shaping uh light working with life and shaping uh light working with life and shaping uh light and shaping it because everyone sees and shaping it because everyone sees and shaping it because everyone sees differently I don't know if you've ever differently I don't know if you've ever differently I don't know if you've ever done this thought exercise but sometimes done this thought exercise but sometimes done this thought exercise but sometimes I wonder like what would it be like if I wonder like what would it be like if I wonder whether you're you're color blind or whether you're you're color blind or whether you're you're color blind or whether just The receptors are different like is just The receptors are different like is just The receptors are different like is the green I see the same green that the green I see the same green that the green I see the same green that alexes maybe maybe not but the feeling alexes maybe maybe not but the feeling alexes maybe maybe not but the feeling of a place is something that's of a place is something that's of a place is something that's universally shared or more easily universally shared or more easily universally shared or more easily universally shared and so I I I've run universally shared and so I I I've run universally shared and so I I I've run into some folks replicate it exactly how I saw it one your memory is corrupt you saw it one your memory is corrupt you saw it one your memory is corrupt you don't remember how you saw it and two don't remember how looked like to that end can you tell us looked like to that end can you tell us just briefly about this church cuz I just briefly about this church cuz I just briefly about this church cuz I think this was you visiting this church think this was you visiting this church think this was you visiting this church for the very first time um paint paint for the very first time um paint paint for the very first time um paint paint the scene of like what where this church the scene of like what where this church the scene of like what where this church was kind of meeting um what their stage was kind of meeting um what their stage was kind of meeting um what their stage and Lobby and kind of setup was like and Lobby and kind of setup was like and Lobby and kind of setup was like yeah so this church in particular um yeah so this church in particular um yeah so this church in particular um when you walked into the auditorium it's when you walked into the auditorium it's when you walked into the auditorium it's pretty dark it's it's a gymnasium that pretty dark it's it's a gymnasium that pretty dark it's it's a gymnasium that has been uh fitted into doubling as a has been uh fitted into doubling as a has been uh fitted into doubling as a Auditorium I think what do they call Auditorium I think what do they call Auditorium I think what do they call they a aium I think there's an actual they a aium I think there's an actual they a aium I think there's an actual word that gymatorium I think that's what word that gymatorium I think that's what word that gymatorium I think that's what it is so there's a word it seems like it is so there's a word it seems like it is so there's a word it seems like that's what it was uh converted into that's what it was uh converted into that's what it was uh converted into into um for this congregation to meet in into um for this congregation to meet in into um for this congregation to meet in and so they had a little stage up front and so they had a little stage up front and so they had a little stage up front and the lighting um was very it was and the lighting um was very it was and the lighting um was very it was constant through the entire worship set constant through the entire worship set constant through the entire worship set they didn't have any sort of um they didn't have any sort of um they didn't have any sort of um additional lighting Beyond uh some floor additional lighting Beyond uh some floor additional lighting Beyond uh some floor lights pointing at the backdrop um they lights pointing at the backdrop um they lights pointing at the backdrop um they were just some blue colored lights that were just some blue colored lights that were just some blue colored lights that stayed blue the entire time and then stayed blue the entire time and then stayed blue the entire time and then they had they had they had some I think the proper can lights I some I think the proper can lights I some I think the proper can lights I think above the stage that's where you think above the stage that's where you think above the stage that's where you get some of these warm really yellowish get some of these warm really yellowish get some of these warm really yellowish tones that kind of get introduced and tones that kind of get introduced and tones that kind of get introduced and can distort some of the skin tones um can distort some of the skin tones um can distort some of the skin tones um so that's what I'm working with within so that's what I'm working with within so that's what I'm working with within the auditorium and I'm going to flip the auditorium and I'm going to flip the auditorium and I'm going to flip over real quick so you can see this is over real quick so you can see this is over real quick so you can see this is the lobby um and the lobby was pretty uh the lobby um and the lobby was pretty uh the lobby um and the lobby was pretty uh small it was actually pretty contained small it was actually pretty contained small it was actually pretty contained uh I'd love to throw out a measurement uh I'd love to throw out a measurement uh I'd love to throw out a measurement but I'm not good at this I don't know but I'm not good at this I don't know but I'm not good at this I don't know maybe 50 feet by 80 feet um it's not too

maybe 50 feet by 80 feet um it's not too maybe 50 feet by 80 feet um it's not too large but it was packed people were large but it was packed people were large but it was packed people were really enjoying spending time hanging really enjoying spending time hanging really enjoying spending time hanging out um getting to connect uh in the out um getting to connect uh in the out um getting to connect uh in the lobby um but you'll see there's a lot of lobby um but you'll see there's a lot of lobby um but you'll see there's a lot of yellow in this as well there were yellow yellow in this as well there were yellow yellow in this as well there were yellow walls all of the natural light was walls all of the natural light was walls all of the natural light was coming from One Direction the front coming from One Direction the front coming from One Direction the front doors um which is coming from behind me doors um which is coming from behind me doors um which is coming from behind me if you see in this image which is a if you see in this image which is a if you see in this image which is a strategy to use when you're shooting in strategy to use when you're shooting in strategy to use when you're shooting in these situations look for where the these situations look for where the these situations look for where the natural light is coming for coming from natural light is coming for coming from natural light is coming for coming from and if you can figure out how to and if you can figure out how to and if you can figure out how to position yourself between that natural position yourself between that natural position yourself between that natural light and your subject you're going to light and your subject you're going to light and your subject you're going to get uh it's going to be easier to edit get uh it's going to be easier to edit get uh it's going to be easier to edit and post it's going to be easier to get and post it's going to be easier to get and post it's going to be easier to get a pleasing image if you're able to a pleasing image if you're able to a pleasing image if you're able to position yourself in that way um so yeah position yourself in that way um so yeah position yourself in that way um so yeah tight shooting space uh yellow walls and tight shooting space uh yellow walls and tight shooting space uh yellow walls and the classrooms they had where maybe some the classrooms they had where maybe some the classrooms they had where maybe some students were at very similar situation students were at very similar situation students were at very similar situation kind of smaller um not a lot of like uh kind of smaller um not a lot of like uh kind of smaller um not a lot of like uh what you would consider high quality what you would consider high quality what you would consider high quality lighting for photography or video uh in lighting for photography or video uh in lighting for photography or video uh in those situations this is perfect yes those situations this is perfect yes those situations this is perfect yes this is probably what a lot of people this is probably what a lot of people this is probably what a lot of people are dealing with yes meeting in a school are dealing with yes meeting in a school are dealing with yes meeting in a school right like I think previously we we've right like I think previously we we've right like I think previously we we've had you on and we were looking at this had you on and we were looking at this had you on and we were looking at this really good setup and I think it's easy really good setup and I think it's easy really good setup and I think it's easy to look at that and think to yourself ah to look at that and think to yourself ah to look at that and think to yourself ah like anyone can make a photo look great like anyone can make a photo look great like anyone can make a photo look great there and the skills that we're about to there and the skills that we're about to there and the skills that we're about to talk through and you're about to learn talk through and you're about to learn talk through and you're about to learn and see being deployed is how you can and see being deployed is how you can and see being deployed is how you can take really any church setup and make it take really any church setup and make it take really any church setup and make it look awesome and and put the people on

so if there were a lighting technician so if there were a lighting technician that I could talk to and be like what that I could talk to and be like what that I could talk to and be like what what are your stage lights kind of set what are your stage lights kind of set what are your stage lights kind of set to and I would actually I would set it to and I would actually I would set it to and I would actually I would set it in camera um so when I would shoot in camera um so when I would shoot in camera um so when I would shoot Pastor Craig on uh when he was recording Pastor Craig on uh when he was recording Pastor Craig on uh when he was recording or when he was on stage uh we typically or when he was on stage uh we typically or when he was on stage uh we typically shot around 5400 Kelvin so I would I had shot around 5400 Kelvin so I would I had shot around 5400 Kelvin so I would I had it pre-programmed in my camera at least it pre-programmed in my camera at least it pre-programmed in my camera at least that's what it looked good on my camera that's what it looked good on my camera that's what it looked good on my camera I think technically they had it set like I think technically they had it set like I think technically they had it set like 5,500 but I shot for 54 but um it's so I 5,500 but I shot for 54 but um it's so I 5,500 but I shot for 54 but um it's so I would set it so it is consistent uh would set it so it is consistent uh would set it so it is consistent uh because sometimes you have moving because sometimes you have moving because sometimes you have moving backgrounds and it shifts and you want backgrounds and it shifts and you want backgrounds and it shifts and you want to make sure you preserve skin tone uh to make sure you preserve skin tone uh to make sure you preserve skin tone uh so if you have that opportunity I think so if you have that opportunity I think so if you have that opportunity I think it is the best but like you said it's it is the best but like you said it's it is the best but like you said it's it's uh pretty hard it's very it's uh pretty hard it's very it's uh pretty hard it's very unapproachable it it takes a lot of unapproachable it it takes a lot of unapproachable it it takes a lot of experience I would say to get to the experience I would say to get to the experience I would say to get to the point where if you don't have somebody point where if you don't have somebody point where if you don't have somebody to ask what's the lighting temperatures to ask what's the lighting temperatures to ask what's the lighting temperatures uh you need a auto white balance is what uh you need a auto white balance is what uh you need a auto white balance is what works great for me um cameras are ever works great for me um cameras are ever works great for me um cameras are ever getting better the way you're doing it getting better the way you're doing it getting better the way you're doing it the way you're doing it is is exactly the way you're doing it is is exactly the way you're doing it is is exactly how I prefer to do it um in a before I how I prefer to do it um in a before I how I prefer to do it um in a before I started using the ey dropper tool I started using the ey dropper tool I started using the ey dropper tool I would try to handle these three sliders would try to handle these three sliders would try to handle these three sliders you know white balance tint and you know white balance tint and you know white balance tint and temperature by hand and by eye and for temperature by hand and by eye and for temperature by hand and by eye and for anyone who's ever manipulated a photo anyone who's ever manipulated a photo anyone who's ever manipulated a photo using these three sliders you know that using these three sliders you know that using these three sliders you know that it's really easy to just get a really it's really easy to just get a really it's really easy to just get a really bad looking a really bad colored photo bad looking a really bad colored photo bad looking a really bad colored photo by trying to manually manipulate these by trying to manually manipulate these by trying to manually manipulate these sliders but I did that for a long time sliders but I did that for a long time sliders but I did that for a long time this is this is a decade ago um but you this is this is a decade ago um but you this is this is a decade ago um but you just said it like we're trying to nail just said it like we're trying to nail just said it like we're trying to nail skin tone we are trying to be true to

I've got a bunch of stage lights on me I I've got a bunch of stage lights on me I because I am a white man a white person because I am a white man a white person because I am a white man a white person I know what my white skin is supposed to I know what my white skin is supposed to I know what my white skin is supposed to look like and I can tell the differences look like and I can tell the differences look like and I can tell the differences between like oh I look uh like a dead between like oh I look uh like a dead between like oh I look uh like a dead piece of fish there or I look like a piece of fish there or I look like a piece of fish there or I look like a person with a nice pink glow I look like person with a nice pink glow I look like person with a nice pink glow I look like myself but the uncomfortable reality is myself but the uncomfortable reality is myself but the uncomfortable reality is that I don't have that same perspective that I don't have that same perspective that I don't have that same perspective on dark complexion skin and you know the on dark complexion skin and you know the on dark complexion skin and you know the most crass way of saying it is like oh most crass way of saying it is like oh most crass way of saying it is like oh well black skin is black skin right no well black skin is black skin right no well black skin is black skin right no that's that's not true whatsoever and that's that's not true whatsoever and that's that's not true whatsoever and those subtle differences I'm not picking those subtle differences I'm not picking those subtle differences I'm not picking up I register them because I don't have up I register them because I don't have up I register them because I don't have that color skin but that Pastor was that color skin but that Pastor was that color skin but that Pastor was saying to me yeah like no the analogy saying to me yeah like no the analogy saying to me yeah like no the analogy would be like you're making me look like would be like you're making me look like would be like you're making me look like you know like got dead fish like that you know like got dead fish like that you know like got dead fish like that that that you know I was working with that that you know I was working with that that you know I was working with fish the other day making food that's fish the other day making food that's fish the other day making food that's what I my mind like the that white what I my mind like the that white what I my mind like the that white almost blue color of skin you know like almost blue color of skin you know like almost blue color of skin you know like a cadaver coming out it's like that's a cadaver coming out it's like that's a cadaver coming out it's like that's white skin but like it's got that nasty white skin but like it's got that nasty white skin but like it's got that nasty blue tinge to it I can see that the same blue tinge to it I can see that the same blue tinge to it I can see that the same version of that with darker complexion version of that with darker complexion version of that with darker complexion skin it's not registering yeah I'm not skin it's not registering yeah I'm not skin it's not registering yeah I'm not picking it up um we spent quite a bit of picking it up um we spent quite a bit of picking it up um we spent quite a bit of time on this image which is totally good time on this image which is totally good time on this image which is totally good that's true we are definitely running that's true we are definitely running that's true we are definitely running out of time but for for folks who aren't out of time but for for folks who aren't out of time but for for folks who aren't as familiar with Lightroom or like a as familiar with Lightroom or like a as familiar with Lightroom or like a process like this the advantage is um process like this the advantage is um process like this the advantage is um shooting in church is similar to my shooting in church is similar to my shooting in church is similar to my world that I came out of which is um world that I came out of which is um world that I came out of which is um shooting weddings which is these shoots shooting weddings which is these shoots shooting weddings which is these shoots happen in sequence and so you shoot all happen in sequence and so you shoot all happen in sequence and so you shoot all of your worship images at one time your of your worship images at one time your of your worship images at one time your next pack of images is people in the the next pack of images is people in the the next pack of images is people in the the pastor preaching maybe your next pack is pastor preaching maybe your next pack is pastor preaching maybe your next pack is folks in the lobby afterwards so when folks in the lobby afterwards so when folks in the lobby afterwards so when you import your hundreds of images into

moment but I make like this just a basic moment but I make like this just a basic S curve you'll see why it's called an S S curve you'll see why it's called an S S curve you'll see why it's called an S curve it's because I'm doing I'm pulling curve it's because I'm doing I'm pulling curve it's because I'm doing I'm pulling this side down I'm pulling that up and this side down I'm pulling that up and this side down I'm pulling that up and it looks almost like if you really it looks almost like if you really it looks almost like if you really stretch it out it looks like an S um and stretch it out it looks like an S um and stretch it out it looks like an S um and I do this because as you can see if I do this because as you can see if I do this because as you can see if you're pulling down this is adjusting you're pulling down this is adjusting you're pulling down this is adjusting the dark sides of the images so the the dark sides of the images so the the dark sides of the images so the Shadows the the blacks of the image it's Shadows the the blacks of the image it's Shadows the the blacks of the image it's adjusting that a little bit and adjusting that a little bit and adjusting that a little bit and darkening it as I pull it down if I darkening it as I pull it down if I darkening it as I pull it down if I pulled it up you can see it's it's pulled it up you can see it's it's pulled it up you can see it's it's lightening it too um but I pull it down lightening it too um but I pull it down lightening it too um but I pull it down just a little bit like this and I do just a little bit like this and I do just a little bit like this and I do like raising the lower end a little bit like raising the lower end a little bit like raising the lower end a little bit what this does is it kind of uh it fades what this does is it kind of uh it fades what this does is it kind of uh it fades out the blacks a little bit um you can out the blacks a little bit um you can out the blacks a little bit um you can you've probably seen people who' like you've probably seen people who' like you've probably seen people who' like really faded their images it was really faded their images it was really faded their images it was definitely on Trend a few years ago definitely on Trend a few years ago definitely on Trend a few years ago maybe it still is uh but I do an in maybe it still is uh but I do an in maybe it still is uh but I do an in between like a little secret sauce yes between like a little secret sauce yes between like a little secret sauce yes it's a little healthy in between I feel it's a little healthy in between I feel it's a little healthy in between I feel like it adds a little bit of um it's like it adds a little bit of um it's like it adds a little bit of um it's almost as if it's adding the haze that almost as if it's adding the haze that almost as if it's adding the haze that wasn't there wasn't there wasn't there and so I tend to add a little bit to my and so I tend to add a little bit to my and so I tend to add a little bit to my especially worship photos um and especially worship photos um and especially worship photos um and sometimes depending if there's a lot of sometimes depending if there's a lot of sometimes depending if there's a lot of highlights going on I will actually pull highlights going on I will actually pull highlights going on I will actually pull down the top of the curve too um but for down the top of the curve too um but for down the top of the curve too um but for this uh I'll probably just leave it this uh I'll probably just leave it this uh I'll probably just leave it generally where it's at generally where it's at generally where it's at um this uh color grading tool this is um this uh color grading tool this is um this uh color grading tool this is really great for um being able to add really great for um being able to add really great for um being able to add color to different portions you see it color to different portions you see it color to different portions you see it has highlights midtones and shadows so has highlights midtones and shadows so has highlights midtones and shadows so this is going to add a selected color to this is going to add a selected color to this is going to add a selected color to my Shadows this will add whatever color my Shadows this will add whatever color my Shadows this will add whatever color I select to the midtones and whichever I select to the midtones and whichever I select to the midtones and whichever to the highlights so what I like doing I

to the highlights so what I like doing I to the highlights so what I like doing I usually add a little bit just a touch of usually add a little bit just a touch of usually add a little bit just a touch of warmth into my uh Shadows here just a warmth into my uh Shadows here just a warmth into my uh Shadows here just a little bit um not too much I'm seriously little bit um not too much I'm seriously little bit um not too much I'm seriously like my saturation that's what the S like my saturation that's what the S like my saturation that's what the S stands for there it's under 10 like I stands for there it's under 10 like I stands for there it's under 10 like I keep it in the single digits uh it's keep it in the single digits uh it's keep it in the single digits uh it's just a little bit of just a little bit of just a little bit of um like a little bit of a seasoning on um like a little bit of a seasoning on um like a little bit of a seasoning on top and so for highlights I usually add top and so for highlights I usually add top and so for highlights I usually add a little bit of this cool blue in and a little bit of this cool blue in and a little bit of this cool blue in and again single digit in my saturation that again single digit in my saturation that again single digit in my saturation that s right there um and you can see kind of s right there um and you can see kind of s right there um and you can see kind of it's very subtle but if off on you can it's very subtle but if off on you can it's very subtle but if off on you can see like there's it's adding some warmth see like there's it's adding some warmth see like there's it's adding some warmth back into our subject here uh and some back into our subject here uh and some back into our subject here uh and some of the highlights are getting that uh of the highlights are getting that uh of the highlights are getting that uh that little bit of blue uh that's that little bit of blue uh that's that little bit of blue uh that's matching kind of the lights that are matching kind of the lights that are matching kind of the lights that are going on I sometimes I'll match a lot of going on I sometimes I'll match a lot of going on I sometimes I'll match a lot of the highlights and midtones to the the highlights and midtones to the the highlights and midtones to the lighting situation that's going on on lighting situation that's going on on lighting situation that's going on on stage uh just to add that a little bit stage uh just to add that a little bit stage uh just to add that a little bit of effect and uh we're we'll briefly of effect and uh we're we'll briefly of effect and uh we're we'll briefly touch on I these uh calibration tools at touch on I these uh calibration tools at touch on I these uh calibration tools at the bottom I think this can be where you the bottom I think this can be where you the bottom I think this can be where you can really have fun dialing in maybe can really have fun dialing in maybe can really have fun dialing in maybe your color uh profiles and how you're your color uh profiles and how you're your color uh profiles and how you're stylizing your image um this is where stylizing your image um this is where stylizing your image um this is where you can really get that uh that teal and you can really get that uh that teal and you can really get that uh that teal and orange look is by adjusting the Hues you orange look is by adjusting the Hues you orange look is by adjusting the Hues you see it's not just like like above these see it's not just like like above these see it's not just like like above these Hue uh saturation luminance channels Hue uh saturation luminance channels Hue uh saturation luminance channels these were these were just adjusting one

selector I can add in whatever color I selector I can add in whatever color I want and so this is how I can kind of want and so this is how I can kind of want and so this is how I can kind of fake stage lighting and add in some fake stage lighting and add in some fake stage lighting and add in some Intrigue and interest so like I in that Intrigue and interest so like I in that Intrigue and interest so like I in that one you saw I added some orange uh into one you saw I added some orange uh into one you saw I added some orange uh into the background um let me pull it in so the background um let me pull it in so the background um let me pull it in so it's a little more obvious there uh and it's a little more obvious there uh and it's a little more obvious there uh and you know I might have brighten that up I you know I might have brighten that up I you know I might have brighten that up I usually I'll boost the whites a little usually I'll boost the whites a little usually I'll boost the whites a little bit so it looks like it's lights I'll bit so it looks like it's lights I'll bit so it looks like it's lights I'll boost a little bit the exposure uh and boost a little bit the exposure uh and boost a little bit the exposure uh and this is again just playing around with this is again just playing around with this is again just playing around with it seeing what you like uh I'll also it seeing what you like uh I'll also it seeing what you like uh I'll also another thing I lower the clarity so it another thing I lower the clarity so it another thing I lower the clarity so it feels like oh it's interacting with the feels like oh it's interacting with the feels like oh it's interacting with the haze a little bit add a little dehaze haze a little bit add a little dehaze haze a little bit add a little dehaze again to like kind of make it feel like again to like kind of make it feel like again to like kind of make it feel like there's some Haze like it looks a little there's some Haze like it looks a little there's some Haze like it looks a little bit like it's hitting the lens just bit like it's hitting the lens just bit like it's hitting the lens just right it's causing a little bit of a right it's causing a little bit of a right it's causing a little bit of a flare maybe so by by this little bit it flare maybe so by by this little bit it flare maybe so by by this little bit it can add some Intrigue but the the other can add some Intrigue but the the other can add some Intrigue but the the other important part of this especially when I important part of this especially when I important part of this especially when I I want to preserve those skin tones I want to preserve those skin tones I want to preserve those skin tones Lightroom added this a little while ago Lightroom added this a little while ago Lightroom added this a little while ago and it's wonderful uh you can select and it's wonderful uh you can select and it's wonderful uh you can select your uh you can select your mask here I your uh you can select your mask here I your uh you can select your mask here I you see these plus and minus this is to you see these plus and minus this is to you see these plus and minus this is to add another layer mask to like add add another layer mask to like add add another layer mask to like add another layer to this mask or I could another layer to this mask or I could another layer to this mask or I could subtract from The Mask I created so hit subtract from The Mask I created so hit subtract from The Mask I created so hit the subtract and you know I know AI is a the subtract and you know I know AI is a the subtract and you know I know AI is a little bit of a buzzword but Adobe you little bit of a buzzword but Adobe you little bit of a buzzword but Adobe you know they added AI uh masking with uh know they added AI uh masking with uh know they added AI uh masking with uh their Lightroom now and so I do select their Lightroom now and so I do select their Lightroom now and so I do select subject subject subject and it's it's removing the color from and it's it's removing the color from and it's it's removing the color from him so now it truly looks like it's him so now it truly looks like it's him so now it truly looks like it's coming from behind him I can adjust this coming from behind him I can adjust this coming from behind him I can adjust this wherever you so let's make it really wherever you so let's make it really wherever you so let's make it really extreme and it cuts them out it's it
