has been in existence for 63 years and has been in existence for 63 years and I've had the privilege of serving as a I've had the privilege of serving as a I've had the privilege of serving as a lead pastor for 13 of those years so an lead pastor for 13 of those years so an lead pastor for 13 of those years so an historical church we're part of the historical church we're part of the historical church we're part of the Assemblies of God and have just got a Assemblies of God and have just got a Assemblies of God and have just got a great I guess you would say kind of a great I guess you would say kind of a great I guess you would say kind of a name and presence in our community a lot name and presence in our community a lot name and presence in our community a lot of rich history here strong missions of rich history here strong missions of rich history here strong missions minded church and when I arrived just minded church and when I arrived just minded church and when I arrived just was thankful for the opportunity to was thankful for the opportunity to was thankful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity I'd been here in serve in this capacity I'd been here in serve in this capacity I'd been here in Atlanta for about eight years prior to Atlanta for about eight years prior to Atlanta for about eight years prior to that but really was unfamiliar with this that but really was unfamiliar with this that but really was unfamiliar with this side of town we were over on the side of town we were over on the side of town we were over on the opposite side of town and so I was kind opposite side of town and so I was kind opposite side of town and so I was kind of a like the church was kind of a blank of a like the church was kind of a blank of a like the church was kind of a blank slate once I started interviewing with slate once I started interviewing with slate once I started interviewing with the board and those types of things but the board and those types of things but the board and those types of things but just knew from information just knew from information just knew from information new from just getting connected here was new from just getting connected here was new from just getting connected here was a real healthy Church great pastors a real healthy Church great pastors a real healthy Church great pastors before me only four out of those 50 before me only four out of those 50 before me only four out of those 50 years so they had long tenure pastors years so they had long tenure pastors years so they had long tenure pastors and Smyrna itself is a suburb of suburb and Smyrna itself is a suburb of suburb and Smyrna itself is a suburb of suburb of the Atlanta metro and has been of the Atlanta metro and has been of the Atlanta metro and has been continuing to see growth over the years continuing to see growth over the years continuing to see growth over the years and you know being here at this church and you know being here at this church and you know being here at this church was a real exciting time and I arrived was a real exciting time and I arrived was a real exciting time and I arrived and realized that it was a healthy and realized that it was a healthy and realized that it was a healthy Church strong-minded church but realize Church strong-minded church but realize Church strong-minded church but realize that there were some things that we that there were some things that we that there were some things that we could do better I think to really reach could do better I think to really reach could do better I think to really reach our community and that's kind of what our community and that's kind of what our community and that's kind of what started the journey but if somebody was started the journey but if somebody was started the journey but if somebody was showing up on Sunday today it'd be a lot showing up on Sunday today it'd be a lot showing up on Sunday today it'd be a lot different than 13 years ago in that 13 different than 13 years ago in that 13 different than 13 years ago in that 13 years ago we were pretty almost years ago we were pretty almost years ago we were pretty almost exclusively Caucasian fellowship right exclusively Caucasian fellowship right exclusively Caucasian fellowship right oh and really within about a year not do oh and really within about a year not do oh and really within about a year not do anything idea to we did but God just

know missions particularly foreign but know missions particularly foreign but then what was going on you know locally then what was going on you know locally then what was going on you know locally as it looked to reach out you know to as it looked to reach out you know to as it looked to reach out you know to Smyrna great question rich yeah I would Smyrna great question rich yeah I would Smyrna great question rich yeah I would say the Assemblies of God in our say the Assemblies of God in our say the Assemblies of God in our heritage starting back in the early heritage starting back in the early heritage starting back in the early 1900's really were founded with a strong 1900's really were founded with a strong 1900's really were founded with a strong emphasis on taking the gospel around the emphasis on taking the gospel around the emphasis on taking the gospel around the world and so that's continued on I think world and so that's continued on I think world and so that's continued on I think we're probably one of not be not be but we're probably one of not be not be but we're probably one of not be not be but one of the leading fellowships of one of the leading fellowships of one of the leading fellowships of churches as we would prefer to call to churches as we would prefer to call to churches as we would prefer to call to ourselves in supporting missions ourselves in supporting missions ourselves in supporting missions nationally and internationally and our nationally and internationally and our nationally and internationally and our church really took the heart of missions church really took the heart of missions church really took the heart of missions on with the the pastor two guys before on with the the pastor two guys before on with the the pastor two guys before me as he introduced the concept to our me as he introduced the concept to our me as he introduced the concept to our church and so by God's grace and into church and so by God's grace and into church and so by God's grace and into the congregation's credit we've been for the congregation's credit we've been for the congregation's credit we've been for many many years and about the top three many many years and about the top three many many years and about the top three to five percent of Ag churches in the to five percent of Ag churches in the to five percent of Ag churches in the nation when it comes to supporting nation when it comes to supporting nation when it comes to supporting missions it's just been a really missions it's just been a really missions it's just been a really ingrained in our DNA but the part that I ingrained in our DNA but the part that I ingrained in our DNA but the part that I saw that oftentimes is the case with saw that oftentimes is the case with saw that oftentimes is the case with historical churches is that we were historical churches is that we were historical churches is that we were doing I think a pretty good job of doing I think a pretty good job of doing I think a pretty good job of holding hands singing Kumbaya on our holding hands singing Kumbaya on our holding hands singing Kumbaya on our campus providing ministry and we were campus providing ministry and we were campus providing ministry and we were doing an exceptional job of supporting doing an exceptional job of supporting doing an exceptional job of supporting missions all around the world now they missions all around the world now they missions all around the world now they support us some locally but man we were support us some locally but man we were support us some locally but man we were just missing our Jerusalem and that's just missing our Jerusalem and that's just missing our Jerusalem and that's what started this journey of what we now what started this journey of what we now what started this journey of what we now call community partnerships and I just call community partnerships and I just call community partnerships and I just saw a great opportunity with rewrite saw a great opportunity with rewrite saw a great opportunity with rewrite next door right out my window is a next door right out my window is a next door right out my window is a middle school and so when I arrived I middle school and so when I arrived I middle school and so when I arrived I asked the youth pastor that was serving asked the youth pastor that was serving asked the youth pastor that was serving at the time I said what's our at the time I said what's our at the time I said what's our relationship with this middle school and

relationship with this middle school and relationship with this middle school and he said next door neighbors kind of us he said next door neighbors kind of us he said next door neighbors kind of us yeah he had only been for about a year yeah he had only been for about a year yeah he had only been for about a year at the time and so discovered he had at the time and so discovered he had at the time and so discovered he had been on campus through FCA and some been on campus through FCA and some been on campus through FCA and some things well we got an invitation or an things well we got an invitation or an things well we got an invitation or an opportunity to meet with the principal opportunity to meet with the principal opportunity to meet with the principal and just reached out and started saying and just reached out and started saying and just reached out and started saying hey we're next-door neighbors were in hey we're next-door neighbors were in hey we're next-door neighbors were in the same community how can we serve you the same community how can we serve you the same community how can we serve you in the school and Richie was taken back in the school and Richie was taken back in the school and Richie was taken back he said you know nobody's really ever he said you know nobody's really ever he said you know nobody's really ever asked me that Wow and yet see is that in asked me that Wow and yet see is that in asked me that Wow and yet see is that in this community now smart ourselves about this community now smart ourselves about this community now smart ourselves about 55,000 people it's swallowed up in the 55,000 people it's swallowed up in the 55,000 people it's swallowed up in the Atlanta metro with Atlanta metro with Atlanta metro with millions but this is a small community millions but this is a small community millions but this is a small community in Atlanta metro where you can get to in Atlanta metro where you can get to in Atlanta metro where you can get to know key leaders whether it be school know key leaders whether it be school know key leaders whether it be school officials or governmental officials officials or governmental officials officials or governmental officials business leaders those types of folks business leaders those types of folks business leaders those types of folks and Ford some really cool relationships and Ford some really cool relationships and Ford some really cool relationships and what we've discovered is that by and what we've discovered is that by and what we've discovered is that by intentionally getting out of our intentionally getting out of our intentionally getting out of our building it into our community and building it into our community and building it into our community and building those relationships we're able building those relationships we're able building those relationships we're able to and we use the phrase earn the right to and we use the phrase earn the right to and we use the phrase earn the right to be heard through serving and so to be heard through serving and so to be heard through serving and so that's a phrase that we borrowed from that's a phrase that we borrowed from that's a phrase that we borrowed from Pastor Mike Lynch up at northlake rake Pastor Mike Lynch up at northlake rake Pastor Mike Lynch up at northlake rake grads a great Church great leader for grads a great Church great leader for grads a great Church great leader for sure and just realize that you know sure and just realize that you know sure and just realize that you know that's the model that God wants us to that's the model that God wants us to that's the model that God wants us to use to really begin to impact our city use to really begin to impact our city use to really begin to impact our city more and so that's where it started was more and so that's where it started was more and so that's where it started was with the middle school and then a with the middle school and then a with the middle school and then a Mexican restaurant that we die and Mexican restaurant that we die and Mexican restaurant that we die and infrequently we're to learn now we've infrequently we're to learn now we've infrequently we're to learn now we've got I think 35 36 community partners Wow got I think 35 36 community partners Wow got I think 35 36 community partners Wow seems with whom we as we stay at hold seems with whom we as we stay at hold seems with whom we as we stay at hold hands through shared values we host hands through shared values we host hands through shared values we host events we volunteer in their

events we volunteer in their events we volunteer in their organizations we provide funding on organizations we provide funding on organizations we provide funding on occasion that's not part of it it's the occasion that's not part of it it's the occasion that's not part of it it's the relational part of it what we've learned relational part of it what we've learned relational part of it what we've learned is it's just hard for folks to say no to is it's just hard for folks to say no to is it's just hard for folks to say no to genuine love and concern and an interest genuine love and concern and an interest genuine love and concern and an interest in what they're doing and that's the key in what they're doing and that's the key in what they're doing and that's the key and so you so they can learn how to communicate with they can learn how to communicate with they can learn how to communicate with people this is our language school it people this is our language school it community christian ease into our community finding out where is their heartbeat finding out where is their heartbeat finding out where is their heartbeat what are their needs and then can we do what are their needs and then can we do what are their needs and then can we do something about that can we help in some something about that can we help in some something about that can we help in some way and because we're in the same way and because we're in the same way and because we're in the same community men there are so many overlaps community men there are so many overlaps community men there are so many overlaps between the local church and businesses between the local church and businesses between the local church and businesses or government or schools or homeschool or government or schools or homeschool or government or schools or homeschool networks or scouting groups that there's networks or scouting groups that there's networks or scouting groups that there's just such a wonderful opportunity that I just such a wonderful opportunity that I just such a wonderful opportunity that I think really is a is a model that can be think really is a is a model that can be think pastors roundtables with about 50 or 60 pastors roundtables with about 50 or 60 pastors roundtables with about 50 or 60 pastors to teach on this and I think it pastors to teach on this and I think it pastors to teach on this and I think it can be used similarly anywhere but you can be used similarly anywhere but you can be used similarly anywhere but you know you don't 30-6 you start with one know want to lead a church where we're like this walled fortress and it's we're like this walled fortress and it's we're like this walled fortress and it's like we don't have any connection with like we don't have any connection with like we don't have any connection with the community I think a lot of people the community I think a lot of people the community I think a lot of people who tuned in want to have those kind of who tuned in want to have those kind of who tuned in want to have those kind of relationships but they don't know where relationships but they don't know where relationships but they don't know where to start where do you coach or recommend to start where do you coach or recommend to start where do you coach or recommend church leaders start how do you even

almost like going to your next-door neighbor in your neighborhood next-door neighbor in your neighborhood next-door neighbor in your neighborhood or your townhome or your apartment or your townhome or your apartment or your townhome or your apartment complex and just shaking hands saying complex and just shaking hands saying complex and just shaking hands saying hello yeah and so you know rich i really see is that everything is about really see is that everything is about really see is that everything is about relationship you know Jesus is the groom relationship you know Jesus is the groom relationship you know Jesus is the groom and the church is the Bride and we've and the church is the Bride and we've and the church is the Bride and we've got a Heavenly Father we're brothers and got relational and so when we take that relational and so when we take that relational and so when we take that model and we intentionally don't call model and we intentionally don't call model and we intentionally don't call these community outreach programs or our these community outreach programs or our these community outreach programs or our community evangelistic projects or community evangelistic projects or community evangelistic projects or whatever its community partnerships whatever its community partnerships whatever its community partnerships because partnership implies we're because partnership implies we're because partnership implies we're getting together or continuous you getting together or continuous you getting together or continuous you usually for the benefit of the community usually for the benefit of the community usually for the benefit of the community and so the questions you ask is well how and so the questions you ask is well how and so the month or week or a night of the month or something where we can encourage our something where we can encourage our something where we can encourage our church folks to come dine and maybe he'd

to for somebody to be pushing people to for somebody to be pushing people to their business yeah I said he'll do their business yeah I said he'll do their business yeah I said he'll do something i
