you it's really a thriving church with a you it's really a thriving church with a you know weekly attendance about 4,000 know weekly attendance about 4,000 know weekly attendance about 4,000 people it was one of the fastest growing people it was one of the fastest growing people it was one of the fastest growing churches uh in 2014 I think also in 2015 churches uh in 2014 I think also in 2015 churches uh in 2014 I think also in 2015 um just a great church and if if if um just a great church and if if if um just a great church and if if if you're not following them you should get you're not a chance to kind of get to know them a a chance to kind of get to know them a little bit better Mark why don't you little bit better Mark why don't you little bit better Mark why don't you tell us a little bit about um the church tell us a little bit about um the church tell us a little bit about um the church and then also your role there give us a and then also your role there give us a and then also your role there give us a sense of the flavor of the church okay sense of the flavor of the church okay sense of the flavor of the church okay um yeah so we're in Northwest San um yeah so we're in Northwest San um yeah so we're in Northwest San Antonio um started in 86 so we were out Antonio um started in 86 so we were out Antonio um started in 86 so we were out here when you there was really the only here when you there was really the only here when you there was really the only thing was out here was SeaWorld QVC and thing was out here was SeaWorld QVC and thing was out here was SeaWorld QVC and our church and our church and our church and so absolutely and so uh have a long so absolutely and so uh have a long so absolutely and so uh have a long history in this area uh just celebrated history in this area uh just celebrated history in this area uh just celebrated uh 30 years SL 30 years will be this uh 30 years SL 30 years will be this uh 30 years SL 30 years will be this coming year so um so our church is a coming year so um so our church is a coming year so um so our church is a very Multicultural Church um we kind of very Multicultural Church um we kind of very Multicultural Church um we kind of like to say we're colorblind nice you like to say we're colorblind nice you like to say we're colorblind nice you know um that's just kind of the the know um that's just kind of the the know um that's just kind of the the heart of our pastor right and really heart of our pastor right and really heart of our pastor right and really that bleeds down to our staff so um we that bleeds down to our staff so um we that bleeds down to our staff so um we love to express our worship we love to love to express our worship we love to love to express our worship we love to uh just make Bible and the weekend so uh just make Bible and the weekend so uh just make Bible and the weekend so relevant um we're very NextGen um just relevant um we're very NextGen um just relevant um we're very NextGen um just uh for kids for students we're very uh for kids for students we're very uh for kids for students we're very driven for the Next Generation so uh got driven for the Next Generation so uh got driven for the Next Generation so uh got a great church a great in a great city a great church a great in a great city a great church a great in a great city um a lot of you know San Antonio has um a lot of you know San Antonio has um a lot of you know San Antonio has been known as um military military City been known as um military military City been known as um military military City USA because of all the bases okay so we USA because of all the bases okay so we USA because of all the bases okay so we have a lot of people that come in and we have a lot of people that come in and we have a lot of people that come in and we get so we're constantly meeting people get so we're constantly meeting people get so we're constantly meeting people from all over because of a lot of them from all over because of a lot of them from all over because of a lot of them live in this area um this whole region

live in this area um this whole region live in this area um this whole region of San or area of San Antonio these the of San or area of San Antonio these the of San or area of San Antonio these the ZIP code has grown quite a bit so uh our ZIP code has grown quite a bit so uh our ZIP code has grown quite a bit so uh our church all that to say is our church is church all that to say is our church is church all that to say is our church is very Multicultural and um yeah so that's very Multicultural and um yeah so that's very Multicultural and um yeah so that's that's a little bit of who West over that's a little bit of who West over that's a little bit of who West over Hills is if people were to come on on a Hills is if people were to come on on a Hills is if people were to come on on a weekend or you know how would they what weekend or you know how would they what weekend or you know how would they what would the kind of experience with the would the kind of experience with the would the kind of experience with the ministry not just weekends but because I ministry not just weekends but because I ministry not just weekends but because I know to do midweek Services what is you know to do midweek Services what is you know to do midweek Services what is you know give us a sense of what that what know give us a sense of what that what know give us a sense of what that what that experience would be like well we that experience would be like well we that experience would be like well we obviously like any church we want them obviously like any church we want them obviously like any church we want them to have a great first impression we to have a great first impression we to have a great first impression we believe that the altar starts in the believe that the altar starts in the believe that the altar starts in the parking lot and so we're really wanting parking lot and so we're really wanting parking lot and so we're really wanting to to to before um before they hear the message before um before they hear the message before um before they hear the message that they're already starting to get that they're already starting to get that they're already starting to get captivated um so we we always start on captivated um so we we always start on captivated um so we we always start on time um you know we we value people's time um you know we we value people's time um you know we we value people's time y we kind of we kind of create the time y we kind of we kind of create the time y we kind of we kind of create the that hour in 20 minutes um we say that that hour in 20 minutes um we say that that hour in 20 minutes um we say that that is it's the message is not the that is it's the message is not the that is it's the message is not the how can I phrase this the whole service how can I phrase this the whole service how can I phrase this the whole service is the message not just preaching yes so is the message not just preaching yes so is the message not just preaching yes so we really feel like when people come in we really feel like when people come in we really feel like when people come in um from this from the countdown to the um from this from the countdown to the um from this from the countdown to the first strike of the drum the first note first strike of the drum the first note first strike of the drum the first note we we want God to begin to speak to we we want God to begin to speak to we we want God to begin to speak to people and not just people um wait for people and not just people um wait for people and not just people um wait for for the pre the pastor to preach or for the pre the pastor to preach or for the pre the pastor to preach or whoever speak so we feel like they're whoever speak so we feel like they're whoever speak so we feel like they're going to get a just a great time of going to get a just a great time of going to get a just a great time of worship time of Celebration worship time of Celebration worship time of Celebration um we don't spend a lot of time on um we don't spend a lot of time on um we don't spend a lot of time on announcements and then we hopefully that

announcements and then we hopefully that announcements and then we hopefully that they don't don't just get challenged but they don't don't just get challenged but they don't don't just get challenged but they leave changed um after the service they leave changed um after the service they leave changed um after the service very cool and now tell us about your very cool and now tell us about your very cool and now tell us about your role there at the church what's what's role there at the church what's what's role there at the church what's what's your job um um my role is executive your job um um my role is executive your job um um my role is executive Pastor Ministry so um my key role that's Pastor Ministry so um my key role that's Pastor Ministry so um my key role that's my title but my key role is to just help my title but my key role is to just help my title but my key role is to just help Advance the heart of our pastor um now Advance the heart of our pastor um now Advance the heart of our pastor um now there is a job description but that is there is a job description but that is there is a job description but that is kind of a big part of kind of a big part of kind of a big part of what I um need to do help do and kind of what I um need to do help do and kind of what I um need to do help do and kind of carry his heart to the staff um I carry his heart to the staff um I carry his heart to the staff um I oversee the ministry staff um you know oversee the ministry staff um you know oversee the ministry staff um you know that of course that's children youth that of course that's children youth that of course that's children youth music care seniors um missions all those music care seniors um missions all those music care seniors um missions all those things I kind of help guide that and run things I kind of help guide that and run things I kind of help guide that and run the staff in that in that regard a the staff in that in that regard a the staff in that in that regard a church of your size um you know there is church of your size um you know there is church of your size um you know there is a unique kind of culture that uh you a unique kind of culture that uh you a unique kind of culture that uh you know rotates around it it is you know know rotates around it it is you know know rotates around it it is you know You' you have to continue to reinforce You' you have to continue to reinforce You' you have to continue to reinforce the things that you see as valuable and the things that you see as valuable and the things that you see as valuable and you know trim off that stuff that you're you know trim off that stuff that you're you know trim off that stuff that you're like oh that's not quite us um I wonder like oh that's not quite us um I wonder like oh that's not quite us um I wonder if you could if we could talk through if you could if we could talk through if you could if we could talk through that a little bit how is it that you're that a little bit how is it that you're that a little bit how is it that you're able to shape culture uh at West over able to shape culture uh at West over able to shape culture uh at West over Hills well you know when we're when all Hills well you know when we're when all Hills well you know when we're when all the pastors are together in one room we the pastors are together in one room we the pastors are together in one room we are are Defenders of culture we are are are Defenders of culture we are are are Defenders of culture we are implementers of culture we it's our we implementers of culture we it's our we implementers of culture we it's our we look at it from the top down from our look at it from the top down from our look at it from the top down from our pastor to our staff we have got to deep pastor to our staff we have got to deep pastor to our staff we have got to deep seed seed that we actually recognize as seed seed that we actually recognize as seed seed that we actually recognize as culture as an extra staff member because

culture as an extra staff member because culture as an extra staff member because when people come in we want them to feel when people come in we want them to feel when people come in we want them to feel the vibe of who we are um we often say the vibe of who we are um we often say the vibe of who we are um we often say we're not personality driven you know we're not personality driven you know we're not personality driven you know what you see is what you get we're going what you see is what you get we're going what you see is what you get we're going to stay consistent to who God has called to stay consistent to who God has called to stay consistent to who God has called us to be we absolutely love what us to be we absolutely love what us to be we absolutely love what different churches are doing in our area different churches are doing in our area different churches are doing in our area we have some phenomenal we have some phenomenal we have some phenomenal churches um churches um churches um and uh we often say hey we'd love for and uh we often say hey we'd love for and uh we often say hey we'd love for you to be a part of our church but if you to be a part of our church but if you to be a part of our church but if not there are great churches in our area not there are great churches in our area not there are great churches in our area but we stick close to we stay close to but we stick close to we stay close to but we stick close to we stay close to Who We Are Who God has called us to be Who We Are Who God has called us to be Who We Are Who God has called us to be um so we we try to deep seed our culture um so we we try to deep seed our culture um so we we try to deep seed our culture and our staff and then we got to take it and our staff and then we got to take it and our staff and then we got to take it and Champion that to our volunteers to and Champion that to our volunteers to and Champion that to our volunteers to make sure they're hearing who we are and make sure they're hearing who we are and make sure they're hearing who we are and what we're about what would you say are what we're about what would you say are what we're about what would you say are you know would be some of those you know you know would be some of those you know you know would be some of those you know maybe guide rails uh of your culture maybe guide rails uh of your culture maybe guide rails uh of your culture things where you're like oh I feel like things where you're like oh I feel like things where you're like oh I feel like we're pushing outside of the kind of we're pushing outside of the kind of we're pushing outside of the kind of church God's called us to be we're church God's called us to be we're church God's called us to be we're becoming too much like someone else um becoming too much like someone else um becoming too much like someone else um what would be some of those things that what would be some of those things that what would be some of those things that have popped up that you've you've tried have popped up that you've you've tried have popped up that you've you've tried to kind of move back towards and then to kind of move back towards and then to kind of move back towards and then how have you done that how have you how have you done that how have you how have you done that how have you identified them and then how have you identified them and then how have you identified them and then how have you kind of you know found the problems and kind of you know found the problems and kind of you know found the problems and then also tried to kind of guide them then also tried to kind of guide them then also tried to kind of guide them back towards closer to what the culture back towards closer to what the culture back towards closer to what the culture you're trying to create well I think one you're trying to create well I think one you're trying to create well I think one area is you know every Church always is area is you know every Church always is area is you know every Church always is struggles and it's always a challenge struggles and it's always a challenge struggles and it's always a challenge getting getting getting volunteers that is just the universal volunteers that is just the universal volunteers that is just the universal absolutely and I think one of the things absolutely and I think one of the things absolutely and I think one of the things we we kind of notice if we are if we are we we kind of notice if we are if we are we we kind of notice if we are if we are not become if we're always being doers not become if we're always being doers not become if we're always being doers of task and not developers of people we

of task and not developers of people we of task and not developers of people we start to get a kind of Drift from who start to get a kind of Drift from who start to get a kind of Drift from who God wants us to be and God wants us to be and God wants us to be and um when we're struggling with that we um when we're struggling with that we um when we're struggling with that we feel like we're we're trying to carry feel like we're we're trying to carry feel like we're we're trying to carry too much and we're not being able to let too much and we're not being able to let too much and we're not being able to let people grow in our church and and and people grow in our church and and and people grow in our church and and and help us carry the vision and so when help us carry the vision and so when help us carry the vision and so when that happens when we see whatever it that happens when we see whatever it that happens when we see whatever it could be we we we right now if on a could be we we we right now if on a could be we we we right now if on a roster of volunteers across the board we roster of volunteers across the board we roster of volunteers across the board we probably have anywhere from 950 to a probably have anywhere from 950 to a probably have anywhere from 950 to a th000 people that whether it's kids th000 people that whether it's kids th000 people that whether it's kids youth uh children um music that are youth uh children um music that are youth uh children um music that are volunteering when we see uh when we see volunteering when we see uh when we see volunteering when we see uh when we see that decline when we don't see the the that decline when we don't see the the that decline when we don't see the the heart of being extended through heart of being extended through heart of being extended through volunteers and people have caught our volunteers and people have caught our volunteers and people have caught our vision vision vision that begins to to tilt us it begins to that begins to to tilt us it begins to that begins to to tilt us it begins to drift and we've got to we've got to kind drift and we've got to we've got to kind drift and we've got to we've got to kind of bring it back that's one area one of bring it back that's one area one of bring it back that's one area one example that we try to keep our crossair example that we try to keep our crossair example that we try to keep our crossair on yeah when you um kind of changing on yeah when you um kind of changing on yeah when you um kind of changing direction a little bit just talking direction a little bit just talking direction a little bit just talking about something different obviously a about something different obviously a about something different obviously a church like yours um is growing and you church like yours um is growing and you church like yours um is growing and you know there there are a lot of people know there there are a lot of people know there there are a lot of people coming in through um you know the the coming in through um you know the the coming in through um you know the the front door um how do you guys think front door um how do you guys think front door um how do you guys think about the backdoor problem or the about the backdoor problem or the about the backdoor problem or the backdoor issue you know as a church backdoor issue you know as a church backdoor issue you know as a church well it is I I think we have your well it is I I think we have your well it is I I think we have your everyday um visitor who may be a everyday um visitor who may be a everyday um visitor who may be a seasoned Church person they just moved seasoned Church person they just moved seasoned Church person they just moved to the area but then we will always have

to the area but then we will always have to the area but then we will always have you know those secret you know those secret you know those secret shoppers um they're they're not going shoppers um they're they're not going shoppers um they're they're not going to um fill out a card right they're not to um fill out a card right they're not to um fill out a card right they're not going to raise their hand they're not g going to raise their hand they're not g going to raise their hand they're not g to they're going to so we we that is an to they're going to so we we that is an to they're going to so we we that is an area where I think we have always had to area where I think we have always had to area where I think we have always had to work through with with regards work through with with regards work through with with regards simulation um we try to make sure that simulation um we try to make sure that simulation um we try to make sure that every weekend we are providing people every weekend we are providing people every weekend we are providing people with what we would in our language a with what we would in our language a with what we would in our language a Next Step here's the next step for you Next Step here's the next step for you Next Step here's the next step for you if you're new to our our church here's if you're new to our our church here's if you're new to our our church here's the next step for you um because if we the next step for you um because if we the next step for you um because if we don't put that in front of people all don't put that in front of people all don't put that in front of people all the time um again a lot of those secret the time um again a lot of those secret the time um again a lot of those secret shoppers are going to go out of back shoppers are going to go out of back shoppers are going to go out of back door and they would never be on our door and they would never be on our door and they would never be on our radar um the only if they don't fail out radar um the only if they don't fail out radar um the only if they don't fail out a card or they attend like a welcome a card or they attend like a welcome a card or they attend like a welcome weekend something of that regard they weekend something of that regard they weekend something of that regard they may not show up on our database until may not show up on our database until may not show up on our database until they give something right by that time they give something right by that time they give something right by that time it could it could very easily easily be it could it could very easily easily be it could it could very easily easily be seven eight months down the road and seven eight months down the road and seven eight months down the road and they have not connected anywhere and we they have not connected anywhere and we they have not connected anywhere and we feel like we're going to keep them so feel like we're going to keep them so feel like we're going to keep them so you know again our next steps is you know again our next steps is you know again our next steps is critical to helping people move along critical to helping people move along critical to helping people move along and make sure they don't get to that and make sure they don't get to that and make sure they don't get to that back door what would be some of those back door what would be some of those back door what would be some of those you know next steps the kind of things you know next steps the kind of things you know next steps the kind of things that you're encouraging people to you that you're encouraging people to you that you're encouraging people to you know I think that's a critical lesson I know I think that's a critical lesson I know I think that's a critical lesson I hope for church leaders that are hope for church leaders that are hope for church leaders that are listening listening in um that you know listening listening in um that you know listening listening in um that you know providing clear um really relevant you providing clear um really relevant you providing clear um really relevant you know this is what we're asking people to know this is what we're asking people to know this is what we're asking people to do is super important what are some of do is super important what are some of do is super important what are some of those things that you're asking people those things that you're asking people those things that you're asking people to do some of the next steps you're

to do some of the next steps you're to do some of the next steps you're you're asking people to take at your you're asking people to take at your you're asking people to take at your church well we kind of go with the church well we kind of go with the church well we kind of go with the approach Andy Stanley obvious and approach Andy Stanley obvious and approach Andy Stanley obvious and strategic yes um something very easy for strategic yes um something very easy for strategic yes um something very easy for them to do um on the Practical side we them to do um on the Practical side we them to do um on the Practical side we do have every month a welcome weekend do have every month a welcome weekend do have every month a welcome weekend every month every service we have a every month every service we have a every month every service we have a place where people can stop by and um place where people can stop by and um place where people can stop by and um get connected and find out our next step get connected and find out our next step get connected and find out our next step that could be um our mission statement that could be um our mission statement that could be um our mission statement is making you and making great we have a is making you and making great we have a is making you and making great we have a making new class for people who are just making new class for people who are just making new class for people who are just brand new in the Lord or they're they're brand new in the Lord or they're they're brand new in the Lord or they're they're kind of still that Seeker you know we kind of still that Seeker you know we kind of still that Seeker you know we invite them to be a part of that we we invite them to be a part of that we we invite them to be a part of that we we we publicly announce hey if you're new we publicly announce hey if you're new we publicly announce hey if you're new to Christ and you're just wanting to to Christ and you're just wanting to to Christ and you're just wanting to find out I know I'm supposed to pray but find out I know I'm supposed to pray but find out I know I'm supposed to pray but I'm not sure how to do that making new I'm not sure how to do that making new I'm not sure how to do that making new class is what you need to be a part of class is what you need to be a part of class is what you need to be a part of so it's just so it's just so it's just consistently um uh getting them to a consistently um uh getting them to a consistently um uh getting them to a growth a growth pathway our strategy is growth a growth pathway our strategy is growth a growth pathway our strategy is is connecting growing and serving and so is connecting growing and serving and so is connecting growing and serving and so we feel like the connecting is we do a we feel like the connecting is we do a we feel like the connecting is we do a decent we do a good job at that it can decent we do a good job at that it can decent we do a good job at that it can always do better but the growing there always do better but the growing there always do better but the growing there are multiple Pathways that they can do are multiple Pathways that they can do are multiple Pathways that they can do again be a small group involved in again be a small group involved in again be a small group involved in Ministry um uh taking some type of a Ministry um uh taking some type of a Ministry um uh taking some type of a class that we may have um all the way class that we may have um all the way class that we may have um all the way from your traditional Bible study to from your traditional Bible study to from your traditional Bible study to doing zumba you know just whatever it doing zumba you know just whatever it doing zumba you know just whatever it takes to get them connected with people takes to get them connected with people takes to get them connected with people we feel big church gets small real quick
