  2. but why don't we why don't you tell us but why don't we why don't you tell us why are you so passionate about why are you so passionate about why are you so passionate about something that can be so something that can be so something that can be so mundane as meetings why are you so mundane as meetings why are you so mundane as meetings why are you so passionate about meetings passionate about meetings passionate about meetings well well well you know i started out at a company you know i started out at a company you know i started out at a company called ernst young which is a consulting called ernst young which is a consulting called ernst young which is a consulting firm and i worked with fortune 500 firm and i worked with fortune 500 firm and i worked with fortune 500 companies all over the country and you companies all over the country and you companies all over the country and you know when i go to these fortune 500 know when i go to these fortune 500 know when i go to these fortune 500 organizations to advise them i just got organizations to advise them i just got organizations to advise them i just got caught up in all these meetings and caught up in all these meetings and caught up in all these meetings and it was a terrible terrible experience i it was a terrible terrible experience i it was a terrible terrible experience i mean i i you know it seemed like it mean i i you know it seemed like it mean i i you know it seemed like it seemed like everyone else just took this seemed like everyone else just took this seemed like everyone else just took this as a fact of work life in organizations as a fact of work life in organizations as a fact of work life in organizations um but i just couldn't understand why um but i just couldn't understand why um but i just couldn't understand why there were these meetings that people there were these meetings that people there were these meetings that people were spending all their day in but were spending all their day in but were spending all their day in but nothing was getting done nothing was getting done nothing was getting done and the reason why i'm so passionate and the reason why i'm so passionate and the reason why i'm so passionate about this is because i believe in about this is because i believe in about this is because i believe in the value of organizations you know what the value of organizations you know what the value of organizations you know what do you think about what an organization do you think about what an organization do you think about what an organization is the promise of an organization it's is the promise of an organization it's is the promise of an organization it's pretty simple we don't often think about pretty simple we don't often think about pretty simple we don't often think about it but it's the idea that multiple it but it's the idea that multiple it but it's the idea that multiple people working together in concert you people working together in concert you people working together in concert you know systematically can do way more than know systematically can do way more than know systematically can do way more than they could individually right they can they could individually right they can they could individually right they can achieve these powerful powerful missions achieve these powerful powerful missions achieve these powerful powerful missions when they're working together and i got when they're working together and i got when they're working together and i got so frustrated to learn that the meeting so frustrated to learn that the meeting so frustrated to learn that the meeting which is kind of the linchpin of how which is kind of the linchpin of how which is kind of the linchpin of how people work together in small and big people work together in small and big people work together in small and big organizations was it seems like it was organizations was it seems like it was organizations was it seems like it was preventing them from achieving their preventing them from achieving their preventing them from achieving their missions instead of instead of basically missions instead of instead of basically missions instead of instead of basically accelerating their path towards these accelerating their path towards these accelerating their path towards these missions so i could care less about the missions so i could care less about the missions so i could care less about the meetings i care i care about people's meetings i care i care about people's meetings i care i care about people's missions yes and that's why i think missions yes and that's why i think missions yes and that's why i think meetings can be a tool to accelerate the meetings can be a tool to accelerate the meetings can be a tool to accelerate the path to the mission is why i'm so

  3. path to the mission is why i'm so path to the mission is why i'm so passionate about them absolutely so uh passionate about them absolutely so uh passionate about them absolutely so uh your book is called it's got a great your book is called it's got a great your book is called it's got a great title read this before our next meeting title read this before our next meeting title read this before our next meeting uh fantastic title how did you come up uh fantastic title how did you come up uh fantastic title how did you come up with that title that's just a great with that title that's just a great with that title that's just a great why'd you call it that why'd you call it that why'd you call it that it's a it's a good question um i wanted it's a it's a good question um i wanted it's a it's a good question um i wanted something that would uh kind of provoke something that would uh kind of provoke something that would uh kind of provoke people a little bit and and the premise people a little bit and and the premise people a little bit and and the premise of the book is it's supposed to be of the book is it's supposed to be of the book is it's supposed to be like if you read it closely apparently like if you read it closely apparently like if you read it closely apparently it's not as obvious as i as i originally it's not as obvious as i as i originally it's not as obvious as i as i originally thought thought thought but but but it's supposed to be somebody who's fed it's supposed to be somebody who's fed it's supposed to be somebody who's fed up with meetings and and sends a memo up with meetings and and sends a memo up with meetings and and sends a memo out to their staff out to their staff out to their staff that that that read this before our next meeting we're read this before our next meeting we're read this before our next meeting we're not doing things the same anymore i'm not doing things the same anymore i'm not doing things the same anymore i'm tired of this and here's a plan on how tired of this and here's a plan on how tired of this and here's a plan on how to move forward um so it is it kind of to move forward um so it is it kind of to move forward um so it is it kind of the title conforms to the thesis which the title conforms to the thesis which the title conforms to the thesis which is that we should meet less meet only is that we should meet less meet only is that we should meet less meet only for good reasons and really communicate for good reasons and really communicate for good reasons and really communicate via other options um for all the other via other options um for all the other via other options um for all the other stuff very cool um now you also you know stuff very cool um now you also you know stuff very cool um now you also you know you blog you have a blog you're you know you blog you have a blog you're you know you blog you have a blog you're you know you're online where if people want to you're online where if people want to you're online where if people want to reach you online where can they do that reach you online where can they do that reach you online where can they do that yeah they should go to yeah they should go to yeah they should go to dot modernmeetingstandard.com which is dot modernmeetingstandard.com which is dot modernmeetingstandard.com which is my website you can sign up for my my website you can sign up for my my website you can sign up for my newsletter where i send out updates and newsletter where i send out updates and newsletter where i send out updates and articles to the blog and that kind of articles to the blog and that kind of articles to the blog and that kind of thing nice now i don't know if this may thing nice now i don't know if this may thing nice now i don't know if this may be uh this may be giving too much away be uh this may be giving too much away be uh this may be giving too much away but you've got a new book coming out um but you've got a new book coming out um but you've got a new book coming out um are you having the privilege to talk are you having the privilege to talk are you having the privilege to talk about that or is it are we too early about that or is it are we too early about that or is it are we too early sure i mean i i can reveal a little bit sure i mean i i can reveal a little bit sure i mean i i can reveal a little bit about it about it about it the book is on the topic of

  4. the book is on the topic of the book is on the topic of persuadability so there's a million persuadability so there's a million persuadability so there's a million books on how to be more persuasive but i books on how to be more persuasive but i books on how to be more persuasive but i argue in our culture we're actually argue in our culture we're actually argue in our culture we're actually already pretty persuasive what we're already pretty persuasive what we're already pretty persuasive what we're really bad at is being persuadable in really bad at is being persuadable in really bad at is being persuadable in the sense that no one really has a the sense that no one really has a the sense that no one really has a genuine willingness to change their genuine willingness to change their genuine willingness to change their minds anymore you know in politics and minds anymore you know in politics and minds anymore you know in politics and organizations and relationships so what organizations and relationships so what organizations and relationships so what i want to do is i want to try to create i want to do is i want to try to create i want to do is i want to try to create a handbook for how do you change your a handbook for how do you change your a handbook for how do you change your mind you know how do you listen to mind you know how do you listen to mind you know how do you listen to somebody else and decide that you know somebody else and decide that you know somebody else and decide that you know what that's a good idea i should listen what that's a good idea i should listen what that's a good idea i should listen to that um this is you know this to that um this is you know this to that um this is you know this dovetails really well with meetings dovetails really well with meetings dovetails really well with meetings because i feel like because i feel like because i feel like we would have a better we would have we would have a better we would have we would have a better we would have better organizations in a better world better organizations in a better world better organizations in a better world if people would come to meetings with a if people would come to meetings with a if people would come to meetings with a persuadable mindset you know looking to persuadable mindset you know looking to persuadable mindset you know looking to actually say you know what if i hear a actually say you know what if i hear a actually say you know what if i hear a better idea than mine in this room i'm better idea than mine in this room i'm better idea than mine in this room i'm going to change my mind because at the going to change my mind because at the going to change my mind because at the end of the day we you know we're all on end of the day we you know we're all on end of the day we you know we're all on uh on the path towards our missions and uh on the path towards our missions and uh on the path towards our missions and if one idea gets us closer to that if one idea gets us closer to that if one idea gets us closer to that mission faster that's the idea we should mission faster that's the idea we should mission faster that's the idea we should adopt adopt adopt well you're gonna be in for a real treat well you're gonna be in for a real treat well you're gonna be in for a real treat in this course with al al is he pushes me in a that makes me think that pushes me in a that makes me think that pushes me in a new direction that gets me you know new direction that gets me you know new direction that gets me you know stirs a bit of emotion does get me stirs a bit of emotion does get me stirs a bit of emotion does get me thinking like gosh i gotta change thinking like gosh i gotta change thinking like gosh i gotta change something about the way i do uh what i something about the way i do uh what i something about the way i do uh what i do but i think that's super good and so do but i think that's super coming weeks some of the questions we're going to be some of the questions we're going to be some of the questions we're going to be answering is you know how uh do we use answering is you know how uh do we use answering is you know how uh do we use the meeting to officially or to the meeting to officially or to the meeting to officially or to efficiently reach a decision we talk efficiently reach a decision we talk efficiently reach a decision we talk about you know what are the difference about you know what are the difference about you know what are the difference between above the line decisions and between above the line decisions and between above the line decisions and below the line decisions you know how do below the line decisions you know how do below the line decisions you know how do we ensure that meetings don't just we ensure that meetings don't just we ensure that meetings don't just become long monologues i know when we become long monologues i know when we become 7. so i just called up other churches and so i just called up other churches and found someone else to raise money for found someone else to raise money for found someone else to raise money for ladies and gentlemen we are not ready ladies and gentlemen we are not ready ladies and gentlemen we are not ready for this revolution for this revolution for this revolution the world is fundamentally changing the world is fundamentally changing the world is fundamentally changing hyper connectivity hyper competition hyper connectivity hyper competition hyper connectivity hyper competition globalization they're making our world globalization they're making our world globalization they're making our world move faster and faster and faster yet move faster and faster and faster yet move faster and faster and faster yet we're still filing into a meeting room we're still filing into a meeting room we're still filing into a meeting room every single time we need to make a every single time we need to make a every single time we need to make a decision decision decision see for so long we've lived in this see for so long we've lived in this see for so long we've lived in this paradigm where meetings made decisions paradigm where meetings made decisions paradigm where meetings made decisions it worked it worked it worked we got we got to a dodge responsibility we got we got to a dodge responsibility we got we got to a dodge responsibility and it was harder to make mistakes but and it was harder to make mistakes but and it was harder to make mistakes but in our new world in our new world in our new world in our new globalized world meetings in our new globalized world meetings in our new globalized world meetings don't make decisions anymore don't make decisions anymore don't make decisions anymore leaders do leaders make decisions not meetings a 26 leaders make decisions not meetings a 26 year old captain on the station on a year old captain on the station on a year old captain on the station on a small field base on the border of small field base on the border of small field base on the border of afghanistan and pakistan has full afghanistan and pakistan has full afghanistan and pakistan has full authority to order joint fire both authority to order joint fire both authority to order joint fire both artillery and air artillery and air artillery and air full authority is only 26 years old why full authority is only 26 years old why full authority is only 26 years old why because his enemies decentralized because his enemies decentralized because his enemies decentralized the taliban can come at him at any the taliban can come at him at any the taliban can come at him at any second from any moment and he doesn't second from any moment and he doesn't second from any moment and he doesn't have time to wait for his commanders to have time to wait for his commanders to have time to wait for his commanders to have a meeting to tell him what to do have a meeting to tell him what to do have a meeting to tell him what to do he's the one who's closest to the action he's the one who's closest to the action he's the one who's closest to the action he's got the intelligence at his he's got the intelligence at his he's got the intelligence at his fingertips so he orders the fire fingertips so he orders the fire fingertips so he orders the fire meetings don't make decisions meetings don't make decisions meetings don't make decisions leaders do leaders do leaders do just a couple years ago during the just a couple years ago during the just a couple years ago during the height of the credit in the real estate height of the credit in the real estate height of the credit in the real estate bubble tom friedman tells us that the bubble tom friedman tells us that the bubble tom friedman tells us that the lawyers who were getting fired lawyers who were getting fired lawyers who were getting fired were the ones who weren't making were the ones who weren't making were the ones who weren't making mistakes mistakes mistakes the ones who were just doing the work the ones who were just doing the work the ones who were just doing the work and just giving it right back no they and just giving it right back no they and just giving it right back no they needed the lawyers to innovate the

  8. needed the lawyers to innovate the needed the lawyers to innovate the differentiation was so important because differentiation was so important because differentiation was so important because law firms needed to separate themselves law firms needed to separate themselves law firms needed to separate themselves from the competition from the competition from the competition so in order to innovate though you need so in order to innovate though you need so in order to innovate though you need to take a risk to take a risk to take a risk in order to take a risk you have to make in order to take a risk you have to make in order to take a risk you have to make a decision a decision a decision because if your boss is making the because if your boss is making the because if your boss is making the decisions decisions decisions well then he's the one who's taking the well then he's the one who's taking the well then he's the one who's taking the risk and therefore it's his innovation risk and therefore it's his innovation risk and therefore it's his innovation meetings don't make decisions meetings don't make decisions meetings don't make decisions leaders do leaders do leaders do just a couple weeks ago the ragu the just a couple weeks ago the ragu the just a couple weeks ago the ragu the company's famous for the tomato sauce company's famous for the tomato sauce company's famous for the tomato sauce started at messaging random dad bloggers started at messaging random dad bloggers started at messaging random dad bloggers on twitter you guys probably know the on twitter you guys probably know the on twitter you guys probably know the story story story well well well one of those dad bloggers was cece one of those dad bloggers was cece one of those dad bloggers was cece chapman basically they were spamming chapman basically they were spamming chapman basically they were spamming them with this link that was supposed to them with this link that was supposed to them with this link that was supposed to be funny cece chapman didn't find it be funny cece chapman didn't find it be funny cece chapman didn't find it very funny he wrote a post online titled very funny he wrote a post online titled very funny he wrote a post online titled raghu hates dads raghu hates dads raghu hates dads it went of course it went viral created it went of course it went viral created it went of course it went viral created a firestorm online everybody was online a firestorm online everybody was online a firestorm online everybody was online that day criticizing ragu waiting to see that day criticizing ragu waiting to see that day criticizing ragu waiting to see how long it would take them to respond how long it would take them to respond how long it would take them to respond you know how long it took racker to you know how long it took racker to you know how long it took racker to respond respond respond three days three days three days three days to post some pathetic three days to post some pathetic three days to post some pathetic half-witted unapology on some blog half-witted unapology on some blog half-witted unapology on some blog online to me it's funny to speculate how online to me it's funny to speculate how online to me it's funny to speculate how many meetings must have occurred over many meetings must have occurred over many meetings must have occurred over those three days at raghu headquarters those three days at raghu headquarters those three days at raghu headquarters how many meetings of a committee of how many meetings of a committee of how many meetings of a committee of people most of whom probably don't even people most of whom probably don't even people most of whom probably don't even use twitter so so here's the interesting thing to me here's the interesting thing to me here's the interesting thing to me though fascinating thing not one person though fascinating thing not one person though fascinating thing not one person was willing to step up and make a quick was willing to step up and make a quick was willing to step up and make a quick decision now one person at ragu not even decision now one person at ragu not even decision now one person at ragu not even an intern saw what was happening just an intern saw what was happening just an intern saw what was happening just said you know what i'm just gonna post a said you know what i'm just gonna post a said you know what i'm just gonna post a comment comment comment thank you for tuning in to this week's
