one of those books where when you read the title that is where when you read the title that is where when you read the title that is the message of the book um stop the message of the book um stop the message of the book um stop recruiting start retaining it's a recruiting start retaining it's a recruiting start retaining it's a fantastic book a really great read and fantastic book a really great where did that come from H that's a where did that come from H that's a where did that come from H that's a great question um I had always felt like great question um I had always felt like great question um I had always felt like God was calling me to write a book but God was calling me to write a book but God was calling me to write a book but never really felt um like I could just never really felt um like I could just never really felt um like I could just never find the right thing and so um one never find the right thing and so um one never find the right thing and so um one day my friend Darren I actually I was day my friend Darren I actually I was day my friend Darren I actually I was sitting at a diner with a friend and she sitting at a diner with a friend and she sitting at a diner with a friend and she said to me you've got to write a book said to me you've got to write a book said to me you've got to write a book but I never wanted to write a book that but I never wanted to write a book that but I never wanted to write a book that would be self- serving just let me tell would be self- serving just let me tell would be self- serving just let me tell you my story I wanted it to be something you my story I wanted it to be something you my story I wanted it to be something that would be helpful and as I was that would be helpful and as I was that would be helpful and as I was sharing that with her um she said to me sharing that with her um she said to me sharing that with her um she said to me well I looked down at my phone actually well I looked down at my phone actually well I looked down at my phone actually and Darren Kaiser co-author of the book and Darren Kaiser co-author of the book and Darren Kaiser co-author of the book had texted me literally I his text had texted me literally I his text had texted me literally I his text popped up on my phone and said let's popped up on my phone and said let's popped up on my phone and said let's write a book and I just I couldn't write a book and I just I couldn't write a book and I just I couldn't believe it um but that was because he believe it um but that was because he believe it um but that was because he had just finished up his U PhD and he had just finished up his U PhD and he had just finished up his U PhD and he did his thesis on volunteer retention did his thesis on volunteer retention did his thesis on volunteer retention did so much research and he um in his did so much research and he um in his did so much research and he um in his thesis he had a control group and a an thesis he had a control group and a an thesis he had a control group and a an experimental group and I was a part of experimental group and I was a part of experimental group and I was a part of his experimental group I came to his his experimental group I came to his his experimental group I came to his church she is a multi they had a church she is a multi they had a church she is a multi they had a multi-site um campus and I went to the multi-site um campus and I went to the multi-site um campus and I went to the one campus and um did some training with one campus and um did some training with one campus and um did some training with their volunteers some um just their volunteers some um just their volunteers some um just inspirational things and was a part of inspirational things and was a part of inspirational things and was a part of that and he he just said I love your that and he he just said I love your that and he he just said I love your stories let's combine my resar search stories let's combine my resar search stories let's combine my resar search with your stories and your you know with your stories and your you know with your stories and your you know years of experience I've been in years of experience I've been in years of experience I've been in Ministry now for 17 years um and so you

yes thank you so much for did yes thank you so much for did yes thank you so much for that that's great now one of the things that that's great now one of the things that that's great now one of the things that sticks out is this zero recruitment that sticks out is this zero recruitment that sticks out is this zero recruitment model I know that there are church model I know that there are church model I know that there are church leaders that are listening in today that leaders that are listening in today that leaders that are listening in today that would say okay sure if I stop recruiting would say okay sure if I stop recruiting would say okay sure if I stop recruiting my Ministry is going to go careening off my Ministry is going to go careening off my Ministry is going to go careening off a cliff pretty quickly um so I want to a cliff pretty quickly um so I want to a cliff pretty quickly um so I want to dig into that when you say zero dig into that when you say zero dig into that when you say zero recruitment you don't really actually recruitment you don't really actually recruitment you don't really actually mean zero recruit right what do you mean mean zero recruit right what do you mean mean zero recruit right what do you mean by that yeah we do mean zero recruitment by that yeah we do mean zero recruitment by that yeah we do mean zero recruitment but but what we mean is we want to get but but what we mean is we want to get but but what we mean is we want to get to a place where um our volunteers are to a place where um our volunteers are to a place where um our volunteers are doing the recruiting for us because our doing the recruiting for us because our doing the recruiting for us because our volunteer culture is so sticky and so volunteer culture is so sticky and so volunteer culture is so sticky and so irresistible that people they stay and irresistible that people they stay and irresistible that people they stay and they they recruit their friends and they they recruit their friends and they they recruit their friends and great leaders are also developed out of great leaders are also developed out of great leaders are also developed out of that whole process because you're caring that whole process because you're caring that whole process because you're caring for people so so well so yeah it is for people so so well so yeah it is for people so so well so yeah it is possible and you know every time I've possible and you know every time I've possible and you know every time I've spoken at different um conferences and spoken at different um conferences and spoken at different um conferences and Retreats people volunteer leaders Retreats people volunteer leaders Retreats people volunteer leaders constantly say I just I need you to help constantly say I just I need you to help constantly say I just I need you to help me recruit I need you to help me recruit me recruit I need you to help me recruit me recruit I need you to help me recruit and after years of hearing that it and after years of hearing that it and after years of hearing that it really I began to to think about is it really I began to to think about is it really I began to to think about is it really what they is what they need really what they is what they need really what they is what they need recruiting help or do they need to help recruiting help or do they need to help recruiting help or do they need to help they do they need help with their they do they need help with their they do they need help with their culture and so um I and I really believe culture and so um I and I really believe culture and so um I and I really believe the answer is found in culture and the answer is found in culture and the answer is found in culture and there's there's four strategies um that there's there's four strategies um that there's there's four strategies um that we talk about in the book that really do we talk about in the book that really do we talk about in the book that really do help to create an irresistible volunteer help to create an irresistible volunteer help to create an irresistible volunteer culture nice well if you've been around culture nice well if you've been around culture nice well if you've been around on Seminary for a while you know that I on Seminary for a while you know that I on Seminary for a while you know that I like numbered lists so let's start with like numbered lists so let's start with like numbered lists so let's start with number one what is what could we do to number one what is what could we do to number one what is what could we do to really start moving towards um you know really start moving towards um you know really start moving towards um you know zero recruitment uh a zero recruitment zero recruitment uh a zero recruitment zero recruitment uh a zero recruitment model yeah the first thing that we can

model yeah the first thing that we can model yeah the first thing that we can do is um well can I just back up and do is um well can I just back up and do is um well can I just back up and just say the first thing we need to do just say the first thing we need to do just say the first thing we need to do is have a mindset shift um and that's is have a mindset shift um and that's is have a mindset shift um and that's hard to say and I won't try to say that hard to say and I won't try to say that hard to say and I won't try to say that five times five times five times fast dangerous thing to say sometimes fast dangerous thing to say sometimes fast dangerous thing to say sometimes but um sometimes we we view volunteers but um sometimes we we view volunteers but um sometimes we we view volunteers as um numbers we don't mean to but we're as um numbers we don't mean to but we're as um numbers we don't mean to but we're so busy and we're so focused and on a so busy and we're so focused and on a so busy and we're so focused and on a mission that we forget that they're mission that we forget that they're mission that we forget that they're people they're people with stories people they're people with stories people they're people with stories they're gifts right and I believe that they're gifts right and I believe that they're gifts right and I believe that one day we'll stand before a holy God one day we'll stand before a holy God one day we'll stand before a holy God and be held accountable for the way that and be held accountable for the way that and be held accountable for the way that we Steward those gifts and so that's the we Steward those gifts and so that's the we Steward those gifts and so that's the first thing we have to do we have to first thing we have to do we have to first thing we have to do we have to remember that they're people we have to remember that they're people we have to remember that they're people we have to remember that it's so important for us remember that it's so important for us remember that it's so important for us to not just fill volunteer vacancies but to not just fill volunteer vacancies but to not just fill volunteer vacancies but to find volunteers fits so that they can to find volunteers fits so that they can to find volunteers fits so that they can Thrive and not just in their volunteer Thrive and not just in their volunteer Thrive and not just in their volunteer role but in life because when you add role but in life because when you add role but in life because when you add value to people's lives it changes value to people's lives it changes value to people's lives it changes everything and so that's the first thing everything and so that's the first thing everything and so that's the first thing it's just that shift in in perspective it's just that shift in in perspective it's just that shift in in perspective and um having the mentality of not just and um having the mentality of not just and um having the mentality of not just um finding a fit not just finding um finding a fit not just finding um finding a fit not just finding filling a role but finding a fit finding filling a role but finding a fit finding filling a role but finding a fit finding their sweet spot because when you find their sweet spot because when you find their sweet spot because when you find their fit they won't quit so wow there's their fit they won't quit so wow there's their fit they won't quit so wow there's a lot packed in there you know I know I a lot packed in there you know I know I a lot packed in there you know I know I think for churches this is an important think for churches this is an important think for churches this is an important thing for churches to unlock I think thing for churches to unlock I think thing for churches to unlock I think sometimes we look at volunteers as a sometimes we look at volunteers as a sometimes we look at volunteers as a means to an end so we look at them as means to an end so we look at them as means to an end so we look at them as like hey they're going to get a job done like hey they're going to get a job done like hey they're going to get a job done for us now what I've noticed is growing for us now what I've noticed is growing for us now what I've noticed is growing thriving churches look at volunteers as thriving churches look at volunteers as thriving churches look at volunteers as the end that actually this is an the end that actually this is an the end that actually this is an incredible way to develop people and we incredible way to develop people and we incredible way to develop people and we start with how do we help and grow

start with how do we help and grow start with how do we help and grow people through their volunteer people through their volunteer people through their volunteer experience through them engaging with us experience through them engaging with us experience through them engaging with us and that through that then this and that through that then this and that through that then this incredible thing starts to happen where incredible thing starts to happen where incredible thing starts to happen where people actually want to be a part of people actually want to be a part of people actually want to be a part of this rather than seeing this as like this rather than seeing this as like this rather than seeing this as like gosh we need to find people we say how gosh we need to find people we say how gosh we need to find people we say how do we and that that's huge that's a do we and that that's huge that's a do we and that that's huge that's a massive shift I think particularly for massive shift I think particularly for massive shift I think particularly for churches that are growing that's one of churches that are growing that's one of churches that are growing that's one of those mind shifts that you have to make those mind shifts that you have to make those mind shifts that you have to make you have to say how do we use as a as a you have to say how do we use as a as a you have to say how do we use as a as a growing um you know piece so what are growing um you know piece so what are growing um you know piece so what are some practical ways some practical steps some practical ways some practical steps some practical ways some practical steps that we could do even within our church that we could do even within our church that we could do even within our church to begin kind of transitioning that to begin kind of transitioning that to begin kind of transitioning that mindset the first thing we can do is mindset the first thing we can do is mindset the first thing we can do is assess our culture because if I gave you assess our culture because if I gave you assess our culture because if I gave you every volunteer you needed and I found every volunteer you needed and I found every volunteer you needed and I found the perfect fit for all of them if the the perfect fit for all of them if the the perfect fit for all of them if the culture isn't right they're not going to culture isn't right they're not going to culture isn't right they're not going to stick right so we've got to first start stick right so we've got to first start stick right so we've got to first start there and and assess that and in the there and and assess that and in the there and and assess that and in the volunteer in this volunteer project stop volunteer in this volunteer project stop volunteer in this volunteer project stop recruiting start retaining we provide recruiting start retaining we provide recruiting start retaining we provide you with a tool that you can use to for you with a tool that you can use to for you with a tool that you can use to for the leader to assess their and then the leader to assess their and then the leader to assess their and then what's really cool is you send that same what's really cool is you send that same what's really cool is you send that same survey or actually it's a little bit a survey or actually it's a little bit a survey or actually it's a little bit a different variation of it to your different variation of it to your different variation of it to your volunteers and they get to tell you volunteers and they get to tell you volunteers and they get to tell you anonymously what your survey what what anonymously what your survey what what anonymously what your survey what what your culture is really like and then your culture is really like and then your culture is really like and then there's a sync report that actually there's a sync report that actually there's a sync report that actually shows you like where you're doing really shows you like where you're doing really shows you like where you're doing really really well and some areas that you need really well and some areas that you need really well and some areas that you need to focus in and those are the the four to focus in and those are the the four to focus in and those are the the four strategies where you can begin to break strategies where you can begin to break strategies where you can begin to break down and say okay here's where we're down and say okay here's where we're down and say okay here's where we're doing awesome and so celebrate that and doing awesome and so celebrate that and doing awesome and so celebrate that and um but then here's where we could really um but then here's where we could really um but then here's where we could really use some improvement and then we give use some improvement and then we give use some improvement and then we give you prac iCal strategies on how to how you prac iCal strategies on how to how you prac iCal strategies on how to how to make some changes any kind of to make some changes any kind of to make some changes any kind of interesting stories that have come out interesting stories that have come out interesting stories that have come out as you as either you've done that kind as you as either you've done that kind as you as either you've done that kind of sinking up or that you've heard other of sinking up or that you've heard other of sinking up or that you've heard other churches as they've done that as far as

churches as they've done that as far as churches as they've done that as far as thinking up their oh yeah yeah as as thinking up their oh yeah yeah as as thinking up their oh yeah yeah as as they've actually said hey this is what they've actually said hey this is what they've actually said hey this is what we think and then this is what our we think and then this is what our we think and then this is what our people think you know what's the people think you know what's the people think you know what's the difference between those two yeah on a difference between those two yeah on a difference between those two yeah on a personal level there's been times where personal level there's been times where personal level there's been times where I've sent surveys to my volunteers I I've sent surveys to my volunteers I I've sent surveys to my volunteers I thought I was knocking it out of the thought I was knocking it out of the thought I was knocking it out of the park I'm amazing I'm inspiring you know park I'm amazing I'm inspiring you know park I'm amazing I'm inspiring you know like they're having fun it's great and like they're having fun it's great and like they're having fun it's great and early on in Ministry when I was leading early on in Ministry when I was leading early on in Ministry when I was leading Vol my first uh Team of volunteers I Vol my first uh Team of volunteers I Vol my first uh Team of volunteers I really did I thought man I've just I've really did I thought man I've just I've really did I thought man I've just I've got this Vision they're having fun this got this Vision they're having fun this got this Vision they're having fun this is awesome and then I sent a survey and is awesome and then I sent a survey and is awesome and then I sent a survey and I got some feedback that yeah you're fun I got some feedback that yeah you're fun I got some feedback that yeah you're fun and you're inspiring but you know you're and you're inspiring but you know you're and you're inspiring but you know you're not really telling me what you want me not really telling me what you want me not really telling me what you want me to do it's not clear to me like what do to do it's not clear to me like what do to do it's not clear to me like what do you want from me how do I know I'm you want from me how do I know I'm you want from me how do I know I'm winning and that was eye openening for winning and that was eye openening for winning and that was eye openening for me and that was an opportunity for me to me and that was an opportunity for me to me and that was an opportunity for me to say I'm not going to use my personality say I'm not going to use my personality say I'm not going to use my personality as an excuse to not value people and so as an excuse to not value people and so as an excuse to not value people and so things really began to change and shift things really began to change and shift things really began to change and shift and we hear the same thing from church and we hear the same thing from church and we hear the same thing from church leaders that that take the survey the leaders that that take the survey the leaders that that take the survey the zero risk um survey or zero risk I'm zero risk um survey or zero risk I'm zero risk um survey or zero risk I'm sorry the um zero model recruitment s sorry the um zero model recruitment s sorry the um zero model recruitment s surve survey and they say that um it is surve survey and they say that um it is surve survey and they say that um it is surprising to them because it's fresh surprising to them because it's fresh surprising to them because it's fresh perspective you know and we all need perspective you know and we all need perspective you know and we all need that we need to give our volunteers a that we need to give our volunteers a that we need to give our volunteers a voice they need to be heard because when voice they need to be heard because when voice they need to be heard because when they feel heard it's another thing that they feel heard it's another thing that they feel heard it's another thing that it adds value and they they stick I know it adds value and they they stick I know it adds value and they they stick I know I I know you know big part of leadership I I know you know big part of leadership I I know you know big part of leadership the first step of leadership has been the first step of leadership has been the first step of leadership has been said actually is to to Define reality said actually is to to Define reality said actually is to to Define reality like we have to start with where are like we have to start with where are like we have to start with where are things actually today I think sometimes things actually today I think sometimes things actually today I think sometimes we and sometimes particularly leaders we and sometimes particularly leaders we and sometimes particularly leaders whoo and obviously I sense and I you whoo and obviously I sense and I you whoo and obviously I sense and I you tell that story in the book and I was tell that story in the book and I was tell that story in the book and I was like oh I can resonate with that it's

but what am I supposed to do I'm like I but what am I supposed to do I'm like I but what am I supposed to do I'm like I think I've done that um but I think think I've done that um but I think think I've done that um but I think particularly for leaders who are more particularly for leaders who are more particularly for leaders who are more Visionary and who are more you know um Visionary and who are more you know um Visionary and who are more you know um kind of future oriented we can we can kind of future oriented we can we can kind of future oriented we can we can kid ourselves into saying no it's a kid ourselves into saying no it's a kid ourselves into saying no it's a great experience um because we're we're great experience um because we're we're great experience um because we're we're living in this kind of Dreamland and we living in this kind of Dreamland and we living in this kind of Dreamland and we may not that may not actually be may not that may not actually be may not that may not actually be connected to reality and so obviously connected to reality and so obviously connected to reality and so obviously you know taking even taking a survey you know taking even taking a survey you know taking even taking a survey that's you provide in your book is a that's you provide in your book is a that's you provide in your book is a great starting point for people now that great starting point for people now that great starting point for people now that has to move from into some sort of has to move from into some sort of has to move from into some sort of process I'm assuming has to move into process I'm assuming has to move into process I'm assuming has to move into like how do we actually step through you like how do we actually step through you like how do we actually step through you know kind of ensuring that there you know kind of ensuring that there you know kind of ensuring that there you know is a kind of a great service know is a kind of a great service know is a kind of a great service experience for people what are you doing experience for people what are you doing experience for people what are you doing at GT to kind of help that well we have at GT to kind of help that well we have at GT to kind of help that well we have there's four strategies and so I'll go there's four strategies and so I'll go there's four strategies and so I'll them down but um celebrate their significance is the first one the their significance is the first one the their significance is the first one the next one is providing first class next one is providing first class next one is providing first class support for people um fuel meaningful support for people um fuel meaningful support for people um fuel meaningful connections and then the last one is connections and then the last one is connections and then the last one is Empower their P passions okay and so um Empower their P passions okay and so um Empower their P passions okay and so um I know for me as a new volunteer in this I know for me as a new volunteer in this I know for me as a new volunteer in this church I came from a an unchurched church I came from a an unchurched church I came from a an unchurched background I mean crazy crazy childhood background I mean crazy crazy childhood background I mean crazy crazy childhood and um got saved in my early 20s and and um got saved in my early 20s and and um got saved in my early 20s and started coming to GT church and I was started coming to GT church and I was started coming to GT church and I was lost I I hid in the back for about a lost I I hid in the back for about a lost I I hid in the back for about a year and a half just because I was hurt year and a half just because I was hurt year and a half just because I was hurt and I just needed to heal and then and I just needed to heal and then and I just needed to heal and then somebody gave me the opportunity to tap somebody gave me the opportunity to tap somebody gave me the opportunity to tap me on the shoulder and they said hey we me on the shoulder and they said hey we me on the shoulder and they said hey we would love for you to be a part of kids would love for you to be a part of kids would love for you to be a part of kids ministry we know you like kids and we ministry we know you like kids and we ministry we know you like kids and we know you like to cook um and so someone know you like to cook um and so someone know you like to cook um and so someone was was watching someone was being was was watching someone was being was was watching someone was being intentional in that and then what

intentional in that and then what intentional in that and then what happened was through a series of months happened was through a series of months happened was through a series of months and then years of course somebody came and then years of course somebody came and then years of course somebody came alongside of me and they provided those alongside of me and they provided those alongside of me and they provided those four things for me they came alongside four things for me they came alongside four things for me they came alongside and they said you know I see something and they said you know I see something and they said you know I see something in you and I want to connect your gifts in you and I want to connect your gifts in you and I want to connect your gifts in the way that God has uniquely wired in the way that God has uniquely wired in the way that God has uniquely wired you even in your mess cuz it was part you even in your mess cuz it was part you even in your mess cuz it was part it's the number one Catalyst for it's the number one Catalyst for it's the number one Catalyst for spiritual grow growth I really do spiritual grow growth I really do spiritual grow growth I really do believe that when we step out in believe that when we step out in believe that when we step out in Ministry um and so she believed in me Ministry um and so she believed in me Ministry um and so she believed in me she gave me that opportunity to connect she gave me that opportunity to connect she gave me that opportunity to connect my gifts to the vision of this church my gifts to the vision of this church my gifts to the vision of this church and how God wanted to use me to fulfill and how God wanted to use me to fulfill and how God wanted to use me to fulfill the vision of the church everything I the vision of the church everything I the vision of the church everything I did from cooking with kids in a kitchen did from cooking with kids in a kitchen did from cooking with kids in a kitchen um to you know eventually preaching you um to you know eventually preaching you um to you know eventually preaching you know and so it's important that we we know and so it's important that we we know and so it's important that we we provide that significant opportunity for provide that significant opportunity for provide that significant opportunity for people to be a part of something so much people to be a part of something so much people to be a part of something so much bigger than themselves they want that bigger than themselves they want that bigger than themselves they want that they crave that they crave that they crave that people have jobs you know and so they're people have jobs you know and so they're people have jobs you know and so they're looking for meaning and so that was huge looking for meaning and so that was huge looking for meaning and so that was huge and then she also provided that support and then she also provided that support and then she also provided that support by making sure that I had all the tools by making sure that I had all the tools by making sure that I had all the tools I needed to be successful um volunteers I needed to be successful um volunteers I needed to be successful um volunteers go ahead what does that look like when go ahead what does that look like when go ahead what does that look like when you talk about first class support it's you talk about first class support it's you talk about first class support it's one thing to provide support what would one thing to provide support what would one thing to provide support what would you say differentiates between kind of you say differentiates between kind of you say differentiates between kind of first class support and just average first class support and just average first class support and just average support sometimes we just throw people support sometimes we just throw people support sometimes we just throw people into a role we don't we don't take them into a role we don't we don't take them into a role we don't we don't take them through a healthy training process we through a healthy training process we through a healthy training process we don't um take the time to really figure don't um take the time to really figure don't um take the time to really figure out out how they're wired we don't um out out how they're wired we don't um out out how they're wired we don't um give them parameters we don't sometimes give them parameters we don't sometimes give them parameters we don't sometimes give them even budgets um you know like give them even budgets um you know like give them even budgets um you know like this is how much you can spend to do this is how much you can spend to do this is how much you can spend to do what you need to do or um we don't what you need to do or um we don't what you need to do or um we don't appreciate them the way that sometimes

walk through halls and we go hey great walk through halls and we go hey great walk through halls and we go hey great job so glad you're here you know you're job so glad you're here you know you're job so glad you're here you know you're awesome but it's that unique awesome but it's that unique awesome but it's that unique appreciation it's figuring out I we do appreciation it's figuring out I we do appreciation it's figuring out I we do something with our volunteers called something with our volunteers called something with our volunteers called what floats your boat I think it was a what floats your boat I think it was a what floats your boat I think it was a Craig jtil thing years I had learned Craig jtil thing years I had learned Craig jtil thing years I had learned where we have a list of questions we where we have a list of questions we where we have a list of questions we give to our volunteers early on to give to our volunteers early on to give to our volunteers early on to figure out what they like you know figure out what they like you know figure out what they like you know what's your favorite drink at Starbucks what's your favorite drink at Starbucks what's your favorite drink at Starbucks you know tell us about your family tell you know tell us about your family tell you know tell us about your family tell us your favorite dut things like that us your favorite dut things like that us your favorite dut things like that that we're able to then when we want to that we're able to then when we want to that we're able to then when we want to appreciate them we can do it in a unique appreciate them we can do it in a unique appreciate them we can do it in a unique way that resonates with who they way that resonates with who they way that resonates with who they uniquely are right that's so so uniquely are right that's so so uniquely are right that's so so important absolutely that that's uh important absolutely that that's uh important absolutely that that's uh that's fantastic um when you talk about that's fantastic um when you talk about that's fantastic um when you talk about meaningful connections you know trying meaningful connections you know trying meaningful connections you know trying to get people plugged in um you know to get people plugged in um you know to get people plugged in um you know what does that look like how how are you what does that look like how how are you what does that look like how how are you doing in that in your ministry doing in that in your ministry doing in that in your ministry yeah there's a couple of different yeah there's a couple of different yeah there's a couple of different things that we do there because again we things that we do there because again we things that we do there because again we can just throw people into roles um and can just throw people into roles um and can just throw people into roles um and I was guilty of this years ago just like I was guilty of this years ago just like I was guilty of this years ago just like okay here's here's what you need to do okay here's here's what you need to do okay here's here's what you need to do go do it and then yeah and then one day go do it and then yeah and then one day go do it and then yeah and then one day I remember saying to um some of my my I I remember saying to um some of my my I I remember saying to um some of my my I asking a question to my volunteers and asking a question to my volunteers and asking a question to my volunteers and it became very apparent they didn't even it became very apparent they didn't even it became very apparent they didn't even know each other like they were serving know each other like they were serving know each other like they were serving with each other every weekend and they with each other every weekend and they with each other every weekend and they didn't even know each other and so we didn't even know each other and so we didn't even know each other and so we started to huddle up our teams we started to huddle up our teams we started to huddle up our teams we started to get them together 30 minutes started to get them together 30 minutes started to get them together 30 minutes before um each service and I know know before um each service and I know know before um each service and I know know like for leaders that 30 minutes what we like for leaders that 30 minutes what we like for leaders that 30 minutes what we can't even get our volte to come on time can't even get our volte to come on time can't even get our volte to come on time yes um our I would say yes um our I would say yes um our I would say 90 I would say about 90% of our 90 I would say about 90% of our 90 I would say about 90% of our volunteers come 30 minutes early to volunteers come 30 minutes early to volunteers come 30 minutes early to huddle up with one another because it's huddle up with one another because it's huddle up with one another because it's meaningful we share prayer requests

Vision we give like the last minute you Vision we give like the last minute you Vision we give like the last minute you know changes for the day or things they know changes for the day or things they know changes for the day or things they need to know we pray together and then need to know we pray together and then need to know we pray together and then we encourage like we're going to do a we encourage like we're going to do a we encourage like we're going to do a bonfire at the end of this month one of bonfire at the end of this month one of bonfire at the end of this month one of our teams 100 people in their families our teams 100 people in their families our teams 100 people in their families are to come out and we're going to just are to come out and we're going to just are to come out and we're going to just have fun yes um it's important to have fun yes um it's important to have fun yes um it's important to remember that people already have jobs remember that people already have jobs remember that people already have jobs yes so you've got to make it fun right yes so you've got to make it fun right yes so you've got to make it fun right You' got to make it fun you've got to You' got to make it fun you've got to You' got to make it fun you've got to you got to give volunteers that sense of you got to give volunteers that sense of you got to give volunteers that sense of I belong here I'm not just a number I'm I belong here I'm not just a number I'm I belong here I'm not just a number I'm not on an island but I actually belong not on an island but I actually belong not on an island but I actually belong here and there's ways that that we can here and there's ways that that we can here and there's ways that that we can definitely do that I know for us at at definitely do that I know for us at at definitely do that I know for us at at our church um one of the things I've our church um one of the things I've our church um one of the things I've said to our leaders all the time is said to our leaders all the time is said to our leaders all the time is listen we need our people I obviously listen we need our people I obviously listen we need our people I obviously say this to staff um you know we need say this to staff um you know we need say this to staff um you know we need our people to do a task but what they our people to do a task but what they our people to do a task but what they want us what they want out of it is want us what they want out of it is want us what they want out of it is relationship yeah and and we have to relationship yeah and and we have to relationship yeah and and we have to make sure that we're baking into the make sure that we're baking into the make sure that we're baking into the process an opportunity for them to get process an opportunity for them to get process an opportunity for them to get to know each other for us a big part of to know each other for us a big part of to know each other for us a big part of the way we do that is we actually on if the way we do that is we actually on if the way we do that is we actually on if you serve on Sundays at any of our you serve on Sundays at any of our you serve on Sundays at any of our campuses we're going to provide you a campuses we're going to provide you a campuses we're going to provide you a meal so we actually serve breakfast and meal so we actually serve breakfast and meal so we actually serve breakfast and lunch um well breakfast at all our lunch um well breakfast at all our lunch um well breakfast at all our campuses and well actually all our campuses and well actually all our campuses and well actually all our campuses we serve lunch too um some campuses we serve lunch too um some campuses we serve lunch too um some people stay for both and it's not an people stay for both and it's not an people stay for both and it's not an insignificant expense it's it's a lot of insignificant expense it's it's a lot of insignificant expense it's it's a lot of it's a in fact we're in budgeting season it's a in fact we're in budgeting season it's a in fact we're in budgeting season right now as we're looking to next year right now as we're looking to next year right now as we're looking to next year and every year it comes up again it's and every year it comes up again it's and every year it comes up again it's like gosh do we really want to spend all like gosh do we really want to spend all like gosh do we really want to spend all this money on feeding people but for me this money on feeding people but for me this money on feeding people but for me what it it really drives to this what it it really drives to this what it it really drives to this meaningful connections piece that we meaningful connections piece that we meaningful connections piece that we every week we're providing an every week we're providing an every week we're providing an opportunity for our people to sit down opportunity for our people to sit down opportunity for our people to sit down and connect with each other and talk

and connect with each other and talk and connect with each other and talk with each other um and build with each other um and build with each other um and build relationship and friendship over you relationship and friendship over you relationship and friendship over you know uh you know ham and egg and cheese know uh you know ham and egg and cheese know uh you know ham and egg and cheese sandwich you know and that's it's sandwich you know and that's it's sandwich you know and that's it's significant and and I think for leaders significant and and I think for leaders significant and and I think for leaders we can ignore those things because we we can ignore those things because we we can ignore those things because we think but that doesn't help us ensure think but that doesn't help us ensure think but that doesn't help us ensure that they show up on time or that that they show up on time or that that they show up on time or that doesn't help us ensure that they know doesn't help us ensure that they know doesn't help us ensure that they know what they're supposed to do in kids well what they're supposed to do in kids well what they're supposed to do in kids well what it does over the Long Haul as they what it does over the Long Haul as they what it does over the Long Haul as they develop relationship um for sure you develop relationship um for sure you develop relationship um for sure you know with with people the fourth know with with people the fourth know with with people the fourth category you talked about was Empower category you talked about was Empower category you talked about was Empower their passions um don't we just need their passions um don't we just need their passions um don't we just need them to do stuff for us why are we them to do stuff for us why are we them to do stuff for us why are we empowering their passions obviously I'm empowering their passions obviously I'm empowering their passions obviously I'm being factious tell me about uh you know being factious tell me about uh you know being factious tell me about uh you know part part four really here yeah so many part part four really here yeah so many part part four really here yeah so many times if we don't give our volunteers times if we don't give our volunteers times if we don't give our volunteers parameters if we if we're not clear on parameters if we if we're not clear on parameters if we if we're not clear on what our vision and our strategy is and what our vision and our strategy is and what our vision and our strategy is and what the win statement is for for that what the win statement is for for that what the win statement is for for that Ministry um they'll create their own and Ministry um they'll create their own and Ministry um they'll create their own and that's a dangerous place to be and so we that's a dangerous place to be and so we that's a dangerous place to be and so we want to empower people with the tools want to empower people with the tools want to empower people with the tools that they need yes we want to give them that they need yes we want to give them that they need yes we want to give them the parameters and then we want to set the parameters and then we want to set the parameters and then we want to set them free to lead we don't want to them free to lead we don't want to them free to lead we don't want to micromanage right they they're all micromanage right they they're all micromanage right they they're all unique they have great personalities and unique they have great personalities and unique they have great personalities and gifts that are all unique to them and so gifts that are all unique to them and so gifts that are all unique to them and so we want to be sure that they're able to we want to be sure that they're able to we want to be sure that they're able to to we want to set them free to be able to we want to set them free to be able to we want to set them free to be able to to lead and and minister in their to to lead and and minister in their to to lead and and minister in their unique way but within the parameters unique way but within the parameters unique way but within the parameters that we set for them so that they don't that we set for them so that they don't that we set for them so that they don't create their own just creates a much create their own just creates a much create their own just creates a much healthier culture and environment healthier culture and environment healthier culture and environment fantastic there's a lot we could cover just incredible everything is bigger better incredible everything is bigger better incredible everything is bigger better cleaner food was amazing um yeah so that cleaner food was amazing um yeah so safari in the masam mara reserve and oh my goodness oh masam mara reserve and oh my goodness oh masam mara reserve and oh my goodness oh very cool very cool well we could geek very cool very cool well we could geek very cool very cool well we could geek out about that I was on Safari last out about that I was on Safari last out about that I was on Safari last summer in Rwanda in akagera and it was summer in Rwanda in akagera and it was summer in Rwanda in akagera and it was same I put it up there with one of my same I put it up there with one of my same I put it up there with one of my top five
