churches they really deal with kind of a churches they really deal with kind of a cliff at the end of each one of those cliff at the end of each one of those cliff at the end of each one of those it's like they have a certain number of it's like they have a certain number of it's like they have a certain number of you know elementary students and then you know elementary students and then you know elementary students and then not all those students convert into high not all those students convert into high not all those students convert into high school and then not all those steps to school and then not all those steps to school and then not all those steps to students convert into college and then students convert into college and then students convert into college and then there seems to be a huge drop-off and a there seems to be a huge drop-off and a there seems to be a huge drop-off and a lot of churches from college into adult lot of churches from college into adult lot of churches from college into adult ministry ya know and there's a lot of ministry ya know and there's a lot of ministry ya know and there's a lot of fear around like Millennials and like fear around like Millennials and like fear around like Millennials and like what are we doing to reach them and so what are we doing to reach them and so what are we doing to reach them and so why don't we talk about that why don't we talk about that why don't we talk about that particularly that age group I know your particularly that age group I know your particularly that age group I know your dance a pretty innovative cool stuff dance a pretty innovative cool stuff dance a pretty innovative cool stuff with the college age group I wonder if with the college age group I wonder if with the college age group I wonder if you could tell us a little bit about you could tell us a little bit about you could tell us a little bit about that yeah so I'll give a little bit of that yeah so I'll give a little bit of that yeah so I'll give a little bit of background as far as what we've seen background as far as what we've seen background as far as what we've seen well we came over when we came to well we came over when we came to well we came over when we came to greensboro we planted mercy who we knew greensboro we planted mercy who we knew greensboro we planted mercy who we knew that there were colleges in the area you that there were colleges in the area you that there were colleges in the area you know when you put on your prospectus know when you put on your prospectus know when you put on your prospectus it's you're supposed to put their it's you're supposed to put their it's you're supposed to put their college students right that's part of college students right that's part of college students right that's part of your church plenty deal and so that we your church plenty deal and so that we your church plenty deal and so that we knew that there was I think 80 plus knew that there was I think 80 plus knew that there was I think 80 plus thousand college students in the tribe thousand college students in the tribe thousand college students in the tribe greater triad area of North Carolina but greater triad area of North Carolina but greater triad area of North Carolina but as far as reaching certain campuses we as far as reaching certain campuses we as far as reaching certain campuses we just thought that there was one just thought that there was one just thought that there was one primarily here in Greensboro and then primarily here in Greensboro and then primarily here in Greensboro and then over the course of these four years we over the course of these four years we over the course of these four years we have seen eight different campuses in have seen eight different campuses in have seen eight different campuses in the triad area represented weekly at the triad area represented weekly at the triad area represented weekly at mercy hill which we didn't plan on that mercy hill which we didn't plan on that mercy hill which we didn't plan on that and so we have close to 400 college and so we have close to 400 college and so we have close to 400 college students now coming well to Mercy Hill students now coming well to Mercy Hill students now coming well to Mercy Hill which is just pretty pretty incredible which is just pretty pretty incredible which is just pretty pretty incredible and you know that's that that's kind of and you know that's that that's kind of and you know that's that that's kind of what is it was put in our lap and I what is it was put in our lap and I what is it was put in our lap and I think early on as a church when we think early on as a church when we think early on as a church when we started seeing college students show up started seeing college students show up started seeing college students show up we didn't know exactly what to do yeah

we didn't know exactly what to do yeah we didn't know exactly what to do yeah and so we just kind of did what we and so we just kind of did what we and so we just kind of did what we thought you were supposed to do which is thought you were supposed to do which is thought you were supposed to do which is you just kind of put on an event for you just kind of put on an event for you just kind of put on an event for college students and what we realized college students and what we realized college students and what we realized early on it very early on you know the early on it very early on you know the early on it very early on you know the first year year and a half of our first year year and a half of our first year year and a half of our churches we're really good at the churches we're really good at the churches we're really good at the organized part we can put on a good organized part we can put on a good organized part we can put on a good structured event or college students and structured event or college students and structured event or college students and you know we're seeing costumes come you know we're seeing costumes come you know we're seeing costumes come through the front door we're opening up through the front door we're opening up through the front door we're opening up a door for college students to come in a door for college students to come in a door for college students to come in problem was I think what we realized is problem was I think what we realized is problem was I think what we realized is that we were leaving the back mmm door that we were leaving the back mmm door that we were leaving the back mmm door open and and I don't mean that as in open and and I don't mean that as in open and and I don't mean that as in college students for coming and leaving college students for coming and leaving college students for coming and leaving the church I just mean they were coming the church I just mean they were coming the church I just mean they were coming and they weren't meaningfully getting and they weren't meaningfully getting and they weren't meaningfully getting connected to the church and that and so connected to the church and that and so connected to the church and that and so I remember our lead pastor asked me one I remember our lead pastor asked me one I remember our lead pastor asked me one day he said min he said the events great day he said min he said the events great day he said min he said the events great he said but how many of these students he said but how many of these students he said but how many of these students do you actually know and and I had to do do you actually know and and I had to do do you actually know and and I had to do an honest evaluation I realized mana an honest evaluation I realized mana an honest evaluation I realized mana we're not really relationally connected we're not really relationally connected we're not really relationally connected and so we had a lot of students here but and so we had a lot of students here but and so we had a lot of students here but in terms of meaningful connection we in terms of meaningful connection we in terms of meaningful connection we just weren't really seeing it so we just weren't really seeing it so we just weren't really seeing it so we realized that point we can had to make a realized that point we can had to make a realized that point we can had to make a so so that's that's kind of the so so that's that's kind of the so so that's that's kind of the story of how we what we've seen mm-hmm story of how we what we've seen mm-hmm story of how we what we've seen mm-hmm well I think she's probably a lot of well I think she's probably a lot of well I think she's probably a lot of people are listening in that have a people are listening in that have a people are listening in that have a similar feeling about college students similar feeling about college students similar feeling about college students maybe and and we may think of it it's maybe and and we may think of it it's maybe and and we may think of it it's just like a stage of life thing right just like a stage of life thing right just like a stage of life thing right where it's like you know students are where it's like you know students are where it's like you know students are there they're self-absorbed they're there they're self-absorbed they're there they're self-absorbed they're worrying about their world they've got worrying about their world they've got worrying about their world they've got exams coming up there always and so so exams coming up there always and so so exams coming up there always and so so then we don't take an effort to say hey then we don't take an effort to say hey then we don't take an effort to say hey how do we get them connected and so we

say hey you know you've got you know say hey you know you've got you know say hey you know you've got you know we're just glad to see you every once in we're just glad to see you every once in we're just glad to see you every once in a while and and we don't connect them a while and and we don't connect them a while and and we don't connect them but what have you done to try to see but what have just went back to the drawing board and just went back to the drawing board and just went back to the drawing board and we reevaluate it and really kind of we reevaluate it and really kind of we that he did about heard that the podcast that he did about us being simple church and we just kind us being simple church and we just kind us being simple church and we just kind of went back to the need to keep it simple and so we just started kind of slashing and so we just started kind of slashing and so we just started kind of slashing some stuff we ended up slashing our some stuff we ended up slashing our some stuff we ended up slashing our College event and and we basically said College event and and we basically said College event and and we basically said hey we're going to we're going to make hey we're going to we're going to make hey we're going to we're going to make sure that the students know that the big sure that the students know that the big sure that the students know that the big thing every week is our weekend thing every week is our weekend thing every week is our weekend gathering and then we want to assimilate gathering and then we want to assimilate gathering and then we want to assimilate them into small group ministry just like them into small group ministry just like them into small group ministry just like the rest of the church and so that was the rest of the church and so that was the rest of the church and so that was it that that's when people ask us about it that that's when people ask us about it that that's when people ask us about what we're doing to reach college what we're doing to reach college what we're doing to reach college students and we end up telling them students and we end up telling them students and we end up telling them they're kind of like yeah but what else they're kind of like yeah but what else they're kind of like yeah but what else and and and but that's the for us it's a and and and but that's the for us it's a and and and but that's the for us it's a very simple model of helping our very simple model of helping our very simple model of helping our students to recognize what what the big students to recognize what what the big students to recognize what what the big thing is and that is gathering as a thing is and that is gathering as a thing is and that is gathering as a local body every week and then getting local body every week and then getting local body every week and then getting them meaningfully connected into small them meaningfully connected into small them meaningfully connected into small groups so for us it was slashing things groups so for us it was slashing things groups so for us it was slashing things taking events off the schedule being taking events off the schedule being taking events off the schedule being strategic in the way that we put events strategic in the way that we put events strategic in the way that we put events on the schedule and so we just went on the schedule and so we just went on the schedule and so we just went through the list of things and we went through the list of things and we went through the list of things and we went through the calendar and we just say hey

through the calendar and we just say hey through the calendar and we just say hey we're going to try to keep this thing as we're going to try to keep this thing as we're going to try to keep this thing as simple as possible but then the second simple as possible but then the second simple as possible but then the second thing is we were just super intentional thing is we were just super intentional thing is we were just super intentional we realize kind of the if you build it we realize kind of the if you build it we realize kind of the if you build it they will come principal I just I don't they will come principal I just I don't they will come principal I just I don't think it works all that well right in think it works all that well right in think it works all that well right in the sense that maybe they will come but the sense that maybe they will come but the sense that maybe they will come but we were building it they were coming but we were building it they were coming but we were building it they were coming but no one was getting meaningfully no one was getting meaningfully no one was getting meaningfully connected so you know you might build it connected so you know you might build it connected so you know you might build it they might come but how are people they might come but how are people they might come but how are people getting or how our students and getting or how our students and getting or how our students and Millennials in particular how are they Millennials in particular how are they Millennials in particular how are they getting plugged in beyond that so we getting plugged in beyond that so we getting plugged in beyond that so we just said hey we need to reevaluate the just said hey we need to reevaluate the just said hey we need to reevaluate the intentionality with which we're going intentionality with which we're going intentionality with which we're going about this you know I think of it one about this you know I think of it one about this you know I think of it one story in particular its kind of had a story in particular its kind of had a story in particular its kind of had a goat oh but we've seen it happen time goat oh but we've seen it happen time goat oh but we've seen it happen time and time again of a student at a Sorak and time again of a student at a Sorak and time again of a student at a Sorak Lee black college here in Greensboro and Lee black college here in Greensboro and Lee black college here in Greensboro and really it was just him he'd start he was really it was just him he'd start he was really it was just him he'd start he was the only student from this school and the only student from this school and the only student from this school and wow we just realized hey we're not going wow we just realized hey we're not going wow we just realized hey we're not going to reach this school by building a big to reach this school by building a big to reach this school by building a big event to try see students come and we event to try see students come and we event to try see students come and we just kind of rallied around him and just kind of rallied around him and just kind of rallied around him and we're super intentional four six eight we're super intentional four six eight we're super intentional four six eight months with him and and out of that we months with him and and out of that we months with him and and out of that we have just seen tremendous growth from have just seen tremendous growth from have just seen tremendous growth from that school in particular and so it just that school in particular and so it just that school in particular and so it just reminded us about the intentionality reminded us about the intentionality reminded us about the intentionality piece practically with that to you know piece practically with that to you know piece practically with that to you know intentionally meant we needed to get a intentionally meant we needed to get a intentionally meant we needed to get a database we were we were using google database we were we were using google database we were we were using google and awesome things that Google provides and awesome things that Google provides and awesome things that Google provides but we at that point right two years but we at that point right two years but we at that point right two years into our church we ended up getting into our church we ended up getting into our church we ended up getting fellowship one yep which was a super fellowship one yep which was a super fellowship one yep which was a super practical way for us as a church but practical way for us as a church but practical way for us as a church but then even as a college ministry and then even as a college ministry and then even as a college ministry and student ministry to be intentional

where they were in the process and know where they were in the process and know where they were in the process of getting plugged in and so that was of getting plugged in and so that was of getting about you know I know the Bobby talked about you know I know the Bobby talked about this too but we've gained a lot from this too but we've gained a lot from this too but we've gained a lot from Larry Osborne and one thing that he says Larry Osborne and one thing that he says Larry Osborne and one thing that he says is that people come because of quality is that people come because of quality is that people come because of quality and options but they stay because of and options but they stay because of and options but they stay because of relationships and so we realized man the got that you know opening the piece we got that you know opening the piece we got that you know opening the door up creating a really structured door up creating a really structured door up creating a really structured event or or program a system what we event or or program a system what we event or or program a system what we have that part what the part that we have that part what the part that you doing something specifically for you doing something specifically for college students that looks a little college students that looks a little college students that looks a little different or is you just kind of calling different or is you just kind of calling different or is you just kind of calling out to students hey make sure you get out to students hey make sure you get out to students hey make sure you get plugged into a group this is how you get plugged into a group this is how you get plugged into a group this is how you get plugged in are they are they student plugged in are they are they student plugged in are they are they student specific groups or are you trying to go specific groups or are you trying to go specific groups or are you trying to go by gino geographical or how does that by gino geographical or how does that by gino geographical or how does that work yeah yeah so um yes yes and no we work yeah yeah so um yes yes and no we work yeah yeah so um yes yes and no we we do student specific groups so we have we do student specific groups so we have we do student specific groups so we have college groups that are specifically college groups that are specifically college groups that are specifically students but for the overall similar students but for the overall similar students but for the overall similar same process again in terms of keeping same process again in terms of keeping same process again in terms of keeping it simple and not siloing our ministry it simple and not siloing our ministry it simple and not siloing our ministry yep because I think that's also a danger yep because I think that's also a danger yep because I think that's also a danger whether it be student ministry kids whether it be student ministry kids whether it be student ministry kids ministry or college ministry there's ministry or college ministry there's ministry or college ministry there's always the danger of being siloed from always the danger of being siloed from always the danger of being siloed from what the rest of the church is doing we what the rest of the church is doing we what the rest of the church is doing we just said no that the first step for just said no that the first step for just said no that the first step for students just like with anyone else you students just like with anyone else you students just like with anyone else you know whether they're millennial whether know whether they're millennial whether know whether they're millennial whether they're in their 60s is that that they're in their 60s is that that they're in their 60s is that that weekend and so our simulation process weekend and so our simulation process weekend and so our simulation process looks the same for them now coming out looks the same for them now coming out looks the same for them now coming out of that we give the students the option of that we give the students the option of that we give the students the option to be a part of a college specific group to be a part of a college specific group to be a part of a college specific group or they can be part of a or they can be part of a or they can be part of a multi-generational group and so in that multi-generational group and so in that multi-generational group and so in that eighty percent of college students that eighty percent of college students that eighty percent of college students that we have in small group a percentage of we have in small group a percentage of we have in small group a percentage of them are in multi-generational groups them are in multi-generational groups them are in multi-generational groups because they feel like they would really because they feel like they would really because they feel like they would really love to be with people that are love to be with people that are love to be with people that are different than them at different life different than them at different life different than them at different life stage and and then we have a majority of stage and and then we have a majority of stage and and then we have a majority of them that are in college specific groups them that are in college specific groups them that are in college specific groups but we've again we just try to funnel it but we've again we just try to funnel it but we've again we just try to funnel it all together in terms of keeping it all together in terms of keeping it all together in terms of keeping it simple note oddly say hey we're not simple note oddly say hey we're not simple note oddly say hey we're not going to create all these different going to create all these different going to create all these different steps for different people we're going steps for different people we're going steps for different people we're going to streamline everything so what we say to streamline everything so what we say to streamline everything so what we say to one we're saying to the other and the

to one we're saying to the other and the to one we're saying to the other and the great thing with that is when our lead great thing with that is when our lead great thing with that is when our lead pastor steps up on Sunday and makes the pastor steps up on Sunday and makes the pastor steps up on Sunday and makes the application in a sermon about getting in application in a sermon about getting in application in a sermon about getting in a small group in our college students a small group in our college students a small group in our college students they're not hearing something completely they're not hearing something completely they're not hearing something completely different than what the rest of the different than what the rest of the different than what the rest of the people are hearing the application is people are hearing the application is people are hearing the application is the same for them the next step is the the same for them the next step is the the same for them the next step is the same for them so and again I think same for them so and again I think same for them so and again I think that's been super helpful in seeing that's been super helpful in seeing that's been super helpful in seeing those students actually get connected those students actually get connected those students actually get connected organically in closing that back door organically in closing that back door organically in closing that back door for them to stay now are the students for them to stay now are the students for them to stay now are the students that attend the college is by you do that attend the college is by you do that attend the college is by you do they tend to be are they from across the they tend to be are they from across the they tend to be are they from across the state across the country are they people state across the country are they people state across the country are they people you know that that will end up kind of you know that that will end up kind of you know that that will end up kind of close by you you know eventually what close by you you know eventually what close by you you know eventually what does that look like what's the profile does that look like what's the profile does that look like what's the profile of that student yeah so it's really of that student yeah so it's really of that student yeah so it's really unique because just the demographics of unique because just the demographics of unique because just the demographics of the triad area there's so many different the triad area there's so many different the triad area there's so many different schools so unc greensboro which is right schools so unc greensboro which is right schools so unc greensboro which is right here in our backyard that's primarily a here in our backyard that's primarily a here in our backyard that's primarily a school that that's fed by local North school that that's fed by local North school that that's fed by local North Carolinian so you don't really meet a Carolinian so you don't really meet a Carolinian so you don't really meet a ton of students at UNCG they are from ton of students at UNCG they are from ton of students at UNCG they are from out of state yeah but then right down out of state yeah but then right down out of state yeah but then right down the street from us is high point the street from us is high point the street from us is high point university and high point university university and high point university university and high point university it's very different most of the people it's very different most of the people it's very different most of the people are from your neck of the woods from are from your neck of the woods from are from your neck of the woods from from Jersey from the Northeast ok and so from Jersey from the Northeast ok and so from Jersey from the Northeast ok and so Craig we there's kind of an eclectic Craig we there's kind of an eclectic Craig we there's kind of an eclectic formation of students at our church that formation of students at our church that formation of students at our church that are from places like Chicago and from are from places like Chicago and from are from places like Chicago and from Lexington North Carolina who interest to Lexington North Carolina who interest to Lexington North Carolina who interest to help and one of the things that we've help and one of the things that we've help and one of the things that we've seen is you know you know I think a lot seen is you know you know I think a lot seen is you know you know I think a lot of times when churches think about of times when churches think about of times when churches think about Millennials and think about college Millennials and think about college Millennials and think about college students made me in particular they

students made me in particular they students made me in particular they struggle to see the value and the struggle to see the value and the struggle to see the value and the benefit and and what we've seen is when benefit and and what we've seen is when benefit and and what we've seen is when you learn to open the front door through you learn to open the front door through you learn to open the front door through a good organized system but close the a good organized system but close the a good organized system but close the back door through relationships back door through relationships back door through relationships organically is it there's an immediate organically is it there's an immediate organically is it there's an immediate effect on students which is that you get effect on students which is that you get effect on students which is that you get to see them grow and plug into your to see them grow and plug into your to see them grow and plug into your research right well we've we've started research right well we've we've started research right well we've we've started now and out with her in the year for we now and out with her in the year for we now and out with her in the year for we started to see a long term effect where started to see a long term effect where started to see a long term effect where if I look at our staff we have 39 staff if I look at our staff we have 39 staff if I look at our staff we have 39 staff members now we did a lot of hiring over members now we did a lot of hiring over members now we did a lot of hiring over the summer um we have 13 on staff the summer um we have 13 on staff the summer um we have 13 on staff members now I think if I'm correct ten members now I think if I'm correct ten members now I think if I'm correct ten of them are either former students or of them are either former students or of them are either former students or students anything about that excuse for students anything about that excuse for students anything about that excuse for you in our church and that's because you in our church and that's because you in our church and that's because they've what we've done is we've they've what we've done is we've they've what we've done is we've connected them in such a meaningful way connected them in such a meaningful way connected them in such a meaningful way that they don't want to leave right that they don't want to leave right that they don't want to leave right doesn't matter they're from wherever you doesn't matter they're from wherever you doesn't matter they're from wherever you have student right now she's doing a lot have student right now she's doing a lot have student right now she's doing a lot of work with us in misérables she's from of work with us in misérables she's from of work with us in misérables she's from Long Island and she has no plans on Long Island and she has no plans on Long Island and she has no plans on going back to Long Island no offense going back to Long Island no offense going back to Long Island no offense along yeah I can understand we've seen along yeah I can understand we've seen along yeah I can understand we've seen we've say that there is an immediate we've say that there is an immediate we've say that there is an immediate effect of seeing more students plug into effect of seeing more students plug into effect of seeing more students plug into your church but there is a long-term your church but there is a long-term your church but there is a long-term effect that I think church is missed effect that I think church is missed effect that I think church is missed sometimes when they don't understand how sometimes when they don't understand how sometimes when they don't understand how to assimilate Millennials and college to assimilate Millennials and college to assimilate Millennials and college students and that is you can you can students and that is you can you can students and that is you can you can build your staff in residence at Whitley build your staff in residence at Whitley build your staff in residence at Whitley it's white yeah let me put it and you're it's white yeah let me put it and you're it's white yeah let me put it and you're not saying this you didn't say this I'm not saying this you didn't say this I'm not saying this you didn't say this I'm saying so I because I'm gonna say some saying so I because I'm gonna say some saying so I because I'm gonna say some that may mildly offend people who are that may mildly offend people who are that may mildly offend people who are listening I think there are a lot of listening I think there are a lot of listening I think there are a lot of church leaders a lot of senior leaders church leaders a lot of senior leaders church leaders a lot of senior leaders executive pastors that frankly look at executive pastors that frankly look at executive pastors that frankly look at the college ministry thing and say

the college ministry thing and say the college ministry thing and say there's no money in that why are we there's no money in that why are we there's no money in that why are we doing this it's those people there isn't doing this it's those people there isn't doing this it's those people there isn't any money yeah you know they're not any money yeah you know they're not any money yeah you know they're not tithing they're not kids who have tithing they're not kids who have tithing they're not kids who have tithing parents or you know or potential tithing parents or you know or potential tithing parents or you know or potential tithing parents and so I frankly I think tithing parents and so I frankly I think tithing parents and so I frankly I think that's a part of the reason why college that's a part of the reason why college that's a part of the reason why college ministry gets starved but listen ministry gets starved but listen ministry gets starved but listen listen to what what we're saying here listen to what what we're saying here listen to what what we're saying here you if you do that you're it's a little you if you do that you're it's a little you if you do that you're it's a little bit of your cutting off your nose to bit of your cutting off your nose to bit of your cutting off your nose to spite your face because you know spite your face because you know spite your face because you know reaching out to college students is reaching out to college students is reaching out to college students is about impacting the next generation it's about impacting the next generation it's about impacting the next generation it's about saying how do we keep a fresh flow about saying how do we keep a fresh flow about saying how do we keep a fresh flow of you know young leaders into the of you know young leaders into the of you know young leaders into the organization whether they end up on your organization whether they end up on your organization whether they end up on your staff or whether they just end up in staff or whether they just end up in staff or whether they just end up in leadership roles and volunteer places or leadership roles and volunteer places or leadership roles and volunteer places or you know that or whether you know five you know that or whether you know five you know that or whether you know five years from now they're they're living in years from now they're they're living in years from now they're they're living in in your community and our active part of in your community and our active part of in your community and our active part of this and they're just you know they're I this and they're just you know they're I this and they're just you know they're I do think that we take unfortunately a do think that we take unfortunately a do think that we take unfortunately a lot of church leaders can take a lot of church leaders can take a lot of church leaders can take a short-term view on college students short-term view on college students short-term view on college students unfortunately yeah I mean I think you unfortunately yeah I mean I think you unfortunately yeah I mean I think you nailed it right there you know and we nailed it right there you know and we nailed it right there you know and we saw this and this was such a blessing saw this and this was such a blessing saw this and this was such a blessing for us to see coming out of the summit for us to see coming out of the summit for us to see coming out of the summit church and recognizing that that church church and recognizing that that church church and recognizing that that church leaders they have to have a more leaders they have to have a more leaders they have to have a more long-term view like we're saying you long-term view like we're saying you long-term view like we're saying you know we brought with us 10 students that know we brought with us 10 students that know we brought with us 10 students that had recently graduated from some of the had recently graduated from some of the had recently graduated from some of the schools in the Triangle from North schools in the Triangle from North schools in the Triangle from North Carolina from UNC and what was really Carolina from UNC and what was really Carolina from UNC and what was really cool is we saw that these students which cool is we saw that these students which cool is we saw that these students which again you think in their student life again you think in their student life again you think in their student life not very contributing members of the
