So we lived in Madrid but in different places lived in Madrid but in different places lived in Madrid but in different places and we had no money. and we had no money. and we had no money. We were young and it was actually a We were young and it was actually a We were young and it was actually a really good time. Madrid is a crazy busy really good time. Madrid is a crazy busy really good time. Madrid is a crazy busy city and it was great for our lifestyle city and it was great for our lifestyle city and it was great for our lifestyle then. then. then. >> So two things that changed about me >> So two things that changed about me >> So two things that changed about me during that two years of living in during that two years of living in during that two years of living in Madrid. One is I had to grow up and Madrid. One is I had to grow up and Madrid. One is I had to grow up and start doing things like really on my start doing things like really on my start doing things like really on my own. Although I'd lived a couple of own. Although I'd lived a couple of own. Although I'd lived a couple of years on my own but in my hometown. So I years on my own but in my hometown. So I years on my own but in my hometown. So I still had the ability to rely on either still had the ability to rely on either still had the ability to rely on either my older sister, who's awesome, or my my older sister, who's awesome, or my my older sister, who's awesome, or my parents who took care of many many parents who took care of many many parents who took care of many many things in my life up until I turned things in my life up until I turned things in my life up until I turned really 18, 19 years old. really 18, 19 years old. really 18, 19 years old. The other thing is that although in The other thing is that although in The other thing is that although in certain periods of university I was kind certain periods of university I was kind certain periods of university I was kind of broke, I did not have very much money of broke, I did not have very much money of broke, I did not have very much money when we lived in Spain. I wasn't earning when we lived in Spain. I wasn't earning when we lived in Spain. I wasn't earning very much money, so I really had to very much money, so I really had to very much money, so I really had to budget wisely. And I think that set me budget wisely. And I think that set me budget wisely. And I think that set me up for other things in the rest of our up for other things in the rest of our up for other things in the rest of our lives, whether it be, you know, saving lives, whether it be, you know, saving lives, whether it be, you know, saving money to get investments or just money to get investments or just money to get investments or just spending money wiser.

  3. spending money wiser. spending money wiser. That 2 years in Madrid absolutely like That 2 years in Madrid absolutely like That 2 years in Madrid absolutely like laid the foundation for me to know how laid the foundation for me to know how laid the foundation for me to know how to spend money and where not to spend to spend money and where not to spend to spend money and where not to spend money. money. money. >> And speaking on the money side for me, I >> And speaking on the money side for me, I >> And speaking on the money side for me, I had always just used my parents' credit had always just used my parents' credit had always just used my parents' credit card for things. So, I didn't have a job card for things. So, I didn't have a job card for things. So, I didn't have a job because I played soccer on a scholarship because I played soccer on a scholarship because I played soccer on a scholarship and that was mainly my job. So, I did and that was mainly my job. So, I did and that was mainly my job. So, I did not really know how to manage money not really know how to manage money not really know how to manage money well. But I graduated from college and well. But I graduated from college and well. But I graduated from college and the month after I graduated we moved to the month after I graduated we moved to the month after I graduated we moved to Spain. So, here I am on my own. Now, my Spain. So, here I am on my own. Now, my Spain. So, here I am on my own. Now, my parents did let me take the credit card, parents did let me take the credit card, parents did let me take the credit card, but it was like an emergency situation but it was like an emergency situation but it was like an emergency situation only. So, here I am having like an only. So, here I am having like an only. So, here I am having like an actual real job for the first time out actual real job for the first time out actual real job for the first time out in the real world and having to save my in the real world and having to save my in the real world and having to save my own money. And I did not make much own money. And I did not make much own money. And I did not make much money. So, I had to really be uh crafty money. So, I had to really be uh crafty money. So, I had to really be uh crafty about this. And we were very crafty. I about this. And we were very crafty. I about this. And we were very crafty. I mean, thankfully for Spain cost of mean, thankfully for Spain cost of mean, thankfully for Spain cost of living is low and we could travel really living is low and we could travel really living is low and we could travel really well. well. well. >> Yeah, especially at that time. I mean, >> Yeah, especially at that time. I mean, >> Yeah, especially at that time. I mean, 2009 to 2011 things were quite 2009 to 2011 things were quite 2009 to 2011 things were quite affordable across the board. So, that affordable across the board. So, that affordable across the board. So, that made a huge difference. I was more or made a huge difference. I was more or made a huge difference. I was more or less like on the minimum wage.

  4. less like on the minimum wage. less like on the minimum wage. You were under minimum wage. You were under minimum wage. You were under minimum wage. >> Well under. >> Well under. >> Well under. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And it's fine. I mean, I was an au pair >> And it's fine. I mean, I was an au pair >> And it's fine. I mean, I was an au pair so I lived with the family I worked for. so I lived with the family I worked for. so I lived with the family I worked for. So, the perks were I would eat meals So, the perks were I would eat meals So, the perks were I would eat meals there. I had my housing paid for. So, I there. I had my housing paid for. So, I there. I had my housing paid for. So, I didn't have some of those bills that didn't have some of those bills that didn't have some of those bills that would be normal. And then I had a small would be normal. And then I had a small would be normal. And then I had a small like stipend. But something else for me like stipend. But something else for me like stipend. But something else for me as well, going away from the money side as well, going away from the money side as well, going away from the money side of things, is I've always been a very of things, is I've always been a very of things, is I've always been a very confident independent person, but this confident independent person, but this confident independent person, but this was like a whole different world. I had was like a whole different world. I had was like a whole different world. I had to get out of my comfort zone. So, I did to get out of my comfort zone. So, I did to get out of my comfort zone. So, I did find that there were challenges because find that there were challenges because find that there were challenges because not only was I in a completely different not only was I in a completely different not only was I in a completely different country with a different language, but I country with a different language, but I country with a different language, but I was doing different things I had never was doing different things I had never was doing different things I had never done before. Like taking the public bus, done before. Like taking the public bus, done before. Like taking the public bus, constantly, all the time, and navigating constantly, all the time, and navigating constantly, all the time, and navigating different things like that. So, I do different things like that. So, I do different things like that. So, I do feel like it pulled me out of my comfort feel like it pulled me out of my comfort feel like it pulled me out of my comfort zone, which was scary at first, but zone, which was scary at first, but zone, which was scary at first, but really good and really life-changing. really good and really life-changing. really good and really life-changing. >> I think the other thing that it changed >> I think the other thing that it changed >> I think the other thing that it changed in me was it allowed me to become more in me was it allowed me to become more in me was it allowed me to become more open because open because open because we were really surrounded by a lot of we were really surrounded by a lot of we were really surrounded by a lot of people that were much more socially people that were much more socially people that were much more socially liberal than the way we grew up. So, liberal than the way we grew up. So, liberal than the way we grew up. So, seeing just the way they conducted their seeing just the way they conducted their seeing just the way they conducted their kind of everyday life was different.

  5. kind of everyday life was different. kind of everyday life was different. Wasn't so much in like maybe their style Wasn't so much in like maybe their style Wasn't so much in like maybe their style or the way they dressed, but certainly or the way they dressed, but certainly or the way they dressed, but certainly there was more drug use and promiscuity there was more drug use and promiscuity there was more drug use and promiscuity that occurred. And I had always had an that occurred. And I had always had an that occurred. And I had always had an idea of what that was like with an idea of what that was like with an idea of what that was like with an outside lens looking in, but then like outside lens looking in, but then like outside lens looking in, but then like being around people that were more being around people that were more being around people that were more promiscuous and use drugs. I don't want promiscuous and use drugs. I don't want promiscuous and use drugs. I don't want to say that I got comfortable with it, to say that I got comfortable with it, to say that I got comfortable with it, but I wasn't uncomfortable around it, if but I wasn't uncomfortable around it, if but I wasn't uncomfortable around it, if that makes sense. that makes sense. that makes sense. >> Yeah, it was something that was I guess >> Yeah, it was something that was I guess >> Yeah, it was something that was I guess maybe a bit more common that we weren't maybe a bit more common that we weren't maybe a bit more common that we weren't exposed to on a regular side. Like at exposed to on a regular side. Like at exposed to on a regular side. Like at our universities, but even university is our universities, but even university is our universities, but even university is a different level as well when you think a different level as well when you think a different level as well when you think about like sororities and so on. Like about like sororities and so on. Like about like sororities and so on. Like that's a little different than what this that's a little different than what this that's a little different than what this is out in the real [clears throat] is out in the real [clears throat] is out in the real [clears throat] world. So, world. So, world. So, >> Usually there's just more, at least in >> Usually there's just more, at least in >> Usually there's just more, at least in American universities, alcohol. I was American universities, alcohol. I was American universities, alcohol. I was going to say like binge [clears throat] going to say like binge [clears throat] going to say like binge [clears throat] drinking, which we didn't see a ton of drinking, which we didn't see a ton of drinking, which we didn't see a ton of that per se in Madrid. I mean, there was that per se in Madrid. I mean, there was that per se in Madrid. I mean, there was that, that, that, >> It's very different. I think the alcohol >> It's very different. I think the alcohol >> It's very different. I think the alcohol is very different in Europe because of is very different in Europe because of is very different in Europe because of more the liberal mindset in the sense more the liberal mindset in the sense more the liberal mindset in the sense that you can start drinking when you're that you can start drinking when you're that you can start drinking when you're 16, 18 is when you can be at bars and 16, 18 is when you can be at bars and 16, 18 is when you can be at bars and everything. So, for us when you get to everything. So, for us when you get to everything. So, for us when you get to university it's like you're 21 and then university it's like you're 21 and then university it's like you're 21 and then it's like the craze, but for them by the it's like the craze, but for them by the it's like the craze, but for them by the time they're 21 or outside of university time they're 21 or outside of university time they're 21 or outside of university then it's already like they've been then it's already like they've been then it's already like they've been drinking for a long time, so it's not as drinking for a long time, so it's not as drinking for a long time, so it's not as crazy. So, I think you get the binge crazy. So, I think you get the binge crazy. So, I think you get the binge drinking is probably more with like the drinking is probably more with like the drinking is probably more with like the teenagers, so it's a little different of teenagers, so it's a little different of teenagers, so it's a little different of a culture.

  6. a culture. a culture. >> Yeah, and you you see 14, 15, >> Yeah, and you you see 14, 15, >> Yeah, and you you see 14, 15, 16-year-olds practicing what they call 16-year-olds practicing what they call 16-year-olds practicing what they call botellón, which is where you take botellón, which is where you take botellón, which is where you take alcohol out to the streets, usually a alcohol out to the streets, usually a alcohol out to the streets, usually a park, park bench you kind of occupy, and park, park bench you kind of occupy, and park, park bench you kind of occupy, and you drink and chat with friends out you drink and chat with friends out you drink and chat with friends out there. there. there. >> Now, something else that I did find that >> Now, something else that I did find that >> Now, something else that I did find that changed me as well is I found that I changed me as well is I found that I changed me as well is I found that I really like the European lifestyle. So really like the European lifestyle. So really like the European lifestyle. So when you think about culturally how when you think about culturally how when you think about culturally how things are different and I mean things are different and I mean things are different and I mean obviously like Europe has many different obviously like Europe has many different obviously like Europe has many different countries and there's different countries and there's different countries and there's different cultures. But compared to the US if you cultures. But compared to the US if you cultures. But compared to the US if you kind of clump in like the European kind of clump in like the European kind of clump in like the European lifestyle and the US lifestyle and lifestyle and the US lifestyle and lifestyle and the US lifestyle and specifically if you hone in to Spain or specifically if you hone in to Spain or specifically if you hone in to Spain or the Mediterranean type lifestyle, I the Mediterranean type lifestyle, I the Mediterranean type lifestyle, I really like the slower pace of life, the really like the slower pace of life, the really like the slower pace of life, the later nights, so eating later, being later nights, so eating later, being later nights, so eating later, being out, the social aspect, that families out, the social aspect, that families out, the social aspect, that families are involved in things, kids are able to are involved in things, kids are able to are involved in things, kids are able to run around safely and be involved in run around safely and be involved in run around safely and be involved in different festivals, different festivals, different festivals, um the cafe culture that exists here um the cafe culture that exists here um the cafe culture that exists here that it's just a little different in the that it's just a little different in the that it's just a little different in the US for what we have. So I found in my US for what we have. So I found in my US for what we have. So I found in my first couple of years what changed me is first couple of years what changed me is first couple of years what changed me is that I really like the European that I really like the European that I really like the European lifestyle more than the American lifestyle more than the American lifestyle more than the American lifestyle.

  7. lifestyle. lifestyle. >> True. I saw that in you. Now shifting to >> True. I saw that in you. Now shifting to >> True. I saw that in you. Now shifting to Asia, we moved to South Korea and in Asia, we moved to South Korea and in Asia, we moved to South Korea and in South Korea, that's where my empathy for South Korea, that's where my empathy for South Korea, that's where my empathy for foreigners really grew because we were foreigners really grew because we were foreigners really grew because we were dropped off in a place where we knew dropped off in a place where we knew dropped off in a place where we knew absolutely none of the language. We absolutely none of the language. We absolutely none of the language. We couldn't even like understand that we couldn't even like understand that we couldn't even like understand that we were two streets away from a grocery were two streets away from a grocery were two streets away from a grocery store because the way the grocery store store because the way the grocery store store because the way the grocery store looked from the outside and there looked from the outside and there looked from the outside and there weren't like pictures of food that would weren't like pictures of food that would weren't like pictures of food that would lead you to believe that there was food lead you to believe that there was food lead you to believe that there was food inside of this parking lot ramp that led inside of this parking lot ramp that led inside of this parking lot ramp that led to the entrance of the grocery store. to the entrance of the grocery store. to the entrance of the grocery store. Pure madness. So we were in Busan, the Pure madness. So we were in Busan, the Pure madness. So we were in Busan, the second largest city in the country. second largest city in the country. second largest city in the country. We're talking about 5 million plus We're talking about 5 million plus We're talking about 5 million plus people at that time. people at that time. people at that time. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> And it was worlds apart and it got me >> And it was worlds apart and it got me >> And it was worlds apart and it got me thinking about what it must be like for thinking about what it must be like for thinking about what it must be like for people from other parts of the world people from other parts of the world people from other parts of the world coming into the US for example since coming into the US for example since coming into the US for example since that's where we're from and it just that's where we're from and it just that's where we're from and it just allowed me to grow in empathy about what allowed me to grow in empathy about what allowed me to grow in empathy about what their experience must be like being kind their experience must be like being kind their experience must be like being kind of more patient talking to uh people of more patient talking to uh people of more patient talking to uh people that were foreigners in the US and that were foreigners in the US and that were foreigners in the US and dealing kind of with people in that way.

  8. dealing kind of with people in that way. dealing kind of with people in that way. >> And even just speaking slower. So, we >> And even just speaking slower. So, we >> And even just speaking slower. So, we did learn that like, you know, if you're did learn that like, you know, if you're did learn that like, you know, if you're trying to speak English to someone who trying to speak English to someone who trying to speak English to someone who is learning English, you can't just is learning English, you can't just is learning English, you can't just which I know is hard for me because I'm which I know is hard for me because I'm which I know is hard for me because I'm a very fast speaker. But when I am a very fast speaker. But when I am a very fast speaker. But when I am engaging with someone who their native engaging with someone who their native engaging with someone who their native language is not English, I naturally language is not English, I naturally language is not English, I naturally slow down and that came from our time in slow down and that came from our time in slow down and that came from our time in Korea where we started that type of Korea where we started that type of Korea where we started that type of career in ESL, but then also when you career in ESL, but then also when you career in ESL, but then also when you realize we're in their country anyway. I realize we're in their country anyway. I realize we're in their country anyway. I obviously can't speak very good Korean. obviously can't speak very good Korean. obviously can't speak very good Korean. I've got my certain words I can say. I've got my certain words I can say. I've got my certain words I can say. They know more English. So, we're trying They know more English. So, we're trying They know more English. So, we're trying to engage in English and you have to go to engage in English and you have to go to engage in English and you have to go slowly so that it's understandable. slowly so that it's understandable. slowly so that it's understandable. Another thing that I think I learned Another thing that I think I learned Another thing that I think I learned when we went to Korea is our survival when we went to Korea is our survival when we went to Korea is our survival skills and our instincts were skills and our instincts were skills and our instincts were heightened. They got better. So, when heightened. They got better. So, when heightened. They got better. So, when you are dropped off in a place that's you are dropped off in a place that's you are dropped off in a place that's completely foreign, then you know, it's completely foreign, then you know, it's completely foreign, then you know, it's sink or swim. So, you have to survive. sink or swim. So, you have to survive. sink or swim. So, you have to survive. So, how does that look? How does that So, how does that look? How does that So, how does that look? How does that look when you're just doing it by look when you're just doing it by look when you're just doing it by yourself or with someone? How can you yourself or with someone? How can you yourself or with someone? How can you adapt if you see someone who is clearly adapt if you see someone who is clearly adapt if you see someone who is clearly not Korean or not from there and then not Korean or not from there and then not Korean or not from there and then maybe they're native English speaker and maybe they're native English speaker and maybe they're native English speaker and you're like, I need help or whatever you're like, I need help or whatever you're like, I need help or whatever that might look like. The survival that might look like. The survival that might look like. The survival skills as you bounce around to different skills as you bounce around to different skills as you bounce around to different countries whether you're traveling or countries whether you're traveling or countries whether you're traveling or moving is what transforms as well.

  9. moving is what transforms as well. moving is what transforms as well. >> I thought you were actually going to >> I thought you were actually going to >> I thought you were actually going to bring up the BOB. bring up the BOB. bring up the BOB. >> The BOB? >> The BOB? >> The BOB? >> out bag. >> out bag. >> out bag. >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, yeah. >> So, that was where we learned about the >> So, that was where we learned about the >> So, that was where we learned about the bug out bag and being prepared for some bug out bag and being prepared for some bug out bag and being prepared for some sort of catastrophic event sort of catastrophic event sort of catastrophic event >> North Korea is right there. >> North Korea is right there. >> North Korea is right there. >> Yeah, I was going to say like throughout >> Yeah, I was going to say like throughout >> Yeah, I was going to say like throughout the history of of North and South Korea, the history of of North and South Korea, the history of of North and South Korea, at least like the modern history of at least like the modern history of at least like the modern history of North and South Korea, they've always North and South Korea, they've always North and South Korea, they've always been at odds in different like been at odds in different like been at odds in different like confrontation levels. And at the time we confrontation levels. And at the time we confrontation levels. And at the time we were there, tensions were rising. So, we were there, tensions were rising. So, we were there, tensions were rising. So, we thought it might be best to have some thought it might be best to have some thought it might be best to have some sort of like evacuation plan. It was the sort of like evacuation plan. It was the sort of like evacuation plan. It was the first time in our lives that we ever had first time in our lives that we ever had first time in our lives that we ever had to like consider that because the places to like consider that because the places to like consider that because the places that we come from the US are relatively that we come from the US are relatively that we come from the US are relatively safe and I think most people watching safe and I think most people watching safe and I think most people watching this are probably like BOB. this are probably like BOB. this are probably like BOB. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. What do you need that for? Yeah. What do you need that for? Yeah. What do you need that for? Yeah. >> Yeah, so we're talking about a bag that >> Yeah, so we're talking about a bag that >> Yeah, so we're talking about a bag that like you can grab really quickly on the like you can grab really quickly on the like you can grab really quickly on the go. It's got things like water, salt, go. It's got things like water, salt, go. It's got things like water, salt, batteries, couple change of clothing. batteries, couple change of clothing. batteries, couple change of clothing. >> Bandages. >> Bandages. >> Bandages. >> Bandages, like things that you'll need >> Bandages, like things that you'll need >> Bandages, like things that you'll need as like a 24 to 48-hour as like a 24 to 48-hour as like a 24 to 48-hour kind of survival kit. kind of survival kit. kind of survival kit. >> Mhm. So, at the time, my work was closer >> Mhm. So, at the time, my work was closer >> Mhm. So, at the time, my work was closer to our apartment than Josh's was. And we to our apartment than Josh's was. And we to our apartment than Josh's was. And we had our dog as well. So, I needed to go had our dog as well. So, I needed to go had our dog as well. So, I needed to go back, get the BOB, get the dog, and then back, get the BOB, get the dog, and then back, get the BOB, get the dog, and then meet at our meeting location. It's meet at our meeting location. It's meet at our meeting location. It's something to think about depending on something to think about depending on something to think about depending on where you're moving to. I mean, it where you're moving to. I mean, it where you're moving to. I mean, it sounds a little scary, but it is sounds a little scary, but it is sounds a little scary, but it is something I guess when I said survival something I guess when I said survival something I guess when I said survival instincts, he went there. I was just instincts, he went there. I was just instincts, he went there. I was just thinking about survival in a new place thinking about survival in a new place thinking about survival in a new place that's super foreign, but that is that's super foreign, but that is that's super foreign, but that is something to consider depending on where something to consider depending on where something to consider depending on where you're moving to.

  10. you're moving to. you're moving to. >> Yeah, absolutely. Now, transitioning >> Yeah, absolutely. Now, transitioning >> Yeah, absolutely. Now, transitioning from South Korea, we end up going from South Korea, we end up going from South Korea, we end up going somewhere that Kaylee did not want to somewhere that Kaylee did not want to somewhere that Kaylee did not want to go. go. go. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Speaking of survival. >> Speaking of survival. >> Speaking of survival. >> And more use of like having to have an >> And more use of like having to have an >> And more use of like having to have an evacuation plan, we ended up moving to evacuation plan, we ended up moving to evacuation plan, we ended up moving to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia. >> Yes, so Josh really wanted to go to the >> Yes, so Josh really wanted to go to the >> Yes, so Josh really wanted to go to the Middle East, which I understand. I was Middle East, which I understand. I was Middle East, which I understand. I was like, "I'll go anywhere but Saudi like, "I'll go anywhere but Saudi like, "I'll go anywhere but Saudi Arabia." You know, famous last words. Arabia." You know, famous last words. Arabia." You know, famous last words. And of course, just the way that work And of course, just the way that work And of course, just the way that work ended up being, we ended up there in ended up being, we ended up there in ended up being, we ended up there in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia. >> And this is really where the shift in me >> And this is really where the shift in me >> And this is really where the shift in me happened that I have a pretty big happened that I have a pretty big happened that I have a pretty big distrust in mainstream media. distrust in mainstream media. distrust in mainstream media. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> For a long time, we had been told what >> For a long time, we had been told what >> For a long time, we had been told what the Middle East was like and why as the Middle East was like and why as the Middle East was like and why as Westerners we shouldn't like it and Westerners we shouldn't like it and Westerners we shouldn't like it and other kind of, let's say, lies about other kind of, let's say, lies about other kind of, let's say, lies about people in the Middle East and and all. people in the Middle East and and all. people in the Middle East and and all. So, I'll just kind of say that kind of So, I'll just kind of say that kind of So, I'll just kind of say that kind of generally. And that was kind of the generally. And that was kind of the generally. And that was kind of the heart of us wanting to go to to the heart of us wanting to go to to the heart of us wanting to go to to the Middle East, more specifically UAE and Middle East, more specifically UAE and Middle East, more specifically UAE and Saudi Arabia. We were leveling up in our Saudi Arabia. We were leveling up in our Saudi Arabia. We were leveling up in our kind of jobs. We were both teaching at kind of jobs. We were both teaching at kind of jobs. We were both teaching at that point. And we knew that like the that point. And we knew that like the that point. And we knew that like the next step could be the Middle East to next step could be the Middle East to next step could be the Middle East to earn more money, to be able to save more earn more money, to be able to save more earn more money, to be able to save more money, and then also on the other side money, and then also on the other side money, and then also on the other side was to have this experience and learn was to have this experience and learn was to have this experience and learn like really firsthand what is it like to like really firsthand what is it like to like really firsthand what is it like to be in the Middle East. And honestly, be in the Middle East. And honestly, be in the Middle East. And honestly, like I was broken. I was broken in terms like I was broken. I was broken in terms like I was broken. I was broken in terms of knowing of knowing of knowing what the media tells you and what you what the media tells you and what you what the media tells you and what you experience does not like it collides. It experience does not like it collides. It experience does not like it collides. It does not mesh together. So, that was

  11. does not mesh together. So, that was does not mesh together. So, that was huge for me to be more skeptical of what huge for me to be more skeptical of what huge for me to be more skeptical of what my country's media was telling me and I my country's media was telling me and I my country's media was telling me and I had the realization that had the realization that had the realization that all like all like all like domestic media in international media domestic media in international media domestic media in international media wants to make other countries look bad wants to make other countries look bad wants to make other countries look bad because it makes them look better. Like because it makes them look better. Like because it makes them look better. Like I think that was my big takeaway. I think that was my big takeaway. I think that was my big takeaway. >> So, I mean and the takeaway as well is >> So, I mean and the takeaway as well is >> So, I mean and the takeaway as well is to get out yourself and see it for to get out yourself and see it for to get out yourself and see it for yourself rather than having someone else yourself rather than having someone else yourself rather than having someone else tell you how you should think or feel tell you how you should think or feel tell you how you should think or feel about anything really. When you can about anything really. When you can about anything really. When you can experience it yourself then you form experience it yourself then you form experience it yourself then you form your own opinions about it. But we met your own opinions about it. But we met your own opinions about it. But we met some of the nicest people there. They some of the nicest people there. They some of the nicest people there. They were just so loving and kind and were just so loving and kind and were just so loving and kind and accommodating and knowing that we are in accommodating and knowing that we are in accommodating and knowing that we are in a foreign place to us, right? It's very a foreign place to us, right? It's very a foreign place to us, right? It's very different for us because when I did different for us because when I did different for us because when I did leave the compound, I had to wear the leave the compound, I had to wear the leave the compound, I had to wear the abaya, the cover-up, you know? And abaya, the cover-up, you know? And abaya, the cover-up, you know? And foreigners women didn't necessarily have foreigners women didn't necessarily have foreigners women didn't necessarily have to cover their hair. A lot of us did to cover their hair. A lot of us did to cover their hair. A lot of us did just to kind of blend in so that it just just to kind of blend in so that it just just to kind of blend in so that it just didn't look odd. But the women that I didn't look odd. But the women that I didn't look odd. But the women that I worked with and the students that we worked with and the students that we worked with and the students that we had, they understood that it was had, they understood that it was had, they understood that it was different for us. So, how could they different for us. So, how could they different for us. So, how could they make it as comfortable as possible and make it as comfortable as possible and make it as comfortable as possible and be excited to show us their culture and be excited to show us their culture and be excited to show us their culture and why it is an amazing culture. And they why it is an amazing culture. And they why it is an amazing culture. And they do have a lot of great things that they do have a lot of great things that they do have a lot of great things that they do there that are a lot of fun. So, do there that are a lot of fun. So, do there that are a lot of fun. So, culturally we did learn a lot and aren't culturally we did learn a lot and aren't culturally we did learn a lot and aren't afraid of that part of the world, enjoy afraid of that part of the world, enjoy afraid of that part of the world, enjoy that part of the world, will visit, uh that part of the world, will visit, uh that part of the world, will visit, uh want to take our daughter there and so want to take our daughter there and so want to take our daughter there and so on.

  12. on. on. >> Yeah, the other thing that changed in me >> Yeah, the other thing that changed in me >> Yeah, the other thing that changed in me and this kind of dovetails off of what and this kind of dovetails off of what and this kind of dovetails off of what Kaylee said is that people in general Kaylee said is that people in general Kaylee said is that people in general are all the same the world over in terms are all the same the world over in terms are all the same the world over in terms of like what their goals and desires and of like what their goals and desires and of like what their goals and desires and aspirations are. So, you can find common aspirations are. So, you can find common aspirations are. So, you can find common ground with people that come from very ground with people that come from very ground with people that come from very different backgrounds than you. Now, different backgrounds than you. Now, different backgrounds than you. Now, it's not always the case. I'm sure it's not always the case. I'm sure it's not always the case. I'm sure there's going to be some people in the there's going to be some people in the there's going to be some people in the comments section that'll be like, "What comments section that'll be like, "What comments section that'll be like, "What about these people over there?" Okay, about these people over there?" Okay, about these people over there?" Okay, that exists, but like in terms of our that exists, but like in terms of our that exists, but like in terms of our experience traveling because at that experience traveling because at that experience traveling because at that point we probably had visited anywhere point we probably had visited anywhere point we probably had visited anywhere between 40 and 50 countries as well. So, between 40 and 50 countries as well. So, between 40 and 50 countries as well. So, not just this being the fourth country not just this being the fourth country not just this being the fourth country that we've lived or the third country that we've lived or the third country that we've lived or the third country that we've lived abroad. We've been to that we've lived abroad. We've been to that we've lived abroad. We've been to 40 50 other countries and traveling kind 40 50 other countries and traveling kind 40 50 other countries and traveling kind of opened our eyes to the fact that in of opened our eyes to the fact that in of opened our eyes to the fact that in general people are nice. general people are nice. general people are nice. You will find bad apples out there, but You will find bad apples out there, but You will find bad apples out there, but in general the masses like they don't in general the masses like they don't in general the masses like they don't mean you any harm. mean you any harm. mean you any harm. >> Yeah, I would say like you said, most >> Yeah, I would say like you said, most >> Yeah, I would say like you said, most people are kind. And in every country people are kind. And in every country people are kind. And in every country there are kind people, there are there are kind people, there are there are kind people, there are scammers, there are people only looking scammers, there are people only looking scammers, there are people only looking out for themselves, there are people who out for themselves, there are people who out for themselves, there are people who would take the shirt off their back for would take the shirt off their back for would take the shirt off their back for you. So, in every country you have these you. So, in every country you have these you. So, in every country you have these different types of people. So, of different types of people. So, of different types of people. So, of course, you know, you need to be aware course, you know, you need to be aware course, you know, you need to be aware and obviously and obviously and obviously not go into places blindly thinking not go into places blindly thinking not go into places blindly thinking everyone is looking out for you because everyone is looking out for you because everyone is looking out for you because that's not the case. But there you that's not the case. But there you that's not the case. But there you shouldn't do the opposite either or go shouldn't do the opposite either or go shouldn't do the opposite either or go in thinking like everyone being in thinking like everyone being in thinking like everyone being skeptical and everyone's against you.

  13. skeptical and everyone's against you. skeptical and everyone's against you. Just because again, in every country Just because again, in every country Just because again, in every country there are all different kinds of people. there are all different kinds of people. there are all different kinds of people. >> The best and the quirkiest example I can >> The best and the quirkiest example I can >> The best and the quirkiest example I can think of because I've had these think of because I've had these think of because I've had these conversations with our Brazilian friends conversations with our Brazilian friends conversations with our Brazilian friends is Brazil. is Brazil. is Brazil. Brazil has like some of the most awesome Brazil has like some of the most awesome Brazil has like some of the most awesome people people people on planet Earth. They're fun to vibe on planet Earth. They're fun to vibe on planet Earth. They're fun to vibe with, they're great dancers, they just with, they're great dancers, they just with, they're great dancers, they just they like a joke. They're really cool they like a joke. They're really cool they like a joke. They're really cool people to hang out with. Like if you've people to hang out with. Like if you've people to hang out with. Like if you've got some Brazilian friends, you're got some Brazilian friends, you're got some Brazilian friends, you're probably living a very fun life. probably living a very fun life. probably living a very fun life. But on the other side of it, it's like But on the other side of it, it's like But on the other side of it, it's like you ask a Brazilian why they're not in you ask a Brazilian why they're not in you ask a Brazilian why they're not in their home country or why people don't their home country or why people don't their home country or why people don't visit Brazil and what do they say? It's visit Brazil and what do they say? It's visit Brazil and what do they say? It's dangerous. dangerous. dangerous. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> Who makes it dangerous? People. So, >> Who makes it dangerous? People. So, >> Who makes it dangerous? People. So, there are like bad actors that are there there are like bad actors that are there there are like bad actors that are there that do things to create danger and that do things to create danger and that do things to create danger and therefore it's like you have a dangerous therefore it's like you have a dangerous therefore it's like you have a dangerous country and then you have the most country and then you have the most country and then you have the most awesome people on planet Earth. How is awesome people on planet Earth. How is awesome people on planet Earth. How is that possible that both exist? Well, that possible that both exist? Well, that possible that both exist? Well, it's because not everybody's the same. it's because not everybody's the same. it's because not everybody's the same. >> Right. Okay, so then shifting from our >> Right. Okay, so then shifting from our >> Right. Okay, so then shifting from our time in Saudi Arabia, leaving the time in Saudi Arabia, leaving the time in Saudi Arabia, leaving the desert, the sand area, the beige, we desert, the sand area, the beige, we desert, the sand area, the beige, we went to Singapore, which is a very went to Singapore, which is a very went to Singapore, which is a very different experience from Saudi and also different experience from Saudi and also different experience from Saudi and also from Korea, even though it's in Asia, from Korea, even though it's in Asia, from Korea, even though it's in Asia, but it's Southeast Asia.

  14. but it's Southeast Asia. but it's Southeast Asia. >> It was bougie. >> It was bougie. >> It was bougie. >> Bougie. >> Bougie. >> Bougie. >> So, I started to like see a glimpse of a >> So, I started to like see a glimpse of a >> So, I started to like see a glimpse of a different life. We had some families different life. We had some families different life. We had some families that we knew through the school that that we knew through the school that that we knew through the school that were were living on a different level. were were living on a different level. were were living on a different level. >> But even we were living on a different >> But even we were living on a different >> But even we were living on a different level. Again, like you said, leveling up level. Again, like you said, leveling up level. Again, like you said, leveling up from our time in Madrid, where we were from our time in Madrid, where we were from our time in Madrid, where we were broke, Korea making more money, Saudi broke, Korea making more money, Saudi broke, Korea making more money, Saudi making really good money and saving a making really good money and saving a making really good money and saving a lot of money, which was great. But then lot of money, which was great. But then lot of money, which was great. But then we were on really good salaries in we were on really good salaries in we were on really good salaries in Singapore, even though the cost of Singapore, even though the cost of Singapore, even though the cost of living there is higher than other living there is higher than other living there is higher than other places. We had really good salaries and places. We had really good salaries and places. We had really good salaries and we started seeing that we were we started seeing that we were we started seeing that we were transforming a bit in how we did our transforming a bit in how we did our transforming a bit in how we did our personal travel. And, you know, no personal travel. And, you know, no personal travel. And, you know, no longer it wasn't more backpacking or we longer it wasn't more backpacking or we longer it wasn't more backpacking or we got rid of hostels really early. I got rid of hostels really early. I got rid of hostels really early. I couldn't do the hostels really really couldn't do the hostels really really couldn't do the hostels really really early we got rid of that. Um because the early we got rid of that. Um because the early we got rid of that. Um because the hack to that is if you are traveling as hack to that is if you are traveling as hack to that is if you are traveling as two, there are very affordable hotels two, there are very affordable hotels two, there are very affordable hotels that are not nasty, but that are just that are not nasty, but that are just that are not nasty, but that are just standard hotels that you have your own standard hotels that you have your own standard hotels that you have your own room, your own bathroom, and it's an room, your own bathroom, and it's an room, your own bathroom, and it's an actual hotel. So, it's not like you need actual hotel. So, it's not like you need actual hotel. So, it's not like you need to pack shampoo and towels and all of to pack shampoo and towels and all of to pack shampoo and towels and all of those things. And it's just the same those things. And it's just the same those things. And it's just the same price as if you're paying for two people price as if you're paying for two people price as if you're paying for two people in a hostel. So, that's the hack for in a hostel. So, that's the hack for in a hostel. So, that's the hack for that, especially around Europe.

  15. that, especially around Europe. that, especially around Europe. >> Yeah, I mean I was going to say that it >> Yeah, I mean I was going to say that it >> Yeah, I mean I was going to say that it could be like 10 or 15 more bucks. could be like 10 or 15 more bucks. could be like 10 or 15 more bucks. [clears throat] Right. But it's like is [clears throat] Right. But it's like is [clears throat] Right. But it's like is is it worth having your own bathroom? is it worth having your own bathroom? is it worth having your own bathroom? Have you factored in that the hostels Have you factored in that the hostels Have you factored in that the hostels will charge possibly for towels and will charge possibly for towels and will charge possibly for towels and locker rental and all that stuff? locker rental and all that stuff? locker rental and all that stuff? Whereas, if you've got your own room, Whereas, if you've got your own room, Whereas, if you've got your own room, that's it. that's it. that's it. >> Yeah, totally fine. Uh now, in Southeast >> Yeah, totally fine. Uh now, in Southeast >> Yeah, totally fine. Uh now, in Southeast Asia, there are the hostel thing is a Asia, there are the hostel thing is a Asia, there are the hostel thing is a bit more of a thing. Um and it's bit more of a thing. Um and it's bit more of a thing. Um and it's >> Great place to meet people. >> Great place to meet people. >> Great place to meet people. >> That is a good place to meet people. But >> That is a good place to meet people. But >> That is a good place to meet people. But even still, at that point in our stage even still, at that point in our stage even still, at that point in our stage of life, we had leveled up and we were of life, we had leveled up and we were of life, we had leveled up and we were staying in nicer hotels and Asia does a staying in nicer hotels and Asia does a staying in nicer hotels and Asia does a great job but like their hotels that great job but like their hotels that great job but like their hotels that they're very affordable, really nice they're very affordable, really nice they're very affordable, really nice five-star hotels that have executive five-star hotels that have executive five-star hotels that have executive lounges and everything. So, here we see lounges and everything. So, here we see lounges and everything. So, here we see we're transforming a bit as we level up we're transforming a bit as we level up we're transforming a bit as we level up and we make more money. and we make more money. and we make more money. >> Yeah, totally. Uh you can pay, let's >> Yeah, totally. Uh you can pay, let's >> Yeah, totally. Uh you can pay, let's say, 40, 50, 60, 70 for like a good to say, 40, 50, 60, 70 for like a good to say, 40, 50, 60, 70 for like a good to really good hotel in Southeast Asia or really good hotel in Southeast Asia or really good hotel in Southeast Asia or you can spend 80 to 120 and then you're you can spend 80 to 120 and then you're you can spend 80 to 120 and then you're staying at like a five-star luxury staying at like a five-star luxury staying at like a five-star luxury hotel. So, hotel. So, hotel. So, >> And they know how to do service as well. >> And they know how to do service as well. >> And they know how to do service as well. The service industry in that part of the The service industry in that part of the The service industry in that part of the world is really, really great.

  16. world is really, really great. world is really, really great. >> Yeah, I also learned about how much I >> Yeah, I also learned about how much I >> Yeah, I also learned about how much I like efficiency. So, I I realized I I'm like efficiency. So, I I realized I I'm like efficiency. So, I I realized I I'm starting to realize more about myself starting to realize more about myself starting to realize more about myself during that time period and how the during that time period and how the during that time period and how the chaos of chaos of chaos of living in living in living in Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia really like impacted me psychologically really like impacted me psychologically really like impacted me psychologically versus like predictability in Singapore versus like predictability in Singapore versus like predictability in Singapore allowed me to open my mind more allowed me to open my mind more allowed me to open my mind more creatively. creatively. creatively. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. Yeah, that's an interesting way of Yeah, that's an interesting way of Yeah, that's an interesting way of putting it. We love Singapore. We stayed putting it. We love Singapore. We stayed putting it. We love Singapore. We stayed there for 4 years. Could have stayed there for 4 years. Could have stayed there for 4 years. Could have stayed longer but just with how life is and longer but just with how life is and longer but just with how life is and evolving, we were ready to get back to evolving, we were ready to get back to evolving, we were ready to get back to Europe, which we'll get to cuz now we're Europe, which we'll get to cuz now we're Europe, which we'll get to cuz now we're in Portugal. But it gave us a chance to in Portugal. But it gave us a chance to in Portugal. But it gave us a chance to explore a part of the world that I think explore a part of the world that I think explore a part of the world that I think a lot of people don't get to. Or you a lot of people don't get to. Or you a lot of people don't get to. Or you only get to a couple of the places, only get to a couple of the places, only get to a couple of the places, Thailand, Malaysia, maybe Singapore. But Thailand, Malaysia, maybe Singapore. But Thailand, Malaysia, maybe Singapore. But we were able to experience some of the we were able to experience some of the we were able to experience some of the smaller islands, go even farther like to smaller islands, go even farther like to smaller islands, go even farther like to Fiji for example, which is also really Fiji for example, which is also really Fiji for example, which is also really hard to get to. Even Australia and New hard to get to. Even Australia and New hard to get to. Even Australia and New Zealand are hard to get to from the US Zealand are hard to get to from the US Zealand are hard to get to from the US or Europe as well cuz we're looking into or Europe as well cuz we're looking into or Europe as well cuz we're looking into it. It's far. But being there, it's it. It's far. But being there, it's it. It's far. But being there, it's still kind of far but closer. So, being still kind of far but closer. So, being still kind of far but closer. So, being able to experience different cultures able to experience different cultures able to experience different cultures was great. And at this point, Singapore, was great. And at this point, Singapore, was great. And at this point, Singapore, we're we were about 70 to 80 countries we're we were about 70 to 80 countries we're we were about 70 to 80 countries we had been to.

  17. we had been to. we had been to. >> That's right. You ready to talk about >> That's right. You ready to talk about >> That's right. You ready to talk about Portugal? Portugal? Portugal? >> Yes. So, of course, leaving Singapore, >> Yes. So, of course, leaving Singapore, >> Yes. So, of course, leaving Singapore, getting back to that European lifestyle getting back to that European lifestyle getting back to that European lifestyle that I really like that I talked about. that I really like that I talked about. that I really like that I talked about. >> Something really transformative happened >> Something really transformative happened >> Something really transformative happened while we were like in between moving while we were like in between moving while we were like in between moving from Singapore to Portugal during that from Singapore to Portugal during that from Singapore to Portugal during that time period is we had a kid. time period is we had a kid. time period is we had a kid. >> We did. Very big. >> We did. Very big. >> We did. Very big. >> So, that always transforms lives. >> So, that always transforms lives. >> So, that always transforms lives. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Yes, definitely. So, we were hoping to >> Yes, definitely. So, we were hoping to >> Yes, definitely. So, we were hoping to have her in Singapore, but again timing have her in Singapore, but again timing have her in Singapore, but again timing didn't work out. So, in transition, we didn't work out. So, in transition, we didn't work out. So, in transition, we ended up having her back in the US ended up having her back in the US ended up having her back in the US before coming to Portugal. One of the before coming to Portugal. One of the before coming to Portugal. One of the large things was just because I didn't large things was just because I didn't large things was just because I didn't want to have three different doctors want to have three different doctors want to have three different doctors along the way and I didn't want to move along the way and I didn't want to move along the way and I didn't want to move to Portugal, you know, almost ready to to Portugal, you know, almost ready to to Portugal, you know, almost ready to pop and have to figure out the system. pop and have to figure out the system. pop and have to figure out the system. So, it's like, "We'll have her there and So, it's like, "We'll have her there and So, it's like, "We'll have her there and then we'll move to Portugal." then we'll move to Portugal." then we'll move to Portugal." >> So, something that transformed in us was >> So, something that transformed in us was >> So, something that transformed in us was taking the learnings of what we saw with taking the learnings of what we saw with taking the learnings of what we saw with those families that we worked with in those families that we worked with in those families that we worked with in Singapore and internalizing like the Singapore and internalizing like the Singapore and internalizing like the things that we wanted to keep for our things that we wanted to keep for our things that we wanted to keep for our family and the things that we could family and the things that we could family and the things that we could maybe discard that like like didn't maybe discard that like like didn't maybe discard that like like didn't necessarily go with us and like how to necessarily go with us and like how to necessarily go with us and like how to raise a kid abroad.

  18. raise a kid abroad. raise a kid abroad. >> Yes, cuz a lot of people said before we >> Yes, cuz a lot of people said before we >> Yes, cuz a lot of people said before we even moved to Spain, "Go get it out of even moved to Spain, "Go get it out of even moved to Spain, "Go get it out of your system, come back and get a real your system, come back and get a real your system, come back and get a real job and start a family and do that job and start a family and do that job and start a family and do that thing." And we're like, "Oh, okay." But thing." And we're like, "Oh, okay." But thing." And we're like, "Oh, okay." But then as we got going, we saw families then as we got going, we saw families then as we got going, we saw families doing this and doing it well and we're doing this and doing it well and we're doing this and doing it well and we're like, "We can do that." So, especially like, "We can do that." So, especially like, "We can do that." So, especially once we got to Singapore and we worked once we got to Singapore and we worked once we got to Singapore and we worked at an international school, we saw lots at an international school, we saw lots at an international school, we saw lots of families are crushing it here. So, we of families are crushing it here. So, we of families are crushing it here. So, we did have to tell our parents, "We are did have to tell our parents, "We are did have to tell our parents, "We are going to have kids, but that does not going to have kids, but that does not going to have kids, but that does not mean we're moving back to the US." That mean we're moving back to the US." That mean we're moving back to the US." That was never the plan to move back. We was never the plan to move back. We was never the plan to move back. We wanted to continue this lifestyle wanted to continue this lifestyle wanted to continue this lifestyle because not only do we enjoy this because not only do we enjoy this because not only do we enjoy this lifestyle, we wanted to give this type lifestyle, we wanted to give this type lifestyle, we wanted to give this type of lifestyle to our child or at least of lifestyle to our child or at least of lifestyle to our child or at least the option. So, at this point, when the option. So, at this point, when the option. So, at this point, when she's older, if she's like, "You know she's older, if she's like, "You know she's older, if she's like, "You know what? I'm American, I want to go back to what? I'm American, I want to go back to what? I'm American, I want to go back to the US." That's fine. But she gets to the US." That's fine. But she gets to the US." That's fine. But she gets to explore a lot of different countries and explore a lot of different countries and explore a lot of different countries and has, you know, the privilege of being has, you know, the privilege of being has, you know, the privilege of being able to do that. So, transforming her able to do that. So, transforming her able to do that. So, transforming her life already is what we're doing, but life already is what we're doing, but life already is what we're doing, but the plan was to have her in Singapore. the plan was to have her in Singapore. the plan was to have her in Singapore. It didn't work out, so the US and then It didn't work out, so the US and then It didn't work out, so the US and then here we are in Portugal. here we are in Portugal. here we are in Portugal. >> The main thing that's changed for me >> The main thing that's changed for me >> The main thing that's changed for me apart from like what's happening with apart from like what's happening with apart from like what's happening with our family, but just like considering our family, but just like considering our family, but just like considering what it means to live abroad is that the what it means to live abroad is that the what it means to live abroad is that the rules can change on you at any moment rules can change on you at any moment rules can change on you at any moment and sometimes the rules can stay the and sometimes the rules can stay the and sometimes the rules can stay the same for you while they change for same for you while they change for same for you while they change for others and other times it can actually others and other times it can actually others and other times it can actually change for you as well. It could change for you as well. It could change for you as well. It could blindside you, but you have to just be blindside you, but you have to just be blindside you, but you have to just be aware that when you live abroad, until aware that when you live abroad, until aware that when you live abroad, until you become a citizen of that country, you become a citizen of that country, you become a citizen of that country, there are a lot of unpredictable things there are a lot of unpredictable things there are a lot of unpredictable things that you can't account for, that you that you can't account for, that you that you can't account for, that you can't freak out about, and that you just can't freak out about, and that you just can't freak out about, and that you just have to roll with the punches. And I have to roll with the punches. And I have to roll with the punches. And I feel like that's kind of my takeaway

  19. feel like that's kind of my takeaway feel like that's kind of my takeaway from from from >> one of the most recent law changes here. >> one of the most recent law changes here. >> one of the most recent law changes here. >> Yeah, the willingness to adapt and maybe >> Yeah, the willingness to adapt and maybe >> Yeah, the willingness to adapt and maybe the lower expectations on how you think the lower expectations on how you think the lower expectations on how you think things are going to be because I do things are going to be because I do things are going to be because I do think you get a little more upset if you think you get a little more upset if you think you get a little more upset if you have these certain expectations or high have these certain expectations or high have these certain expectations or high expectations and then it doesn't end up expectations and then it doesn't end up expectations and then it doesn't end up happening like that then it can almost happening like that then it can almost happening like that then it can almost feel like a that blindsides you. So feel like a that blindsides you. So feel like a that blindsides you. So >> You articulated that for me way better >> You articulated that for me way better >> You articulated that for me way better than I would have than I would have than I would have said it myself. said it myself. said it myself. >> low and the willingness to adapt and >> low and the willingness to adapt and >> low and the willingness to adapt and just understand that changes could just understand that changes could just understand that changes could happen. So maybe having a backup plan. happen. So maybe having a backup plan. happen. So maybe having a backup plan. If changes do happen, then what? Do we If changes do happen, then what? Do we If changes do happen, then what? Do we still like it enough here to stay and go still like it enough here to stay and go still like it enough here to stay and go with the changes or is it time to move with the changes or is it time to move with the changes or is it time to move on? Another big transformation for us is on? Another big transformation for us is on? Another big transformation for us is obviously since we have had a kid, life obviously since we have had a kid, life obviously since we have had a kid, life looks a lot different not only living looks a lot different not only living looks a lot different not only living here in Portugal but then how travel is here in Portugal but then how travel is here in Portugal but then how travel is and where we travel to. So as she gets and where we travel to. So as she gets and where we travel to. So as she gets older, she wants to see her cousins and older, she wants to see her cousins and older, she wants to see her cousins and where her cousins in the US. Now as where her cousins in the US. Now as where her cousins in the US. Now as we've been abroad, we've not taken our we've been abroad, we've not taken our we've been abroad, we've not taken our vacations or trips to the US very much vacations or trips to the US very much vacations or trips to the US very much because when we had that time, we wanted because when we had that time, we wanted because when we had that time, we wanted to go see other countries and that's why to go see other countries and that's why to go see other countries and that's why we have over 90 countries, closing in on we have over 90 countries, closing in on we have over 90 countries, closing in on 100 countries right now. So now though, 100 countries right now. So now though, 100 countries right now. So now though, she wants to see her cousins and so it she wants to see her cousins and so it she wants to see her cousins and so it feels like that transformation is we feels like that transformation is we feels like that transformation is we want to give that to her as well because want to give that to her as well because want to give that to her as well because we don't live around family so we want we don't live around family so we want we don't live around family so we want to at least travel there or try to to at least travel there or try to to at least travel there or try to coordinate meeting up somewhere. And coordinate meeting up somewhere. And coordinate meeting up somewhere. And travel also looks different when it's travel also looks different when it's travel also looks different when it's just the three of us because we find a just the three of us because we find a just the three of us because we find a lot more playgrounds in cities than we lot more playgrounds in cities than we lot more playgrounds in cities than we would have if we didn't have kids.

  20. would have if we didn't have kids. would have if we didn't have kids. >> Seen a lot. >> Seen a lot. >> Seen a lot. >> Things are slower, bags are bigger even >> Things are slower, bags are bigger even >> Things are slower, bags are bigger even though we only do carry-on still. You though we only do carry-on still. You though we only do carry-on still. You know, so adapting there when you have know, so adapting there when you have know, so adapting there when you have kids, you just got to roll with it. kids, you just got to roll with it. kids, you just got to roll with it. >> If you're into content about living >> If you're into content about living >> If you're into content about living abroad, make sure that you hit that abroad, make sure that you hit that abroad, make sure that you hit that subscribe button. Summary

The speakers reflect on their 17 years of living abroad, starting in 2009 in Spain, and how it has transformed their lives and made returning to the US difficult. They highlight how this experience forced them to become more independent, budget wisely, and embrace multiculturalism, leading to significant personal growth. The practical takeaway is that living abroad fosters self-reliance, financial prudence, and a broader worldview.
