And uh Uh Uh they came in and and when they came in and and when they came in and and when Russia and Germany split, when Hitler Russia and Germany split, when Hitler Russia and Germany split, when Hitler attacked Russia, attacked Russia, attacked Russia, they came back and later in the war, as they came back and later in the war, as they came back and later in the war, as they're coming through, they're running they're coming through, they're running they're coming through, they're running the German army out of Poland the German army out of Poland the German army out of Poland and back to Germany. Well, all the German officers German officers German officers knew that they could and probably would knew that they could and probably would knew that they could and probably would be be be uh tried for war crimes. So, they pieced it together from So, they pieced it together from So, they pieced it together from people's diaries, from personal letters, people's diaries, from personal letters, people's diaries, from personal letters, interviews with people who had lived interviews with people who had lived interviews with people who had lived through it and stuff like that. And I through it and stuff like that. And I through it and stuff like that. And I read a number of books and and uh read a number of books and and uh read a number of books and and uh the things that happened in this novel the things that happened in this novel the things that happened in this novel actually almost all of them There's a actually almost all of them There's a actually almost all of them There's a couple I conjured up for the story, but couple I conjured up for the story, but couple I conjured up for the story, but almost all of them actually happened in almost all of them actually happened in almost all of them actually happened in the war. I love the research part of it. I love love the research part of it. I love love the research part of it. I love learning about what actually happened, learning about what actually happened, learning about what actually happened, even though some of it was hard to to even though some of it was hard to to even though some of it was hard to to take, but take, but take, but I enjoyed the process. And uh the the I enjoyed the process. And uh the the I enjoyed the process. And uh the the one thing you have to do research on all one thing you have to do research on all one thing you have to do research on all books if you're going to be a serious books if you're going to be a serious books if you're going to be a serious writer. But on historical, you have to a writer. But on historical, you have to a writer. But on historical, you have to a lot more than you have to on science lot more than you have to on science lot more than you have to on science fiction. Now, some people love to do fiction. Now, some people love to do fiction. Now, some people love to do research like my wife, Dr. Charlotte research like my wife, Dr. Charlotte research like my wife, Dr. Charlotte Hughes. Uh I'm not wild about it, but I Hughes. Uh I'm not wild about it, but I Hughes. Uh I'm not wild about it, but I do it because I have to.
