I mean in in a nutshell that's what it is. But what it really is that's what it is. But what it really is that's what it is. But what it really is is an introduction to the landscape is an introduction to the landscape is an introduction to the landscape around you that you move through all around you that you move through all around you that you move through all your life but don't really see.

  4. your life but don't really see. your life but don't really see. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> And so um you talk about being the >> And so um you talk about being the >> And so um you talk about being the professional noticer. Well, that's kind professional noticer. Well, that's kind professional noticer. Well, that's kind of me out there. you know, I'm out there of me out there. you know, I'm out there of me out there. you know, I'm out there with nets and cameras and I've been out with nets and cameras and I've been out with nets and cameras and I've been out there for, you know, decades now. Um, there for, you know, decades now. Um, there for, you know, decades now. Um, and you know, I was a newspaper and you know, I was a newspaper and you know, I was a newspaper journalist. I was an environment journalist. I was an environment journalist. I was an environment reporter. Well, quickly when I got to reporter. Well, quickly when I got to reporter. Well, quickly when I got to the paper here, I was like the only the paper here, I was like the only the paper here, I was like the only reporter with a boat and a camera and I reporter with a boat and a camera and I reporter with a boat and a camera and I shot all my own pictures. And I quickly shot all my own pictures. And I quickly shot all my own pictures. And I quickly figured out if I went out in the delta figured out if I went out in the delta figured out if I went out in the delta and found something I could take a and found something I could take a and found something I could take a picture of and make a story out of, they picture of and make a story out of, they picture of and make a story out of, they were cool with me being out in the were cool with me being out in the were cool with me being out in the delta. And so I did more and more of delta. And so I did more and more of delta. And so I did more and more of that. And then they bought me a bigger that. And then they bought me a bigger that. And then they bought me a bigger boat. They bought me an underwater boat. They bought me an underwater boat. They bought me an underwater camera cuz I was a diver. So I used that camera cuz I was a diver. So I used that camera cuz I was a diver. So I used that experience to just you know build up experience to just you know build up experience to just you know build up this knowledge base and of course I was this knowledge base and of course I was this knowledge base and of course I was always writing going out with scientists always writing going out with scientists always writing going out with scientists writing about them. So I got to pick writing about them. So I got to pick writing about them. So I got to pick their brains you know and and so that's their brains you know and and so that's their brains you know and and so that's kind of the um I am going to show you kind of the um I am going to show you kind of the um I am going to show you multiple layers of the world around you. multiple layers of the world around you. multiple layers of the world around you. You know we all think of of Alabama You know we all think of of Alabama You know we all think of of Alabama based on um in the public mind like based on um in the public mind like based on um in the public mind like nationally Alabama is you know civil nationally Alabama is you know civil nationally Alabama is you know civil rights protests, cotton fields, steel rights protests, cotton fields, steel rights protests, cotton fields, steel mills and football. But those are just mills and football. But those are just mills and football. But those are just what we've done to Alabama and in what we've done to Alabama and in what we've done to Alabama and in Alabama. What Alabama is is the most Alabama. What Alabama is is the most Alabama. What Alabama is is the most diverse state in the United States. You diverse state in the United States. You diverse state in the United States. You know, this is the heart of American know, this is the heart of American know, this is the heart of American biodiversity right here in Alabama. More biodiversity right here in Alabama. More biodiversity right here in Alabama. More species of fish than any other state. Uh species of fish than any other state. Uh species of fish than any other state. Uh more species of of weird things like more species of of weird things like more species of of weird things like snails, more species of crawfish than snails, more species of crawfish than snails, more species of crawfish than anywhere else in the world. Turtle anywhere else in the world. Turtle anywhere else in the world. Turtle population in this delta. 17 turtle population in this delta. 17 turtle population in this delta. 17 turtle species. That's the most in any river species. That's the most in any river species. That's the most in any river delta on the planet. And so, you know, delta on the planet. And so, you know, delta on the planet. And so, you know, if you live around here, it's local, but

  5. if you live around here, it's local, but if you live around here, it's local, but you I guarantee you did not grow up you I guarantee you did not grow up you I guarantee you did not grow up understanding you were in one of the understanding you were in one of the understanding you were in one of the most biodiverse places in North America most biodiverse places in North America most biodiverse places in North America and in the world. And so, that's my and in the world. And so, that's my and in the world. And so, that's my whole mission is to, you know, make whole mission is to, you know, make whole mission is to, you know, make people think about Alabama differently people think about Alabama differently people think about Alabama differently because we need to preserve it. And because we need to preserve it. And because we need to preserve it. And Alabama has a terrible history of Alabama has a terrible history of Alabama has a terrible history of protecting its environment. And it protecting its environment. And it protecting its environment. And it partly because nobody understands how partly because nobody understands how partly because nobody understands how special it is. And so it's kind of my special it is. And so it's kind of my special it is. And so it's kind of my heart mission to make people see Alabama heart mission to make people see Alabama heart mission to make people see Alabama the way they see Yellowstone or Yusede, the way they see Yellowstone or Yusede, the way they see Yellowstone or Yusede, right? right? right? >> As somewhere you go to to see things you >> As somewhere you go to to see things you >> As somewhere you go to to see things you can't see anywhere else. can't see anywhere else. can't see anywhere else. >> Before we move ahead, I have to address >> Before we move ahead, I have to address >> Before we move ahead, I have to address the shirt. the shirt. the shirt. >> You You can't take your eyes off. >> You You can't take your eyes off. >> You You can't take your eyes off. >> I just can't. It's underwater, but you can the trip. It's underwater, but you can the trip. It's underwater, but you can see it on my bottom machine. and just see it on my bottom machine. and just see it on my bottom machine. and just the beautiful outline of it on the the beautiful outline of it on the the beautiful outline of it on the sidescan sonar. U and it's a really sidescan sonar. U and it's a really sidescan sonar. U and it's a really powerful experience to to be there and powerful experience to to be there and powerful experience to to be there and you know realize you know realize you know realize kind of what happened at that spot and kind of what happened at that spot and kind of what happened at that spot and what and how many people that happened what and how many people that happened what and how many people that happened to all over. You know there were 25,000 to all over. You know there were 25,000 to all over. You know there were 25,000 ships involved in the slave trade and we ships involved in the slave trade and we ships involved in the slave trade and we know the location of about seven and know the location of about seven and know the location of about seven and this is the only Yeah. This is the only this is the only Yeah. This is the only this is the only Yeah. This is the only intact wreck ever found. the only intact intact wreck ever found. the only intact intact wreck ever found. the only intact wreck of a slave ship ever found and wreck of a slave ship ever found and wreck of a slave ship ever found and it's the only one involved in the it's the only one involved in the it's the only one involved in the American trade ever found. Um, so it's American trade ever found. Um, so it's American trade ever found. Um, so it's pretty unique. You know, the Smithsonian pretty unique. You know, the Smithsonian pretty unique. You know, the Smithsonian >> and the book, you want to get the book?

  8. >> and the book, you want to get the book? >> and the book, you want to get the book? The last slave ship. The last slave ship. The last slave ship. >> Yes. Thank you. >> Yes. Thank you. >> Yes. Thank you. >> The last slave ship. I'm telling you, >> The last slave ship. I'm telling you, >> The last slave ship. I'm telling you, this is one of the books that you should this is one of the books that you should this is one of the books that you should read in your life. Okay. This is one of read in your life. Okay. This is one of read in your life. Okay. This is one of the books you should read for many the books you should read for many the books you should read for many different reasons. I think I I I I I different reasons. I think I I I I I different reasons. I think I I I I I know you think you know all you need to know you think you know all you need to know you think you know all you need to know about the slave trade. I think and know about the slave trade. I think and know about the slave trade. I think and and this is not this is not the typical and this is not this is not the typical and this is not this is not the typical book about it. I'm just telling you, book about it. I'm just telling you, book about it. I'm just telling you, you're going to learn some stuff you you're going to learn some stuff you you're going to learn some stuff you didn't know and it's incredibly didn't know and it's incredibly didn't know and it's incredibly interesting. interesting. interesting. >> Yeah. The the doing the research for >> Yeah. The the doing the research for >> Yeah. The the doing the research for that book, I was blown away over and that book, I was blown away over and that book, I was blown away over and over. I had no idea the things that I over. I had no idea the things that I over. I had no idea the things that I learned in the book about the learned in the book about the learned in the book about the involvement of the Africans and and the involvement of the Africans and and the involvement of the Africans and and the politics in America and all that. politics in America and all that. politics in America and all that. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And it it you know >> And it it you know >> And it it you know >> the importance of the people that were >> the importance of the people that were >> the importance of the people that were on the Clilda because it was the last on the Clilda because it was the last on the Clilda because it was the last ship to come in. It had been illegal to ship to come in. It had been illegal to ship to come in. It had been illegal to bring people in for 50 years. So at the bring people in for 50 years. So at the bring people in for 50 years. So at the time of the Civil War almost every time of the Civil War almost every time of the Civil War almost every enslaved person was born in America. Um enslaved person was born in America. Um enslaved person was born in America. Um and so these people came straight from and so these people came straight from and so these people came straight from Africa and they lived up to 1935. So we Africa and they lived up to 1935. So we Africa and they lived up to 1935. So we they told their stories to modern they told their stories to modern they told their stories to modern journalists. So this becomes, you know, journalists. So this becomes, you know, journalists. So this becomes, you know, our window in. These are some of the our window in. These are some of the our window in. These are some of the only people we have the voice of telling only people we have the voice of telling only people we have the voice of telling what happened to them when they were what happened to them when they were what happened to them when they were captured and and sold and and all of captured and and sold and and all of captured and and sold and and all of that. So it's a really unique window that. So it's a really unique window that. So it's a really unique window into, you know, the past and and into, you know, the past and and into, you know, the past and and >> so and on your tour you take them.

  9. >> so and on your tour you take them. >> so and on your tour you take them. >> We can go see Clint. >> We can go see Clint. >> We can go see Clint. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. >> Amazing. What like >> Amazing. What like >> Amazing. What like when you when you when you you you've been doing these tours for a you you've been doing these tours for a you you've been doing these tours for a while? while? while? >> Yeah, about 10 years. >> Yeah, about 10 years. >> Yeah, about 10 years. >> And so >> And so >> And so what have you noticed that has changed? what have you noticed that has changed? what have you noticed that has changed? You know, I mean, we we live kind of You know, I mean, we we live kind of You know, I mean, we we live kind of other end of the county from you and and other end of the county from you and and other end of the county from you and and so we have saltier water, but you know, so we have saltier water, but you know, so we have saltier water, but you know, still comes through your filter. still comes through your filter. still comes through your filter. >> Right. Right. and and I but in 10 years >> Right. Right. and and I but in 10 years >> Right. Right. and and I but in 10 years I've just seen a lot of changes. So what I've just seen a lot of changes. So what I've just seen a lot of changes. So what have you seen? have you seen? have you seen? >> And I'm seeing the same sort of changes >> And I'm seeing the same sort of changes >> And I'm seeing the same sort of changes I think you're talking about. Like we I think you're talking about. Like we I think you're talking about. Like we have new fish species that moved into have new fish species that moved into have new fish species that moved into the area. We Alabama just put in a snook the area. We Alabama just put in a snook the area. We Alabama just put in a snook limit for the first time ever this year limit for the first time ever this year limit for the first time ever this year cuz we got guides down here at the beach cuz we got guides down here at the beach cuz we got guides down here at the beach are catching 30 snook in a day. are catching 30 snook in a day. are catching 30 snook in a day. >> Well, that's a warm water fish that >> Well, that's a warm water fish that >> Well, that's a warm water fish that never lived north of Tampa until the never lived north of Tampa until the never lived north of Tampa until the last few years. And it's because the last few years. And it's because the last few years. And it's because the water's heating up. So we now have uh water's heating up. So we now have uh water's heating up. Up until the know, it's happening fast. Up until the know, it's happening fast. Up until the 1990s, all of our herands and um egrets 1990s, all of our herands and um egrets 1990s, all of our herands and um egrets migrated. Now they all stay the whole migrated. It's not too hot, it's not too state. It's not too hot, it's not too state. It's not too hot, it's not too cold, it's just right. Oh, cold, it's just right. Oh, cold, it's just right. Oh, >> okay. And that's the story and that goes >> okay. And that's the story and that goes >> okay. And that's the story and that goes back to the ice ages. So, you know, back to the ice ages. So, you know, back to the ice ages. So, you know, we've had multiple ice ages throughout we've had multiple ice ages throughout we've had multiple ice ages throughout history. Um, and and I mean, they happen history. Um, and and I mean, they happen history. Um, and and I mean, they happen about every 100,000 years. Um, and going about every 100,000 years. Um, and going about every 100,000 years. Um, and going back through all those, Alabama has back through all those, Alabama has back through all those, Alabama has always been in this spot where it never always been in this spot where it never always been in this spot where it never froze. You know, way the continents are froze. You know, way the continents are froze. You know, way the continents are moving around and things. So, the north, moving around and things. So, the north, moving around and things. So, the north, the last ice age, the one we're still the last ice age, the one we're still the last ice age, the one we're still warming up from, uh, most of America was warming up from, uh, most of America was warming up from, uh, most of America was under giant glaciers all the way down to under giant glaciers all the way down to under giant glaciers all the way down to Tennessee, but Alabama didn't freeze. So Tennessee, but Alabama didn't freeze. So Tennessee, but Alabama didn't freeze. So right where we are here in Orange Beach, right where we are here in Orange Beach, right where we are here in Orange Beach, it would have snowed every year and it

  13. it would have snowed every year and it it would have snowed every year and it would have been colder. Um, but it never would have been colder. Um, but it never would have been colder. Um, but it never froze. So everything that evolved in froze. So everything that evolved in froze. So everything that evolved in Alabama is still here. Whereas all up Alabama is still here. Whereas all up Alabama is still here. Whereas all up and down the east coast, the west coast and down the east coast, the west coast and down the east coast, the west coast that, you know, upper part of America, that, you know, upper part of America, that, you know, upper part of America, everything froze, you know, until 10,000 everything froze, you know, until 10,000 everything froze, you know, until 10,000 years ago. And so many many things went years ago. And so many many things went years ago. And so many many things went extinct during that period. Alabama was extinct during that period. Alabama was extinct during that period. Alabama was this refuge where after the everything this refuge where after the everything this refuge where after the everything started warming up, plants and creatures started warming up, plants and creatures started warming up, plants and creatures spread back up the Appalachian spine spread back up the Appalachian spine spread back up the Appalachian spine into the Midwest. We actually have more into the Midwest. We actually have more into the Midwest. We actually have more species of grass in Alabama than the species of grass in Alabama than the species of grass in Alabama than the Great Plains of America, you know, and Great Plains of America, you know, and Great Plains of America, you know, and and people don't know these things. Um and people don't know these things. Um and people don't know these things. Um because in a lot of ways nobody knew because in a lot of ways nobody knew because in a lot of ways nobody knew them until about 2002. Um and so we grew them until about 2002. Um and so we grew them until about 2002. Um and so we grew up hearing about Alabama based on all up hearing about Alabama based on all up hearing about Alabama based on all those industrial uses. You know, it was those industrial uses. You know, it was those industrial uses. You know, it was the one place, one of two places in the the one place, one of two places in the the one place, one of two places in the world where all the ingredients to make world where all the ingredients to make world where all the ingredients to make steel were. You know, it had coal, you steel were. You know, it had coal, you steel were. You know, it had coal, you know, all these things we extracted from know, all these things we extracted from know, all these things we extracted from the environment. 2002, the Nature the environment. 2002, the Nature the environment. 2002, the Nature Conservancy released this report uh Conservancy released this report uh Conservancy released this report uh called Nature Serve and it was a called Nature Serve and it was a called Nature Serve and it was a compendium of all species in every state compendium of all species in every state compendium of all species in every state by the states and it ranked them on by the states and it ranked them on by the states and it ranked them on diversity and Alabama was number five in diversity and Alabama was number five in diversity and Alabama was number five in overall diversity uh behind California, overall diversity uh behind California, overall diversity uh behind California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. But we Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. But we Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. But we were number one in all the aquatic were number one in all the aquatic were number one in all the aquatic species. Alabama leads the nation. Like species. Alabama leads the nation. Like species. Alabama leads the nation. Like we have almost 400 species of fish.

  14. we have almost 400 species of fish. we have almost 400 species of fish. California has 110. These are freshwater California has 110. These are freshwater California has 110. These are freshwater fish. Um we have 104 species of fish. Um we have 104 species of fish. Um we have 104 species of crawfish. California has nine. crawfish. California has nine. crawfish. California has nine. Washington state has one. You know, we Washington state has one. You know, we Washington state has one. You know, we we dominate these categories for this we dominate these categories for this we dominate these categories for this aquatic stuff. And it's because of these aquatic stuff. And it's because of these aquatic stuff. And it's because of these evolutionary things and because we have evolutionary things and because we have evolutionary things and because we have so many habitat types and all. So the so many habitat types and all. So the so many habitat types and all. So the overall diversity question, we now are overall diversity question, we now are overall diversity question, we now are number four. We were number five. We number four. We were number five. We number four. We were number five. We just knocked New Mexico off and we're just knocked New Mexico off and we're just knocked New Mexico off and we're about to knock Arizona off. Um, when I about to knock Arizona off. Um, when I about to knock Arizona off. Um, when I wrote my book, Saving America's Amazon, wrote my book, Saving America's Amazon, wrote my book, Saving America's Amazon, when I started writing the book, we had when I started writing the book, we had when I started writing the book, we had 84 crawfish species. By the time the 84 crawfish species. By the time the 84 crawfish species. By the time the book published a couple years later, we book published a couple years later, we book published a couple years later, we had 104. So, we are gaining new species had 104. So, we are gaining new species had 104. So, we are gaining new species all the time because science is catching all the time because science is catching all the time because science is catching up. There's so much stuff here and up. There's so much stuff here and up. There's so much stuff here and there's been so little scientific there's been so little scientific there's been so little scientific attention compared to places like the attention compared to places like the attention compared to places like the Northeast or California where you have Northeast or California where you have Northeast or California where you have all these big research universities. 17. and eats animals. and eats animals. You know, that's just incredible. Um, You know, that's just incredible. Um, You know, that's just incredible. Um, and and and you know, one of the most and and and you know, one of the most and and and you know, one of the most remarkable things about Alabama is remarkable things about Alabama is remarkable things about Alabama is carnivory. We are the center of carnivory. We are the center of carnivory. We are the center of carnivorous plants in America. You know, carnivorous plants in America. You know, carnivorous plants in America. Several of them live only in Alabama. Several of them live only in Alabama. Several of them live only in Alabama. There's some of them that are Alabama. There's some of them that are Alabama. There's some of them that are the rare, some of the rarest plants on the rare, some of the rarest plants on the rare, some of the rarest plants on Earth. There's one called the Cane Break Earth. And so what we found this is uh 10 miles so what we found this is uh 10 miles so what we found this is uh 10 miles offshore, 60 ft underwater after offshore, 60 ft underwater after offshore, 60 ft underwater after hurricane Ivan. Um the the hurricane hurricane Ivan. Um the the hurricane hurricane Ivan. Um the the hurricane waves scraped away layers of sand and it waves scraped away layers of sand and it waves scraped away layers of sand and it revealed this ancient forest and its revealed this ancient forest and its revealed this ancient forest and its cypress trees which are freshwater cypress trees which are freshwater cypress trees which are freshwater trees. Um and these trees are 70,000 trees. Um and these trees are 70,000 trees. Um and these trees are 70,000 years old. And what happened is uh when years old. And what happened is uh when years old. And what happened is uh when when the when the glaciers started when the when the glaciers started when the when the glaciers started melting, massive amounts of water rushed melting, massive amounts of water rushed melting, massive amounts of water rushed down across America and just flooded down across America and just flooded down across America and just flooded into the Gulf and it inundated these into the Gulf and it inundated these into the Gulf and it inundated these forests. And so the trees were actually forests. And so the trees were actually forests. And so the trees were actually overwhelmed with mud while they were overwhelmed with mud while they were overwhelmed with mud while they were still alive and the ocean rose up around still alive and the ocean rose up around still alive and the ocean rose up around them. And of course, the saltwater them. And of course, the saltwater them. And of course, the saltwater killed them. But being covered in the killed them. But being covered in the killed them. But being covered in the mud that was coming down uh buried them. mud that was coming down uh buried them. mud that was coming down uh buried them. And so underwater when you have about 6 And so underwater when you have about 6 And so underwater when you have about 6 in of sediment on something, there's no in of sediment on something, there's no in of sediment on something, there's no decay because there's no oxygen, meaning decay because there's no oxygen, meaning decay because there's no oxygen, meaning there's no rot. So when we started there's no rot. So when we started there's no rot. So when we started bringing these logs up off the bottom bringing these logs up off the bottom bringing these logs up off the bottom that you could peel the bark off them that you could peel the bark off them that you could peel the bark off them and when we cut into them with a saw, and when we cut into them with a saw, and when we cut into them with a saw, you could smell the sap, just this piny you could smell the sap, just this piny you could smell the sap, just this piny scent. And then when we let them sit in scent. And then when we let them sit in scent. And then when we let them sit in the sun, sap started oozing out of these the sun, sap started oozing out of these the sun, sap started oozing out of these 70,000 year old trees. So, you know, 70,000 year old trees. So, you know, 70,000 year old trees. So, you know, this is this climate window where we can this is this climate window where we can this is this climate window where we can study the trees and see what the how study the trees and see what the how study the trees and see what the how much carbon dioxide there was in the much carbon dioxide there was in the much carbon dioxide there was in the atmosphere. You know, all those kind of atmosphere. You know, all those kind of atmosphere. You know, all those kind of things you always hear about happening

  19. things you always hear about happening things you always hear about happening when we did sediment cores to we could when we did sediment cores to we could when we did sediment cores to we could we could find the pollen and the seeds we could find the pollen and the seeds we could find the pollen and the seeds of all the plants around. And we could of all the plants around. And we could of all the plants around. And we could see just what I mentioned a little bit see just what I mentioned a little bit see just what I mentioned a little bit ago about this area would have it would ago about this area would have it would ago about this area would have it would have snowed and all that. that forest have snowed and all that. that forest have snowed and all that. that forest 70,000 years ago, you know, 10 miles 70,000 years ago, you know, 10 miles 70,000 years ago, you know, 10 miles south of where the beach is now. To find south of where the beach is now. To find south of where the beach is now. To find a forest like that today with the same a forest like that today with the same a forest like that today with the same kind of plants and everything, you have kind of plants and everything, you have kind of plants and everything, you have to go to coastal Virginia to a place to go to coastal Virginia to a place to go to coastal Virginia to a place where it snows, where it's cold and all. where it snows, where it's cold and all. where it snows, where it's cold and all. It's not like a modern Gulf Coast It's not like a modern Gulf Coast It's not like a modern Gulf Coast forest. Um, because it was so much forest. Um, because it was so much forest. Um, because it was so much colder back then. So, it's just kind of colder back then. So, it's just kind of colder back then. So, it's just kind of this fascinating window into uh how this fascinating window into uh how this fascinating window into uh how climate works, what happens when sea climate works, what happens when sea climate works, what happens when sea levels rise, because that spot that's levels rise, because that spot that's levels rise, because that spot that's now, you know, 60 feet underwater, well, now, you know, 60 feet underwater, well, now, you know, 60 feet underwater, well, 100 million years ago, that would have 100 million years ago, that would have 100 million years ago, that would have been 360 ft underwater when all of been 360 ft underwater when all of been 360 ft underwater when all of Alabama was underwater. And so, it's Alabama was underwater. And so, it's Alabama was underwater. And so, it's been this really um cool window. And if been this really um cool window. And if been this really um cool window. And if you watch the film, you'll see us. We're you watch the film, you'll see us. We're you watch the film, you'll see us. We're 90 mi inland in the Sapulga River and 90 mi inland in the Sapulga River and 90 mi inland in the Sapulga River and we're we're gathering shark teeth out of we're we're gathering shark teeth out of we're we're gathering shark teeth out of the gravel of the river because that was the gravel of the river because that was the gravel of the river because that was the ocean. the ocean. the ocean. >> And you know, it's just one of those um >> And you know, it's just one of those um >> And you know, it's just one of those um the the underwater forest is incredibly the the underwater forest is incredibly the the underwater forest is incredibly cool. We worked really hard to get it uh cool. We worked really hard to get it uh cool. We worked really hard to get it uh turned into a national marine sanctuary.

  20. turned into a national marine sanctuary. turned into a national marine sanctuary. In the last Congress, we passed the In the last Congress, we passed the In the last Congress, we passed the Congress 379 to 18 and then senators Congress 379 to 18 and then senators Congress 379 to 18 and then senators refused to vote on it because one of our refused to vote on it because one of our refused to vote on it because one of our Alabama senators apparently blocked it Alabama senators apparently blocked it Alabama senators apparently blocked it from coming up for a vote from coming up for a vote from coming up for a vote and um Tommy Tubberville was its and um Tommy Tubberville was its and um Tommy Tubberville was its champion and um my champion and um my champion and um my >> that only leaves one. >> that only leaves one. >> that only leaves one. >> My understanding is the other one >> My understanding is the other one >> My understanding is the other one refused to let it come up for a vote. refused to let it come up for a vote. refused to let it come up for a vote. And when you think about getting And when you think about getting And when you think about getting something through our Congress these something through our Congress these something through our Congress these days, 379 to 18, well, it's a miracle, days, 379 to 18, well, it's a miracle, days, 379 to 18, well, it's a miracle, you know, I mean that the the bipartisan you know, I mean that the the bipartisan you know, I mean that the the bipartisan support I actually testified on Capitol support I actually testified on Capitol support I actually testified on Capitol Hill about this um to the Natural Hill about this um to the Natural Hill about this um to the Natural Resources Committee Resources Committee Resources Committee >> and because of the Senate, it's still >> and because of the Senate, it's still >> and because of the Senate, it's still not a national underwater national park. not a national underwater national park. not a national underwater national park. >> That's right. We got to start all over >> That's right. We got to start all over >> That's right. We got to start all over again. again. again. And so this has been a 10-year process. And so this has been a 10-year process. And so this has been a 10-year process. Um, you know, Bradley Burn blocked it Um, you know, Bradley Burn blocked it Um, you know, Bradley Burn blocked it for his eight years in office because he for his eight years in office because he for his eight years in office because he said he didn't want to give something of said he didn't want to give something of said he didn't want to give something of Alabama's away to the federal Alabama's away to the federal Alabama's away to the federal government. Well, of course, it's in government. Well, of course, it's in government. Well, of course, it's in federal water. It doesn't belong to federal water. It doesn't belong to federal water. It doesn't belong to Alabama, but Alabama would reap the Alabama, but Alabama would reap the Alabama, but Alabama would reap the rewards if it were opened up because rewards if it were opened up because rewards if it were opened up because national marine sanctuaries come with uh national marine sanctuaries come with uh national marine sanctuaries come with uh federal research money, and all of our federal research money, and all of our federal research money, and all of our Alabama colleges would be the closest Alabama colleges would be the closest Alabama colleges would be the closest ones that could take advantage of that ones that could take advantage of that ones that could take advantage of that money to research money to research money to research >> and to investigate. Sure. And it would >> and to investigate. Sure. And it would >> and to investigate. Sure. And it would also become an international destination also become an international destination also become an international destination for diving. There's nothing else like it for diving. There's nothing else like it for diving. There's nothing else like it in the world.

  21. in the world. in the world. >> Oh my gosh. Yeah. Do you know that the >> Oh my gosh. Yeah. Do you know that the >> Oh my gosh. Yeah. Do you know that the number one dive spot in the world now is number one dive spot in the world now is number one dive spot in the world now is that aircraft carrier song called that aircraft carrier song called that aircraft carrier song called Pensacola? Pensacola? Pensacola? >> The Ariskany. I've been there. >> The Ariskany. I've been there. >> The Ariskany. I've been there. >> And so to have I mean there's got to be >> And so to have I mean there's got to be >> And so to have I mean there's got to be other aircraft carriers, but there is other aircraft carriers, but there is other aircraft carriers, but there is only one underwater forest. only one underwater forest. only one underwater forest. >> Well, exactly. And if you go to the >> Well, exactly. And if you go to the >> Well, exactly. And if you go to the Ariskany, the big aircraft carrier, you Ariskany, the big aircraft carrier, you Ariskany, the big aircraft carrier, you know, it's got some barnacles and corals know, it's got some barnacles and corals know, it's got some barnacles and corals growing on it. And then you just see a growing on it. And then you just see a growing on it. And then you just see a bunch of sharks swimming around cuz bunch of sharks swimming around cuz bunch of sharks swimming around cuz they're all there cuz people fish on it. they're all there cuz people fish on it. they're all there cuz people fish on it. The underwater forest is like a coral The underwater forest is like a coral The underwater forest is like a coral reef. And if you watch the film, you'll reef. And if you watch the film, you'll reef. And if you watch the film, you'll see the amount of life there is just see the amount of life there is just see the amount of life there is just incredible because the Gulf of Mexico is incredible because the Gulf of Mexico is incredible because the Gulf of Mexico is a big sandy bowl. And so anytime there's a big sandy bowl. And so anytime there's a big sandy bowl. And so anytime there's some structure, you know, a rock some structure, you know, a rock some structure, you know, a rock outcropping or a sunk ship or whatever, outcropping or a sunk ship or whatever, outcropping or a sunk ship or whatever, it swarms with life. Well, the forest, it swarms with life. Well, the forest, it swarms with life.
