Read full transcript 31 segments
  1. In this video, we're going to be doing In this video, we're going to be doing something I should have done a very long something I should have done a very long something I should have done a very long time ago, and that is building a proper time ago, and that is building a proper time ago, and that is building a proper backup solution. You've probably heard backup solution. You've probably heard backup solution. You've probably heard of the 3-2-1 backup principle. That is of the 3-2-1 backup principle. That is of the 3-2-1 backup principle. That is three copies of your data, two different three copies of your data, two different three copies of your data, two different forms of media, and one of those copies forms of media, and one of those copies forms of media, and one of those copies being offsite. And for the first time in being offsite. And for the first time in being offsite. And for the first time in my life, I am actually going to be doing my life, I am actually going to be doing my life, I am actually going to be doing this, like I said, properly. Now, this this, like I said, properly. Now, this this, like I said, properly. Now, this is actually a pretty big project, so I'm is actually a pretty big project, so I'm is actually a pretty big project, so I'm going to be splitting this into a going to be splitting this into a going to be splitting this into a multi-part series. Right here is going multi-part series. Right here is going multi-part series. Right here is going to be part one, which this video is to be part one, which this video is to be part one, which this video is going to be kind of the full initial going to be kind of the full initial going to be kind of the full initial setup. We're going to build the main setup. We're going to build the main setup. We're going to build the main backup machine, get it to backing up the backup machine, get it to backing up the backup machine, get it to backing up the home lab, and setting up an offsite copy home lab, and setting up an offsite copy home lab, and setting up an offsite copy in the cloud with S3. By the end of this in the cloud with S3. By the end of this in the cloud with S3. By the end of this video, you're going to have a real video, you're going to have a real video, you're going to have a real working backup system. Part two is going working backup system. Part two is going working backup system. Part two is going to be all about your data, restoring, to be all about your data, restoring, to be all about your data, restoring, doing rollbacks when something goes doing rollbacks when something goes doing rollbacks when something goes sideways, setting up notifications so sideways, setting up notifications so sideways, setting up notifications so you actually know when a backup fails, you actually know when a backup fails, you actually know when a backup fails, and a few other handy features. And part and a few other handy features. And part and a few other handy features. And part three is going to be a fun one, cuz three is going to be a fun one, cuz three is going to be a fun one, cuz we're going to be spinning up another we're going to be spinning up another we're going to be spinning up another machine and take it offsite to a family machine and take it offsite to a family machine and take it offsite to a family member's house and connect it all the member's house and connect it all the member's house and connect it all the way back back here, peer-to-peer with way back back here, peer-to-peer with way back back here, peer-to-peer with NetBird. So, not only will we have a NetBird. So, not only will we have a NetBird. So, not only will we have a copy way in the cloud that I don't copy way in the cloud that I don't copy way in the cloud that I don't control, I'll have an offsite copy that control, I'll have an offsite copy that control, I'll have an offsite copy that I do have some control of. Put all that I do have some control of. Put all that I do have some control of. Put all that together and we're past the 3-2-1, we're together and we're past the 3-2-1, we're together and we're past the 3-2-1, we're going 4-3-2-1. Four copies of data, going 4-3-2-1. Four copies of data, going 4-3-2-1. Four copies of data, three You get the point. And of course, three You get the point. And of course, three You get the point. And of course, for this one, we're going to be using for this one, we're going to be using for this one, we're going to be using Proxmox Backup Server. And do note that Proxmox Backup Server. And do note that Proxmox Backup Server. And do note that you do not need to run Proxmox Virtual you do not need to run Proxmox Virtual you do not need to run Proxmox Virtual Environment in conjunction with this.

  2. Environment in conjunction with this. Environment in conjunction with this. It's going to give you some really cool It's going to give you some really cool It's going to give you some really cool features. It's native, but it's features. It's native, but it's features. It's native, but it's completely optional. So, whether if completely optional. So, whether if completely optional. So, whether if you're running PVE, Unraid, TrueNAS, you're running PVE, Unraid, TrueNAS, you're running PVE, Unraid, TrueNAS, bare metal Linux, there's a way to back bare metal Linux, there's a way to back bare metal Linux, there's a way to back up this data into Proxmox Backup Server, up this data into Proxmox Backup Server, up this data into Proxmox Backup Server, do rollbacks, and all of that. Clearly, do rollbacks, and all of that. Clearly, do rollbacks, and all of that. Clearly, repurposing like a desktop computer or repurposing like a desktop computer or repurposing like a desktop computer or something like that, or building it something like that, or building it something like that, or building it yourself is going to be more yourself is going to be more yourself is going to be more cost-effective. But, if you do want to cost-effective. But, if you do want to cost-effective. But, if you do want to use an NAS, I do recommend either the use an NAS, I do recommend either the use an NAS, I do recommend either the Ugreen ones or the Minisforum or Ugreen ones or the Minisforum or Ugreen ones or the Minisforum or Minisforum NASes. Two main reasons Minisforum NASes. Two main reasons Minisforum NASes. Two main reasons behind this, they really are integrated behind this, they really are integrated behind this, they really are integrated and support the home lab community. And and support the home lab community. And and support the home lab community. And two, you can actually install Proxmox two, you can actually install Proxmox two, you can actually install Proxmox Backup Server bare metal right into some Backup Server bare metal right into some Backup Server bare metal right into some of these NASes, which you cannot do with of these NASes, which you cannot do with of these NASes, which you cannot do with some of their counterparts. But, some of their counterparts. But, some of their counterparts. But, speaking of hardware, the only you are speaking of hardware, the only you are speaking of hardware, the only you are going to know how much storage you need. going to know how much storage you need. going to know how much storage you need. I have a comical amount of movies and TV I have a comical amount of movies and TV I have a comical amount of movies and TV shows. I will not be backing those up. shows. I will not be backing those up. shows. I will not be backing those up. I'll primarily be focusing on backing up I'll primarily be focusing on backing up I'll primarily be focusing on backing up like photos, documents, things like like photos, documents, things like like photos, documents, things like that. So, I have multiple terabytes of that. So, I have multiple terabytes of that. So, I have multiple terabytes of things to back up. So, for things to back up. So, for things to back up. So, for future-proofing, I'm going to be using future-proofing, I'm going to be using future-proofing, I'm going to be using six 4-terabyte drives in this NAS. I'll six 4-terabyte drives in this NAS. I'll six 4-terabyte drives in this NAS. I'll be setting up parity, so four of the be setting up parity, so four of the be setting up parity, so four of the drives will be usable. That for my drives will be usable. That for my drives will be usable. That for my setup, that's going to be good. I do setup, that's going to be good. I do setup, that's going to be good. I do recommend that a a bare minimum you have recommend that a a bare minimum you have recommend that a a bare minimum you have two spinning disk drives, so that way two spinning disk drives, so that way two spinning disk drives, so that way you can at least mirror them. But, we you can at least mirror them. But, we you can at least mirror them. But, we will talk a little bit more about uh will talk a little bit more about uh will talk a little bit more about uh RAID levels and pairing in a little bit.

  3. RAID levels and pairing in a little bit. RAID levels and pairing in a little bit. So, I've already kind of talked about So, I've already kind of talked about So, I've already kind of talked about what we're going to be doing in this what we're going to be doing in this what we're going to be doing in this video. There are chapters down below if video. There are chapters down below if video. There are chapters down below if you want to skip or go right to certain you want to skip or go right to certain you want to skip or go right to certain sections. From installing Proxmox to sections. From installing Proxmox to sections. From installing Proxmox to getting that S3 compatible storage getting that S3 compatible storage getting that S3 compatible storage setup. Which, speaking of S3, this video setup. Which, speaking of S3, this video setup. Which, speaking of S3, this video is sponsored by MEGA, an organization is sponsored by MEGA, an organization is sponsored by MEGA, an organization that focuses on privacy and secure cloud that focuses on privacy and secure cloud that focuses on privacy and secure cloud storage. They've got a whole bunch of storage. They've got a whole bunch of storage. They've got a whole bunch of different tools, ranging from basic different tools, ranging from basic different tools, ranging from basic cloud storage, VPN, password manager. cloud storage, VPN, password manager. cloud storage, VPN, password manager. But, what we're going to be focusing on But, what we're going to be focusing on But, what we're going to be focusing on in this video is their MEGA S4, their S3 in this video is their MEGA S4, their S3 in this video is their MEGA S4, their S3 compatible object storage. Later on in compatible object storage. Later on in compatible object storage. Later on in this video, inside of Proxmox Backup this video, inside of Proxmox Backup this video, inside of Proxmox Backup Server, we are going to be setting up S3 Server, we are going to be setting up S3 Server, we are going to be setting up S3 compatible storage offsite, and MEGA S4 compatible storage offsite, and MEGA S4 compatible storage offsite, and MEGA S4 is going to handle this for us. MEGA has is going to handle this for us. MEGA has is going to handle this for us. MEGA has partners that include TrueNAS, Synology. partners that include TrueNAS, Synology. partners that include TrueNAS, Synology. Your data is encrypted at rest, 99.9% Your data is encrypted at rest, 99.9% Your data is encrypted at rest, 99.9% uptime, over 300 million users, and they uptime, over 300 million users, and they uptime, over 300 million users, and they hooked up Tech Hut viewers with an hooked up Tech Hut viewers with an hooked up Tech Hut viewers with an exclusive deal, their Pro 2 plan at the exclusive deal, their Pro 2 plan at the exclusive deal, their Pro 2 plan at the Pro 1 price. So, that is 10 terabytes of Pro 1 price. So, that is 10 terabytes of Pro 1 price. So, that is 10 terabytes of storage for 10 bucks a month. If you're storage for 10 bucks a month. If you're storage for 10 bucks a month. If you're interested, there's a link in the interested, there's a link in the interested, there's a link in the description. So, now let's go and description. So, now let's go and description. So, now let's go and actually get this set up. I've already actually get this set up. I've already actually get this set up. I've already downloaded Proxmox Backup Server. I've downloaded Proxmox Backup Server. I've downloaded Proxmox Backup Server. I've already flashed the USB. And if you need already flashed the USB. And if you need already flashed the USB. And if you need to do that, if you're on Linux, just to do that, if you're on Linux, just to do that, if you're on Linux, just open up Gnome Disks and restore the disk open up Gnome Disks and restore the disk open up Gnome Disks and restore the disk image to it. If you're on Windows, use image to it. If you're on Windows, use image to it. If you're on Windows, use Rufus. If you're on macOS, use Balena Rufus. If you're on macOS, use Balena Rufus. If you're on macOS, use Balena Etcher. Of course, if there's anything Etcher. Of course, if there's anything Etcher. Of course, if there's anything on the USB, it's going to wipe on the USB, it's going to wipe on the USB, it's going to wipe everything, so do back up first, and everything, so do back up first, and everything, so do back up first, and then you're going to grab your USB and then you're going to grab your USB and then you're going to grab your USB and plug it into the machine that you're plug it into the machine that you're plug it into the machine that you're going to be installing this on. To make going to be installing this on. To make going to be installing this on. To make sure that your machine has an NVMe SSD, sure that your machine has an NVMe SSD, sure that your machine has an NVMe SSD, you're going to want that for the boot you're going to want that for the boot you're going to want that for the boot drive in addition to your at least two

  4. drive in addition to your at least two drive in addition to your at least two two disk drives for backup storage. And two disk drives for backup storage. And two disk drives for backup storage. And when you first boot into the USB, you're when you first boot into the USB, you're when you first boot into the USB, you're going to get a screen that looks a going to get a screen that looks a going to get a screen that looks a little bit like this. We are going to go little bit like this. We are going to go little bit like this. We are going to go with the graphical install, and then go with the graphical install, and then go with the graphical install, and then go ahead and give it a minute, wait for ahead and give it a minute, wait for ahead and give it a minute, wait for that to boot on up. So, first of course that to boot on up. So, first of course that to boot on up. So, first of course you have a little EULA to go ahead and you have a little EULA to go ahead and you have a little EULA to go ahead and skim through and agree to. So, I'm going skim through and agree to. So, I'm going skim through and agree to. So, I'm going to say I agree. Now here, this is where to say I agree. Now here, this is where to say I agree. Now here, this is where we're going to go ahead and select the we're going to go ahead and select the we're going to go ahead and select the hard drive or the SSD that you want to hard drive or the SSD that you want to hard drive or the SSD that you want to install this on. Please pick an SSD. You install this on. Please pick an SSD. You install this on. Please pick an SSD. You can see here if I cycle through these, I can see here if I cycle through these, I can see here if I cycle through these, I have my 1 2 3 4 5 6 have my 1 2 3 4 5 6 have my 1 2 3 4 5 6 4 TB drives and my single NVMe SSD. If 4 TB drives and my single NVMe SSD. If 4 TB drives and my single NVMe SSD. If you want to, if you have another SSD in you want to, if you have another SSD in you want to, if you have another SSD in there, you could go to options and add there, you could go to options and add there, you could go to options and add that or change the file system here to a that or change the file system here to a that or change the file system here to a ZFS system if you want to have a ZFS system if you want to have a ZFS system if you want to have a mirrored drive for your boot drive, but mirrored drive for your boot drive, but mirrored drive for your boot drive, but for our case, EXT4 is going to be for our case, EXT4 is going to be for our case, EXT4 is going to be perfect, so we are going to go next. And perfect, so we are going to go next. And perfect, so we are going to go next. And now here, go ahead and pick your now here, go ahead and pick your now here, go ahead and pick your country, your time zone, all that fun country, your time zone, all that fun country, your time zone, all that fun stuff. And now for the password, make it stuff. And now for the password, make it stuff. And now for the password, make it super strong and secure of course. And super strong and secure of course. And super strong and secure of course. And then for email, you're just going to then for email, you're just going to then for email, you're just going to want to put in an actual want to put in an actual want to put in an actual valid email address here, and then go valid email address here, and then go valid email address here, and then go next. And next is the network next. And next is the network next. And next is the network configuration. Fortunately for me, it configuration. Fortunately for me, it configuration. Fortunately for me, it auto detected my network and filled auto detected my network and filled auto detected my network and filled everything out. For the host name, it's everything out. For the host name, it's everything out. For the host name, it's just going to be Let's change mine just going to be Let's change mine just going to be Let's change mine actually. I'm going to call this my actually. I'm going to call this my actually. I'm going to call this my UGREEN machine, and I'm one that's UGREEN machine, and I'm one that's UGREEN machine, and I'm one that's partial to .lan for my cases. So, you partial to .lan for my cases. So, you partial to .lan for my cases. So, you can change that to whatever you want, can change that to whatever you want, can change that to whatever you want, whatever it allows you to.

  5. whatever it allows you to. whatever it allows you to. Keep all of this as is. You can change Keep all of this as is. You can change Keep all of this as is. You can change your IP here if you want to. So, from your IP here if you want to. So, from your IP here if you want to. So, from there we could go ahead and go next. there we could go ahead and go next. there we could go ahead and go next. Here, it's going to give us a nice Here, it's going to give us a nice Here, it's going to give us a nice little summary of everything we got little summary of everything we got little summary of everything we got going on. So, all we need to do is one, going on. So, all we need to do is one, going on. So, all we need to do is one, verify that everything looks good, and verify that everything looks good, and verify that everything looks good, and then click install. So, now it's going then click install. So, now it's going then click install. So, now it's going to wipe all the partitions, everything to wipe all the partitions, everything to wipe all the partitions, everything like that. And when it is done, you're like that. And when it is done, you're like that. And when it is done, you're going to get this showing you what the going to get this showing you what the going to get this showing you what the port and IP address is. But, boom, it's port and IP address is. But, boom, it's port and IP address is. But, boom, it's automatically going to reboot for us. automatically going to reboot for us. automatically going to reboot for us. And there we go, we have our IP address And there we go, we have our IP address And there we go, we have our IP address there. So, now all we're going to need there. So, now all we're going to need there. So, now all we're going to need to do is uh travel on over to it. Do to do is uh travel on over to it. Do to do is uh travel on over to it. Do note, this is going to be HTTPS, so note, this is going to be HTTPS, so note, this is going to be HTTPS, so let's hit enter. And here, we're going let's hit enter. And here, we're going let's hit enter. And here, we're going to go advanced and proceed. This is our to go advanced and proceed. This is our to go advanced and proceed. This is our server, we know what's going on here. server, we know what's going on here. server, we know what's going on here. And then let's zoom on in so we can And then let's zoom on in so we can And then let's zoom on in so we can actually see what's going on. Default is actually see what's going on. Default is actually see what's going on. Default is going to be root at whatever you typed going to be root at whatever you typed going to be root at whatever you typed in as your password. And then just like in as your password. And then just like in as your password. And then just like that, we are in. So, there's a couple that, we are in. So, there's a couple that, we are in. So, there's a couple minor things that we're going to do post minor things that we're going to do post minor things that we're going to do post installation before we go ahead and get installation before we go ahead and get installation before we go ahead and get into actually creating our backups. And into actually creating our backups. And into actually creating our backups. And what I like to do, or what I find to be what I like to do, or what I find to be what I like to do, or what I find to be the easiest, is head on over to this the easiest, is head on over to this the easiest, is head on over to this site right here, Proxmox Helper Scripts.

  6. site right here, Proxmox Helper Scripts. site right here, Proxmox Helper Scripts. These aren't just for Proxmox VE, if we These aren't just for Proxmox VE, if we These aren't just for Proxmox VE, if we go over to categories under Proxmox and go over to categories under Proxmox and go over to categories under Proxmox and virtualization, you can see here we have virtualization, you can see here we have virtualization, you can see here we have the PBS post install. So, we're going to the PBS post install. So, we're going to the PBS post install. So, we're going to grab this, give that a copy. grab this, give that a copy. grab this, give that a copy. And then go over to our Proxmox backup And then go over to our Proxmox backup And then go over to our Proxmox backup server. Under administration, we're server. Under administration, we're server. Under administration, we're going to go to the shell, and then go going to go to the shell, and then go going to go to the shell, and then go ahead and drop that in. So, once we hit ahead and drop that in. So, once we hit ahead and drop that in. So, once we hit enter, it's going to ask us a couple of enter, it's going to ask us a couple of enter, it's going to ask us a couple of questions. In addition to just updating, questions. In addition to just updating, questions. In addition to just updating, this is also going to change our this is also going to change our this is also going to change our repositories. So, it's going to remove repositories. So, it's going to remove repositories. So, it's going to remove those enterprise repositories, it's those enterprise repositories, it's those enterprise repositories, it's going to get rid of that pop-up nag going to get rid of that pop-up nag going to get rid of that pop-up nag thing that it does. So, we're going to thing that it does. So, we're going to thing that it does. So, we're going to go ahead and start this with a yes, and go ahead and start this with a yes, and go ahead and start this with a yes, and then here we are going to say yes. We're then here we are going to say yes. We're then here we are going to say yes. We're going to say yes to basically going to say yes to basically going to say yes to basically everything. So, do I want to disable everything. So, do I want to disable everything. So, do I want to disable enterprise stuff? Yes. Do I want to enterprise stuff? Yes. Do I want to enterprise stuff? Yes. Do I want to disable the nag? Yes. Of course, to disable the nag? Yes. Of course, to disable the nag? Yes. Of course, to support the software if you're able to. support the software if you're able to. support the software if you're able to. Continue. And do we want to update it Continue. And do we want to update it Continue. And do we want to update it now? Sure thing. So, that may take just now? Sure thing. So, that may take just now? Sure thing. So, that may take just a minute or two. And there we go, post a minute or two. And there we go, post a minute or two. And there we go, post install reminder. This is only backing install reminder. This is only backing install reminder. This is only backing up this or updating this one node, it's up this or updating this one node, it's up this or updating this one node, it's just a little reminder of that. And it's just a little reminder of that. And it's just a little reminder of that. And it's going to recommend a restart, so we will going to recommend a restart, so we will going to recommend a restart, so we will do that. Again, I have this hooked into do that. Again, I have this hooked into do that. Again, I have this hooked into a KVM, so I can actually kind of monitor a KVM, so I can actually kind of monitor a KVM, so I can actually kind of monitor this remotely, which is nice. And by this remotely, which is nice. And by this remotely, which is nice. And by remotely, it's just downstairs with my remotely, it's just downstairs with my remotely, it's just downstairs with my server rack. And there we go. So, it's server rack. And there we go. So, it's server rack. And there we go. So, it's all rebooted. We can go back over here, all rebooted. We can go back over here, all rebooted. We can go back over here, give this a refresh, and yay, we're in.

  7. give this a refresh, and yay, we're in. give this a refresh, and yay, we're in. So, next we're going to check the chrony So, next we're going to check the chrony So, next we're going to check the chrony time sync. It's kind of important. It time sync. It's kind of important. It time sync. It's kind of important. It drives the retention math, and we want drives the retention math, and we want drives the retention math, and we want this locked in before really anything this locked in before really anything this locked in before really anything else. So, we're just going to do else. So, we're just going to do else. So, we're just going to do chrony tracking, hit enter. And if you chrony tracking, hit enter. And if you chrony tracking, hit enter. And if you have a two or three here, you're usually have a two or three here, you're usually have a two or three here, you're usually good to go. If you ever need to edit good to go. If you ever need to edit good to go. If you ever need to edit this, it is just in the this, it is just in the this, it is just in the Etsy chrony chrony.conf Etsy chrony chrony.conf Etsy chrony chrony.conf right here. So, if you need to change right here. So, if you need to change right here. So, if you need to change it, that's where you're going to go it, that's where you're going to go it, that's where you're going to go ahead and do it. So, now like I said, ahead and do it. So, now like I said, ahead and do it. So, now like I said, we're really going to be focusing on we're really going to be focusing on we're really going to be focusing on actual backups for this video. So, I'm actual backups for this video. So, I'm actual backups for this video. So, I'm not going to really mess with the not going to really mess with the not going to really mess with the notifications or anything like that now. notifications or anything like that now. notifications or anything like that now. That will be the next part. So, we're That will be the next part. So, we're That will be the next part. So, we're going to standard administration, we're going to standard administration, we're going to standard administration, we're going to dive into storage and disks. going to dive into storage and disks. going to dive into storage and disks. You can see I have a bunch of disks You can see I have a bunch of disks You can see I have a bunch of disks here. Right there is the NVMe SSD. We're here. Right there is the NVMe SSD. We're here. Right there is the NVMe SSD. We're not going to touch that. But what I'm not going to touch that. But what I'm not going to touch that. But what I'm going to want to do is actually wipe all going to want to do is actually wipe all going to want to do is actually wipe all these cuz I'm going to make a new ZFS these cuz I'm going to make a new ZFS these cuz I'm going to make a new ZFS array. Do note, of course, if you have array. Do note, of course, if you have array. Do note, of course, if you have any data on these disks, it's about to any data on these disks, it's about to any data on these disks, it's about to all go bye-bye. So, do make sure all go bye-bye. So, do make sure all go bye-bye. So, do make sure anything that is important is backed up anything that is important is backed up anything that is important is backed up elsewhere. So, let's just start wiping elsewhere. So, let's just start wiping elsewhere. So, let's just start wiping all the disks. Now, this may take some all the disks. Now, this may take some all the disks. Now, this may take some time. Okay, not that bad. I'm going to time. Okay, not that bad. I'm going to time. Okay, not that bad. I'm going to do that for all six drives I have in do that for all six drives I have in do that for all six drives I have in here. And here is the last one. So, now here. And here is the last one. So, now here. And here is the last one. So, now that our drives are basically about that our drives are basically about that our drives are basically about wiped, we're going to want to make that wiped, we're going to want to make that wiped, we're going to want to make that ZFS array. Now, I kind of explained this ZFS array. Now, I kind of explained this ZFS array. Now, I kind of explained this in the beginning, but this is real nice in the beginning, but this is real nice in the beginning, but this is real nice because if we have a drive or two fail, because if we have a drive or two fail, because if we have a drive or two fail, we will still have to save our data just we will still have to save our data just we will still have to save our data just by swapping it out and running a couple by swapping it out and running a couple by swapping it out and running a couple commands. This isn't a full ZFS guide, commands. This isn't a full ZFS guide, commands. This isn't a full ZFS guide, and I'm not going to go too far into how and I'm not going to go too far into how and I'm not going to go too far into how what one you should select. I'm going to what one you should select. I'm going to what one you should select. I'm going to select select select Let's just get into it so I could show Let's just get into it so I could show Let's just get into it so I could show you. If we go over here to ZFS, we're

  8. you. If we go over here to ZFS, we're you. If we go over here to ZFS, we're going to create new ZFS. We have all of going to create new ZFS. We have all of going to create new ZFS. We have all of our drives here. I'm going to select all our drives here. I'm going to select all our drives here. I'm going to select all of them except for this flash drive. So, of them except for this flash drive. So, of them except for this flash drive. So, you can see I have six 4 TB drives. you can see I have six 4 TB drives. you can see I have six 4 TB drives. Don't want this one either. 2 3 4 5 6. Don't want this one either. 2 3 4 5 6. Don't want this one either. 2 3 4 5 6. What I'm going to do is I'm going to What I'm going to do is I'm going to What I'm going to do is I'm going to call this something like vault. This is call this something like vault. This is call this something like vault. This is my vault and RAID level. Right now it's my vault and RAID level. Right now it's my vault and RAID level. Right now it's set to single disk. You could mirror it. set to single disk. You could mirror it. set to single disk. You could mirror it. I like to do either RAID Z or RAID Z2 I like to do either RAID Z or RAID Z2 I like to do either RAID Z or RAID Z2 depending on risk tolerance. So if I do depending on risk tolerance. So if I do depending on risk tolerance. So if I do RAID Z, I'll have an extra 4 terabytes RAID Z, I'll have an extra 4 terabytes RAID Z, I'll have an extra 4 terabytes of space available to me, but if two of space available to me, but if two of space available to me, but if two drives fail, I'm cooked because I only drives fail, I'm cooked because I only drives fail, I'm cooked because I only have one parity drive. If I go RAID Z2, have one parity drive. If I go RAID Z2, have one parity drive. If I go RAID Z2, I lose 4 terabytes, but I also um not I lose 4 terabytes, but I also um not I lose 4 terabytes, but I also um not going to lose my data if a drive or if going to lose my data if a drive or if going to lose my data if a drive or if uh two drives fail on me. So it's really uh two drives fail on me. So it's really uh two drives fail on me. So it's really just about risk tolerance. Later on just about risk tolerance. Later on just about risk tolerance. Later on we're going to be backing up data to the we're going to be backing up data to the we're going to be backing up data to the cloud, so if you have it spread out on cloud, so if you have it spread out on cloud, so if you have it spread out on multiple sources, you might take the multiple sources, you might take the multiple sources, you might take the extra storage. It's all dependent on extra storage. It's all dependent on extra storage. It's all dependent on what you want to do. For me, I'm going what you want to do. For me, I'm going what you want to do. For me, I'm going to go the more recommended route and to go the more recommended route and to go the more recommended route and have two parity drives, so I should have have two parity drives, so I should have have two parity drives, so I should have about 10 terabytes uh of data to work about 10 terabytes uh of data to work about 10 terabytes uh of data to work with here. So make sure we add it as a with here. So make sure we add it as a with here. So make sure we add it as a data store, compression on. LZ4 is kind data store, compression on. LZ4 is kind data store, compression on. LZ4 is kind of the default or you could do a ZSTB.

  9. of the default or you could do a ZSTB. of the default or you could do a ZSTB. Takes a little bit more system Takes a little bit more system Takes a little bit more system resources, but has a better compression resources, but has a better compression resources, but has a better compression ratio. I just put it as on to keep the ratio. I just put it as on to keep the ratio. I just put it as on to keep the default. So we will go create and just default. So we will go create and just default. So we will go create and just give that a minute to do what it's got give that a minute to do what it's got give that a minute to do what it's got to do. Now as I mentioned when we were to do. Now as I mentioned when we were to do. Now as I mentioned when we were installing it, I only have one NVMe SSD installing it, I only have one NVMe SSD installing it, I only have one NVMe SSD in the system, but if you have in the system, but if you have in the system, but if you have multiples, now's a good opportunity multiples, now's a good opportunity multiples, now's a good opportunity before you start adding a bunch of data before you start adding a bunch of data before you start adding a bunch of data to this to add like cache drives or just to this to add like cache drives or just to this to add like cache drives or just a VDEV for your hard drive pools. It's a VDEV for your hard drive pools. It's a VDEV for your hard drive pools. It's not in the UI, you have to do the not in the UI, you have to do the not in the UI, you have to do the terminal, but the article that I'm going terminal, but the article that I'm going terminal, but the article that I'm going to link to will go over some of those uh to link to will go over some of those uh to link to will go over some of those uh more more details and some steps. So now more more details and some steps. So now more more details and some steps. So now what we're going to want to do is create what we're going to want to do is create what we're going to want to do is create some namespaces. So if we go over here some namespaces. So if we go over here some namespaces. So if we go over here under vault, I believe, and then go over under vault, I believe, and then go over under vault, I believe, and then go over to content, we have namespaces. Now to content, we have namespaces. Now to content, we have namespaces. Now namespaces are uh basically separation namespaces are uh basically separation namespaces are uh basically separation from your different backup sources. You from your different backup sources. You from your different backup sources. You technically could just dump everything technically could just dump everything technically could just dump everything in vault, but we don't really want to do in vault, but we don't really want to do in vault, but we don't really want to do that. First, I'm going to make a that. First, I'm going to make a that. First, I'm going to make a separate namespace for the actual separate namespace for the actual separate namespace for the actual Proxmox virtual environment machine that Proxmox virtual environment machine that Proxmox virtual environment machine that I have. So I'll do PVE and this is on a I have. So I'll do PVE and this is on a I have. So I'll do PVE and this is on a uh Minisforum mini PC, so I'll create uh Minisforum mini PC, so I'll create uh Minisforum mini PC, so I'll create that namespace. And then before I was that namespace. And then before I was that namespace. And then before I was creating a namespace for like my entire creating a namespace for like my entire creating a namespace for like my entire unraid machine, but I think I'm going to unraid machine, but I think I'm going to unraid machine, but I think I'm going to go about this a little bit differently go about this a little bit differently go about this a little bit differently for this video. And I'm going to make a for this video. And I'm going to make a for this video. And I'm going to make a new namespace just for demonstration new namespace just for demonstration new namespace just for demonstration purposes. I'm going to call this um purposes. I'm going to call this um purposes. I'm going to call this um unraid-image.

  10. unraid-image. unraid-image. And this is going to be done through a And this is going to be done through a And this is going to be done through a Docker container. So, I'm going to Docker container. So, I'm going to Docker container. So, I'm going to create that and I think this will be create that and I think this will be create that and I think this will be good for now, at least for demonstration good for now, at least for demonstration good for now, at least for demonstration purposes of this video. You can make as purposes of this video. You can make as purposes of this video. You can make as many as you want. And when we get into many as you want. And when we get into many as you want. And when we get into unraid or Docker, you can kind of see unraid or Docker, you can kind of see unraid or Docker, you can kind of see how I'm doing things. But before we get how I'm doing things. But before we get how I'm doing things. But before we get into the unraid Docker stuff, we are into the unraid Docker stuff, we are into the unraid Docker stuff, we are going to start backing up our Proxmox going to start backing up our Proxmox going to start backing up our Proxmox virtual environment. And to do this virtual environment. And to do this virtual environment. And to do this properly, you're going to need separate properly, you're going to need separate properly, you're going to need separate users and APIs and all that for each users and APIs and all that for each users and APIs and all that for each individual update or each individual individual update or each individual individual update or each individual machine or thing that you're giving machine or thing that you're giving machine or thing that you're giving access to. And this is going to be done access to. And this is going to be done access to. And this is going to be done under access control right here. We have under access control right here. We have under access control right here. We have user management and what I'm going to do user management and what I'm going to do user management and what I'm going to do is I'm going to add a new user. For the is I'm going to add a new user. For the is I'm going to add a new user. For the name, I'm just going to call this PVE name, I'm just going to call this PVE name, I'm just going to call this PVE and realm, that looks good. Give it a and realm, that looks good. Give it a and realm, that looks good. Give it a password. Even though we're not really password. Even though we're not really password. Even though we're not really going to be using this password, we're going to be using this password, we're going to be using this password, we're going to be using the API keys. Keep going to be using the API keys. Keep going to be using the API keys. Keep enabled to check and we're going to go enabled to check and we're going to go enabled to check and we're going to go ahead and click on add. So now from here ahead and click on add. So now from here ahead and click on add. So now from here we're going to create our API token. So we're going to create our API token. So we're going to create our API token. So we can go over to API tokens, we're just we can go over to API tokens, we're just we can go over to API tokens, we're just going to add. Here for the user, we are going to add. Here for the user, we are going to add. Here for the user, we are going to select our new PVE user. You going to select our new PVE user. You going to select our new PVE user. You can see the actual username right there.

  11. can see the actual username right there. can see the actual username right there. And for the token name, we can call it And for the token name, we can call it And for the token name, we can call it whatever. I'm just going to call it whatever. I'm just going to call it whatever. I'm just going to call it backup. Keep everything enabled and backup. Keep everything enabled and backup. Keep everything enabled and let's click on add. Now, this we're let's click on add. Now, this we're let's click on add. Now, this we're going to want to save this. Because we going to want to save this. Because we going to want to save this. Because we are definitely going to be using it are definitely going to be using it are definitely going to be using it later, so I'm just going to put it all later, so I'm just going to put it all later, so I'm just going to put it all in a notepad right here. And then once in a notepad right here. And then once in a notepad right here. And then once that is saved, we can close this out and that is saved, we can close this out and that is saved, we can close this out and we're going to want to add some we're going to want to add some we're going to want to add some permissions to the token because right permissions to the token because right permissions to the token because right now just using a token won't let us do now just using a token won't let us do now just using a token won't let us do anything. We're going to do two anything. We're going to do two anything. We're going to do two permissions. We're going to do user and permissions. We're going to do user and permissions. We're going to do user and token permissions just so you have the token permissions just so you have the token permissions just so you have the option to switch between the two. For option to switch between the two. For option to switch between the two. For the path, we are going to be putting the path, we are going to be putting the path, we are going to be putting this into Let's just type it, that'd be this into Let's just type it, that'd be this into Let's just type it, that'd be easier. Data store and vault. Except easier. Data store and vault. Except easier. Data store and vault. Except we're going to want to specify the we're going to want to specify the we're going to want to specify the namespace here. So that is PVE-MinisForm namespace here. So that is PVE-MinisForm namespace here. So that is PVE-MinisForm And then for the user, we're going to And then for the user, we're going to And then for the user, we're going to select our PVE user. Role, you want to select our PVE user. Role, you want to select our PVE user. Role, you want to give this one data store backup give this one data store backup give this one data store backup permissions. And before I add, I'm just permissions. And before I add, I'm just permissions. And before I add, I'm just going to give this path a copy because going to give this path a copy because going to give this path a copy because we're going to add it and then add a API we're going to add it and then add a API we're going to add it and then add a API permission. Paste in the path. permission. Paste in the path. permission. Paste in the path. And then for the token, we're going to And then for the token, we're going to And then for the token, we're going to select the PVE one and then give this select the PVE one and then give this select the PVE one and then give this our data store backup permission, very our data store backup permission, very our data store backup permission, very similar. Click on add and now we're good similar. Click on add and now we're good similar. Click on add and now we're good to go. So, now we're going to want to to go. So, now we're going to want to to go. So, now we're going to want to get our fingerprint. Just to show you, get our fingerprint. Just to show you, get our fingerprint. Just to show you, there's two ways to do this. You could there's two ways to do this. You could there's two ways to do this. You could either use a command to get the either use a command to get the either use a command to get the fingerprint right here. So, if I give fingerprint right here. So, if I give fingerprint right here. So, if I give that a copy, I'm going to save it in my that a copy, I'm going to save it in my that a copy, I'm going to save it in my little notepad over here. Alternatively, little notepad over here. Alternatively, little notepad over here. Alternatively, if we go up to the dashboard and hit if we go up to the dashboard and hit if we go up to the dashboard and hit show fingerprint, we got it right there show fingerprint, we got it right there show fingerprint, we got it right there for us, pretty easy peasy. So, we can for us, pretty easy peasy. So, we can for us, pretty easy peasy. So, we can close this out and now what we're going close this out and now what we're going close this out and now what we're going to want to do is go over to my actual to want to do is go over to my actual to want to do is go over to my actual Proxmox virtual environment. All right, Proxmox virtual environment. All right, Proxmox virtual environment. All right, so here we are. This is Proxmox VE. If

  12. so here we are. This is Proxmox VE. If so here we are. This is Proxmox VE. If you don't have Proxmox virtual you don't have Proxmox virtual you don't have Proxmox virtual environment, you go ahead and skip this. environment, you go ahead and skip this. environment, you go ahead and skip this. Of course, there are chapters. So, what Of course, there are chapters. So, what Of course, there are chapters. So, what we're going to want to do is go over to we're going to want to do is go over to we're going to want to do is go over to storage. Here, we're going to add a new storage. Here, we're going to add a new storage. Here, we're going to add a new storage. This one is going to be Proxmox storage. This one is going to be Proxmox storage. This one is going to be Proxmox Backup Server. And now here, we got some Backup Server. And now here, we got some Backup Server. And now here, we got some stuff to fill out. So, for the ID, we stuff to fill out. So, for the ID, we stuff to fill out. So, for the ID, we can call this Proxmox Backup can call this Proxmox Backup can call this Proxmox Backup Server-Vault, Server-Vault, Server-Vault, which is our data store. For the server, which is our data store. For the server, which is our data store. For the server, we're just going to go over here and we're just going to go over here and we're just going to go over here and copy this IP address. Drop that on in copy this IP address. Drop that on in copy this IP address. Drop that on in without the HTTP stuff. For the without the HTTP stuff. For the without the HTTP stuff. For the username, you see the example there, username, you see the example there, username, you see the example there, it's for getting the actual uh name it's for getting the actual uh name it's for getting the actual uh name space we created. So, it's going to look space we created. So, it's going to look space we created. So, it's going to look a little bit like this. It's going to be a little bit like this. It's going to be a little bit like this. It's going to be your username @proxmoxbackupserver your username @proxmoxbackupserver your username @proxmoxbackupserver {exclamation point} and then the name of {exclamation point} and then the name of {exclamation point} and then the name of the token, not the name space, my bad. the token, not the name space, my bad. the token, not the name space, my bad. For the actual password, this is where For the actual password, this is where For the actual password, this is where we are going to insert the actual token we are going to insert the actual token we are going to insert the actual token that we saved over here. My data store that we saved over here. My data store that we saved over here. My data store is going to be Vault. And then for the is going to be Vault. And then for the is going to be Vault. And then for the name space, we called this name space, we called this name space, we called this PVE-minisform. PVE-minisform. PVE-minisform. And then last but not least, we need to And then last but not least, we need to And then last but not least, we need to punch in the fingerprint right here, punch in the fingerprint right here, punch in the fingerprint right here, just like so. Click on add and you could just like so. Click on add and you could just like so. Click on add and you could see dropped in without any error, which see dropped in without any error, which see dropped in without any error, which personally is ideal.

  13. personally is ideal. personally is ideal. So now, let's go ahead and make a backup So now, let's go ahead and make a backup So now, let's go ahead and make a backup job so we actually get some data over to job so we actually get some data over to job so we actually get some data over to Proxmox Backup Server. If I go up here, Proxmox Backup Server. If I go up here, Proxmox Backup Server. If I go up here, click add, we have a lot of stuff going click add, we have a lot of stuff going click add, we have a lot of stuff going on. on. on. Um one thing to note before we actually Um one thing to note before we actually Um one thing to note before we actually create backup jobs is I don't think I create backup jobs is I don't think I create backup jobs is I don't think I have have have um um um added storage. Like um if you if you added storage. Like um if you if you added storage. Like um if you if you were one to follow our or my original were one to follow our or my original were one to follow our or my original Proxmox kind of series of setting up as Proxmox kind of series of setting up as Proxmox kind of series of setting up as a home lab on the first LXC container, a home lab on the first LXC container, a home lab on the first LXC container, you probably have a couple mount points you probably have a couple mount points you probably have a couple mount points with a bunch of data in it. This is with a bunch of data in it. This is with a bunch of data in it. This is where you'd go and actually make sure where you'd go and actually make sure where you'd go and actually make sure that those are being backed up. So you that those are being backed up. So you that those are being backed up. So you do that under resources. You would go to do that under resources. You would go to do that under resources. You would go to the mount point here. You would edit it the mount point here. You would edit it the mount point here. You would edit it and there would be an option to enable and there would be an option to enable and there would be an option to enable backups for that specific mount point. backups for that specific mount point. backups for that specific mount point. Root disks are backed up by default. And Root disks are backed up by default. And Root disks are backed up by default. And if I go over here, this is a new Windows if I go over here, this is a new Windows if I go over here, this is a new Windows VM I have. I just want to go and check VM I have. I just want to go and check VM I have. I just want to go and check hardware, hard disk. Yep, we have backup hardware, hard disk. Yep, we have backup hardware, hard disk. Yep, we have backup to check right there. So if there are to check right there. So if there are to check right there. So if there are things that you don't want backed up things that you don't want backed up things that you don't want backed up necessarily, you could either not select necessarily, you could either not select necessarily, you could either not select it in the actual backup task that we're it in the actual backup task that we're it in the actual backup task that we're going to create over here, or you can going to create over here, or you can going to create over here, or you can disable backups for a specific mount disable backups for a specific mount disable backups for a specific mount points. But for this, we are going to points. But for this, we are going to points. But for this, we are going to send storage to a PBS vault. For the send storage to a PBS vault. For the send storage to a PBS vault. For the schedule, pick whatever you prefer.

  14. schedule, pick whatever you prefer. schedule, pick whatever you prefer. Every day about 9:00 sounds good to me. Every day about 9:00 sounds good to me. Every day about 9:00 sounds good to me. Include selected, we'll just select all Include selected, we'll just select all Include selected, we'll just select all of them. Or just in case we make more, of them. Or just in case we make more, of them. Or just in case we make more, let's just do all. And then for mode, we let's just do all. And then for mode, we let's just do all. And then for mode, we have snapshot. There's a couple have snapshot. There's a couple have snapshot. There's a couple different modes that you could pick from different modes that you could pick from different modes that you could pick from here. This one keeps the actual here. This one keeps the actual here. This one keeps the actual container or VM up and running while container or VM up and running while container or VM up and running while it's doing the backup. It's It's a it's doing the backup. It's It's a it's doing the backup. It's It's a little slower, but it's best for little slower, but it's best for little slower, but it's best for downtime. Uh suspend will pause the downtime. Uh suspend will pause the downtime. Uh suspend will pause the containers. It's a little bit more containers. It's a little bit more containers. It's a little bit more consistent, but things can get uh frozen consistent, but things can get uh frozen consistent, but things can get uh frozen for end users or the actual containers. for end users or the actual containers. for end users or the actual containers. And then stop will obviously shut down And then stop will obviously shut down And then stop will obviously shut down the entire thing, back everything up, the entire thing, back everything up, the entire thing, back everything up, and then reboot it. It's the most and then reboot it. It's the most and then reboot it. It's the most consistent, but you have the most consistent, but you have the most consistent, but you have the most downtime. I just go snapshot. And then downtime. I just go snapshot. And then downtime. I just go snapshot. And then again, we're not going to really talk again, we're not going to really talk again, we're not going to really talk about notifications this round. about notifications this round. about notifications this round. Retention's kind of important, too. I'm Retention's kind of important, too. I'm Retention's kind of important, too. I'm going to do keep all backups because going to do keep all backups because going to do keep all backups because we're going to manage this on the we're going to manage this on the we're going to manage this on the Proxmox backup server side. Um and from Proxmox backup server side. Um and from Proxmox backup server side. Um and from there, I think we're good. So, we could there, I think we're good. So, we could there, I think we're good. So, we could go ahead and create this job. So, now we go ahead and create this job. So, now we go ahead and create this job. So, now we could actually verify this. If we go could actually verify this. If we go could actually verify this. If we go over here to vault under summary, you over here to vault under summary, you over here to vault under summary, you can see there's no disk space being used can see there's no disk space being used can see there's no disk space being used and under our PVE minis form, if I open and under our PVE minis form, if I open and under our PVE minis form, if I open that up, we got nothing going on. So, we that up, we got nothing going on. So, we that up, we got nothing going on. So, we could test this by first running the could test this by first running the could test this by first running the backup job manually. So, if we click on backup job manually. So, if we click on backup job manually. So, if we click on run now, yes, you could see it's running run now, yes, you could see it's running run now, yes, you could see it's running right there. We have a little save. It's right there. We have a little save. It's right there. We have a little save. It's moved on to the next one. These are moved on to the next one. These are moved on to the next one. These are pretty lightweight containers except for pretty lightweight containers except for pretty lightweight containers except for these two virtual machines, so it's these two virtual machines, so it's these two virtual machines, so it's probably going to be pretty quick. But probably going to be pretty quick. But probably going to be pretty quick. But if we go over here under summary, if we go over here under summary, if we go over here under summary, you can see, oh, look at that. We got a you can see, oh, look at that. We got a you can see, oh, look at that. We got a little bit of data getting funneled in little bit of data getting funneled in little bit of data getting funneled in here. And then if we go over under here. And then if we go over under here. And then if we go over under content and then open this up again, you content and then open this up again, you content and then open this up again, you can see we got the two containers right

  15. can see we got the two containers right can see we got the two containers right here that were at least the progress here that were at least the progress here that were at least the progress that's currently in. So, what I'm going that's currently in. So, what I'm going that's currently in. So, what I'm going to do is go ahead and let this finish to do is go ahead and let this finish to do is go ahead and let this finish up. If you ever want to see more details up. If you ever want to see more details up. If you ever want to see more details on backup jobs, if I go ahead and open on backup jobs, if I go ahead and open on backup jobs, if I go ahead and open this up for example, you can see exactly this up for example, you can see exactly this up for example, you can see exactly what it's doing and you can kind of what it's doing and you can kind of what it's doing and you can kind of monitor it here. But we're just going to monitor it here. But we're just going to monitor it here. But we're just going to give that a second and wait for it to give that a second and wait for it to give that a second and wait for it to finish on up. And it looks like we are finish on up. And it looks like we are finish on up. And it looks like we are just about done. So, if we come over just about done. So, if we come over just about done. So, if we come over here, you can see 37 gigs. Not too bad here, you can see 37 gigs. Not too bad here, you can see 37 gigs. Not too bad for our first little backup. Now, just for our first little backup. Now, just for our first little backup. Now, just to demonstrate that this actually kind to demonstrate that this actually kind to demonstrate that this actually kind of works here, let's nuke something. of works here, let's nuke something. of works here, let's nuke something. Let's go ahead and nuke my AdGuard Let's go ahead and nuke my AdGuard Let's go ahead and nuke my AdGuard instance. So, if I go over here under instance. So, if I go over here under instance. So, if I go over here under the data store, you can see under the data store, you can see under the data store, you can see under content that we are all backed up and content that we are all backed up and content that we are all backed up and good to go. good to go. good to go. You got AdGuard right here. So, again, You got AdGuard right here. So, again, You got AdGuard right here. So, again, let's destroy it. let's destroy it. let's destroy it. So, if I go over here, let's shut her So, if I go over here, let's shut her So, if I go over here, let's shut her down. Just do a hard stop. And now that down. Just do a hard stop. And now that down. Just do a hard stop. And now that it's off, we could go more, remove, it's off, we could go more, remove, it's off, we could go more, remove, and we will and we will and we will confirm this. So, bam, remove. And then confirm this. So, bam, remove. And then confirm this. So, bam, remove. And then just like that, it is gone. If we didn't just like that, it is gone. If we didn't just like that, it is gone. If we didn't have a backup, we're cooked. So, now have a backup, we're cooked. So, now have a backup, we're cooked. So, now what we're going to do is go over here what we're going to do is go over here what we're going to do is go over here to the PBS vault. And then, under to the PBS vault. And then, under to the PBS vault. And then, under backups, you can see Look at that, we backups, you can see Look at that, we backups, you can see Look at that, we got some backups. So, I'm going to go got some backups. So, I'm going to go got some backups. So, I'm going to go over here to AdGuard. And there's a few over here to AdGuard. And there's a few over here to AdGuard. And there's a few options. You can do restore, file options. You can do restore, file options. You can do restore, file restore. So, if you do file restore, you restore. So, if you do file restore, you restore. So, if you do file restore, you can actually go and browse files and see can actually go and browse files and see can actually go and browse files and see what's going on and download things, what's going on and download things, what's going on and download things, which is real nice if you like just need which is real nice if you like just need which is real nice if you like just need to like download some things real quick to like download some things real quick to like download some things real quick directly from an image without having to directly from an image without having to directly from an image without having to go to it. That's a real nice use case.

  16. go to it. That's a real nice use case. go to it. That's a real nice use case. But, what I'm going to do is a full But, what I'm going to do is a full But, what I'm going to do is a full restore. So, I'm going to click restore. restore. So, I'm going to click restore. restore. So, I'm going to click restore. I'm going to give it its original I'm going to give it its original I'm going to give it its original container ID. We have options, but we container ID. We have options, but we container ID. We have options, but we can go ahead and keep everything as is. can go ahead and keep everything as is. can go ahead and keep everything as is. Click restore. And then, there we go. Click restore. And then, there we go. Click restore. And then, there we go. It's going to start the process. We can It's going to start the process. We can It's going to start the process. We can see it kind of pop up right here. And see it kind of pop up right here. And see it kind of pop up right here. And task okay. So, we are all good. If I task okay. So, we are all good. If I task okay. So, we are all good. If I close this out, you can see it is now close this out, you can see it is now close this out, you can see it is now restored. Start the container. And then, restored. Start the container. And then, restored. Start the container. And then, life is good. All right. So, now we are life is good. All right. So, now we are life is good. All right. So, now we are going to pivot just a little bit and going to pivot just a little bit and going to pivot just a little bit and create a backup with Docker. Now, this create a backup with Docker. Now, this create a backup with Docker. Now, this is going to be using this right here. is going to be using this right here. is going to be using this right here. This is PBS client Docker. If I scroll This is PBS client Docker. If I scroll This is PBS client Docker. If I scroll down here, this is going to do is run down here, this is going to do is run down here, this is going to do is run the Proxmox Backup Server client the Proxmox Backup Server client the Proxmox Backup Server client directly in a Docker container. Makes it directly in a Docker container. Makes it directly in a Docker container. Makes it really easy to set up and use. This really easy to set up and use. This really easy to set up and use. This right here is the kind of actual right here is the kind of actual right here is the kind of actual documentation [clears throat] documentation [clears throat] documentation [clears throat] for the backup client. I'm not going to for the backup client. I'm not going to for the backup client. I'm not going to mess with it directly in this video. If mess with it directly in this video. If mess with it directly in this video. If you're interested in learning more about you're interested in learning more about you're interested in learning more about this client, I this client, I this client, I can make a follow-up video on that. But, can make a follow-up video on that. But, can make a follow-up video on that. But, we're going to interact with it with the we're going to interact with it with the we're going to interact with it with the Docker image cuz we're going to be doing Docker image cuz we're going to be doing Docker image cuz we're going to be doing this on Unraid. Now, for this, we're this on Unraid. Now, for this, we're this on Unraid. Now, for this, we're going to do a similar thing where we going to do a similar thing where we going to do a similar thing where we have to set up some stuff under access have to set up some stuff under access have to set up some stuff under access control here. But, the slight difference control here. But, the slight difference control here. But, the slight difference that I'm going to do is I'm going to be that I'm going to do is I'm going to be that I'm going to do is I'm going to be running in the future I'm going to be running in the future I'm going to be running in the future I'm going to be running multiple containers for actually running multiple containers for actually running multiple containers for actually backing up into their own independent backing up into their own independent backing up into their own independent name spaces. Again, in this example, name spaces. Again, in this example, name spaces. Again, in this example, we're going to be focusing on image. So, we're going to be focusing on image. So, we're going to be focusing on image. So, essentially, we're going to create one essentially, we're going to create one essentially, we're going to create one user and I'm going to make a API token.

  17. user and I'm going to make a API token. user and I'm going to make a API token. But, in the future, I'll make other API But, in the future, I'll make other API But, in the future, I'll make other API tokens associated with this user that tokens associated with this user that tokens associated with this user that I'm making now. So, let's go ahead and I'm making now. So, let's go ahead and I'm making now. So, let's go ahead and add a user. This is going to be my add a user. This is going to be my add a user. This is going to be my Unraid user. We can go ahead and give it Unraid user. We can go ahead and give it Unraid user. We can go ahead and give it a password, keep the realm as is, and we a password, keep the realm as is, and we a password, keep the realm as is, and we can add that. And we're going to add one can add that. And we're going to add one can add that. And we're going to add one right here, and I am going to call this right here, and I am going to call this right here, and I am going to call this unraid image. And then for the user, I'm unraid image. And then for the user, I'm unraid image. And then for the user, I'm going to put this under unraid just like going to put this under unraid just like going to put this under unraid just like so. And then we could go ahead and add so. And then we could go ahead and add so. And then we could go ahead and add that token. Now again, we're going to that token. Now again, we're going to that token. Now again, we're going to want to copy this. So there we go, I want to copy this. So there we go, I want to copy this. So there we go, I have that copied over. So close that have that copied over. So close that have that copied over. So close that out, and then kind of the same thing, out, and then kind of the same thing, out, and then kind of the same thing, we're going to go into permissions. And we're going to go into permissions. And we're going to go into permissions. And actually, I almost forgot, we need to go actually, I almost forgot, we need to go actually, I almost forgot, we need to go over to our vault, I do apologize. And over to our vault, I do apologize. And over to our vault, I do apologize. And just to make sure remind myself of the just to make sure remind myself of the just to make sure remind myself of the name, if you go under content here, name, if you go under content here, name, if you go under content here, there it is, unraid image. So what we there it is, unraid image. So what we there it is, unraid image. So what we can do, go under access control, can do, go under access control, can do, go under access control, permissions, we are going to add a user permissions, we are going to add a user permissions, we are going to add a user permission in data store vault permission in data store vault permission in data store vault unraid-image. unraid-image. unraid-image. Just like before, I'm going to copy Just like before, I'm going to copy Just like before, I'm going to copy that, going to put this in the unraid that, going to put this in the unraid that, going to put this in the unraid group with a group with a group with a data store backup, add that, and then do data store backup, add that, and then do data store backup, add that, and then do the exact same thing with a API token the exact same thing with a API token the exact same thing with a API token this time. So this goes to that one.

  18. this time. So this goes to that one. this time. So this goes to that one. This is going to have data store backup, This is going to have data store backup, This is going to have data store backup, and we're good to go. So now, on your and we're good to go. So now, on your and we're good to go. So now, on your docker machine, what we're going to want docker machine, what we're going to want docker machine, what we're going to want to do, this is again is my unraid to do, this is again is my unraid to do, this is again is my unraid machine, went over to apps, if I just do machine, went over to apps, if I just do machine, went over to apps, if I just do um Proxmox, we have the Proxmox backup um Proxmox, we have the Proxmox backup um Proxmox, we have the Proxmox backup client right here, so I'm going to grab client right here, so I'm going to grab client right here, so I'm going to grab that. I'm going to click install. Again, that. I'm going to click install. Again, that. I'm going to click install. Again, just drop in the compose and do it that just drop in the compose and do it that just drop in the compose and do it that way. I'll link below or I'll link on way. I'll link below or I'll link on way. I'll link below or I'll link on screen to a full kind of docker guide if screen to a full kind of docker guide if screen to a full kind of docker guide if you want to go and learn how to use all you want to go and learn how to use all you want to go and learn how to use all that. So now we can begin customizing that. So now we can begin customizing that. So now we can begin customizing this. So dash client, just make that a this. So dash client, just make that a this. So dash client, just make that a little bit prettier. All this looks little bit prettier. All this looks little bit prettier. All this looks good. We're going to leave this good. We're going to leave this good. We're going to leave this encryption password blank for now, we're encryption password blank for now, we're encryption password blank for now, we're going to get that from the logs in our going to get that from the logs in our going to get that from the logs in our first boot. But here we have the first boot. But here we have the first boot. But here we have the endpoint. So to grab that, the endpoint endpoint. So to grab that, the endpoint endpoint. So to grab that, the endpoint is going to be our IP address and port, is going to be our IP address and port, is going to be our IP address and port, so let's grab that and then drop it in so let's grab that and then drop it in so let's grab that and then drop it in over here. And then our data store is over here. And then our data store is over here. And then our data store is going to be vault. I'm going to change going to be vault. I'm going to change going to be vault. I'm going to change this cron schedule to run every day at this cron schedule to run every day at this cron schedule to run every day at 3:00 a.m. If you're interested in how to 3:00 a.m. If you're interested in how to 3:00 a.m. If you're interested in how to set up cron jobs and things, I'll also set up cron jobs and things, I'll also set up cron jobs and things, I'll also provide information down below. And our provide information down below. And our provide information down below. And our API key name is going to be the unraid API key name is going to be the unraid API key name is going to be the unraid image API. And then we grab our API image API. And then we grab our API image API. And then we grab our API secret and drop that in. And since we're secret and drop that in. And since we're secret and drop that in. And since we're using API, we can leave the user and using API, we can leave the user and using API, we can leave the user and password blank, but we are going to need password blank, but we are going to need password blank, but we are going to need to drop in our fingerprint. And again, to drop in our fingerprint. And again, to drop in our fingerprint. And again, all this is just Docker Compose all this is just Docker Compose all this is just Docker Compose environmental variables. For the data environmental variables. For the data environmental variables. For the data store name space here, it is going to be store name space here, it is going to be store name space here, it is going to be unraid image. So, drop that in.

  19. unraid image. So, drop that in. unraid image. So, drop that in. And right here we have our backup paths. And right here we have our backup paths. And right here we have our backup paths. So, you can select the multiple backup So, you can select the multiple backup So, you can select the multiple backup paths, but that's going to put paths, but that's going to put paths, but that's going to put everything in one snapshot. That's kind everything in one snapshot. That's kind everything in one snapshot. That's kind of why I'm separating all this out, so I of why I'm separating all this out, so I of why I'm separating all this out, so I can actually go ahead and remove two of can actually go ahead and remove two of can actually go ahead and remove two of these because for this I am only going these because for this I am only going these because for this I am only going to select my image share. So, if I come to select my image share. So, if I come to select my image share. So, if I come in here, we're going to go to images and in here, we're going to go to images and in here, we're going to go to images and you can see all that. Looks good. So, you can see all that. Looks good. So, you can see all that. Looks good. So, from there we can go ahead and save. And from there we can go ahead and save. And from there we can go ahead and save. And now what I'm going to do is I'm just now what I'm going to do is I'm just now what I'm going to do is I'm just going to do apply and spin this up. So, going to do apply and spin this up. So, going to do apply and spin this up. So, that way we actually can get that little that way we actually can get that little that way we actually can get that little encryption key. So, if I hit apply, I'm encryption key. So, if I hit apply, I'm encryption key. So, if I hit apply, I'm going to let this do it needs to do. And going to let this do it needs to do. And going to let this do it needs to do. And there we go. So, now let's view the there we go. So, now let's view the there we go. So, now let's view the container log and we'll try it again. container log and we'll try it again. container log and we'll try it again. So, there we go. Imports this new client So, there we go. Imports this new client So, there we go. Imports this new client encryption password. Let's go ahead and encryption password. Let's go ahead and encryption password. Let's go ahead and grab this. Give that a copy. And then grab this. Give that a copy. And then grab this. Give that a copy. And then what we'll do is go done. We're going to what we'll do is go done. We're going to what we'll do is go done. We're going to jump back into the configuration for jump back into the configuration for jump back into the configuration for that Docker container. So, let's open that Docker container. So, let's open that Docker container. So, let's open this up right here and then go to right this up right here and then go to right this up right here and then go to right here, drop her on in, and we will apply here, drop her on in, and we will apply here, drop her on in, and we will apply those changes. So, there we go. We could those changes. So, there we go. We could those changes. So, there we go. We could go done. And now one thing that you'll go done. And now one thing that you'll go done. And now one thing that you'll notice or one thing that you're probably notice or one thing that you're probably notice or one thing that you're probably thinking is how do I run this without thinking is how do I run this without thinking is how do I run this without actually um actually um actually um it being 3:00 a.m. in the morning. I'm it being 3:00 a.m. in the morning. I'm it being 3:00 a.m. in the morning. I'm going to go in here for a third time. I going to go in here for a third time. I going to go in here for a third time. I do apologize. And actually so I can do apologize. And actually so I can do apologize. And actually so I can separate these out, I'm going to call separate these out, I'm going to call separate these out, I'm going to call this one this one this one uh client image. Just kind of keep uh client image. Just kind of keep uh client image. Just kind of keep everything else as is. But what we're everything else as is. But what we're everything else as is. But what we're going to want to do is go here. Let's going to want to do is go here. Let's going to want to do is go here. Let's add another port path variable so forth.

  20. add another port path variable so forth. add another port path variable so forth. And if you actually go over here to And if you actually go over here to And if you actually go over here to their Docker page, you can see all of their Docker page, you can see all of their Docker page, you can see all of the different variables that you can the different variables that you can the different variables that you can use. I am going to add the variable of use. I am going to add the variable of use. I am going to add the variable of cron backup only with a value of zero, cron backup only with a value of zero, cron backup only with a value of zero, basically making it so it will back up basically making it so it will back up basically making it so it will back up on when the container starts up and on when the container starts up and on when the container starts up and during the cron job. So, we are going to during the cron job. So, we are going to during the cron job. So, we are going to add that. I will apply my changes, and add that. I will apply my changes, and add that. I will apply my changes, and now if we go done and let's jump on into now if we go done and let's jump on into now if we go done and let's jump on into the logs, you can see the upload the logs, you can see the upload the logs, you can see the upload directory is right here. It's executing directory is right here. It's executing directory is right here. It's executing the command, and we should start seeing the command, and we should start seeing the command, and we should start seeing some uh data transfer. So, if we some uh data transfer. So, if we some uh data transfer. So, if we actually close this out and then head on actually close this out and then head on actually close this out and then head on over to Proxmox Backup Server, go to our over to Proxmox Backup Server, go to our over to Proxmox Backup Server, go to our vault here, vault here, vault here, and then go under unread image. If I and then go under unread image. If I and then go under unread image. If I open this up, you can see we have host open this up, you can see we have host open this up, you can see we have host hopkimedia. If I drop this down, you can hopkimedia. If I drop this down, you can hopkimedia. If I drop this down, you can see we have the actual backup right see we have the actual backup right see we have the actual backup right here. And if I go over here to data here. And if I go over here to data here. And if I go over here to data store, we're going to see this number store, we're going to see this number store, we're going to see this number slowly start increasing. In the logs slowly start increasing. In the logs slowly start increasing. In the logs here, we do have some status, processed here, we do have some status, processed here, we do have some status, processed this much data, uploaded this much data.

  21. this much data, uploaded this much data. this much data, uploaded this much data. So, it's rocking and it's rolling and So, it's rocking and it's rolling and So, it's rocking and it's rolling and it's moving. So, I have about 600 gigs it's moving. So, I have about 600 gigs it's moving. So, I have about 600 gigs of stuff in there, so we are going to of stuff in there, so we are going to of stuff in there, so we are going to let that finish backing up and then let that finish backing up and then let that finish backing up and then proceed to the next step of some offsite proceed to the next step of some offsite proceed to the next step of some offsite offsite S3 compatible storage. All offsite S3 compatible storage. All offsite S3 compatible storage. All right, so I've been backing up image for right, so I've been backing up image for right, so I've been backing up image for some time. It is just about completing, some time. It is just about completing, some time. It is just about completing, but what I'm going to do is show you but what I'm going to do is show you but what I'm going to do is show you just as kind of a proof of concept. I just as kind of a proof of concept. I just as kind of a proof of concept. I created another container here created another container here created another container here specifically for the app data, so all my specifically for the app data, so all my specifically for the app data, so all my Docker kind of config files and stuff, Docker kind of config files and stuff, Docker kind of config files and stuff, just to make sure it worked, and it did. just to make sure it worked, and it did. just to make sure it worked, and it did. Uh over here you can see I created a new Uh over here you can see I created a new Uh over here you can see I created a new API token just for it under the same API token just for it under the same API token just for it under the same unread user, added the permissions, and unread user, added the permissions, and unread user, added the permissions, and went through the same setup process. went through the same setup process. went through the same setup process. But, I will note you want to really make But, I will note you want to really make But, I will note you want to really make sure not to point it to the same kind of sure not to point it to the same kind of sure not to point it to the same kind of configuration area. So, on this first configuration area. So, on this first configuration area. So, on this first one, the image one, it's kind of the one, the image one, it's kind of the one, the image one, it's kind of the default directory, which I might go default directory, which I might go default directory, which I might go ahead and edit this later, but you can ahead and edit this later, but you can ahead and edit this later, but you can see it's under app data Proxmox Backup see it's under app data Proxmox Backup see it's under app data Proxmox Backup Client, while my new app data one is Client, while my new app data one is Client, while my new app data one is under PBS client app data. So, make sure under PBS client app data. So, make sure under PBS client app data. So, make sure the config directories aren't the same the config directories aren't the same the config directories aren't the same because the config directories actually because the config directories actually because the config directories actually store some important files that you're store some important files that you're store some important files that you're going to want to back up. So, if I go going to want to back up. So, if I go going to want to back up. So, if I go over here, I open up the terminal, what over here, I open up the terminal, what over here, I open up the terminal, what you can do is CD into your mount or you can do is CD into your mount or you can do is CD into your mount or course if you're not on Unraid, the course if you're not on Unraid, the course if you're not on Unraid, the actual location of this.

  22. actual location of this. actual location of this. But, I'm going to go into app data and But, I'm going to go into app data and But, I'm going to go into app data and you could see I have a few different you could see I have a few different you could see I have a few different things here. But, for the first one things here. But, for the first one things here. But, for the first one which is the image, it's going to be in which is the image, it's going to be in which is the image, it's going to be in Proxmox backup client. If I LS, you Proxmox backup client. If I LS, you Proxmox backup client. If I LS, you could see we got some stuff going on could see we got some stuff going on could see we got some stuff going on there. These three files, what you're there. These three files, what you're there. These three files, what you're going to want to do is just cat them going to want to do is just cat them going to want to do is just cat them like this. Cat like this. Cat like this. Cat encryption encryption encryption cat cat cat master, private, and then also cat the master, private, and then also cat the master, private, and then also cat the master public. master public. master public. Just like that. Additionally, if you Just like that. Additionally, if you Just like that. Additionally, if you want to, you can save the one-time want to, you can save the one-time want to, you can save the one-time little password that we have. So, if I little password that we have. So, if I little password that we have. So, if I So, if I just paste in this docker So, if I just paste in this docker So, if I just paste in this docker execute, this is going to print that execute, this is going to print that execute, this is going to print that environmental variable. This one is not environmental variable. This one is not environmental variable. This one is not my client app data. This is going to be my client app data. This is going to be my client app data. This is going to be client image. There we go. So, this is client image. There we go. So, this is client image. There we go. So, this is all the stuff that you're going to want all the stuff that you're going to want all the stuff that you're going to want to save because when the data is to save because when the data is to save because when the data is actually moved over to Proxmox backup actually moved over to Proxmox backup actually moved over to Proxmox backup server, it's all encrypted by default server, it's all encrypted by default server, it's all encrypted by default and you're going to want to save these and you're going to want to save these and you're going to want to save these somewhere secure, whether it be in a somewhere secure, whether it be in a somewhere secure, whether it be in a password manager or if you literally password manager or if you literally password manager or if you literally print it out, have it on the piece of print it out, have it on the piece of print it out, have it on the piece of paper, however you want to go about it. paper, however you want to go about it. paper, however you want to go about it. But, I literally will just copy all of But, I literally will just copy all of But, I literally will just copy all of this and then save it somewhere secure.

  23. this and then save it somewhere secure. this and then save it somewhere secure. Because if it ever gets wiped from Because if it ever gets wiped from Because if it ever gets wiped from Unraid and the data is still on your Unraid and the data is still on your Unraid and the data is still on your backup server, you're cooked. And of backup server, you're cooked. And of backup server, you're cooked. And of course, do that for any other containers course, do that for any other containers course, do that for any other containers that you make that backup things using that you make that backup things using that you make that backup things using this method. So now with our backups, this method. So now with our backups, this method. So now with our backups, we're going to want to set up some jobs. we're going to want to set up some jobs. we're going to want to set up some jobs. And that is to not just store these And that is to not just store these And that is to not just store these backups forever. You don't need them backups forever. You don't need them backups forever. You don't need them stored forever. So, what I'm going to do stored forever. So, what I'm going to do stored forever. So, what I'm going to do is head over to my vault. And then under is head over to my vault. And then under is head over to my vault. And then under vault, go to prune and GC jobs. And what vault, go to prune and GC jobs. And what vault, go to prune and GC jobs. And what we're going to want to do is add a new we're going to want to do is add a new we're going to want to do is add a new prune job. So, if I click add, data prune job. So, if I click add, data prune job. So, if I click add, data store is a vault, namespace, you're store is a vault, namespace, you're store is a vault, namespace, you're going to want to select the one that you going to want to select the one that you going to want to select the one that you want to create a job for. In this case, want to create a job for. In this case, want to create a job for. In this case, let's say I want my image one. And then let's say I want my image one. And then let's say I want my image one. And then from there, we could keep the last three from there, we could keep the last three from there, we could keep the last three no matter what. We'll go ahead and keep no matter what. We'll go ahead and keep no matter what. We'll go ahead and keep maybe a week's worth daily, maybe half a maybe a week's worth daily, maybe half a maybe a week's worth daily, maybe half a year, so six months of them. And weekly, year, so six months of them. And weekly, year, so six months of them. And weekly, maybe a month of weekly snapshots. And maybe a month of weekly snapshots. And maybe a month of weekly snapshots. And maybe one a year. And it's important to maybe one a year. And it's important to maybe one a year. And it's important to know how these actually work. So, it's know how these actually work. So, it's know how these actually work. So, it's not like every time it backs up, it's not like every time it backs up, it's not like every time it backs up, it's going to re-upload the entire or all the going to re-upload the entire or all the going to re-upload the entire or all the data again as a completely separate data again as a completely separate data again as a completely separate copy. It loads it in chunks and changes.

  24. copy. It loads it in chunks and changes. copy. It loads it in chunks and changes. So, for example, if you are doing image So, for example, if you are doing image So, for example, if you are doing image and let's say you upload five photos in and let's say you upload five photos in and let's say you upload five photos in a single day, next time it backs up, a single day, next time it backs up, a single day, next time it backs up, it's only going to move those five it's only going to move those five it's only going to move those five photos worth of data within the next photos worth of data within the next photos worth of data within the next snapshot. So, it's really efficient when snapshot. So, it's really efficient when snapshot. So, it's really efficient when it comes to actual data consumption, but it comes to actual data consumption, but it comes to actual data consumption, but it also works the other way. So, let's it also works the other way. So, let's it also works the other way. So, let's say you have a terabyte of data on say you have a terabyte of data on say you have a terabyte of data on Nextcloud, you end up deleting 500 gigs Nextcloud, you end up deleting 500 gigs Nextcloud, you end up deleting 500 gigs worth, so half of it, that terabyte of worth, so half of it, that terabyte of worth, so half of it, that terabyte of data or that 500 gigs of deleted data is data or that 500 gigs of deleted data is data or that 500 gigs of deleted data is still going to live in these snapshots still going to live in these snapshots still going to live in these snapshots until they eventually get deleted with until they eventually get deleted with until they eventually get deleted with these prune jobs over time. I almost these prune jobs over time. I almost these prune jobs over time. I almost forgot to change prune schedule. We're forgot to change prune schedule. We're forgot to change prune schedule. We're just going to keep this maybe every day just going to keep this maybe every day just going to keep this maybe every day at 11:00 and we'll add. And what that at 11:00 and we'll add. And what that at 11:00 and we'll add. And what that basically does it'll mark the snapshots basically does it'll mark the snapshots basically does it'll mark the snapshots for deletion, but to actually delete for deletion, but to actually delete for deletion, but to actually delete things, we're going to need a garbage things, we're going to need a garbage things, we're going to need a garbage collect job. And to do this, we're just collect job. And to do this, we're just collect job. And to do this, we're just going to click edit right here under going to click edit right here under going to click edit right here under garbage collect and then pick a good garbage collect and then pick a good garbage collect and then pick a good time where you want it to actually time where you want it to actually time where you want it to actually delete the snapshots that have been delete the snapshots that have been delete the snapshots that have been scheduled for deletion by the prune job scheduled for deletion by the prune job scheduled for deletion by the prune job task. So, for this one, maybe every day task. So, for this one, maybe every day task. So, for this one, maybe every day at midnight. So, a couple hours later, at midnight. So, a couple hours later, at midnight. So, a couple hours later, it's going to run that. And there we go. it's going to run that. And there we go. it's going to run that. And there we go. You could see the next run is going to You could see the next run is going to You could see the next run is going to be tomorrow or tonight at midnight. So, be tomorrow or tonight at midnight. So, be tomorrow or tonight at midnight. So, now we get to the one in our 3-2-1 kind now we get to the one in our 3-2-1 kind now we get to the one in our 3-2-1 kind of initial backup methodology and that of initial backup methodology and that of initial backup methodology and that is having data off-site. And like I is having data off-site. And like I is having data off-site. And like I said, we're going to be doing that with said, we're going to be doing that with said, we're going to be doing that with S3 compatible storage or specifically in S3 compatible storage or specifically in S3 compatible storage or specifically in this video, Mega S4. The reason I'm this video, Mega S4. The reason I'm this video, Mega S4. The reason I'm going with Mega, other than the obvious going with Mega, other than the obvious going with Mega, other than the obvious sponsorship, the reason I accepted the sponsorship, the reason I accepted the sponsorship, the reason I accepted the sponsorship is cuz it's easy to set up, sponsorship is cuz it's easy to set up, sponsorship is cuz it's easy to set up, it's a more affordable than something it's a more affordable than something it's a more affordable than something like AWS, and it does have the kind of like AWS, and it does have the kind of like AWS, and it does have the kind of privacy spin or narrative for their privacy spin or narrative for their privacy spin or narrative for their actual products. Most of these steps in actual products. Most of these steps in actual products. Most of these steps in the methodology will work with any S3

  25. the methodology will work with any S3 the methodology will work with any S3 endpoint that you want to go ahead and endpoint that you want to go ahead and endpoint that you want to go ahead and add to this, so do note that. But, there add to this, so do note that. But, there add to this, so do note that. But, there is a couple things that you're going to is a couple things that you're going to is a couple things that you're going to want to note and remember. This want to note and remember. This want to note and remember. This obviously is going to be much slower obviously is going to be much slower obviously is going to be much slower than local backups. And the second thing than local backups. And the second thing than local backups. And the second thing is really watch your provider's pricing is really watch your provider's pricing is really watch your provider's pricing model. All providers kind of do things a model. All providers kind of do things a model. All providers kind of do things a little bit differently. And how this little bit differently. And how this little bit differently. And how this generally will work when uploading files generally will work when uploading files generally will work when uploading files to S3 storage is it will be in small to S3 storage is it will be in small to S3 storage is it will be in small chunks of about like 4 MB. Now, if your chunks of about like 4 MB. Now, if your chunks of about like 4 MB. Now, if your provider does per or cost pricing, provider does per or cost pricing, provider does per or cost pricing, little megabyte chunks for terabytes of little megabyte chunks for terabytes of little megabyte chunks for terabytes of data is going to be huge. So, do be data is going to be huge. So, do be data is going to be huge. So, do be careful and kind of watch out for that. careful and kind of watch out for that. careful and kind of watch out for that. So, before we add our endpoints here, So, before we add our endpoints here, So, before we add our endpoints here, we're going to need to actually make a we're going to need to actually make a we're going to need to actually make a bucket. So, go to Mega or whomever your bucket. So, go to Mega or whomever your bucket. So, go to Mega or whomever your provider is. This right here is Mega. provider is. This right here is Mega. provider is. This right here is Mega. It's real simple to use. So, I'm just It's real simple to use. So, I'm just It's real simple to use. So, I'm just going to create a bucket. Our bucket's going to create a bucket. Our bucket's going to create a bucket. Our bucket's name, I'm going to call it Proxmox name, I'm going to call it Proxmox name, I'm going to call it Proxmox Backup Server offsite, just like that. Backup Server offsite, just like that. Backup Server offsite, just like that. Create, and there we go. So, now I'm Create, and there we go. So, now I'm Create, and there we go. So, now I'm going to need to create an access key so going to need to create an access key so going to need to create an access key so we can go over here to keys, create a we can go over here to keys, create a we can go over here to keys, create a key, and this key we can call it key, and this key we can call it key, and this key we can call it something like uh Proxmox Backup Server.

  26. something like uh Proxmox Backup Server. something like uh Proxmox Backup Server. This is going to be the key for the This is going to be the key for the This is going to be the key for the vault. We'll keep root user. We'll go vault. We'll keep root user. We'll go vault. We'll keep root user. We'll go next. And here it is. We're going to next. And here it is. We're going to next. And here it is. We're going to want to put this somewhere safe. So, want to put this somewhere safe. So, want to put this somewhere safe. So, drop our access key, and then I will drop our access key, and then I will drop our access key, and then I will also put our secret key. And there's a also put our secret key. And there's a also put our secret key. And there's a download option. You might as well download option. You might as well download option. You might as well download it. There it is. Go ahead and download it. There it is. Go ahead and download it. There it is. Go ahead and put that somewhere safe as well. So, now put that somewhere safe as well. So, now put that somewhere safe as well. So, now for the endpoint, we're going to go back for the endpoint, we're going to go back for the endpoint, we're going to go back over here. We're going to add our over here. We're going to add our over here. We're going to add our endpoint, and we got a bunch of stuff endpoint, and we got a bunch of stuff endpoint, and we got a bunch of stuff here to fill in. This is going to be here to fill in. This is going to be here to fill in. This is going to be Mega S4. We have our access and secret Mega S4. We have our access and secret Mega S4. We have our access and secret keys, so we might as well drop those in keys, so we might as well drop those in keys, so we might as well drop those in since I already have them right here, since I already have them right here, since I already have them right here, easy to access. And now the endpoint. easy to access. And now the endpoint. easy to access. And now the endpoint. The endpoint's kind of important. All The endpoint's kind of important. All The endpoint's kind of important. All providers are going to be a little bit providers are going to be a little bit providers are going to be a little bit different, so the format and whatnot of different, so the format and whatnot of different, so the format and whatnot of the endpoints may change. You may need the endpoints may change. You may need the endpoints may change. You may need to put in the region. For Mega, we just to put in the region. For Mega, we just to put in the region. For Mega, we just keep region and port at default. But, if keep region and port at default. But, if keep region and port at default. But, if we go over here, go to our offsite. Now, we go over here, go to our offsite. Now, we go over here, go to our offsite. Now, this right here, this isn't what we're this right here, this isn't what we're this right here, this isn't what we're looking for. What you're going to want looking for. What you're going to want looking for. What you're going to want to do is go to the main object storage to do is go to the main object storage to do is go to the main object storage and go to the object storage settings and go to the object storage settings and go to the object storage settings and then you will have your available S3 and then you will have your available S3 and then you will have your available S3 compatible endpoints right here. So, for compatible endpoints right here. So, for compatible endpoints right here. So, for me, I'm going to go with this Vancouver me, I'm going to go with this Vancouver me, I'm going to go with this Vancouver one. That's the closest to my location one. That's the closest to my location one. That's the closest to my location and then just drop it on in. Do make and then just drop it on in. Do make and then just drop it on in. Do make sure you check path style or you'll have sure you check path style or you'll have sure you check path style or you'll have some errors when you try to back it up.

  27. some errors when you try to back it up. some errors when you try to back it up. We leave fingerprint blank and then We leave fingerprint blank and then We leave fingerprint blank and then click on add. So, then just like that, click on add. So, then just like that, click on add. So, then just like that, we are good to go in that regard. Now, we are good to go in that regard. Now, we are good to go in that regard. Now, there's a couple commands that you can there's a couple commands that you can there's a couple commands that you can do to check to make sure that this works do to check to make sure that this works do to check to make sure that this works before we get too deep into everything before we get too deep into everything before we get too deep into everything else. One is going to be this. It's just else. One is going to be this. It's just else. One is going to be this. It's just a simple check. If we have no output, a simple check. If we have no output, a simple check. If we have no output, that means that there's no error, which that means that there's no error, which that means that there's no error, which is ideal. And then this command, so we is ideal. And then this command, so we is ideal. And then this command, so we had no output, that's good. We're going had no output, that's good. We're going had no output, that's good. We're going to list our available buckets, which it to list our available buckets, which it to list our available buckets, which it should list our Proxmox offsite. So, should list our Proxmox offsite. So, should list our Proxmox offsite. So, we're looking good. Now, before we we're looking good. Now, before we we're looking good. Now, before we actually make the kind of data store and actually make the kind of data store and actually make the kind of data store and all that for our S3 compatible storage, all that for our S3 compatible storage, all that for our S3 compatible storage, we're going to need a cache location. we're going to need a cache location. we're going to need a cache location. Now, I believe I already set this up, Now, I believe I already set this up, Now, I believe I already set this up, but if you run the command make but if you run the command make but if you run the command make directory path, you could put this in directory path, you could put this in directory path, you could put this in your uh var cache your uh var cache your uh var cache and I have Proxmox backup server S3. and I have Proxmox backup server S3. and I have Proxmox backup server S3. Now, I think I already have this, so I'm Now, I think I already have this, so I'm Now, I think I already have this, so I'm going to LS and we're going to be going to LS and we're going to be going to LS and we're going to be putting this in our var cache directory. putting this in our var cache directory. putting this in our var cache directory. You can see we have a couple of things You can see we have a couple of things You can see we have a couple of things there. We're just going to make a new there. We're just going to make a new there. We're just going to make a new directory called Proxmox backup directory called Proxmox backup directory called Proxmox backup server-S3.

  28. server-S3. server-S3. Hit enter and then we're going to want Hit enter and then we're going to want Hit enter and then we're going to want to give the backup user and group to give the backup user and group to give the backup user and group permissions to be able to actually permissions to be able to actually permissions to be able to actually access that. Just like that. We're good access that. Just like that. We're good access that. Just like that. We're good to go. Now, I'm going to just give this to go. Now, I'm going to just give this to go. Now, I'm going to just give this a copy like that. It'll save me a little a copy like that. It'll save me a little a copy like that. It'll save me a little bit of trouble in a sec. But, before I bit of trouble in a sec. But, before I bit of trouble in a sec. But, before I move on, I do want to note that this move on, I do want to note that this move on, I do want to note that this cache, it's very important that it's one cache, it's very important that it's one cache, it's very important that it's one on an SSD, on an SSD, on an SSD, which is one of the reasons why I highly which is one of the reasons why I highly which is one of the reasons why I highly recommend you install the operating recommend you install the operating recommend you install the operating system on an actual SSD and not a hard system on an actual SSD and not a hard system on an actual SSD and not a hard drive. It should be persistent across drive. It should be persistent across drive. It should be persistent across reboots. It should not be a network reboots. It should not be a network reboots. It should not be a network drive. The more space, the better. I drive. The more space, the better. I drive. The more space, the better. I only got like 100 gigs in here. A little only got like 100 gigs in here. A little only got like 100 gigs in here. A little bit more than that would be ideal, but bit more than that would be ideal, but bit more than that would be ideal, but 100 for my use case is going to be fine. 100 for my use case is going to be fine. 100 for my use case is going to be fine. So, now what we're going to do, let's So, now what we're going to do, let's So, now what we're going to do, let's create a new data store and let's click create a new data store and let's click create a new data store and let's click add data store. This one for the type add data store. This one for the type add data store. This one for the type it's going to be S3. For the absolute it's going to be S3. For the absolute it's going to be S3. For the absolute path I'm going to paste in the path I path I'm going to paste in the path I path I'm going to paste in the path I just copied and it's at that point that just copied and it's at that point that just copied and it's at that point that I could give it a name something like I could give it a name something like I could give it a name something like Proxmox Backup Server {dash} offsite. Proxmox Backup Server {dash} offsite. Proxmox Backup Server {dash} offsite. And for endpoint ID we're going to pick And for endpoint ID we're going to pick And for endpoint ID we're going to pick MegaS4 and then the bucket you could see MegaS4 and then the bucket you could see MegaS4 and then the bucket you could see it automatically pulled that for our it automatically pulled that for our it automatically pulled that for our offsite bucket. Just a quick check if offsite bucket. Just a quick check if offsite bucket. Just a quick check if there's anything under advanced.

  29. there's anything under advanced. there's anything under advanced. Nope. And while we're here we might as Nope. And while we're here we might as Nope. And while we're here we might as well set up our prune options similar to well set up our prune options similar to well set up our prune options similar to earlier and I'm going to go with earlier and I'm going to go with earlier and I'm going to go with basically the same thing. So seven not basically the same thing. So seven not basically the same thing. So seven not 76. 76. 76. Monthly six, weekly four, yearly one. Monthly six, weekly four, yearly one. Monthly six, weekly four, yearly one. That looks good. So we could go ahead That looks good. So we could go ahead That looks good. So we could go ahead and click on add and we shouldn't have and click on add and we shouldn't have and click on add and we shouldn't have any issues. We'll see. Hey hey hey, any issues. We'll see. Hey hey hey, any issues. We'll see. Hey hey hey, there we go. Sweet. Now it does say 95 there we go. Sweet. Now it does say 95 there we go. Sweet. Now it does say 95 gigs. Again, that's just cash as this gigs. Again, that's just cash as this gigs. Again, that's just cash as this fills up it's going to remove chunks to fills up it's going to remove chunks to fills up it's going to remove chunks to add more to be able to do transfers. Now add more to be able to do transfers. Now add more to be able to do transfers. Now from there there's kind of two paths from there there's kind of two paths from there there's kind of two paths that you could go. You could set the that you could go. You could set the that you could go. You could set the offsite backups as the primary backups, offsite backups as the primary backups, offsite backups as the primary backups, but I I like to keep the local backups but I I like to keep the local backups but I I like to keep the local backups as primary because it makes restoring a as primary because it makes restoring a as primary because it makes restoring a lot quicker and things like that. lot quicker and things like that. lot quicker and things like that. Offsite is purely for like disaster Offsite is purely for like disaster Offsite is purely for like disaster recovery. At least for me it's all up to recovery. At least for me it's all up to recovery. At least for me it's all up to you. So actually setting this up is you. So actually setting this up is you. So actually setting this up is pretty simple. What we're going to want pretty simple. What we're going to want pretty simple. What we're going to want to do is go over to data stores and to do is go over to data stores and to do is go over to data stores and select our Proxmox Backup Server offsite select our Proxmox Backup Server offsite select our Proxmox Backup Server offsite and then right here under sync jobs and then right here under sync jobs and then right here under sync jobs we're going to add a new one. This is we're going to add a new one. This is we're going to add a new one. This is going to be a pull job because this data going to be a pull job because this data going to be a pull job because this data set is going to pull from our local set is going to pull from our local set is going to pull from our local vault. So we're going to go over here vault. So we're going to go over here vault. So we're going to go over here select local. The data source is going select local. The data source is going select local. The data source is going to be vault and you can get real to be vault and you can get real to be vault and you can get real specific by picking the actual name specific by picking the actual name specific by picking the actual name spaces if you want to, but I want all of spaces if you want to, but I want all of spaces if you want to, but I want all of them to be backed up to this single them to be backed up to this single them to be backed up to this single bucket. Our sync schedule, this is bucket. Our sync schedule, this is bucket. Our sync schedule, this is something I might want to change maybe something I might want to change maybe something I might want to change maybe everyday at these two times and other everyday at these two times and other everyday at these two times and other than that everything looks good. It's than that everything looks good. It's than that everything looks good. It's important to schedule it after your important to schedule it after your important to schedule it after your backups complete. So actually let's do backups complete. So actually let's do backups complete. So actually let's do everyday at 2:30. So, for now, all this everyday at 2:30. So, for now, all this everyday at 2:30. So, for now, all this looks good. Let's go ahead and just

  30. looks good. Let's go ahead and just looks good. Let's go ahead and just click on add. And now, with the magic of click on add. And now, with the magic of click on add. And now, with the magic of video editing, it's actually been video editing, it's actually been video editing, it's actually been a couple days. I've I've been absolutely a couple days. I've I've been absolutely a couple days. I've I've been absolutely struggling because my I moved, as you struggling because my I moved, as you struggling because my I moved, as you can tell by my background, my internet can tell by my background, my internet can tell by my background, my internet is capped at 30 megabytes a second is capped at 30 megabytes a second is capped at 30 megabytes a second upload. So, it's taking some time. And I upload. So, it's taking some time. And I upload. So, it's taking some time. And I don't even think it's done yet. Let's don't even think it's done yet. Let's don't even think it's done yet. Let's check. Obviously, it has nothing to do check. Obviously, it has nothing to do check. Obviously, it has nothing to do with Mega. It's my It's my internet. with Mega. It's my It's my internet. with Mega. It's my It's my internet. But, right here, we got the sync job. But, right here, we got the sync job. But, right here, we got the sync job. And would you look at that? It's still And would you look at that? It's still And would you look at that? It's still going. But, we almost got a terabyte in going. But, we almost got a terabyte in going. But, we almost got a terabyte in there, so that's good. And you can see there, so that's good. And you can see there, so that's good. And you can see if I go over to object storage, we go to if I go over to object storage, we go to if I go over to object storage, we go to our PBS offsite, we got a bucket, and we our PBS offsite, we got a bucket, and we our PBS offsite, we got a bucket, and we got some chunks. And we got a lot of got some chunks. And we got a lot of got some chunks. And we got a lot of chunks. And of course, in the next video chunks. And of course, in the next video chunks. And of course, in the next video on this, we're going to be restoring on this, we're going to be restoring on this, we're going to be restoring some chunks and doing a lot more other some chunks and doing a lot more other some chunks and doing a lot more other cool stuff that you're going to want to cool stuff that you're going to want to cool stuff that you're going to want to know if you set up Proxmox Backup know if you set up Proxmox Backup know if you set up Proxmox Backup Server.
