minds and so it was this huge mental minds and so it was this huge mental rearrangement and the seventies if you rearrangement and the seventies if you rearrangement and the seventies if you look at the material I mean it there was look at the material I mean it there was look at the material I mean it there was a lot of introspection and it wasn't a lot of introspection and it wasn't a lot of introspection and it wasn't just introspection amongst the general just introspection amongst the general just introspection amongst the general population but the military also and the population but the military also and the population but the military also and the political class when we eventually I political class when we eventually I political class when we eventually I believe was it Panama like 1989 or believe was it Panama like 1989 or believe was it Panama like 1989 or something when that happened I think something when that happened I think something when that happened I think President Bush the first had said President Bush the first had said President Bush the first had said something like you know we finally something like you know we finally something like you know we finally kicked the Vietnam syndrome or whatnot kicked the Vietnam syndrome or whatnot kicked the Vietnam syndrome or whatnot and the Vietnam syndrome was the the and the Vietnam syndrome was the the and the Vietnam syndrome was the the after effect where all of a sudden the after effect where all of a sudden the after effect where all of a sudden the United States didn't want to go and mess United States didn't want to go and mess United States didn't want to go and mess with other countries for a while we'd with other countries for a while we'd with other countries for a while we'd had enough of that for a while it wasn't had enough of that for a while it wasn't had enough of that for a while it wasn't just the the soldiers who had died and just the the soldiers who had died and just the the soldiers who had died and were wounded or the veterans who were were wounded or the veterans who were were wounded or the veterans who were increasingly showing signs of being increasingly showing signs of being increasingly showing signs of being badly affected by what happened to them badly affected by what happened to them badly affected by what happened to them in the war but the cost and the blowback in the war but the cost and the blowback in the war but the cost and the blowback and there was just this feeling for a and there was just this feeling for a and there was just this feeling for a while no more but again time passes and while no more but again time passes and while no more but again time passes and people change and and you forget just people change and and you forget just people change and and you forget just how bad it can be when things go wrong how bad it can be when things go wrong how bad it can be when things go wrong and make no mistake about it things went and make no mistake about it things went and make no mistake about it things went wrong in Vietnam the idea that the wrong in Vietnam the idea that the wrong in Vietnam the idea that the United States of America after the United States of America after the United States of America after the Second World War we're still at this Second World War we're still at this Second World War we're still at this pinnacle of industrial might and pinnacle of industrial might and pinnacle of industrial might and military power the idea that a bunch of military power the idea that a bunch of military power the idea that a bunch of backward guerrillas in what we called a backward guerrillas in what we called a backward guerrillas in what we called a third world country with no money and I third world country with no money and I third world country with no money and I mean they've got no air there's there's mean they've got no air there's there's mean they've got no air there's there's nothing that they could beat us that nothing that they could beat us that nothing that they could beat us that right there was a hard pill to swallow right there was a hard pill to swallow right there was a hard pill to swallow but it reminded military and political

but it reminded military and political but it reminded military and political leaders once again that war is not leaders once again that war is not leaders once again that war is not disconnected from politics as Clausewitz disconnected from politics as Clausewitz disconnected from politics as Clausewitz so famously said and what you're really so famously said and what you're really so famously said and what you're really after in any of these situations is a after in any of these situations is a after in any of these situations is a political settlement or a political political settlement or a political political settlement or a political change if your enemy or your adversary change if your enemy or your adversary change if your enemy or your adversary or your opponent does not give in when or your opponent does not give in when or your opponent does not give in when you beat the hell out of them and give you beat the hell out of them and give you beat the hell out of them and give you what you want politically you don't you what you want politically you don't you what you want politically you don't win the United States did not lose a win the United States did not lose a win the United States did not lose a major encounter in the Vietnam War and major encounter in the Vietnam War and major encounter in the Vietnam War and the bigger the encounter the more likely the bigger the encounter the more likely the bigger the encounter the more likely the United States won and won Bay the United States won and won Bay the United States won and won Bay one of the most famous most Americans one of the most famous most Americans one of the most famous most Americans that know anything about this war have that know anything about this war have that know anything about this war have heard the words Tet Offensive before it heard the words Tet Offensive before it heard the words Tet Offensive before it was a famous Vietnamese northern was a famous Vietnamese northern was a famous Vietnamese northern Vietnamese attack in many places at once Vietnamese attack in many places at once Vietnamese attack in many places at once that was a disaster for them but it was that was a disaster for them but it was that was a disaster for them but it was not portrayed that way at the time I not portrayed that way at the time I not portrayed that way at the time I remember one veteran explaining to me remember one veteran explaining to me remember one veteran explaining to me just how unbelievable the casualties just how unbelievable the casualties just how unbelievable the casualties were that the North Vietnamese and Viet were that the North Vietnamese and Viet were that the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong suffered in that offensive but it Cong suffered in that offensive but it Cong suffered in that offensive but it wasn't about body counts they weren't wasn't about body counts they weren't wasn't about body counts they weren't fighting a war for body counts they were fighting a war for body counts they were fighting a war for body counts they were fighting a war for a political fighting a war for a political fighting a war for a political settlement and because the United States settlement and because the United States settlement and because the United States had lied to its people so often about had lied to its people so often about had lied to its people so often about how the war was going what the other how the war was going what the other how the war was going what the other side did by sacrificing a ton of their side did by sacrificing a ton of their side did by sacrificing a ton of their people and materiel was say hey Wars not people and materiel was say hey Wars not people and materiel was say hey Wars not over and at the same time basically over and at the same time basically over and at the same time basically demonstrate to everyone that what demonstrate to everyone that what demonstrate to everyone that what they've been told was false which turned they've been told was false which turned they've been told was false which turned the people once more against the the people once more against the the people once more against the political regime if you're in if you're political regime if you're in if you're political regime if you're in if you're if you think about this I hate to do

less and less constrained as the war goes on and less constrained as the war goes on and less constrained as the war goes on and when you see some of these there's one when you see some of these there's one when you see some of these there's one famous firefight where the reporter is famous firefight where the reporter is famous firefight where the reporter is well I think it's during tent that are at a wall I think maybe Marines that are at a wall I think maybe Marines that are at a wall I think maybe Marines that are at a wall and they're fighting something at a wall and they're fighting something at a wall and they're fighting something right on the other side of the wall and right on the other side of the wall and right on the other side of the wall and they are reloading their weapons and they are reloading their weapons and they are reloading their weapons and then standing up and shooting at the then standing up and shooting at the then standing up and shooting at the other side of the wall and the reporter other side of the wall and the reporter other side of the wall and the reporter walks right up and starts interviewing walks right up and starts there and Doug Ramsey passionately cared there and Doug Ramsey passionately cared about the Vietnamese he loved he learned about the Vietnamese he loved he learned about the Vietnamese he loved he learned Vietnamese um he he wrote a lot of stuff Vietnamese um he he wrote a lot of stuff Vietnamese um he he wrote a lot of stuff for some of his letters home which he for some of his letters home which he for some of his letters home which he gave me were hugely moving but then gave me were hugely moving but then gave me were hugely moving but then beginning of 66 he was driving a truck beginning of 66 he was driving a truck beginning of 66 he was driving a truck with a load of rice up to some village with a load of rice up to some village with a load of rice up to some village and he got ambushed by the Vietcong and and he got ambushed by the Vietcong and and he got ambushed by the Vietcong and captured and he spent the next seven captured and he spent the next seven captured and he spent the next seven years not in the Hanoi Hilton but in a years not in the Hanoi Hilton but in a years not in the Hanoi Hilton but in a bamboo cage in the jungle seven years he bamboo cage in the jungle seven years he bamboo cage in the jungle seven years he had malaria 123 times he had every kind had malaria 123 times he had every kind had malaria 123 times he had every kind of other tropical disease how he of other tropical disease how he of other tropical disease how he survived god only knows and yet he came survived god only knows and yet he came survived god only knows and yet he came out of this experience out of this experience out of this experience his health absolutely destroyed I mean his health absolutely destroyed I mean his health absolutely destroyed I mean when I saw him he could hardly move his when I saw him he could hardly move his when I saw him he could hardly move his body at all but his mind was still right body at all but his mind was still right body at all but his mind was still right on and he talked so movingly because on and he talked so movingly because on and he talked so movingly because even though he'd suffered so terribly at even though he'd suffered so terribly at even though he'd suffered so terribly at the hands of the Communists arm that he the hands of the Communists arm that he the hands of the Communists arm that he was completely even-handed in seeing the was completely even-handed in seeing the was completely even-handed in seeing the good stuff and the bad stuff about and good stuff and the bad stuff about and good stuff and the bad stuff about and he knew the Vietcong having been their he knew the Vietcong having been their he knew the Vietcong having been their prisoner for seven years better than prisoner for seven years better than prisoner for seven years better than almost anybody else and I mean he told almost anybody else and I mean he told almost anybody else and I mean he told me some very funny stories I mean one of me some very funny stories I mean one of me some very funny stories I mean one of them that always stuck in my mind he them that always stuck in my mind he them that always stuck in my mind he said one day when he was in being said one day when he was in being said one day when he was in being interviewed by his interrogators and um interviewed by his interrogators and um interviewed by his interrogators and um he told them that he thought that um the he told them that he thought that um the he told them that he thought that um the Americans were in Vietnam 10 percent to Americans were in Vietnam 10 percent to Americans were in Vietnam 10 percent to help the Vietnamese people a 90 percent help the Vietnamese people a 90 percent help the Vietnamese people a 90 percent to hold back the Chinese and marchi to hold back the Chinese and marchi to hold back the Chinese and marchi tongue and he said the Comedie tongue and he said the Comedie tongue and he said the Comedie interrogator applied in that case why do interrogator applied in that case why do interrogator applied in that case why do you not go and fight him in China we do you not go and fight him in China we do you not go and fight him in China we do not like the Chinese either and another

you know into Laos and trying to cut off you know into Laos and trying to cut off the Ho Chi Minh Trail so that the people the Ho Chi Minh Trail so that the people the Ho Chi Minh Trail so that the people in the South could I mean it's it's in the South could I mean it's it's in the South could I mean it's it's fascinating to you know the word fascinating to you know the word fascinating to you know the word watershed moment the phrase watershed watershed moment the phrase watershed watershed moment the phrase watershed moment is overused but it's hard to not moment is overused but it's hard to not moment is overused but it's hard to not notice the difference between 1963 notice the difference between 1963 notice the difference between 1963 United States of America and 1973 United United States of America and 1973 United United States of America and 1973 United States of America and not attribute a States of America and not attribute a States of America and not attribute a large part of the disillusionment and large part of the disillusionment and large part of the disillusionment and the change in attitudes to that war does the change in attitudes to that war does the change in attitudes to that war does that slow of course you're of course that slow of course you're of course that slow of course you're of course you're right I mean I think two points you're right I mean I think two points you're right I mean I think two points that also to go back to your question that also to go back to your question that also to go back to your question about why I thought there's a book to be about why I thought there's a book to be about why I thought there's a book to be written two things that I what I always written two things that I what I always written two things that I what I always don't do I think a lot of people make don't do I think a lot of people make don't do I think a lot of people make mistake when they look back at mistake when they look back at mistake when they look back at historical events that they look at them historical events that they look at them historical events that they look at them through a 20-18 through a 20-18 through a 20-18 prism and to me the only way to ride prism and to me the only way to ride prism and to me the only way to ride history is to close your eyes and try history is to close your eyes and try history is to close your eyes and try and remember how things look to people and remember how things look to people and remember how things look to people then and the first thing to be said then and the first thing to be said then and the first thing to be said about the 1950s and 1960s there really about the 1950s and 1960s there really about the 1950s and 1960s there really was a communist threat that worldwide um was a communist threat that worldwide um was a communist threat that worldwide um the the Soviet Union and the Chinese did the the Soviet Union and the Chinese did the the Soviet Union and the Chinese did represent deeply unpleasant totalitarian represent deeply unpleasant totalitarian represent deeply unpleasant totalitarian forces and history I'm quite confident forces and history I'm quite confident forces and history I'm quite confident will show that the United States was will show that the United States was will show that the United States was absolutely right to lead the Western absolutely right to lead the Western absolutely right to lead the Western nations in resisting we were the good nations in resisting we were the good nations in resisting we were the good guys in the Cold War and I have no doubt guys in the Cold War and I have no doubt guys in the Cold War and I have no doubt about that so sometimes when people say about that so sometimes when people say about that so sometimes when people say oh well never really was a communist oh well never really was a communist oh well never really was a communist threat but most certainly was a threat but most certainly was a threat but most certainly was a communist threat they were very nasty communist threat they were very nasty communist threat they were very nasty people however they did not they did get people however they did not they did get people however they did not they did get a terrible tangle in Indochina because

to it that um the Vietnam War era close to it that um the Vietnam War era close to it that um the Vietnam War era reporters enjoyed a notable advantage reporters enjoyed a notable advantage reporters enjoyed a notable advantage over most of their successors in the over most of their successors in the over most of their successors in the 21st century because they themselves had 21st century because they themselves had 21st century because they themselves had often served in uniform and were often served in uniform and were often served in uniform and were familiar with weapons and military ways familiar with weapons and military ways familiar with weapons and military ways allowed us to and and the other thing allowed us to and and the other thing allowed us to and and the other thing that I found interesting was when you that I found interesting was when you that I found interesting was when you talked about the line that some talked about the line that some talked about the line that some Americans went to their graves believing Americans went to their graves believing Americans went to their graves believing that reporters betrayed their country that reporters betrayed their country that reporters betrayed their country while winning plaudits from the media while winning plaudits from the media while winning plaudits from the media counterparts around the world can you mean for example I don't think we've mean for example I don't think we've mean for example I don't think we've seen because before that war that the seen because before that war that the seen because reporters who are we have embedded reporters who are we have embedded reporters who are essentially working with the governments essentially working with the governments essentially working with the governments I don't think we've ever seen the kind I don't think we've ever seen the kind I don't think we've ever seen the kind of freedom to show news the way they did of freedom to show news the way they did of freedom to show news the way they did in that war and do you think that was a in that war and do you think that was a in that war and do you think that was a good thing or a bad thing and do you good thing or a bad thing and do you good thing or a bad thing and do you think the reporters at the time did a think the reporters at the time did a think the reporters at the time did a good enough job pointing out what you good enough job pointing out what you good enough job pointing out what you mentioned the other side's mentioned the other side's mentioned the other side's transgressions and atrocities and transgressions and atrocities and transgressions and atrocities and everything so that things would be equal everything so that things would be equal everything so that things would be equal a little bit well I've said in the

a little bit well I've said in the a little bit well I've said in the introduction to my book that I think introduction to my book that I think introduction to my book that I think that um many of the reporters who served that um many of the reporters who served that um many of the reporters who served in Vietnam didn't outstanding job a in Vietnam didn't outstanding job a in Vietnam didn't outstanding job a reporting entirely accurately what they reporting entirely accurately what they reporting entirely accurately what they themselves saw and knew but where they themselves saw and knew but where they themselves saw and knew but where they failed was because was so much going on failed was because was so much going on failed was because was so much going on on the other side that they had no on the other side that they had no on the other side that they had no access to but all the incredibly bad access to but all the incredibly bad access to but all the incredibly bad stuff that the other side was doing stuff that the other side was doing stuff that the other side was doing never got any sort of show and I quite never got any sort of show and I quite never got any sort of show and I quite understand in a very small way I was understand in a very small way I was understand in a very small way I was party to it myself because you know when party to it myself because you know when party to it myself because you know when I was reporting there from BBC and I was reporting there from BBC and I was reporting there from BBC and newspapers in the early seventies and newspapers in the early seventies and newspapers in the early seventies and all the time you were seeing shocking all the time you were seeing shocking all the time you were seeing shocking stuff being out going on all around you stuff being out going on all around you stuff being out going on all around you and you were witness to the corruption and you were witness to the corruption and you were witness to the corruption and the incompetence of South Vietnamese and the incompetence of South Vietnamese and the incompetence of South Vietnamese government but we just didn't pay enough government but we just didn't pay enough government but we just didn't pay enough attention to stuff we couldn't see and attention to stuff we couldn't see and attention to stuff we couldn't see and the United States whereas it was the United States whereas it was the United States whereas it was absolutely true that there was a huge absolutely true that there was a huge absolutely true that there was a huge credibility gap because a lot of the credibility gap because a lot of the credibility gap because a lot of the stuff that was we were told at briefings stuff that was we were told at briefings stuff that was we were told at briefings and saw with absolute garbage and saw with absolute garbage and saw with absolute garbage but the numbers always start but body but the numbers always start but body but the numbers always start but body counts and so on the frightful lies were counts and so on the frightful lies were counts and so on the frightful lies were told in fact Walt boomer the general told in fact Walt boomer the general told in fact Walt boomer the general Marine Corps general he said to me that Marine Corps general he said to me that Marine Corps general he said to me that one of the lessons he brought home from one of the lessons he brought home from one of the lessons he brought home from three tours in Vietnam was telling the three tours in Vietnam was telling the three tours in Vietnam was telling the truth but the curious thing that the truth but the curious thing that the truth but the curious thing that the sort of contradiction that on the one sort of contradiction that on the one sort of contradiction that on the one hand a lot of senior Americans did not hand a lot of senior Americans did not hand a lot of senior Americans did not tell the truth to the world about what tell the truth to the world about what tell the truth to the world about what was happening up but on the other hand was happening up but on the other hand was happening up but on the other hand America did preserve a commitment that America did preserve a commitment that America did preserve a commitment that was very honorable to let us see for was very honorable to let us see for was very honorable to let us see for ourselves so that in a way that's never

that would be expected in future that would be expected in future conflicts and yet now looking 50 years conflicts and yet now looking 50 years conflicts and yet now looking 50 years back on things if you if really if you back on things if you if really if you back on things if you if really if you started in the Second World War there's started in the Second World War there's started in the Second World War there's very little of that large spike in very little of that large spike in very little of that large spike in anti-war activity I mean not only were anti-war activity I mean not only were anti-war activity I mean not only were there no protesters protesting the there no protesters protesting the there no protesters protesting the bombing of Germany in Japan but there bombing of Germany in Japan but there bombing of Germany in Japan but there really by 1960 standards weren't that really by 1960 standards weren't that really by 1960 standards weren't that much after the Vietnam War for any of much after the Vietnam War for any of much after the Vietnam War for any of the conflicts what do you think accounts the conflicts what do you think accounts the conflicts what do you think accounts for that being such an outlier situation for that being such an outlier situation for that being such an outlier situation well I I've suggested in my book I mean well I I've suggested in my book I mean well I I've suggested in my book I mean remember I was living here in this in remember I was living here in this in remember I was living here in this in the late 60s so I saw it all firsthand I the late 60s so I saw it all firsthand I the late 60s so I saw it all firsthand I saw the demonstrations and the whole saw the demonstrations and the whole saw the demonstrations and the whole thing but all sorts of stuff got tangled thing but all sorts of stuff got tangled thing but all sorts of stuff got tangled up together up together up together it was the worldwide youth movement it was the worldwide youth movement it was the worldwide youth movement against the established order and the against the established order and the against the established order and the revolt against the old sexual morality revolt against the old sexual morality revolt against the old sexual morality and in 2000 uh the and and in 2000 uh the and and in 2000 uh the and this stuff got rolled up with Vietnam this stuff got rolled up with Vietnam this stuff got rolled up with Vietnam and you've got to remember kids in those and you've got to remember kids in those and you've got to remember kids in those days we're putting posters on their days we're putting posters on their days we're putting posters on their college walls of market um who anybody college walls of market um who anybody college walls of market um who anybody who knows anything knows was one of the who knows anything knows was one of the who knows anything knows was one of the great mass murderers of the 20th century great mass murderers of the 20th century great mass murderers of the 20th century up there with with Hitler so um there up there with with Hitler so um there up there with with Hitler so um there was incredible naivety among the kids was incredible naivety among the kids was incredible naivety among the kids the kids were right about one thing the the kids were right about one thing the the kids were right about one thing the war was a disaster but of course one of war was a disaster but of course one of war was a disaster but of course one of the things that drove the protest the things that drove the protest the things that drove the protest movement was the fact that a lot of them movement was the fact that a lot of them movement was the fact that a lot of them were terrified of being drafted that were terrified of being drafted that were terrified of being drafted that they were afraid they were going to have they were afraid they were going to have they were afraid they were going to have to waste two years of their lives in to waste two years of their lives in to waste two years of their lives in uniform and maybe lose their lives uniform and maybe lose their lives uniform and maybe lose their lives altogether so I mixed up with their altogether so I mixed up with their altogether so I mixed up with their principled objections to the war a mixed

principled objections to the war a mixed principled objections to the war a mixed up with the whole youth revolt um was up with the whole youth revolt um was up with the whole youth revolt um was they felt they had skin in the game they felt they had skin in the game they felt they had skin in the game about about the danger to themselves and about about the danger to themselves and about about the danger to themselves and um they were I mean it was the um they were I mean it was the um they were I mean it was the extraordinary time to be here I mean extraordinary time to be here I mean extraordinary time to be here I mean some of the stuff that I saw myself was some of the stuff that I saw myself was some of the stuff that I saw myself was you actually felt America was falling you actually felt America was falling you actually felt America was falling apart in 1968 and in fact the fact he apart in 1968 and in fact the fact he apart in 1968 and in fact the fact he didn't fall apart I've never gone of a didn't fall apart I've never gone of a didn't fall apart I've never gone of a bear of America ever since once always I bear of America ever since once always I bear of America ever since once always I always believed passionately this day in always believed passionately this day in always believed passionately this day in America's capacity of a reinvention America's capacity of a reinvention America's capacity of a reinvention because I saw what a mess you could get because I saw what a mess you could get because I saw what a mess you could get itself into in 68 and come out the other itself into in 68 and come out the other itself into in 68 and come out the other side but no subsequent war the other side but no subsequent war the other side but no subsequent war the other thing we must remember the whole thing thing we must remember the whole thing thing we must remember the whole thing was much smaller and we've hardly talked was much smaller and we've hardly talked was much smaller and we've hardly talked too much in this conversation about all too much in this conversation about all too much in this conversation about all the battlefield stuff and um if you look the battlefield stuff and um if you look the battlefield stuff and um if you look at casualties I mean I've written about at casualties I mean I've written about at casualties I mean I've written about one battle in one chapter of my book one battle in one chapter of my book one battle in one chapter of my book called dido that absolutely nobody's called dido that absolutely nobody's called dido that absolutely nobody's ever heard of and this was a three day ever heard of and this was a three day ever heard of and this was a three day battle in May 1968 in which a marine battle in May 1968 in which a marine battle in May 1968 in which a marine battalion was more or less wiped out up battalion was more or less wiped out up battalion was more or less wiped out up near the Demilitarized Zone in three near the Demilitarized Zone in three near the Demilitarized Zone in three days of battle in which they lost eighty days of battle in which they lost eighty days of battle in which they lost eighty one kill and I forget about 250 wounded one kill and I forget about 250 wounded one kill and I forget about 250 wounded and they ended up with one unwanted and they ended up with one unwanted and they ended up with one unwanted officer and about 150 men still fit for officer and about 150 men still fit for officer and about 150 men still fit for combat and nothing remotely like that combat and nothing remotely like that combat and nothing remotely like that happened in Iraq course or in happened in Iraq course or in happened in Iraq course or in Afghanistan I mean the scale this was a Afghanistan I mean the scale this was a Afghanistan I mean the scale this was a really murderous bloody business in some really murderous bloody business in some really murderous bloody business in some of the stuff people did and some of the of the stuff people did and some of the of the stuff people did and some of the start people experienced I mean it was

worst war the line that Vietnam is the worst war the line that Vietnam is the worst war that ever was I mean all the walls are that ever was I mean all the walls are that ever was I mean all the walls are pretty ghastly but it was a hell of a pretty ghastly but it was a hell of a pretty ghastly but it was a hell of a lot worse um in the scale of the lot worse um in the scale of the lot worse um in the scale of the bloodbath and um anything remotely in bloodbath and um anything remotely in bloodbath and um anything remotely in Afghanistan or Iraq and these are Afghanistan or Iraq and these are Afghanistan or Iraq and these are volunteer volunteer volunteer they've been fought by volunteer they've been fought by volunteer they've been fought by volunteer soldiers well you remember very well soldiers well you remember very well soldiers well you remember very well that they used to publish photos in that they used to publish photos in that they used to publish photos in timer or Life magazine of everyone timer or Life magazine of everyone timer or Life magazine of everyone killed that week and sometimes the killed that week and sometimes the killed that week and sometimes the casualty levels could get high enough casualty levels could get high enough casualty levels could get high enough hundreds a week and then I would see hundreds a week and then I would see hundreds a week and then I would see hundred awake and I was trying to figure hundred awake and I was trying to figure hundred awake and I was trying to figure out how we would react today in the out how we would react today in the out how we would react today in the United States two casualties were about United States two casualties were about United States two casualties were about well and those did that brings me back well and those did that brings me back well and those did that brings me back to something you had talked about the to something you had talked about the to something you had talked about the war being a disaster and then we had war being a disaster and then we had war being a disaster and then we had talked about the protesters in the media talked about the protesters in the media talked about the protesters in the media and everything it does make me wonder and everything it does make me wonder and everything it does make me wonder though what is the responsibility if though what is the responsibility if though what is the responsibility if your government seems on a course to your government seems on a course to your government seems on a course to continue doubling down on something that continue doubling down on something that continue doubling down on something that everyone knows is a disaster in a everyone knows is a disaster in a everyone knows is a disaster in a democratic or republican system what is democratic or republican system what is democratic or republican system what is the role of the population in terms of the role of the population in terms of the role of the population in terms of checking a government that as you said checking a government that as you said checking a government that as you said didn't know what they were getting into didn't know what they were getting into didn't know what they were getting into or didn't know what they were getting or didn't know what they were getting or didn't know what they were getting into but found no way out of where they into but found no way out of where they into but found no way out of where they were going I mean could one make the were going I mean could one make the were going I mean could one make the case that it was better to have that case that it was better to have that case that it was better to have that kind of pressure on the part of the kind of pressure on the part of the kind of pressure on the part of the electorate versus what might have electorate versus what might have electorate versus what might have happened if that pressure had not been happened if that pressure had not been happened if that pressure had not been there when I was living there in the there when I was living there in the there when I was living there in the United States in the late 60s I could United States in the late 60s I could United States in the late 60s I could see a lot of Americans especially in see a lot of Americans especially in see a lot of Americans especially in middle America and I got to know Middle middle America and I got to know Middle middle America and I got to know Middle America very well in that era and I America very well in that era and I America very well in that era and I spent a lot of time in places like

spent a lot of time in places like spent a lot of time in places like Minnesota and Wisconsin and so and you Minnesota and Wisconsin and so and you Minnesota and Wisconsin and so and you saw very patriotic Americans wrestling saw very patriotic Americans wrestling saw very patriotic Americans wrestling with the dilemma of where loyalty lay with the dilemma of where loyalty lay with the dilemma of where loyalty lay did you just blindly go on supporting did you just blindly go on supporting did you just blindly go on supporting your president or or did you not your president or or did you not your president or or did you not they weren't that kind to go out and they weren't that kind to go out and they weren't that kind to go out and protest in the streets but it's a very protest in the streets but it's a very protest in the streets but it's a very difficult issue and um I think it is difficult issue and um I think it is difficult issue and um I think it is right to speak out but it's never easy right to speak out but it's never easy right to speak out but it's never easy to decide where the patriotic route lies to decide where the patriotic route lies to decide where the patriotic route lies and I remember one of the most moving and I remember one of the most moving and I remember one of the most moving things that happened to me when I was things that happened to me when I was things that happened to me when I was there in 71 and I've been up reporting there in 71 and I've been up reporting there in 71 and I've been up reporting for BBC a battle of place called far for BBC a battle of place called far for BBC a battle of place called far base six up in the in the near the lower base six up in the in the near the lower base six up in the in the near the lower border element murderous business and we border element murderous business and we border element murderous business and we it's the ride back psyche it's the ride back psyche it's the ride back psyche on a c-130 that was only one other on a c-130 that was only one other on a c-130 that was only one other camera crew all hues so we're in the camera crew all hues so we're in the camera crew all hues so we're in the cargo hold of this huge aircraft and cargo hold of this huge aircraft and cargo hold of this huge aircraft and down at the end of the plane are the down at the end of the plane are the down at the end of the plane are the opposite end from us was the body bag opposite end from us was the body bag opposite end from us was the body bag containing an American Sergeant and an containing an American Sergeant and an containing an American Sergeant and an adviser who've been killed in the battle adviser who've been killed in the battle adviser who've been killed in the battle and there's his body bag with all his and there's his body bag with all his and there's his body bag with all his stuff around him his guitar and his stuff around him his guitar and his stuff around him his guitar and his sound system and all his kit and so on sound system and all his kit and so on sound system and all his kit and so on we had an hour and a half or two hours we had an hour and a half or two hours we had an hour and a half or two hours on the plane down to Saigon looking I on the plane down to Saigon looking I on the plane down to Saigon looking I was sort of looking at this up at that was sort of looking at this up at that was sort of looking at this up at that poor bastard and he's and his body bag poor bastard and he's and his body bag poor bastard and he's and his body bag and so on and I thought we're now in a and so on and I thought we're now in a and so on and I thought we're now in a situation where nobody wants to be the situation where nobody wants to be the situation where nobody wants to be the last American to die in a war that's last American to die in a war that's last American to die in a war that's obviously lost and I think one of the obviously lost and I think one of the obviously lost and I think one of the things that one does bitterly reproach
