microconf which is in person and and microconf which is in person and and virtual virtual virtual so i'm familiar with there's a lot of so i'm familiar with there's a lot of so i'm familiar with there's a lot of challenges to it and there's a lot to challenges to it and there's a lot to challenges to it and there's a lot to manage manage manage um but there's a lot of pluses a lot of um but there's a lot of pluses a lot of um but there's a lot of pluses a lot of pros that come along with doing it i pros that come along with doing it i pros that come along with doing it i think you touched on a few there think you touched on a few there think you touched on a few there is that because if i just want feedback is that because if i just want feedback is that because if i just want feedback from users from users from users i can ask for um i can ask for um i can ask for um support i could ask people to email support i could ask people to email support i could ask people to email right give us feedback here's a form right give us feedback here's a form right give us feedback here's a form here's an email here's an email here's an email but how is getting feedback but how is getting feedback but how is getting feedback in a community setting how is it better in a community setting how is it better in a community setting how is it better than just direct one-on-one than just direct one-on-one than just direct one-on-one connections you might do in in an connections you might do in in an connections you might do in in an intercom widget or intercom widget or intercom widget or or via you know a response to an email or via you know a response to an email or via you know a response to an email yeah i mean i guess it you know depends yeah i mean i guess it you know depends yeah i mean i guess it you know depends on the situation but um on the situation but um on the situation but um i guess when things are open when other i guess when things are open when other i guess when things are open when other people can people can people can see what's going on i think it's like see what's going on i think it's like see what's going on i think it's like really useful really useful really useful to have that like people come together to have that like people come together to have that like people come together and they share ideas and they share ideas and they share ideas for example they share problems and um for example they share problems and um for example they share problems and um hopefully um it can also like reduce hopefully um it can also like reduce hopefully um it can also like reduce like like like um support type queries as well if other um support type queries as well if other um support type queries as well if other people are seeing that people are seeing that people are seeing that others are having challenges or it others are having challenges or it others are having challenges or it doesn't even have to be round challenges doesn't even have to be round challenges doesn't even have to be round challenges it you know it can be it you know it can be it you know it can be around successes or sharing tips around successes or sharing tips around successes or sharing tips i think is another another good one with i think is another another good one with i think is another another good one with sas sas sas is like if you can use a tool in various is like if you can use a tool in various is like if you can use a tool in various different ways different ways different ways it's um really useful to be able to see it's um really useful to be able to see it's um really useful to be able to see what other people are doing what other people are doing what other people are doing and how how they're doing it and and to and how how they're doing it and and to and how how they're doing it and and to be able to encourage people to do that

be able to encourage people to do that be able to encourage people to do that i think can really kind of feed back i think can really kind of feed back i think can really kind of feed back into the whole loop of into the whole loop of into the whole loop of building a sass and building a sass and building a sass and often i think features can can arise often i think features can can arise often i think features can can arise from it problems can arise from it so um from it problems can arise from it so um from it problems can arise from it so um i know like at orbit you know they're i know like at orbit you know they're i know like at orbit you know they're really good at just you know really good at just you know really good at just you know jumping on feedback requests and bug jumping on feedback requests and bug jumping on feedback requests and bug reports and just like reports and just like reports and just like fixing things really quickly and that fixing things really quickly and that fixing things really quickly and that builds a real sense of um trust builds a real sense of um trust builds a real sense of um trust in the in the company in the product in the in the company in the product in the in the company in the product got it and you know if i'm a let's say got it and you know if i'm a let's say got it and you know if i'm a let's say i'm a single bootstrapped founder i'm a single bootstrapped founder i'm a single bootstrapped founder and i'm trying to build an app launch and i'm trying to build an app launch and i'm trying to build an app launch you know market it you know market it you know market it do sales have you seen anyone in that do sales have you seen anyone in that do sales have you seen anyone in that situation be able to situation be able to situation be able to kind of launch and manage a community or kind of launch and manage a community or kind of launch and manage a community or have you been more familiar where it's a have you been more familiar where it's a have you been more familiar where it's a small team and there's at least someone small team and there's at least someone small team and there's at least someone who can maybe be half dedicated who can maybe be half dedicated who can maybe be half dedicated to to helping you know nurture and to to helping you know nurture and to to helping you know nurture and encourage and moderate that community encourage and moderate that community encourage and moderate that community off the top of my head i don't know um i off the top of my head i don't know um i off the top of my head i don't know um i would think so would think so would think so um i would like to think so um um i would like to think so um um i would like to think so um but i've definitely seen like a lot of but i've definitely seen like a lot of but i've definitely seen like a lot of communities fail like that as well um communities fail like that as well um communities fail like that as well um yeah so yeah so yeah so you know i think that's the challenge is you know i think that's the challenge is you know i think that's the challenge is like how when do you start and you know like how when do you start and you know like how when do you start and you know like how do you start and what tool do like how do you start and what tool do like how do you start and what tool do you use and you use and you use and how how do you make it as as least how how do you make it as as least how how do you make it as as least frictional as possible or how do you frictional as possible or how do you frictional as possible or how do you make it so that there's make it so that there's make it so that there's like motivation for people to to show up like motivation for people to to show up like motivation for people to to show up and that's like i think the biggest

and that's like i think the biggest and that's like i think the biggest challenge for any any kind of community challenge for any any kind of community challenge for any any kind of community and i think most people probably start and i think most people probably start and i think most people probably start it too soon it too soon it too soon and you probably want to start thinking and you probably want to start thinking and you probably want to start thinking about about about community when people are emailing you community when people are emailing you community when people are emailing you too much and you can't you can't handle too much and you can't you can't handle too much and you can't you can't handle all the emails and all the emails and all the emails and at a point like that that's probably at a point like that that's probably at a point like that that's probably when you want to start um when you want to start um when you want to start um thinking about you know building a thinking about you know building a thinking about you know building a community around the product community around the product community around the product because then it will be easier to kind because then it will be easier to kind because then it will be easier to kind of have that initial of have that initial of have that initial traction and and not have the deadness traction and and not have the deadness traction and and not have the deadness of it all yeah yeah once you have a of it all yeah yeah once you have a of it all yeah yeah once you have a little bit of critical mass because a little bit of critical mass because a little bit of critical mass because a community with five people interacting community with five people interacting community with five people interacting this this this just looks like it's completely dead we just looks like it's completely dead we just looks like it's completely dead we have a couple questions coming in from have a couple questions coming in from have a couple questions coming in from audience members pablo audience members pablo audience members pablo asks i want to build a community but i asks i want to build a community but i asks i want to build a community but i feel there are already so many feel there are already so many feel there are already so many communities communities communities out there targeting the same audience it out there targeting the same audience it out there targeting the same audience it feels saturated feels saturated feels saturated do you have any thoughts on that do you have any thoughts on that do you have any thoughts on that yeah it's definitely a problem at the yeah it's definitely a problem at the yeah it's definitely a problem at the moment um since covid like moment um since covid like moment um since covid like communities has just like exploded as communities has just like exploded as communities has just like exploded as you know communities that exist and you know communities that exist and you know communities that exist and community software is just like community software is just like community software is just like it's just crazy um i remember just like it's just crazy um i remember just like it's just crazy um i remember just like looking back looking back looking back a couple of years ago when i started at a couple of years ago when i started at a couple of years ago when i started at indie hackers it was a completely indie hackers it was a completely indie hackers it was a completely different different different different world then sure um different world then sure um different world then sure um so you know there's i think there's a so you know there's i think there's a so you know there's i think there's a lot of people lot of people lot of people jumping on the bandwagon of communities jumping on the bandwagon of communities jumping on the bandwagon of communities um um um and these days i kind of look at it as and these days i kind of look at it as and these days i kind of look at it as um just like you wouldn't build a sas um just like you wouldn't build a sas um just like you wouldn't build a sas product product product because you want to um you shouldn't because you want to um you shouldn't because you want to um you shouldn't build a community because you want to

build a community because you want to build a community because you want to you should do like the research you you should do like the research you you should do like the research you should you know go out there should you know go out there should you know go out there have conversations with people and kind have conversations with people and kind have conversations with people and kind of validate whether there's an actual of validate whether there's an actual of validate whether there's an actual need need need for a community and that process doesn't for a community and that process doesn't for a community and that process doesn't necessarily necessarily necessarily happen overnight it takes time to to happen overnight it takes time to to happen overnight it takes time to to research it takes time to kind of research it takes time to kind of research it takes time to kind of build trust in relationships and but the build trust in relationships and but the build trust in relationships and but the more you do that the more answers more you do that the more answers more you do that the more answers and information you get to validate and and information you get to validate and and information you get to validate and give you confidence on whether or not give you confidence on whether or not give you confidence on whether or not it's it's it's the right decision um but i would also the right decision um but i would also the right decision um but i would also add that you know you can add that you know you can add that you know you can create really small communities as well create really small communities as well create really small communities as well and i think that there's so much power and i think that there's so much power and i think that there's so much power in small communities in small communities in small communities um that people don't really give enough um that people don't really give enough um that people don't really give enough credit for credit for credit for um yeah that's i was going to chime in um yeah that's i was going to chime in um yeah that's i was going to chime in with that of like the thought of niching with that of like the thought of niching with that of like the thought of niching down down down niching or niching down a little bit niching or niching down a little bit niching or niching down a little bit certainly every niche possible is not certainly every niche possible is not certainly every niche possible is not saturated and saturated and saturated and if i were to say i'm going to start a if i were to say i'm going to start a if i were to say i'm going to start a community for aspiring entrepreneurs community for aspiring entrepreneurs community for aspiring entrepreneurs it's like good god that's massive and it's like good god that's massive and it's like good god that's massive and there's already a bazillion of them but there's already a bazillion of them but there's already a bazillion of them but how do you say maybe aspiring how do you say maybe aspiring how do you say maybe aspiring entrepreneurs who want to put their entrepreneurs who want to put their entrepreneurs who want to put their stuff on stuff on stuff on etsy or aspiring entrepreneurs who are etsy or aspiring entrepreneurs who are etsy or aspiring entrepreneurs who are into into into specifically using you know knitting specifically using you know knitting specifically using you know knitting crocheting yarn type stuff crocheting yarn type stuff crocheting yarn type stuff um you can tell i'm a real expert in um you can tell i'm a real expert in um you can tell i'm a real expert in that topic but who want to do that and that topic but who want to do that and that topic but who want to do that and put it on you know etsy ebay amazon or put it on you know etsy ebay amazon or put it on you know etsy ebay amazon or whatever like there's there's ways to whatever like there's there's ways to whatever like there's there's ways to think about that and and targeting let's think about that and and targeting let's think about that and and targeting let's say sas founders say sas founders say sas founders is probably too broad these days because is probably too broad these days because is probably too broad these days because it's you know there's microconf there's it's you know there's microconf there's it's you know there's microconf there's uh saster uh saster uh saster there's who you know whoever else is there's who you know whoever else is there's who you know whoever else is doing it i think there's you know doing it i think there's you know doing it i think there's you know you may have to start with a niche angle you may have to start with a niche angle you may have to start with a niche angle you know to to piggyback on your point

you know to to piggyback on your point you know to to piggyback on your point of of of even a small community a vibrant even a small community a vibrant even a small community a vibrant community of community of community of 100 people who are participating um you 100 people who are participating um you 100 people who are participating um you know can still work know can still work know can still work yeah and i've actually done that yeah and i've actually done that yeah and i've actually done that recently with indie woman recently with indie woman recently with indie woman um so i um so i um so i kind of i guess like a side project kind of i guess like a side project kind of i guess like a side project thing but i also did it kind of thing but i also did it kind of thing but i also did it kind of for the benefit of indie hackers and for the benefit of indie hackers and for the benefit of indie hackers and and i felt there was a need and i saw and i felt there was a need and i saw and i felt there was a need and i saw like over the time that i was at uh like over the time that i was at uh like over the time that i was at uh indie hackers that like that there indie hackers that like that there indie hackers that like that there should be a space should be a space should be a space separate for for indie women and so separate for for indie women and so separate for for indie women and so after like a bit of nagging and people after like a bit of nagging and people after like a bit of nagging and people like kind of requesting it and hosting a like kind of requesting it and hosting a like kind of requesting it and hosting a few kind of small scale events few kind of small scale events few kind of small scale events we ended up creating a community around we ended up creating a community around we ended up creating a community around that and it's that and it's that and it's you know it's small it's like 150 people you know it's small it's like 150 people you know it's small it's like 150 people um but we meet up like every couple um but we meet up like every couple um but we meet up like every couple weeks for accountability sessions weeks for accountability sessions weeks for accountability sessions and we have a slack we have an email and we have a slack we have an email and we have a slack we have an email list list list that's on indie hackers and that's on indie hackers and that's on indie hackers and and it's great you know i've you know and it's great you know i've you know and it's great you know i've you know probably made probably made probably made better friendships from that in the past better friendships from that in the past better friendships from that in the past four months and i have actually on indie four months and i have actually on indie four months and i have actually on indie hackers so hackers so hackers so you know it's um there's different you know it's um there's different you know it's um there's different definite value there and i think definite value there and i think definite value there and i think um something like that that's been going um something like that that's been going um something like that that's been going about six months about six months about six months if you just like keep at it it can grow if you just like keep at it it can grow if you just like keep at it it can grow and it can turn into and it can turn into and it can turn into into other things yeah and that's i into other things yeah and that's i into other things yeah and that's i would would would add to um the answer to pablo's question add to um the answer to pablo's question add to um the answer to pablo's question you know of of niching down and and you know of of niching down and and you know of of niching down and and targeting same targeting same targeting same uh the same group of people the other

uh the same group of people the other uh the same group of people the other thing i would say is thing i would say is thing i would say is build an audience first then a community build an audience first then a community build an audience first then a community right audience and community are not the right audience and community are not the right audience and community are not the same thing because if you same thing because if you same thing because if you example i'll give you an example of how example i'll give you an example of how example i'll give you an example of how there's a different if i start a podcast there's a different if i start a podcast there's a different if i start a podcast or if i start a blog or if i start a blog or if i start a blog and i have 10 000 readers or 10 000 and i have 10 000 readers or 10 000 and i have 10 000 readers or 10 000 listeners but listeners but listeners but none of them talk to or know each other none of them talk to or know each other none of them talk to or know each other it's not a community it's an audience it's not a community it's an audience it's not a community it's an audience right and that is exactly how microcomp right and that is exactly how microcomp right and that is exactly how microcomp started and that is how started and that is how started and that is how you know uh frankly microconf connect you know uh frankly microconf connect you know uh frankly microconf connect started like started like started like i built an audience first by writing i built an audience first by writing i built an audience first by writing essays and then writing a book essays and then writing a book essays and then writing a book and then doing a podcast none of those and then doing a podcast none of those and then doing a podcast none of those people really interacted people really interacted people really interacted until that moment of hey let's all get until that moment of hey let's all get until that moment of hey let's all get together online together online together online you know in the what was the predecessor you know in the what was the predecessor you know in the what was the predecessor essentially to microcom connect and essentially to microcom connect and essentially to microcom connect and and let's get together in person in in and let's get together in person in in and let's get together in person in in at the first in person event at the first in person event at the first in person event without the audience the community would without the audience the community would without the audience the community would never have had the um never have had the um never have had the um what do you call it it's like the what do you call it it's like the what do you call it it's like the critical mass it's just you know we critical mass it's just you know we critical mass it's just you know we would have sold five tickets to an event would have sold five tickets to an event would have sold five tickets to an event you know or we would have had 20 people you know or we would have had 20 people you know or we would have had 20 people in in some dead forums you know to your in in some dead forums you know to your in in some dead forums you know to your point point point there's another question it's about the there's another question it's about the there's another question it's about the decision to use decision to use decision to use discord what went into the decision of discord what went into the decision of discord what went into the decision of using discord pros using discord pros using discord pros and cons i'm actually really curious to and cons i'm actually really curious to and cons i'm actually really curious to hear this because hear this because hear this because i don't use discord and my my son does i don't use discord and my my son does i don't use discord and my my son does he's 14.

at different learning stages different at different learning stages different knowledge stages yeah it's tough it's definitely one of yeah it's tough it's definitely one of the challenges we had in the hackers the challenges we had in the hackers the challenges we had in the hackers it's like people come in and they would it's like people come in and they would it's like people come in and they would hang around for a while and then once hang around for a while and then once hang around for a while and then once they they they kind of felt confident enough it was kind of felt confident enough it was kind of felt confident enough it was really hard to like keep them engaged really hard to like keep them engaged really hard to like keep them engaged and keep them coming back and keep them coming back and keep them coming back um i used to like to think of the um i used to like to think of the um i used to like to think of the podcast as something that would keep podcast as something that would keep podcast as something that would keep keep the more experienced people coming keep the more experienced people coming keep the more experienced people coming back and back and back and and i think that's probably what it's and i think that's probably what it's and i think that's probably what it's more about it's like when people first more about it's like when people first more about it's like when people first join join join they're new they're excited they're keen they're new they're excited they're keen they're new they're excited they're keen to learn to learn to learn but then as people kind of rise up in but then as people kind of rise up in but then as people kind of rise up in the community become more experienced the community become more experienced the community become more experienced you have to create different experiences you have to create different experiences you have to create different experiences for them for them for them and cater to to what they need and cater to to what they need and cater to to what they need so it could be like speaking gigs or so it could be like speaking gigs or so it could be like speaking gigs or podcast invites or podcast invites or podcast invites or uh creating something together um uh creating something together um uh creating something together um and and that's tough i think as a and and that's tough i think as a and and that's tough i think as a community because that's like community because that's like community because that's like that takes a lot of effort it's you know that takes a lot of effort it's you know that takes a lot of effort it's you know it's more effort than it's more effort than it's more effort than in my opinion running a forum it becomes in my opinion running a forum it becomes in my opinion running a forum it becomes a lot of a lot of a lot of content production and and that's not content production and and that's not content production and and that's not not easy not easy not easy to keep that you know that that flywheel to keep that you know that that flywheel to keep that you know that that flywheel flowing flowing flowing right yeah that's i don't usually think right yeah that's i don't usually think right yeah that's i don't usually think i mean i think i mean i think i mean i think one of the things people when they when one of the things people when they when one of the things people when they when they evaluate communities or think about they evaluate communities or think about they evaluate communities or think about starting a community it's starting a community it's starting a community it's i don't think it's on the radar of like i don't think it's on the radar of like i don't think it's on the radar of like i'm gonna start a community and i'm i'm gonna start a community and i'm i'm gonna start a community and i'm gonna moderate it nurture it and i'm gonna moderate it nurture it and i'm gonna moderate it nurture it and i'm gonna create a bunch of content like gonna create a bunch of content like gonna create a bunch of content like those two things those two things those two things are kind of separate you know separate are kind of separate you know separate are kind of separate you know separate in most people's minds but in most people's minds but in most people's minds but um i can imagine that at scale

um i can imagine that at scale um i can imagine that at scale that becomes you know becomes more of an that becomes you know becomes more of an that becomes you know becomes more of an issue probably issue probably issue probably um yeah what types as we wrap up because i yeah what types as we wrap up because i think we have think we have think we have yeah we just have one or two minutes yeah we just have one or two minutes yeah we just have one or two minutes left is there you know left is there you know left is there you know when you as you're building up this when you as you're building up this when you as you're building up this orbit community orbit community orbit community what's your mental model of how do i what's your mental model of how do i what's your mental model of how do i engage people and get them to engage engage people and get them to engage engage people and get them to engage because that's often because that's often because that's often even if i had 50 people in a community even if i had 50 people in a community even if i had 50 people in a community or 100 people if they're not engaging or 100 people if they're not engaging or 100 people if they're not engaging then that's a problem right so how then that's a problem right so how then that's a problem right so how can you encourage people on a regular can you encourage people on a regular can you encourage people on a regular basis to participate basis to participate basis to participate and give back such you're not as the and give back such you're not as the and give back such you're not as the moderator the only person who's moderator the only person who's moderator the only person who's answering all the questions right the answering all the questions right the answering all the questions right the only person who's only person who's only person who's who's getting people to engage who's getting people to engage who's getting people to engage yeah um bearing in mind that i've only yeah um bearing in mind that i've only yeah um bearing in mind that i've only been there three days um been there three days um been there three days um but the the general loo's plan is but the the general loo's plan is but the the general loo's plan is to follow the lead of of what the to follow the lead of of what the to follow the lead of of what the uh founders want so i'm very much taking uh founders want so i'm very much taking uh founders want so i'm very much taking a lead a lead a lead in things that they want to do at the in things that they want to do at the in things that they want to do at the moment um but alongside that it's kind moment um but alongside that it's kind moment um but alongside that it's kind of of of what i call is like studying your people what i call is like studying your people what i call is like studying your people it's like it's like it's like you want to you don't want to jump in you want to you don't want to jump in you want to you don't want to jump in straight away thinking you know what straight away thinking you know what straight away thinking you know what you're doing you're doing you're doing and you want to like start dipping your and you want to like start dipping your and you want to like start dipping your toes in kind of figuring out what what toes in kind of figuring out what what toes in kind of figuring out what what they're talking about and they're talking about and they're talking about and and then hopefully creating like and then hopefully creating like and then hopefully creating like experiences or content or conversations experiences or content or conversations experiences or content or conversations that really that really that really kind of relate to them um so at the kind of relate to them um so at the kind of relate to them um so at the moment moment moment i'm very cautious about kind of jumping i'm very cautious about kind of jumping i'm very cautious about kind of jumping in too quickly
