  1. How long does it take someone to spot a How long does it take someone to spot a psychopath? psychopath? psychopath? >> About 5 seconds. So, most people think a >> About 5 seconds. So, most people think a >> About 5 seconds. So, most people think a psychopath looks dangerous. [music] They psychopath looks dangerous. [music] They psychopath looks dangerous. [music] They picture the villain in a movie, but picture the villain in a movie, but picture the villain in a movie, but that's not how it works in real life. that's not how it works in real life. that's not how it works in real life. We've done some research in my lab and We've done some research in my lab and We've done some research in my lab and we found there are certainly some things we found there are certainly some things we found there are certainly some things that you can look for. that you can look for. that you can look for. >> Have they ever done that with lying >> Have they ever done that with lying >> Have they ever done that with lying [music] to figure out if people can spot [music] to figure out if people can spot [music] to figure out if people can spot liars liars liars >> thousands of times? If you ask people >> thousands of times? If you ask people >> thousands of times? If you ask people what's the number one cue that someone what's the number one cue that someone what's the number one cue that someone is lying to you, they will say they is lying to you, they will say they is lying to you, they will say they can't look you in the eye. But there's can't look you in the eye. But there's can't look you in the eye. But there's no research to suggest that that is no research to suggest that that is no research to suggest that that is true. However, there's an essential tool true. However, there's an essential tool true. However, there's an essential tool for detecting lies which is for detecting lies which is for detecting lies which is >> oh >> oh >> oh >> I know as I study dark personality >> I know as I study dark personality >> I know as I study dark personality [music] [music] [music] traits and I found that there's four traits and I found that there's four traits and I found that there's four different elements which are different elements which are different elements which are psychopathy, machavelianism, narcissism psychopathy, machavelianism, narcissism psychopathy, machavelianism, narcissism and sadism. And what we found is that and sadism. And what we found is that and sadism. And what we found is that people with higher levels of these people with higher levels of these people with higher levels of these traits engaged in duchen smiles which is traits engaged in duchen smiles which is traits engaged in duchen smiles which is the activation around the eyes and they the activation around the eyes and they the activation around the eyes and they also used a lot of hand gestures. also used a lot of hand gestures. also used a lot of hand gestures. >> Where does this come from? Well, >> Where does this come from? Well, >> Where does this come from? Well, research suggests that abuse, cold, research suggests that abuse, cold, research suggests that abuse, cold, uncaring parenting style, but also uncaring parenting style, but also uncaring parenting style, but also overvaluation of a child early in life overvaluation of a child early in life overvaluation of a child early in life may lead to more narcissistic views may lead to more narcissistic views may lead to more narcissistic views later.

  2. later. later. >> Is there any other fascinating questions >> Is there any other fascinating questions >> Is there any other fascinating questions you've pursued in your lab? you've pursued in your lab? you've pursued in your lab? >> Yes, we studied the extent to which >> Yes, we studied the extent to which >> Yes, we studied the extent to which [music] psychopathic personality traits [music] psychopathic personality traits [music] psychopathic personality traits could increase the amount of influence could increase the amount of influence could increase the amount of influence you have in government. [music] And you have in government. [music] And you have in government. [music] And also, there are three common mistakes also, there are three common mistakes also, there are three common mistakes people make when dealing with dark people make when dealing with dark people make when dealing with dark personalities. We'll get into this more personalities. We'll get into this more personalities. We'll get into this more later. And I'm wondering if you can spot later. And I'm wondering if you can spot later. And I'm wondering if you can spot any of these dark personality traits any of these dark personality traits any of these dark personality traits just by looking at dating profiles. just by looking at dating profiles. just by looking at dating profiles. >> All right. So, this is Ryan. This feels >> All right. So, this is Ryan. This feels >> All right. So, this is Ryan. This feels like a red flag. And then there's Haley. like a red flag. And then there's Haley. like a red flag. And then there's Haley. That would be associated with That would be associated with That would be associated with psychopathy. Okay. David is a brain psychopathy. Okay. David is a brain psychopathy. Okay. David is a brain surgeon. Very impressive. [music] But surgeon. Very impressive. [music] But surgeon. Very impressive. [music] But I'm seeing narcissism. I'm seeing narcissism. I'm seeing narcissism. >> So, I guess this begs the question that >> So, I guess this begs the question that >> So, I guess this begs the question that if someone has those traits you've if someone has those traits you've if someone has those traits you've described, can they be cured? described, can they be cured? described, can they be cured? >> So, in my lab, what we found is that This is super interesting to me. My team This is super interesting to me. My team gave me this report to show me how many gave me this report to show me how many gave me this report to show me how many of you that watch the show subscribe. of you that watch the show subscribe. of you that watch the show subscribe. And some of you have told us according And some of you have told us according And some of you have told us according to this that you are unsubscribed from to this that you are unsubscribed from to this that you are unsubscribed from the channel randomly. So favor to ask the channel randomly. So favor to ask the channel randomly. So favor to ask all of you. Please could you check right all of you. Please could you check right all of you. Please could you check right now if you've hit the subscribe button. now if you've hit the subscribe button. now if you've hit the subscribe button. If you are a regular view of the show If you are a regular view of the show If you are a regular view of the show and you like what we do here, we're and you like what we do here, we're and you like what we do here, we're approaching quite a significant landmark approaching quite a significant landmark approaching quite a significant landmark on this show in terms of a subscriber on this show in terms of a subscriber on this show in terms of a subscriber number. So, if there was one simple free number. So, if there was one simple free number. So, if there was one simple free thing that you could do to help us, my thing that you could do to help us, my thing that you could do to help us, my team, everyone here, to keep this show team, everyone here, to keep this show team, everyone here, to keep this show free, to keep it improving year over free, to keep it improving year over free, to keep it improving year over year and week over week, it is just to year and week over week, it is just to year and week over week, it is just to hit that subscribe button and to double hit that subscribe button and to double hit that subscribe button and to double check if you've hit it. Only thing I'll check if you've hit it. Only thing I'll check if you've hit it. Only thing I'll ever ask of you. Do we have a deal? If ever ask of you. Do we have a deal? If ever ask of you. Do we have a deal? If you do it, I'll tell you what I'll do.

  3. you do it, I'll tell you what I'll do. you do it, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll make sure every single week, every I'll make sure every single week, every I'll make sure every single week, every single month, we fight harder and harder single month, we fight harder and harder single month, we fight harder and harder and harder and harder to bring you the and harder and harder to bring you the and harder and harder to bring you the guests and conversations that you want guests and conversations that you want guests and conversations that you want to hear. I've stayed true to that to hear. I've stayed true to that to hear. I've stayed true to that promise since the very beginning of the promise since the very beginning of the promise since the very beginning of the D of Sio, and I will not let you down. D of Sio, and I will not let you down. D of Sio, and I will not let you down. Please help us. Really appreciate it. Please help us. Really appreciate it. Please help us. Really appreciate it. Let's get on with the show. [music] Professor Leanne Tenbrink, Professor Leanne Tenbrink, at the very heart of your motivations, at the very heart of your motivations, at the very heart of your motivations, why is it you do what you do? I want to why is it you do what you do? I want to why is it you do what you do? I want to make people less cynical about human make people less cynical about human make people less cynical about human nature, which I think might seem kind of nature, which I think might seem kind of nature, which I think might seem kind of paradoxical given what I study because I paradoxical given what I study because I paradoxical given what I study because I study deception and dominance and study deception and dominance and study deception and dominance and so-called dark personality traits. But I so-called dark personality traits. But I so-called dark personality traits. But I think when you understand those topics think when you understand those topics think when you understand those topics and also that there's something you can and also that there's something you can and also that there's something you can do about it to like make these do about it to like make these do about it to like make these interactions better, it's incredibly interactions better, it's incredibly interactions better, it's incredibly powerful and can give us a more accurate powerful and can give us a more accurate powerful and can give us a more accurate view of the world. view of the world. view of the world. >> And why are the population at large so >> And why are the population at large so >> And why are the population at large so interested in this these subjects? Cuz interested in this these subjects? Cuz interested in this these subjects? Cuz they are they're fascinated by it. But they are they're fascinated by it. But they are they're fascinated by it. But what is underneath all of the sort of what is underneath all of the sort of what is underneath all of the sort of fascination and the curiosity? What is fascination and the curiosity? What is fascination and the curiosity? What is what are they trying to figure out when what are they trying to figure out when what are they trying to figure out when people are interested in psychop people are interested in psychop people are interested in psychop psychopathy?

  4. psychopathy? psychopathy? >> Mhm. You know, I think one of the >> Mhm. You know, I think one of the >> Mhm. You know, I think one of the reasons why we are so interested in reasons why we are so interested in reasons why we are so interested in psychopathy is because it's quite psychopathy is because it's quite psychopathy is because it's quite foreign to us. So, most of us move foreign to us. So, most of us move foreign to us. So, most of us move through life caring about other people, through life caring about other people, through life caring about other people, having compassion for other people, having compassion for other people, having compassion for other people, telling a few lies here and there, but telling a few lies here and there, but telling a few lies here and there, but by and large being very truthful and by and large being very truthful and by and large being very truthful and honest and kind of playing by the rules. honest and kind of playing by the rules. honest and kind of playing by the rules. And that's like the opposite of And that's like the opposite of And that's like the opposite of psychopathy. And so I think when you are psychopathy. And so I think when you are psychopathy. And so I think when you are faced with this personality that is faced with this personality that is faced with this personality that is quite the opposite of your whole quite the opposite of your whole quite the opposite of your whole experience of being alive, you're like experience of being alive, you're like experience of being alive, you're like what's going on? And I want to what's going on? And I want to what's going on? And I want to understand that. I think there's also an understand that. I think there's also an understand that. I think there's also an element uh there actually is some element uh there actually is some element uh there actually is some research on like true crime specifically research on like true crime specifically research on like true crime specifically and why people are interested in true and why people are interested in true and why people are interested in true crime. It tends to be a largely uh crime. It tends to be a largely uh crime. It tends to be a largely uh female audience and some of the female audience and some of the female audience and some of the motivations that people report is like motivations that people report is like motivations that people report is like wanting to understand and wanting to wanting to understand and wanting to wanting to understand and wanting to avoid you know becoming victim of these avoid you know becoming victim of these avoid you know becoming victim of these people. people. people. >> Is it possible to spot someone who is a >> Is it possible to spot someone who is a >> Is it possible to spot someone who is a psychopath? psychopath? psychopath? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> How long according to the research does >> How long according to the research does >> How long according to the research does it take someone to spot a psychopath?

  5. it take someone to spot a psychopath? it take someone to spot a psychopath? >> Okay. You can get a kernel of truth >> Okay. You can get a kernel of truth >> Okay. You can get a kernel of truth about someone's personality, the extent about someone's personality, the extent about someone's personality, the extent to which they're psychopathic in about 5 to which they're psychopathic in about 5 to which they're psychopathic in about 5 seconds. seconds. seconds. >> Yeah. Explain the research to me. >> Yeah. Explain the research to me. >> Yeah. Explain the research to me. >> Okay. So, this is research by Scott >> Okay. So, this is research by Scott >> Okay. So, this is research by Scott Lillenfeld and his colleagues. And Lillenfeld and his colleagues. And Lillenfeld and his colleagues. And basically what they did is they showed basically what they did is they showed basically what they did is they showed people people people 5-second, 10-second, and 20 second clips 5-second, 10-second, and 20 second clips 5-second, 10-second, and 20 second clips of these interviews where criminal of these interviews where criminal of these interviews where criminal offenders were being interviewed by a offenders were being interviewed by a offenders were being interviewed by a psychologist and rated on their psychologist and rated on their psychologist and rated on their psychopathic personality traits. And psychopathic personality traits. And psychopathic personality traits. And then you had random psychology student then you had random psychology student then you had random psychology student volunteer for research watching 5 volunteer for research watching 5 volunteer for research watching 5 seconds of that interaction and making a seconds of that interaction and making a seconds of that interaction and making a rating of like you know how callous do rating of like you know how callous do rating of like you know how callous do they seem, how manipulative do they they seem, how manipulative do they they seem, how manipulative do they seem? And they found that there is seem? And they found that there is seem? And they found that there is actually a pretty reasonable correlation actually a pretty reasonable correlation actually a pretty reasonable correlation between the ratings of these like you between the ratings of these like you between the ratings of these like you know naive folks who watch 5 seconds and know naive folks who watch 5 seconds and know naive folks who watch 5 seconds and the trained clinical psychologists who the trained clinical psychologists who the trained clinical psychologists who did hours long interviews and gathered did hours long interviews and gathered did hours long interviews and gathered collateral information. And so we collateral information. And so we collateral information. And so we partnered with Scott and we uh got these partnered with Scott and we uh got these partnered with Scott and we uh got these videos and we coded the like verbal and videos and we coded the like verbal and videos and we coded the like verbal and non-verbal behavior like are these non-verbal behavior like are these non-verbal behavior like are these people behaving differently is and what people behaving differently is and what people behaving differently is and what are people paying attention to? And what are people paying attention to? And what are people paying attention to? And what we found is that people with higher we found is that people with higher we found is that people with higher levels of these traits engaged in these levels of these traits engaged in these levels of these traits engaged in these uh what we call duchen smiles. They're uh what we call duchen smiles. They're uh what we call duchen smiles. They're um a genuine looking smile but they um a genuine looking smile but they um a genuine looking smile but they Yeah, that's the one. Okay. So what Yeah, that's the one. Okay. So what Yeah, that's the one. Okay. So what distinguishes these two kinds of smiles

  6. distinguishes these two kinds of smiles distinguishes these two kinds of smiles is the activation around the eyes and is the activation around the eyes and is the activation around the eyes and it's the creation of like crows feet. So it's the creation of like crows feet. So it's the creation of like crows feet. So you kind of get you know lines in the you kind of get you know lines in the you kind of get you know lines in the corner. corner. corner. >> So a genuine person will have crows feet >> So a genuine person will have crows feet >> So a genuine person will have crows feet when they smile. Theoretically when they smile. Theoretically when they smile. Theoretically >> theoretically >> theoretically >> theoretically >> again they can botox and all kinds of >> again they can botox and all kinds of >> again they can botox and all kinds of things getting in the way of this but things getting in the way of this but things getting in the way of this but >> yeah. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> Okay. So it's in the eyes. >> Okay. So it's in the eyes. >> Okay. So it's in the eyes. >> Yes. It's totally in the eyes. Whereas a >> Yes. It's totally in the eyes. Whereas a >> Yes. It's totally in the eyes. Whereas a nondouch smile, you know, you have the nondouch smile, you know, you have the nondouch smile, you know, you have the same kind of upturned lips and maybe same kind of upturned lips and maybe same kind of upturned lips and maybe you're showing your teeth, you get a big you're showing your teeth, you get a big you're showing your teeth, you get a big grin, but no activation around the eyes. grin, but no activation around the eyes. grin, but no activation around the eyes. So, you don't get those crows feet. So, you don't get those crows feet. So, you don't get those crows feet. People who were high in these People who were high in these People who were high in these psychopathic personality traits, they psychopathic personality traits, they psychopathic personality traits, they were showing these kinds of like, you were showing these kinds of like, you were showing these kinds of like, you know, very happy looking smiles as they know, very happy looking smiles as they know, very happy looking smiles as they were saying really hostile things. So, were saying really hostile things. So, were saying really hostile things. So, they were using like happy expressions, they were using like happy expressions, they were using like happy expressions, hostile language at the same time. So hostile language at the same time. So hostile language at the same time. So you get this kind of like weird you get this kind of like weird you get this kind of like weird emotional presentation. Um they also emotional presentation. Um they also emotional presentation. Um they also used a lot of hand gestures. We called used a lot of hand gestures. We called used a lot of hand gestures. We called them illustrators. Those seem to be them illustrators. Those seem to be them illustrators. Those seem to be things that just, you know, random things that just, you know, random things that just, you know, random observers paid attention to and used to observers paid attention to and used to observers paid attention to and used to help guide their judgments, which of help guide their judgments, which of help guide their judgments, which of course is like such little information course is like such little information course is like such little information to go on, but it does suggest that, you to go on, but it does suggest that, you to go on, but it does suggest that, you know, you can get a sense of someone know, you can get a sense of someone know, you can get a sense of someone relatively quickly. But again, relatively quickly. But again, relatively quickly. But again, personality is something that exists personality is something that exists personality is something that exists across time and context. So, you're across time and context. So, you're across time and context. So, you're going to get better data the more data going to get better data the more data going to get better data the more data that you have across those different that you have across those different that you have across those different times and places.

  7. times and places. times and places. >> I've got two more facial expressions >> I've got two more facial expressions >> I've got two more facial expressions here. here. here. >> Mhm. So, this is sadness. So, some of >> Mhm. So, this is sadness. So, some of >> Mhm. So, this is sadness. So, some of the research that I have done has the research that I have done has the research that I have done has actually looked at people who've gone on actually looked at people who've gone on actually looked at people who've gone on TV and asked for help trying to find TV and asked for help trying to find TV and asked for help trying to find their missing loved one. And in some their missing loved one. And in some their missing loved one. And in some proportion of those cases, they were proportion of those cases, they were proportion of those cases, they were actually guilty of killing that person. actually guilty of killing that person. actually guilty of killing that person. [gasps] [gasps] [gasps] So they are like falsely pleading for So they are like falsely pleading for So they are like falsely pleading for help for someone they know is never help for someone they know is never help for someone they know is never coming back. And coming back. And coming back. And >> isn't this your wasn't this your PhD? >> isn't this your wasn't this your PhD? >> isn't this your wasn't this your PhD? >> This is my PhD. Yeah. >> This is my PhD. Yeah. >> This is my PhD. Yeah. >> What what was your PhD in >> What what was your PhD in >> What what was your PhD in >> in psychology? Uh but I was in a more >> in psychology? Uh but I was in a more >> in psychology? Uh but I was in a more like forensic context at that time. So I like forensic context at that time. So I like forensic context at that time. So I was uh studying behavioral cues to was uh studying behavioral cues to was uh studying behavioral cues to emotional highstakes deception. emotional highstakes deception. emotional highstakes deception. >> I trying to spot someone who was say in >> I trying to spot someone who was say in >> I trying to spot someone who was say in the media saying I can't find my wife the media saying I can't find my wife the media saying I can't find my wife please help me. a thousand%. please help me. a thousand%. please help me. a thousand%. >> But they had killed their own wife. >> But they had killed their own wife. >> But they had killed their own wife. >> Yes. Yeah. So I was comparing a bunch of >> Yes. Yeah. So I was comparing a bunch of >> Yes. Yeah. So I was comparing a bunch of those cases to a bunch of cases where those cases to a bunch of cases where those cases to a bunch of cases where people genuinely had no idea where their people genuinely had no idea where their people genuinely had no idea where their missing loved one had gone and they missing loved one had gone and they missing loved one had gone and they were, you know, desperately pleading to were, you know, desperately pleading to were, you know, desperately pleading to have them home. And this is one of the have them home. And this is one of the have them home. And this is one of the differences that we saw in that set of differences that we saw in that set of differences that we saw in that set of videos where like maybe you can try to videos where like maybe you can try to videos where like maybe you can try to do this with me, Stephen. Are you up for do this with me, Stephen. Are you up for do this with me, Stephen. Are you up for it?

  8. it? it? >> I'm up for it. [laughter] I'm always up >> I'm up for it. [laughter] I'm always up >> I'm up for it. [laughter] I'm always up for everything. for everything. for everything. >> Okay. So in genuine sadness you get the >> Okay. So in genuine sadness you get the >> Okay. So in genuine sadness you get the like downturn lip corners p. Okay. So like downturn lip corners p. Okay. So like downturn lip corners p. Okay. So you did that pretty easily. you did that pretty easily. you did that pretty easily. >> What tends to be more difficult is this >> What tends to be more difficult is this >> What tends to be more difficult is this combination in the eyebrows. So you're combination in the eyebrows. So you're combination in the eyebrows. So you're just your inner eyebrows comes upward just your inner eyebrows comes upward just your inner eyebrows comes upward and together. and together. and together. >> Oh, you're pretty good. Nicely done. >> Oh, you're pretty good. Nicely done. >> Oh, you're pretty good. Nicely done. >> It was [laughter] hard. >> It was [laughter] hard. >> It was [laughter] hard. >> So what we saw in the people who were >> So what we saw in the people who were >> So what we saw in the people who were lying was more like surprise. So, like lying was more like surprise. So, like lying was more like surprise. So, like they were able to kind of pull the lip they were able to kind of pull the lip they were able to kind of pull the lip corners down, but instead of like the corners down, but instead of like the corners down, but instead of like the inner eyebrows going upward and inner eyebrows going upward and inner eyebrows going upward and together, the whole inner and outer together, the whole inner and outer together, the whole inner and outer eyebrows would go up, but not together. eyebrows would go up, but not together. eyebrows would go up, but not together. So, it's kind of like, So, it's kind of like, So, it's kind of like, >> and you could predictably tell from >> and you could predictably tell from >> and you could predictably tell from footage if someone had done it or not. footage if someone had done it or not. footage if someone had done it or not. Like, was there correlation? Like, was there correlation? Like, was there correlation? >> Yeah. So, we were able to use four >> Yeah. So, we were able to use four >> Yeah. So, we were able to use four different cues. So too verbal and too different cues. So too verbal and too different cues. So too verbal and too non-verbal to predict with about 90% non-verbal to predict with about 90% non-verbal to predict with about 90% accuracy who was lying and who was accuracy who was lying and who was accuracy who was lying and who was telling the truth. Caveat to that. We telling the truth. Caveat to that. We telling the truth. Caveat to that. We tried to replicate that more recently tried to replicate that more recently tried to replicate that more recently and we found much more modest effects.

  9. and we found much more modest effects. and we found much more modest effects. But we did find consistencies especially But we did find consistencies especially But we did find consistencies especially with the verbal stuff and and there it with the verbal stuff and and there it with the verbal stuff and and there it was the number of words that people used was the number of words that people used was the number of words that people used as well as tentative words. So liars as well as tentative words. So liars as well as tentative words. So liars would tend to say things like if you see would tend to say things like if you see would tend to say things like if you see this come home or call or whatever. It this come home or call or whatever. It this come home or call or whatever. It was kind of like a little vague about was kind of like a little vague about was kind of like a little vague about what this person should do if they saw what this person should do if they saw what this person should do if they saw it. Saying things like it wasn't like an it. Saying things like it wasn't like an it. Saying things like it wasn't like an argument per se that we were having. So argument per se that we were having. So argument per se that we were having. So they kind of left a lot of like gray they kind of left a lot of like gray they kind of left a lot of like gray area in the things that they were area in the things that they were area in the things that they were saying. Whereas the truthful people were saying. Whereas the truthful people were saying. Whereas the truthful people were like when you see this call me. like when you see this call me. like when you see this call me. >> They were more sort of high conviction >> They were more sort of high conviction >> They were more sort of high conviction and precise. and precise. and precise. >> Yes. Exactly. Yeah. H I think down there >> Yes. Exactly. Yeah. H I think down there >> Yes. Exactly. Yeah. H I think down there we have some cards that say uh three we have some cards that say uh three we have some cards that say uh three signs someone is lying. signs someone is lying. signs someone is lying. >> So one cue to deception is sparse or >> So one cue to deception is sparse or >> So one cue to deception is sparse or ambiguous information. So the most ambiguous information. So the most ambiguous information. So the most consistent effect we have that consistent effect we have that consistent effect we have that differentiates people who are telling differentiates people who are telling differentiates people who are telling the truth from people who are lying is the truth from people who are lying is the truth from people who are lying is the amount of detail that they give. So the amount of detail that they give. So the amount of detail that they give. So people who are lying tend to give fewer people who are lying tend to give fewer people who are lying tend to give fewer details.

  10. details. details. >> Interesting. I thought it was the >> Interesting. I thought it was the >> Interesting. I thought it was the opposite. opposite. opposite. Yeah, I hear this a lot [laughter] where Yeah, I hear this a lot [laughter] where Yeah, I hear this a lot [laughter] where people are like, "No, but liars will people are like, "No, but liars will people are like, "No, but liars will like, you know, natter on and on and like, you know, natter on and on and like, you know, natter on and on and on." That's not what we find in the on." That's not what we find in the on." That's not what we find in the research whatsoever. Especially research whatsoever. Especially research whatsoever. Especially especially when people don't have time especially when people don't have time especially when people don't have time to prepare. to prepare. to prepare. So, whenever people have time to So, whenever people have time to So, whenever people have time to prepare, they can start to look pretty prepare, they can start to look pretty prepare, they can start to look pretty much like a truth teller on the amount much like a truth teller on the amount much like a truth teller on the amount of information they have. But if you get of information they have. But if you get of information they have. But if you get someone on the spot, the truth teller someone on the spot, the truth teller someone on the spot, the truth teller just has to like say remember what just has to like say remember what just has to like say remember what happened and like spit it out and tell happened and like spit it out and tell happened and like spit it out and tell you, right? And you can even ask for you, right? And you can even ask for you, right? And you can even ask for more information like tell me more about more information like tell me more about more information like tell me more about that and they can come up with more that and they can come up with more that and they can come up with more information about that because they were information about that because they were information about that because they were there, right? The person who is lying there, right? The person who is lying there, right? The person who is lying has a much harder task. We call this has a much harder task. We call this has a much harder task. We call this they have increased cognitive load which they have increased cognitive load which they have increased cognitive load which means that like they need to come up means that like they need to come up means that like they need to come up with details on the spot. They need to with details on the spot. They need to with details on the spot. They need to not contradict themselves. They need to not contradict themselves. They need to not contradict themselves. They need to make sure they remember it for the next make sure they remember it for the next make sure they remember it for the next time they need to tell this lie. They time they need to tell this lie. They time they need to tell this lie. They also need to try to imagine like what do also need to try to imagine like what do also need to try to imagine like what do you know already you know already you know already >> and how do I not contradict or >> and how do I not contradict or >> and how do I not contradict or essentially step in it right whenever essentially step in it right whenever essentially step in it right whenever I'm trying to explain what actually I'm trying to explain what actually I'm trying to explain what actually didn't happen.

  11. didn't happen. didn't happen. >> They must have higher like blood >> They must have higher like blood >> They must have higher like blood pressure anyway just from knowing that pressure anyway just from knowing that pressure anyway just from knowing that they're not telling the truth. And that they're not telling the truth. And that they're not telling the truth. And that must make it your cortisol spike to know must make it your cortisol spike to know must make it your cortisol spike to know that you're like that you're like that you're like >> Yeah. We actually we've done some >> Yeah. We actually we've done some >> Yeah. We actually we've done some research in my lab uh to show that research in my lab uh to show that research in my lab uh to show that people who are lying tend to have an people who are lying tend to have an people who are lying tend to have an increased cortisol reactivity relative increased cortisol reactivity relative increased cortisol reactivity relative to people who are telling the truth. to people who are telling the truth. to people who are telling the truth. Yeah. You know, on this one, the reason Yeah. You know, on this one, the reason Yeah. You know, on this one, the reason why the reason why I was surprised to why the reason why I was surprised to why the reason why I was surprised to hear it is because when I I w I'm a big hear it is because when I I w I'm a big hear it is because when I I w I'm a big true crime fan, like obsessed, and uh I true crime fan, like obsessed, and uh I true crime fan, like obsessed, and uh I often watch the interrogation videos, often watch the interrogation videos, often watch the interrogation videos, >> and I I think I thought I heard before >> and I I think I thought I heard before >> and I I think I thought I heard before that when they're interviewing someone that when they're interviewing someone that when they're interviewing someone who is guilty, they will give lots of who is guilty, they will give lots of who is guilty, they will give lots of like irrelevant detail on other parts of like irrelevant detail on other parts of like irrelevant detail on other parts of it. it. it. >> I was watching the Jesse Small interview >> I was watching the Jesse Small interview >> I was watching the Jesse Small interview he did on TV. Again, he had time to he did on TV. Again, he had time to he did on TV. Again, he had time to prepare, so maybe that's the caveat. prepare, so maybe that's the caveat. prepare, so maybe that's the caveat. >> And he really described a bunch of >> And he really described a bunch of >> And he really described a bunch of pointless stuff. He like des he was like pointless stuff. He like des he was like pointless stuff. He like des he was like talking to the journalist. He was like, talking to the journalist. He was like, talking to the journalist. He was like, "Uh, you know," and then I landed and I "Uh, you know," and then I landed and I "Uh, you know," and then I landed and I called my manager who was in Australia called my manager who was in Australia called my manager who was in Australia because my manager is on tour with because my manager is on tour with because my manager is on tour with someone else and I someone else and I someone else and I >> and then even when he talked about going >> and then even when he talked about going >> and then even when he talked about going to Subway and getting the Subway rap, he to Subway and getting the Subway rap, he to Subway and getting the Subway rap, he he mentioned that it was like a tuna he mentioned that it was like a tuna he mentioned that it was like a tuna rap.

  12. rap. rap. >> So like the the details he was sure on >> So like the the details he was sure on >> So like the the details he was sure on and that were probably true, he seemed and that were probably true, he seemed and that were probably true, he seemed to really expand out to really expand out to really expand out >> and then when it gets into the other >> and then when it gets into the other >> and then when it gets into the other stuff, which is where the the bulk of stuff, which is where the the bulk of stuff, which is where the the bulk of the lies took place allegedly, it was the lies took place allegedly, it was the lies took place allegedly, it was quite vague. quite vague. quite vague. >> Yeah. Yeah. So we call that embedded >> Yeah. Yeah. So we call that embedded >> Yeah. Yeah. So we call that embedded lies, right? So like he's giving lots of lies, right? So like he's giving lots of lies, right? So like he's giving lots of detail where it's truthful. detail where it's truthful. detail where it's truthful. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And then almost no detail where it's a >> And then almost no detail where it's a >> And then almost no detail where it's a lie, right? And then lots of detail lie, right? And then lots of detail lie, right? And then lots of detail where it's truthful. So you can you can where it's truthful. So you can you can where it's truthful. So you can you can also kind of like compare someone's like also kind of like compare someone's like also kind of like compare someone's like baseline like do they do they tend to baseline like do they do they tend to baseline like do they do they tend to give lots of detail? Do they tend to be give lots of detail? Do they tend to be give lots of detail? Do they tend to be sparse on information? You can look for sparse on information? You can look for sparse on information? You can look for kind of deviations. And so if you notice kind of deviations. And so if you notice kind of deviations. And so if you notice that like someone tells you a really that like someone tells you a really that like someone tells you a really long story, there's tons of detail about long story, there's tons of detail about long story, there's tons of detail about all these other things and then in this all these other things and then in this all these other things and then in this part of the story there's like very part of the story there's like very part of the story there's like very little information, very sparse or little information, very sparse or little information, very sparse or ambiguous information, right? That can ambiguous information, right? That can ambiguous information, right? That can be a red flag. And I think what's be a red flag. And I think what's be a red flag. And I think what's >> important to remember is that there is >> important to remember is that there is >> important to remember is that there is no Pinocchio's nose. There's no like one no Pinocchio's nose. There's no like one no Pinocchio's nose. There's no like one cue. And so what you're looking for is cue. And so what you're looking for is cue. And so what you're looking for is just like these um subtle cues that are just like these um subtle cues that are just like these um subtle cues that are like red flags and encourage you to like red flags and encourage you to like red flags and encourage you to follow up, ask more questions, dig in to follow up, ask more questions, dig in to follow up, ask more questions, dig in to that topic a little bit further.

  13. that topic a little bit further. that topic a little bit further. >> You know, in the same way they did the >> You know, in the same way they did the >> You know, in the same way they did the research to figure out if members of the research to figure out if members of the research to figure out if members of the public could just on the surface tell if public could just on the surface tell if public could just on the surface tell if someone was a psychopath in 5, 10 or 20 someone was a psychopath in 5, 10 or 20 someone was a psychopath in 5, 10 or 20 seconds. seconds. seconds. >> Have they ever done that with lying to >> Have they ever done that with lying to >> Have they ever done that with lying to figure out if people can spot lies? figure out if people can spot lies? figure out if people can spot lies? >> Literally thousands of times. [laughter] >> Literally thousands of times. [laughter] >> Literally thousands of times. [laughter] >> Really? >> Really? >> Really? >> Yeah. So, in my lab, we've actually had >> Yeah. So, in my lab, we've actually had >> Yeah. So, in my lab, we've actually had them steal a $100 bill from a room and them steal a $100 bill from a room and them steal a $100 bill from a room and then we had someone come in and then we had someone come in and then we had someone come in and essentially interrogate them and essentially interrogate them and essentially interrogate them and everyone had to deny it, right? So, the everyone had to deny it, right? So, the everyone had to deny it, right? So, the people who took it were lying and the people who took it were lying and the people who took it were lying and the people who did not take it were telling people who did not take it were telling people who did not take it were telling the truth and we put 100 bucks on the the truth and we put 100 bucks on the the truth and we put 100 bucks on the line, right? So, like if you're able to line, right? So, like if you're able to line, right? So, like if you're able to convince this person that you didn't convince this person that you didn't convince this person that you didn't take it when you actually did, you can take it when you actually did, you can take it when you actually did, you can keep that at Benjamin. And then we keep that at Benjamin. And then we keep that at Benjamin. And then we showed these videos to other people, showed these videos to other people, showed these videos to other people, right? People are not very good right? People are not very good right? People are not very good [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] at detecting these these lies or really at detecting these these lies or really at detecting these these lies or really any kind of lies. On average, people any kind of lies. On average, people any kind of lies. On average, people perform at about 54% accuracy. Like if I perform at about 54% accuracy. Like if I perform at about 54% accuracy. Like if I gave you 12 videos, six are liars, six gave you 12 videos, six are liars, six gave you 12 videos, six are liars, six are truth tellers, are truth tellers, are truth tellers, you'll get like six or seven, right?

  14. you'll get like six or seven, right? you'll get like six or seven, right? >> What if someone is trained? Do the do >> What if someone is trained? Do the do >> What if someone is trained? Do the do the stats increase? the stats increase? the stats increase? >> So they can increase a little bit. Yes. >> So they can increase a little bit. Yes. >> So they can increase a little bit. Yes. What is better actually is learning how What is better actually is learning how What is better actually is learning how to ask better questions. to ask better questions. to ask better questions. >> Oh, really? Yeah. So, instead of just >> Oh, really? Yeah. So, instead of just >> Oh, really? Yeah. So, instead of just being like, "Here's a video of someone being like, "Here's a video of someone being like, "Here's a video of someone lying or telling the truth." Like, lying or telling the truth." Like, lying or telling the truth." Like, that's all you get and just like, "Look that's all you get and just like, "Look that's all you get and just like, "Look at that and tell me if they're lying or at that and tell me if they're lying or at that and tell me if they're lying or telling the truth." Good lie detectors telling the truth." Good lie detectors telling the truth." Good lie detectors ask for more information. Or they ask ask for more information. Or they ask ask for more information. Or they ask unanticipated questions uh where people unanticipated questions uh where people unanticipated questions uh where people haven't prepared for them. And then haven't prepared for them. And then haven't prepared for them. And then those cues of deception, that like those cues of deception, that like those cues of deception, that like sparse information, that like sense that sparse information, that like sense that sparse information, that like sense that they're thinking really hard is really they're thinking really hard is really they're thinking really hard is really going to kind of go off the charts. And going to kind of go off the charts. And going to kind of go off the charts. And so learning how to ask good questions is so learning how to ask good questions is so learning how to ask good questions is actually a really kind of essential tool actually a really kind of essential tool actually a really kind of essential tool for detecting lies. for detecting lies. for detecting lies. >> I mean, we're going to have to go into >> I mean, we're going to have to go into >> I mean, we're going to have to go into that rabbit hole. Um, [laughter] that rabbit hole. Um, [laughter] that rabbit hole. Um, [laughter] I got to be careful here because people I got to be careful here because people I got to be careful here because people are going to take this out of context. are going to take this out of context. are going to take this out of context. Say that I suspect my my partner is Say that I suspect my my partner is Say that I suspect my my partner is cheating on me. cheating on me. cheating on me. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> And I sit them down and I go, "Babe, >> And I sit them down and I go, "Babe, >> And I sit them down and I go, "Babe, listen. are you cheating on me? And they listen. are you cheating on me? And they listen. are you cheating on me? And they go, "No, absolutely not." What would be go, "No, absolutely not." What would be go, "No, absolutely not." What would be a good question to ask to ascertain if a good question to ask to ascertain if a good question to ask to ascertain if they are actually cheating on me?

  15. they are actually cheating on me? they are actually cheating on me? >> So, I think where where you first made a >> So, I think where where you first made a >> So, I think where where you first made a mistake is you asked a closedended mistake is you asked a closedended mistake is you asked a closedended question. You're like, "Are question. You're like, "Are question. You're like, "Are [clears throat] you cheating on me?" [clears throat] you cheating on me?" [clears throat] you cheating on me?" >> No. >> No. >> No. >> You didn't even give them an opportunity >> You didn't even give them an opportunity >> You didn't even give them an opportunity to like have to come up with something to like have to come up with something to like have to come up with something more difficult, right? more difficult, right? more difficult, right? >> If you were like, "Okay, well, I think >> If you were like, "Okay, well, I think >> If you were like, "Okay, well, I think last Friday night you said you had to last Friday night you said you had to last Friday night you said you had to work late, but I don't really believe work late, but I don't really believe work late, but I don't really believe that. I think you were out with someone that. I think you were out with someone that. I think you were out with someone else. You would say, "Tell me about, you else. You would say, "Tell me about, you else. You would say, "Tell me about, you know, work on Friday night." And so then know, work on Friday night." And so then know, work on Friday night." And so then you're you're asking an open-ended you're you're asking an open-ended you're you're asking an open-ended question. question. question. >> Let's role play. >> Let's role play. >> Let's role play. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. You're the [clears throat] one that suspects I'm cheating. that suspects I'm cheating. that suspects I'm cheating. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> And last Friday night, I was up to >> And last Friday night, I was up to >> And last Friday night, I was up to something. So, [laughter] that's the something. So, [laughter] that's the something. So, [laughter] that's the context. Let's Let's do this. context. Let's Let's do this. context. Let's Let's do this. >> Okay. I know you had to work late >> Okay. I know you had to work late >> Okay. I know you had to work late [sighs and gasps] on Friday night. Uh [sighs and gasps] on Friday night. Uh [sighs and gasps] on Friday night. Uh what were you working on? what were you working on? what were you working on? >> Yeah, big big investment deal that we're >> Yeah, big big investment deal that we're >> Yeah, big big investment deal that we're working on with uh couple of uh the working on with uh couple of uh the working on with uh couple of uh the colleagues. We had to get a deck colleagues. We had to get a deck colleagues. We had to get a deck together. So, I was Yeah, I stayed till together. So, I was Yeah, I stayed till together. So, I was Yeah, I stayed till what, 3:00 a.m. in the morning or what, 3:00 a.m. in the morning or what, 3:00 a.m. in the morning or something crazy like that and I ended up something crazy like that and I ended up something crazy like that and I ended up falling asleep on my desk and [gasps] falling asleep on my desk and [gasps] falling asleep on my desk and [gasps] Yeah, that's a long [sighs] one. Anyway, Yeah, that's a long [sighs] one. Anyway, Yeah, that's a long [sighs] one. Anyway, what's for what are we doing today? what's for what are we doing today? what's for what are we doing today? What's for dinner?

  16. What's for dinner? What's for dinner? [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] >> Okay, red flags flying up. So, I would >> Okay, red flags flying up. So, I would >> Okay, red flags flying up. So, I would ask more questions. I would be like, ask more questions. I would be like, ask more questions. I would be like, "Oh, like what what client were you "Oh, like what what client were you "Oh, like what what client were you working on this for? What's the what's working on this for? What's the what's working on this for? What's the what's the deck about?" the deck about?" the deck about?" >> Yeah, it's a we're doing an investment >> Yeah, it's a we're doing an investment >> Yeah, it's a we're doing an investment deal with um with Google. So, it's goo deal with um with Google. So, it's goo deal with um with Google. So, it's goo Google's Yeah, it's Google. Yeah, Google's Yeah, it's Google. Yeah, Google's Yeah, it's Google. Yeah, >> you I could ask you like, okay, tell me >> you I could ask you like, okay, tell me >> you I could ask you like, okay, tell me about um like what was in the deck, about um like what was in the deck, about um like what was in the deck, right? And you give me a little bit kind right? And you give me a little bit kind right? And you give me a little bit kind of sketchy information. A great question of sketchy information. A great question of sketchy information. A great question to have in your back pocket is just tell to have in your back pocket is just tell to have in your back pocket is just tell me more about that. Like you don't even me more about that. Like you don't even me more about that. Like you don't even have to like try very hard to figure out have to like try very hard to figure out have to like try very hard to figure out like where am I going to stump him, like where am I going to stump him, like where am I going to stump him, right? right? right? >> If you just ask, "Tell me more about >> If you just ask, "Tell me more about >> If you just ask, "Tell me more about that." that." that." >> At some point, the liar is going to have >> At some point, the liar is going to have >> At some point, the liar is going to have a lot more trouble coming up with a lot more trouble coming up with a lot more trouble coming up with additional details than the truth additional details than the truth additional details than the truth teller. who's the truth teller is going teller. who's the truth teller is going teller. who's the truth teller is going to be like oh well this is what the to be like oh well this is what the to be like oh well this is what the project was about like it was actually project was about like it was actually project was about like it was actually super annoying because I couldn't get super annoying because I couldn't get super annoying because I couldn't get the font on the you know on the slide the font on the you know on the slide the font on the you know on the slide deck to stay on the whatever like you as deck to stay on the whatever like you as deck to stay on the whatever like you as a trutht teller you were there and you a trutht teller you were there and you a trutht teller you were there and you know all those annoying little things know all those annoying little things know all those annoying little things that maybe you didn't include in the you that maybe you didn't include in the you that maybe you didn't include in the you know first version of the story but if know first version of the story but if know first version of the story but if you someone asks you for more detail you you someone asks you for more detail you you someone asks you for more detail you could go into more detail whereas the could go into more detail whereas the could go into more detail whereas the person who's lying who's making this up person who's lying who's making this up person who's lying who's making this up that's much more difficult for them to that's much more difficult for them to that's much more difficult for them to do because that didn't actually happen.

  17. do because that didn't actually happen. do because that didn't actually happen. Mhm. So, they're [clears throat] going Mhm. So, they're [clears throat] going Mhm. So, they're [clears throat] going to be somewhat vague. to be somewhat vague. to be somewhat vague. >> Yes. Vague. And the details are going to >> Yes. Vague. And the details are going to >> Yes. Vague. And the details are going to be really difficult to verify. So, if be really difficult to verify. So, if be really difficult to verify. So, if they do give you some details, it might they do give you some details, it might they do give you some details, it might be like the things that you you don't be like the things that you you don't be like the things that you you don't know the co-workers that you were know the co-workers that you were know the co-workers that you were working with, right? Oh, it's the new working with, right? Oh, it's the new working with, right? Oh, it's the new guy at work, like uh you don't know him. guy at work, like uh you don't know him. guy at work, like uh you don't know him. So, in general, liars tend to give fewer So, in general, liars tend to give fewer So, in general, liars tend to give fewer verifiable details. And there's this verifiable details. And there's this verifiable details. And there's this actually really fascinating study that actually really fascinating study that actually really fascinating study that you know sometimes we're like we're you know sometimes we're like we're you know sometimes we're like we're trying to like dissect right someone's trying to like dissect right someone's trying to like dissect right someone's behavior. We're trying we're paying behavior. We're trying we're paying behavior. We're trying we're paying attention their words. We're paying attention their words. We're paying attention their words. We're paying attention like oh are they fidgeting or attention like oh are they fidgeting or attention like oh are they fidgeting or something which is actually not a good something which is actually not a good something which is actually not a good cue to deception. We're looking at their cue to deception. We're looking at their cue to deception. We're looking at their eye contact. Also not a good deception. eye contact. Also not a good deception. eye contact. Also not a good deception. So, and we are trying to like create So, and we are trying to like create So, and we are trying to like create this crazy algorithm in our head like this crazy algorithm in our head like this crazy algorithm in our head like adding up all of these different adding up all of these different adding up all of these different behaviors to try to determine whether I behaviors to try to determine whether I behaviors to try to determine whether I think you're lying or telling the truth. think you're lying or telling the truth. think you're lying or telling the truth. Actually, research suggests that if you Actually, research suggests that if you Actually, research suggests that if you just ask how verifiable was that just ask how verifiable was that just ask how verifiable was that statement, that's a better strategy for statement, that's a better strategy for statement, that's a better strategy for trying to accurately detect lies than trying to accurately detect lies than trying to accurately detect lies than trying to use all of these other cues trying to use all of these other cues trying to use all of these other cues that actually don't work.

  18. that actually don't work. that actually don't work. >> I.e., If you ask yourself, >> I.e., If you ask yourself, >> I.e., If you ask yourself, >> yes, >> yes, >> yes, >> how verifiable is the excuse this person >> how verifiable is the excuse this person >> how verifiable is the excuse this person I think his line gave me? I think his line gave me? I think his line gave me? >> Yes. Exactly. >> Yes. Exactly. >> Yes. Exactly. >> Interesting. >> Interesting. >> Interesting. >> I think the broader finding is just that >> I think the broader finding is just that >> I think the broader finding is just that it is better to focus on one cue that it is better to focus on one cue that it is better to focus on one cue that works than to try to put together all of works than to try to put together all of works than to try to put together all of these like little cues that mostly don't these like little cues that mostly don't these like little cues that mostly don't work at all. work at all. work at all. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And the third one there, >> And the third one there, >> And the third one there, >> the third one, you know, we've kind of >> the third one, you know, we've kind of >> the third one, you know, we've kind of touched on, but it's just visible touched on, but it's just visible touched on, but it's just visible cognitive effort. So all of this stuff, cognitive effort. So all of this stuff, cognitive effort. So all of this stuff, you know, the details that people need you know, the details that people need you know, the details that people need to come up with is really hard to do, to come up with is really hard to do, to come up with is really hard to do, right? And they might be speaking really right? And they might be speaking really right? And they might be speaking really slowly. They might be using lots of ums slowly. They might be using lots of ums slowly. They might be using lots of ums and a's and they might be kind of like and a's and they might be kind of like and a's and they might be kind of like furrowing their brow trying to figure furrowing their brow trying to figure furrowing their brow trying to figure things out. Again, it's important to things out. Again, it's important to things out. Again, it's important to remember that like you could pause for a remember that like you could pause for a remember that like you could pause for a million different reasons that are not million different reasons that are not million different reasons that are not deception related, right? You could just deception related, right? You could just deception related, right? You could just be trying to remember something. Uh, you be trying to remember something. Uh, you be trying to remember something. Uh, you could be furrowing your brow because, I could be furrowing your brow because, I could be furrowing your brow because, I don't know, your forehead's itchy, don't know, your forehead's itchy, don't know, your forehead's itchy, whatever. So, none of these are whatever. So, none of these are whatever. So, none of these are Pinocchio's nose, but they are reliably Pinocchio's nose, but they are reliably Pinocchio's nose, but they are reliably associated with deception.

  19. associated with deception. associated with deception. >> What about body language? People always >> What about body language? People always >> What about body language? People always talk about body language. talk about body language. talk about body language. >> Mhm. People put a lot of stock into body >> Mhm. People put a lot of stock into body >> Mhm. People put a lot of stock into body language, particularly into like gaze language, particularly into like gaze language, particularly into like gaze aversion. So, if you go around the world aversion. So, if you go around the world aversion. So, if you go around the world and you ask people what's the number one and you ask people what's the number one and you ask people what's the number one cue that someone is lying to you, they cue that someone is lying to you, they cue that someone is lying to you, they will say sketchy eye contact. And will say sketchy eye contact. And will say sketchy eye contact. And there's no research to suggest that that there's no research to suggest that that there's no research to suggest that that is true. And if you think about it for is true. And if you think about it for is true. And if you think about it for like a hot second, it makes so much like a hot second, it makes so much like a hot second, it makes so much sense, right? Because I sometimes tell a sense, right? Because I sometimes tell a sense, right? Because I sometimes tell a lie. You sometimes tell a lie. We all lie. You sometimes tell a lie. We all lie. You sometimes tell a lie. We all know the stereotype that liars can't know the stereotype that liars can't know the stereotype that liars can't look you in the eye. So if I want you to look you in the eye. So if I want you to look you in the eye. So if I want you to believe me, I'm going to make sure I believe me, I'm going to make sure I believe me, I'm going to make sure I control my eye contact, right? control my eye contact, right? control my eye contact, right? >> Um, and that's something that's that's >> Um, and that's something that's that's >> Um, and that's something that's that's well under our control. And there's well under our control. And there's well under our control. And there's neurody divergence and things like that neurody divergence and things like that neurody divergence and things like that which means that some people who who which means that some people who who which means that some people who who have sort of certain neurodyiversities have sort of certain neurodyiversities have sort of certain neurodyiversities struggle with eye contact but it doesn't struggle with eye contact but it doesn't struggle with eye contact but it doesn't necessarily mean that they're lying. necessarily mean that they're lying. necessarily mean that they're lying. >> Exactly. So there's some emerging >> Exactly. So there's some emerging >> Exactly. So there's some emerging research to suggest that people who are research to suggest that people who are research to suggest that people who are on the autism spectrum are perceived as on the autism spectrum are perceived as on the autism spectrum are perceived as lying more uh when they're actually lying more uh when they're actually lying more uh when they're actually telling the truth. then that's because telling the truth. then that's because telling the truth. then that's because of this eye contact thing which people of this eye contact thing which people of this eye contact thing which people are using as a cue to deception but in are using as a cue to deception but in are using as a cue to deception but in fact is unrelated to deception. I mean fact is unrelated to deception. I mean fact is unrelated to deception. I mean there's also like cultural differences there's also like cultural differences there's also like cultural differences right in some cultures um it's more right in some cultures um it's more right in some cultures um it's more respectful like not to look at you in respectful like not to look at you in respectful like not to look at you in the eye and so that can also lead to the eye and so that can also lead to the eye and so that can also lead to kind of errors in our judgment kind of errors in our judgment kind of errors in our judgment >> and there's this sort of dark >> and there's this sort of dark >> and there's this sort of dark personality trait um thing I hear a lot

  20. personality trait um thing I hear a lot personality trait um thing I hear a lot is a triad is a triad is a triad >> it refers to it was a triad now we got a >> it refers to it was a triad now we got a >> it refers to it was a triad now we got a >> tetraad okay so is that what this is >> tetraad okay so is that what this is >> tetraad okay so is that what this is >> yes >> yes >> yes >> okay so if you want to reveal what each >> okay so if you want to reveal what each >> okay so if you want to reveal what each of those is one at a time of those is one at a time of those is one at a time >> psychopathy for example What is >> psychopathy for example What is >> psychopathy for example What is psychopathy? psychopathy? psychopathy? >> Psychopathy is a constellation that is a >> Psychopathy is a constellation that is a >> Psychopathy is a constellation that is a set of personality traits. So, it's not set of personality traits. So, it's not set of personality traits. So, it's not just one thing having kind of a just one thing having kind of a just one thing having kind of a superficial charm. They're quite superficial charm. They're quite superficial charm. They're quite manipulative and they tend to be pretty manipulative and they tend to be pretty manipulative and they tend to be pretty grandiose. So, they've got a pretty grandiose. So, they've got a pretty grandiose. So, they've got a pretty inflated view of themselves. There's inflated view of themselves. There's inflated view of themselves. There's also emotional components. So, they tend also emotional components. So, they tend also emotional components. So, they tend to have pretty shallow emotional to have pretty shallow emotional to have pretty shallow emotional experiences. experiences. experiences. A lack of remorse uh and guilt for A lack of remorse uh and guilt for A lack of remorse uh and guilt for harming other people. and they tend not harming other people. and they tend not harming other people. and they tend not to take responsibility for their own to take responsibility for their own to take responsibility for their own actions. actions. actions. In addition, they tend to be uh pretty In addition, they tend to be uh pretty In addition, they tend to be uh pretty impulsive. So, they are kind of living impulsive. So, they are kind of living impulsive. So, they are kind of living life by the seat of their pants and life by the seat of their pants and life by the seat of their pants and they're not really, you know, planning they're not really, you know, planning they're not really, you know, planning far out into the future. And so, they far out into the future. And so, they far out into the future. And so, they might, you know, kind of mooch off of a might, you know, kind of mooch off of a might, you know, kind of mooch off of a family members or a romantic partner.

  21. family members or a romantic partner. family members or a romantic partner. And then lastly, they tend to break a And then lastly, they tend to break a And then lastly, they tend to break a lot of rules. So this might be just like lot of rules. So this might be just like lot of rules. So this might be just like workplace rules or social norms, but workplace rules or social norms, but workplace rules or social norms, but psychopathy has largely been studied in psychopathy has largely been studied in psychopathy has largely been studied in criminal populations. So this could also criminal populations. So this could also criminal populations. So this could also be laws. The the other three of the be laws. The the other three of the be laws. The the other three of the so-called dark tetrad share some so-called dark tetrad share some so-called dark tetrad share some elements but also has some like unique elements but also has some like unique elements but also has some like unique flavors. Um so the next one we've got flavors. Um so the next one we've got flavors. Um so the next one we've got here is Machavevelianism here is Machavevelianism here is Machavevelianism and that is you know named after Nicolo and that is you know named after Nicolo and that is you know named after Nicolo Machaveli who wrote um the prince which Machaveli who wrote um the prince which Machaveli who wrote um the prince which is a kind of a how-to manual to like is a kind of a how-to manual to like is a kind of a how-to manual to like gain and wield power effectively. gain and wield power effectively. gain and wield power effectively. >> So as a personality trait they tend to >> So as a personality trait they tend to >> So as a personality trait they tend to be pretty cynical about other people. be pretty cynical about other people. be pretty cynical about other people. They tell a lot of lies and they try to They tell a lot of lies and they try to They tell a lot of lies and they try to like manipulate people, but it's more like manipulate people, but it's more like manipulate people, but it's more like three-dimensional chess, you know, like three-dimensional chess, you know, like three-dimensional chess, you know, like they might learn a little tidbit like they might learn a little tidbit like they might learn a little tidbit about you, Stephen. They'll be like, about you, Stephen. They'll be like, about you, Stephen. They'll be like, "You know what? I could use that against "You know what? I could use that against "You know what? I could use that against him later. I'm just going to like put him later. I'm just going to like put him later. I'm just going to like put that in my back pocket." And, you know, that in my back pocket." And, you know, that in my back pocket." And, you know, when I need to manipulate or like a when I need to manipulate or like a when I need to manipulate or like a blackmail you in the future, right?

  22. blackmail you in the future, right? blackmail you in the future, right? They'll have that available to them. So, They'll have that available to them. So, They'll have that available to them. So, this is they're very interested in this is they're very interested in this is they're very interested in power, which of course is where the name power, which of course is where the name power, which of course is where the name comes from. Next one is narcissism. You comes from. Next one is narcissism. You comes from. Next one is narcissism. You know, that's one that people know pretty know, that's one that people know pretty know, that's one that people know pretty well, right? So, these are people who well, right? So, these are people who well, right? So, these are people who tend to be very entitled and they're tend to be very entitled and they're tend to be very entitled and they're very willing to exploit other people in very willing to exploit other people in very willing to exploit other people in order to get what they think they order to get what they think they order to get what they think they deserve, right? So, it's like very deserve, right? So, it's like very deserve, right? So, it's like very relentless kind of self focus. relentless kind of self focus. relentless kind of self focus. >> This word has been used quite a lot in >> This word has been used quite a lot in >> This word has been used quite a lot in culture. culture. culture. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> Uhhuh. >> It's thrown around >> It's thrown around >> It's thrown around all the time, all the time, all the time, >> constantly. Yes. >> constantly. Yes. >> constantly. Yes. >> What's your view of that? >> What's your view of that? >> What's your view of that? >> I mean, narcissism, like all of these >> I mean, narcissism, like all of these >> I mean, narcissism, like all of these traits, exist on a continuum. traits, exist on a continuum. traits, exist on a continuum. >> Okay. [clears throat] >> Okay. [clears throat] >> Okay. [clears throat] >> Okay. So you or anyone else myself could >> Okay. So you or anyone else myself could >> Okay. So you or anyone else myself could take a measure, a self-report measure of take a measure, a self-report measure of take a measure, a self-report measure of the extent to which I have these traits, the extent to which I have these traits, the extent to which I have these traits, right? And you can land anywhere from right? And you can land anywhere from right? And you can land anywhere from very low to very high. Now some of these very low to very high. Now some of these very low to very high. Now some of these traits, narcissism being one of them, traits, narcissism being one of them, traits, narcissism being one of them, actually has a there's a personality actually has a there's a personality actually has a there's a personality disorder diagnosis at the incredibly disorder diagnosis at the incredibly disorder diagnosis at the incredibly high end, right? So this appears in the high end, right? So this appears in the high end, right? So this appears in the diagnostic and statistical manual which diagnostic and statistical manual which diagnostic and statistical manual which is basically like a list of different is basically like a list of different is basically like a list of different mental disorders. You could go to a mental disorders. You could go to a mental disorders. You could go to a psychologist or psychiatrist. They could psychologist or psychiatrist. They could psychologist or psychiatrist. They could assess you and diagnose you if you have assess you and diagnose you if you have assess you and diagnose you if you have like extreme levels of narcissism. But like extreme levels of narcissism. But like extreme levels of narcissism. But like people land everywhere, right? So I like people land everywhere, right? So I like people land everywhere, right? So I think part of the problem is that people think part of the problem is that people think part of the problem is that people say, "Oh, she's a narcissist, right?

  23. say, "Oh, she's a narcissist, right? say, "Oh, she's a narcissist, right? He's a narcissist." Are they a He's a narcissist." Are they a He's a narcissist." Are they a narcissist or a psychopath? And they narcissist or a psychopath? And they narcissist or a psychopath? And they make this kind of very binary make this kind of very binary make this kind of very binary distinction there, right? I guess I have distinction there, right? I guess I have distinction there, right? I guess I have qualms with those words for a couple of qualms with those words for a couple of qualms with those words for a couple of different reasons. You know, these exist different reasons. You know, these exist different reasons. You know, these exist on a continuum. There's no clear like on a continuum. There's no clear like on a continuum. There's no clear like >> moment where >> moment where >> moment where >> moment where it becomes you are a >> moment where it becomes you are a >> moment where it becomes you are a narcissist versus not a narcissist. And narcissist versus not a narcissist. And narcissist versus not a narcissist. And so, as with all of these other traits, so, as with all of these other traits, so, as with all of these other traits, it's a bit of a mouthful, but I think it's a bit of a mouthful, but I think it's a bit of a mouthful, but I think it's more accurate to say they they have it's more accurate to say they they have it's more accurate to say they they have relatively high levels of narcissism or relatively high levels of narcissism or relatively high levels of narcissism or psychopathy or or whatever the case is. psychopathy or or whatever the case is. psychopathy or or whatever the case is. >> And you said that there's two main types >> And you said that there's two main types >> And you said that there's two main types of narcissist. of narcissist. of narcissist. >> Yeah. So, increasingly, uh, personality >> Yeah. So, increasingly, uh, personality >> Yeah. So, increasingly, uh, personality psychologists are identifying this kind psychologists are identifying this kind psychologists are identifying this kind of vulnerable type and, uh, a grandiose of vulnerable type and, uh, a grandiose of vulnerable type and, uh, a grandiose type. So, Grandios is like one that we type. So, Grandios is like one that we type. So, Grandios is like one that we all know well where it's like they've all know well where it's like they've all know well where it's like they've got this ego in it's huge. It like got this ego in it's huge. It like got this ego in it's huge. It like cannot be popped, right? It's like cannot be popped, right? It's like cannot be popped, right? It's like [laughter] they get this negative [laughter] they get this negative [laughter] they get this negative feedback and it's like nothing gets feedback and it's like nothing gets feedback and it's like nothing gets through to them and they always think through to them and they always think through to them and they always think they should be the one in charge, etc.

  24. they should be the one in charge, etc. they should be the one in charge, etc. For those individuals, they tend to get For those individuals, they tend to get For those individuals, they tend to get very angry uh with a particular kind of very angry uh with a particular kind of very angry uh with a particular kind of threat to their ego and that is like a threat to their ego and that is like a threat to their ego and that is like a failure to achieve. Like they wanted failure to achieve. Like they wanted failure to achieve. Like they wanted this uh promotion at work, they didn't this uh promotion at work, they didn't this uh promotion at work, they didn't get it. Mhm. [clears throat] get it. Mhm. [clears throat] get it. Mhm. [clears throat] >> Vulnerable individuals actually have >> Vulnerable individuals actually have >> Vulnerable individuals actually have kind of um a very fragile ego. kind of um a very fragile ego. kind of um a very fragile ego. >> Interesting. >> Interesting. >> Interesting. >> So it can be popped very easily >> So it can be popped very easily >> So it can be popped very easily essentially. So if they get negative essentially. So if they get negative essentially. So if they get negative feedback from people maybe they get like feedback from people maybe they get like feedback from people maybe they get like socially rejected. That's when they socially rejected. That's when they socially rejected. That's when they become quite angry. That's more of a become quite angry. That's more of a become quite angry. That's more of a trigger for them. And is it you using trigger for them. And is it you using trigger for them. And is it you using the word angry as the outcome of both the word angry as the outcome of both the word angry as the outcome of both those types of narcissists, those types of narcissists, those types of narcissists, >> but I guess one would assume that maybe >> but I guess one would assume that maybe >> but I guess one would assume that maybe just from the wording that a vulnerable just from the wording that a vulnerable just from the wording that a vulnerable narcissist would get more upset or more narcissist would get more upset or more narcissist would get more upset or more self-critical or something like that. Uh self-critical or something like that. Uh self-critical or something like that. Uh the research at least was focused on on the research at least was focused on on the research at least was focused on on anger in response to these kinds of anger in response to these kinds of anger in response to these kinds of threats to their ego, but certainly threats to their ego, but certainly threats to their ego, but certainly emotional, you know, like combative, you emotional, you know, like combative, you emotional, you know, like combative, you know, this is when you're going to get know, this is when you're going to get know, this is when you're going to get like a really negative response. Like like a really negative response. Like like a really negative response. Like someone who uh is relatively low on someone who uh is relatively low on someone who uh is relatively low on narcissism of both kinds, you know, narcissism of both kinds, you know, narcissism of both kinds, you know, could take that kind of feedback that could take that kind of feedback that could take that kind of feedback that like, no, I don't think a second date is like, no, I don't think a second date is like, no, I don't think a second date is really for us, right? like someone with really for us, right? like someone with really for us, right? like someone with vulnerable narcissism is going to vulnerable narcissism is going to vulnerable narcissism is going to respond badly.

  25. respond badly. respond badly. >> Do you know why I asked the question? >> Do you know why I asked the question? >> Do you know why I asked the question? It's just a friend of mine because of a It's just a friend of mine because of a It's just a friend of mine because of a conversation I was having the other day conversation I was having the other day conversation I was having the other day where we were interviewing someone where we were interviewing someone where we were interviewing someone >> and during the interview process they >> and during the interview process they >> and during the interview process they were very quick to say to claim credit were very quick to say to claim credit were very quick to say to claim credit for like all of the things the company for like all of the things the company for like all of the things the company they worked at had done. they worked at had done. they worked at had done. >> And they were also very quick to say >> And they were also very quick to say >> And they were also very quick to say that they were like good at everything. that they were like good at everything. that they were like good at everything. Even as I walked out the room with them Even as I walked out the room with them Even as I walked out the room with them and I said, "Oh, can you can I message and I said, "Oh, can you can I message and I said, "Oh, can you can I message you on this particular app?" They said, you on this particular app?" They said, you on this particular app?" They said, "I'm amazing at that app." Again, I'm an "I'm amazing at that app." Again, I'm an "I'm amazing at that app." Again, I'm an anonymizing, so a lot of this is anonymizing, so a lot of this is anonymizing, so a lot of this is slightly changed. And I walked out of slightly changed. And I walked out of slightly changed. And I walked out of the room weirdly, having interviewed the room weirdly, having interviewed the room weirdly, having interviewed thousands and thousands of people over thousands and thousands of people over thousands and thousands of people over the years, the years, the years, >> thinking to myself, they were so lovely, >> thinking to myself, they were so lovely, >> thinking to myself, they were so lovely, but it felt to me like it was more but it felt to me like it was more but it felt to me like it was more coming from a place of insecurity. coming from a place of insecurity. coming from a place of insecurity. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> And when you look at their story, it's a >> And when you look at their story, it's a >> And when you look at their story, it's a story of someone who has been story of someone who has been story of someone who has been continually continually continually counted out, overlooked for counted out, overlooked for counted out, overlooked for opportunities, and almost has this a bit opportunities, and almost has this a bit opportunities, and almost has this a bit of a chip on their shoulder to try and of a chip on their shoulder to try and of a chip on their shoulder to try and be be be >> prove themselves. >> prove themselves. >> prove themselves. >> Mhm. Now, when I another person I think >> Mhm. Now, when I another person I think >> Mhm. Now, when I another person I think would look at that same pattern of would look at that same pattern of would look at that same pattern of behavior and say, "Oh, that that behavior and say, "Oh, that that behavior and say, "Oh, that that person's a narcissist." So, when I heard person's a narcissist." So, when I heard person's a narcissist." So, when I heard vulnerable narcissist versus the sort of vulnerable narcissist versus the sort of vulnerable narcissist versus the sort of grandiose one, I was wondering if is at grandiose one, I was wondering if is at grandiose one, I was wondering if is at all linked to what I'm saying. Like, all linked to what I'm saying. Like, all linked to what I'm saying. Like, >> for vulnerable narcissism, the reason >> for vulnerable narcissism, the reason >> for vulnerable narcissism, the reason that they would respond so poorly to that they would respond so poorly to that they would respond so poorly to this kind of rejection is that they need this kind of rejection is that they need this kind of rejection is that they need kind of constant admiration and positive kind of constant admiration and positive kind of constant admiration and positive feedback from other people to keep their feedback from other people to keep their feedback from other people to keep their ego like going. I I called this person's ego like going. I I called this person's ego like going. I I called this person's former employer to get a reference and former employer to get a reference and former employer to get a reference and they said about him they said about him they said about him >> that >> that >> that one of the quotes was he always needs a one of the quotes was he always needs a one of the quotes was he always needs a gold star.

  26. gold star. gold star. >> What's the difference between deep >> What's the difference between deep >> What's the difference between deep insecurity and narcissism in this insecurity and narcissism in this insecurity and narcissism in this regard? regard? regard? >> The deep insecurity um it would need to >> The deep insecurity um it would need to >> The deep insecurity um it would need to be coupled with these like entitlement be coupled with these like entitlement be coupled with these like entitlement like there's still a grandio sense of like there's still a grandio sense of like there's still a grandio sense of self. It's just that it is quite self. It's just that it is quite self. It's just that it is quite fragile. So they're like they they think fragile. So they're like they they think fragile. So they're like they they think they're really good and they're willing they're really good and they're willing they're really good and they're willing to exploit other people to get what they to exploit other people to get what they to exploit other people to get what they think they deserve and they may feel think they deserve and they may feel think they deserve and they may feel like they've been victimized, right? And like they've been victimized, right? And like they've been victimized, right? And that's why they haven't gotten all of that's why they haven't gotten all of that's why they haven't gotten all of the accolades that they think they the accolades that they think they the accolades that they think they deserve. Now I think kind of regardless deserve. Now I think kind of regardless deserve. Now I think kind of regardless of where this person, you know, sits on of where this person, you know, sits on of where this person, you know, sits on this continuum, you know, they might this continuum, you know, they might this continuum, you know, they might still have like incredible skills. They still have like incredible skills. They still have like incredible skills. They might have the abilities that you're might have the abilities that you're might have the abilities that you're looking for. And so, is this something looking for. And so, is this something looking for. And so, is this something you can manage or is this going to you can manage or is this going to you can manage or is this going to create problems? create problems? create problems? >> I didn't get any sense that they were >> I didn't get any sense that they were >> I didn't get any sense that they were entitled or that they would use other entitled or that they would use other entitled or that they would use other people to their advantage. I I got the people to their advantage. I I got the people to their advantage. I I got the impression that people would generally impression that people would generally impression that people would generally like them like them like them >> and that they weren't entitled at all, >> and that they weren't entitled at all, >> and that they weren't entitled at all, but they still had these sort of sort of but they still had these sort of sort of but they still had these sort of sort of self-promotional traits. And I think in self-promotional traits. And I think in self-promotional traits. And I think in society, the minute someone's like society, the minute someone's like society, the minute someone's like overly self-promotional, we run to the overly self-promotional, we run to the overly self-promotional, we run to the sort of narcissist category versus it sort of narcissist category versus it sort of narcissist category versus it could be other things, I'm presuming.

  27. could be other things, I'm presuming. could be other things, I'm presuming. >> Yes. I mean, I think in that situation, >> Yes. I mean, I think in that situation, >> Yes. I mean, I think in that situation, right, you need to be quite mindful of right, you need to be quite mindful of right, you need to be quite mindful of the situation as well, right? So, like the situation as well, right? So, like the situation as well, right? So, like our behavior is kind of a combination of our behavior is kind of a combination of our behavior is kind of a combination of both our personality and the situation both our personality and the situation both our personality and the situation that we're in. And so, if you're at a that we're in. And so, if you're at a that we're in. And so, if you're at a job interview, like your whole goal is job interview, like your whole goal is job interview, like your whole goal is to show people like, I can do this job. to show people like, I can do this job. to show people like, I can do this job. I've got the skills that you need. And I've got the skills that you need. And I've got the skills that you need. And so in a job interview, we might kind of so in a job interview, we might kind of so in a job interview, we might kind of come across as like a more confident, come across as like a more confident, come across as like a more confident, more, you know, we're we're presenting more, you know, we're we're presenting more, you know, we're we're presenting ourselves in the best possible light, ourselves in the best possible light, ourselves in the best possible light, but I think we're very quick to rush to but I think we're very quick to rush to but I think we're very quick to rush to a personality assessment. This is called a personality assessment. This is called a personality assessment. This is called the um fundamental attribution error. the um fundamental attribution error. the um fundamental attribution error. So, it's like when I see someone behave So, it's like when I see someone behave So, it's like when I see someone behave in a particular way, like they're in a particular way, like they're in a particular way, like they're they're maybe being self-promoting, they're maybe being self-promoting, they're maybe being self-promoting, saying all the things that they can do saying all the things that they can do saying all the things that they can do really well, I could be like, "Oh, really well, I could be like, "Oh, really well, I could be like, "Oh, that's narcissistic." Right? That's a that's narcissistic." Right? That's a that's narcissistic." Right? That's a personality trait. personality trait. personality trait. >> And we tend to be more likely to do that >> And we tend to be more likely to do that >> And we tend to be more likely to do that to others. But if I was in their shoes, to others. But if I was in their shoes, to others. But if I was in their shoes, I would be like, I was just trying to I would be like, I was just trying to I would be like, I was just trying to show Stephen like what I could do. It's show Stephen like what I could do. It's show Stephen like what I could do. It's the situation that made me act kind of the situation that made me act kind of the situation that made me act kind of >> bigger than my britches, right? So we >> bigger than my britches, right? So we >> bigger than my britches, right? So we need to also be aware of like the need to also be aware of like the need to also be aware of like the situation can impact our behavior and so situation can impact our behavior and so situation can impact our behavior and so we want to be not too quick to make a we want to be not too quick to make a we want to be not too quick to make a personality attribution where the personality attribution where the personality attribution where the situation could explain that. And that's situation could explain that. And that's situation could explain that. And that's maybe a really important point to make maybe a really important point to make maybe a really important point to make here is that personality is a consistent

  28. here is that personality is a consistent here is that personality is a consistent pattern of thinking, feeling, and pattern of thinking, feeling, and pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving behaving behaving >> over time and across context. So, if >> over time and across context. So, if >> over time and across context. So, if you've only got one interaction with you've only got one interaction with you've only got one interaction with this person, you've only got one this person, you've only got one this person, you've only got one interaction with this person, you interaction with this person, you interaction with this person, you probably get a sense of their probably get a sense of their probably get a sense of their personality, but you might see them, you personality, but you might see them, you personality, but you might see them, you know, out with their friends or with know, out with their friends or with know, out with their friends or with their family and they might be they their family and they might be they their family and they might be they might not be kind of so boastful, right? might not be kind of so boastful, right? might not be kind of so boastful, right? And [clears throat] that might suggest And [clears throat] that might suggest And [clears throat] that might suggest that this is really the situation that this is really the situation that this is really the situation talking, not the personality. And talking, not the personality. And talking, not the personality. And >> what are the gender differences in >> what are the gender differences in >> what are the gender differences in narcissism in terms of both different narcissism in terms of both different narcissism in terms of both different types of narcissism? You mentioned types of narcissism? You mentioned types of narcissism? You mentioned vulnerable narcissism and also grandiose vulnerable narcissism and also grandiose vulnerable narcissism and also grandiose narcissism. And then I guess there might narcissism. And then I guess there might narcissism. And then I guess there might be some other gender differences in our be some other gender differences in our be some other gender differences in our ability to like spot these behaviors. ability to like spot these behaviors. ability to like spot these behaviors. >> So when it comes to all of these traits >> So when it comes to all of these traits >> So when it comes to all of these traits that we're talking about, um, men tend that we're talking about, um, men tend that we're talking about, um, men tend to score somewhat higher than women. That is not to say that women cannot That is not to say that women cannot That is not to say that women cannot score like very high on these traits. score like very high on these traits. score like very high on these traits. There are certainly cases and there's There are certainly cases and there's There are certainly cases and there's quite a bit of overlap, but on average, quite a bit of overlap, but on average, quite a bit of overlap, but on average, you know, the averages for men tend to you know, the averages for men tend to you know, the averages for men tend to be higher than the averages for women.

  29. be higher than the averages for women. be higher than the averages for women. >> And there's a fourth break. >> And there's a fourth break. >> And there's a fourth break. >> That's the the newest and latest one, >> That's the the newest and latest one, >> That's the the newest and latest one, which is sadism. When you hear sadism, which is sadism. When you hear sadism, which is sadism. When you hear sadism, you might jump to like pretty extreme. you might jump to like pretty extreme. you might jump to like pretty extreme. >> Yeah. [laughter] I was thinking of like >> Yeah. [laughter] I was thinking of like >> Yeah. [laughter] I was thinking of like the devil and stuff, huh? the devil and stuff, huh? the devil and stuff, huh? >> Yeah. I mean, I first started studying >> Yeah. I mean, I first started studying >> Yeah. I mean, I first started studying sadistic behavior in the context of like sadistic behavior in the context of like sadistic behavior in the context of like sexual homicides. Like I was reading sexual homicides. Like I was reading sexual homicides. Like I was reading through these descriptions of criminal through these descriptions of criminal through these descriptions of criminal behavior and I was looking for signs of behavior and I was looking for signs of behavior and I was looking for signs of sadistic treatment of the victim. So sadistic treatment of the victim. So sadistic treatment of the victim. So it's like it can get incredibly extreme, it's like it can get incredibly extreme, it's like it can get incredibly extreme, right? And that's probably where our right? And that's probably where our right? And that's probably where our mind goes. But there's also like kind of mind goes. But there's also like kind of mind goes. But there's also like kind of more everyday versions. One good example more everyday versions. One good example more everyday versions. One good example is like online trolling. So we know that is like online trolling. So we know that is like online trolling. So we know that people who are relatively high in sadism people who are relatively high in sadism people who are relatively high in sadism tend to they they take pleasure in other tend to they they take pleasure in other tend to they they take pleasure in other people's pain, right? And so you could people's pain, right? And so you could people's pain, right? And so you could do that in incredibly like gruesome, do that in incredibly like gruesome, do that in incredibly like gruesome, horrifying ways, or you could just be horrifying ways, or you could just be horrifying ways, or you could just be like pushing people's buttons online like pushing people's buttons online like pushing people's buttons online trying to get people upset. They all trying to get people upset. They all trying to get people upset. They all share kind of three things. They are share kind of three things. They are share kind of three things. They are callous, so they don't care about other callous, so they don't care about other callous, so they don't care about other people. They don't care about your your people. They don't care about your your people. They don't care about your your feelings or your outcomes. They're feelings or your outcomes. They're feelings or your outcomes. They're manipulative, so they're willing to lie manipulative, so they're willing to lie manipulative, so they're willing to lie and cheat to get what they want. And and cheat to get what they want. And and cheat to get what they want. And they're hostile toward other people. So they're hostile toward other people. So they're hostile toward other people. So that's kind of like the core of all of that's kind of like the core of all of that's kind of like the core of all of these traits. That's what they share.

  30. these traits. That's what they share. these traits. That's what they share. >> Facadesh. >> Facadesh. >> Facadesh. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Are they good at hiding it? >> Are they good at hiding it? >> Are they good at hiding it? >> Yes. In fact, some of the like earliest descriptions of psychopathy in descriptions of psychopathy in descriptions of psychopathy in particular described it as like a mask particular described it as like a mask particular described it as like a mask of sanity. And so it's like they can of sanity. And so it's like they can of sanity. And so it's like they can seem quite kind of normal on the seem quite kind of normal on the seem quite kind of normal on the surface, but if you kind of get a look surface, but if you kind of get a look surface, but if you kind of get a look underneath the hood, you see that underneath the hood, you see that underneath the hood, you see that they're not running the same kind of they're not running the same kind of they're not running the same kind of operating system that you are. operating system that you are. operating system that you are. >> What is the inverse of all this stuff? >> What is the inverse of all this stuff? >> What is the inverse of all this stuff? because we've pointed at the traits and because we've pointed at the traits and because we've pointed at the traits and a lot of those are things people a lot of those are things people a lot of those are things people understand but there's also some understand but there's also some understand but there's also some misconceptions. There's also the misconceptions. There's also the misconceptions. There's also the opposite which is like opposite which is like opposite which is like >> people think narcissists or psychopaths >> people think narcissists or psychopaths >> people think narcissists or psychopaths can't hold eye contact is one of the can't hold eye contact is one of the can't hold eye contact is one of the ones you hear all the time. What are some of these ones that through your some of these ones that through your some of these ones that through your research you've been able to debunk as research you've been able to debunk as research you've been able to debunk as not being true. not being true. not being true. >> So I think one of the biggest ones is >> So I think one of the biggest ones is >> So I think one of the biggest ones is that all people with high levels of that all people with high levels of that all people with high levels of psychopathy are violent and that's psychopathy are violent and that's psychopathy are violent and that's absolutely not the case. absolutely not the case. absolutely not the case. >> It kind of links to your your tweet >> It kind of links to your your tweet >> It kind of links to your your tweet here. here. here. >> Yeah. So most people think a psychopath >> Yeah. So most people think a psychopath >> Yeah. So most people think a psychopath looks dangerous. They picture the looks dangerous. They picture the looks dangerous. They picture the villain in a movie, but that's not how villain in a movie, but that's not how villain in a movie, but that's not how it works in real life. So you probably it works in real life. So you probably it works in real life. So you probably noticed that like in that description noticed that like in that description noticed that like in that description that I gave you, kind of a long-winded that I gave you, kind of a long-winded that I gave you, kind of a long-winded description of psychopathy with all description of psychopathy with all description of psychopathy with all those four different elements, I did say those four different elements, I did say those four different elements, I did say that there was rulebreaking, right?

  31. that there was rulebreaking, right? that there was rulebreaking, right? >> And sometimes that's criminal rule >> And sometimes that's criminal rule >> And sometimes that's criminal rule breaking. So that could be violent breaking. So that could be violent breaking. So that could be violent behavior, but it's not necessarily so. behavior, but it's not necessarily so. behavior, but it's not necessarily so. So psychopathy is like a risk factor for So psychopathy is like a risk factor for So psychopathy is like a risk factor for violent behavior, but there's plenty of violent behavior, but there's plenty of violent behavior, but there's plenty of people who would score relatively highly people who would score relatively highly people who would score relatively highly and and never engage in violent and and never engage in violent and and never engage in violent behavior. They might break rules in behavior. They might break rules in behavior. They might break rules in other ways, right? So I think whenever other ways, right? So I think whenever other ways, right? So I think whenever we hear the word psychopathy, what comes we hear the word psychopathy, what comes we hear the word psychopathy, what comes to mind is like a Ted Bundy, right? Ted to mind is like a Ted Bundy, right? Ted to mind is like a Ted Bundy, right? Ted Bundy type character. He reportedly Bundy type character. He reportedly Bundy type character. He reportedly scored, I think it's 39 out of 40 or scored, I think it's 39 out of 40 or scored, I think it's 39 out of 40 or something on the psychopathy checklist something on the psychopathy checklist something on the psychopathy checklist revised, which is a a measure that uh revised, which is a a measure that uh revised, which is a a measure that uh psychologists will use to assess how uh psychologists will use to assess how uh psychologists will use to assess how uh psychopathic someone is. So yeah, he's a psychopathic someone is. So yeah, he's a psychopathic someone is. So yeah, he's a bit of a poster boy uh for for those bit of a poster boy uh for for those bit of a poster boy uh for for those traits, but um certainly people can traits, but um certainly people can traits, but um certainly people can score highly without being, you know, a score highly without being, you know, a score highly without being, you know, a serial murderer. serial murderer. serial murderer. >> In terms of the the the amount of the >> In terms of the the the amount of the >> In terms of the the the amount of the population that have one of these dark population that have one of these dark population that have one of these dark personality traits, personality traits, personality traits, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> yeah, >> what is what are the numbers? 32. is it? is it? >> So this is a complicated question >> So this is a complicated question >> So this is a complicated question because as I told you, you know, all because as I told you, you know, all because as I told you, you know, all these traits exist on a continuum. So these traits exist on a continuum. So these traits exist on a continuum. So the proportion of people that we say are the proportion of people that we say are the proportion of people that we say are high on these traits depends on where high on these traits depends on where high on these traits depends on where you put that cut point. Right? you put that cut point. Right? you put that cut point. Right? >> If we're talking about psychopathy and >> If we're talking about psychopathy and >> If we're talking about psychopathy and clinical levels, that means um a score clinical levels, that means um a score clinical levels, that means um a score of 30 out of 40 on the psychopathy of 30 out of 40 on the psychopathy of 30 out of 40 on the psychopathy checklist revised or higher. That's checklist revised or higher. That's checklist revised or higher. That's about 1% of the population. Narcissistic about 1% of the population. Narcissistic about 1% of the population. Narcissistic personality disorder. So again, very personality disorder. So again, very personality disorder. So again, very extreme levels of those traits, enough extreme levels of those traits, enough extreme levels of those traits, enough to warrant a diagnosis. That would be to warrant a diagnosis. That would be to warrant a diagnosis. That would be two to five percent. two to five percent. two to five percent. >> We don't have clinical cut offs for >> We don't have clinical cut offs for >> We don't have clinical cut offs for sadism and machavelianism. sadism and machavelianism. sadism and machavelianism. What we do have is a ton of data of What we do have is a ton of data of What we do have is a ton of data of people who have completed self-report people who have completed self-report people who have completed self-report questionnaires. So like one way that you questionnaires. So like one way that you questionnaires. So like one way that you can kind of uh get a sense of how many can kind of uh get a sense of how many can kind of uh get a sense of how many people are high on these traits is by people are high on these traits is by people are high on these traits is by looking at the proportion of people who looking at the proportion of people who looking at the proportion of people who on average agree with the items. Like if on average agree with the items. Like if on average agree with the items. Like if I say I am a born leader, I say I am a born leader, I say I am a born leader, >> to what extent do you agree with that?

  33. >> to what extent do you agree with that? >> to what extent do you agree with that? That's a narcissism item. That's a narcissism item. So if you just look at the people who on average agree look at the people who on average agree look at the people who on average agree with the items that we use to with the items that we use to with the items that we use to self-report assess uh these traits, it's self-report assess uh these traits, it's self-report assess uh these traits, it's about 10% of the population. about 10% of the population. about 10% of the population. >> And where where does this come from? Is it genetics? Is it childhood? Is it genetics? Is it childhood? Is it genetics? Is it something else? something else? something else? >> The answer is both. So the research >> The answer is both. So the research >> The answer is both. So the research suggests that uh with respect to suggests that uh with respect to suggests that uh with respect to psychopathy, narcissism, quite similar, psychopathy, narcissism, quite similar, psychopathy, narcissism, quite similar, the variation in someone's score um on the variation in someone's score um on the variation in someone's score um on that personality trait is about 50% that personality trait is about 50% that personality trait is about 50% genetic and about 50% environmental genetic and about 50% environmental genetic and about 50% environmental experiences. And so, you know, it can in experiences. And so, you know, it can in experiences. And so, you know, it can in some ways make us realize that these some ways make us realize that these some ways make us realize that these people didn't ask to be this way because people didn't ask to be this way because people didn't ask to be this way because I mean, you don't get to choose your I mean, you don't get to choose your I mean, you don't get to choose your parents, so you're you don't get to parents, so you're you don't get to parents, so you're you don't get to choose your genetics. And then when it choose your genetics. And then when it choose your genetics. And then when it comes to those environmental experiences comes to those environmental experiences comes to those environmental experiences often they're like early life often they're like early life often they're like early life experiences and not good ones. So experiences and not good ones. So experiences and not good ones. So research suggests that you know abuse uh research suggests that you know abuse uh research suggests that you know abuse uh really kind of cold uncaring parenting really kind of cold uncaring parenting really kind of cold uncaring parenting style early in life can increase the style early in life can increase the style early in life can increase the likelihood that someone will have higher likelihood that someone will have higher likelihood that someone will have higher levels of these traits later in life.

  34. levels of these traits later in life. levels of these traits later in life. for narcissism. Um, another variable is for narcissism. Um, another variable is for narcissism. So like you might have a storm, right? So like you might have a storm, right? So like you might have a parent who has really high levels of parent who has really high levels of parent who has really high levels of these traits. So they're passing on that these traits. So they're passing on that these traits. So they're passing on that potential genetic risk factor. But if potential genetic risk factor. But if potential genetic risk factor. But if you've got someone, you know, a parent you've got someone, you know, a parent you've got someone, you know, a parent in your household who is callous, in your household who is callous, in your household who is callous, manipulative, impulsive, it's going to manipulative, impulsive, it's going to manipulative, impulsive, it's going to be very difficult to maintain like a be very difficult to maintain like a be very difficult to maintain like a pretty stable home life for that child. pretty stable home life for that child. pretty stable home life for that child. I know that's a that it's a difficult thing to that's a that it's a difficult thing to that's a that it's a difficult thing to say because kids are all different but say because kids are all different but say because kids are all different but >> I mean warm and responsive parenting is >> I mean warm and responsive parenting is >> I mean warm and responsive parenting is it like when you look at treatment for it like when you look at treatment for it like when you look at treatment for kids who are showing early warning signs kids who are showing early warning signs kids who are showing early warning signs of these callous and unemotional traits.

  36. of these callous and unemotional traits. of these callous and unemotional traits. That's the treatment that seems to work. That's the treatment that seems to work. That's the treatment that seems to work. And actually that's kind of like the the And actually that's kind of like the the And actually that's kind of like the the silver lining in this whole, you know, silver lining in this whole, you know, silver lining in this whole, you know, kind of dark research area is that early kind of dark research area is that early kind of dark research area is that early intervention with kids really can help intervention with kids really can help intervention with kids really can help reduce the likelihood of them developing reduce the likelihood of them developing reduce the likelihood of them developing high levels of psychopathic traits as high levels of psychopathic traits as high levels of psychopathic traits as they grow older. And usually it's like they grow older. And usually it's like they grow older. And usually it's like it's training parents uh you know, it's it's training parents uh you know, it's it's training parents uh you know, it's not like a kid comes in and talks to a not like a kid comes in and talks to a not like a kid comes in and talks to a therapist like once a week and then therapist like once a week and then therapist like once a week and then we're good, right? It's it's more we're good, right? It's it's more we're good, right? It's it's more training parents about how to respond in training parents about how to respond in training parents about how to respond in ways that don't like escalate create ways that don't like escalate create ways that don't like escalate create these kind of like dominance contests these kind of like dominance contests these kind of like dominance contests when the kid acts out, but also to when the kid acts out, but also to when the kid acts out, but also to reinforce and kind of model this warm reinforce and kind of model this warm reinforce and kind of model this warm and responsiveness. and responsiveness. and responsiveness. But what's fascinating about uh But what's fascinating about uh But what's fascinating about uh psychopathy and and callous and psychopathy and and callous and psychopathy and and callous and unemotional traits uh in kids is that unemotional traits uh in kids is that unemotional traits uh in kids is that they tend to be not very responsive to they tend to be not very responsive to they tend to be not very responsive to punishment. They're very responsive to punishment. They're very responsive to punishment. They're very responsive to rewards. So if you see kids doing rewards. So if you see kids doing rewards. So if you see kids doing something kind or helpful, something kind or helpful, something kind or helpful, the like parent child interaction the like parent child interaction the like parent child interaction training teaches parents to repeat what training teaches parents to repeat what training teaches parents to repeat what they said. Say that was a very kind they said. Say that was a very kind they said. 37. the likelihood that you see it in the the likelihood that you see it in the future. future. future. >> And so the inverse of that in terms of a >> And so the inverse of that in terms of a >> And so the inverse of that in terms of a bad way to respond to a child that might bad way to respond to a child that might bad way to respond to a child that might lead to some of these dark personality lead to some of these dark personality lead to some of these dark personality traits in the future would be traits in the future would be traits in the future would be >> a cold and unresponsive parenting, >> a cold and unresponsive parenting, >> a cold and unresponsive parenting, getting angry, getting frustrated with getting angry, getting frustrated with getting angry, getting frustrated with them. And but then once it gets to a certain point, then once it gets to a certain point, then once it gets to a certain point, you like give in, right? What that you like give in, right? What that you like give in, right? What that teaches is that you just need to teaches is that you just need to teaches is that you just need to escalate your behavior. you need to escalate your behavior. you need to escalate your behavior. you need to continue to like dominate your parent, continue to like dominate your parent, continue to like dominate your parent, like kick it up a notch, kick it up a like kick it up a notch, kick it up a like kick it up a notch, kick it up a notch, and then at some point you're notch, and then at some point you're notch, and then at some point you're going to win going to win going to win >> as a kid.

That's associated with impulse cortex. That's associated with impulse cortex. That's associated with impulse control. It's also associated with kind control. It's also associated with kind control. It's also associated with kind of moral reasoning, moral thinking. If of moral reasoning, moral thinking. If of moral reasoning, moral thinking. If they're, you know, brains are less they're, you know, brains are less they're, you know, brains are less active during the same moral or impulse active during the same moral or impulse active during the same moral or impulse control task in those regions, this control task in those regions, this control task in those regions, this might help us to explain why they're might help us to explain why they're might help us to explain why they're more likely to behave impulsively to, more likely to behave impulsively to, more likely to behave impulsively to, you know, not be empathetic to other you know, not be empathetic to other you know, not be empathetic to other people. There's also um the amygdala, people. There's also um the amygdala, people. There's also um the amygdala, which I don't think you can see on here, which I don't think you can see on here, which I don't think you can see on here, but and it's on the inside. but and it's on the inside. but and it's on the inside. >> You can open it up. [laughter] >> You can open it up. [laughter] >> You can open it up. [laughter] >> Okay, let's see. So other research on um >> Okay, let's see. So other research on um >> Okay, let's see. So other research on um psychopathy suggests that the amygdala psychopathy suggests that the amygdala psychopathy suggests that the amygdala which is deep within our brain is also which is deep within our brain is also which is deep within our brain is also associated with emotional response associated with emotional response associated with emotional response particularly fear. And so we know that particularly fear. And so we know that particularly fear. And so we know that people with high levels of psychopathy people with high levels of psychopathy people with high levels of psychopathy tend to have they experience pretty low tend to have they experience pretty low tend to have they experience pretty low fear. And they're not very good at like fear. And they're not very good at like fear. And they're not very good at like aversive conditioning, right? So like if aversive conditioning, right? So like if aversive conditioning, right? So like if we get punished for something, we get punished for something, we get punished for something, >> we learn that whenever we we, you know, >> we learn that whenever we we, you know, >> we learn that whenever we we, you know, come up against that stimuli again in come up against that stimuli again in come up against that stimuli again in the future, we're like, "Oh, that turned

  39. the future, we're like, "Oh, that turned the future, we're like, "Oh, that turned out really badly [laughter] last time. out really badly [laughter] last time. out really badly [laughter] last time. I'm going to avoid that." So amydalas in I'm going to avoid that." So amydalas in I'm going to avoid that." So amydalas in people with high levels of psychopathy people with high levels of psychopathy people with high levels of psychopathy tend to be both smaller and less active. tend to be both smaller and less active. tend to be both smaller and less active. So there there is like, you know, brain So there there is like, you know, brain So there there is like, you know, brain differences, neurological differences differences, neurological differences differences, neurological differences between people with high levels and low between people with high levels and low between people with high levels and low levels of psychopathy. So I guess this levels of psychopathy. So I guess this levels of psychopathy. So I guess this begs the question that if someone has begs the question that if someone has begs the question that if someone has those traits you've described or if those traits you've described or if those traits you've described or if they're any one of these four things in they're any one of these four things in they're any one of these four things in this dark triad, these dark personality this dark triad, these dark personality this dark triad, these dark personality traits, can they be cured? So some traits, can they be cured? So some traits, can they be cured? So some change is possible, but I mean [laughter] but I mean [laughter] some some some some being an operative word there. So some being an operative word there. So some being an operative word there. So most of the research we have on on most of the research we have on on most of the research we have on on psychopathy in particular comes from psychopathy in particular comes from psychopathy in particular comes from criminal offenders. So, individuals who criminal offenders. So, individuals who criminal offenders. So, individuals who are incarcerated have to take part in are incarcerated have to take part in are incarcerated have to take part in some treatment uh while they're inside. some treatment uh while they're inside. some treatment uh while they're inside. And the research finds that they're not And the research finds that they're not And the research finds that they're not particularly motivated to change. So, particularly motivated to change. So, particularly motivated to change. So, that's a big problem with like all of that's a big problem with like all of that's a big problem with like all of these things because they don't these things because they don't these things because they don't particularly care about other people and particularly care about other people and particularly care about other people and it tends to be other people that they it tends to be other people that they it tends to be other people that they are hurting with their behavior and so are hurting with their behavior and so are hurting with their behavior and so it's like why would I change? This is it's like why would I change? This is it's like why would I change? This is like a you problem, not a me problem, like a you problem, not a me problem, like a you problem, not a me problem, right? So motivation uh can be difficult right? So motivation uh can be difficult right? So motivation uh can be difficult to come by with this population. But if to come by with this population. But if to come by with this population. But if they do consistently engage in cognitive they do consistently engage in cognitive they do consistently engage in cognitive behavioral therapies, you can reduce the behavioral therapies, you can reduce the behavioral therapies, you can reduce the likelihood of uh recidivism. So the likelihood of uh recidivism. So the likelihood of uh recidivism. So the likelihood that they will reaffend upon

  40. likelihood that they will reaffend upon likelihood that they will reaffend upon release. Again, we're talking about release. Again, we're talking about release. Again, we're talking about incarcerated individuals. When it comes incarcerated individuals. When it comes incarcerated individuals. When it comes to lower levels of these traits, this to lower levels of these traits, this to lower levels of these traits, this really interesting research by Nathan really interesting research by Nathan really interesting research by Nathan Hudson had people do these agreeableness Hudson had people do these agreeableness Hudson had people do these agreeableness challenges. And agreeableness is kind of challenges. And agreeableness is kind of challenges. And agreeableness is kind of like the opposite of [laughter] these like the opposite of [laughter] these like the opposite of [laughter] these traits. So you would just like ping them traits. So you would just like ping them traits. So you would just like ping them on their smartphone every day and would on their smartphone every day and would on their smartphone every day and would say like, "Oh, you should give a say like, "Oh, you should give a say like, "Oh, you should give a compliment to a friend. You should reach compliment to a friend. You should reach compliment to a friend. You should reach out to a friend and just offer them some out to a friend and just offer them some out to a friend and just offer them some encouragement. you should, you know, buy encouragement. you should, you know, buy encouragement. you should, you know, buy coffee for the person behind you in line coffee for the person behind you in line coffee for the person behind you in line at the cafe today. [gasps] These little at the cafe today. [gasps] These little at the cafe today. [gasps] These little things where people were encouraged to things where people were encouraged to things where people were encouraged to be kind, be helpful to other people, to be kind, be helpful to other people, to be kind, be helpful to other people, to see other people's perspectives. see other people's perspectives. see other people's perspectives. And people who actually followed through And people who actually followed through And people who actually followed through on those did report having lower levels on those did report having lower levels on those did report having lower levels of these traits after 4 months than at of these traits after 4 months than at of these traits after 4 months than at the start. And in your book, under the the start. And in your book, under the the start. And in your book, under the section that says hard truths, um, dark section that says hard truths, um, dark section that says hard truths, um, dark personalities persist, you write, personalities persist, you write, personalities persist, you write, "Poisonous people aren't likely to "Poisonous people aren't likely to "Poisonous people aren't likely to change very much. Personality traits are change very much. Personality traits are change very much. Personality traits are by definition enduring. Although some by definition enduring. Although some by definition enduring. Although some evolution of our character happens evolution of our character happens evolution of our character happens naturally, it takes decade. Data naturally, it takes decade. Data naturally, it takes decade. Data suggests that people become a bit more suggests that people become a bit more suggests that people become a bit more agreeable over time, and research with agreeable over time, and research with agreeable over time, and research with incarcerated men finds that even those incarcerated men finds that even those incarcerated men finds that even those with clinical levels of psychopathy are with clinical levels of psychopathy are with clinical levels of psychopathy are less likely to reaffend as they get less likely to reaffend as they get less likely to reaffend as they get older. Even so, waiting it out is likely older. Even so, waiting it out is likely older. Even so, waiting it out is likely to be a painful strategy. One study to be a painful strategy. One study to be a painful strategy. One study asked more than a thousand people who asked more than a thousand people who asked more than a thousand people who knew individual who were psychopathic knew individual who were psychopathic knew individual who were psychopathic for a long time whether their behavior

  41. for a long time whether their behavior for a long time whether their behavior had improved past the age of 50. Almost had improved past the age of 50. Almost had improved past the age of 50. Almost all respondents, 93% all respondents, 93% all respondents, 93% said that as researchers put it, quote, said that as researchers put it, quote, said that as researchers put it, quote, the behavior was just as bad or worse the behavior was just as bad or worse the behavior was just as bad or worse after age 50 than it had been after age 50 than it had been after age 50 than it had been previously. just as bad or worse. previously. just as bad or worse. previously. just as bad or worse. >> I mean, it's their personality, right? >> I mean, it's their personality, right? >> I mean, it's their personality, right? So, it's kind of like asking a tiger to So, it's kind of like asking a tiger to So, it's kind of like asking a tiger to change their stripes. So, if you're not change their stripes. So, if you're not change their stripes. So, if you're not motivated to do it, as we know, people motivated to do it, as we know, people motivated to do it, as we know, people with these traits tend not to be very with these traits tend not to be very with these traits tend not to be very motivated. That's where that, you know, motivated. That's where that, you know, motivated. That's where that, you know, 90ome% of folks come in. It's like 90ome% of folks come in. It's like 90ome% of folks come in. It's like they're not they're not dramatically they're not they're not dramatically they're not they're not dramatically changing unless they find some reason to changing unless they find some reason to changing unless they find some reason to do so. do so. do so. One of the smartest things a business One of the smartest things a business One of the smartest things a business can do is build like a bigger company can do is build like a bigger company can do is build like a bigger company without actually hiring like one. But without actually hiring like one. But without actually hiring like one. But the problem we all face is that most the problem we all face is that most the problem we all face is that most companies don't have every skill in companies don't have every skill in companies don't have every skill in house. What whisper flows notetaker does for me What whisper flows notetaker does for me What whisper flows notetaker does for me is it captures the entire context of is it captures the entire context of is it captures the entire context of everything that's happened throughout my everything that's happened throughout my everything that's happened throughout my entire week. It labels who the people entire week. It labels who the people entire week. It labels who the people are that said what and I can ask it for are that said what and I can ask it for are that said what and I can ask it for things that I might have forgotten for things that I might have forgotten for things that I might have forgotten for actions things that I said I would do actions things that I said I would do actions things that I said I would do that I haven't yet done. It's building that I haven't yet done. It's building that I haven't yet done. It's building this sort of broader context of this sort of broader context of this sort of broader context of everything that's happening in my life. everything that's happening in my life. everything that's happening in my life. And it's an incredible incredible And it's an incredible incredible And it's an incredible incredible superpower. I love the fact that so many superpower. I love the fact that so many superpower. I love the fact that so many of you come up to me in the street of you come up to me in the street of you come up to me in the street because you know I'm an investor in because you know I'm an investor in because you know I'm an investor in Whisper Flow and tell me how much it's Whisper Flow and tell me how much it's Whisper Flow and tell me how much it's changed your life. And once you try it, I think you'll try. And once you try it, I think you'll try. And once you try it, I think you'll realize why we let them sponsor this realize why we let them sponsor this realize why we let them sponsor this podcast. It's amazing. Is there anything podcast. It's amazing. Is there anything podcast. It's amazing. Is there anything else in this bucket that you find else in this bucket that you find else in this bucket that you find interesting? Cuz I know you um you may interesting? Cuz I know you um you may interesting? Cuz I know you um you may or may not be working on a book that or may not be working on a book that or may not be working on a book that really focuses on deception, but is really focuses on deception, but is really focuses on deception, but is there anything else that we haven't there anything else that we haven't there anything else that we haven't covered here that you think is pertinent covered here that you think is pertinent covered here that you think is pertinent or any research that you uncovered that or any research that you uncovered that or any research that you uncovered that was fascinating?

  43. was fascinating? was fascinating? So, in my lab right now, I've become So, in my lab right now, I've become So, in my lab right now, I've become increasingly fascinated with how we increasingly fascinated with how we increasingly fascinated with how we respond to people who are lying to us respond to people who are lying to us respond to people who are lying to us when we're not suspicious at all. Cuz when we're not suspicious at all. Cuz when we're not suspicious at all. Cuz most of the research is like, I give you most of the research is like, I give you most of the research is like, I give you a bunch of videos and I tell you some of a bunch of videos and I tell you some of a bunch of videos and I tell you some of these people are lying, some are telling these people are lying, some are telling these people are lying, some are telling the truth, and you make judgments about the truth, and you make judgments about the truth, and you make judgments about them. But that's not how real life works them. But that's not how real life works them. But that's not how real life works like at all. Right? So, usually we're like at all. Right? So, usually we're like at all. Right? So, usually we're having some sort of interaction with having some sort of interaction with having some sort of interaction with people. No one comes in and says you people. No one comes in and says you people. No one comes in and says you need to judge the veracity of this need to judge the veracity of this need to judge the veracity of this person. We're just having a person. We're just having a person. We're just having a conversation. And so I've been really conversation. And so I've been really conversation. And so I've been really interested in how um conversations interested in how um conversations interested in how um conversations unfold, how interactions unfold when one unfold, how interactions unfold when one unfold, how interactions unfold when one person is lying and the other person is person is lying and the other person is person is lying and the other person is just like none the wiser. And so we keep just like none the wiser. And so we keep just like none the wiser. And so we keep finding these small but consistent finding these small but consistent finding these small but consistent effects that people feel less close to effects that people feel less close to effects that people feel less close to their interaction partner when someone their interaction partner when someone their interaction partner when someone is lying to them. is lying to them. is lying to them. >> Close. Yeah, it's like so we actually >> Close. Yeah, it's like so we actually >> Close. Yeah, it's like so we actually had this study where um we got people to had this study where um we got people to had this study where um we got people to just converse, right? Talk to a just converse, right? Talk to a just converse, right? Talk to a stranger. One person was told to lie in stranger. One person was told to lie in stranger. One person was told to lie in response to everything. The other person response to everything. The other person response to everything. The other person had no idea that was going on. And at had no idea that was going on. And at had no idea that was going on. And at the end of that study, the diads that the end of that study, the diads that the end of that study, the diads that had a liar in them said like, I feel, had a liar in them said like, I feel, had a liar in them said like, I feel, you know, less connected to this other you know, less connected to this other you know, less connected to this other person than diads where both people were person than diads where both people were person than diads where both people were telling the truth. And so we also found telling the truth. And so we also found telling the truth. And so we also found that the more lies that people tell, that the more lies that people tell, that the more lies that people tell, they just, you know, self-report on how they just, you know, self-report on how they just, you know, self-report on how much they lie in their everyday life,

  44. much they lie in their everyday life, much they lie in their everyday life, the more lonely they feel. And so we're the more lonely they feel. And so we're the more lonely they feel. And so we're finding this kind of birectional effect. finding this kind of birectional effect. finding this kind of birectional effect. And and I think often people lie to like And and I think often people lie to like And and I think often people lie to like spare the feelings of others. That's for spare the feelings of others. That's for spare the feelings of others. That's for the average person, not necessarily the average person, not necessarily the average person, not necessarily these traits here, but for the average these traits here, but for the average these traits here, but for the average person, most of the lies that we tell person, most of the lies that we tell person, most of the lies that we tell are pro-social in nature. Like, I tell are pro-social in nature. Like, I tell are pro-social in nature. Like, I tell you a lie because I don't want to hurt you a lie because I don't want to hurt you a lie because I don't want to hurt your feelings, but we are finding that your feelings, but we are finding that your feelings, but we are finding that that actually creates this like social that actually creates this like social that actually creates this like social distance between us as opposed to distance between us as opposed to distance between us as opposed to bringing us closer together. And so, bringing us closer together. And so, bringing us closer together. And so, I've been really interested in just kind I've been really interested in just kind I've been really interested in just kind of like the negative impacts of telling of like the negative impacts of telling of like the negative impacts of telling lies even when we do it for quote lies even when we do it for quote lies even when we do it for quote unquote good reasons. In that you talked unquote good reasons. In that you talked unquote good reasons. In that you talked about how when if we were both sat down about how when if we were both sat down about how when if we were both sat down and you were asked to lie to me, I would and you were asked to lie to me, I would and you were asked to lie to me, I would walk away feeling like I was less close walk away feeling like I was less close walk away feeling like I was less close i.e. slashconnected to you. i.e. slashconnected to you. i.e. slashconnected to you. >> What is it in your in your behavior >> What is it in your in your behavior >> What is it in your in your behavior or in my perception that you think is or in my perception that you think is or in my perception that you think is causing causing causing >> this feeling of disconnection? >> this feeling of disconnection? >> this feeling of disconnection? >> Mhm. So we are finding that people who >> Mhm. So we are finding that people who >> Mhm. So we are finding that people who are lying are perceived as less warm.

  45. are lying are perceived as less warm. are lying are perceived as less warm. They're perceived as less competent. They're perceived as less competent. They're perceived as less competent. They're perceived as less moral. Also, They're perceived as less moral. Also, They're perceived as less moral. Also, if we think about like some of the cues if we think about like some of the cues if we think about like some of the cues to deception that we talked about to deception that we talked about to deception that we talked about earlier, when people give relatively few earlier, when people give relatively few earlier, when people give relatively few details about themselves, conversations details about themselves, conversations details about themselves, conversations are based on this reciprocal exchange, are based on this reciprocal exchange, are based on this reciprocal exchange, right? Like I tell you something about right? Like I tell you something about right? Like I tell you something about myself, you tell me something about myself, you tell me something about myself, you tell me something about yourself. And like we start to know each yourself. And like we start to know each yourself. And like we start to know each other, right? other, right? other, right? >> And so if you've got someone who's lying >> And so if you've got someone who's lying >> And so if you've got someone who's lying to you, they're giving you less to you, they're giving you less to you, they're giving you less information about themselves, for information about themselves, for information about themselves, for example. And so I don't feel like I know example. And so I don't feel like I know example. And so I don't feel like I know you at the end of our conversation. Even you at the end of our conversation. Even you at the end of our conversation. Even though I'm not like actively suspicious though I'm not like actively suspicious though I'm not like actively suspicious that you're lying to me about your likes that you're lying to me about your likes that you're lying to me about your likes and your interests and what you did on and your interests and what you did on and your interests and what you did on Friday afternoon, it comes across Friday afternoon, it comes across Friday afternoon, it comes across because you gave me less information and because you gave me less information and because you gave me less information and maybe I think he didn't really want to maybe I think he didn't really want to maybe I think he didn't really want to talk to me. talk to me. talk to me. >> I mean, I'm so fascinated by this the >> I mean, I'm so fascinated by this the >> I mean, I'm so fascinated by this the fact that you have a lab that tests this fact that you have a lab that tests this fact that you have a lab that tests this stuff. stuff. stuff. >> What are some of the fascinating >> What are some of the fascinating >> What are some of the fascinating questions you've gone in search of questions you've gone in search of questions you've gone in search of answers for in your lab? answers for in your lab? answers for in your lab? One that I love is um how much sympathy One that I love is um how much sympathy One that I love is um how much sympathy people feel for people feel for people feel for individuals who are lying or telling the individuals who are lying or telling the individuals who are lying or telling the truth about how sad they are. So like truth about how sad they are. So like truth about how sad they are. So like think back to the pleaders, right, that think back to the pleaders, right, that think back to the pleaders, right, that we talked about. If you look at this we talked about. If you look at this we talked about. If you look at this face, right, versus this face, like how face, right, versus this face, like how face, right, versus this face, like how much empathy do you have for that much empathy do you have for that much empathy do you have for that person? How sad do you feel? How willing person? How sad do you feel? How willing person? How sad do you feel? How willing are you to donate money to whatever are you to donate money to whatever are you to donate money to whatever cause they're looking for? So like we cause they're looking for? So like we cause they're looking for? So like we studied this with studied this with studied this with the pleaders that we talked about. So

  46. the pleaders that we talked about. So the pleaders that we talked about. So people who went on TV and asked for help people who went on TV and asked for help people who went on TV and asked for help trying to find their missing loved one, trying to find their missing loved one, trying to find their missing loved one, half of whom were actually responsible half of whom were actually responsible half of whom were actually responsible for killing that person they pleaded to for killing that person they pleaded to for killing that person they pleaded to find. And we showed people again, they find. And we showed people again, they find. And we showed people again, they weren't aware that some of these folks weren't aware that some of these folks weren't aware that some of these folks were lying and some were telling the were lying and some were telling the were lying and some were telling the truth. But we showed them these videos truth. But we showed them these videos truth. But we showed them these videos and we said, "How much sympathy do you and we said, "How much sympathy do you and we said, "How much sympathy do you feel for this person who's asking for feel for this person who's asking for feel for this person who's asking for help trying to find the missing help trying to find the missing help trying to find the missing individual? And how much money would you individual? And how much money would you individual? And how much money would you donate to a theoretical GoFundMe that donate to a theoretical GoFundMe that donate to a theoretical GoFundMe that would like help support the search for would like help support the search for would like help support the search for this missing person?" And we find really this missing person?" And we find really this missing person?" And we find really consistently that people are more consistently that people are more consistently that people are more willing to donate money to the genuine willing to donate money to the genuine willing to donate money to the genuine pleaders relative to the deceptive ones. pleaders relative to the deceptive ones. pleaders relative to the deceptive ones. and they feel more kind of sympathy and and they feel more kind of sympathy and and they feel more kind of sympathy and compassion for them even though they're compassion for them even though they're compassion for them even though they're not, you know, they don't know that some not, you know, they don't know that some not, you know, they don't know that some of these folks are actually like of these folks are actually like of these folks are actually like deceptive murderers. And the effects are deceptive murderers. And the effects are deceptive murderers. And the effects are like, you know, not gigantic, but it like, you know, not gigantic, but it like, you know, not gigantic, but it does suggest that like we're not does suggest that like we're not does suggest that like we're not completely clueless moving through the completely clueless moving through the completely clueless moving through the world. But when we reduce it to a simple world. But when we reduce it to a simple world. But when we reduce it to a simple binary, is this person lying or telling binary, is this person lying or telling binary, is this person lying or telling the truth?

  47. the truth? the truth? >> We lose a lot of kind of like the nuance >> We lose a lot of kind of like the nuance >> We lose a lot of kind of like the nuance of how we move through our relationships of how we move through our relationships of how we move through our relationships and like, oh, I'm feeling kind of close and like, oh, I'm feeling kind of close and like, oh, I'm feeling kind of close to this person, closer to that person. to this person, closer to that person. to this person, closer to that person. I'm willing to help this person more I'm willing to help this person more I'm willing to help this person more than that person. Yeah. So, those are than that person. Yeah. So, those are than that person. Yeah. So, those are the kinds of things I've been interested the kinds of things I've been interested the kinds of things I've been interested in. One of the things I spoke to Vanessa in. One of the things I spoke to Vanessa in. One of the things I spoke to Vanessa Van Edwards on this podcast a few times Van Edwards on this podcast a few times Van Edwards on this podcast a few times and she she does a lot of stuff around and she she does a lot of stuff around and she she does a lot of stuff around like body language and how you show up like body language and how you show up like body language and how you show up and she talks about warmth and and she talks about warmth and and she talks about warmth and competence. competence. competence. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And how some people can overindex on >> And how some people can overindex on >> And how some people can overindex on warmth and maybe that brings them down warmth and maybe that brings them down warmth and maybe that brings them down on competence or they can overindex on on competence or they can overindex on on competence or they can overindex on competence but be less warm. Wanted to competence but be less warm. Wanted to competence but be less warm. Wanted to know if you had a perspective on this know if you had a perspective on this know if you had a perspective on this like how like through your research and like how like through your research and like how like through your research and through all the studies you've done through all the studies you've done through all the studies you've done can you be warm and competent at the can you be warm and competent at the can you be warm and competent at the same time or is is there a bit of a same time or is is there a bit of a same time or is is there a bit of a trade-off? And like what even you used trade-off? And like what even you used trade-off? And like what even you used the word warmth a second ago. What is it the word warmth a second ago. What is it the word warmth a second ago. What is it to be a warm person? Is it to be like to be a warm person? Is it to be like to be a warm person? Is it to be like how is it like you know like how is it like you know like how is it like you know like >> No, it's like it is the sense that >> No, it's like it is the sense that >> No, it's like it is the sense that someone is kind and honest and someone is kind and honest and someone is kind and honest and trustworthy. It is your benevolent trustworthy. It is your benevolent trustworthy. It is your benevolent intentions toward another person. Right?

  48. intentions toward another person. Right? intentions toward another person. Right? So, we trust people to the extent that So, we trust people to the extent that So, we trust people to the extent that they are both warm and competent in this they are both warm and competent in this they are both warm and competent in this in the sense that like in the sense that like in the sense that like >> I'm going to trust you if I think you >> I'm going to trust you if I think you >> I'm going to trust you if I think you have benevolent intentions for me that I have benevolent intentions for me that I have benevolent intentions for me that I think you you like want to be kind to me think you you like want to be kind to me think you you like want to be kind to me >> but also if I think you can actually >> but also if I think you can actually >> but also if I think you can actually execute on that thing like do you have execute on that thing like do you have execute on that thing like do you have the competence the ability to actually the competence the ability to actually the competence the ability to actually you know do that thing make that you know do that thing make that you know do that thing make that connection for me at work right it's connection for me at work right it's connection for me at work right it's like if you are just warm but like like if you are just warm but like like if you are just warm but like you've got no you don't have like the you've got no you don't have like the you've got no you don't have like the the ability to to back it up, then we the ability to to back it up, then we the ability to to back it up, then we tend to trust those individuals less. So tend to trust those individuals less. So tend to trust those individuals less. So this warmth, high warmth, high this warmth, high warmth, high this warmth, high warmth, high competence tends to be associated with competence tends to be associated with competence tends to be associated with high trustworthiness. high trustworthiness. high trustworthiness. >> And does high warmth come with certain >> And does high warmth come with certain >> And does high warmth come with certain behaviors? behaviors? behaviors? >> Yeah. So when we have very little information when we have very little information when we have very little information about a person, we're just trying to about a person, we're just trying to about a person, we're just trying to pick up on anything right in their in pick up on anything right in their in pick up on anything right in their in their body language, their non-verbal their body language, their non-verbal their body language, their non-verbal behavior to try to make an assessment of behavior to try to make an assessment of behavior to try to make an assessment of them. And I was kind of bummed out thinking about murder all the bummed out thinking about murder all the bummed out thinking about murder all the time. I was like, I really love these time. I was like, I really love these time. I was like, I really love these topics, but I got to I got to go topics, but I got to I got to go topics, but I got to I got to go somewhere else and like think about this somewhere else and like think about this somewhere else and like think about this in a different context. It was shortly in a different context. It was shortly in a different context. It was shortly after like the Bernie Maidoff Ponzi after like the Bernie Maidoff Ponzi after like the Bernie Maidoff Ponzi scheme kind of fell apart. And I was scheme kind of fell apart. And I was scheme kind of fell apart. And I was like, oh, maybe like business school, like, oh, maybe like business school, like, oh, maybe like business school, like I could go to a different context like I could go to a different context like I could go to a different context and study these same like personality and study these same like personality and study these same like personality traits just in a different area. And I traits just in a different area. And I traits just in a different area. And I was also interested in like this notion was also interested in like this notion was also interested in like this notion of uh successful psychopathy because

  50. of uh successful psychopathy because of uh successful psychopathy because like since really early descriptions of like since really early descriptions of like since really early descriptions of psychopathy, there's been this psychopathy, there's been this psychopathy, there's been this suggestion that these traits can suggestion that these traits can suggestion that these traits can actually help you to succeed, right? And actually help you to succeed, right? And actually help you to succeed, right? And I often hear that from people where I often hear that from people where I often hear that from people where they're like, they're like, they're like, "Yeah, like that's terrible behavior, "Yeah, like that's terrible behavior, "Yeah, like that's terrible behavior, but like you know, sometimes that helps, but like you know, sometimes that helps, but like you know, sometimes that helps, right?" And I'm like, "Does it like right?" And I'm like, "Does it like right?" And I'm like, "Does it like what's what does the data say on that?" what's what does the data say on that?" what's what does the data say on that?" And so I work with um Derer Kelner and And so I work with um Derer Kelner and And so I work with um Derer Kelner and >> Dak has been here as well. >> Dak has been here as well. >> Dak has been here as well. >> Has he? >> Has he? >> Has he? >> Yeah, >> Yeah, >> Yeah, >> I love him. He's so wonderful. I love >> I love him. He's so wonderful. I love >> I love him. He's so wonderful. I love him. And so we studied, you know, the him. And so we studied, you know, the him. And so we studied, you know, the extent to which psychopathic personality extent to which psychopathic personality extent to which psychopathic personality traits could increase the amount of traits could increase the amount of traits could increase the amount of influence you have in government and influence you have in government and influence you have in government and also the amount of money that you make also the amount of money that you make also the amount of money that you make as a hedge fund manager. Those are kind as a hedge fund manager. Those are kind as a hedge fund manager. Those are kind of the two cont because I was like these of the two cont because I was like these of the two cont because I was like these hyper competitive contexts, right, hyper competitive contexts, right, hyper competitive contexts, right, where maybe in government you can kind where maybe in government you can kind where maybe in government you can kind of like backstab and backroom deals and of like backstab and backroom deals and of like backstab and backroom deals and whatever. They might be able you might whatever. They might be able you might whatever. They might be able you might be able to get lots of co-sponsors on be able to get lots of co-sponsors on be able to get lots of co-sponsors on your bills if you're using kind of these your bills if you're using kind of these your bills if you're using kind of these backroom tactics. And then I thought backroom tactics. And then I thought backroom tactics. And then I thought with respect to money, maybe you're with respect to money, maybe you're with respect to money, maybe you're willing to take more risks, right?

  51. willing to take more risks, right? willing to take more risks, right? You're willing to cut people or You're willing to cut people or You're willing to cut people or companies down in public. you're not so companies down in public. you're not so companies down in public. you're not so worried about hurting other people. So worried about hurting other people. So worried about hurting other people. So I of course was like these are I of course was like these are I of course was like these are situations where people with high levels situations where people with high levels situations where people with high levels of psychopathy can shine. Derer was like of psychopathy can shine. Derer was like of psychopathy can shine. Derer was like no [laughter] it won't be. So we were no [laughter] it won't be. So we were no [laughter] it won't be. So we were kind of pitting these like good versus kind of pitting these like good versus kind of pitting these like good versus evil concepts against each other and evil concepts against each other and evil concepts against each other and consistently we found that high levels consistently we found that high levels consistently we found that high levels of psychopathy was associated with less of psychopathy was associated with less of psychopathy was associated with less influence in government. It was also influence in government. It was also influence in government. It was also associated with making less money as a associated with making less money as a associated with making less money as a hedge fund manager whereas it's very hedge fund manager whereas it's very hedge fund manager whereas it's very like counterintuitive like counterintuitive like counterintuitive I think to people. I think to people. I think to people. >> What about some of these other ones like >> What about some of these other ones like >> What about some of these other ones like narcissism and machavel? What about narcissism and machavel? What about narcissism and machavel? What about those ones? those ones? those ones? >> So it really depends on like how you >> So it really depends on like how you >> So it really depends on like how you define success. So there is some define success. So there is some define success. So there is some research to suggest that narcissism, research to suggest that narcissism, research to suggest that narcissism, machavelianism can be associated with machavelianism can be associated with machavelianism can be associated with kind of rising up in ranks, maybe having kind of rising up in ranks, maybe having kind of rising up in ranks, maybe having a higher salary level, but a higher salary level, but a higher salary level, but they're not associated with like teams they're not associated with like teams they're not associated with like teams doing great, right? And honestly, most doing great, right? And honestly, most doing great, right? And honestly, most of the research is is on um psychopathy.

  52. of the research is is on um psychopathy. of the research is is on um psychopathy. the the work that I'm interested in is the the work that I'm interested in is the the work that I'm interested in is that people with high levels of that people with high levels of that people with high levels of psychopathy, they talk a really good psychopathy, they talk a really good psychopathy, they talk a really good game and they make people think that game and they make people think that game and they make people think that they're a great like tactical they're a great like tactical they're a great like tactical communicator. They're very strategic communicator. They're very strategic communicator. They're very strategic thinkers. But if you actually ask them thinkers. But if you actually ask them thinkers. But if you actually ask them like how good are they at their job, like how good are they at their job, like how good are they at their job, they say they're they're a terrible they say they're they're a terrible they say they're they're a terrible manager. They tend to bully their manager. They tend to bully their manager. They tend to bully their subordinates. They create a huge amount subordinates. They create a huge amount subordinates. They create a huge amount of stress for other people on their of stress for other people on their of stress for other people on their team. Um and their teams have worse team. Um and their teams have worse team. Um and their teams have worse outcomes because of it. So, when you're outcomes because of it. So, when you're outcomes because of it. So, when you're talking about team performance, you're talking about team performance, you're talking about team performance, you're saying narcissists typically aren't good saying narcissists typically aren't good saying narcissists typically aren't good at leading teams over the long term, at leading teams over the long term, at leading teams over the long term, >> they tend to come across as like >> they tend to come across as like >> they tend to come across as like leadership material early on. And leadership material early on. And leadership material early on. And there's this one study by um Dell Paul there's this one study by um Dell Paul there's this one study by um Dell Paul House which shows this quite nicely is House which shows this quite nicely is House which shows this quite nicely is like they had these student groups and like they had these student groups and like they had these student groups and they would work together throughout the they would work together throughout the they would work together throughout the term. After the first meeting, they all term. After the first meeting, they all term. After the first meeting, they all made judgments about each other, how made judgments about each other, how made judgments about each other, how likable they were, etc., etc., whether likable they were, etc., etc., whether likable they were, etc., etc., whether they seemed, you know, confident and they seemed, you know, confident and they seemed, you know, confident and smart and, you know, agreeable. The smart and, you know, agreeable. The smart and, you know, agreeable. The people who were high in narcissism people who were high in narcissism people who were high in narcissism came across really well in that first came across really well in that first came across really well in that first interaction. Like they said they they interaction. Like they said they they interaction. Like they said they they knew what they were doing. They came knew what they were doing. They came knew what they were doing. They came across very confident. They seemed like across very confident. They seemed like across very confident. They seemed like they could lead. They wanted to lead, they could lead. They wanted to lead, they could lead. They wanted to lead, but then as the course of the the term but then as the course of the the term but then as the course of the the term went by, people were like, "This person went by, people were like, "This person went by, people were like, "This person is actually really hostile and like is actually really hostile and like is actually really hostile and like doesn't do their work and they're a pain doesn't do their work and they're a pain doesn't do their work and they're a pain in the butt." So in the butt." So in the butt." So certainly the you know the thing that certainly the you know the thing that certainly the you know the thing that can make narcissism look good at the

  53. can make narcissism look good at the can make narcissism look good at the outset is our confusion of confidence outset is our confusion of confidence outset is our confusion of confidence and competence. So when someone says and competence. So when someone says and competence. So when someone says they can do something and they say it they can do something and they say it they can do something and they say it very confidently, we're like, "Oh, they very confidently, we're like, "Oh, they very confidently, we're like, "Oh, they got this." Right? But that's not the got this." Right? But that's not the got this." Right? But that's not the same thing as actually being able to do same thing as actually being able to do same thing as actually being able to do it. There's often like an assumption it. There's often like an assumption it. There's often like an assumption that people that are actors or have that people that are actors or have that people that are actors or have certain roles where they're on stage certain roles where they're on stage certain roles where they're on stage performing have higher levels of some of performing have higher levels of some of performing have higher levels of some of these things. Is that is there any truth these things. Is that is there any truth these things. Is that is there any truth to that at all? to that at all? to that at all? >> Not to my knowledge. Although >> Not to my knowledge. Although >> Not to my knowledge. Although so I think where it would mostly so I think where it would mostly so I think where it would mostly intersect is like if you have any intersect is like if you have any intersect is like if you have any training in like the Stanislavski training in like the Stanislavski training in like the Stanislavski technique which is like trying to technique which is like trying to technique which is like trying to experience an emotion. Like if I need to experience an emotion. Like if I need to experience an emotion. Like if I need to portray an emotion to you, I want to portray an emotion to you, I want to portray an emotion to you, I want to come across as genuinely sad in this come across as genuinely sad in this come across as genuinely sad in this scene or whatever, I might recall a time scene or whatever, I might recall a time scene or whatever, I might recall a time in which I genuinely felt sad to try to in which I genuinely felt sad to try to in which I genuinely felt sad to try to like bring that emotion up as opposed to like bring that emotion up as opposed to like bring that emotion up as opposed to like trying to fake it. I try to like trying to fake it. I try to like trying to fake it. I try to actually feel it. So that kind of actually feel it. So that kind of actually feel it. So that kind of training might help you to like, you training might help you to like, you training might help you to like, you know, mimic some emotions. But to I know, mimic some emotions. But to I know, mimic some emotions. But to I don't know of any research that would don't know of any research that would don't know of any research that would suggest that actors would be higher in suggest that actors would be higher in suggest that actors would be higher in these traits or not. Savvy meaning like they're talker. Savvy meaning like they're talker. Savvy meaning like they're they're controlling you. They're maybe they're controlling you. They're maybe they're controlling you. They're maybe using information to get you to do what using information to get you to do what using information to get you to do what they want. Strategic, right? We talked they want. And one of the want to accomplish. And one of the want to accomplish. And one of the things I've learned is that when you aim things I've learned is that when you aim things I've learned is that when you aim at the big big big goal, it can feel at the big big big goal, it can feel at the big big big goal, it can feel incredibly psychologically uncomfortable incredibly psychologically uncomfortable incredibly psychologically uncomfortable because it's kind of like being stood at because it's kind of like being stood at because it's kind of like being stood at the foot of Mount Everest and looking the foot of Mount Everest and looking the foot of Mount Everest and looking upwards. Uh and the second thing is that Uh and the second thing is that Uh and the second thing is that according to your book and some of the according to your book and some of the according to your book and some of the research, people don't tend to change. research, people don't tend to change. research, people don't tend to change. So this leads me to the conclusion that So this leads me to the conclusion that So this leads me to the conclusion that we might have to figure out how to deal we might have to figure out how to deal we might have to figure out how to deal with these people because if we work in with these people because if we work in with these people because if we work in a company or a team or even if we work a company or a team or even if we work a company or a team or even if we work in a family, if I look at some of those in a family, if I look at some of those in a family, if I look at some of those stats around antisocial personality stats around antisocial personality stats around antisocial personality behaviors, behaviors, behaviors, >> it would suggest roughly one in five >> it would suggest roughly one in five >> it would suggest roughly one in five people are going to be antisocial in people are going to be antisocial in people are going to be antisocial in some way.

  62. some way. some way. >> So we can't just hope to avoid them in >> So we can't just hope to avoid them in >> So we can't just hope to avoid them in our lives. our lives. our lives. >> No, you're I mean everyone's got a >> No, you're I mean everyone's got a >> No, you're I mean everyone's got a story, I think. And I think people feel story, I think. And I think people feel story, I think. And I think people feel relatively powerless like because the relatively powerless like because the relatively powerless like because the approaches that we tend to take with approaches that we tend to take with approaches that we tend to take with other people when they hurt us don't other people when they hurt us don't other people when they hurt us don't work very well for these individuals. work very well for these individuals. work very well for these individuals. Like when someone hurts us, we might be Like when someone hurts us, we might be Like when someone hurts us, we might be like we show them, we tell them that like we show them, we tell them that like we show them, we tell them that really hurt me and then they feel guilt really hurt me and then they feel guilt really hurt me and then they feel guilt and they might apologize, right? Or we and they might apologize, right? Or we and they might apologize, right? Or we might punish them in some way and then might punish them in some way and then might punish them in some way and then that leads them to avoid that behavior that leads them to avoid that behavior that leads them to avoid that behavior in the future. These are precisely in the future. These are precisely in the future. These are precisely things that people with psychopathy, for things that people with psychopathy, for things that people with psychopathy, for example, like doesn't really work, example, like doesn't really work, example, like doesn't really work, right? And so we're left being like, how right? And so we're left being like, how right? And so we're left being like, how do I deal with this? Like my tools are do I deal with this? Like my tools are do I deal with this? Like my tools are not working. But I think what's really not working. But I think what's really not working. But I think what's really kind of powerful to know is that there kind of powerful to know is that there kind of powerful to know is that there are things that you can do. So we've got are things that you can do. So we've got are things that you can do. So we've got seven rules for dealing with people with seven rules for dealing with people with seven rules for dealing with people with dark personalities. So the first one is dark personalities. So the first one is dark personalities. So the first one is to establish clear boundaries. And I to establish clear boundaries. And I to establish clear boundaries. And I want to kind of preface this by saying want to kind of preface this by saying want to kind of preface this by saying like setting out the rules is not like a like setting out the rules is not like a like setting out the rules is not like a guarantee that they won't be broken.

  63. guarantee that they won't be broken. guarantee that they won't be broken. Right? We've talked about with respect Right? We've talked about with respect Right? We've talked about with respect to psychopathy that they tend to break to psychopathy that they tend to break to psychopathy that they tend to break the rules. That's like a defining the rules. That's like a defining the rules. That's like a defining feature of that personality. feature of that personality. feature of that personality. [sighs and gasps] [sighs and gasps] [sighs and gasps] But research suggests that establishing But research suggests that establishing But research suggests that establishing clear rules, making them explicit clear rules, making them explicit clear rules, making them explicit decreases the likelihood of kind of decreases the likelihood of kind of decreases the likelihood of kind of selfish behavior, for example, selfish behavior, for example, selfish behavior, for example, compared to if there's no rules compared to if there's no rules compared to if there's no rules whatsoever. Right. whatsoever. Right. whatsoever. Right. >> Okay. So sometimes like you know in my >> Okay. So sometimes like you know in my >> Okay. One is respectable workplace policy. One is respectable workplace policy. One is that it makes very explicit how we that it makes very explicit how we that it makes very explicit how we expect people to be treated here. that expect people to be treated here. that expect people to be treated here. that is going to decrease the likelihood of is going to decrease the likelihood of is going to decrease the likelihood of people even with with you know kind of people even with with you know kind of people even with with you know kind of moderate levels of these traits let's moderate levels of these traits let's moderate levels of these traits let's say will violate those rules and more say will violate those rules and more say will violate those rules and more than that if they do violate the rules than that if they do violate the rules than that if they do violate the rules you've got you've got something written you've got you've got something written you've got you've got something written down that's like you're not supposed to down that's like you're not supposed to down that's like you're not supposed to do this otherwise it's very hard to kind do this otherwise it's very hard to kind do this otherwise it's very hard to kind of do anything about it right in a of do anything about it right in a of do anything about it right in a relationship you can make this really relationship you can make this really relationship you can make this really clear like what's okay what's not okay clear like what's okay what's not okay clear like what's okay what's not okay in this relationship and you got to tell in this relationship and you got to tell in this relationship and you got to tell the other person that it can't just be the other person that it can't just be the other person that it can't just be in your head right so you got to make in your head right so you got to make in your head right so you got to make these rules um explicit and it can also these rules um explicit and it can also these rules um explicit and it can also help to like read in a buddy like if help to like read in a buddy like if help to like read in a buddy like if you've got a friend and you're like okay you've got a friend and you're like okay you've got a friend and you're like okay these are the things that I want out of these are the things that I want out of these are the things that I want out of a relationship partner these are like no a relationship partner these are like no a relationship partner these are like no goes these are behaviors that cross the goes these are behaviors that cross the goes these are behaviors that cross the red line red line red line having you know a friend that knows what

  65. boundaryless targets? boundaryless targets? >> Is that does that hold as truth or or is >> Is that does that hold as truth or or is >> Is that does that hold as truth or or is that just anecdotal? that just anecdotal? that just anecdotal? >> So we do know from research that this is >> So we do know from research that this is >> So we do know from research that this is mostly in workplaces that workplaces mostly in workplaces that workplaces mostly in workplaces that workplaces that have kind of codes of fairness, that have kind of codes of fairness, that have kind of codes of fairness, people with high levels of these traits people with high levels of these traits people with high levels of these traits are less likely to, you know, keep a are less likely to, you know, keep a are less likely to, you know, keep a bunch of the bonus money for themselves bunch of the bonus money for themselves bunch of the bonus money for themselves instead of share it among their team instead of share it among their team instead of share it among their team fairly. So there's evidence of like having rules in place increases the having rules in place increases the having rules in place increases the likelihood that they will follow those likelihood that they will follow those likelihood that they will follow those rules relative to like a no holds bar rules relative to like a no holds bar rules relative to like a no holds bar kind of situation. kind of situation. kind of situation. >> There's also research on uh you know how >> There's also research on uh you know how >> There's also research on uh you know how people with high levels of psychopathic people with high levels of psychopathic people with high levels of psychopathic traits kind of choose who to traits kind of choose who to traits kind of choose who to who to prey upon essentially. And who to prey upon essentially. And who to prey upon essentially. And individuals who are not very assertive individuals who are not very assertive individuals who are not very assertive um tend to be more likely to, you know, um tend to be more likely to, you know, um tend to be more likely to, you know, kind of it's almost like they're like kind of it's almost like they're like kind of it's almost like they're like picking, you know, the weakest of the picking, you know, the weakest of the picking, you know, the weakest of the herd or something like that. So having herd or something like that. So having herd or something like that. So having asserting asserting some boundaries can asserting asserting some boundaries can asserting asserting some boundaries can help to, you know, not have that target help to, you know, not have that target help to, you know, not have that target on your back. I was thinking about a on your back. I was thinking about a on your back. I was thinking about a guest that I interviewed on this podcast guest that I interviewed on this podcast guest that I interviewed on this podcast that was telling me she had gone through that was telling me she had gone through that was telling me she had gone through domestic violence and she um was telling domestic violence and she um was telling domestic violence and she um was telling me about like the love bombing process me about like the love bombing process me about like the love bombing process as to how this individual had like as to how this individual had like as to how this individual had like broken down her boundaries and her broken down her boundaries and her broken down her boundaries and her confidence over time confidence over time confidence over time >> and then had isolated her from her >> and then had isolated her from her >> and then had isolated her from her friends and family wouldn't allow her to friends and family wouldn't allow her to friends and family wouldn't allow her to call her mom would give her a script call her mom would give her a script call her mom would give her a script when her mom called and those kinds of when her mom called and those kinds of when her mom called and those kinds of things. And one of the the remarkable things. And one of the the remarkable things. And one of the the remarkable things I observed is how over time things I observed is how over time things I observed is how over time they'd sort of broken down their they'd sort of broken down their they'd sort of broken down their confidence

  66. confidence confidence >> in order to be able to seemingly control >> in order to be able to seemingly control >> in order to be able to seemingly control them. them. them. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> Is this a is this common practice? >> Is this a is this common practice? >> Is this a is this common practice? >> Uh yeah, in in domestic >> Uh yeah, in in domestic >> Uh yeah, in in domestic violence situation. You know, it kind of violence situation. You know, it kind of violence situation. You know, it kind of reminds me of the the kind of emerging reminds me of the the kind of emerging reminds me of the the kind of emerging research on gaslighting where someone research on gaslighting where someone research on gaslighting where someone would, would, would, you know, make make their partner kind you know, make make their partner kind you know, make make their partner kind of doubt their sense of reality. Uh kind of doubt their sense of reality. Uh kind of doubt their sense of reality. Uh kind of, you know, correcting them all the of, you know, correcting them all the of, you know, correcting them all the time like you're being too sensitive. time like you're being too sensitive. time like you're being too sensitive. You don't see the truth around you. And You don't see the truth around you. And You don't see the truth around you. And I think what's kind of so um insidious I think what's kind of so um insidious I think what's kind of so um insidious about that is that it makes you about that is that it makes you about that is that it makes you dependent on that other person. And then dependent on that other person. And then dependent on that other person. And then the isolation can really decrease the the isolation can really decrease the the isolation can really decrease the your ability to kind of like get out of your ability to kind of like get out of your ability to kind of like get out of it because you don't have someone else it because you don't have someone else it because you don't have someone else who can, you know, check your sense of who can, you know, check your sense of who can, you know, check your sense of reality that you really are seeing and reality that you really are seeing and reality that you really are seeing and feeling and remembering things that feeling and remembering things that feeling and remembering things that really did happen even though they're really did happen even though they're really did happen even though they're telling you that it didn't. telling you that it didn't. telling you that it didn't. >> What is gaslighting? Cuz we we throw >> What is gaslighting? Cuz we we throw >> What is gaslighting? Cuz we we throw around the term all the time. The minute around the term all the time. The minute around the term all the time. The minute someone lies, we say, "You're someone lies, we say, "You're someone lies, we say, "You're gaslighting me."

  67. gaslighting me." gaslighting me." >> Yeah. It's a a pattern of denying >> Yeah. It's a a pattern of denying >> Yeah. It's a a pattern of denying someone's version of reality. So you someone's version of reality. So you someone's version of reality. So you might tell people that, you know, they might tell people that, you know, they might tell people that, you know, they shouldn't be feeling the way that shouldn't be feeling the way that shouldn't be feeling the way that they're feeling. Things didn't happen they're feeling. Things didn't happen they're feeling. Things didn't happen like they are remembering they happened. like they are remembering they happened. like they are remembering they happened. That they can't trust their own, you That they can't trust their own, you That they can't trust their own, you know, sense of, you know, perception of know, sense of, you know, perception of know, sense of, you know, perception of reality. And so it can be incredibly reality. And so it can be incredibly reality. And so it can be incredibly kind of destabilizing and isolating. And kind of destabilizing and isolating. And kind of destabilizing and isolating. And what is worrisome about that is that we what is worrisome about that is that we what is worrisome about that is that we really need other people to help us see really need other people to help us see really need other people to help us see reality. And so if we we're only seeing reality. And so if we we're only seeing reality. And so if we we're only seeing it through like their lens of we can't it through like their lens of we can't it through like their lens of we can't be trusted, our own eyes, our own memory be trusted, our own eyes, our own memory be trusted, our own eyes, our own memory can't be trusted, we start to depend on can't be trusted, we start to depend on can't be trusted, we start to depend on their perception, which is essentially a their perception, which is essentially a their perception, which is essentially a a control tactic. And research does a control tactic. And research does a control tactic. And research does suggest that people with high levels of suggest that people with high levels of suggest that people with high levels of these traits endorse these tact. They these traits endorse these tact. They these traits endorse these tact. They like they don't see anything wrong with like they don't see anything wrong with like they don't see anything wrong with doing that to a romantic partner, which doing that to a romantic partner, which doing that to a romantic partner, which would probably follow um that they would would probably follow um that they would would probably follow um that they would be more likely to engage in it. A lot of be more likely to engage in it. A lot of be more likely to engage in it. A lot of romantic arguments would sound like romantic arguments would sound like romantic arguments would sound like gaslighting. I think within that gaslighting. I think within that gaslighting. I think within that definition of like, you know, let's go definition of like, you know, let's go definition of like, you know, let's go back to the cheating example. We said back to the cheating example. We said back to the cheating example. We said last Friday, I was doing something last Friday, I was doing something last Friday, I was doing something dodgy.

  68. dodgy. dodgy. >> You suspect I'm lying. So, you say to >> You suspect I'm lying. So, you say to >> You suspect I'm lying. So, you say to me, "No, you weren't, Steven. I say like, you know, I feel insecure. I feel threatened by like whatever you feel threatened by like whatever you feel threatened by like whatever you were doing on Friday and you're like, were doing on Friday and you're like, were doing on Friday and you're like, no, you don't. You don't like or you no, you don't. You don't like or you no, you don't. You don't like or you shouldn't feel that way. There there's shouldn't feel that way. There there's shouldn't feel that way. There there's no reason for you to feel that way. no reason for you to feel that way. no reason for you to feel that way. You're blowing things out of proportion. You're blowing things out of proportion. You're blowing things out of proportion. It's essentially like denying someone's It's essentially like denying someone's It's essentially like denying someone's actual my experience is that I feel actual my experience is that I feel actual my experience is that I feel threatened. And so it's like even if I threatened. And so it's like even if I threatened. And so it's like even if I might be wrong about that, that is my might be wrong about that, that is my might be wrong about that, that is my experience. experience. experience. >> So I could deny the facts theoretically. >> So I could deny the facts theoretically. >> So I could deny the facts theoretically. I could say no, at 2 a.m. I was, I could say no, at 2 a.m. I was, I could say no, at 2 a.m. I was, >> you know, falling asleep on my desk.

  69. >> you know, falling asleep on my desk. >> you know, falling asleep on my desk. >> I could maybe argue with the facts, but >> I could maybe argue with the facts, but >> I could maybe argue with the facts, but it's when you start arguing with someone it's when you start arguing with someone it's when you start arguing with someone else's perception of reality, else's perception of reality, else's perception of reality, >> yes, >> yes, >> yes, >> of their own subjective experience, >> of their own subjective experience, >> of their own subjective experience, that's when you stray into this that's when you stray into this that's when you stray into this gaslighting. Okay. gaslighting. Okay. gaslighting. Okay. In the example I gave earlier from my In the example I gave earlier from my In the example I gave earlier from my guest, that's exactly what happened to guest, that's exactly what happened to guest, that's exactly what happened to her. What he started to do is he started her. What he started to do is he started her. What he started to do is he started hiding her stuff in places. So he put hiding her stuff in places. So he put hiding her stuff in places. So he put her car keys in the fridge her car keys in the fridge her car keys in the fridge >> to make her feel like she'd gone crazy. >> to make her feel like she'd gone crazy. >> to make her feel like she'd gone crazy. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Which is crazy. It's absolutely >> Which is crazy. It's absolutely >> Which is crazy. It's absolutely bonkers. bonkers. bonkers. >> Wild. >> Wild. >> Wild. >> Okay, that makes sense. So that was >> Okay, that makes sense. So that was >> Okay, that makes sense. So that was establishing clear boundaries. Really, establishing clear boundaries. Really, establishing clear boundaries. Really, what I was getting at is do they try and what I was getting at is do they try and what I was getting at is do they try and erode those boundaries or do they leave erode those boundaries or do they leave erode those boundaries or do they leave you alone? you alone? you alone? >> So they're likely to try to push on >> So they're likely to try to push on >> So they're likely to try to push on them, but less so than if you have no them, but less so than if you have no them, but less so than if you have no boundaries at all. boundaries at all. boundaries at all. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Yep. So the next one is don't give them >> Yep. So the next one is don't give them >> Yep. So the next one is don't give them power over others. We've talked about power over others. We've talked about power over others. We've talked about kind of all of these different traits kind of all of these different traits kind of all of these different traits and that they you know machinism is and that they you know machinism is and that they you know machinism is actually kind of named after the pursuit actually kind of named after the pursuit actually kind of named after the pursuit of power. Psychopathy is associated with of power. Psychopathy is associated with of power. Psychopathy is associated with doineering people. Narcissism I'm better doineering people. Narcissism I'm better doineering people. Narcissism I'm better than you. I'm a born leader. All of than you. I'm a born leader. All of than you. I'm a born leader. All of these are kind of related to power. these are kind of related to power. these are kind of related to power. People with these traits tend to be very People with these traits tend to be very People with these traits tend to be very interested in having power over other interested in having power over other interested in having power over other people. But we know from research that people. But we know from research that people. But we know from research that this does not tend to go well for those this does not tend to go well for those this does not tend to go well for those individuals who are working underneath individuals who are working underneath individuals who are working underneath them. So at work for example, we know them. So at work for example, we know them. So at work for example, we know that people who are working under a boss that people who are working under a boss that people who are working under a boss with more psychopathic traits report with more psychopathic traits report with more psychopathic traits report being more stressed out. They also tend being more stressed out. They also tend being more stressed out. They also tend to be more likely to bring that stress to be more likely to bring that stress to be more likely to bring that stress home and that creates more family home and that creates more family home and that creates more family conflict. So it kind of spreads. It conflict. So it kind of spreads. It conflict. So it kind of spreads. It doesn't stay where it is. They tend to doesn't stay where it is. They tend to doesn't stay where it is. They tend to create uh division within teams. They

  70. create uh division within teams. They create uh division within teams. They also tend to increase the likelihood of also tend to increase the likelihood of also tend to increase the likelihood of turnover intentions. So, you know, if turnover intentions. So, you know, if turnover intentions. So, you know, if you're working for a boss with these you're working for a boss with these you're working for a boss with these traits, you're like, I got to get the traits, you're like, I got to get the traits, you're like, I got to get the hell out of here. So, you're you're hell out of here. So, you're you're hell out of here. So, you're you're churning through staff, right? So, churning through staff, right? So, churning through staff, right? So, giving them power over others is not a giving them power over others is not a giving them power over others is not a great way to to kind of yeah to deal great way to to kind of yeah to deal great way to to kind of yeah to deal with them. So, you don't want to give with them. So, you don't want to give with them. So, you don't want to give them power over others even when they them power over others even when they them power over others even when they want it, but there's other things that want it, but there's other things that want it, but there's other things that you can give them that they do want. And you can give them that they do want. And you can give them that they do want. And this is essentially like negotiating this is essentially like negotiating this is essentially like negotiating 101, right? So like you can look for 101, right? So like you can look for 101, right? So like you can look for win-wins when you're negotiating with win-wins when you're negotiating with win-wins when you're negotiating with them. Recognizing that what they them. Recognizing that what they them. Recognizing that what they consider motivation to get to this consider motivation to get to this consider motivation to get to this win-win might not be what you consider win-win might not be what you consider win-win might not be what you consider to be motivation to get to this win-win. to be motivation to get to this win-win. to be motivation to get to this win-win. So imagine that like you've got this um So imagine that like you've got this um So imagine that like you've got this um this employee who is bullying his this employee who is bullying his this employee who is bullying his subordinates and you're like you really subordinates and you're like you really subordinates and you're like you really need to treat your team better because need to treat your team better because need to treat your team better because they are so stressed out and they uh you they are so stressed out and they uh you they are so stressed out and they uh you know are going home from work and know are going home from work and know are going home from work and they're crying to their spouses and you they're crying to their spouses and you they're crying to their spouses and you know they're bringing it home and know they're bringing it home and know they're bringing it home and they're they're getting sick because of they're they're getting sick because of they're they're getting sick because of this.

  71. this. this. You're trying to make them feel You're trying to make them feel You're trying to make them feel compassion for other people to get them compassion for other people to get them compassion for other people to get them to behave better to behave better to behave better >> toward their team. That's not motivating >> toward their team. That's not motivating >> toward their team. That's not motivating to them, right? It might be motivating to them, right? It might be motivating to them, right? It might be motivating to other people, but people who with to other people, but people who with to other people, but people who with high levels of these traits, right, were high levels of these traits, right, were high levels of these traits, right, were callous, not concerned about other callous, not concerned about other callous, not concerned about other people. However, people. However, people. However, that doesn't mean that they can't do that doesn't mean that they can't do that doesn't mean that they can't do something kind or helpful, right? They something kind or helpful, right? They something kind or helpful, right? They might just do it for a different reason. might just do it for a different reason. might just do it for a different reason. So if you know that the team is So if you know that the team is So if you know that the team is suffering under this person's current suffering under this person's current suffering under this person's current like bullying management style, you like bullying management style, you like bullying management style, you could say, you know, you've got this, could say, you know, you've got this, could say, you know, you've got this, you know, sales bonus that's coming up, you know, sales bonus that's coming up, you know, sales bonus that's coming up, but your team is so stressed out that but your team is so stressed out that but your team is so stressed out that you're not going to meet that target and you're not going to meet that target and you're not going to meet that target and you're not going to get your your bonus, you're not going to get your your bonus, you're not going to get your your bonus, right? You need to treat your your team right? You need to treat your your team right? You need to treat your your team differently. Money, they like money. differently. Money, they like money. differently. Money, they like money. [laughter] They like power. They like [laughter] They like power. They like [laughter] They like power. They like status. And so it's not that they can't status. And so it's not that they can't status. And so it's not that they can't behave better. is that they might do it behave better. is that they might do it behave better. is that they might do it for a different reason. for a different reason. for a different reason. >> So trying to understand what motivates >> So trying to understand what motivates >> So trying to understand what motivates them. them. them. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And trying to figure out how you can use >> And trying to figure out how you can use >> And trying to figure out how you can use that. The next one is use the carrot, that. The next one is use the carrot, that. The next one is use the carrot, not the stick. So we've talked about not the stick. So we've talked about not the stick. So we've talked about this a little bit where people this a little bit where people this a little bit where people particularly with high levels of particularly with high levels of particularly with high levels of psychopathy very reward sensitive but psychopathy very reward sensitive but psychopathy very reward sensitive but not very punishment sensitive. So you not very punishment sensitive. So you not very punishment sensitive. So you can try to punish them but literally can try to punish them but literally can try to punish them but literally their brains don't process punishment in their brains don't process punishment in their brains don't process punishment in the same way. they don't develop that the same way. they don't develop that the same way. they don't develop that kind of link between if I do this kind of link between if I do this kind of link between if I do this behavior then fear of punishment again.

  72. behavior then fear of punishment again. behavior then fear of punishment again. So like they're more likely to repeat it So like they're more likely to repeat it So like they're more likely to repeat it than people with low levels of these than people with low levels of these than people with low levels of these traits. So punishment, you know, there traits. So punishment, you know, there traits. So punishment, you know, there there's a place for it I suppose, but there's a place for it I suppose, but there's a place for it I suppose, but it's like it's not going to be as it's like it's not going to be as it's like it's not going to be as effective with these personalities in effective with these personalities in effective with these personalities in particular. And I think what's terrible, particular. And I think what's terrible, particular. And I think what's terrible, what we are losing a huge opportunity on what we are losing a huge opportunity on what we are losing a huge opportunity on is that we don't use the carrot instead is that we don't use the carrot instead is that we don't use the carrot instead when the carrot is so powerful. So when the carrot is so powerful. So when the carrot is so powerful. So sometimes people are like, "They're a sometimes people are like, "They're a sometimes people are like, "They're a bad person. I'm not going to reward bad person. I'm not going to reward bad person. I'm not going to reward anything that they do." Like, I'm not anything that they do." Like, I'm not anything that they do." Like, I'm not going to give them any kind of positive going to give them any kind of positive going to give them any kind of positive feedback because I think they're feedback because I think they're feedback because I think they're terrible, right? But if they do terrible, right? But if they do terrible, right? But if they do something kind or honest or helpful, oh something kind or honest or helpful, oh something kind or honest or helpful, oh my god, reward them. Reward them not my god, reward them. Reward them not my god, reward them. Reward them not with power over others, but maybe with with power over others, but maybe with with power over others, but maybe with like a bonus at work, with like a job like a bonus at work, with like a job like a bonus at work, with like a job title, because they really care about title, because they really care about title, because they really care about status. That's a um a reward that they status. That's a um a reward that they status. That's a um a reward that they will really like. and you are going to will really like. and you are going to will really like. and you are going to increase the likelihood that you get increase the likelihood that you get increase the likelihood that you get more of that behavior in the future. more of that behavior in the future. more of that behavior in the future. >> I think there'll be some people >> I think there'll be some people >> I think there'll be some people listening right now that are thinking, listening right now that are thinking, listening right now that are thinking, shouldn't you just fire these people? shouldn't you just fire these people? shouldn't you just fire these people? Shouldn't you get all of these people Shouldn't you get all of these people Shouldn't you get all of these people out of your life if they've got sadism, out of your life if they've got sadism, out of your life if they've got sadism, narcissism, machavellianism, narcissism, machavellianism, narcissism, machavellianism, psychopathy, psychopathy, psychopathy, >> psychopathy? Yeah, >> psychopathy? Yeah, >> psychopathy? Yeah, >> psychopathy. Um, shouldn't you just >> psychopathy. Um, shouldn't you just >> psychopathy. Um, shouldn't you just throw them out your life?

  73. throw them out your life? throw them out your life? >> Yeah. I think given that there are, you >> Yeah. I think given that there are, you >> Yeah. I think given that there are, you know, a reasonable reasonably sized know, a reasonable reasonably sized know, a reasonable reasonably sized minority of the population has some minority of the population has some minority of the population has some elevated level of these traits, you're elevated level of these traits, you're elevated level of these traits, you're going to be chucking a you're going to going to be chucking a you're going to going to be chucking a you're going to be chucking a lot of people, right? And be chucking a lot of people, right? And be chucking a lot of people, right? And they also might genuinely have some like they also might genuinely have some like they also might genuinely have some like really useful skills that just, you really useful skills that just, you really useful skills that just, you know, you want in your company. You just know, you want in your company. You just know, you want in your company. You just need to learn how to manage these this need to learn how to manage these this need to learn how to manage these this personality trait. And so I think even personality trait. And so I think even personality trait. And so I think even if you know you have kind of a low if you know you have kind of a low if you know you have kind of a low tolerance for these personality traits, tolerance for these personality traits, tolerance for these personality traits, you're not going to be able to you're not going to be able to you're not going to be able to completely avoid them at all times. It completely avoid them at all times. It completely avoid them at all times. It might not be your decision to chuck them might not be your decision to chuck them might not be your decision to chuck them out of the company. out of the company. out of the company. >> A sibling or something. >> A sibling or something. >> A sibling or something. >> Yeah, exactly. It might be a person that >> Yeah, exactly. It might be a person that >> Yeah, exactly. It might be a person that you like you want to have a relationship you like you want to have a relationship you like you want to have a relationship with them even if that relationship is with them even if that relationship is with them even if that relationship is not perfect. You know, maybe it's a not perfect. You know, maybe it's a not perfect. You know, maybe it's a brother-in-law, right? and you're like, brother-in-law, right? and you're like, brother-in-law, right? and you're like, he's such a pain in the ass, but I see he's such a pain in the ass, but I see he's such a pain in the ass, but I see him like twice a year and I don't want him like twice a year and I don't want him like twice a year and I don't want to cut him out cuz that means I don't to cut him out cuz that means I don't to cut him out cuz that means I don't get to see my sister anymore and I love get to see my sister anymore and I love get to see my sister anymore and I love my sister and I want to support my my sister and I want to support my my sister and I want to support my sister. And so I think there's just like sister. And so I think there's just like sister. And so I think there's just like >> the the you know stay or go question is >> the the you know stay or go question is >> the the you know stay or go question is just so complicated and there's so many just so complicated and there's so many just so complicated and there's so many reasons why you might not be able to do reasons why you might not be able to do reasons why you might not be able to do that. And so we need to learn the skills that. And so we need to learn the skills that. And so we need to learn the skills to manage interactions with these people to manage interactions with these people to manage interactions with these people as well. Next one is emphasize your as well. Next one is emphasize your as well. Next one is emphasize your common identity. People with high levels common identity. People with high levels common identity. People with high levels of narcissism are not particularly of narcissism are not particularly of narcissism are not particularly interested in like kind of being fair to interested in like kind of being fair to interested in like kind of being fair to you or like you know being kind to you you or like you know being kind to you you or like you know being kind to you but they are interested in loyalty.

  74. but they are interested in loyalty. but they are interested in loyalty. There's these studies that are really There's these studies that are really There's these studies that are really fascinating where they just tell people fascinating where they just tell people fascinating where they just tell people like oh you guys have the same birthday like oh you guys have the same birthday like oh you guys have the same birthday or you have the same fingerprint type or you have the same fingerprint type or you have the same fingerprint type which I don't even think is a thing. Is which I don't even think is a thing. Is which I don't even think is a thing. Is that a thing anyway? But people think we that a thing anyway? But people think we that a thing anyway? But people think we have some sort of commonality. Then have some sort of commonality. Then have some sort of commonality. Then people are people with high levels of people are people with high levels of people are people with high levels of narcissism narcissism narcissism get less angry when you give them get less angry when you give them get less angry when you give them negative feedback if they think you've negative feedback if they think you've negative feedback if they think you've got something in common with them. So if got something in common with them. So if got something in common with them. So if you start your conversation with, you you start your conversation with, you you start your conversation with, you know, maybe that that uncle at know, maybe that that uncle at know, maybe that that uncle at Thanksgiving who's like always combative Thanksgiving who's like always combative Thanksgiving who's like always combative and talks about himself all the time and and talks about himself all the time and and talks about himself all the time and you're like, "Oh, you know, we went to you're like, "Oh, you know, we went to you're like, "Oh, you know, we went to the same university. We root for the the same university. We root for the the same university. We root for the same football team." Whatever it is, you same football team." Whatever it is, you same football team." Whatever it is, you start with what you have in common. start with what you have in common. start with what you have in common. You're like, "Okay, we are one, right?" You're like, "Okay, we are one, right?" You're like, "Okay, we are one, right?" And then if you need to say, "You know And then if you need to say, "You know And then if you need to say, "You know what? you really need to pick up your what? you really need to pick up your what? you really need to pick up your game and help him with the care of game and help him with the care of game and help him with the care of grandma, grandma, grandma, >> then he might be more willing to listen >> then he might be more willing to listen >> then he might be more willing to listen to that as opposed to just like getting to that as opposed to just like getting to that as opposed to just like getting negative feedback. You know, people with negative feedback. You know, people with negative feedback. You know, people with high levels of narcissism don't like high levels of narcissism don't like high levels of narcissism don't like that. Um, so emphasizing your common that. Um, so emphasizing your common that. Um, so emphasizing your common identity can help to tamp that down. I'd identity can help to tamp that down. I'd identity can help to tamp that down. I'd sat here with Tally Sherott who's this sat here with Tally Sherott who's this sat here with Tally Sherott who's this neuroscientist and she'd looked at the neuroscientist and she'd looked at the neuroscientist and she'd looked at the subject of disagreement quite subject of disagreement quite subject of disagreement quite extensively and she'd put people in extensively and she'd put people in extensively and she'd put people in these brain scanners and basically got these brain scanners and basically got these brain scanners and basically got them to disagree with each other at some them to disagree with each other at some them to disagree with each other at some point and looked at what happened in point and looked at what happened in point and looked at what happened in their brain and what she told me she their brain and what she told me she their brain and what she told me she observed is essentially and I'm you know observed is essentially and I'm you know observed is essentially and I'm you know I'm generalizing wildly here so please I'm generalizing wildly here so please I'm generalizing wildly here so please do fact check me on the screen she do fact check me on the screen she do fact check me on the screen she basically observed that the brain basically observed that the brain basically observed that the brain changed when someone disagreed with you changed when someone disagreed with you changed when someone disagreed with you and I was on a um phone call the other and I was on a um phone call the other and I was on a um phone call the other day with about 10 different people from

When you start a rebuttal with I disagree, start a rebuttal with I disagree, start a rebuttal with I disagree, several psychological mechanisms trigger several psychological mechanisms trigger several psychological mechanisms trigger in the other person's brain and that in the other person's brain and that in the other person's brain and that goes into the detail about what's going goes into the detail about what's going goes into the detail about what's going on in their brain. I just it seems so on in their brain. I just it seems so on in their brain. I just it seems so somewhat linked to what you're saying somewhat linked to what you're saying somewhat linked to what you're saying there about like how you keep the other there about like how you keep the other there about like how you keep the other person receptive.

  76. person receptive. person receptive. >> Mhm. Totally. Okay. So, this reminds me >> Mhm. Totally. Okay. So, this reminds me >> Mhm. Totally. Okay. So, this reminds me of another study on I think it's like of another study on I think it's like of another study on I think it's like really doineering bosses. If you need to really doineering bosses. If you need to really doineering bosses. If you need to give them negative feedback like I don't give them negative feedback like I don't give them negative feedback like I don't know say you you hate the way that we're know say you you hate the way that we're know say you you hate the way that we're running this particular process. You running this particular process. You running this particular process. If you say If you say If you say this is so stupid, you need to change this is so stupid, you need to change this is so stupid, you need to change the way that we're doing, you know, like the way that we're doing, you know, like the way that we're doing, you know, like kind of coming in hot. Particularly kind of coming in hot. Particularly kind of coming in hot. Particularly people with high levels of narcissistic people with high levels of narcissistic people with high levels of narcissistic traits are like we don't like this kind traits are like we don't like this kind traits are like we don't like this kind of, you know, ego threat. You're threat, of, you know, ego threat. You're threat, of, you know, ego threat. You're threat, you're criticizing me. You're giving me you're criticizing me. You're giving me you're criticizing me. You're giving me negative feedback. I'm just like negative feedback. I'm just like negative feedback. I'm just like shutting it down, right? I'm not I don't shutting it down, right? I'm not I don't shutting it down, right? I'm not I don't even hear what you're saying. Whereas, even hear what you're saying. Whereas, even hear what you're saying. Whereas, if you phrase it as a question, like, if you phrase it as a question, like, if you phrase it as a question, like, what do you think if we turn these three what do you think if we turn these three what do you think if we turn these three forms into one form? M forms into one form? M forms into one form? M >> phrasing it as a question just kind of >> phrasing it as a question just kind of >> phrasing it as a question just kind of like makes it softer and makes them more like makes it softer and makes them more like makes it softer and makes them more willing to just hear it like maybe you willing to just hear it like maybe you willing to just hear it like maybe you you ultimately won't get to that one you ultimately won't get to that one you ultimately won't get to that one form but you'll at least get a little form but you'll at least get a little form but you'll at least get a little bit further in that conversation. I bit further in that conversation. I bit further in that conversation. I think that's true for you know it's true think that's true for you know it's true think that's true for you know it's true for everybody but especially when it for everybody but especially when it for everybody but especially when it comes to people um who are really comes to people um who are really comes to people um who are really doineering which these personalities doineering which these personalities doineering which these personalities tend to be.

  77. tend to be. tend to be. >> Okay. So like you kind of cocreate the >> Okay. So like you kind of cocreate the >> Okay. So like you kind of cocreate the solution really you know. So, we know that they tend to lie cues. So, we know that they tend to lie cues. So, we know that they tend to lie a lot. Being manipulative, telling lies a lot. Being manipulative, telling lies a lot. Being manipulative, telling lies is kind of part of their MMO. That's is kind of part of their MMO. That's is kind of part of their MMO. That's what all these traits share. And so, what all these traits share. And so, what all these traits share. And so, being able to identify, know what those being able to identify, know what those being able to identify, know what those cues of deception are, know that we're cues of deception are, know that we're cues of deception are, know that we're not looking for gaze aversion. We're not not looking for gaze aversion. We're not not looking for gaze aversion. We're not looking for fidgeting. We're looking for looking for fidgeting. We're looking for looking for fidgeting. We're looking for those lack of verifiable details. We're those lack of verifiable details. We're those lack of verifiable details. We're looking for relatively few details. looking for relatively few details. looking for relatively few details. We're looking for signs of cognitive We're looking for signs of cognitive We're looking for signs of cognitive strain. and maybe like following up, strain. and maybe like following up, strain. and maybe like following up, right? If we start to see some of those right? If we start to see some of those right? If we start to see some of those red flags and finally red flags and finally red flags and finally avoid face-to-face negotiations. So, avoid face-to-face negotiations. So, avoid face-to-face negotiations. So, this is like a really simple move that this is like a really simple move that this is like a really simple move that can be really helpful. So, some research can be really helpful. So, some research can be really helpful. So, some research out of same university as me, University out of same university as me, University out of same university as me, University of British Columbia, um had people with of British Columbia, um had people with of British Columbia, um had people with various levels of these dark traits various levels of these dark traits various levels of these dark traits engage in a negotiation. It was just engage in a negotiation. It was just engage in a negotiation. It was just over like the price of concert tickets.

  78. over like the price of concert tickets. over like the price of concert tickets. >> Mhm. But what they found is that >> Mhm. But what they found is that >> Mhm. But what they found is that whenever those negotiations occurred whenever those negotiations occurred whenever those negotiations occurred face to face, the person with the high face to face, the person with the high face to face, the person with the high level of psychopathic traits or or any level of psychopathic traits or or any level of psychopathic traits or or any of these dark traits, they got a really of these dark traits, they got a really of these dark traits, they got a really good deal. Like they were able to good deal. Like they were able to good deal. Like they were able to command a whole bunch of money for these command a whole bunch of money for these command a whole bunch of money for these concert tickets. Whereas if they engage concert tickets. Whereas if they engage concert tickets. Whereas if they engage in this negotiation over text, in this negotiation over text, in this negotiation over text, that wasn't the case. So if you need to that wasn't the case. So if you need to that wasn't the case. So if you need to negotiate with someone, negotiate with someone, negotiate with someone, these dark traits can be like really these dark traits can be like really these dark traits can be like really doineering, really kind of, you know, doineering, really kind of, you know, doineering, really kind of, you know, superficially charming sometimes in superficially charming sometimes in superficially charming sometimes in person and then you can kind of like let person and then you can kind of like let person and then you can kind of like let your guard down and they're going to your guard down and they're going to your guard down and they're going to take advantage of you. If you reduce take advantage of you. If you reduce take advantage of you. If you reduce them to words on the page, they lose them to words on the page, they lose them to words on the page, they lose some of that like charisma, right? But some of that like charisma, right? But some of that like charisma, right? But there's also other like practical there's also other like practical there's also other like practical reasons like, you know, you've got a reasons like, you know, you've got a reasons like, you know, you've got a written version of what was agreed upon. written version of what was agreed upon. written version of what was agreed upon. like you can't gaslight me and tell me, like you can't gaslight me and tell me, like you can't gaslight me and tell me, you know, I'm misremembering what we you know, I'm misremembering what we you know, I'm misremembering what we agreed upon later. I've got a written agreed upon later. I've got a written agreed upon later. I've got a written version here. I've got some time version here. I've got some time version here. I've got some time >> to think about how I want to respond.

  79. >> to think about how I want to respond. >> to think about how I want to respond. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. You is a a domestic violence situation. You is a a domestic violence situation. You got to get out of the house. you got to got to get out of the house. you got to got to get out of the house. you got to >> maybe negotiate, you know, some sort of >> maybe negotiate, you know, some sort of >> maybe negotiate, you know, some sort of settlement um in a divorce or something settlement um in a divorce or something settlement um in a divorce or something like being face to face can be like being face to face can be like being face to face can be dangerous, right? It literally puts some dangerous, right? It literally puts some dangerous, right? It literally puts some physical distance between yourself and physical distance between yourself and physical distance between yourself and that other person if violence is a that other person if violence is a that other person if violence is a concern. So there's all kinds of concern. So there's all kinds of concern. So there's all kinds of potential upsides to like if you got to potential upsides to like if you got to potential upsides to like if you got to negotiate like pop it into text, put it negotiate like pop it into text, put it negotiate like pop it into text, put it into the chat as opposed to sitting down into the chat as opposed to sitting down into the chat as opposed to sitting down face to face. face to face. face to face. >> I was thinking about all the things that >> I was thinking about all the things that >> I was thinking about all the things that are linked to just having a bit more are linked to just having a bit more are linked to just having a bit more time but also like the medium of text. time but also like the medium of text. time but also like the medium of text. And one of the things that came to mind And one of the things that came to mind And one of the things that came to mind is if someone does have those dark is if someone does have those dark is if someone does have those dark personality traits, personality traits, personality traits, >> they are probably more cautious about >> they are probably more cautious about >> they are probably more cautious about what they say if it's permanent and it's what they say if it's permanent and it's what they say if it's permanent and it's written. So like if I was sending you an email, I might say something to you in email, I might say something to you in email, I might say something to you in person, but if would I write that same person, but if would I write that same person, but if would I write that same thing on an email. thing on an email. thing on an email. >> Uh and the other one is in written form, >> Uh and the other one is in written form, >> Uh and the other one is in written form, you you as the person that's receiving you you as the person that's receiving you you as the person that's receiving the uh being on the receiving end, you the uh being on the receiving end, you the uh being on the receiving end, you have time to show other people and get have time to show other people and get have time to show other people and get another perspective. Even if it's like another perspective. Even if it's like another perspective. Even if it's like putting it into AI or asking Google or putting it into AI or asking Google or putting it into AI or asking Google or Yeah.

So research suggests can be so helpful. So research suggests that whenever we discuss with other that whenever we discuss with other that whenever we discuss with other people before making a a truth lie people before making a a truth lie people before making a a truth lie judgment about someone else's judgment about someone else's judgment about someone else's statements, we tend to be more accurate. statements, we tend to be more accurate. statements, we tend to be more accurate. Another study that Derk Kelner did, he Another study that Derk Kelner did, he Another study that Derk Kelner did, he talked to a bunch of girls in a sorority talked to a bunch of girls in a sorority talked to a bunch of girls in a sorority and asked them who gets talked about the and asked them who gets talked about the and asked them who gets talked about the most like in gossip and uh also had most like in gossip and uh also had most like in gossip and uh also had people rate their personality. But sometimes people, you know, spread information about this was know, spread information about this was know, spread information about this was my experience with this person. And we my experience with this person. And we my experience with this person. And we can learn from other people's experience can learn from other people's experience can learn from other people's experience before having to go through it ourselves before having to go through it ourselves before having to go through it ourselves if we pay attention.

  81. if we pay attention. if we pay attention. So like with respect to psychopathy, that's like with respect to psychopathy, that's like with respect to psychopathy, that's about 1% of the population. They have about 1% of the population. They have about 1% of the population. They have clinical levels of it.

  83. clinical levels of it. clinical levels of it. Offenders with clinical levels of Offenders with clinical levels of Offenders with clinical levels of psychopathy account for about 50% of all psychopathy account for about 50% of all psychopathy account for about 50% of all serious crime. So these people are like serious crime. So these people are like serious crime. So these people are like doing incredibly outsiz harm. And we doing incredibly outsiz harm. And we doing incredibly outsiz harm. And we also feel that in our lives too, right? also feel that in our lives too, right? also feel that in our lives too, right? [clears throat] not necessarily in [clears throat] not necessarily in [clears throat] not necessarily in criminal wrap sheets maybe, but we've criminal wrap sheets maybe, but we've criminal wrap sheets maybe, but we've got like one person who's like got like one person who's like got like one person who's like constantly making things hard because of constantly making things hard because of constantly making things hard because of these traits. They're they're causing these traits. They're they're causing these traits. They're they're causing strife at work. They're um abusing strife at work. They're um abusing strife at work. Summary

The discussion explores identifying psychopathic traits, noting that common assumptions like avoiding eye contact are inaccurate. Research suggests cues like activated eye muscles ("Duchenne smiles") and extensive hand gestures are more indicative of dark personality traits such as psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and sadism. The takeaway is to be aware of these subtle behavioral signals rather than relying on superficial stereotypes when interacting with others.
