[music] Welcome back to the Everyday Pastor, a Welcome back to the Everyday Pastor, a podcast from the Gospel Coalition on the podcast from the Gospel Coalition on the podcast from the Gospel Coalition on the nuts and bolts of ministry. I'm Matt nuts and bolts of ministry. I'm Matt nuts and bolts of ministry. I'm Matt Smith. Smith. Smith. >> And I'm Luke Duncan. And we've talked in >> And I'm Luke Duncan. And we've talked in >> And I'm Luke Duncan. And we've talked in a previous episode about the gospel. a previous episode about the gospel. a previous episode about the gospel. What is the gospel? Uh being freshly What is the gospel? Uh being freshly What is the gospel? Uh being freshly staggered by the news of what God has staggered by the news of what God has staggered by the news of what God has done for us. But we also wanted to done for us. But we also wanted to done for us. But we also wanted to devote an episode. We've had people ask devote an episode. We've had people ask devote an episode. We've had people ask about this. How do we preach the gospel about this. How do we preach the gospel about this. How do we preach the gospel in every sermon? Uh we want to be in every sermon? Uh we want to be in every sermon? Uh we want to be ministers who are distinctly Christian ministers who are distinctly Christian ministers who are distinctly Christian in the way that we're unfolding the word in the way that we're unfolding the word in the way that we're unfolding the word of God. And we want to not just be of God. And we want to not just be of God. And we want to not just be gospel- centered in name only um as just gospel- centered in name only um as just gospel- centered in name only um as just kind of a buzzword or a slogan. We want kind of a buzzword or a slogan. We want kind of a buzzword or a slogan. We want the gospel to drive everything we do, the gospel to drive everything we do, the gospel to drive everything we do, including actually beginning with our including actually beginning with our including actually beginning with our preaching. So, preaching. So, preaching. So, >> right,

  2. >> right, >> right, >> what are some ways that preachers should >> what are some ways that preachers should >> what are some ways that preachers should be thinking about this? be thinking about this? be thinking about this? >> Well, I mean, first, true confessions. >> Well, I mean, first, true confessions. >> Well, I mean, first, true confessions. Again, I you know, this this is Again, I you know, this this is Again, I you know, this this is something I still want to grow in, Matt. something I still want to grow in, Matt. something I still want to grow in, Matt. Um our mutual friend Mark De has been a Um our mutual friend Mark De has been a Um our mutual friend Mark De has been a help to me in this area. And a story help to me in this area. And a story help to me in this area. And a story that Mark tell, you'll probably remember that Mark tell, you'll probably remember that Mark tell, you'll probably remember the specifics of story better than me, the specifics of story better than me, the specifics of story better than me, but Mark had preached a sermon on one of but Mark had preached a sermon on one of but Mark had preached a sermon on one of the books of the penetuk. It may have the books of the penetuk. It may have the books of the penetuk. It may have been from numbers. It may have been from been from numbers. It may have been from been from numbers. It may have been from Leviticus. And one of his members, Leviticus. And one of his members, Leviticus. And one of his members, >> Bill Barren, >> Bill Barren, >> Bill Barren, >> yeah, spoke to him said that was a very >> yeah, spoke to him said that was a very >> yeah, spoke to him said that was a very helpful sermon. He enumerated a number helpful sermon. He enumerated a number helpful sermon. He enumerated a number of things that blessed him. But then he of things that blessed him. But then he of things that blessed him. But then he just in passing said, "But you didn't just in passing said, "But you didn't just in passing said, "But you didn't preach the gospel." preach the gospel." preach the gospel." And Mark thought about it and he said, And Mark thought about it and he said, And Mark thought about it and he said, "He's right." And Mark sort of made a "He's right." And Mark sort of made a "He's right." And Mark sort of made a vow. I'm I'm not going to preach again vow. I'm I'm not going to preach again vow. I'm I'm not going to preach again when I don't preach the gospel. I want when I don't preach the gospel. I want when I don't preach the gospel. I want to always make sure that I'm preaching to always make sure that I'm preaching to always make sure that I'm preaching the gospel. No matter where I'm the gospel. No matter where I'm the gospel. No matter where I'm preaching from the Bible, I know that preaching from the Bible, I know that preaching from the Bible, I know that that conversation had an impact on Mark.

  3. that conversation had an impact on Mark. that conversation had an impact on Mark. Mark relaying that conversation had an Mark relaying that conversation had an Mark relaying that conversation had an impact on me. and I realized, woo, I'm I impact on me. and I realized, woo, I'm I impact on me. and I realized, woo, I'm I I need to be better at that. So, I'm a I need to be better at that. So, I'm a I need to be better at that. So, I'm a work in progress on that, Matt. Um, and work in progress on that, Matt. Um, and work in progress on that, Matt. Um, and so I have tried to be so I have tried to be so I have tried to be very deliberate the the the the sort of very deliberate the the the the sort of very deliberate the the the the sort of the nine marks sermon application grid the nine marks sermon application grid the nine marks sermon application grid is something that will have a section is something that will have a section is something that will have a section on, you know, have you preached the on, you know, have you preached the on, you know, have you preached the gospel? I've tried available online. gospel? I've tried available online. gospel? I've tried available online. We'll put that in the show notes. Uh, We'll put that in the show notes. Uh, We'll put that in the show notes. Uh, sermon application grid, which is a way sermon application grid, which is a way sermon application grid, which is a way to think through application cuz I'll to think through application cuz I'll to think through application cuz I'll just say I think so often in preaching just say I think so often in preaching just say I think so often in preaching the application is the hardest thing and the application is the hardest thing and the application is the hardest thing and um I can actually tell when a preacher um I can actually tell when a preacher um I can actually tell when a preacher is underprepared not when his ex Jesus is underprepared not when his ex Jesus is underprepared not when his ex Jesus is off but when his application is thin is off but when his application is thin is off but when his application is thin true and that's you know guilty guilty true and that's you know guilty guilty true and that's you know guilty guilty is charged and so that's something I've is charged and so that's something I've is charged and so that's something I've wanted to get better at. I love wanted to get better at. I love wanted to get better at. I love preaching the gospel from the Old preaching the gospel from the Old preaching the gospel from the Old Testament. it. That shouldn't surprise Testament. it. That shouldn't surprise Testament. it. That shouldn't surprise us. It didn't surprise early Christians, us. It didn't surprise early Christians, us. It didn't surprise early Christians, but for some reason, it surprises but for some reason, it surprises but for some reason, it surprises Christians today when they hear the Christians today when they hear the Christians today when they hear the gospel from the Old Testament. Of gospel from the Old Testament. Of gospel from the Old Testament. Of course, I love preaching from the course, I love preaching from the course, I love preaching from the Gospels. I love preaching from the Gospels. I love preaching from the Gospels. I love preaching from the epistles. There's no part of the Bible epistles. There's no part of the Bible epistles. There's no part of the Bible that I don't enjoy preaching from, but I that I don't enjoy preaching from, but I that I don't enjoy preaching from, but I especially like to link the Old especially like to link the Old especially like to link the Old Testament purposes of God in their Testament purposes of God in their Testament purposes of God in their promise to the New Testament fulfillment promise to the New Testament fulfillment promise to the New Testament fulfillment of the purposes of God in Christ. And of of the purposes of God in Christ. And of of the purposes of God in Christ. And of course, the New Testament does that

  4. course, the New Testament does that course, the New Testament does that repeatedly. And one example of that repeatedly. And one example of that repeatedly. And one example of that would be, say, I'm preaching through the would be, say, I'm preaching through the would be, say, I'm preaching through the story of Abraham in Genesis. And God story of Abraham in Genesis. And God story of Abraham in Genesis. And God makes these promises to Abraham in makes these promises to Abraham in makes these promises to Abraham in Genesis 12 uh 1:3. Go forth from your Genesis 12 uh 1:3. Go forth from your Genesis 12 uh 1:3. Go forth from your country and from your relatives and from country and from your relatives and from country and from your relatives and from your father's house to the land that I your father's house to the land that I your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a will show you. And I will make you a will show you. And I will make you a great nation. I will bless you. I will great nation. I will bless you. I will great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a make your name great. You will be a make your name great. You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless blessing. I will bless those who bless blessing. I will bless those who bless you. I'll curse those who curse you and you. I'll curse those who curse you and you. I'll curse those who curse you and in you all the families of the earth in you all the families of the earth in you all the families of the earth will be blessed. Well, Paul will will be blessed. Well, Paul will will be blessed. Well, Paul will explicitly say in Galatians 3:13-15 explicitly say in Galatians 3:13-15 explicitly say in Galatians 3:13-15 that the seed, the offspring, the that the seed, the offspring, the that the seed, the offspring, the descendant, the son, the heir that was descendant, the son, the heir that was descendant, the son, the heir that was promised to Abraham was not ultimately promised to Abraham was not ultimately promised to Abraham was not ultimately Isaac. Isaac. Isaac. It was Christ. The seed was Christ. The It was Christ. The seed was Christ. The It was Christ. The seed was Christ. The offspring was Christ. The heir was offspring was Christ. The heir was offspring was Christ. The heir was Christ. And that means all of those Christ. And that means all of those Christ. And that means all of those blessings to use Paul's language blessings to use Paul's language blessings to use Paul's language elsewhere are yay and I'm amen in elsewhere are yay and I'm amen in elsewhere are yay and I'm amen in Christ, you know, and and so Christ, you know, and and so Christ, you know, and and so >> I love you kind of did the KJV >> I love you kind of did the KJV >> I love you kind of did the KJV while I did the NIV showing my age.

  5. while I did the NIV showing my age. while I did the NIV showing my age. >> I just went with Yes. [laughter] >> I just went with Yes. [laughter] >> I just went with Yes. [laughter] >> So I I love when I'm preaching, I want >> So I I love when I'm preaching, I want >> So I I love when I'm preaching, I want to pay attention to the context. I want to pay attention to the context. I want to pay attention to the context. I want to address how that would have been to address how that would have been to address how that would have been heard by the first hearers. And I want heard by the first hearers. And I want heard by the first hearers. And I want to make sure it's part of the flow of to make sure it's part of the flow of to make sure it's part of the flow of the story of redemptive history, but I the story of redemptive history, but I the story of redemptive history, but I also want to relate it to Christ and to also want to relate it to Christ and to also want to relate it to Christ and to the gospel because the New Testament the gospel because the New Testament the gospel because the New Testament does. Yeah. I'm happy you you started does. Yeah. I'm happy you you started does. Yeah. I'm happy you you started there because uh we want to avoid there because uh we want to avoid there because uh we want to avoid preaching the text without preaching preaching the text without preaching preaching the text without preaching Christ. That's the burden of this Christ. That's the burden of this Christ. That's the burden of this conversation. But we also want to avoid conversation. But we also want to avoid conversation. But we also want to avoid preaching Christ without preaching the preaching Christ without preaching the preaching Christ without preaching the text. text. text. >> Correct? And it is possible to leapfrog >> Correct? And it is possible to leapfrog >> Correct? And it is possible to leapfrog over textual and historical realities in over textual and historical realities in over textual and historical realities in order to make too quick a beeline to the order to make too quick a beeline to the order to make too quick a beeline to the cross. Uh and so talk a little bit more cross. Uh and so talk a little bit more cross. Uh and so talk a little bit more about how we can responsibly get to about how we can responsibly get to about how we can responsibly get to Christ from the Old Testament. One is to Christ from the Old Testament. One is to Christ from the Old Testament. One is to follow Christ pattern in Luke 24. So follow Christ pattern in Luke 24. So follow Christ pattern in Luke 24. So when we're preaching the Old Testament, when we're preaching the Old Testament, when we're preaching the Old Testament, we know that Christ specifically drew we know that Christ specifically drew we know that Christ specifically drew attention to the humiliation and to the attention to the humiliation and to the attention to the humiliation and to the exaltation of the Messiah from the Old exaltation of the Messiah from the Old exaltation of the Messiah from the Old Testament. And you can start thinking Testament. And you can start thinking Testament. And you can start thinking like where would I mean don't you don't like where would I mean don't you don't like where would I mean don't you don't you wish you were there at that Bible you wish you were there at that Bible you wish you were there at that Bible study? I mean the greatest Bible study study? I mean the greatest Bible study study? I mean the greatest Bible study in the history of the world. But you've in the history of the world. But you've in the history of the world. But you've got to think that one of the places that got to think that one of the places that got to think that one of the places that he would have gone would have been he would have gone would have been he would have gone would have been Genesis 3:15 in the in the language, he Genesis 3:15 in the in the language, he Genesis 3:15 in the in the language, he shall bruise your head,

  6. shall bruise your head, shall bruise your head, you shall bruise his heel. So there's you shall bruise his heel. So there's you shall bruise his heel. So there's humiliation and exaltation right there humiliation and exaltation right there humiliation and exaltation right there in that passage. So one way is to look in that passage. So one way is to look in that passage. So one way is to look for those kinds of places in the old the for those kinds of places in the old the for those kinds of places in the old the New Testament helps you because the New New Testament helps you because the New New Testament helps you because the New Testament will point you to a lot of Testament will point you to a lot of Testament will point you to a lot of them. It'll point you to Isaiah 53, you them. It'll point you to Isaiah 53, you them. It'll point you to Isaiah 53, you know, it'll point you to Psalm 110. know, it'll point you to Psalm 110. know, it'll point you to Psalm 110. It'll point you to Psalm 118. It'll It'll point you to Psalm 118. It'll It'll point you to Psalm 118. It'll point you to Psalm 2. It'll point you to point you to Psalm 2. It'll point you to point you to Psalm 2. It'll point you to certain passages in the Old Testament certain passages in the Old Testament certain passages in the Old Testament that will help you do that. But then in that will help you do that. But then in that will help you do that. But then in in a passage like this, I'm always in a passage like this, I'm always in a passage like this, I'm always asking where's this cited in the New asking where's this cited in the New asking where's this cited in the New Testament? How is it cited in the New Testament? How is it cited in the New Testament? How is it cited in the New Testament? So I'm I'm looking at it in Testament? So I'm I'm looking at it in Testament? So I'm I'm looking at it in the flow of Genesis, but then part of my the flow of Genesis, but then part of my the flow of Genesis, but then part of my work is to say, how does the New work is to say, how does the New work is to say, how does the New Testament take this and apply it to Testament take this and apply it to Testament take this and apply it to Christ? So the New Testament is a huge Christ? So the New Testament is a huge Christ? So the New Testament is a huge resource to you in this area, but it it resource to you in this area, but it it resource to you in this area, but it it will actually chart out themes for you will actually chart out themes for you will actually chart out themes for you that you can then be on the lookout for that you can then be on the lookout for that you can then be on the lookout for in other places where it may not have an in other places where it may not have an in other places where it may not have an explicit citation. And one of the things explicit citation. And one of the things explicit citation. And one of the things that has happened in in your and my in that has happened in in your and my in that has happened in in your and my in in our very time like in the last few in our very time like in the last few in our very time like in the last few years is years is years is the explosion the explosion the explosion of the recognition of illusions in the of the recognition of illusions in the of the recognition of illusions in the New Testament, the Old Testament. I New Testament, the Old Testament. I New Testament, the Old Testament. I think we've been aware my whole time think we've been aware my whole time think we've been aware my whole time since I was in seminary, probably your since I was in seminary, probably your since I was in seminary, probably your whole time uh in ministry of how many whole time uh in ministry of how many whole time uh in ministry of how many quotations there are in the New quotations there are in the New quotations there are in the New Testament of the Old Testament. But what Testament of the Old Testament. But what Testament of the Old Testament. But what wasn't apparent to me when I was in wasn't apparent to me when I was in wasn't apparent to me when I was in seminary in the 1980s is how many verbal

  7. seminary in the 1980s is how many verbal seminary in the 1980s is how many verbal illusions there are to the Old illusions there are to the Old illusions there are to the Old Testament. Testament. Testament. >> Not direct quotes, but echoes. >> Not direct quotes, but echoes. >> Not direct quotes, but echoes. >> Exactly. And that is incredibly helpful >> Exactly. And that is incredibly helpful >> Exactly. And that is incredibly helpful when you're trying to preach from Old when you're trying to preach from Old when you're trying to preach from Old Testament passages about Christ. So, one Testament passages about Christ. So, one Testament passages about Christ. So, one one that you've already quoted. I you one that you've already quoted. I you one that you've already quoted. I you you and I were talking about something you and I were talking about something you and I were talking about something the other day and you mentioned the the other day and you mentioned the the other day and you mentioned the baptism of Christ as as God's baptism of Christ as as God's baptism of Christ as as God's identification of him as his that identification of him as his that identification of him as his that special son that he talks about in 2 special son that he talks about in 2 special son that he talks about in 2 Samuel 7. Amen. You're exactly right Samuel 7. Amen. You're exactly right Samuel 7. Amen. You're exactly right about that. He uses language right out about that. He uses language right out about that. He uses language right out of 2 Samuel there in the baptism. But of 2 Samuel there in the baptism. But of 2 Samuel there in the baptism. But one of the things that my colleague Ben one of the things that my colleague Ben one of the things that my colleague Ben Glad who's a colleague of yours and mine Glad who's a colleague of yours and mine Glad who's a colleague of yours and mine at TGC runs the Carson Center. Um at TGC runs the Carson Center. Um at TGC runs the Carson Center. Um Ben pointed out to me that the l right Ben pointed out to me that the l right Ben pointed out to me that the l right as as Jesus comes up out of the as as Jesus comes up out of the as as Jesus comes up out of the baptismal waters and and and the heavens baptismal waters and and and the heavens baptismal waters and and and the heavens open the language the heavens opened and open the language the heavens opened and open the language the heavens opened and the the Holy Spirit descended as a dove.

  8. the the Holy Spirit descended as a dove. the the Holy Spirit descended as a dove. That language comes out of the Isaiah That language comes out of the Isaiah That language comes out of the Isaiah passage where Isaiah prays that God passage where Isaiah prays that God passage where Isaiah prays that God would rend the heavens and come down. would rend the heavens and come down. would rend the heavens and come down. And so he's citing Septuagent Greek And so he's citing Septuagent Greek And so he's citing Septuagent Greek language of that passage in Isaiah about language of that passage in Isaiah about language of that passage in Isaiah about the descent of the spirit. And that the descent of the spirit. And that the descent of the spirit. And that helps you so much when you're working. helps you so much when you're working. helps you so much when you're working. It gets even cooler. It gets even cooler. It gets even cooler. >> Yes. So that word, the Greek word in >> Yes. So that word, the Greek word in >> Yes. So that word, the Greek word in Mark for rend or tear only shows up two Mark for rend or tear only shows up two Mark for rend or tear only shows up two times. there at the baptism and with the times. there at the baptism and with the times. there at the baptism and with the tearing of the curtain in the temple. tearing of the curtain in the temple. tearing of the curtain in the temple. Same exact word as as God there again Same exact word as as God there again Same exact word as as God there again splits the skies to let us through into splits the skies to let us through into splits the skies to let us through into his presence. And speaking of been glad, his presence. And speaking of been glad, his presence. And speaking of been glad, I mean in illusions, he has this I mean in illusions, he has this I mean in illusions, he has this wonderful new resource which again, wonderful new resource which again, wonderful new resource which again, we're not being paid to say this. This we're not being paid to say this. This we're not being paid to say this. This just came to our mind. just came to our mind. just came to our mind. >> I was about to go there. Yeah. >> I was about to go there. Yeah. >> I was about to go there. Yeah. >> Okay. Yeah. Connecting scripture, New >> Okay. Yeah. Connecting scripture, New >> Okay. Yeah. Connecting scripture, New Testament, a study Bible of biblical Testament, a study Bible of biblical Testament, a study Bible of biblical illusions and quotations. explain to illusions and quotations. explain to illusions and quotations. explain to listeners what that is. listeners what that is. listeners what that is. >> Okay, so Ben has worked for years with >> Okay, so Ben has worked for years with >> Okay, so Ben has worked for years with Greg Beal who's a wonderful biblical Greg Beal who's a wonderful biblical Greg Beal who's a wonderful biblical theologian who's also sensitive to this theologian who's also sensitive to this theologian who's also sensitive to this kind of usage of a lang whether you call kind of usage of a lang whether you call kind of usage of a lang whether you call it echoes or illusions or whatever use it echoes or illusions or whatever use it echoes or illusions or whatever use deliberate use of language from Old deliberate use of language from Old deliberate use of language from Old Testament passages in New Testament Testament passages in New Testament Testament passages in New Testament passages without necessarily quoting it.

  9. passages without necessarily quoting it. passages without necessarily quoting it. They've the um and and I think this this They've the um and and I think this this They've the um and and I think this this is a Broadman Holman um is that right? is a Broadman Holman um is that right? is a Broadman Holman um is that right? It's the it's brought B&H publishers. So It's the it's brought B&H publishers. So It's the it's brought B&H publishers. So they they've produced this New Testament they they've produced this New Testament they they've produced this New Testament and it's colored co it's colorcoded. Um and it's colored co it's colorcoded. Um and it's colored co it's colorcoded. Um it it will show you the quotations. it it will show you the quotations. it it will show you the quotations. It will show you the illusions. It'll It will show you the illusions. It'll It will show you the illusions. It'll highlight the illusions in colors so highlight the illusions in colors so highlight the illusions in colors so that you can see the ver. It'll give you that you can see the ver. It'll give you that you can see the ver. It'll give you the passages to go to in the Old the passages to go to in the Old the passages to go to in the Old Testament. And they're working on an Old Testament. And they're working on an Old Testament. And they're working on an Old Testament one as well. So eventually Testament one as well. So eventually Testament one as well. So eventually they'll have the whole Bible. So way to they'll have the whole Bible. So way to they'll have the whole Bible. So way to go B&H. This is going to be one of the go B&H. This is going to be one of the go B&H. This is going to be one of the most powerful tools for preachers that I most powerful tools for preachers that I most powerful tools for preachers that I can imagine because even if you're not can imagine because even if you're not can imagine because even if you're not toasty in your Greek, they're gonna toasty in your Greek, they're gonna toasty in your Greek, they're gonna they're going to walk you by hand and they're going to walk you by hand and they're going to walk you by hand and show you the places that you need to go show you the places that you need to go show you the places that you need to go look in your Greek and see how they look in your Greek and see how they look in your Greek and see how they connect to the Old Testament. And so connect to the Old Testament. And so connect to the Old Testament. And so that that's a another wonderful way, that that's a another wonderful way, that that's a another wonderful way, Matt, to make sure that we're we're not Matt, to make sure that we're we're not Matt, to make sure that we're we're not just making stuff up. the New Testament just making stuff up. the New Testament just making stuff up. the New Testament writers see these connections and writers see these connections and writers see these connections and they're they're sprinkling the they're they're sprinkling the they're they're sprinkling the breadcrumbs out for us.

  10. breadcrumbs out for us. breadcrumbs out for us. >> Yeah. It's kind of I mean I've heard >> Yeah. It's kind of I mean I've heard >> Yeah. It's kind of I mean I've heard that there are only 12 chapters in the that there are only 12 chapters in the that there are only 12 chapters in the whole New Testament that don't reference whole New Testament that don't reference whole New Testament that don't reference the Old and again that that reference is the Old and again that that reference is the Old and again that that reference is not always a direct quotation. not always a direct quotation. not always a direct quotation. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> But for those who have ears to hear and >> But for those who have ears to hear and >> But for those who have ears to hear and are wellversed with the language of the are wellversed with the language of the are wellversed with the language of the Old Testament, they're often in the form Old Testament, they're often in the form Old Testament, they're often in the form of illusions. You can almost think about of illusions. You can almost think about of illusions. You can almost think about it like the New Testament is hyperl when it like the New Testament is hyperl when it like the New Testament is hyperl when you're reading an article online. you're reading an article online. you're reading an article online. Certain words or phrases will have a Certain words or phrases will have a Certain words or phrases will have a hyperlink that you can click on. Well, hyperlink that you can click on. Well, hyperlink that you can click on. Well, you can do a lot of double clicking when you can do a lot of double clicking when you can do a lot of double clicking when you're reading your New Testament and you're reading your New Testament and you're reading your New Testament and and and be taken back to previous and and be taken back to previous and and be taken back to previous Revelation that the authors were mindful Revelation that the authors were mindful Revelation that the authors were mindful of as they wrote. And speaking of of as they wrote. And speaking of of as they wrote. And speaking of hyperlinking, Logos is going to have hyperlinking, Logos is going to have hyperlinking, Logos is going to have this this connecting scripture study this this connecting scripture study this this connecting scripture study Bible available on their and you will Bible available on their and you will Bible available on their and you will literally be able to click the hyperlink literally be able to click the hyperlink literally be able to click the hyperlink and go back to the Old Testament and go back to the Old Testament and go back to the Old Testament passages. So I have it in the book form. passages. So I have it in the book form. passages. So I have it in the book form. I I I bought the book as quickly as I I I I bought the book as quickly as I I I I bought the book as quickly as I could. Um, but I also have ordered it on could. Um, but I also have ordered it on could. Um, but I also have ordered it on logos and I'll use both the book form logos and I'll use both the book form logos and I'll use both the book form and the logos form as I'm trying to make and the logos form as I'm trying to make and the logos form as I'm trying to make sure that I'm catching all the sure that I'm catching all the sure that I'm catching all the connections between New Testament and connections between New Testament and connections between New Testament and Old Testament passages. So when when I'm Old Testament passages. So when when I'm Old Testament passages. So when when I'm wanting to preach the gospel naturally wanting to preach the gospel naturally wanting to preach the gospel naturally and exoggetically with sensitivity to and exoggetically with sensitivity to and exoggetically with sensitivity to the text in the context of the Old the text in the context of the Old the text in the context of the Old Testament passage that I'm preaching, Testament passage that I'm preaching, Testament passage that I'm preaching, the first thing that I want to know is the first thing that I want to know is the first thing that I want to know is what does the New Testament do with this what does the New Testament do with this what does the New Testament do with this passage? It might do it through a passage? It might do it through a passage? It might do it through a quotation. It might do it through an quotation. It might do it through an quotation. It might do it through an illusion. Or there might be a thematic

  11. illusion. Or there might be a thematic illusion. Or there might be a thematic connection with the passage. And so connection with the passage. And so connection with the passage. And so those are the ways that I'm trying to be those are the ways that I'm trying to be those are the ways that I'm trying to be textual and preach the gospel at the textual and preach the gospel at the textual and preach the gospel at the same time when I'm working an Old same time when I'm working an Old same time when I'm working an Old Testament passage. I'll give you an Testament passage. I'll give you an Testament passage. I'll give you an example of of one of those thematic example of of one of those thematic example of of one of those thematic connections. So if you're preaching connections. So if you're preaching connections. So if you're preaching Jonah 1 or Mark 4, uh so Jonah 1, of Jonah 1 or Mark 4, uh so Jonah 1, of Jonah 1 or Mark 4, uh so Jonah 1, of course, he runs away from Nineveh. He course, he runs away from Nineveh. He course, he runs away from Nineveh. He ends up in the ship. There's a storm. ends up in the ship. There's a storm. ends up in the ship. There's a storm. He's thrown overboard. Mark 4, there's a He's thrown overboard. Mark 4, there's a He's thrown overboard. Mark 4, there's a storm. Jesus is on the boat with his storm. Jesus is on the boat with his storm. Jesus is on the boat with his disciples. Let's say you're preaching disciples. Let's say you're preaching disciples. Let's say you're preaching Mark 4. Well, you can you can say that Mark 4. Well, you can you can say that Mark 4. Well, you can you can say that ultimately the reason that Jesus and his ultimately the reason that Jesus and his ultimately the reason that Jesus and his disciples didn't perish in that storm disciples didn't perish in that storm disciples didn't perish in that storm was because he had come to face down a was because he had come to face down a was because he had come to face down a greater one. And then you rewind the greater one. And then you rewind the greater one. And then you rewind the clock 800 years earlier where there was clock 800 years earlier where there was clock 800 years earlier where there was another prophet another prophet another prophet >> who was thrown overboard in the >> who was thrown overboard in the >> who was thrown overboard in the floodwaters of God's judgment for his floodwaters of God's judgment for his floodwaters of God's judgment for his own sin. own sin. own sin. But in Christ, we have the final But in Christ, we have the final But in Christ, we have the final prophet, the ultimate prophet, who is prophet, the ultimate prophet, who is prophet, the ultimate prophet, who is thrown into the floodwaters of God's thrown into the floodwaters of God's thrown into the floodwaters of God's judgment not for his own sin, but for judgment not for his own sin, but for judgment not for his own sin, but for ours. And that's not just trying to be ours. And that's not just trying to be ours. And that's not just trying to be fancy, making things up out of thin air.

  12. fancy, making things up out of thin air. fancy, making things up out of thin air. Jesus himself said someone greater than Jesus himself said someone greater than Jesus himself said someone greater than Jonah is here. Jonah is here. Jonah is here. >> That's exactly right. Absolutely. So I >> That's exactly right. Absolutely. So I >> That's exactly right. Absolutely. So I that's that's one way when I'm preaching that's that's one way when I'm preaching that's that's one way when I'm preaching through Abraham that I'm trying to make through Abraham that I'm trying to make through Abraham that I'm trying to make sure that I'm not only telling this sure that I'm not only telling this sure that I'm not only telling this amazing story of God calling this man amazing story of God calling this man amazing story of God calling this man out of the of the Caldes who is from an out of the of the Caldes who is from an out of the of the Caldes who is from an idolatrous family into fellowship with idolatrous family into fellowship with idolatrous family into fellowship with him telling of God's purposes through him telling of God's purposes through him telling of God's purposes through his life and through his family line. his life and through his family line. his life and through his family line. But I'm also ultimately pointing to But I'm also ultimately pointing to But I'm also ultimately pointing to Christ. Um, let's switch to the New Christ. Um, let's switch to the New Christ. Um, let's switch to the New Testament for a second. When when you're Testament for a second. When when you're Testament for a second. When when you're preaching the gospels, preaching the gospels, preaching the gospels, it is possible to forget to preach the it is possible to forget to preach the it is possible to forget to preach the gospel. It really is. gospel. It really is. gospel. It really is. >> So, what are what are some of the things >> So, what are what are some of the things >> So, what are what are some of the things you do when you're you preach through you do when you're you preach through you do when you're you preach through Mark? What are some of the things that Mark? What are some of the things that Mark? What are some of the things that you do? Because what happens, I think, you do? Because what happens, I think, you do? Because what happens, I think, is you get down in the weeds when you're is you get down in the weeds when you're is you get down in the weeds when you're working through, you know, a book study working through, you know, a book study working through, you know, a book study or something. What are some of the or something. What are some of the or something. What are some of the things you do to make sure that you're things you do to make sure that you're things you do to make sure that you're keeping the gospel before the eyes and keeping the gospel before the eyes and keeping the gospel before the eyes and the hearts of your people as you preach the hearts of your people as you preach the hearts of your people as you preach through the Gospel of Mark? Well, it's through the Gospel of Mark? Well, it's through the Gospel of Mark? Well, it's not enough simply to name Jesus.

  13. not enough simply to name Jesus. not enough simply to name Jesus. >> Uh it's not enough to simply talk about >> Uh it's not enough to simply talk about >> Uh it's not enough to simply talk about Jesus. Just because you've named him Jesus. Just because you've named him Jesus. Just because you've named him doesn't mean you've proclaimed him doesn't mean you've proclaimed him doesn't mean you've proclaimed him >> as [clears throat] the solution to our >> as [clears throat] the solution to our >> as [clears throat] the solution to our deepest need. deepest need. deepest need. >> But Brian Chapel, our friend, we we did >> But Brian Chapel, our friend, we we did >> But Brian Chapel, our friend, we we did an episode with him on Christ centered an episode with him on Christ centered an episode with him on Christ centered preaching. That's by the way well worth preaching. That's by the way well worth preaching. That's by the way well worth people going back and listen to. That people going back and listen to. That people going back and listen to. That was I think you said to him I could was I think you said to him I could was I think you said to him I could listen to you all day and I felt the listen to you all day and I felt the listen to you all day and I felt the same way. It was really really good. same way. It was really really good. same way. It was really really good. >> Yeah. But but he talks about how in >> Yeah. But but he talks about how in >> Yeah. But but he talks about how in every passage we can identify both the every passage we can identify both the every passage we can identify both the fallen condition and the redemptive fallen condition and the redemptive fallen condition and the redemptive solution. And this is true for old and solution. And this is true for old and solution. And this is true for old and new testament. So what is the the fallen new testament. So what is the the fallen new testament. So what is the the fallen condition the problem that we deal with condition the problem that we deal with condition the problem that we deal with as people? And it could be kind of a as people? And it could be kind of a as people? And it could be kind of a felt need that that everyone is aware felt need that that everyone is aware felt need that that everyone is aware of. Or it could be more of a deep of. Or it could be more of a deep of. Or it could be more of a deep spiritual need that some are suppressing spiritual need that some are suppressing spiritual need that some are suppressing that truth and unrighteousness. But what that truth and unrighteousness. But what that truth and unrighteousness. But what is the fallen condition this passage is the fallen condition this passage is the fallen condition this passage presents? And how is Jesus uniquely and presents? And how is Jesus uniquely and presents? And how is Jesus uniquely and specifically the answer to that problem?

  14. specifically the answer to that problem? specifically the answer to that problem? And it's just going to look different And it's just going to look different And it's just going to look different with different texts. And so I think with different texts. And so I think with different texts. And so I think it's important that our preaching of the it's important that our preaching of the it's important that our preaching of the gospel gospel gospel doesn't become doesn't become doesn't become predictably. predictably. predictably. We want to be predictable in the sense We want to be predictable in the sense We want to be predictable in the sense that people know we're going to get to that people know we're going to get to that people know we're going to get to the gospel. We don't want to be the gospel. We don't want to be the gospel. We don't want to be predictable in the sense that people predictable in the sense that people predictable in the sense that people always know exactly how unless they've always know exactly how unless they've always know exactly how unless they've studied the passage, right? Cuz we're studied the passage, right? Cuz we're studied the passage, right? Cuz we're not trying to be fancy. But we want to not trying to be fancy. But we want to not trying to be fancy. But we want to do it in a way that's organic that do it in a way that's organic that do it in a way that's organic that arises out of the the the warp and woof arises out of the the the warp and woof arises out of the the the warp and woof of that particular passage. As you as of that particular passage. As you as of that particular passage. As you as you mentioned earlier, for example, you mentioned earlier, for example, you mentioned earlier, for example, follow tracing the theme of the seed of follow tracing the theme of the seed of follow tracing the theme of the seed of the woman to the the son of Abraham to the woman to the the son of Abraham to the woman to the the son of Abraham to the son of David to ultimately the the the son of David to ultimately the the the son of David to ultimately the the the son of God. Um and so it's just the son of God. Um and so it's just the son of God. Um and so it's just going to look different uh based on what going to look different uh based on what going to look different uh based on what passage you're looking at. But that but passage you're looking at. But that but passage you're looking at. But that but I think we have a we have an I think we have a we have an I think we have a we have an embarrassment of of riches today in embarrassment of of riches today in embarrassment of of riches today in terms of resources out there. Frankly, terms of resources out there. Frankly, terms of resources out there. Frankly, there's less excuse than ever uh that there's less excuse than ever uh that there's less excuse than ever uh that preachers have when it comes to figuring preachers have when it comes to figuring preachers have when it comes to figuring out how to do this, but it takes out how to do this, but it takes out how to do this, but it takes careful, patient, deliberate study. Um, careful, patient, deliberate study. Um, careful, patient, deliberate study. Um, and of course, let's just be clear. We and of course, let's just be clear. We and of course, let's just be clear. We want to preach sermons that make much of want to preach sermons that make much of want to preach sermons that make much of Jesus Christ as savior, lord, king, Jesus Christ as savior, lord, king, Jesus Christ as savior, lord, king, friend. and we want to do it not just friend. and we want to do it not just friend. and we want to do it not just because we're checking a box, but because we're checking a box, but because we're checking a box, but ultimately because ultimately because ultimately because if we're preaching sermons that would

  15. if we're preaching sermons that would if we're preaching sermons that would make sense if he was still somewhere in make sense if he was still somewhere in make sense if he was still somewhere in a Middle Eastern grave, then they're not a Middle Eastern grave, then they're not a Middle Eastern grave, then they're not yet Christian sermons. We should only yet Christian sermons. We should only yet Christian sermons. We should only preach sermons that would get us kicked preach sermons that would get us kicked preach sermons that would get us kicked out of Jewish synagogues because we're out of Jewish synagogues because we're out of Jewish synagogues because we're not just preaching generally uplifting not just preaching generally uplifting not just preaching generally uplifting theistic messages. We're preaching theistic messages. We're preaching theistic messages. We're preaching Christ and him crucified. Um, and that's Christ and him crucified. Um, and that's Christ and him crucified. Um, and that's another passage that's interesting. When another passage that's interesting. When another passage that's interesting. When Paul says, "For I have resolved to know Paul says, "For I have resolved to know Paul says, "For I have resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ and him nothing except Jesus Christ and him nothing except Jesus Christ and him crucified." crucified." crucified." What was Paul drawing from in order to What was Paul drawing from in order to What was Paul drawing from in order to preach Christ, the Hebrew scriptures. preach Christ, the Hebrew scriptures. preach Christ, the Hebrew scriptures. >> Well said. And so Paul was seeing in the >> Well said. And so Paul was seeing in the >> Well said. And so Paul was seeing in the Hebrew scriptures that ultimately Jesus Hebrew scriptures that ultimately Jesus Hebrew scriptures that ultimately Jesus is is not just the the kind of main is is not just the the kind of main is is not just the the kind of main idea, he's the main point. I think that idea, he's the main point. I think that idea, he's the main point. I think that that's important that as Christians as that's important that as Christians as that's important that as Christians as we approach the two parts of our Bible, we approach the two parts of our Bible, we approach the two parts of our Bible, it's not that the Old Testament is a it's not that the Old Testament is a it's not that the Old Testament is a shadowy pre-Christian sub-Christian book shadowy pre-Christian sub-Christian book shadowy pre-Christian sub-Christian book and then the New Testament is a and then the New Testament is a and then the New Testament is a Christian book.

  16. Christian book. Christian book. Early Christians viewed the Old Early Christians viewed the Old Early Christians viewed the Old Testament as a Christian book and it was Testament as a Christian book and it was Testament as a Christian book and it was about Jesus. The New Testament is about about Jesus. The New Testament is about about Jesus. The New Testament is about Jesus. The Old Testament is about Jesus. Jesus. The Old Testament is about Jesus. Jesus. The Old Testament is about Jesus. Now there is a promise fulfillment Now there is a promise fulfillment Now there is a promise fulfillment there. There are shadows there. There are shadows there. There are shadows uh and such, but it it's it is a book uh and such, but it it's it is a book uh and such, but it it's it is a book fundamentally about Jesus. Jesus himself fundamentally about Jesus. Jesus himself fundamentally about Jesus. Jesus himself said that. I think that's why Paul says said that. I think that's why Paul says said that. I think that's why Paul says things like he said in the passage you things like he said in the passage you things like he said in the passage you just quoted and also in 1 Corinthians 10 just quoted and also in 1 Corinthians 10 just quoted and also in 1 Corinthians 10 and in a bunch of other places. I just and in a bunch of other places. I just and in a bunch of other places. I just think he was listening to Jesus. And think he was listening to Jesus. And think he was listening to Jesus. And Jesus had said, "Don't read that book Jesus had said, "Don't read that book Jesus had said, "Don't read that book without realizing that that book is without realizing that that book is without realizing that that book is about the Christ and and I'm the Christ. about the Christ and and I'm the Christ. about the Christ and and I'm the Christ. It's about me." And I think one of It's about me." And I think one of It's about me." And I think one of Paul's big critiques, Paul's big critiques, Paul's big critiques, and you see this in Jesus, too, but one and you see this in Jesus, too, but one and you see this in Jesus, too, but one of Paul's big critiques of the Judaism of Paul's big critiques of the Judaism of Paul's big critiques of the Judaism of his day is the Judaism of his day of his day is the Judaism of his day of his day is the Judaism of his day said, "Yes, sin is a problem. said, "Yes, sin is a problem. said, "Yes, sin is a problem. Law is the answer." And and Paul said, Law is the answer." And and Paul said, Law is the answer." And and Paul said, "No, no, no, no. Sin is the problem.

  17. "No, no, no, no. Sin is the problem. "No, no, no, no. Sin is the problem. Christ is the answer. Your your Christ is the answer. Your your Christ is the answer. Your your lawkeeping is not the answer to sin. lawkeeping is not the answer to sin. lawkeeping is not the answer to sin. Christ and Christ alone is the answer to Christ and Christ alone is the answer to Christ and Christ alone is the answer to the problem of your lawkeeping. And by the problem of your lawkeeping. And by the problem of your lawkeeping. And by the way, I think that realization helps the way, I think that realization helps the way, I think that realization helps you unlock as a Christian preacher how you unlock as a Christian preacher how you unlock as a Christian preacher how to preach through books like Leviticus, to preach through books like Leviticus, to preach through books like Leviticus, you know, how to preach through you know, how to preach through you know, how to preach through Deuteronomy. The lawgiver became the Deuteronomy. The lawgiver became the Deuteronomy. The lawgiver became the lawkeeper and then died in the place of lawkeeper and then died in the place of lawkeeper and then died in the place of lawb breakakers. Yeah. Uh you recently lawb breakakers. Yeah. Uh you recently lawb breakakers. Yeah. Uh you recently were preparing to preach Psalm 88, the were preparing to preach Psalm 88, the were preparing to preach Psalm 88, the darkest psalm in the Bible, which which darkest psalm in the Bible, which which darkest psalm in the Bible, which which ends on a hopeless note. ends on a hopeless note. ends on a hopeless note. >> Yes. How would you preach Christ from a >> Yes. How would you preach Christ from a >> Yes. How would you preach Christ from a passage like that? Um, one way that passage like that? Um, one way that passage like that? Um, one way that struck me even as I was reading over the struck me even as I was reading over the struck me even as I was reading over the material again, reading some new material again, reading some new material again, reading some new commentaries is the searching questions commentaries is the searching questions commentaries is the searching questions that the psalmists ask, you know, can that the psalmists ask, you know, can that the psalmists ask, you know, can how, you know, how am I going to praise how, you know, how am I going to praise how, you know, how am I going to praise you from the grave? And as a Christian you from the grave? And as a Christian you from the grave? And as a Christian preacher, you're just going, "Oh, you preacher, you're just going, "Oh, you preacher, you're just going, "Oh, you just threw that one right across the just threw that one right across the just threw that one right across the middle of the plate, right above the middle of the plate, right above the middle of the plate, right above the knees [laughter] knees [laughter] knees [laughter] to me. Thank you for asking that to me. Thank you for asking that to me. Thank you for asking that question. You know, and so from his question. You know, and so from his question. You know, and so from his standpoint, there's no answer to that standpoint, there's no answer to that standpoint, there's no answer to that question. You only can answer that question. You only can answer that question. You only can answer that question with the resurrection. And so I question with the resurrection. And so I question with the resurrection. And so I had actually as as I had prepared the had actually as as I had prepared the had actually as as I had prepared the message, I was going to have a third message, I was going to have a third message, I was going to have a third point and just say pause. Okay, I'm point and just say pause. Okay, I'm point and just say pause. Okay, I'm going to bring you out of the slew of going to bring you out of the slew of going to bring you out of the slew of despond for just a few minutes because despond for just a few minutes because despond for just a few minutes because he just asked us a question that begged he just asked us a question that begged he just asked us a question that begged us to talk about the resurrection. And us to talk about the resurrection. And us to talk about the resurrection. And so he just he he invites you to answer a

  18. so he just he he invites you to answer a so he just he he invites you to answer a question that is unanswerable from his question that is unanswerable from his question that is unanswerable from his standpoint that can only be answered. standpoint that can only be answered. standpoint that can only be answered. And it's of course it's a question And it's of course it's a question And it's of course it's a question that's being asked in the New Testament that's being asked in the New Testament that's being asked in the New Testament as well. And um and and so that just as well. And um and and so that just as well. And um and and so that just gets you in, you know, we were talking gets you in, you know, we were talking gets you in, you know, we were talking uh a few weeks ago about how you can't uh a few weeks ago about how you can't uh a few weeks ago about how you can't preach the gospel and just do Christ's preach the gospel and just do Christ's preach the gospel and just do Christ's crucifixion and death and burial. You've crucifixion and death and burial. You've crucifixion and death and burial. You've got to preach the resurrection or you're got to preach the resurrection or you're got to preach the resurrection or you're not yet preaching the good news. And not yet preaching the good news. And not yet preaching the good news. And Psalm 88 just tees it up for you to do Psalm 88 just tees it up for you to do Psalm 88 just tees it up for you to do that there. [music] Visit sbts.edu/phd Yeah. Reminds me also of of a place like Yeah. Reminds me also of of a place like Job 9:33. Job 9:33. Job 9:33. There is no mediator between us to lay There is no mediator between us to lay There is no mediator between us to lay his hand on both of us. Let him take his his hand on both of us. Let him take his his hand on both of us. Let him take his rod away from me so his terror will no rod away from me so his terror will no rod away from me so his terror will no longer frighten me. Then I would speak longer frighten me. Then I would speak longer frighten me. Then I would speak and not fear him. But that is not the and not fear him. But that is not the and not fear him. But that is not the case. I am on my own. And that way of case. I am on my own. And that way of case. I am on my own. And that way of speaking makes complete sense based on speaking makes complete sense based on speaking makes complete sense based on what Job knows. That's right. what Job knows. That's right. what Job knows. That's right. >> But but we know more. Um and that you >> But but we know more. Um and that you >> But but we know more. Um and that you know first Peter talks about angels long know first Peter talks about angels long know first Peter talks about angels long to look into these things and and to look into these things and and to look into these things and and sometimes I I tell my people sometimes I I tell my people sometimes I I tell my people angels angels angels could understand could understand could understand celebrating worshiping Christ as creator celebrating worshiping Christ as creator celebrating worshiping Christ as creator and maker and king and forever and ever and maker and king and forever and ever and maker and king and forever and ever they sing holy holy holy but only we can they sing holy holy holy but only we can they sing holy holy holy but only we can know Christ as savior and friend and so know Christ as savior and friend and so know Christ as savior and friend and so we can also sing mercy mercy Mercy.

  20. we can also sing mercy mercy Mercy. we can also sing mercy mercy Mercy. Amen. Amen. Amen. >> And you had asked about, you know, >> And you had asked about, you know, >> And you had asked about, you know, preaching the gospel from, for example, preaching the gospel from, for example, preaching the gospel from, for example, the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I think it's especially easy when John. I think it's especially easy when John. I think it's especially easy when we're when we're there in in the Gospels we're when we're there in in the Gospels we're when we're there in in the Gospels to pre present Jesus first and foremost to pre present Jesus first and foremost to pre present Jesus first and foremost as an example, not a savior, which is as an example, not a savior, which is as an example, not a savior, which is dangerous. Now I do think there is a dangerous. Now I do think there is a dangerous. Now I do think there is a form of gospel- centered preaching which form of gospel- centered preaching which form of gospel- centered preaching which doesn't give full force to the moral doesn't give full force to the moral doesn't give full force to the moral demands of the New Testament. Okay. So demands of the New Testament. Okay. So demands of the New Testament. Okay. So Jesus is our example. Jesus is our example. Jesus is our example. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Amen. >> Uh first Peter 2 talks about that s >> Uh first Peter 2 talks about that s >> Uh first Peter 2 talks about that s suffering like he did without opening suffering like he did without opening suffering like he did without opening his mouth. Yeah. his mouth. Yeah. his mouth. Yeah. >> But first and foremost before he can be >> But first and foremost before he can be >> But first and foremost before he can be our example we have to trust him as our our example we have to trust him as our our example we have to trust him as our savior. That's so good. Yeah. And I and savior. That's so good. Yeah. And I and savior. That's so good. Yeah. And I and and and good faithful gospel and and good faithful gospel and and good faithful gospel proclamation is not going to um as proclamation is not going to um as proclamation is not going to um as Spurgeon has this saying, don't don't Spurgeon has this saying, don't don't Spurgeon has this saying, don't don't try and reconcile friends. You know, try and reconcile friends. You know, try and reconcile friends. You know, justification and sanctification are justification and sanctification are justification and sanctification are friends. They don't need to be friends. They don't need to be friends. They don't need to be reconciled. They're already friends.

They're for one another. one another. They're for one another. And that's why in my little gospel And that's why in my little gospel And that's why in my little gospel presentation I'll go from faith our presentation I'll go from faith our presentation I'll go from faith our answer to new life our pleasure to in answer to new life our pleasure to in answer to new life our pleasure to in indicate that the that the consequent indicate that the that the consequent indicate that the that the consequent growth in grace in the Christian life growth in grace in the Christian life growth in grace in the Christian life the newness of life that Paul talks the newness of life that Paul talks the newness of life that Paul talks about in Romans 6 and elsewhere Jesus about in Romans 6 and elsewhere Jesus about in Romans 6 and elsewhere Jesus talks about it in John 3. That newness talks about it in John 3. That newness talks about it in John 3. That newness of life is it's a blessing not a burden. of life is it's a blessing not a burden. of life is it's a blessing not a burden. It's it's that hey, this is what it's It's it's that hey, this is what it's It's it's that hey, this is what it's all about to be able to walk with God. all about to be able to walk with God. all about to be able to walk with God. That's the thing we want. We want That's the thing we want. We want That's the thing we want. We want communion with God. Jesus brought us to communion with God. Jesus brought us to communion with God. Jesus brought us to God. Don't you want to enjoy that? And God. Don't you want to enjoy that? And God. Don't you want to enjoy that? And um and so put, you're right, putting um and so put, you're right, putting um and so put, you're right, putting that together and explaining that to that together and explaining that to that together and explaining that to people. Again, you me, you've already people. Again, you me, you've already people. Again, you me, you've already mentioned, I think the last time we were mentioned, I think the last time we were mentioned, I think the last time we were together, you mentioned Sinclair together, you mentioned Sinclair together, you mentioned Sinclair Ferguson's the whole Christ. I do tell Ferguson's the whole Christ. I do tell Ferguson's the whole Christ. I do tell preachers a lot if you're trying to preachers a lot if you're trying to preachers a lot if you're trying to figure out preaching the gospel like the figure out preaching the gospel like the figure out preaching the gospel like the whole answer is in Sinclair Ferguson's whole answer is in Sinclair Ferguson's whole answer is in Sinclair Ferguson's the whole Christ. It really does put the whole Christ. It really does put the whole Christ. It really does put those things together so well. And he those things together so well. And he those things together so well. And he argues that Antonyomians argues that Antonyomians argues that Antonyomians and neonians legalists and those who and neonians legalists and those who and neonians legalists and those who just think that we're saved to do just think that we're saved to do just think that we're saved to do whatever we want to do. um they both whatever we want to do. um they both whatever we want to do. um they both make the mistake of not realizing the make the mistake of not realizing the make the mistake of not realizing the reality of the gracious father. And so reality of the gracious father. And so reality of the gracious father. And so the Antonyomian kind of he he you know the Antonyomian kind of he he you know the Antonyomian kind of he he you know he he loves salvation. He loves he he loves salvation. He loves he he loves salvation. He loves forgiveness but he kind of hates the

  22. forgiveness but he kind of hates the forgiveness but he kind of hates the law. Well I mean the law is the gift of law. Well I mean the law is the gift of law. Well I mean the law is the gift of the gracious father. It's not there to the gracious father. It's not there to the gracious father. It's not there to ruin your life. It's there to bless you. ruin your life. It's there to bless you. ruin your life. It's there to bless you. You know not a single syllable of the You know not a single syllable of the You know not a single syllable of the law is meant to curse you. It's meant to law is meant to curse you. It's meant to law is meant to curse you. It's meant to bless you. So the the very attitude bless you. So the the very attitude bless you. So the the very attitude toward I hate the law. That's that's toward I hate the law. That's that's toward I hate the law. That's that's something that okay, you haven't seen something that okay, you haven't seen something that okay, you haven't seen the gracious father. The legalist on the the gracious father. The legalist on the the gracious father. The legalist on the other hand thinks he can keep it. other hand thinks he can keep it. other hand thinks he can keep it. >> And and he he need No, no, no, no, no, >> And and he he need No, no, no, no, no, >> And and he he need No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You you you and and and you you no, no. You you you and and and you you no, no. You you you and and and you you kind of pretend some of you trying to kind of pretend some of you trying to kind of pretend some of you trying to pretend like you keep it, you know, pretend like you keep it, you know, pretend like you keep it, you know, because you think you're, you know, because you think you're, you know, because you think you're, you know, ticking off the box for for God, you ticking off the box for for God, you ticking off the box for for God, you know, and you're getting points. You know, and you're getting points. You know, and you're getting points. You don't know the gracious father. So, I don't know the gracious father. So, I don't know the gracious father. So, I love the way Ferguson, love the way Ferguson, love the way Ferguson, you know, deals with both of those you know, deals with both of those you know, deals with both of those >> he calls them nonidentical twins from >> he calls them nonidentical twins from >> he calls them nonidentical twins from the same womb. [laughter] the same womb. [laughter] the same womb. [laughter] And it's it's so true. In fact, um when And it's it's so true. In fact, um when And it's it's so true. In fact, um when Tim Keller died, John Piper remarked Tim Keller died, John Piper remarked Tim Keller died, John Piper remarked that something from Keller's preaching, that something from Keller's preaching, that something from Keller's preaching, something he heard Keller say something he heard Keller say something he heard Keller say revolutionized Piper's own preaching, revolutionized Piper's own preaching, revolutionized Piper's own preaching, his own view of it. And that's that his own view of it. And that's that his own view of it. And that's that Keller said that in a place like New Keller said that in a place like New Keller said that in a place like New York, he had to preach against legalism.

  23. York, he had to preach against legalism. York, he had to preach against legalism. And Piper thought, well, how is that the And Piper thought, well, how is that the And Piper thought, well, how is that the case? You're in New York. You, if we're case? You're in New York. You, if we're case? You're in New York. You, if we're talking about Luke 15, you don't have a talking about Luke 15, you don't have a talking about Luke 15, you don't have a bunch of older brothers. You've got bunch of older brothers. You've got bunch of older brothers. You've got younger brothers. You've got prodigals. younger brothers. You've got prodigals. younger brothers. You've got prodigals. You've got lawless people. What they You've got lawless people. What they You've got lawless people. What they need is some law. And they do. But need is some law. And they do. But need is some law. And they do. But Keller pointed out because the default Keller pointed out because the default Keller pointed out because the default mode of the human heart is legalism, mode of the human heart is legalism, mode of the human heart is legalism, people are going to assume that the people are going to assume that the people are going to assume that the alternative, the only alternative to alternative, the only alternative to alternative, the only alternative to license is legalism. license is legalism. license is legalism. That I just have to if I'm going to That I just have to if I'm going to That I just have to if I'm going to become religious, I'm going to go from become religious, I'm going to go from become religious, I'm going to go from being the younger brother to the older being the younger brother to the older being the younger brother to the older brother. So, you have to actually show brother. So, you have to actually show brother. So, you have to actually show that there are two ways to be lost in that there are two ways to be lost in that there are two ways to be lost in order to show that there's one way to be order to show that there's one way to be order to show that there's one way to be saved. I love the there's an anecdote of saved. I love the there's an anecdote of saved. I love the there's an anecdote of a of a Puritan, I believe it was David a of a Puritan, I believe it was David a of a Puritan, I believe it was David Dixon, um who on his deathbed said, "I Dixon, um who on his deathbed said, "I Dixon, um who on his deathbed said, "I have made a heap of all my bad works and have made a heap of all my bad works and have made a heap of all my bad works and a heap of all my good works and I fled a heap of all my good works and I fled a heap of all my good works and I fled them both to Jesus Christ." That's them both to Jesus Christ." That's them both to Jesus Christ." That's right. right. right. >> Because naturally, we think that what it >> Because naturally, we think that what it >> Because naturally, we think that what it means to get right with God, to follow means to get right with God, to follow means to get right with God, to follow Jesus, is to is to flee from that pile Jesus, is to is to flee from that pile Jesus, is to is to flee from that pile of bad works to our pile of good works.

  24. of bad works to our pile of good works. of bad works to our pile of good works. But no, we flee and collapse into the But no, we flee and collapse into the But no, we flee and collapse into the open arms of Jesus. open arms of Jesus. open arms of Jesus. >> Amen. The Christ continues to be the >> Amen. The Christ continues to be the >> Amen. The Christ continues to be the answer. And um so the the law becomes answer. And um so the the law becomes answer. And um so the the law becomes your friend. It becomes a guide to to to your friend. It becomes a guide to to to your friend. It becomes a guide to to to help you walk with God, but it's never help you walk with God, but it's never help you walk with God, but it's never the answer. Christ is the answer. And um the answer. Christ is the answer. And um the answer. Christ is the answer. And um so I I I think that's a good thing to so I I I think that's a good thing to so I I I think that's a good thing to remember. But by the way, we haven't remember. But by the way, we haven't remember. But by the way, we haven't talked about the epistles. I find it I talked about the epistles. I find it I talked about the epistles. I find it I find the only challenge about preaching find the only challenge about preaching find the only challenge about preaching the gospel in the epistles is that again the gospel in the epistles is that again the gospel in the epistles is that again if you're so down into a smaller text if you're so down into a smaller text if you're so down into a smaller text you can fix you can forget the larger you can fix you can forget the larger you can fix you can forget the larger context. The epistles are doing a lot of context. The epistles are doing a lot of context. The epistles are doing a lot of the work for you and that they're making the work for you and that they're making the work for you and that they're making an argument when you're preaching the an argument when you're preaching the an argument when you're preaching the gospels. The the theological rationale gospels. The the theological rationale gospels. The the theological rationale is always there in what the gospel is always there in what the gospel is always there in what the gospel writer has given you. But sometimes you writer has given you. But sometimes you writer has given you. But sometimes you have to pull back and ask how what have to pull back and ask how what have to pull back and ask how what what's the move he's making right here? what's the move he's making right here? what's the move he's making right here? Why is he talking about this right now? Why is he talking about this right now? Why is he talking about this right now? And then talk about the gospel from that And then talk about the gospel from that And then talk about the gospel from that standpoint. The the epistles do a lot of standpoint. The the epistles do a lot of standpoint. The the epistles do a lot of the work for you. But if you're, you the work for you. But if you're, you the work for you. But if you're, you know, if you're doing a two-year series know, if you're doing a two-year series know, if you're doing a two-year series through Ephesians, you could certainly through Ephesians, you could certainly through Ephesians, you could certainly so zero in on one particular, it might so zero in on one particular, it might so zero in on one particular, it might it might even be the doctrine of it might even be the doctrine of it might even be the doctrine of adoption, as glorious as that is, and adoption, as glorious as that is, and adoption, as glorious as that is, and forget to bring the gospel to bear on forget to bring the gospel to bear on forget to bring the gospel to bear on your hearers. You end up maybe your hearers. You end up maybe your hearers. You end up maybe comforting Christians comforting Christians comforting Christians and you forget to challenge unbelievers and you forget to challenge unbelievers and you forget to challenge unbelievers while you're teaching a beautifully

  25. while you're teaching a beautifully while you're teaching a beautifully glorious gospel truth. And that's what I glorious gospel truth. And that's what I glorious gospel truth. And that's what I have to remind myself of, Matt. You have to remind myself of, Matt. You have to remind myself of, Matt. You know, don't just comfort believers. Make know, don't just comfort believers. Make know, don't just comfort believers. Make sure that I'm, you know, make sure that sure that I'm, you know, make sure that sure that I'm, you know, make sure that I'm unsettling unbelievers in their I'm unsettling unbelievers in their I'm unsettling unbelievers in their comfort. Y comfort. Y comfort. Y >> or I'm challenging them with a truth >> or I'm challenging them with a truth >> or I'm challenging them with a truth that they may be resistant to. Figure that they may be resistant to. Figure that they may be resistant to. Figure out some way to get to them with the out some way to get to them with the out some way to get to them with the material that might be a comfort to material that might be a comfort to material that might be a comfort to believers. Um, that's what I have to believers. Um, that's what I have to believers. Um, that's what I have to remind myself of. What are the things remind myself of. What are the things remind myself of. What are the things you have to remind yourself of? And it's you have to remind yourself of? And it's you have to remind yourself of? And it's it's I think it's okay to be provocative it's I think it's okay to be provocative it's I think it's okay to be provocative at times with with a bit of a smile. Uh at times with with a bit of a smile. Uh at times with with a bit of a smile. Uh so, you know, friend, if you're here and so, you know, friend, if you're here and so, you know, friend, if you're here and you're not following Jesus, we are so you're not following Jesus, we are so you're not following Jesus, we are so glad you're here. glad you're here. glad you're here. I'm just curious, even if we were to I'm just curious, even if we were to I'm just curious, even if we were to answer all of your objections to your answer all of your objections to your answer all of your objections to your satisfaction, satisfaction, satisfaction, would you follow Jesus Christ for the would you follow Jesus Christ for the would you follow Jesus Christ for the rest of your life? rest of your life? rest of your life? >> Um you know, would you lay down your >> Um you know, would you lay down your >> Um you know, would you lay down your arms and surrender to him? Because if arms and surrender to him? Because if arms and surrender to him? Because if the answer is no, the answer is no, the answer is no, then that might indicate that your then that might indicate that your then that might indicate that your objections are not actually what's objections are not actually what's objections are not actually what's keeping you away. Maybe those things are keeping you away. Maybe those things are keeping you away. Maybe those things are smoke screens. Maybe you don't want to smoke screens. Maybe you don't want to smoke screens. Maybe you don't want to entrust your life to an authority other entrust your life to an authority other entrust your life to an authority other than yourself. Um, and so I think that than yourself. Um, and so I think that than yourself. Um, and so I think that there are ways to respectfully there are ways to respectfully there are ways to respectfully engage with lost people with engage with lost people with engage with lost people with intellectual honesty, but with a intellectual honesty, but with a intellectual honesty, but with a directness that I found that they directness that I found that they directness that I found that they actually really appreciate because actually really appreciate because actually really appreciate because they've come to church. That's good.

  26. they've come to church. That's good. they've come to church. That's good. >> Expecting to be addressed. Um uh or or >> Expecting to be addressed. Um uh or or >> Expecting to be addressed. Um uh or or whether or not they're expecting to be whether or not they're expecting to be whether or not they're expecting to be addressed, they they want to be taken addressed, they they want to be taken addressed, they they want to be taken seriously. And I think in our preaching, seriously. And I think in our preaching, seriously. And I think in our preaching, we do that. That's good. I think as we do that. That's good. I think as we do that. That's good. I think as preachers, as we listen to other good preachers, as we listen to other good preachers, as we listen to other good gospel preachers, um while it's gospel preachers, um while it's gospel preachers, um while it's wonderful just to bask in the glory of wonderful just to bask in the glory of wonderful just to bask in the glory of that and drink it in and let it soak in, that and drink it in and let it soak in, that and drink it in and let it soak in, we probably need to also be asking we probably need to also be asking we probably need to also be asking why did that land like it landed? what why did that land like it landed? what why did that land like it landed? what did he what move did he just make to get did he what move did he just make to get did he what move did he just make to get through to my heart because chances are through to my heart because chances are through to my heart because chances are that's going to work in your own that's going to work in your own that's going to work in your own preaching. So you do need to ask some preaching. So you do need to ask some preaching. So you do need to ask some questions. What we talked about questions. What we talked about questions. What we talked about Alistister Beg's message, you know, and Alistister Beg's message, you know, and Alistister Beg's message, you know, and I think what did you just do to me that I think what did you just do to me that I think what did you just do to me that brought I've heard that a million times brought I've heard that a million times brought I've heard that a million times and you made me hear that like I had and you made me hear that like I had and you made me hear that like I had heard it for the first time and I'm heard it for the first time and I'm heard it for the first time and I'm crying like a baby while you tell this crying like a baby while you tell this crying like a baby while you tell this and I've listened to you do this 40 and I've listened to you do this 40 and I've listened to you do this 40 times. Summary

The podcast episode discusses the importance of preaching the gospel in every sermon, emphasizing that Jesus is the main point of scripture. It references Paul's understanding of the Hebrew scriptures and shares an anecdote about a pastor's realization that he hadn't explicitly preached the gospel in a sermon.
