Why are there so many different books on Why are there so many different books on here's how you should read the Bible? here's how you should read the Bible? here's how you should read the Bible? Yeah, um Yeah, um Yeah, um I don't know the answer to this I don't know the answer to this I don't know the answer to this question. The The The question is when question. The The The question is when question. The The The question is when did this start? did this start? did this start? And I think this started in the in in And I think this started in the in in And I think this started in the in in biblical studies like in the '80s and biblical studies like in the '80s and biblical studies like in the '80s and especially into the '90s and late '90s especially into the '90s and late '90s especially into the '90s and late '90s when the whole question of hermeneutics when the whole question of hermeneutics when the whole question of hermeneutics started to come into the field of the of started to come into the field of the of started to come into the field of the of biblical studies. Yeah, just as a side biblical studies. Yeah, just as a side biblical studies. Yeah, just as a side note, maybe I Yeah, you need to explain note, maybe I Yeah, you need to explain note, maybe I Yeah, you need to explain what that is. what that is. what that is. >> So, the word Yeah, so the word >> So, the word Yeah, so the word >> So, the word Yeah, so the word The word hermeneutics simply means to The word hermeneutics simply means to The word hermeneutics simply means to interpret, the process of of interpret, the process of of interpret, the process of of interpreting. interpreting. interpreting. And in the last 30-ish years, biblical And in the last 30-ish years, biblical And in the last 30-ish years, biblical studies scholars have been working on, studies scholars have been working on, studies scholars have been working on, well, how do we interpret? What does well, how do we interpret? What does well, how do we interpret? What does that mean at a very fundamental level? that mean at a very fundamental level? that mean at a very fundamental level? Christians just always did it. Christians just always did it. Christians just always did it. But in the last 30 to 40 years, we're But in the last 30 to 40 years, we're But in the last 30 to 40 years, we're starting to really drill down. And this starting to really drill down. And this starting to really drill down. And this has to do with larger issues that went has to do with larger issues that went has to do with larger issues that went on in our culture and in philosophy. on in our culture and in philosophy. on in our culture and in philosophy. But so, this whole way of this whole But so, this whole way of this whole But so, this whole way of this whole idea of different reading strategies is idea of different reading strategies is idea of different reading strategies is really a new thing in the last 30 or so really a new thing in the last 30 or so really a new thing in the last 30 or so years.

  2. years. years. And this gets us to today's episode, and And this gets us to today's episode, and And this gets us to today's episode, and that is should we read, and I'm going to that is should we read, and I'm going to that is should we read, and I'm going to ask it rhetorically, should we read the ask it rhetorically, should we read the ask it rhetorically, should we read the Old Testament like Jesus? Old Testament like Jesus? Old Testament like Jesus? I'll say it's rhetorical because it's I'll say it's rhetorical because it's I'll say it's rhetorical because it's yes. yes. yes. >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> That's right. I don't actually think >> That's right. I don't actually think >> That's right. I don't actually think that that is a serious question, even that that is a serious question, even that that is a serious question, even though most people would say that that though most people would say that that though most people would say that that is a serious question. Yeah, I I think is a serious question. Yeah, I I think is a serious question. Yeah, I I think in the in the church, I don't think that in the in the church, I don't think that in the in the church, I don't think that that's necessarily a super controversial that's necessarily a super controversial that's necessarily a super controversial thing to say, "Hey, maybe we should read thing to say, "Hey, maybe we should read thing to say, "Hey, maybe we should read the Bible the way Jesus the Bible the way Jesus the Bible the way Jesus >> don't even think, and I I was >> don't even think, and I I was >> don't even think, and I I was considering this just the other day, my considering this just the other day, my considering this just the other day, my sense is that people don't even ask the sense is that people don't even ask the sense is that people don't even ask the question, "Should I read like Jesus?" Or question, "Should I read like Jesus?" Or question, "Should I read like Jesus?" Or how does Jesus even read the Old how does Jesus even read the Old how does Jesus even read the Old Testament? I don't think most people Testament? I don't think most people Testament? I don't think most people even even even consider that line of thought. Yeah. consider that line of thought. Yeah. consider that line of thought. Yeah. Wait a minute. Jesus read the Old Wait a minute. Jesus read the Old Wait a minute. Jesus read the Old Testament or at least, you know, Testament or at least, you know, Testament or at least, you know, something along those lines is I think a something along those lines is I think a something along those lines is I think a radical idea for most believers. I don't radical idea for most believers. I don't radical idea for most believers. I don't think this is just a scholarly thing.

  3. think this is just a scholarly thing. think this is just a scholarly thing. Yeah, I think that's fair. I think Yeah, I think that's fair. I think Yeah, I think that's fair. I think that's fair. I think that um that's fair. I think that um that's fair. I think that um framing the question that pointedly and framing the question that pointedly and framing the question that pointedly and that specifically that specifically that specifically is something that yeah, I don't think a is something that yeah, I don't think a is something that yeah, I don't think a lot of believers have necessarily spent lot of believers have necessarily spent lot of believers have necessarily spent a ton of time thinking about. Maybe they a ton of time thinking about. Maybe they a ton of time thinking about. Maybe they notice as they're reading through the notice as they're reading through the notice as they're reading through the Gospels as Jesus is quoting scripture, Gospels as Jesus is quoting scripture, Gospels as Jesus is quoting scripture, he's quoting the Old Testament that they he's quoting the Old Testament that they he's quoting the Old Testament that they might think, "Oh, well, that's might think, "Oh, well, that's might think, "Oh, well, that's interesting that Jesus chooses that text interesting that Jesus chooses that text interesting that Jesus chooses that text or I wonder why he chose this text or, or I wonder why he chose this text or, or I wonder why he chose this text or, you know, sometimes you know, sometimes you know, sometimes the way that Jesus uses scripture, it the way that Jesus uses scripture, it the way that Jesus uses scripture, it seems pretty straightforward. And other seems pretty straightforward. And other seems pretty straightforward. And other times you look at it and go, "Huh, times you look at it and go, "Huh, times you look at it and go, "Huh, that's interesting. I don't know that I that's interesting. I don't know that I that's interesting. I don't know that I would have made that connection." Yeah, would have made that connection." Yeah, would have made that connection." Yeah, it it it I think your average Christian it it it I think your average Christian it it it I think your average Christian would say, would say, would say, "Yeah, sure, Jesus liked the Old "Yeah, sure, Jesus liked the Old "Yeah, sure, Jesus liked the Old Testament." Testament." Testament." >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> [laughter] >> I hope so. >> I hope so. >> I hope so. >> Or, you know, or had some sense of it. >> Or, you know, or had some sense of it. >> Or, you know, or had some sense of it. Uh but how did he read it? Sh- Can I Uh but how did he read it? Sh- Can I Uh but how did he read it? Sh- Can I imitate that? Can I do Those are Those imitate that? Can I do Those are Those imitate that? Can I do Those are Those are questions that are that are not are questions that are that are not are questions that are that are not often asked. And that's a question that often asked. And that's a question that often asked. And that's a question that we want to talk about today.

  4. we want to talk about today. we want to talk about today. Yeah, and it seems like such a simple Yeah, and it seems like such a simple Yeah, and it seems like such a simple starting point, right? I mean, you think starting point, right? I mean, you think starting point, right? I mean, you think about out of all the myriad of ways, about out of all the myriad of ways, about out of all the myriad of ways, the different reading strategies as you the different reading strategies as you the different reading strategies as you called them earlier, of how you can read called them earlier, of how you can read called them earlier, of how you can read the Bible, it seems like when you stop the Bible, it seems like when you stop the Bible, it seems like when you stop to ask, "Well, maybe we should read it to ask, "Well, maybe we should read it to ask, "Well, maybe we should read it like Jesus did." It almost seems like, like Jesus did." It almost seems like, like Jesus did." It almost seems like, "Well, duh." Like, well, obviously we "Well, duh." Like, well, obviously we "Well, duh." Like, well, obviously we would we should probably I mean, if he's would we should probably I mean, if he's would we should probably I mean, if he's if he's the son of God and the only, you if he's the son of God and the only, you if he's the son of God and the only, you know, he's he he's the one who inspired know, he's he he's the one who inspired know, he's he he's the one who inspired the text to begin with, if you believe the text to begin with, if you believe the text to begin with, if you believe in what scripture says, then maybe we in what scripture says, then maybe we in what scripture says, then maybe we should start with, I don't know, how he should start with, I don't know, how he should start with, I don't know, how he read it and interpreted it as a good read it and interpreted it as a good read it and interpreted it as a good >> Right. Starting point. Not not not just >> Right. Starting point. Not not not just >> Right. Starting point. Not not not just indicator, but starting point in the indicator, but starting point in the indicator, but starting point in the process. Like it's almost we should process. Like it's almost we should process. Like it's almost we should So few start with Jesus use of the Old So few start with Jesus use of the Old So few start with Jesus use of the Old Testament and work backwards. What Testament and work backwards. What Testament and work backwards. What typically happens typically happens typically happens is that we come up with our own way of is that we come up with our own way of is that we come up with our own way of reading the Old Testament and then reading the Old Testament and then reading the Old Testament and then somewhere along the line we think about somewhere along the line we think about somewhere along the line we think about how Jesus used it. You see it kind of how Jesus used it. You see it kind of how Jesus used it. You see it kind of farther down farther down farther down in the process. Instead, the question is in the process. Instead, the question is in the process. Instead, the question is well, maybe we should begin with this well, maybe we should begin with this well, maybe we should begin with this very simple question.

  5. very simple question. very simple question. Did Jesus read the Old Testament well? Did Jesus read the Old Testament well? Did Jesus read the Old Testament well? The follow-up question is, well, then The follow-up question is, well, then The follow-up question is, well, then should I do what he did? Right. And I I should I do what he did? Right. And I I should I do what he did? Right. And I I would add here that would add here that would add here that Jesus is not Jesus is not Jesus is not um um um He's This is going to sound crazy. He's He's This is going to sound crazy. He's He's This is going to sound crazy. He's not unique in the sense that it's not not unique in the sense that it's not not unique in the sense that it's not like he's making this radical departure like he's making this radical departure like he's making this radical departure from how the Old Testament writers read from how the Old Testament writers read from how the Old Testament writers read and interpreted earlier Old Testament and interpreted earlier Old Testament and interpreted earlier Old Testament texts. Like when you look at how the texts. Like when you look at how the texts. Like when you look at how the prophets interpret the first five books, prophets interpret the first five books, prophets interpret the first five books, the Torah, the Torah, the Torah, how how they are interpreting the Bible, how how they are interpreting the Bible, how how they are interpreting the Bible, Jesus uses many, if not all, of the same Jesus uses many, if not all, of the same Jesus uses many, if not all, of the same sorts of approaches in how he's reading sorts of approaches in how he's reading sorts of approaches in how he's reading the Old Testament itself. And then the Old Testament itself. And then the Old Testament itself. And then scripture is clear. He taught his scripture is clear. He taught his scripture is clear. He taught his disciples to read scripture the same disciples to read scripture the same disciples to read scripture the same way. way. way. And we'll we'll get to some of those And we'll we'll get to some of those And we'll we'll get to some of those texts in a little bit. texts in a little bit. texts in a little bit. >> But we should start with >> But we should start with >> But we should start with uh one passage that is is just uh one passage that is is just uh one passage that is is just foundational to Luke's gospel. And one foundational to Luke's gospel. And one foundational to Luke's gospel. And one of the reasons that we're going to work of the reasons that we're going to work of the reasons that we're going to work in Luke's gospel today is you you have in Luke's gospel today is you you have in Luke's gospel today is you you have to narrow the field somewhere. There's to narrow the field somewhere. There's to narrow the field somewhere. There's so many texts that you could potentially so many texts that you could potentially so many texts that you could potentially talk about. And both of us have done talk about. And both of us have done talk about. And both of us have done some work in Luke. And Luke, I would some work in Luke. And Luke, I would some work in Luke. And Luke, I would say, and I know you would agree with say, and I know you would agree with say, and I know you would agree with this, this is one of his major emphases.

  6. this, this is one of his major emphases. this, this is one of his major emphases. This is one of his key uh This is one of his key uh This is one of his key uh highlights when you compare his Gospel highlights when you compare his Gospel highlights when you compare his Gospel account to Matthew and to Mark and to account to Matthew and to Mark and to account to Matthew and to Mark and to John. John. John. Luke is even more explicit about this Luke is even more explicit about this Luke is even more explicit about this issue of how did Jesus read the Bible issue of how did Jesus read the Bible issue of how did Jesus read the Bible and teach his disciples to read the and teach his disciples to read the and teach his disciples to read the Bible. It's not that it's not present in Bible. It's not that it's not present in Bible. It's not that it's not present in the other Gospels, but it's like Luke is the other Gospels, but it's like Luke is the other Gospels, but it's like Luke is saying, "I want to make sure that you saying, "I want to make sure that you saying, "I want to make sure that you don't miss this." And so he goes out of don't miss this." And so he goes out of don't miss this." And so he goes out of his way to highlight this. And we're his way to highlight this. And we're his way to highlight this. And we're going to look at a couple of key texts going to look at a couple of key texts going to look at a couple of key texts where this comes out. Uh Ben, let's go where this comes out. Uh Ben, let's go where this comes out. Uh Ben, let's go ahead and start in Luke 4. ahead and start in Luke 4. ahead and start in Luke 4. Can't you give us a little bit of Can't you give us a little bit of Can't you give us a little bit of context here of what we're going to see context here of what we're going to see context here of what we're going to see before we dive in or maybe read just a before we dive in or maybe read just a before we dive in or maybe read just a couple of verses out of this? couple of verses out of this? couple of verses out of this? >> Yeah, so Luke is going to set up um >> Yeah, so Luke is going to set up um >> Yeah, so Luke is going to set up um we're going to focus on Jesus' rejection we're going to focus on Jesus' rejection we're going to focus on Jesus' rejection at Nazareth, but before we get there, we at Nazareth, but before we get there, we at Nazareth, but before we get there, we need to take inventory. We get the need to take inventory. We get the need to take inventory. We get the um his baptism in the Jordan and then we um his baptism in the Jordan and then we um his baptism in the Jordan and then we immediately get this genealogy, which is immediately get this genealogy, which is immediately get this genealogy, which is very interesting that it's that it's put very interesting that it's that it's put very interesting that it's that it's put here. Matthew opens with a genealogy.

  7. here. Matthew opens with a genealogy. here. Matthew opens with a genealogy. Luke is going to Luke is going to Luke is going to put it in between the put it in between the put it in between the uh baptism and the temptation. So he uh baptism and the temptation. So he uh baptism and the temptation. So he squeezes it in between those two events squeezes it in between those two events squeezes it in between those two events events. Jesus is tempted. events. Jesus is tempted. events. Jesus is tempted. And then right after the temptation, we And then right after the temptation, we And then right after the temptation, we get just two little verses that set up get just two little verses that set up get just two little verses that set up his rejection at Nazareth, and that is his rejection at Nazareth, and that is his rejection at Nazareth, and that is verse 14 when Jesus goes into Galilee in verse 14 when Jesus goes into Galilee in verse 14 when Jesus goes into Galilee in the power of the spirit. News about him the power of the spirit. News about him the power of the spirit. News about him spread throughout the entire vicinity. spread throughout the entire vicinity. spread throughout the entire vicinity. He was teaching in their synagogues He was teaching in their synagogues He was teaching in their synagogues being praised by everyone. So so far, being praised by everyone. So so far, being praised by everyone. So so far, you read these two verses, you're like, you read these two verses, you're like, you read these two verses, you're like, "This is terrific." "This is terrific." "This is terrific." Uh Jesus is preaching about the kingdom Uh Jesus is preaching about the kingdom Uh Jesus is preaching about the kingdom about uh the nature of his ministry to about uh the nature of his ministry to about uh the nature of his ministry to some extent, and it's going pretty well. some extent, and it's going pretty well. some extent, and it's going pretty well. There's a lot of good reception. And There's a lot of good reception. And There's a lot of good reception. And then he goes to Nazareth. Now, Luke is the only author to front-load Luke is the only author to front-load this rejection here. So, in Matthew and this rejection here. So, in Matthew and this rejection here. So, in Matthew and in Mark, the rejection is later in the in Mark, the rejection is later in the in Mark, the rejection is later in the narrative. Luke is going to front-load narrative. Luke is going to front-load narrative. Luke is going to front-load it. Now, this is probably because of it. Now, this is probably because of it. Now, this is probably because of what Luke is about and especially what what Luke is about and especially what what Luke is about and especially what Acts is about.

  8. Acts is about. Acts is about. About the gospel going About the gospel going About the gospel going to God's very own people and yet there's to God's very own people and yet there's to God's very own people and yet there's a lot of rejection to it. a lot of rejection to it. a lot of rejection to it. So, we get this rejection in Nazareth, So, we get this rejection in Nazareth, So, we get this rejection in Nazareth, but what is also unique to Luke is the but what is also unique to Luke is the but what is also unique to Luke is the inclusion of the Isaiah 61 quotation. inclusion of the Isaiah 61 quotation. inclusion of the Isaiah 61 quotation. So, Matt, why don't you go ahead and So, Matt, why don't you go ahead and So, Matt, why don't you go ahead and read read read Where did you want to pick this up? Where did you want to pick this up? Where did you want to pick this up? Yeah, we can just pick it up in Yeah, we can just pick it up in Yeah, we can just pick it up in Let's see. Let's go to Let's see. Let's go to Let's see. Let's go to >> you 16? What do you 16 16 to 19? Yeah, >> you 16? What do you 16 16 to 19? Yeah, >> you 16? What do you 16 16 to 19? Yeah, let's do that. This is Luke 4 starting let's do that. And he, that is Jesus, came to Nazareth And he, that is Jesus, came to Nazareth And he, that is Jesus, came to Nazareth where he had been brought up. where he had been brought up. where he had been brought up. And he would and as was his custom, he And he would and as was his custom, he And he would and as was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath went into the synagogue on the Sabbath went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. day. day. And he stood up to read. And he stood up to read. And he stood up to read. >> Now, hold up. >> Now, hold up. >> Now, hold up. It says where he had been brought up. It says where he had been brought up. It says where he had been brought up. Now, we learned in 3:23 that Jesus is Now, we learned in 3:23 that Jesus is Now, we learned in 3:23 that Jesus is about 30 years old. So, it's a long time about 30 years old. So, it's a long time about 30 years old. So, it's a long time in Nazareth. Yeah. in Nazareth. Yeah. in Nazareth. Yeah. Does he know these people in Nazareth?

  9. Does he know these people in Nazareth? Does he know these people in Nazareth? Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely. >> know him? Absolutely. >> know him? Absolutely. >> know him? Absolutely. >> Absolutely. Now, now Nazareth, a lot of >> Absolutely. Now, now Nazareth, a lot of >> Absolutely. Now, now Nazareth, a lot of scholars say in Nazareth is only scholars say in Nazareth is only scholars say in Nazareth is only about a population of about 500 people. about a population of about 500 people. about a population of about 500 people. So, small town. He's been there his So, small town. He's been there his So, small town. He's been there his whole life. whole life. whole life. They all know each other. So, Luke wants They all know each other. So, Luke wants They all know each other. So, Luke wants you to go into this event thinking, you to go into this event thinking, you to go into this event thinking, these people know him and his family these people know him and his family these people know him and his family intimately. They played together. They intimately. They played together. They intimately. They played together. This is his community, which makes it just raises the whole stakes. makes it just raises the whole stakes. makes it just raises the whole stakes. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Okay, so Okay, so Okay, so >> Sorry you're good. You're good. Verse uh >> Sorry you're good. You're good. Verse uh >> Sorry you're good. You're good. Verse uh verse 17. verse 17. verse 17. >> And he's >> And he's >> And he's and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. given to him. given to him. He unrolled He unrolled He unrolled the scroll the scroll the scroll and found the place where it is written. and found the place where it is written. and found the place where it is written. The spirit of the Lord is upon me The spirit of the Lord is upon me The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me because he has anointed me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  10. to proclaim good news to the poor. to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim rel- He has sent me to proclaim rel- He has sent me to proclaim rel- sorry, liberty to the captives sorry, liberty to the captives sorry, liberty to the captives and remove and remove and remove recovering of sight to the blind recovering of sight to the blind recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are to set at liberty those who are to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the year of the oppressed to proclaim the year of the oppressed to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Lord's favor. Lord's favor. And he rolled up the scroll and gave it And he rolled up the scroll and gave it And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant back to the attendant back to the attendant and sat down. and sat down. and sat down. And the eyes of all And the eyes of all And the eyes of all the congreg- sorry, the congreg- sorry, the congreg- sorry, all the congregants congregation all the congregants congregation all the congregants congregation were were were upon him. upon him. upon him. And he began to say to them, "Today, And he began to say to them, "Today, And he began to say to them, "Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in this scripture has been fulfilled in this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." your hearing." your hearing." Yeah, that's pretty amazing. Yeah, that's pretty amazing. Yeah, that's pretty amazing. It's [laughter] back to verse 22. They It's [laughter] back to verse 22. They It's [laughter] back to verse 22. They were all speaking well of him and were were all speaking well of him and were were all speaking well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that came amazed by the gracious words that came amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth. from his mouth. from his mouth. Yeah, so it's talk about a mic drop Yeah, so it's talk about a mic drop Yeah, so it's talk about a mic drop moment. I mean moment. I mean moment. I mean you you thinking you're sitting in the you you thinking you're sitting in the you you thinking you're sitting in the synagogue and here's here's synagogue and here's here's synagogue and here's here's Jesus. Now a grown man. He's he's you Jesus. Now a grown man. He's he's you Jesus. Now a grown man. He's he's you know, around 30-ish, right? And like you know, around 30-ish, right? And like you know, around 30-ish, right? And like you said, they've known this kid since he said, they've known this kid since he said, they've known this kid since he was a little toddler.

  11. was a little toddler. was a little toddler. And now you have him all great. He's And now you have him all great. He's And now you have him all great. He's reading scriptures beautiful and he reading scriptures beautiful and he reading scriptures beautiful and he says, "No, no, no. says, "No, no, no. says, "No, no, no. What we just read from Isaiah What we just read from Isaiah What we just read from Isaiah today, it's fulfilled in me. today, it's fulfilled in me. today, it's fulfilled in me. Like the fulfillment is here. All of Like the fulfillment is here. All of Like the fulfillment is here. All of this long expected promise, this long expected promise, this long expected promise, the fulfillment is here. the fulfillment is here. the fulfillment is here. Now, this is interesting because it Now, this is interesting because it Now, this is interesting because it tells us that tells us that tells us that Jesus wasn't doing this growing up. Jesus wasn't doing this growing up. Jesus wasn't doing this growing up. Yeah. The fact that in fact they would Yeah. The fact that in fact they would Yeah. The fact that in fact they would they didn't read this at the end of 22, they didn't read this at the end of 22, they didn't read this at the end of 22, yet they said, "Isn't this Joseph's yet they said, "Isn't this Joseph's yet they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" son?" son?" Which means we know him. Yeah. Which means we know him. Yeah. Which means we know him. Yeah. He's doing so This is unusual. He He's doing so This is unusual. He He's doing so This is unusual. He doesn't typically read scripture and doesn't typically read scripture and doesn't typically read scripture and say, "It's me. It spoke [laughter] of say, "It's me. It spoke [laughter] of say, "It's me. It spoke [laughter] of me." That's right. This was a change in me." That's right. This was a change in me." That's right. This was a change in Jesus' ministry. So really, I mean, Jesus' ministry. So really, I mean, Jesus' ministry. So really, I mean, again, we're now post-baptism. That's again, we're now post-baptism. That's again, we're now post-baptism. That's when his when his when his God commissioned him to be God commissioned him to be God commissioned him to be uh the greater Adam, the greater David, uh the greater Adam, the greater David, uh the greater Adam, the greater David, and the son of God. There's a and the son of God. There's a and the son of God. There's a commissioning there, and at that moment commissioning there, and at that moment commissioning there, and at that moment things changed Yeah. in his life. Now things changed Yeah. in his life. Now things changed Yeah. in his life. Now it's time. Now the time of of it's time. Now the time of of it's time. Now the time of of fulfillment has arrived, and now here he fulfillment has arrived, and now here he fulfillment has arrived, and now here he is is is explicitly identifying himself explicitly identifying himself explicitly identifying himself as this servant. Now, let me ask you as this servant. Now, let me ask you as this servant. Now, let me ask you this, Matt. So, this, Matt. So, this, Matt. So, we've It's a pretty good quotation. So, we've It's a pretty good quotation. So, we've It's a pretty good quotation. So, in in the English translations, verses in in the English translations, verses in in the English translations, verses 18 through 19 in my translation, I'm 18 through 19 in my translation, I'm 18 through 19 in my translation, I'm reading from the CSB, it's in bold font,

  12. reading from the CSB, it's in bold font, reading from the CSB, it's in bold font, which is how they mark quotations. Yeah. which is how they mark quotations. Yeah. which is how they mark quotations. Yeah. In the ESV, is it just quotation marks? In the ESV, is it just quotation marks? In the ESV, is it just quotation marks? Is that how that works? Is that how that works? Is that how that works? >> Uh yeah, it's just set apart in poetic >> Uh yeah, it's just set apart in poetic >> Uh yeah, it's just set apart in poetic lines, but yes, it's it's set apart in lines, but yes, it's it's set apart in lines, but yes, it's it's set apart in quotation marks, yeah. Do you think quotation marks, yeah. Do you think quotation marks, yeah. Do you think Jesus read more than this text? Jesus read more than this text? Jesus read more than this text? Well, we don't know. Does this Let's Well, we don't know. Does this Let's Well, we don't know. Does this Let's start with that. But, um it it seems start with that. But, um it it seems start with that. But, um it it seems likely to me that likely to me that likely to me that he doesn't He's not just cherry-picking he doesn't He's not just cherry-picking he doesn't He's not just cherry-picking two verses out of Isaiah 61 and saying, two verses out of Isaiah 61 and saying, two verses out of Isaiah 61 and saying, "Okay, here's a great proof text," and "Okay, here's a great proof text," and "Okay, here's a great proof text," and then just ignoring the surrounding then just ignoring the surrounding then just ignoring the surrounding context. I think he's very intentionally context. I think he's very intentionally context. I think he's very intentionally uh drawing upon the larger themes and of uh drawing upon the larger themes and of uh drawing upon the larger themes and of the paragraphs and the really the larger the paragraphs and the really the larger the paragraphs and the really the larger book of Isaiah, that larger section as book of Isaiah, that larger section as book of Isaiah, that larger section as well. So, yeah, absolutely. That's well. So, yeah, absolutely. That's well. So, yeah, absolutely. That's right. I right. I right. I Perhaps he only read this. I I suspect Perhaps he only read this. I I suspect Perhaps he only read this. I I suspect he didn't, but perhaps he only read he didn't, but perhaps he only read he didn't, but perhaps he only read these few lines from Isaiah 61. At least these few lines from Isaiah 61. At least these few lines from Isaiah 61. At least he still has much of Isaiah in mind. And he still has much of Isaiah in mind. And he still has much of Isaiah in mind. And we know we can actually tell that Yeah, we know we can actually tell that Yeah, we know we can actually tell that Yeah, it's difficult here, Matt, because it's difficult here, Matt, because it's difficult here, Matt, because our cross-references aren't quite the our cross-references aren't quite the our cross-references aren't quite the best. They're not quite what they should best. They're not quite what they should best. They're not quite what they should be. If you were to track all of the be. If you were to track all of the be. If you were to track all of the quotations and allusions up to this quotations and allusions up to this quotations and allusions up to this point in Luke's narrative, there are a point in Luke's narrative, there are a point in Luke's narrative, there are a ton from Isaiah.

  13. ton from Isaiah. ton from Isaiah. >> Absolutely. >> Absolutely. >> Absolutely. >> Starting in chapter 1 all the way up. >> Starting in chapter 1 all the way up. >> Starting in chapter 1 all the way up. We're now I haven't counted them. I We're now I haven't counted them. I We're now I haven't counted them. I should count them. should count them. should count them. But there are a lot up to this. So, by But there are a lot up to this. So, by But there are a lot up to this. So, by the time Jesus reads Isaiah 61, the the time Jesus reads Isaiah 61, the the time Jesus reads Isaiah 61, the reader of Luke, the attuned reader, reader of Luke, the attuned reader, reader of Luke, the attuned reader, would realize, oh, we've been getting would realize, oh, we've been getting would realize, oh, we've been getting fine like we're finally moving to this fine like we're finally moving to this fine like we're finally moving to this point. Really would have been nice kind point. Really would have been nice kind point. Really would have been nice kind of capstone to what Luke is already of capstone to what Luke is already of capstone to what Luke is already doing. Yes. doing. Yes. doing. Yes. In other words, in other words, he's In other words, in other words, he's In other words, in other words, he's pulling a great deal of weight from pulling a great deal of weight from pulling a great deal of weight from Isaiah. Not just this little section. Isaiah. Not just this little section. Isaiah. Not just this little section. So, the word here uh this is a text. You So, the word here uh this is a text. You So, the word here uh this is a text. You know this quite well. I mean, you just know this quite well. I mean, you just know this quite well. I mean, you just you have you have a book on it, but this you have you have a book on it, but this you have you have a book on it, but this is a servant text is a servant text is a servant text >> Mhm. from Isaiah. And those servant >> Mhm. from Isaiah. And those servant >> Mhm. from Isaiah. And those servant passages, there are clusters of them. passages, there are clusters of them. passages, there are clusters of them. Five There's debate, four or five. Five There's debate, four or five. Five There's debate, four or five. But they're all tied together and this But they're all tied together and this But they're all tied together and this is This is one of the most explicit is This is one of the most explicit is This is one of the most explicit servant text. It's one of the most servant text. It's one of the most servant text. It's one of the most positive text. Like there's You don't positive text. Like there's You don't positive text. Like there's You don't have There's no mention here of him have There's no mention here of him have There's no mention here of him suffering.

  14. suffering. suffering. It's a text where It's a text where It's a text where he's he's now occupying a his prophetic he's he's now occupying a his prophetic he's he's now occupying a his prophetic voice of announcing that the new age has voice of announcing that the new age has voice of announcing that the new age has come, the age of restoration, that this come, the age of restoration, that this come, the age of restoration, that this Jubilee, this eschatological time period Jubilee, this eschatological time period Jubilee, this eschatological time period ends at the very end of history when God ends at the very end of history when God ends at the very end of history when God would restore his people. would restore his people. would restore his people. This liberation, I mean, this is a text This liberation, I mean, this is a text This liberation, I mean, this is a text where where where everybody was excited about. Yes. everybody was excited about. Yes. everybody was excited about. Yes. And it's striking that at the end of And it's striking that at the end of And it's striking that at the end of that quotation that quotation that quotation he says to proclaim he says to proclaim he says to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. And he and the year of the Lord's favor. And he and the year of the Lord's favor. And he and stops there. Because the next line in stops there. Because the next line in stops there. Because the next line in Isaiah 61 Isaiah 61 Isaiah 61 >> It's got some punch. >> It's got some punch. >> It's got some punch. >> Yeah, it's about about vengeance. >> Yeah, it's about about vengeance. >> Yeah, it's about about vengeance. >> Yeah. And so, uh I think there's an >> Yeah. And so, uh I think there's an >> Yeah. And so, uh I think there's an intentional stop there because what intentional stop there because what intentional stop there because what Jesus is signaling is Jesus is signaling is Jesus is signaling is his arrival signals restoration. And not his arrival signals restoration. And not his arrival signals restoration. And not just And this is where I think just And this is where I think just And this is where I think he's Jesus had to be careful because um he's Jesus had to be careful because um he's Jesus had to be careful because um people easily misunderstood what he people easily misunderstood what he people easily misunderstood what he meant when he would use terms like meant when he would use terms like meant when he would use terms like restoration or even the kingdom. Or even restoration or even the kingdom. Or even restoration or even the kingdom. Or even the word here, let me look at this.

  15. the word here, let me look at this. the word here, let me look at this. To set free the oppressed. Yeah. So, To set free the oppressed. Yeah. So, To set free the oppressed. Yeah. So, there, you know, Israel in the first there, you know, Israel in the first there, you know, Israel in the first century they would see themselves as century they would see themselves as century they would see themselves as being political They were politically being political They were politically being political They were politically oppressed. oppressed. oppressed. >> That's right. They were under Roman >> That's right. They were under Roman >> That's right. They were under Roman occupation. occupation. occupation. >> Yes. So, the Nazarenes, they're going to >> Yes. So, the Nazarenes, they're going to >> Yes. So, the Nazarenes, they're going to say, "Yes, now is the time." He reads say, "Yes, now is the time." He reads say, "Yes, now is the time." He reads Isaiah 61 and now the Nazarenes are Isaiah 61 and now the Nazarenes are Isaiah 61 and now the Nazarenes are saying, saying, saying, "It's Let's go. Let's do this thing." "It's Let's go. Let's do this thing." "It's Let's go. Let's do this thing." Yeah, that's right. Here here what at Yeah, that's right. Here here what at Yeah, that's right. Here here what at last the Romans are going to be last the Romans are going to be last the Romans are going to be overthrown and Israel is going to be overthrown and Israel is going to be overthrown and Israel is going to be reestablished as a political kingdom and reestablished as a political kingdom and reestablished as a political kingdom and this is the start of something, you this is the start of something, you this is the start of something, you know, the sort of this renewed Davidic know, the sort of this renewed Davidic know, the sort of this renewed Davidic kingdom. And yet it's it's almost as if kingdom. And yet it's it's almost as if kingdom. And yet it's it's almost as if what the Gospels are saying is what the Gospels are saying is what the Gospels are saying is actually not quite. Because yes, there actually not quite. Because yes, there actually not quite. Because yes, there is restoration, but what Jesus is is restoration, but what Jesus is is restoration, but what Jesus is signaling is I'm here for an even signaling is I'm here for an even signaling is I'm here for an even greater kind of restoration, not just greater kind of restoration, not just greater kind of restoration, not just some sort of like, let's make Israel some sort of like, let's make Israel some sort of like, let's make Israel great again, but let's free people from great again, but let's free people from great again, but let's free people from their greatest enemies of sin, death, their greatest enemies of sin, death, their greatest enemies of sin, death, and the devil. And that's the kind of and the devil. And that's the kind of and the devil. And that's the kind of restoration. They read that word or they restoration. They read that word or they restoration. They read that word or they they hear that word oppressed, they're they hear that word oppressed, they're they hear that word oppressed, they're thinking mostly political. When Jesus thinking mostly political. When Jesus thinking mostly political. When Jesus uses that word oppressed, he's thinking uses that word oppressed, he's thinking uses that word oppressed, he's thinking spiritual oppression spiritual oppression spiritual oppression from the devil, from their own sin, from the devil, from their own sin, from the devil, from their own sin, their own wickedness.

  16. their own wickedness. their own wickedness. He's using a different category here. He's using a different category here. He's using a different category here. They're they're thinking in terms of They're they're thinking in terms of They're they're thinking in terms of political political political nuances, but he's he's speaking here in nuances, but he's he's speaking here in nuances, but he's he's speaking here in primarily spiritual terms.

Summary

The discussion explores the emergence of diverse Bible reading strategies in biblical studies, beginning in the 1980s and gaining prominence in the 1990s with the rise of hermeneutics, the study of interpretation. A key takeaway is the rhetorical question of whether Christians should read the Old Testament like Jesus, suggesting that many believers don't consider how Jesus himself engaged with scripture. The practical conclusion implies a need to re-examine our interpretive approaches by looking to Jesus' example.
